I want to thank again Dash for leading this fantastic project.

More importantly, and as a few said before, we need to counter the perception that editing the wiki is difficult. You should not be afraid to contribute, the same way that you should be ashamed that you do not all the things involved in the wiki or be afraid that someone would react to your edits. The wiki truly is a collaborative website where everyone has its say and role. Some editors take care of removing typos and correcting English, some focus on the formatting, others go deeper into the code. And the bulk of the editors simply add information, and then other editors adapt, format and sometimes correct it. You also don’t need to spend a lot of time (although the wiki community would love to have you ), for example we’ve introduced a new “Leave Article Feedback” tab where you can just leave the information as is, so that other editors can use it!

Guess the offer is only for the english wiki?!

Can I ask what language wiki you’re from, if you don’t mind?

Much too complex.

I was under the impression the ‘Leave Feedback’ tab was introduced to make it easier for those unschooled in the more complex aspects of Wiki editing. Hopefully, we won’t be discouraged from using it.

Absolutely not, you should continue to use the Leave Feedback feature if you’re already using it. I’ve heard that it brings a good amount of information to the English wiki and it’s valuable. That being said, Dash’s project is his own and manages it as he sees fit.

Hi Eluveitie.1290,

First of all, I’m sorry that this happened to you. Unfortunately, as some players have said, there’s nothing we can do to help with this in-game situation.

However, “we” can change the wording that is used on the wiki and that it seems led you to believe something that is not accurate. This way we’ll remove room for interpretation and hopefully avoid anyone else ending up in this situation.

I used “we” between brackets above because the content of the wiki is entirely created by players that volunteer their time to this amazing task (they’re called “editors”). There are several ways for these changes to happen:

  • you could directly modify the pages to clarify the confusing parts by yourself: click on the “edit” button at the top of the article; I’d advise to create a wiki account first but you can still edit without it and will then be identified by your IP address on the wiki
  • if an editor is reading this thread, maybe they’ll do this change
  • we can share this information with the community of wiki editors: click on the link “leave article feedback” at the top of the article, share the information in the textbox and click the “Save” button when you’re done; this feedback may be read by editors who can then decide what changes are needed (if any) and how to format these changes.

I’d suggest to you or anyone in this thread who would contribute to the wiki on that particular topic, you should look in the direction of all the other legendaries, in case similar wording is used. You can click at the bottom of the Frostfang article the “Legendary weapons” link to see the corresponding category: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Category:Legendary_weapons

It’s also probably worth looking at the article about Legendary Weapons, because clarifying the wording could benefit a lot of players: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Legendary_weapon

Thanks.

WvW Invitational Statement from John Corpening, game director for World vs. World

Hi, I’m posting today the transcript of the statement that John Corpening, game director for World vs. World, made last week at the beginning of the World vs. World Desert Borderlands Invitational. Enjoy!

Hello, my name is John Corpening. I’m the game director for World vs. World in Guild Wars 2.

World vs. World as it is today is an amazing experience where hundreds of players are constantly engaged in epic battles for control of towers, keeps, castles and more. Where players can use an array of siege weaponry to break into their enemy’s holdings or keep the invaders at bay. But, despite being a leader in large team open world battle games and one of the most popular parts of Guild Wars 2, there are some areas that we can improve.

Shortly after I took over the World vs. World team I implemented the Adopt-A-Dev program for our team to investigate fully the state of World vs. World.
World vs. World is probably the largest and most complex aspect of Guild Wars 2 with very different experiences for players across its many tiers, with different play styles, group sizes and motivations.

Many of our developers are dedicated WvW players but for this event they got out of their comfort zones of the worlds, guilds and friends they knew to fight side by side with other players on different worlds, make new friends and see how other guilds operate.

During this time, I conducted several discussions on our public forums about a number of issues related to World vs. World. From this we determined that we needed to focus on a number of core issues.

Our goal is great matches and our core pillars in support of this goal are Strategy, Competition, Collaboration, and rewarding the contributions of both players and guilds who participate in the daring adventures and epic battles that make up a great match. While we do strongly believe World vs. World goes far in giving players this experience we recognize that there are areas that can be made better.

The biggest is population imbalance. The current team structure has led to a number of issues such as low population in some worlds while overpopulation on a few worlds gives them queues on many nights of the week.

We’ve seen a concentration of talent as hardcore players from most worlds have migrated upwards through the tiers looking for new experiences and greater challenge. Because this talent tends to be concentrated at the top, MMR has correctly kept the most dedicated teams locked in near perpetual stand off against the same opponents week after week.

Hand in hand with population imbalance is scoring. The current scoring structure allows scores to run away, a problem that is compounded with night capping where it is possible for a team who has recruited players from different time zones to conquer everything in off-hours leading to one side getting ahead while most players are asleep or at work. Comebacks are difficult and it is hard to make up for that lost time that you spend on your real life needs.

