New engineer looking for build.

I use the static discharge/lightning sigil build i found floating somewhere in forums a few months ago. Idk if it’s still viable now with all the changes and stuff, but it was quite fun when I played it. It’s a rifle/toolkit set-up with condi elixer and elixer tiny (i could never get the names straight). I forgot the build but it’s mainly quite glass and using the toolkit for the pull, aoe bleed and the 3sec blocks for defense.

Bomb kit speculations

in Engineer

Am I the only one who uses bomb kit almost exclusively in almost all instances (except fracs and pvp ofc)? :o I love it in pve mainly because unlike other classes where they have to face the mob to deal damage, we can deal the same amount of damage with our backs turned. In dungeons, I usually whip out my bomb kit, and run around willy-nilly dropping bombs left and right till the mobs are done. The only down side is, they’re mostly an aoe/group-centric weapon, and they don’t really shine as much vs single-targets (unlike nades which still do good damage vs single-target mobs).

I have to agree with the overnerf on stealth bomb. Before it used to be 5sec and 1pulse per sec providing 5 chances to miss. Now it’s 4sec and 2 sec/pulse so there’s only 2 chances. I think a good balance would be to increase its duration by 6 seconds, but retain the 2s/pulse thing. This way, it’ll fit better into the mob’s model of slow attacks but be more useful.

Im hoping a buff will happen to elixer-infused bombs to increase the healing ratio. Right now it’s a joke as a guard can heal so much more with just his passive F2 and regen =/ Make the healing attained a % of both healing and damage so we won’t gimp ourselves by choosing one over the other. Say… 60% healing 40% damage.

I haven’t been denied entry as an eng, but this one fotm group I joined, while a war and a necro was like “meh engineer”, at least the warrior was “ok i’ll give him a chance” and throughout the stage he wasn’t complaining so I guess he’s fine with me. But this necro was so condescending, he blamed our failure during the grawl stage on me, an eng, for lacking dps when I’m already running full knight’s build and grenadier trait (dmg is not outstanding, but not lackluster as well) along with might stacking HGH. I thought its ridiculous because dps means kitten if you can’t survive the mobs/kite/dodge the agony well enough. Not to mention some people in the party have 0 agony so they’re basically 2-agony shot to death. The necro was already complaining taking 5 agony attacks in 2 min, when I just had 3 handed to my face in a row and i was still alive. =/ So infuriating!

I know eng’s can’t do a 10k dmg of a war’s 100b, but I’m pretty happy about my 2k/bomb damage output. I can’t reach the same might-stacking level on a grenadier-spec coz I don’t have runes of altruism yet (or 2/2/2 might duration runes, still thinking which one is better for fractals).

It’s a good example, but does not actually represent what is happening in GW2.

In GW2 there are actually three currencies at play, Cash, Gems and Gold. In this case, a price discount was offered on items denominated in Gems. The only way to acquire Gems is to exchange either Cash or Gold for Gems. Since the rate of Cash to Gems is fixed, discount of the item, in terms of cash, is equivalent to the discount. Since the rate of Gold to Gems is floating, the discount is not equal in terms of Gold.

The example above is illustrated in a two currency system where since the items are priced in terms of one of the two currencies, an equivalence can be demonstrated. It’s a small nuance, but relevant. For example, the discount can be seen across all items in “Amazon”, but in the BLTC, only the two items discounted would demonstrate the Cash discount (all other items would be at the full exchange rate).

It really comes down to a price discount which can not be equated to a exchange rate fluctuation.

I guess I forgot to put in the last part, wherein the more people buy stuff on the amazon deal, the more expensive it gets for people not using USD as their main currency, and ultimately the lesser the discount becomes (if exaggerated like in GW2 even becomes a loss). This way, while there is a correlation between them, it is not linear in nature. It doesn’t matter if the amazon deal is only 1 item or everything, the point is that it generated enough interest to move millions of people to buy USD to drive the price of getting USD higher. I’m merely trying to show people how their discount got “lost”.

Yea but the point is to be able to play with people of any level.

This is false. The point is to make grouping easier, not necessarily people being able to play with other people of any level. (i.e. A person from lvl 2/3/5/6/4 can all group at level 6 instead of each having to find their own respective lvl 2/3/5/6/4 groups. The point is NOT for a lvl 2 to join a lvl 20 group).

@Smooth Penguin.5294 Do you know what ‘Comparing apples with oranges’ means in the general sense?

