The problem with GW2's writing...

in Lore

Antara.3189

I have a good amount of thoughts on this matter but I will share what one of the writers said a few years back on how they intended to deliver the plots of Living World. I couldn’t find the quote, but Randulf actually commented on a thread regarding this discussion. He probably remembers the quote.

“Think of the Living Story as similiar to how Game of Thrones is written.” (something along those lines.)

They intended to deliver suspenseful twists and surprises that were to keep the player guessing during each episode. Unfortunately (in my opinion), this never delivered like they intended due to plot holes, retcon, and stories being driven in all sorts of directions.

This should be taken as hearsay, but if my memory serves me correctly, the first living stories were evolving as they were being written/developed. They had an intended focus, but there was never a set in stone direction.

Lastly (again take this as hearsay), ArenaNet thoroughly encouraged staff to theorize their own ideas on where to take stories, lore, etc. I believe this led to many different directions happening at once with no clear direction on where to take the overarching story.

This was a few years back and I don’t follow the development process and seldom play (2 episodes back). I’d imagine Mike has changed things up a bit since then.

Happy Gaming,
Dan

Kessex Hills-Will the map progress?

Good Afternoon.

Will Kessex Hills ever progress into time since the destruction from Scarlet and the Krait? Similiar to Lions Arch, I believe the areas effected should be cleaned of her destruction and the area returned to its former glory.

Norn height GW1 vs GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Antara.3189

Antara.3189

Well the height of the Norn doesn’t actually seem to have changed much.

I’ve put together a side-by-side height comparison between GW1 and GW2.

In both I have my minimum height human characters standing next to a Norn. The GW2 Norn is a max-height character, and the GW1 Norn is Olaf Olafson. (The GW2 Norn player happened to be named Olaf as well, :P )

I tried to get the resolution about the same, but the resolution isn’t really the important part. What’s important is the ratio of height between the Norns and the humans. Olaf has some poofy hair so I drew his line slightly below the top of his hair. Even if I hadn’t, the size of the Norn seems pretty steady throughout the 250 years.

Off topic, but the level of detail in the hair is astonishing in GW1 compared to GW2.

Drok The Great

There was a time GW2 was Casual Friendly

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Antara.3189

Antara.3189

I believe Guild Wars 2 can support all three sides of the fan base (Casual, Middle, Hardcore).

ArenaNet could be open in regards to what type of content is coming; say hardcore (raid, large coordinated events), or casual (open world pve, events that don’t require much coordination, etc.).

Uncertainty in the type of content being released is an issue. HoT was not concise in what type of content would be available.

I’d like to see releases that focus on one or the other, in rotation. With explicit communication on what the next release’s core audience will be. I see nothing wrong with having to wait for the type of content I enjoy playing. My issue, is the lack of direction on what the content will be delivering until it’s live.

Personally, if a particular content isn’t appeasing to me, I simply skip over it. I just purchased HoT, and there has not been any coordinated groups achieving the map events. This has been disappointing, but I hope the next expansion will have less event chain driven maps, with more open world that can be done with smaller groups or solo (like the core maps).

TL;DR – Raids, and large scale coordinated events are good, but not as the sole content delivery. Don’t see the issue in having both, casual and hardcore types of gameplay.

P.S., I want to add that the 2016 Blog on the year to come is a huge step in the right direction. There should be no secret on where the lead developers want to take the game, and what content is expected to come; while also concise in the fact that directions can change, but this is their goal. In reference, I believe Zenimax Online Studios (ZOS) does an overall great job at achieving this. No team is perfect, but baselines and goals help tremendously.

Standard Models for PVE - Please !

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Antara.3189

Antara.3189

Hi All,

Okay this request is simple – allow standard models to be available in PVE as a option.

I know this may seem like why on earth do this?
1) Jumping Puzzles – eg wintersday : I don’t want my entire view to be filled up by some giant charr with wings. If everyone was a tiny asuran my life would be much easier. This would also help in the uncategorised fractal which is mainly a JP.
2) dungeons/fractals – ever missed a boss tell due to some big boned norn filling your screen with those big black wings?
3) Raids – Hugh characters again make it hard to see everything which is going on – it’s pretty easy to miss the vale guardians stabby skill with some big characters in your way.

