During a morning meeting, I learned that some players in Europe have recently been experiencing latency issues. I see posts in a few of the forums, so I’m creating this thread to try to gather and focus your input to help us analyze this issue. (If y’all can share the link to this thread with others, that’ll help us gather info more quickly. Thanks!)
If you’ve recently noticed an increase in latency or lag, please post in this thread with the following:
(Since slowed FPS is a different issue and is not always related to lag, I will make a separate thread for that.)
Edit: Changing to “analyze” since when I write the six-letter wordthat starts with an “as” and ends with an “sess” I get kittenized. ~roll eyes~

Correct thanks Shadow and all for helping Palador with his questions. Would love to see you take part Palador, everyone is welcome.

Except for pdavis….He’s kind of a kitten anyway so….
:P
Lies you are like the rest of the community awesome.
Chris
Thanks to everyone in this thread for being so nice. I’m excited about the opportunity I’ve been given and will have more to say in the future.
<3 to you all!
Thank you for the awesome discussion you’ve all generated here. I provided this thread to the folks in charge of Living World so that they can read all your feedback.
Thanks again for the great discussion. If you have further points to contribute, please do.
To those who have participated: thanks with sticking with this process so far. I know that we lost a few folks along the way, but I understand why.
As I mentioned here, I will be locking these threads and will be putting them together to send over to the devleopers for feedback.
Ideally, I will be highlighting one post per thread—one which succinctly compiles all the feedback. This is what I will be looking for. If I don’t find that, I will do my best to capture the feedback from each thread overall.
Here is what is stickied:
Thank you, all.

Oooh
I had no idea that nodejs works with IIS.
It’s not nodejs, it just works like it. We use ARR as a load-balancer and HTTPS endpoint which is why you’re thinking we use IIS.

Already taken care of. We’re pretty vigilant about naming violations.
I’ve submitted two tickets and still haven’t got much of an answer. You guys don’t seem all that thrilled to atleast tell me the length of suspension, let alone the reasoning.
You should only ever submit one ticket, multiple tickets resets your place in the queues. And, given the nature of your ticket, you’ll be escalated all the way up to me. Do you have your ticket number handy?
Is the public API written in .NET? You might be able to get better performance if you use Task.WhenAny() to process requests as soon as they complete. Waiting for all requests to complete before handling their response means wasted CPU time. Client applications will benefit as well if they support streaming JSON while it is still being created.
We don’t use .NET & for simplicity’s sake we don’t stream responses right now. We’re processing each individual request as soon as it completes but we’re not blocking on the responses or anything. It works like nodejs, conceptually.
Most use-cases for the data in /prices don’t actually require the freshest data in the world. You can get it from /listings in that case if you do need data with a lower cache time, with the caveat that if it gets abused we’ll need to up the cache time on /listings until it isn’t much fresher than /prices.
The /v2/items API doesn’t know about 9102 either. I wonder if the /v1 API feeding it hasn’t been updated correctly? Not something I’ve got a hand in so tough to answer.
/v2/items API isn’t active yet as we’re still polishing up some bits. I’m just providing examples to hopefully answer questions and maybe unblock folks that are writing libs that want to consume /v2 APIs.
+1 to what Tom said =)
Edit: One more thing, it’s great that the conversation is happening. I’d suggest including the players in such conversations. The current mess with LFG griefing was caused by keeping a conversation about fixing instance ownership behind closed doors. The exact issue that is happening now was brought up by players several times prior to the last patch — if we’d be included in some discussion on the topic, we can help catch these issues before they’re made live. Not to mention that this would help repair the lack of faith and trust issues that exist between the dungeon community and the development team. Just a thought.
ArenaNet agrees that communication is key. We’re diving into the forums a lot more than in the past with more freedom to candidly discuss our thought process. I can say that, for me, I’ve already had something brought to my attention today that I hadn’t realized was an issue.
Thanks to everyone that is constructively involved!
- #1 & #2
1st offense would be suspension.
2nd time would be bye-bye.
– #3
It wouldn’t matter outside of doing bad things. A seller being involved is irrelevant to the outcome of our investigation.
Also – any time an account has multiple notes for being a ‘bad seed’ we take those other things into account and make decisions on a case by case basis. That’s why you hear us spout that phrase so often.

