I took over a year off the game and blah blah blah megaservers blah blah blah temples…

So, where does everyone get their shards, now? All the other merchants I’m familiar with (read: merchants that were in the game 1+ years ago) were a total ripoff, so I’m reluctant to spend ridiculous amounts of fractal relics or laurels on them. But since it seems temples all but deserted, where does everyone get theirs?

Can someone explain end game to me?

Ummmmm… There is literally nothing to do at end game other than grind.

You either grind dungeon tokens for dungeon gear, grind gold/mats for craftable/tradable gear, or grind WvW kills for WvW gear. Then you grind dailies, monthlies, and Fractals for Ascended gear. And if you’re extremely masochistic, you grind EVERYTHING to get Legendary/Ascended weapons.

And once you’re done with that, you grind Living Story for skins. Woooooo!!!

I have no idea how this game gets the stigma of being less grindy. The only thing I can think of is because there’s really no purpose to grinding, so people call it less grindy. To me, not having a purpose to the grind is way worse than grinding for a purpose.

Very little today is truly random. Computer simulations are also not random, but enough random that we can consider them so.

People like OP see a slight change and freak out, not realizing that 5 of something is too small of a sample when the population is infinite.

There’s no denying a small population is inadequate to properly gauge the average, I agree. And my responses weren’t an attempt to validate his conclusion, either. It was simply to invalidate those who are so easily willing to dismiss the idea that loot tables constantly change. I’ve created dynamic models for loot tables which measure inventory and adjust on a BiC scale, so it doesn’t even require manual intervention.

Might Stacking Question

in Elementalist

Dresden.1736

Definitely at the beginning of the fight, not before it. Firstly, because you can’t use your Earth Evasive Arcana blast finisher if you’re not in combat, robbing yourself of 3 more stacks, and second, because a lot of those skills do some very good damage.

If you’re getting all 18 stacks the S/D setup allows, the last blast finisher to go off will be your Churning Earth. You’ve already gained 15 stacks of might by that point, so when churning earth goes off, that’s an extra 525 power and condition damage added to the skill and its bleeding.

All in all, if you’re not doing it in combat, you’re robbing yourself and your team of 100k+ damage in one run of combos. (assuming 20k total damage in skills x5 mobs)

Dresden.1736

How is this a glitch?

Please don’t false advertise.

On a more constructive note, was there anything unusual about your encounter before this event occurred? For example: Did a member enter, pull agro and run out of agro range of the NPC’s in question.

How is it not a glitch? Please don’t make stupid assertions. And for the record, this was posted on the TA board, and a mod moved it here.

The Dungeon was impassable because the mobs stopped spawning. The mobs are supposed to infinitely spawn as killing them is the only way to unlock the last boss. The fact they stopped spawning is the glitch and the fact it was then impassible makes it game-breaking. It’s really quite plain. Apparently you haven’t bothered with the new dungeon yet, which makes me wonder why you would even attempt to speak on it before trying to belittle the problem.

You enter the final boss’s chamber, and there are 6 or 8 power generators you have to destroy. The only way to destroy them is by luring the infinitely spawning mobs to the location of a generator and kill the mobs. The mobs explode on death and take out the generator. Without the mobs, there is no way to progress. Once you enter the room, there is no way to disengage as the door locks behind you and there’s no way out besides party wipe.

I’ve played the path several times, and party wiping is extremely common on that part. Been in groups have have wiped 10+ times trying to get it done. This last run, however, we wiped once and it glitched.

Well, sometimes it’s really easy to QA on a small scale but once it reaches full scale, it becomes open to more bugs as sometimes they couldn’t have tested it. Just take the food buff in the Dragon Ball arena for example. They didn’t think of it. It’s only in full scale that they noticed their mistake.

You CAN’T have a game be full bug-proof. You can QA to reduce the amount of bugs, but it’s pretty impossible for a MMO (not talking about single player games) to not have bugs on Day 1. Though they are quick to fix important bugs.

It is this kind of complacency and excuse making which perpetuates these bugs. This is not status-quo. Several major MMOs have development servers where players are invited to join and test new content prior to production rollout. There, players report the bad glitches and exploits and developers patch them out before it goes live. It is a tried and true QA process which is extremely effective and efficient. Even at my own place of work we use a UAT environment specifically for that purpose.

It’s not possible to make content completely bug. People need to report bugs so Anet can try to fix it. With a better description of exactly what your party did to cause the bug.

There is no reason to be mad about a bug.

I’m a developer, and I completely disagree. Yes, all software has bugs, but you are a failure if your software reaches production and there is an app-breaking bug in it. I couldn’t care less about some of the invisible clipping issues that dungeon has, or some of the poor AI pathing, etc… But I have a problem when I can’t complete the content because of it.