Anyways – let me know what you think.
PS- Asuran master race rulez.

Thanks

  1. Start the Guild Wars 2 Application (GW2.exe).
  2. Log into your account.
  3. Press “Play”.
  4. Press “F11” or Navigate to the button that states “Options”.
  5. Once in the Options menu, navigate to the “Graphics Tab”.
  6. Under the “Advanced Settings” section, you will find the “Character Model Quality” setting.
  7. Select the drop down menu and select “Low or Lowest”.

Alternatively, you can change the setting by doing the following:

  1. Log into the Guild Wars 2 Application.
  2. Press “Play”
  3. Select the Character of your choice.
  4. Once you are logged in and in the game, follow Instruction “4” from the first procedure I provided.
  5. Enjoy the standard character model in Guild Wars 2.

Hey there, GW2 Forum Lurker here,

As my forum history would affirm my next opinion; I expected GW2 to take the core feel and design of GW1 (not the case), while expanding on the combat (which ArenaNet definitely did). The social aspect that GW1 held (in my opinion), is superior to GW2. I made more friends in GW1 than any other online game. I belive this is because all areas besides outposts were instanced areas. Being in a mission, vanquishing, or dungeon delving in GW1 with strangers usually ended with a new friend. The social aspect felt natural and not forced, as with GW2 people are just intelligent NPCs that are running around.

TL;DR GW2 did not meet my expectations of merging GW1 aspects.

Cheese Builds poisoning GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Antara.3189

Antara.3189

If a “build” is effective, then players are going to run that build or a variant thereof majority of the time. Why shouldn’t they?

Most of the time these builds that are considered standard have been thought out to achieve a maximum return in damage with high sustainability.

I prefer making my own builds but most likely it’s not as efficient as these builds that have been perfected by many players. It’s all in how you want to play.

I only play PvP now and I have no problem playing any professions with my condition ranger or my axe warrior. Countering and positioning go a long way in GW2.

In case anyone was wondering, the word “Cheese” was used 42 times on this thread.

PSA: Courtyard Rule Changes

in PvP

Posted by: Antara.3189

Antara.3189

As some of you may have found by now, we’re shifting the rules for Courtyard a bit in hopes it improves the playing experience.

We’ve changed respawn time to 5 seconds, and the total time limit to 8 minutes.

Please let me know if that makes the map more competitive.

Also, as a reminder, this map, along with Skyhammer and Spirit Watch, will not be available during the beta ladder in ranked arena. These maps will still be available in unranked arena.

With a five second re-spawn, I believe this will only increase the gap between the two teams, especially amongst the solo-que players.

If there are five seconds between each re-spawn and the opposing team kills each player within 10 second intervals, the team will now be spread thin and the opposing team will now have 5 vs. 1 or 2.

Currently if the team dies >10 apart they will be able to regroup quickly, though it hasn’t historically improved the odds the team making a comeback.

I believe the 5 second re-spawn should only be in place if the 8 minutes is not a true value since the outcome of a match on Courtyard is generally determined fairly quickly.

Without proper synergy and team composition on this map, it’s quickly lopsided.

I find it mind boggling people can complain about getting rewarded for logging in. Its like they are saying “Anet please reward me less and stop trying to get players to log in everyday.”

excerpts from Konigs post

I don’t think either of you are getting the actual points being made.

I would rather have enjoyable replayability than “give me something for doing nothing” which is what the log-in reward is, a reward for not really doing anything.

I’m not saying “reward me less” and I don’t think the others are either.

I’m saying “don’t try to spoonfeed me rewards just to boost your statistics” (or alternatively, “I want to be rewarded for doing something, not nothing.”).

This is exactly what I’m saying. I don’t want to be rewarded for clicking a login button. The harder I worked for an item, the more enthusiastic I am when I have that item.

But they don’t enjoy the time it took. That’s the problem. One of the biggest complaints AP hunters had was that it took forever to get all 10 AP for the assorted dailies. They felt pressured into doing it and they couldn’t “play how they wanted to.”

Now anet has changed that, and some of them still aren’t happy.

