Why is it called “Many Questions so Dev” if the project itself is called “Dolyak Express”? I guess it’s a joke, but I don’t get it. Also, where do you guys get your questions? I thought there would be a thread for people to ask them. Are they instead just gathered from around the forums at large?

The Many Questions, So Dev was indeed a silly meme joke. It was to announce the program itself as a more informal post, with an added Colin meme!

There are answers to 10 frequently asked questions in that topic, but it’s in a 20 days old sticky, so I’m guessing most have missed it. At least I failed to find a dedicated thread about it.

A suggestion for forum mods: I think “Many Questions so Dev” should have its visibility drastically increased. It’s in a 20 days old sticky, and if I didn’t look at Dev Tracker I probably would’ve missed it.

I’m actually in the middle of writing up a new post for questions. Plus, we’ll have an archive set up so you can always see the past Dolyak Express Q&A.

Lore: I loved Scarlet before I learned about her background. Her studying in all 3 Asura universities and in a short amount of time kind of killed the character for me. Was it really necessary to have her finish her studies in all three universities? How relevant do you consider it for the whole plot?

“Without too many spoilers, I can only say that yes this is an important part of the over-all plot. Everything that has happened ties into a bigger story that within will come clear with the final four releases of this current story arc in 2014, saying anything more would give away too much! I can say that we’ve learned a lot about how to try and better pace living world releases in the future, in particular from all the great feedback we’ve received this year, and from our recent collaborative development discussion.

For future stories after the current one is completed we’ll work to get a more of the core plot out earlier so folks can get engaged earlier on. We’re also going to try and shorten up stories into more easy to digest chunks that have clear starts and ends, and though there may be a larger plot behind them still we want to tie-up more smaller stories very neatly on a regular basis so it feels like the story has clear progression. Once our current story completes, I think people will realize everything that happened for the last year all suddenly ties together in a pretty awesome way, but waiting a year and a half to find out how anything ties together isn’t something we want to do with our future stories.” ~Colin Johanson

Features: What are you able to tell us about the new features coming in March?
”Right now, absolutely nothing! It’s worth noting, we’ve never said the features we’re bundling together will release in March as well, only that they will be released together after the first living world season has completed. Between china beta testing and the large amount of work we’re doing to better pace the progression and teaching of the game based on those tests, completing our current living world story arc, the big projects we’ve been working on in the background (shh!), and all the features in production we’ve got a lot on our plate currently. We don’t want to list any specific features or timing until we get closer to that point where we’re more sure of exactly what players will see. Once the current living world season is completed, we’ll do a “state of the game” update summarizing the major features under production for the big feature release, as well as where we’re headed beyond that feature release.“ ~Colin Johanson

Races: What about Dwarves as a playable race?
”Well they would have to be stone dwarves, since as far as we know all dwarves were turned into stone!….As far as we know, there are so few of them left alive in the world of Tyria after the battle against the minions of Primordus, there wouldn’t be enough to make a playable race. Poor Ogden is likely very lonely, make sure to visit him and give him a hug! That doesn’t rule them out from being a possibility many many years down the road, but there are a lot of races we’d like to pursue first.” ~Colin Johanson

Achievements: Are you going to change the Map Completion to remove the requirement of WvW?
”We currently have no plans to do this. We’ve been doing a lot of work lately to try and bring our three core game types: PvP, WvW, and PvE more together in their systems of progression, rewards, and unlocking to try and give the game more of a sense of everything you do ties back into the growth of your character. We feel like WvW is a really good middle-ground between PvE and PvP and want to encourage people to think of the mists as part of our world they should explore and experience, we might consider adding the PvP lobby to world exploration for future characters for example to help give more incentive to visit there as well.

That being said, we’re always looking at the systems and features we have in place, and as you’ve seen since we launched if we find something we think is better, we’re not shy about replacing a current system if we find something better for the players, but accomplishes our same goals. Our over-all goal is to encourage all players to experience WvW, to have goals that keep them there long enough they might fall in love with it and take that on as a separate game time; should we find other ways that are as effective as we’ve seen world complete is for encouraging play there to see the different maps, that is just as easy to understand and uses existing systems like world complete, we’ll certainly consider them. It’s something fun to brainstorm on our forums and see what kind of ideas players might!” ~Colin Johanson