Hey!
If you are having difficulty accessing your account check out our article on the subject here: https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/27697643-Trouble-Logging-In.
If we come up with what appears to be a solid idea for Guild Halls, will ANet actually carry through with it and put the work into making it and making it right?
You’re never going to get an answer to this question. The absolutely official response is that ANet will never let us in on any projects they’re working on before they are released. There are a lot of reasons for this, and I understand why they have that stance.
That being said, if they ever were to want to implement guild halls, and if they were to use ideas here, they would still never tell us about it until it’s launched. That’s just how it works. So, whether this whole thing is a hypothetical, or whether it actually goes somewhere, it’s not ANet’s policy to tell us, nor should they be obligated to either way.
If you don’t want to “waste your time” discussing hypotheticals like this, then you don’t have to. Some of us love knowing that they’re listening to our ideas, even if nothing ever comes out of it. Just having the discussion and spreading the ideas is enough for most of us.
Correct thanks Shadow and all for helping Palador with his questions. Would love to see you take part Palador, everyone is welcome.

I read that quote as if someone boots you from a dungeon without reason (The ability to kick is in the game for a reason.) Please report they will take the necessary action to correct and curb this behavior. The action taken depends on the situation, circumstances, and habits of said player doing the kicking.
Correct. This is in regards to the recent increase in players joining a group in a pair; booting the legit players at a boss to troll or holding the party at ransom (Pay or we’ll kick). That’s a behavior we’re not cool with.
I don’t like scammers. >=( I crush them with my ban-hammer and it brings me joy.
Now, in regards to getting booted -
It is not allowed and we will take action against accounts we find doing this. This is monitored in-game but if you are able to report please do so as thousands of eyes are better than a team of GMs.
The fact that there are people doing this simply sucks and needs to be corrected and I want to assure you that my team actively takes issues like these to production to raise awareness (as do other devs that frequent the forums). I have been approached by multiple leads on ways to correct and curb this behavior and the conversation is happening.
Hi guys!
I wanted to give you a quick rundown on what involvement Customer Support takes regarding defrauding/scamming. Let’s look at the two parts of this:
1. We do not reimburse wealth lost to other players for any reason if it is outside of the Black Lion Trading Post. This is because Customer Support can not duplicate wealth. With the volume of requests coming in we alone would damage the economy if we were to restore wealth lost when trading takes place.
2. We terminate accounts permanently for defrauding (scamming). If you are found to make a deal to trade (say, sword for gold) and not hold up your end we will investigate and terminate. If you are the victim of a scam you should submit a support ticket and provide what you lost and the time and date as accurately as you recall. This is usually all we need to research the event but we will ask you if we need more info. You do have a right to know the outcome of these investigations but be aware these take us a few days to resolve.
Please be sure to include the full details of your trade via game chat (any channel is fine) in Guild Wars 2
We absolutely must be able to see the deal being made to find guilt. Do not use voice chat software or other means to communicate while making a sale/trade.
Again; this will help us terminate accounts that are cheating other players but will not result in a recovery of your losses.
Please understand that you are allowed to trade outside of the BLTP – but you will not receive replacements for lost items or gold. The same goes for selling dungeon runs. CS will not suspend or terminate you for selling runs. We will, however, take action if you take payment and not fulfill your end of the bargain.
I’ll watch this thread for questions and clarify where needed. Thanks!

You guys are cracking me up.
Rewards are time-based now. These players must be in their match for the same amount of time as any other server. We cannot necessarily stop people from ‘playing’ oddly for their fixed amount of rewards unless it’s an actual exploit.