And they never will? /shrug

I could have used this change yesterday. I was short on time (because shammy-leveling elsewhere), so a quick in-and-out would’ve been happy.

Yeah I know, but I still have to poke at them. It’s in the fine print

Win? I don’t think they are out to win or lose. They are out to make money, which they are making lots of.

I personally disagree with the notion to reward players for logging in. This is the only game where I feel more unique by looking like a new player versus gear that would be considered “end game” or “elite”.

This game hands out more items than any I’ve played. I already throw away countless items.

No wonder players feel entitled, they are fed everything at a nonstop rate.

Personally I love the feeling when I earned something I worked hard for.

Good news is, I also love to give away free items. More to give away now.

Expansion wont satisfy me

(unless devs add 1 new continent twice the size of Tyria,10 more well designed dungeons with all their dungeon sets and weapons,17 more fractals,2 real dragon bosses,at least 2 more playable races,4 more classes,11 new weapon types and 30 more weapon combos,Submarines and ships,Guild Hall instance,GvG Arena with ladders and stuff,Mounts and ability to freely fly around,5 more different in design WvW maps and WvW Events,10 more sPvP maps and PvP modes…and so on)

So your argument is… you won’t be happy with an expansion… unless it is actually an expansion… well that is sort of a given isn’kitten

Your list is essentially a WoW expansion… the fact that you think it is some absurd hyperbole just goes to show how little content we have gotten so far…

The list i’ve gathered is created from the posts on this forum and various social media and gaming websites – it sums up what people are looking to see inside the upcoming expansion. (maybe with bit less proportions but yet the content is same)

My personal list is way different trust me :>

Let me say this. When the game released I was largely happy with all the content (besides the end of the Personal Story and the fight with Zhaitan.)

I had no quarrels with the leveling experience, the trait system, the trading post, WvW, dungeons, or the different worlds.

Instead of building on to all of these, a lot of the systems the game shipped with have been drastically changed, removed, or just stopped completely.

Frankly, I don’t find Living Story interesting. The story is drawn out with many dropped plots.

Here we are over two years into the life of the game with only one of the six dragons slain. Something that I was under the impression to be the main plot to Guild Wars 2 (hence the dragon in the logo.) I figured we would see much more of the six dragons within two years, paving way for new un-adventured areas and plots. I had optimism that I would see the ravages of Palawa Joko in Elona, the new order of the merged Luxon and Kurzicks. I thought all the old plots would be revealed to pave way for new uncharted territory.

Instead, we are just now looking to slay a 2nd dragon. It’s just not ‘mouth watering’ when it’s long and drawn out.

Not sure what else to say.

Expansion wont satisfy me

Wrong. I will be completely satisfied if the expansion provides me with the following content (quality content):

  1. A comprehensive story line that I can complete start to finish at my own pace.
  2. New end game armors and weapons that are not Gem Store accessible.
  3. Dungeons.
  4. New skills and weapons.
  5. New PvP game mode types.
  6. Guild improvements with the addition of Guild Halls and Alliances.
  7. Additional WvW Maps and improvements.

This was provided to you past year by current living story and latest sPvP update.
Your expectations are fulfilled already than…so enjoy i guess :>
No need for an expansion what so ever.

Again Luna, you’re wrong to say it won’t satisfy me.

The ‘Living Story’ did provide some of the aforementioned. However, it did not bring the enjoyment that older ‘expansion’ content has brought in the past. Of course I’m only speaking for myself here.

I could go and break out why each portion of the living story that I didn’t find enjoyable and then compare to an expansion and why I find that enjoyable.

But just to note; I’m specifically talking about the type of content I find enjoyable, not the speed in which it’s released. Whether it’s in an expansion or released in updates I find irrelevant.

I like free-will content. Not content that is driven in one direction. I want a map I can explore, do quests here or there, find a dungeon, etc.

TL;DR
An expansion will satisfy me if it brings the same type of content I’ve seen in their previous series. Noone can tell me otherwise.

For me, it’s relatively simple.

If I’m satisfied with the product, I will happily purchase additional items for the product (Gem Store). If I’m not satisfied with what I’m getting, then I will not purchase anything.