WvW: We feel like WvW season 1 rewards were really disappointing. I am not talking about being rewarded with gold or great powerful items in-game but I feel like the work on finishers and titles could have been better. Is that a problem you consider relevant on your side?
”We’ve taken a hard look at all the rewards for season one and we feel like we’ve learned a great deal about how we can do a better job of providing rewards for the next season of WvW after reading the player feedback, and discussing our own experiences as players through season 1.” ~Devon Carver

WvW: Are there any upcoming changes or additions to WvW in 2014 that you can share with us at this time?
“We are really excited about the upcoming “Edge of the Mists” map which we are currently testing with selected guilds. There are a number of things in that map that we are looking forward to possibly using in WvW in the future. We are also getting ready to move WXP to be an account based system. There are more plans on the horizon that are not at a point where we are ready to discuss them to help address some of the core remaining concerns with WvW our player base has raised. That being said our current collaborative development threads on our forums in the WvW section are a great place to help give feedback and shape where these new features will go in the future!” ~Devon Carver

PvP: How do you feel the upcoming PvP changes (gold rewards, removing glory, etc) will contribute to making the game mode more fun and rewarding?
”The short term changes we are making are in large part to bring PvP closer to the rest of the game. Players have told us that when they enter into PvP they are essentially putting all of their game wide goals on hold while they do it. What we are doing now is telling players that they don’t have to do that anymore. So there is the direct impact of PvP contributing to a player’s individual goals of reaching level 80, levelling up an alt or saving up for that special weapon on the trading post.

The result so far has been a lot more players to play with and against in PvP and that is more fun for everyone. More players improve queue times, improved matchups via the ratings system and will give you more friends to meet.

We are also excited about our long term project of ladders and seasons because it will give players a chance to work their way up based on their skill and dedication. It will be fun to see players distinguish themselves from season to season and to know that each season is another opportunity to show that you are the best.” ~John Corpening

Fractals: Why did you feel that resetting everybody to fractal level 30 was the best course of action?
“We were changing the relative difficulties of those levels and really wanted to level the playing field and give everyone a fresh start. We know this devalued some of the work people did but we wanted everyone to have a common language as far as the progression in fractals and didn’t want confusion in terminology for example ’I’m a pre change level 50 fractal’. Now if someone says they are level 50 in fractals everyone understand what they did and what that progress means, this becomes very important as we increase the levels in fractals.” ~Isaiah Cartwright

PvE: Are there any plans to make condition builds more viable in PvE?
”Yes you should see some creatures targeted around weakness to condition in some of the early builds next year.” ~Isaiah Cartwright

Skill Balance ] Why is condition damage intentionally restricted?
”We don’t restriction condition damage in any intentional way there are limits to the number of stacks on a target and gadgets cannot be targeted with conditions both of these are more of a result of our tech. These are limitations that we often work around and we are always looking for more ways to make condition damage interesting across all game types.” ~Isaiah Cartwright

Why don’t you put in post breaks just like Anet did in the beta forum.

I think it’s important you read every post not just the summaries however thats so much, it’s almost impossible. By putting in post breaks you could make it more manageable.

I will be reading every post. I am aware where I left of and will be continuing from there. Not sure why you think I just read summaries.

We just wanted to respond to the image that has been data-mined from the Edge of the Mists testing branch.

This is a testing branch. We conduct internal experiments for various territories on our testing branches. This particular experiment is not being tested for the West.

As always, keep in mind that we test a lot more than we ship, so data-mining is no guarantee of anything. If we have announcements to make about future content, we’ll make them through the usual official channels.

All of those conversations and scenes in the post-release camp were done entirely by our writing team this time around. A couple of us on the content design side were able to sit down with them and actually teach them how to do basic spawning and scripting, and with that base of knowledge they were able to populate the camp with all those interesting characters, which I think of as a huge win for the studio. It’s not that we’ve not had the capability in the past, it’s just that those kind of things usually end up low on the list of priorities for those of us who do the bulk of the content authoring, because although it’s really not hard to do, it’s also usually not that intense in terms of setup and scripting. When you are faced with the decision to fix a half dozen Pri.1 and Pri2 bugs or implement an NPC with conversation, the former will always take priority. So I would like to think that this is just the tip of the iceberg and that the bar will continue to be raised on content like this.

Matthew, Leif, and Theo, Witter, and others have been kind enough to devote some of their free cycles toward training the writers on scene and conversation scripting. Because of this partnership, we’re beginning to improve our methods of in-game storytelling. Expect more of these kinds of moments in the future.

