If u full glasscannon with 11.5k hp, assasins signet and might on signet use then yea… but in this case u have nothing to do out of stealth, becouse you will get killed in 2 hits. Well u will get killed in 2 hits no matter u stealthed or not.

you can use Shadow refugee,blind powder, etc… to scape.

A thief is OP because , altought is a Glass Cannon he can leave the combat always.

Not when ppl around you is aware that you have killed their mate and you are probablly stomping him. And w8ing for cooldowns to get a kill and have a slight chance to get out alive is not fun at all. If you even manage to get out alive after all that blind weapon swinging around you… you probablly gonna die from conditions if u didnt have hide in shadows ready. GC is highly dependant on cooldowns …

ofc, you try to kill a player that is not “into” the zerg dude……shadow refugee, use blind powder, and run far from you own refugee, people will attack the refugge area.

btw, you can kill a balanced bunker too, perhaps you need 1 or 2 HS, my main is a ranger, and i never play with thief because is really op, EZ Way.

9/10 players are not ranger class they are mostly guardian,mesmer,thieves(infinite sign here) or elementalist.

I play on T1 PvP, and unless you intend on just flat out zerging my pet..1 person, even 2 will not bring it down before I pet swap usually…. I won’t lie and say it’s not possible… But if you’re not speccing 30 into BM, don’t kitten about your pet sucking..

Also the difference between your pet having 300 toughness/vit is actually fairly huge….Hell it’s major even on a player in terms of survivability.

We are talking about W3, i tried with 30 in BM, and it is true that pet had more survivality but, the diference was 3-4 secs (2-3 hits).

Dunno in Spvp, but inW3, pet need a damage mitigation.

No other class using a range weapon has to switch thier traits to be able to fully use their dps on a keep wall. Why should I give up qz, sharpening stone or another ability to have the same dps every other class has? Does a warrior carrying a rifle have to go out of combat and switch traits to make his F1 abitlity work? If my pet has 900 range and the enemy is in range he should attack every time. Guard should be an option to put melee pets on wall but not the only option to use my pets. It’s not about knowing the class but class mechanics working correctly.

No other class has like 3k Range and the ability to stand outside of LoS to do damage either.

Either you know something most rangers don’t and really would love to, or you just made your own ignorance very clear.

But please, how do we get 3k range again? Personally I can only get 1.5k. I’d love to have the same range as a Balista! Go on.

Our Pets basically have 3k clip range…I’ve personally sent mine outside of keeps to attack siege when we didn’t have any…You can do this basically over and over again and they can’t do anything about it.

Um, no? I’ve sent my pet in to kill siege many a times.. Maybe if you’re running a kittening cat with 0 points in BM you can’t, but with just about any other pet you can!

PS: it’s apparent you don’t use guard, the CD isn’t 60s

Difference between youe cat and my cat, 300stat, 2 hit more to die…..ofc i can send my pet to kill siege, but if you have 40 foes near , your pet will die really fast.

seems that you fight against brainless people……

PS: You have 60 cd, when your PET DIE, i never said nothing about guard :P.

Culling has nothing to do with it. IF you time Cnd right, start casting it in stealth, but hit same second u leave stealth you are barelly noticed.

it is funny to read you, sometimes a thief8or a mesmer) can hit you like 4-5 times and you will sea a nice UNKNOWN HIT YOU FOR X.

10 vs 80 and you win?? nice joke, you vs 80 in a full upgraded keep with people running from walls??be real, 10 vs 80 you will LOSE 90% times, and you will win against 80 if you are in a full upgraded and fortified keep/castle against people without siege machines.

against zergs you can win battles, but you will lose the match.

Why post unrelated information to his thread? Look at the list of abilities he used, does that really look like p/d? If its P/D just make them miss CnD twice and they have no init.

Well, he listed “HB” and “Discharge”, neither of which are thief skills in English. I can only conclude that he’s playing in another language and the translations are different. HB could be HS (Heartseeker), but Discharge?

He used the same names elsewhere on the forums, but heck if I know what he’s referring to.

since 2 or 3 days i have been facing some thieves with infinite initiative, seems that they can spam skills forever , ¿it is a new bug or something? now we must fight against infinite initiative and culling bug.?

You last couple guys didn’t read the OP. He’s talking about P/D. Rangers are viable vs burst thieves but not P/D. The entire problem is not being able to put away the pet. Traps and immune etc are fairly worthless vs P/D. The build isn’t squishy at all. Mine has over 21K health and 2500 armor. In sPvP they will likely have less armor but do more bleed damage.

short answer, a ranger CANT win against a good thief, if you are lucky and avoid the initial damage and thief is stupid you can kill him, but if not he will use stealth to reset combat, blame Anet.