In the past year I have not been satisified with majority of the content or direction, so I have stopped purchasing gems. This eventually led to distaste for the game, thus I have stopped playing.

However, I hope to see the game re-attract me so I can once again support the franchise.

  1. Boxed expansions are able to reach out to gamers who have not yet heard or tried GW2 yet. Living world doesn’t do this.
  2. Boxed expansions generally provide more than just a story line that the player completes in a day. It contains enough content to provide players the same amount of excitement as the original release of the game.
  3. Boxed expansions generally include content that can be enjoyed throughout the life of the game, even after the initial rush has passed. End game areas that provide unique high end gear or items that can only be achieved in that area, exclusive mini games, etc.
  4. Boxed expansions generally include a new set of features not seen in previous versions of the game, such as races, professions, weapons, skills, etc. Living world can do this, but historically has only provided a handful of skills in a lengthy amount of time. A boxed expansion generally provides most if not all of the aforementioned at one time, bringing a new refreshment to the game.
  5. In a boxed expansion lore can be expanded and re-focused to areas not yet seen, or bring closure to open-ended questions brought up by the previous versions of the game.
  6. In a boxed expansion players can enjoy the story line at any time they purchase the expansion. They don’t have to log in to unlock the content in case they want to enjoy it later. If they don’t do this; currently the content that has passed has to be purchased. With some of the released being no more than 20 minutes worth of content, this is not appealing to new players who have missed the past content. Not to mention the difficulty in following the story line of the living world unless actively keeping up to date with the releases.

In closing, boxed expansions can expand the progression of the world and the game in a much broader sense in a shorter amount of time. It also provides more than one path to take; meaning you can enjoy another area of the game while other players explore another path of story/map/race/etc.

Discredit boxed expansions all you want, but there are many of us who prefer that type of release versus the current living world.

Precursors drop everywhere. This is bad.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The issue is actually deeper than just the drop table for precursers.

There is more incentive to do the world bosses on timers, than work together in a group to complete dungeons. It should be the other way around. Lack of rewarding items and length dilutes dungeons into being extra content that is done for completion titles/AP, or small group of farmers who enjoy the minute rewards received.

World events have become the laziest example of ‘group content’, and rewards players better more efficiently than other end game content.

Why does any of this matter to a player? Is this really that important of an issue to be preached over an over?

If ArenaNet feels they need to share the factual statistics regarding activity, units purchased, etc., then they will. To try and theorize activity based on any 3rd party account is purely speculation. It’s really that simple.

Furthermore, battling over which game has more activity is plain malarkey. X game has more people than Y game because of Z. Y game sucks. Let’s work to provide criticism or applause on game-play issues, rather than irrelevant statistics.

Does any of this effect game mechanics or the lore? Is the game less enjoyable simply because x amount of people dislike the game? What sense does that even make?

There are plenty of issues and concerns that could be addressed, but this isn’t one of them, I can assure you.

You’re saying it matters to no players? That there are no players interested in how the game is doing? I find that really hard to believe.

YOU may not be interested, in which case, there’s probably no reason to post in this thread. None at all.

Players of MMOs are notoriously interested in how many people are playing it. You see this question all the time on Reddit. I want to start the game but I want to make sure that there are still people playing.

No one wants to play a dead MMO. So yeah, it’s interesting to players.

And yes, the evidence is pretty compelling, even if specific individuals don’t want to see it. In fact, some of them could just be trolling.

We’ve been told by Anet that some people who claim not to play the game, regularly log in.

Please don’t construe my words. ( I never stated that “no players care”.)

The fact of the matter is this is a multimillion unit selling MMO that is only a little over two years old, with an active fan base. Unless player activeness is directly effecting game-play regularly, then it’s irrelevant.

I can understand if players express concerns about activeness if they are having trouble completing an event that requires x amount of players, but are not able to fill the requirement. That being said, there are tools provided (LFG Tool, Guilds, Map Chat), that are designed to help a player fulfill a party or requirement. If a player is still unable to fulfill the requirement, then concern should exist on the aforementioned.

To conclude,

Fluctuation exists in all healthy populated MMOs; which is a given. A population decline to the point of effecting game-play should be a concern and properly noted. However, ArenaNet has the ability and personnel to tackles issues such as these and handles them as they see fit and when/if the case arises.

