I’m personally glad I bought the perm harvesting tools because I usually run with my main level 80 with the orichalcum tools. I would NOT harvest low level mats with that because it seemed like a waste. Now I harvest everything, and because of that, I’m considering finally doing some crafting.
I bought gems with real cash for the tools because… well, this game is all I do (like, for entertainment… I have a job and stuff), so it is well worth it to me.
Oh. My. God. This is a FEATURE put in by th designers??? I hate this so much it makes me want to stop playing sometimes!!!! I have started to dread selling stuff on thexTP. Seriously. Evil.
Im still at a loss as to how people are farming large amounts of money from these events.
I dont think champs drop particularly fantastic loot…karma, 5-10 silver, maybe an ori ore. Loot bags, but still. I just dont see how people are farming 10 gold per hour. Even the pavilion farming. I dont see it. I brought my MF toon, with close to 300% MF with buffs. I didnt see nearly the income as some people are boasting. Even if I sold everything I earned.
Maybe Im doing something wrong?
For the invasion it all depends on how many champs spawn which depends on group size as i understand it. I did one invasion last night. I used a MF booster only but hit probably 8 champs plus scarlett. With salvaging the rares and using TP for most other items (i dont craft), i came away with about 6 gold.
Since the start of the invasions i have increased my bank by over 50 gold. I dont even want anything that i could buy but i want the LS achievements.
Well speaking as someone who’s only gaming experience before GW2 was the Sims, I can say that it is very complex. I had no idea what the TP was or how to use it. If it wasn’t for my kids’ help I would have probably run around for an hour and deleted the game. Now that I’ve done a TON of reading and playing, I actually show my kids a lot of tricks and tips.
Okay, thank you for providing an example of what was confusing to you personally. Just some questions for clarification. I can understand the tp being a bit confusing at first. But when you say you needed your kids help, do you mean for the tp specifically or for the game as a whole. And how much did the in game hints help you. The list of in game hints seems to cover most of the basics of playing, but I’ve been a gamer my entire life, so to me they seem to be enough. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hints
I think it’s really rude and mean to suggest that someone new to the game isn’t intelligent or needs “hand holding”. In game, there is NO useful help or guide. The wiki is somewhat helpful but it is also quite complicated sometimes, if you’ve never played this type of game before. All you people who make fun of new players should be ashamed of yourselves. I’m sure everyone would love to walk into this knowing everything, just like you know it all now.
Well, for starters, I don’t think I made fun of any players (other than strongly disagreeing with most of what the OP said), but if I did, I didn’t mean to, so sorry. I just said that most of the OP’s suggestions seemed like hand holding to me. As for help, did the Hints menu help at all, or any of the on screen prompts? If I recall you start the game with just one weapon skill and your heal skill in the starter personal story zone. If you’ve only ever played the sims I can see managing movement/attacking/healing being a bit of a learning curve.
What would have made the game more accessible to you?
It was more than the TP. There were lots and lots of things that now seem obvious if I were to, say, start an alt toon – basically start from scratch again. I had no idea about WvW or what it meant or how to access it or participate until a guildmate helped me out. I remember going in there once, running around for 5 minutes not knowing ANYTHING about where to go or what to do, and getting my behind handed to me and WP back to beginning, saying “this is stupid and frustrating”. Don’t get me started on PvP. It would be good if there were maybe in-game mini tutorial videos. Walk me through it, because I have never played an MMO before and I’m not “gamer”. I love GW2 however, and I’m glad I stuck it out and found some helpful people along the way.
My point is, look at this game from the perspective of someone with NO gaming experience, and then cut those people some slack. I have learned not to look in-game for real help in GW2, but as a newbie I had no idea about the 3rd party websites, as I’m sure most newbies don’t.

B… I realized early on that it takes money to make the world go ‘round. I have no patience for crafting and I find it confusing and boring. So that means that if I want to outfit any of my chars in exotics, I’m buying them off the TP. Add the cost of food for those long battles and WP costs and so on and so on. Oh and the achievement points for having coins in your bank, though I will stop at 100 gold on that one.
Personally i find it all boring and frustrating and disorganized. Any commander isn’t actually commanding. Rather, they run around all willy nilly like the res of us. The fights are completely mindless and the whole event is not fun. I think another forum poster said it best…anet thinks because we do it we like it. But no…i am doing it only to get achievements. I dont care about farming the gold. The boring nature of it is not worth it.