P.S. One /FF is enough I think (refer to other thread)

@Mourningcry.9428 I was looking at the TP, your example was based on using real currency…it’s like comparing apples with oranges.

The sale was on the price of two items in the gem store. These items are priced in gems. A 20% discount to the price was applied.

Trying to claim a 20% discount in the price of an item in gems should equate to a 20% discount in the floating exchange rate of gold to gems is nonsensical.

Have you ever seen an item in real life cost say $100 before the sale, and during a 20% OFF sale it costs $90? This is very similar, however the onyl thing that differs is that ANet predicts that the price of gems will go up and hence in the end it is not a 20% OFF sale, but much less. It is a marketing gimmick.

Here’s a better example. For example only, say there are two currencies, the USD and the CNY. USD is highly favorable, but cannot be directly earned by most people around the world. Most people rather earn their local currency (in this case, CNY) and use it to buy USD. The only people who can earn USD as USD are people from US. Amazon issues a 20% off discount to all their products. However, people from China, Japan, Brazil, etc don’t have USD on hand so they must buy USD using their local currency. Those people, along with people from the US want to take advantage of this amazing amazon deal such that millions of people from different countries (in this case China and their CNY) suddenly buy USD in that the supply of USD grows thin and thus, increases its value to them. For the Americans, $20 is still $20 since they earn in USD.

The same scenario is happening here. Just translate USD = gems, americans = people who can buy gems, CNY = gold, Chinese = people who usually use gold to buy gems and not irl money, amazon’s deal = bank slot discount.

The only difference is that there really is a limited amount of USD vs the virtually unlimited amount of gems the game can churn out. Thus, the value of gems is not in relation to its supply, but rather how many times and by how much people exchange gold→gems and vice versa.

Econ 101 Question

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

Maybe that’s what he means but just misunderstood the premise itself. I think as lots of people have said there is a virtually unlimited amount of gems and gold in the system such that it’s not a matter of more gold vs more gems, but rather the rate at which people exchange gold → gems and vice versa. For example, given a day with 0 gold<→gem transaction, simply increasing the amount of gold in the system (e.g. farming) will not affect the price of gold<→gem. But with the sale, the amount of people exchanging gold→gem increases the price of gems.

Remove rangers, necros, and engies

My engineer and my necro are my favorite characters. Just because they don’t hold up to the DPS of other classes doesn’t make them superfluous. I find them fun as kitten to play.

Efficiency isn’t everything.

In this game DPS really is everything, especially in dungeons.

I cant count the number of times ive been in a boos fight with my glass cannon warrior and get the boss down below a quarter health mostly by myself then run out of endurence to dodge or finally make a mistake and forget to dodge the boss’s power attack and go down just for the rest of my team to be unable to finish the last 25% of health between the 4 of them and we get wiped.

You really need the DPS output to carry your weight in this game in dungeons, normal PvE not so much, but any group events DPS is king.

They REALLY need to buff the ranger and engineer as far as DPS goes, like double it for a start.

It’s not that they’re not dps-specced, it means they’re not as good as you in that boss fight.

But I’m not indifferent to increasing back the damage from nades again

Finishing your dailies for Laurels.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

It doesn’t matter how many times you log in, you still get the same laurels according to the work you’ve put into it.

If someone doesn’t log in and doesn’t complete his achievements he doesn’t get a laurel, but why should he ? Because he didn’t do anything for it, right ?

And yes you have a point someone who does it every day will get it faster than someone who doesn’t but then again that’s the system with everything, if you want a full set of armor you need to do dungeons, etc,…

One thing they could however change about it, is that it would be possible to catch up, that you have a chanse to finnish previous dailys but then again the name wouldn’t be daily achievement anymore…

Well . . . there already is something like that because the Daily resets at the same time every day. In the States, that’s 7pm EST I think? It’s technically possible to do two Dailies in the same day if you can time it right . . .

I don’t think so. If you’re not able to do the daily for the day before the reset, after the time marker has passed (exactly after, say, 8am), the next time you relog or change map, your daily req would’ve changed already.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I used to complain as well about it. But you can only complain and sigh for so long. At that point either three things are gonna happen: you quit coz you honestly can’t take the extra gear climb, you still play but shy away from fractals/ascended stuff, or you eventually cave in to doing them.

Eventually, I started doing fractals and getting my rings. If stats are all you need, it’s fairly easy to get the rings that you want. Just do them until level 10, and keep repeating lvl 10 over and over till you get your ring or till you get enough pristine talics for it. Amulets are a daily laurel thing so it shouldn’t be a problem. The last problem is the backpiece, which costs 1850 fractal relics. Now this might seem much, but if you do enough runs, eventually you’ll get yours.