Hopefully we can all get back to providing feedback on game design issues now.

Speaking for myself here,

I am not entirely happy with Guild Wars 2, for several reasons. The biggest reason for me was the direction to move away from the Guild Wars 1 motto. Guild Wars 2 started off with solid mechanics (for the most part), and I figured the game was only expand into another great collection of games.

The lack of build versatility was a huge letdown for me. Not being able to create “off the wall builds”, and utilizing a second professions skillset.

Another huge disappointment for me was the direction of the story. The current story of Guild Wars 2 has become controversial in plots, scenes, and other obscurities. Of course every player has their own taste in story. The story has seem to include “real-world” issues that removed that sense of “fantasy” for me, thus becoming a negative all together. The issue with ret-conning very large history facts from the Guild Wars 1 series really put the story to rest for me. I could ramble about this for awhile.

Gear Acquisition is another failing point for me. When I log into Guild Wars 2, every player is bright with colors and has armor that brings no context to the world around them. Everyone is so different that they look the same. I value no player in this game because I have no clue how to view them. Did they work hard to earn their gear, did they buy armor from the Gem Store? is the armor respected? All things lost in Guild Wars 2 for me.

In conclusion,

The game has become to spent on becoming “fair” or “equal” with no real challenge or plot worth becoming enriched in.

Super Adventure Box [merged]

ArenaNet,

In the recent light of the interview nulling the continuation (or put on hold) of the Super Adventure Box, many players have expressed great disgust with the comments in the interview.

This is a message to suggest that SAB be continued either as a addition to the GW2 Game, or as a Stand-Alone for the pleasure of the players who support SAB.

It appears that SAB was a success with many players (myself not included), meaning that it would make sense to have a small team, or developer continue this mini series.

I also understand the statement that affirms a priority in “Game Continuation”, not only with Living World, but with the Game World in general. To say the least, this game has progressed very slowly in terms of ‘new’ content (I’m not talking about base game mechanics here.) New skills have been lacking, the Precurser Build-Chain, etc.

That does not take away from the fact that SAB was a hit amongst many players.

Please take this is a message from a concerned player.

If only they had stuck with what they knew, kept to the roots of the original Guild Wars Franchise.

They looked to far and too wide and are now lost in the timeless space of the Eternal Alchemy.

I should had warned them not to look. First Ceara (Scarlet), and now ArenaNet. Shame…

Is it fair?

Game of Thrones Comparison

My basketball playing is comparable to Michael Jordans,

yeah in my own fantasy world.

I still laugh when this game is compared to Game of Thrones. I think they have two things going for them in that comparison:

  1. Fantasy World
  2. Factions..

The story of the living world isn’t even in the same solar system of GoT. Just no.

LOL you guys.

What does it matter about which game is better? Is it really that big of a deal? I know you want to represent and stand beside the game you enjoy the most but give it a break.

Since this is a GW2 forum, of course other games are going to get bashed but that doesn’t make them right.

At the same time some of you say ESO is generic, cheap, lame, whatever else you want to label it, people on the other side say the same thing. So what?

It really is apples and oranges. GW2=F2P Rated Teen
ESO= Sub Rated Mature
Both entirely different settings and styles.

As far as the cost of a sub? It ranges from .44 cents to .50 cents a day. Being a “lead-foot” on the gas pedal of a vehicle costs more a day in gas, or a cup of coffee, or a candy bar for that matter.

Quality content sells, regardless of how the cost is presented, whether F2P or Sub.

Just for the record. Unless someone here has direct sales and game population data, then it’s just subjective to say the game has gained or lost population.

I for one don’t play anymore, but with the 50percent discount, newcomers are sure to arrive.

One MMO coming out, or two, isn’t going to solely kill GW2 population.

What will however, is poorly designed content or lack of content in general (i.e, new zones.) GW2 will either die the testament of old age, or suffer the hammer from corporate decisions or poor content before losing to another MMO.

(To the person regarding ESO voice over: For any large MMORPG to VO every quest is a feat in any book, and what lacks in GW2 quests by far. Some of the VO in ESO has been astounding to say the least, but its subjective regardless. If GW2 used VO like Taimi and Rytlock more often in their quests, it would bring a better immersion experience, but meh.)