Yifang – All tickets we have received regarding these issues have been sent replies. If you have not yet received a reply, please PM me the email address associated with your account and I will look into it. It is possible that the ticket is assigned to another team. If this is the case I can move it and begin speaking with you personally.
Hi John,
I saw this video on Extra Credits today.
http://youtu.be/W39TtF14i8IWould you say this is an accurate overview of MMO economics? I think I see a lot of concepts there that match elements of the economy in GW2.
Also, the video talks about how a treasury can influence inflation by controlling how much money is minted and that can be mirrored in an MMO by controlling how much gold is dropped by mobs. We’ve seen you do this with champ bags but do you also control the gold drops from regular mobs in a similar manner?
I’ve never noticed a change in coins from mobs but then it’s such a tiny amount that I typically ignore it. However, a tiny amount for me would be a huge amount on a global scale and any changes to that would have a not insignificant impact on the economy.
It’s an interesting video, but I agree with the comment made in the beginning, that was not enough time to explain the concepts involved.
For example, Printing money and not printing money isn’t really how inflation is controlled in real life, but if you only have 30 seconds to explain what inflation is you aren’t going to start talking about the government policies to change money supply.
I like the medium too, it’s a fun watch, but overall there’s so little content that it leaves me with an incomplete feeling.
In terms of printing money in game: How often have gold rewards been adjusted with the main purpose of adjusting inflation/deflation?
Could you see a significant change in the amount of gold that was present in the economy for exampe after dungeon rewards or champ bags were introduced or gold rewards from champ bags got taken away?
1. No comment :P
2. Yes, the changes in aggregate happen almost immediately.
Is the economy designed around rewards or are rewards designed around the economy? (not talking about appearances ofc)
I’m not sure I entirely understand this question, could you elaborate?
What is the main consideration for the distribution (probability/requirements) of rewards? How it’ll effect the economy? How it’ll be perceived by the player base?
The designers and I discuss the changes, each time new content is released is a different story/plan/result.
Not trying to be rude, but is there an answer to my questions I asked a few days ago ?
Hi Kitten,
Sorry I haven’t forgotten just super busy. I will get back to you shortly.
Chris
Here are some more questions to answer if you are experiencing lag spikes:
If you have stability you’re immune to the self-knockback.

I have no clue if the Frog will return. But Gaile loves knowing you all miss the frog.
We have identified a bug with the free banker and are working on a fix.
Edit: This should be fixed now.