Personally, I really enjoy trying new things with guildmates. I played this game solo until about 6 weeks ago, and I was honestly getting pretty bored. Ya, it’s pretty, but when you’ve been to the same area a hundred times… meh. Anyway, I had never done PvP or WvW or dungeons or world bosses or jumping puzzles, etc. A good guild happened upon me and I decided to join as they were super nice and helpful and lots of people always online. With their help I have tried everything, and it’s really added new dimensions to the game for me. I also like helping people. I help by rezing downed players a lot, and helping with personal stories and skill points. I also kind of “discovered” the achievement points system, and now upping my APs is kind of the goal I’m working toward. Anyway, I have many, many things still I want to do in GW2, and I am totally addicted and having a blast with it!
I know this is not my thread but thanks a bunch for the info!
Sorry for the maybe silly question but how do you get to the playhouse?
I have a question. If little event window says there’s an invasion in blazeridge steppes, how do i know which WP to go to? If i go to map view while i am still in DR will i see an orange circle in blazeridge where the actual event is occurring?
Especially medium armor. This game has no concept of fashionable-looking medium armor. You can have a trenchcoat or a trenchcoat. Lame.
^ Amen!
Amen × 2
I agree with better armor. The hevy stuff is good but medium and light is ridiculous. Some of the female armr especially. Do i even need to mention the underboob or tjr costumes that look like they spawned from alice in wonderland? It’s like silly kittenty light, trnchoat boring medium, and awesome spike filled kick luck in the face filled real heavy armor.
I’m on Isle of Janthir and I’ve noticed people becoming increasingly rude in chat. Used to be that people were helpful. Now, they just insult anyone who gets in their way. I have no issues with farming if that’s what you want to do. But no one has the right to insult people who just want to play.
I believe the best thing to do is ignore any bad comments in the chat, but report anyone who is harassing you or is using foul language. The more you try to respond, the worse it gets. These people are just immature. Best to leave them to their tantrum and go about your PLAY. And most of all, don’t take it personally. The problem is theirs, not yours.
That being said, Anet needs to fix broken systems on DEs.
Explore everywhere. Personally, I will do every race’s low level map before I move up. It will help you learn the game and I find you get great XP from exploring and getting all the WPs, POIs, vistas, hearts, and doing all the dynamic events along the way. You can craft for some levels, but personally, I feel that costs a lot of gold for not a big return. I also suggest that you can use XP boosters, if you don’t mind spending some gems on that. Once you get up to dungeon level, you can do those. Run a quick, easy dungeon (like CoF path 1) usually will get you one level, plus gold.
What happened? I have sprockets galore. Is that different from clockwatch box?
I feel your pain OP. I have never once gotten an exotic weapon drop. Only one time have I gotten a good rare drop – still not a precursor. The few other rares I ended up with were junk that weren’t worth anything. I give up on drops and BL chests. Period. Total garbage. I play only because I want to at this point. No legendaries for me… no insta-gold drops. Just fun. When I stop having fun, I’m outta here.
I would really appreciate ascended back pieces without fractals or farming. Karma or laurels would be great.
This happened to me twice today but never before that. I put in a LOT of damage each time but got nothing. Anet needs to fix this bug.
ETA this was in queensdale and i was not champion farming. Just happened across the champion fights while i was leveling up a character.

Favorite name i have seen is Barak Me Amadeus
Aug 20 is the date for the new living story stuff
2… Level 80 Necro human female, which was my first character. I don’t really play her a lot anymore, but I can’t bear to delete her because she was “my first”. Level 80 Warrior human female. LOVE to play this character.
I have made and deleted at least a dozen others of different races/classes, but I also find leveling up super boring. You have no health, nothing good to fight with, and have to do the same stuff over and over for little reward UNTIL you get to 80…. yawn. For now, I’m having fun with my warrior and I’m still learning ways to equip her and how to synergize everything for the best effects.
Ya, I love the permanent axe. I really want permanent harvesting equipment. It is really a pain to “run out” of charges in the middle of nowhere or have to use up inventory space to make sure you don’t run out.
Personally, anything cool would be good. I like some of the armor skins. I missed a lot of stuff because I didn’t play for a long time due to school commitments, so the chance to get some of that would be nice.