Everything in OP’s post are things that are really wrong with the game, and yet every post here is kissing anets kitten.

People generally play games because they like them. I really don’t understand why it would be surprising for someone to prefer the current state of the game they play, to ideas rather more reminiscent of other MMOs, which they perhaps do not play.

People do play games the like, but that doesn’t stop them from playing imperfect games. Theres plenty wrong with GW2, but not enough to stop me from playing.

GW2 is far from perfect, maybe even far from good… the problem is in the sea of crap that is MMO’s right now, GW2 manages somehow to be the best. Which is disturbing because for almost a year and a half now the game has been uncontested, and they almost have nothing to show for it post launch. And now when a real competitor shows up all they can scrounge together is a cheap QoL patch on the same day as its release.

What’s good is subjective to each person, but statistically speaking they are not the best, and really the only thing they have to boast about is their “Fastest selling MMO” which is nothing more than the extreme hype that backed the release (I was definitely part of the hype train).

I would think this game needs something fresh, a few new areas to explore, a series of new skills, new armor sets (not gem store driven), or even a few new actual dungeons that didn’t stay for a month at the most. But maybe that’s what the fanbase here considers “typical” and thus likes the temporary content and gem store items.

My summary of my experience with GW2 is as follows:

  1. Exciting, fun start with levels 1-20, but after becomes a repetitive cycle of hearts, and meta events that mirror the last zone. The story started strong but became stale.
  2. With no class roles, the grouping became “Highest DPS, stacking to ensure fast kills” and eventually became mindless.
  3. WvW started off fantastic, but was soon changed indefintely with the tactic of “Stack, buff, charge” and eventually became a repetitive motion to “zerg/blob” with no long term goals or rewards, and PPT having no effect without max coverage.
  4. PvP had great potential, but lack of game types and rewards soon felt like playing “Team Death Match” on a FPS over and over.
  5. World Bosses quickly lost any challege and/or value, either standing and spamming default skills, or requiring massive participation and coordination to complete, with miminal rewards if completed.
  6. Fractals was a great addition, but simply became wore out, and the “Beserker only” taking control of high level runs.
  7. Living story? I played the entirety of season one and never felt “attached” to any of the characters or progression of the story. Lack of moving cutscenes and lore connection created a poor immersion for me.
  8. Waypoints and “Central hub” really destroys any sense of exploration. The amount of waypoints in GW2 are so extensive questing became “Fast kill then move [Waypoint Here] for next boss.” If not that, I found myself not being able to do a quest chain do to lack of players.

In summary,

The game’s not terrible, but the overall course and direction has been meek to say the least and has not lived up the hype that was created.

I’m still curious to see how or what direction this game goes, but the amount of time and actual money I spent for bank tabs, inventory slots, material upgrades, did not equal out for me. I’ve no longer played since March and have no intention on returning. And before you ask, everything was already given away.

I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as you make it out to be. People have expressed discomfort with the kiss scene, and to some extend, I can understand, or try to understand their feelings.

Calling it a lifestyle however, is outside reality. It’s incorrect. Homosexuality is a form of love, not a lifestyle.

And lets please not drag the Westboro Baptist Church into this. Those people express hatred on a level that is unparalleled, and is not reflected in this thread at all. Lets not overreact please.

Also, I understand that when I come into a discussion such as this one, that I can expect opposing opinions. No one is forcing me to post in this thread. If I don’t like the discussion, I don’t have to be here, and neither do you.

I want to note though, in some cases, “homosexuality” can be seen as lust, and not love. I’ve known a few females who enjoyed intimacy with other females, but did not “love” them.

I think it’s both love and lust, just depending on who the person is.

Rytlock, Eir, Evon. I like those characters, not into Marjory of Kasmeer though.

I did like Taimi though. She is unique.

Braham seems too “squishy” to be a true male norn. But that’s just my opinion. And Rox just looks strange…

Just to add, I also like Caithe and the Faolin mix. Those were thought out and executed well imo.

I think my favorite female would probably be Countess Anise though. She’s mysterious, serious, and not sure how she will react. Cool character all round