Ranger class was really good in the last beta test event, and mesmer class was bad ( all mesmers were crying at forum) ,in the release, Ranger class was supernerfed and mesmer was overpowered, WHY?

Pet is better now than in the release? OFC, but is bad yet.
Ranger GS is better now than in Release? yes, but is bad yet.
Ranger SB is better now than in release?yes, oh wait, NO, Anet nerfed shortbow.
Ranger Longbow is better now than in release?no.
The best pet traits are in Beastmaster, uhm,no, Skirmish.
Signet are now better than in the release? they only changed Signet of Stone, we must use 30 points in MARKMANSHIP

If pet is 40% of our dps, pet MUST hit 100% , now perhaps hit 40%-50% , you can kite pets and kill a ranger without problems, it is really easy,because pets are STUPID, they need better IA(long range pet move to melee distance 90% of time).

We have a lot of utilities that are for pets, but if pets are bad, utilities are bad too.

GW1 ranger is best than GW2 ranger, you have lot of builds (WITH OR WITHOUT PET) , and here you only have 1 or 2.

You cant compare a ranger with a thief because ranger against a thief is normally a dead ranger if the thief knows how to play his char, but is due to game design not to PRO Thieves.

yesterday a bunch of thieves (4-5) in WvWvW, casting all time Shadow Refuge (oh yes, 4-5 shadows refuges…) and killing people pressing 2 all time , was “fun” and sad, soo much power in a kitten broken mechanic and a single skill without cooldown, you dont need skill, you need a focking finger………

Sounds to me like someone doesn’t understand how thieves work… Or is making stuff up entirely.

i leveled a thief to 80, only to try thief class, actually im playing with a ranger (main pj), because thief is really op, is too easy to kill with him, you can literally spam any skill (Hb,discharge,etc)to kill people, if you have any problem, stealth and backstab, +1 kill….

We must wait til Anet fix Culling to nerf or not stealth ( mesmer use stealth culling bug ofc).

Also you realise that Rangers can kill just as quick as Thieves?
The only difference is that the Thief sits in melee range, and the ranger at 1200 range.

On the issue itself, I don’t really know Rangers well enough to give constructive feedback on how to beat P/D Thieves. All I can really say is that in all the PvP I’ve done, I have yet to meet a Ranger I could not kill. Some do put up a decent fight and may cause me to run if I haven’t got my CDs ready but in a straight up fight, Rangers don’t have a chance.

Then again, 90% of Rangers are pretty poor players so there’s that.

As for countering P/D Thieves in general, this depends a bit on their build. Denying them C&D can help, but it won’t always win your the fight. Especially with 15 points in Trickery they can afford to miss the odd C&D.

The only times I really die as a P/D Thief is when I get caught by extreme burst damage coupled with CC. Something like a Bullcharge + 100 Blades or a Knockdown while others are DPSing me all while Shadowstep is down can result in death.

But again, I don’t know Rangers well enough to give tangible advice on their specific mechanics.

lol, dude, if our pet die we LOSE dps, all other class nevers lose dps , they always have 100% dps on each hit, our pet is STUPID, you can kite a pet forever, so, 40% of our dps is RANDOM sometimes pet will hit sometimes not.

if i DONT evade kill shot im dead, if i dont evade shortbow shot im ALIVE, i have plenty of time to move (yes obstructed,obstructed bug) while you shot at me, if i roll 1 time, i will dodge 2-3 arrows.

We have Pet utilities, what happens to pet utilities (signets for example) when our pet die?, uhm, we lose effectiveness and dps.

outdamage?? PFFF, WAS A BAD TEST, because, if i have 10k hp with 1 kill shot im dead, if i have 10k hp and a rangert hit me for 1k , ten times, i have plenty of time to move, dodge, or attack the ranger.

Burst vs sustained damage, in a 1vs1 environment burst is better(mesmer shatter , thief mug+CnD+backstab, eles combo, engineer bombs+rifle).

The problem with ranger is that we NEVER hit with our max dps, because our pet is stupid, f2 skill should be instant but is a joke (3-5 sec delay), if our pets die we have a “dps debuff”and are really easy to kill (you can have them in passive and will die from aoes….),longbow have a “distance” debuff , all other classes can hit you with 100% of is dps power in each attack and in each situation , we cant…

EDIT: Obviously not talking about THIS build…but thieves in general probably have the highest hitting single attack in the game.

For a single hit warriors hold that honor with Kill Shot. For damage done via a single ability against a single target that honor would be held by warriors with Hundred Blades. For total damage output by a single skill? Probably some kind of longterm pulsing AE hitting 5 targets every second. Maybe it is thieves, Caltrops could theoretically do something like 65,000 damage over 18~ seconds and 5 targets if they all rolled around in them for the whole duration.