I’m not “impressed” by them but I can appreciate the time and effort (or ya, even cash, ‘cuz let’s face it, you have to work for that, too) some people put into making or obtaining them. Personally, I don’t like the look of most of the skins so it’s not something I would strive for, but if it makes YOU happy, then that’s all that matters. I have seen a few characters where the weapon really suited their entire look, and I like that.
As far as being “impressed”, maybe if you had to be PvP champion to get it, I would be. That takes real player skill, something that I really do admire.
Bought $100 in gems, converted it to gold and bought 50,000 influence with half of the gold I’d converted… For the wrong guild.
I laughed so hard but felt sorry for you at the same time!
I want to add that everyone here is entitled to have an opinion. However, I do not need to play like you, and you do not need to play like me. Deal with it.
I don’t like or dislike farming. However, if I want to buy some sweet and spicey butternut squash soup to help me in my play, well, I need a couple gold to buy 5. If I need a full set of exotics (that I LIKE) to run dungeons or FotM or be able to complete maps in Orr, well, there’s more gold. If I want ascended trinkets… more gold. Crafting? Honestly, that’s the biggest gold sink there is. How do you get all this gold? I am a GW2 addict, but am forced to play on my work and school schedule. I don’t want to have to go do hearts and DE for 3 years to play the stuff I want (dungeons, etc). So… guess what I do? I do the stuff I like that pays, like taking temples in Orr and running with the zerg in the pavilion, or doing the hot air balloon stuff, or meta world bosses. It … is… ALL … farming. Until everyone starts and stays exactly the same from day 1 to day 600, we are all farming something. Have you done a dungeon path more than once? Have you done everything in game ONE TIME only? If the answer is no, then you, my friend, are farming something.
Awesome! I’m glad I’m not the only one that has these moments!
First, I can’t say how many characters I’ve deleted without checking the inventory or stripping off and selling their armor! Like really, EVERY time. Why can’t I remember this??
Most idiot moment EVER… doing my first jumping puzzle (can’t remember which one it was), and read through the help guide somewhere, and it says “DO NOT FALL INTO THE HOLE JUST BEFORE THE CHEST”. It takes me about an hour to finally get up the chest… and I fall through the hole in front of it…. I cry a little every time I think about it.
I agree. I had been avoiding jumping puzzles because i get soooooo nervous and fall alot due to nerves, but i recently tried a few and they are really growiing on me. I just have to take a break once in a while to calm down! I love the feeling of accomplishment from these.
But even in the old OLD days when i came from you played for high score or what have you. You want to achieve something whether it’s gold or points or beating every build in PvP. That’s the competitive human nature!
Sorry, but regardless of whether you play mmorpg or any other video game, there is always a goal to reach … or there is no fun or sense of accomplishment. My hubby loves his xbox. He plays all the games he likes to unlock ACHIEVEMENTS. You might play a game for a few hours without some type of reward, but i dont’t think you would play for 500 hours. I love GW2, but part of what i like is having the chance for loot and achievements.
I feel your pain, OP. This is the very reason I did about 3 dungeons (using gw2lfg) and stopped. It was an excercise in frustration. I was new to dungeons, yet nobody tried to help me figure things out, they just ran on and left me EVERY TIME.
I finally found a great guild that actually helps new players and I have to say I’ve run many dungeons with them and have really learned a lot. I actually enjoy the experience rather than feel angry and sad about it.
People… this is a GAME. A little community spirit is appreciated. I ress everyone I possibly can, no matter what I’m doing. The sense of helping others is what originally drew me to this game, but that is being replaced by those who feel it’s ok to be rude or ignorant to people as long as there’s loot to get. I want to get in-game stuff too, but I won’t do it at the expense of others, and I will help anyone who needs it along the way.
Human females. Norn males. IMHO.
I love my warrior. I played for a long time with a necro but warrior gives me way more options and is simply a ton of fun no matter what situation i play in. I lve it so much that i have created and deleted about 8 alts because none are as good or fun as my warrior.
Ya i run dungeons with a warrior and do fine. I agree one ranged weapon with alt melee weapons. Personally i like to use axe/mace and rifle. I suggest you eat some helpful food also depending on the build you go with. What level is your character?
For karma, get your dailies every day but save them up for a week at a time and open them when you have a karma booster. At 80 you might want to star thinking about the better exotic gear for armor, weapons and trinkets. These can all be bought in various ways, so you don’t necessarily need tons of gold.