We literally died, waypointed, and re-entered the room. If we were blinking through walls, or sword-leaping over obstacles I can understand, but playing normally should never cause you to not complete the content. Period.

So, I ran the dungeon with my guild last night and it was going pretty smooth. Got to the room with the last boss in a relatively short amount of time. We’re doing the generator event where the floor gets electrified, and the whole party wipes, which isn’t a concern or surprise. Except, when we make our trek back into the room, none of the mobs would spawn, so there was no way to complete the rest of the event.

We tried everything to get the mobs to spawn. Wiped ourselves again, left and came back, checked every nook and cranny, but nothing worked. We even sat there for a full 5mins+ killing one of the generators manually to see if that might spawn the mobs, but to no avail.

These kinds of bugs have no place in production. Where’s the QA in this game? It ended up being a waste of over an hour before we finally gave up and exited completely.

Anyone else run into this bug yet?

Condition Catastrophe

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dresden.1736

Dresden.1736

First, let me clarify for everyone how broken the system is. The Conditions are capped at a max of 25. That’s not 25 of each, that’s just a flat, cumulative 25.

Now that we’ve clarified that, don’t believe the garbage about technical limitations within the bandwidth. As an app developer, that’s their biggest load of horse **** since the “play your way” lie was coined.

The game is already sending and receiving condition information to and from the client – you can clearly see this when you are attacking a champ with a zerg and see all the conditions stacking up (even though most aren’t even applying). The data is already flowing, so bandwidth has nothing to do with it.

The issue lies in the incompetency of the developers. DoT is an age old mechanic, and no other MMO has failed so miserably in its implementation as GW2 does. The developers at GW2 just haven’t figured out the model of how to properly calculate consistent DoT in larger numbers. I would sooner believe it was an issue with CPU resources before I believed it was bandwidth limitations, but the system isn’t even that complicated, either; it’s type, intensity, duration, and stack. With a cap on 25 per type (the way it’s supposed to be), and only accounting for the top 25 highest intensity/duration, only a fraction of the input will even be processed as the DoT builds will take precedence over low DoT input. So, in a Zerg, a very small amount of condition data will even need to be processed.

They need to fix this, and it needs to be at the top of their list. It is an utter joke it has even gone on this long.

Condition builds are useless in new content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dresden.1736

Dresden.1736

What people don’t realize is that conditions applied to mobs are capped at 25 total stacks, not 25 of each type. That means even though a Wold Boss might be showing 25 stacks of Confusion, Bleed, Vulnerability, etc… only 25 total of those are even being applied.

ANet claims it is due to bandwidth limitations, but that’s complete BS. It comes down to lack of foresight and poor design. Other MMOs managed to pull off conditions just fine, and defending a poor design is a slap in the face to people who enjoy the condition meta.

For this reason, I will never roll a condition build, even if they are still viable in one small aspect of the game (PvP).

Incinerator, and Rodgort footfall change

Yeah I’m just a little surprised that there hasn’t been any announcements addressing the changes to Incinerator that were supposed to happen. I just wanna know if there was meant to be any changes and anet forgot about it or something.

Definitely was supposed to happen according to the patch notes:

Changes to Legendary Weapons

  • Legendary weapons now have increased stats to keep them in line with the new ascended weapons as “best in slot” items.
  • Legendary weapons now have functionality to allow their inherent stat combo to be changed to any other stat combo when out of combat.
  • The Bifrost: Updated the effects and texture to be more detailed and vibrant, enlarged the footfall effects, and added a new projectile.
  • Adjusted the position of the golden arrow on Kudzu and updated the effects on the Kudzu projectile.
  • Meteorlogicus: Updated the texture, effects, and animations; added a day/night cycle for the effects; and added a new footfall effect.
  • Frostfang now has larger, more impressive footfall effects.
  • The Juggernaut, Bolt, Incinerator, and Rodgort now have larger footfall effects.
  • Quip now has more impressive footfall effects.
  • Updated the texture and effects on The Moot.
  • Updated the effects on The Minstrel to be larger, more impressive, and more frequent.
  • Updated the pommel on Eternity and added a unique footfall effect.
  • Added a new footfall effect to The Dreamer.
  • Added a new projectile to Frenzy.
  • Added a new skill effect to Howler.
  • Updated the effects and texture on Kraitkin.

Incinerator, and Rodgort footfall change

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dresden.1736

There was definitely no change to the Incinerator. Before the patch, I compared footfalls with a friend who has Twilight, and his are about three times larger than mine. We made the same comparison afterward, and they are exactly the same. The definitely screwed up that portion of the update.

Footfalls aside, they really need to bring ALL legendary effects up to par with things like The Dreamer. They clearly spent more time designing effects on The Dreamer than all the other legendaries combined, and not only is that disconcerting for the rest of us, but also a little pathetic.