Yes, I expect ultimately we would allow guild leaders to obtain guild representation and other basic guild activity of their members.

Regarding the ‘Eve’ approach to API keys: we instead are going with the OAuth2 approach, in which it is up to the 3rd party app to request required information permissions and the user may allow or deny these permissions en masse.

Honestly, it does not matter what topics are covered in the LW releases; if I cannot play through the content at my own pace, I will not play it at all. It is so frustrating to have my play timeframe constantly dictated by ANet. You folks put a lot of work into this stuff, I know, but my enjoyment of it is completely spoiled by the stress of waiting for the carrot to be yanked away.

This is a common complaint, and one that we’re very aware of. We’re discussing a variety of ideas that will allow players more flexibility in experiencing the Living World content, but we’re not ready to announce the details since the designs aren’t finalized yet.

If I haven’t received either reward…is it worth submitting a ticket? I’m UK based, so I appreciate it is probably still active daytime/early evening over there, so happy to wait if need be.

Since we just tweaked the distribution details, could you please wait about, oh, 20 hours? I believe you will have your rewards in a matter of just a few hours, but waiting until Noon Pacific time tomorrow — that’s 8:00 PM your time — would be greatly appreciated, since we’ll then be responding to just a few edge cases and not those for whom there is no remaining issue (because the rewards are queued up and ready to go).

Are we going to get SAB returning shortly after?

Because lets be honest. This is the only living world update the majority of people enjoyed.

Actually, we have metrics on every LW release. While SAB was indeed successful in terms of participation, so were the other releases (Scarlet ones included). I understand that forum feedback can color perception on which releases were the most popular/best received/most enjoyed but opinions on this are largely anecdotal. Please keep that in mind.

Now to your question: will we see a return of SAB? That’s not for me to say, but if it were to come back, what would people like to see from it? Harder/easier content? New world? More/no Moto story?

Or would you like future LW releases to cover other topics? Share your thoughts, but please keep it constructive. Thanks.

I think there are some interesting points here. While I would say GW2 has a fantastic free market style economy, that’s incredibly efficient blah blah blah… It is valid to say, while the economy may be efficient, is a free market economy the best choice for an MMO? There isn’t anyone in the world qualified to give a definitive answer to the question. What I can say is that the free market design that GW2 uses is MUCH more effective than a barter system in keeping players engaged and happy as an aggregate. No system will ever please everyone, but this system works very well from my point of view as a designer and economist and as a person who wants to play a great game, and the statistics that I have access to agree with that.

Please note I don’t mean to imply that other systems aren’t or can’t be effective, I only mean to say that I think the system we have is very well executed and is itself effective.

I’m in the same boat. Got the backpack, but no Mr. Sparkles. Submitted a ticket with all of the information I had on the gem purchases/card redemptions and crossing my fingers. And toes… I’d cross my eyes as well, but that gives me a headache. ;-)

Same here. I bought the gems on DEC 31st, but seems the order was only registered at 01.01.14. I’m at GMT -2, PST -8, waiting for my support ticket to be answered…

If you happen to have a moment, what was the cutoff time for the gem store purchases to qualify for the gifts? I purchased 1,600 gems on 12/2 (and got the backpack in the mail today). And purchased 8,000 gems for belated gifts to friends and such on 12/31, but didn’t get the mini in the mail with my backpack. The scoop on Reddit is that the mini and the backpack should have arrived in the same mail.

My 12/31 purchases were between 9-9:30pm PST (i.e. after reset). I’m concerned that my 12/31 purchases didn’t qualify because they were after 0:00 UTC. And it appears some other folks on Reddit may be in the same boat.

Please read the article I linked. I don’t know anything other than that about the eligibility times of the promotion, sorry!

Hmmm, it appears from the blog announcement that the eligibility time should have been based on PST, not UTC…

In early January, you will receive your gift based on gems you purchase and gem codes you redeem between 12:01 AM December 1 and 11:59 PM December 31 PST.

Ah. Yeah, I knew about the gift for purchasing something during December…but the wording of the email was confusing. I thought it to be a replacement for a lost item..maybe for some other player and GW2 support sent it to the wrong person.

First, thanks for reporting — it is helpful to know of players concerns, even if it turns out to be a known issue.