Don’t forget you can get exotic level armor from karma vendors in Orr. Personally i try to do champion and temple events and kill and harvest everything in Orr. Salvage rare weapons and armor with a black lion salvage kit. Salvage fine weapons and armor with a fine salvage kit. Sell everything on black lion trading post to get the most money, except masterwork weapons and armor. Sell those as is to regular merchants because the salvaged materials will be worth less than the original item.
Don’t forget to upgrade trinkets too or you will miss out on a lot of extra stats. Laurels are a great way to get those.
I used BL TP to buy most of my stuff. It was reasonably priced. Most pieces i bought were under 5g. If you want stats but don’t like the look just buy another piece you like and transmute it.
This is Candi, she’s a sweetheart with a hammer…
Hi, I really like your armor! Can you tell me what it all is?
It’s the “Barbaric” set. Just look in the trading post for “barbaric”. There are green (masterwork) items available with it, so if you just need to reskin stuff it shouldn’t cost too much.
Thanks! Never hurts to have an extra set of awesome armor
Anet REALLY needs to fix this. I refuse to do any more balloons until they fix it. I kill everything, do what I’m supposed to, but I get to the chest and it’s already open and I have no option to access it. This has happened EVERYWHERE and I’m completely sick of it.
I like that I can solo or be a part of a group. I like making a difference when I’m in a group. Love the scenery. I work a lot and I’m working on a degree in school and this is the only fun tiime I get – EVER! I enjoy every second of it, even when I’m frustrated at taking an hour to do a jumping puzzle… ‘cuz I’m not working or studying!!!!
This is Candi, she’s a sweetheart with a hammer…
Hi, I really like your armor! Can you tell me what it all is?
Thanks Wallace for the more thorough explanation.
WhiteandMilky I totally get what you’re saying. Have to use a weapon for its intended purpose. But ya, pug PvP is not a place to use this. I have never done sPvP, and don’t have a team. I’m still learning, so thanks for your input.
So my two cents…
I understand how frustrating it can be when everyone else seems to know what the heck is going on and you’re sitting there going “wait, why is everyone going over there?” or whatever. I played this game for a long time just doing like you. Wandered around, stayed at my level, did the hearts, etc. I even stopped playing for a while. When I came back, I decided to make a completely different character (started with a necro, now play a warrior). I also decided to start reading the forums and finding out what I can really do and and discovered that I wanted to make a goal (or goals) for myself. This might help you, too.
I joined a great guild that helps out people a lot. I have tried dungeons, which I was always scared to do, but now I’m really starting to like them a lot. I tried WvW, which again I was scared to try but now I love. I tried PvP, where I get my kitten kicked all over the place but learn a lot about my character and what she can and cannot do. My goal, now that I have my warrior at 80 and all decked out in the armor and weapons I wanted, with a build that a guild member helped me with, is to up my achievement points.
I say, ask yourself what your goals are? Do you want to craft (personally, that is the one part of the game I really dislike)? Do you want to work toward some exotic or legendary armor or weapons? Do you just want to amass huge amounts of gold? Map completion? PvP champion? Dungeon master? There are many, many ways you can go. Once you have that sorted out, read all the info you can on your chosen path so you can figure out what you need to do to get there. For instance, I wanted to learn the best build for my warrior for PvE. I read the forums here and elsewhere on different builds and so on. I continue to read about warrior weapons and such and how to use it all together. There’s a lot to learn but I’m having so much fun I’m literally addicted to this game now. My poor husband….
I really hope you enjoy this game as much as I do. Figure out what you want to do, but try everything!!
I have a crazy question. I compacted so I have everything all mashed together. How do I un-compact it? Compact is the only option I seem to have. Do I just click that again?
Ok thank you for the help.
Thanks, but you aren’t understanding my question. Can you level up your character by fighting in PvP or not? If I have a level 10 character and do an hour in PvP will I come out at level 11? I do get that IN pvp I am level 80.
Dungeons, explore everything, harvest everything, kill everything, do heart quests. You can level with crafting if you have tons of gold to spare.
I am new to pvp though not new to GW. If i wanted to make a thief or ele and jump rightinto pvp with it could i level up to 80 just doing that? If so would it be faster than leveling in pve? Like for one hour of each which would get me the farthest?