What is Arenanet's Policy on Exploiting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dresden.1736

Dresden.1736

I don’t think any developer has the right to ban people for using mechanics in the game, even if the developer didn’t intend for those mechanics to be used in that manner. If something exists which they didn’t intend, that is a failure on the developer and its QA staff, not on the player who is only using in-game functions. The only people who should suffer consequences for such things are the staff members.

I play several MMOs, and several of them have Beta servers where they release major content changes a month before rollout so these kinds of things can be identified and removed prior to hitting production servers. Players get a chance to test out new changes and usually have vast quantities of currency to allow them to experiment freely, and the devs get free and much better QA.

That said, they have every right to patch out unintended functionality as quickly as they want to, and should if it is adversely impacting other people’s experience, but they should never punish players for their own faults.

I say try this: jump on one foot, yell KAWABAKAWA 3 times, do a 360 turn and toss salt behind, then click on MF.

You have no idea how loot computations work if you think devs rely solely on a RNG to determine what outputs. There are more factors than just a random number. This much should have been abundantly clear with the fact a Diminishing Returns system exists. And as we all know, taking time off is the only sure-fire way to kick DR off your account, so his question was perfectly sound.

The MF was only a small feature of Celestial so they won’t do that.

It drive me up the wall when people say something stupid like this. When given the choice of going with Explorer’s vs. Celestial, people chose Celestial because it has just as much MF as explorer’s does. It isn’t a small feature – in fact, the MF is high enough for it to be a PRIMARY stat.

That aside, Celestial is created for the sum of its parts. When you take away a core component, it diminishes its value, and that is the wrong way to approach it.

People got celestial because they felt having all stats was beneficial in some way. They didn’t do it for the MF. If they wanted MF then they would’ve gone for MF specific gear.

The MF on Celestial is equal to MF gear like Explorer’s, so if they wanted MF, Celestial was clearly the superior choice.

That aside people got Celestial for the sum of its parts, including the MF bonus. If it didn’t have it, you can be sure a large population of the people who went for it never would have. Stop making kittenumptions.

(4) +50 to Precision
(5) +75 to Vitality

Will karma consumables go away on the 3rd?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dresden.1736

Dresden.1736

No, and I am tired of reiterating this point but here we go.

Karma consumables were introduced earlier in the year when daily and monthly achievements began to give tangible rewards. This was because people were having a tough time getting the substantial amount of karma that they needed to buy elements necessary to the creation of legendary weapons. The effect that boosters had on the karma consumables WAS AN UNINTENDED SIDE EFFECT of the way the gain was handled. Since Anet is giving an inherent 50% boost to the consumables at the same time that they are removing this function from the game, I can hardly sympathize with anyone kvetching about the update or caterwauling about how the karma consumables are pointless without the boosters.

Welcome to my topic. I invite you to actually read it!

Win-win.

Agreed…

How does that change that they just gave us celestial armor, only to nerf if 1 month later, and it takes a month to make a full set. Longer if you have 2 weapons.

The point is that none of the other armors are losing stats. Every single one of them are having stats replaced. Litterally their magic find is being (can be) replaced by power, precision or toughness.

Celestial is just losing stats!

Why? Is the current stats too OP? Would giving them one of the other secondary stats be too OP? would increasing the stats by 1 each be too OP?

Anyone with half a brain would agree that celestial isn’t OP, even in the very few instances where it is actually somewhat viable to a build. The issue is that there are a bunch of whiners who, regardless of the impact, would pretend that it is and throw a tantrum over it. As far as they are concerned, if they can’t burst you for you for 80% of your health bar and then finish you up within 3 seconds, your build is OP and requires nerfing. They aren’t afraid of your 2400 atk power, believe me.

I am sorry you had a bad experience in your former job. Here our developers actually talk to us and give us information we need. So what I am posting here is coming straight from the people working on the changes.

Look man, I know how it is. I’m not just some ignorant user has hasn’t been in your shoes before. You’re playing operator, and I know how things get lost in the chain of communication. I had friends in the development teams, and even the information I got straight from them isn’t how it played out in the end. Your directors and producers have the end-say over what is going to ultimately happen, even if the community and development teams disagree or think otherwise (believe me, I’ve been there too many times). I moved on to Kixeye before becoming a developer, myself, and it was hardly any different, there. I hope you’re not honestly trying to pretend that you’ve got all the answers before the community officially had the chance to even ask the questions…

There are far too many inconsistencies, here, to believe the information you’re disseminating is 100% accurate. I mean no offense what-so-ever, but the fact that infusions will still retain their effect and that ascended accessories can’t be swapped to “craftable stats” remains a glaring contradiction.

But I believe that you believe you are communicating it correctly, so I’ll just leave it at that and hope you are wrong on some of these things.