I have a guildie who runs a shatterer Mesmer build.
We wait until all (4-5) people group on on the middle point to cap it, and instead of teamfighting, he just instakills the whole group, giving us pretty much the edge we need to win every single tournament, since we then just put a bunker bomb Engeneer on the side point next to our spawn point, and me as Support Necro with a DPS CC Guardian on the main point, while having 2 roamers for buffs and objectives.

People complaining about Thieves make me laugh every time i see 5 people getting nuked from 100 to zero in one second by that mesmer.

For the Thief build i focus on Toughness, Con dmg and Healing.

You say “back then” in which case this might have been when you could use items in pvp/wvw (liek revive orbs). There is some item you can buy that lets you stealth (from Charr area). Could well have been that, depends on how long ago this “back then” was. If it’s recent then I have no idea beyond what I’ve already said.

dude, is a problem of game balance, all classes need more than one or 2 viable specs, and now you have 1 or 2 ….

It seems pretty straightforward to me. You adjust your role to the playstyle you prefer to use. There is no way on earth that this or any other game can be “balanced” to allow every class to be fully competitive in all situations (zerg, siege, defense, roamer, etc) against every other class (1v1) or combination of classes (1vN). If you think otherwise you haven’t really thought it through very well.

if you put atleast 5 points into beastmaster you’re pet’s f2 is almost insta-cast. if you’re running melee ranger you and you’re pet are going to be nearby the target.

oh yes MELEE RANGER, have sense…… dont know why Anet said that Rangers are goods with bows…….omg….

sry but i want to use pets that i like not one specific pet that can live 10s longer because of ranged attack in dungeon for eg.
melee pets do not attack from behind which leads to beign one shoted by frontal cone attacks
even bears should attack from behind which will make the target to turn its back to us
Pets do not have aoe dmg reduction which is another problem

Yes they are not useless but they are not good enough either
And pls tell me how a little bird got 2k vit but a big cat got only 1.3 ?
Cats might be the best dps but beign 1-2 shoted reduces the dps to zero
Pets are good as long as the player do not go into dungeon, group event to fight champion or to PvP unless it is 1v1

I take wolves into dungeons all the time, I’ve soloed group events since lvl 15, and have soloed all but 2 champs without losing pets also since lvl 15… you are doing it wrong.

No, in pve pets are nice, in WvWvW or sPvP need fixes, all other classes can hit you with 100% of his dps in each attack but you only hit with 60-70% because your pet must move all time to be able to hit and is too kiteable.

it is a custom build, i only use it for fun in WvWvW, never tried in sPvp or hotjoin.

Been seeing more melee rangers in spvp recently and while I can 1v1 most, there was one who gave a good fight that lasted upwards of a minute with my staff ele (semi-bunker spec). He kept swinging around me like a thief’s flanking strike and evaded a lot of attacks. Tough to damage and still dealt a lot of pressure even with my heals. I forgot which weapons he used but looked like a sword or greatsword. Is there a particular melee build popular atm?

i had a fight with a ele (asura) for 2-3 min , 1 or 2 days ago, i lost at the end because the pet was unable to land enough hits :P.

The fact is that a ranger cant hit with 100% of his dps because the pet must hit at same time too, all other classes can use 100% of his dps in any situation.

you can dodge kill shot or not, i have plenty of time to dodge volley, if i fail dodging kill shot im dead.

and, Aridia, sometimes, i need to wait for 10 sec to use wolfs fear, Pets IA……

I do not agree my fellow poster, making us like thieves will kill the class overall.

Besides the OP asked for any changes to the class.

so, buff skills or bows all other class can outdps a ranger, half of our damage is supposed to be the pet, but the pet is STUPID, if the enemy is moving pet will fail a lot of attacks, but our enemy (he dont have pet) can hit with 100% sof is dps in each attack.

How are the rangers these days...

Raise time between invis, now you have a 5 sec debuff, change it to 7-8 sec, thief fixed.

Fist, the “reveled” condition lasts 3 seconds not 5 (whitch shows how much you know about the thief profession) and second if this condition cd is to be increased then the thieves base HP and thoughness need to me raised as well since stealth is the thieves main defense.

It is called missclick dude.

ofc, Anet should change stealth to, you have 100% more HP and armor while you are in stealth.
Thief is totally unbalanced in the game if you compare his damage/survivality with other classes, a glass cannon must die fast, but with stealth + stealth issues a thief is imposible to kill if you are a good player.

And yes, initiative is a broken mechanic too, you can spam fast and without cooldowns ,burst attacks all the time.