Update on helpful information:
Trying using this command instead of a tracert, and PM me the results:
“pathping -4 -q 100 <ServerIP>”
This is most helpful if you do it DURING the lag spike!
I got the same thing trying to log on. The thing is, this is the 3rd time I’ve been report abused by players in pvp. It seems fairly easy to receive a ban as long as five or more people report you, regardless of whether it in fact was a reportable incident. While yours may only be 72 hours, I’m probably looking at 400+ just because a group of players decided that it would cool to report me for little to no reason. I’m not saying I’m innocent every single time (I guess repeatedly saying I am one of the best pvp rangers counts as an insult?) but it doesn’t make sense that I’m called a “f***ing f**got” then I am the same one to get a ban.
Your suspension was well deserved. If you’d like to know more please submit a support ticket and we’d be thrilled to discuss it with you.
I just wanted to let you know that we are aware of these issues and are working to get them resolved.
With that said, I would like to see how many people are still experiencing these issues. If you are still having issues since the September patch, please update this thread and let us know exactly what issue you are experiencing.
Explain the issue you are seeing?
Are you getting any error messages? If so what are they?
Are you able to work around this issue by doing something specific such as deleting the gw2 folder or running a repair etc?
Thanks!
We’re aware of the issues detailed in this thread and are investigating ways to address them. The most likely culprit is the way latency is interacting with how Steal is scripted.
Thanks for the reports and the video evidence!
Huh, I can see how it would be frustrating for it to restart the spinning. Perhaps there is a happy middle ground where it starts out spinning then once you move the camera it stops.
Great discussion so far! I came back from a couple of meetings and was blown away to see so many excellent ideas and constructive posts.
A couple of ideas seem to be taking root in the discussion. One is the idea of voting to dismantle siege. We were talking about that one while reading this thread and think a version of it might work. Straight up dismantling siege will probably lead to a different type of griefing or even a legitimate group deciding that they don’t like someone else’s legitimate placement of siege so they dismantle it. However if a piece of siege gets let’s say 10 votes we could drop the timer on it to something like 5 minutes. That way one group could not simply remove another groups siege if they are manning it or planning to man it. We would probably need to make an exception for Golems.
A number of people talked about having the dismantled siege go back to nearby supply depots. One idea we kicked around was dropping a portion of the supply that it took to build the siege as a one time pick up.
There were a number of suggestions around labelling dropped siege to allow players decide which siege to build. I like the idea of filtering dropped siege. Maybe you could have some of the following settings:
If siege dropped doesn’t meet one of the settings you pick, you won’t get an interact for them.
The exhaustion idea that I kicked out there has had some mixed responses. There were some amazingly good ideas to make it work a whole lot better. For example, I really liked the suggestions that the cool down time is reduced for each member of your squad. I am really concerned though about the affects that you guys brought up on small havok groups and defenders. There were some suggestions that I think would make it work. For example, a couple of suggestions were along the lines of if you are actively playing it will clear your exhaustion. So if you down an enemy, break down a gate, destroy enemy siege etc. your exhaustion would be cleared.
If we tweaked Exhaustion to this would it work? :
We aren’t tied to this idea at all. I’m just collecting and shaping some of your suggestions on this idea in large part because a lot of people seemed to like it. I’m wondering if there is a version that would work for everyone.
Some sort of community policing also came up a bunch in this discussion. I think there were some great and promising ideas there. But, generally the concern with that comes down to a few things. How many people would be needed to get a person banned? What if not that many people are on? At what lower number will we have to start worrying about groups kicking members of another group because of petty arguments?
Finally, regarding swinging ye olde banhammer, that’s an option but if we can make some reasonable adjustments that greatly reduces the need for that option it will really be the better way to go. I would very much like to steer clear of falling back to that option in this discussion.
Thanks again for all the great suggestions!
John
I have a level 49 character that I play infrequently. I noticed today that I no longer have a green star on the map and my personal story is no longer showing int he content guide. WTF? Why should I have to track down obscure parts of release notes to continue playing the game? This is KITTENED!
As mentioned in the update notes, the stories are now in “chapters” that unlock every 10 levels. Once you hit L50 the next story chapter will unlock.

Most of you know that Gaile has moved from Customer Support to a new (and very awesome) role over at the Community team. She’s still nearby so I think I can still hit her with my trebuchet – I’ll report results soon.
What this means, simply, is that she won’t be handling CS tickets anymore.
/cry, go ahead. I’ll give you a moment.
…
…
That does not mean you’re losing her. She’ll be very active on the forums and involved directly with the direction our communication with you heads. I will happily answer your questions if you have any.
4: The ability to fire Asuran Special Forces into Enemy Keeps with a special Guild Trebuchet!!!!
Isn’t that more WvW? Anyway somebody beat you about 1,5 year with a similar suggestion
I still preferred my suggestion in that thread of taking over a camp and using the enemy flag and then being able to hide in the Dolyak.
Lol (-:
That’s a bug.

For sure, but especially given how the real economy is performing in real life right now, I’d really like to see a clear distinction made between the quantity of spending and the quantity of money and how these are absolutely not the same thing.
It’s probably a bit too wonky, I get it, but whenever I see “printing money = inflation” when we’re in the middle of the biggest natural experiment ever proving conclusively that is not true I die a little inside.
100% agree. I suppose the question to ask is, is it better to attempt to explain the concepts with information that isn’t really as true as they think or leave the concepts shrouded in mystery entirely (this is assuming they have constraints on their video)?
I usually fall strongly on the side of don’t teach incorrectly, ever, give proper information or don’t teach, but misleading people is so bad.
I’m beginning to question that philosophy though, in a game you can afford to not know or care about the economy, it’s a game! In real life you cannot choose to not participate, does even a little half-correct information make people better off or worse off?