Second, the message was confusing and we apologize. I sense that waiting to get changes made to the distribution mail would have delayed the delivery, so the devs weighed distributing now with the existing messaging versus waiting to create new messaging, which is a longer project than it may seem.

Judging from the happiness of those who are getting their rewards, coming down on the side of “distribute now” seems a good thing!

:’( Does this include gems bought with gold? If so I dont believe it, I bought like 3000 gems I think towards the end of december, and if I remembered about this I would have got the full 4000. Oh Mr Sparkles you were so close.

Right, as you said, the rewards were given for Gem Store purchases. Buying gems with gold that the game gave you isn’t the same thing as making a purchase in the store. Thanks for understanding.

I’m just amused that it’s called a “replacement”. Why not just call it an “Appreciation” or “Thank you” gift for purchasing gems?

Would it help if, after the fact, I say we most definitely do appreciate and thank you? Nah, I understand was you are saying and yes, the in-game messaging wasn’t quite as informative as it could have been.

  • Adding new content to the existing maps (or re-using existing moments) that serves the purpose of being a bit like skill challenges, content on demand that allows you to overcome challenges to allow you unlock various abilities/masteries.

A bit like skill challenges, but while skill challenges are just “boss” fights, it would be cool if this kind of content generated entire chains of events with some more gameplay diversity and an interesting scenario behind them.

A lot of the ideas boiled down into variations of one of these two options, and really both have a lot of cool concepts and ideas. Can folks think of anything else that’s a bit more outside the box for something bigger?

Remember GW1’s Hall of Monuments, where the winning team got a game-wide chat message announcing their victory? Using that as an inspiration, but thinking of something completely different (without involving pvp), what about some content being unlocked at the end of epic dynamic events, and rewarding access to unique content?

But hey, this already happens with some mini-dungeons, don’t they? Maybe this concept could be expanded upon.

CONCEPT FOR OPEN-WORLD MINI-SCENARIOS

The teams that would complete specific and long challenging dynamic event chains would unlock access to unique mini-dungeons, with some interesting stories, scenarios and challenges behind them, all leading to a mini-story conclusion and a flavored reward to those players. The reward could be anything, including a new subclass tier, or mastery, or something.

Unlocking an open-world mini-dungeon would be map-wide, a message would automatically be generated in the chat warning players about it, and everyone could join and get the “normal reward”, but only the teams that have participated in the specific events that lead to them (and have met a specific condition) would be allowed to get the unique “mastery” reward, and a ray of light would shine upon them for all other players to see. Another message would automatically be generated in the map, this time announcing the players who have advanced through a mastery, and all other players in the map would be like “wow, how did you get your name in the chat? What did you do to get that mastery? I want to get it too!”

The dynamic events leading to those unique open-world scenarios (let’s call it that) would work as discussed: they would either start automatically from time to time, or start on demand if the player has met a specific condition. However, even though they could be started on demand, they wouldn’t be easy, with a high chance of failure for the unprepared, making them more special.

And finally, for a player to meet the specific condition to start those events on demand (and thus to get the “unique” reward from the end of the mini-scenario later unlocked) could be received from the also-discussed Orders quest system, or something.

There you have it, I proposed a new idea (mini-dungeons/ scenarios unlocked from events) and fused this concept with the two other ideas the community has been discussing (unique on-demand events and orders quests).

Very cool, something we’ve discussed a lot internally as well in regards to some of our concepts of what future maps would look like

Hey folks. Today is the day! We’ll be sending out the Black Lion Wintersday Rewards Event items over the next several hours. If you don’t have yours yet, hold tight, because it will take about half a day to send out all the distribution mails. The rewards include a Green Quaggan Backpack Cover and, for some, a mini Mr. Sparkles as well! Please note:

  • The distribution message in your in-game mailbox may be a bit confusing, because it refers to “replacement items” instead of calling out that the items are actually the Wintersday rewards.
  • These items are account bound and can be claimed by any character on your account and moved between characters through your storage. Naturally, if you add the backpack cover to a soulbound item, the resulting item will be soulbound, as well.
  • You need to have space in your mailbox, so clear that mailbox and keep it well below 10 mails so you get your goodies!
  • If you have not received your items by Thursday at Noon, Pacific time, please contact Customer Support by clicking “Support” at the top of this page, and then creating a ticket through the “Submit a request” link in the upper right of that page.