I wasn’t even aware it was a jumping puzzle till I finished at the top. I was like “huh… so that’s why it was so long, it’s a jumping puzzle”. But seriously, it’s not very difficult, the path is going up is a bit obvious, and there are no “trick” jumps, and if you fall, you don’t start all over (like skipping stones >.>)

This is way harder than the vizier’s tower, esp at the top, where you have to jump to the branch and you can only jump there from the top leaf (not the bottom) and without speed buffs =/

Sometimes, I undercut a large margin because I want to help lower the prices, especially for mats. You say I’m cutting profits for myself and for others, I see it as a public service where more people can afford more mats.

Bad Economy

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

John,

The problem here is not really about your TP or economy system design. It’s pretty much the best I’ve seen in any game. But this is not an economy game. There was a HUGE mistake by placing the legendary and its prerequisites as TP listed objects.

We are here to play as adventurers, we are warriors, archers and wizards. We kill Ogres, Trolls and Dragons. We simply don’t care about economy and I don’t need more gold that what’s needed to get a beer barrel and sharpen my axe. Now,… how did the big end rewards for long term achievements ended up bottle neck in the TP?

This is why people complain.

Nobody complained in Wow when players reached ridiculous amount of gold, because all the big shines were at the end of a dungeon and everyone who can make it (playing the game) there would have access to it.

I can tell you from my personal experience that this is not the case for us guild warriors. I achieved almost anything the game has to offer. From Dungeon Master tittle, to world completition, WvW kills, even the whole jumping puzzle list. I have hundreds of Dragon and many other big bosses kills. I like to go exploring and solo whatever champion I find around…. I even went far on Fractals just to experience the hardest content. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying come here and hand me a Legendary; but why is it that I’m SO far from it? Even if I get lucky enough to get a precursor… I’m would still around 400g away from it. I’ve been doing dungeons and anything at my reach on daily basis… I play every day and have over 850 hours in my Warrior. The one and only thing I don’t do is play the TP and this is why “I fail” at this and can’t have my Legendary yet. It all comes to this… economy and TP. The huge bottle neck of the game for us who plays the game.

Of course, you don’t NEED a Legendary to play the game, but so far it is the only one big reward implemented and of course, us adventurers; think we deserve a better chance at getting one that the people standing inside Lions Arch the whole day.

1. Who are you to dictate how players should play the game? Contrary to nature, a lot of people gain “fun” from playing the market. Case in point, neopets (if you know that). Stupid cute web page game, but has a “stock market” section. Even if it wasn’t advertised, the feature is there and people derive fun out of playing with it.

2. The fact that there are multiple people who have multiple legendaries (which some, i reckon, aren’t tp players) indicate that legendaries are attainable and fine as they are.

Bad Economy

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

Prices are inflating faster than real, normal players can make money, and whenever normal players find a way, they nerf it, so only exploiters, manipulators, and no-life basement dwellers have access to anything beyond the most basic of basic visual upgrades.

WoW provided a much higher supply for in-demand end-game items, resulting in prices which were high, but still stable, and thus attainable by people who slowly but surely worked toward that goal.

This is especially true for crafting and DR on loot.

In other games, if the price of something on the TP is too high, you can get it yourself. The end result will certainly not net you a profit if you use them to craft, but you will slowly reach your goal of crafting that weapon skin.

Try doing it in this game, try farming a stack of lodestones I dare you!

Do you realize, the faster/more people farm for gold (sell loot to npc, do dungeon runs, etc), the faster they inflate goods?

Loot Solo vs Group

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

It’s not really more/better loot, but easier time to “tag” mobs. Tagging mobs is dealing enough damage to warrant an exp and loot reward from it. Somehow, if you’re solo, you need to deal more dmg to be able to successfully “tag” the mob. If you’re in a party, the damage is spread out over your party mates (which is why it’s also important your mates are hitting the same mob/group of mobs as you are, assuming you’re doing AOE) such that you only need to deal less damage to successfully “tag” the mob, hence, earning you the right to exp and loot for that mob (group of mobs).

Why Represent another Guild Causes Rage?

Heya.

I’m wondering since we can have several guilds, but really we can’t. Because all guilds don’t want us to stop representing them.

Why soo many rage? Why isn’t the multi-guild system working in a better way?

I have 2 guilds I’d like to play with, but they demand me to represent all the time. I just try to be Offline to avoid be warned about not representing and still be in the two of them.

The guilds aren’t really of the samething, one is PVE, other is WvW, and I hate when I’m events with PVE Guild getting rage from officers of the WvW one saying to represent it. Argh.

Update: I just left both of them right now, now i’m without guild, and wont be able to enter a new guild of my language because can’t find any without that rule… But that’s Ok.

Seems like you can speak english pretty well. You can always just join a normal guild. I’m not an american myself (I’m from the Phil) and I’m pretty sure there are a few Filipino guilds there. But just because we speak the same language doesn’t mean I should join them. I’m having more fun with my australian+us+someplace else and canadian-friends guilds. I’d suggest to find a group of cool people who are cool about representing or not. Imo, the quality of people is the thing you should look at first.

1. Put all the ores into your bank storage
2. Set “craft 250 ingots”
3. Craft them
4. Take a break, eat a snack, smoke a cigarette, watch silly cat videos on youtube
5. ????
6. Profit!

No titles for crafters?

in Suggestions

So I guess you’re against “Combat Healer” as well, because all it shows is that you spent a couple of hours reviving players and NPCs. Or “Master Crafter”, because all it shows is that you spent 8 hours levelling 8 professions (I’m sure you already have this one, right? After all, by your maths it’s so trivial to get!). Or “Been There Done That”, because all it shows is that you spent 2 days running around hitting map markers.

Oh, wait, that’s how you get pretty much all achievements and titles: By spending time playing the game, and some of them take more time than others.

Now, you might say that reaching 400 in a craft takes too little time (or too much time). Maybe you maxed out all your professions in the first day (I didn’t, I think most people didn’t). But that’s a separate discussion.

The issue here is: Shouldn’t the fact that you’ve reached the maximum possible skill level in a craft allow you to use that craft as a title for your character? Aren’t real life chefs typically called “Chef X”, even when they’re nowhere near the top of the skill ladder?

Besides, no one forces you to “wear” any title. If you think you “don’t deserve it”, don’t select it.

I have no interest in the title “Master Crafter”, and it gives other players no information about what my current active crafts even are. If I could wear “Master Chef” (or “Master Artificer”, etc.), other players I come across would know that I took that particular craft more seriously (seriously enough to pick it as my displayed title), meaning I probably have some recipes that most other chefs (or artificers, etc.) don’t.

It’s good for role-playing, it’s good for trading, and it has absolutely no downsides (except, apparently, making you angry because someone else got something that doesn’t affect you in any way).

Yey I spent 1hr getting the master crafting title. I so deserve 8 more separate titles.
/endsarcasm

The reason why I think this is an irrelevant suggestion is that getting a craft to 400 is way too easy to be deserving of a title. Sure you can argue that the mad king apprentice or the volunteer are also really easy, but they’re part of an in-game event, ergo, being more special and enticing more players to participate. They are not a form of reward to… reward people for their hard work.

Titles like Dungeon Master and Master Crafter are titles that DO reward people for their hard work. While it could be nice that you can have your individual crafting titles, its just too easy to get them, they’re not tied to an event, and giving them that way is not a proper way of rewarding people for their hard work.

See
“Oh you got an A in Calculus? Good job! You deserve a car.”
vs
“Oh you graduated Magna/Summa kitten Laude? Good job! You deserve a car.”
and tell me which one is more believable.

You are right it doesn’t affect me any way. Yet it sets a deadly precedent wherein even the most menial things are rewarded with such prestigious things like titles and in doing so, make acquiring them less rewarding and fulfilling.

EDIT: Oh god someone necro’d this thread >.>

No tnx please. I can’t remember how many times a group of us 70-80 people wipe at AC explo whereas some groups with 40-50s clear it with ease.

Ok big boys, let's brainstorm

in Crafting

penatbater.4710

Let’s look at what factors or traits we want to “reward” by giving the legendary. Do we look at

1.) Effort (categorized by something easy to do yet repetitive)
2.) Skill
2.1 Skill in open-world pve
2.2 skill in dungeons
2.3 skill in wvw
2.4 skill in jumping puzzle
3.) Wealth
4.) RNG

? Or a better question is, how much % do we reward such acts?

Until we answer these questions, we can’t begin to start how to implement suggestions for it.

Honestly, if we want them to be doable by everyone without being a huge gold sink, just make a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally difficult dungeon run (think SE inquest path before nerf) with a small chance to drop precs (and dropping exotics/rares at a higher chance than other dungeons).

No. And all dungeon chests already have a chance (super duper low) to drop precs.