Another area we want to improve is how players are recognized and rewarded for their contributions to their team. Whether you defend, scout, run havoc, zerg bust, roam, conquer or win team fights you should be fairly compensated from the game and not rely on the hope that your team may kick you back some gold at the end of the night for you to feel rewarded for the valuable effort you put into the success of your world.
We want to bring back tournaments and we want to bring them back in the form of seasons where everyone knows well in advance when the next tournament is coming. But until these issues are resolved we don’t want to see players taking days off work or staying up all night expending a huge effort during a time when these issues stand out the most.

After Adopt-A-Dev we spent some time discussing and debating the results. Even though a good portion of the team was already dedicated to working on World vs. World content and features for Heart of Thorns, we assigned people to start tackling these problems and more.

But World vs. World is huge and complex and so is the technology behind it. We’re continuing to work now on developing and building our solutions to the core issues I outlined above, and once we reach a point in development where we are far enough along with them, we look forward to sharing those plans with you. As work on Heart of Thorns wraps up, we’ll be treating resolving the remaining core areas in WvW as our #1 live development feature priority for the game to ensure we deliver on making World vs. World not just the great experience it is today – but the incredible experience we know it can be. As this effort ramps up you will be hearing more from us about the work in progress.

An example of this work in progress is the recent change to how world populations are determined. Going forward worlds will be marked as full or not based on actual World vs. World participation rather than accounting for every player in the game.

While we’re working on more solutions for the areas I have outlined, we’re excited about the updates Heart of Thorns will be bringing to World vs. World as well!
We are eager to see the strategic play that develops from the Desert Borderlands with its new mechanics, unique objectives, astounding beauty and layout that both supports team fights in some areas while breaking up blobs in other areas.
We look forward to putting a greater emphasis on holding objectives through auto-upgrades and on guilds through the guild claiming system, a system that gives players new ways to play the game and tools to defeat their opponents.

We hope you enjoy the live stream of our second stress test coming up next and we will see you on the battlefield.

Thank You.

New wiki feature and interaction: Leave article feedback (beta)

… To someone who’s knowledgeable with the Guild Wars 2 wiki …

If you target ease-of-use for someone unfamiliar with wiki editing, feedback UI should look more natural. E.g. like a text entry box at the bottom of the page, just like a reply on the forum pages.

As they say, perfect is the enemy of good. In other words, we’re trying here to make progress one step at a time, rather than spend a lot of time implementing the best solution we can come up with. Please keep sharing ideas if you have them, as this project is still in its infancy and it could use everyone’s help.

Seems a little pointless and counter-intuitive to the nature of a wiki you can add to yourself. Can the article discussion pages not fulfil a feedback role?

You’re both right and wrong here, it all depends on context. To someone who’s knowledgeable with the Guild Wars 2 wiki and its community/procedures/policies, it looks like an obvious thing to do (and technically this tool is little more than posting in the article’s talkpage). Yet no one apart from the active editors is doing that.

To everyone else, it is different though. Over the past few years, I’ve discussed with various people (both part of the wiki community and outside of it) the possible reasons why more people aren’t editing the wiki. There’s definitely a big chunk of players who are not interested in doing that, and that’s perfectly fine.

But I’ve discovered that there’s a group of players in-between these and the editors. They’re either lapsed editors, who stopped editing for various reasons (issues with other editors and with policies, loss of interest, etc.), or players who are willing to help but afraid to do so (could be because of the technical bits, or being afraid to do something wrong).

So this idea (and credit to Rubi for having it!) is a slightly different way to add information to the wiki by simply “dumping” the information onto it and let the active editors take care of the rest. We’re hoping that it’s going to help both those who want to contribute and the active editors, and even hopeful that it will make the former become the later

Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in this project and for being an extended part of the Guild Wars 2 wiki! A big thanks too to the active editors, without whom this wiki would not be what it is today, serving the greater good

Hello everyone,

I’d like to announce here a new feature that the community of the Guild Wars 2 wiki implemented. If you look at the tabs above any article on the wiki, you’ll now find a new one: Leave article feedback (see picture enclosed). If you browse an article of the wiki and realize that it has a piece of information missing, you can click this tab, fill in the text box with the information and just click the “Save page” button. This will leave a message that wiki editors can check and then add the information wherever is appropriate (they’ll also take care of formatting it and adding any relevant links).

We’re experimenting with this feature, so please leave feedback about it in this thread. Although there’s a vibrant community of wiki editors, they could always use a hand and we’ve noticed in the past some players saying they were afraid of trying to edit the wiki, or simply not knowledgeable enough. So we’re hoping that it’ll give Guild Wars 2 players more opportunities to interact with the wiki and, possibly, become an editor!

If you’d like to share the information on this thread, please feel free to do so too! Post a link to the article and the information that’s missing, and one of the editors of the wiki will hopefully add it.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi there,

Reaper in French can be translated in many ways The French-speaking members at ArenaNet and NCSOFT went through a few discussions about which translation was more appropriate, but it was complicated by certain factors (e.g., terms that were already used). You can read a bit more about that on the French forums here: https://forum-fr.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/loc/Le-nom-des-sp-cialisations-d-lite-de-HoT/first#post254154

Hi,

It has come to our attention that there exists a way to duplicate Golems in WvW. The team is currently working on a fix. Until that fix is ready, we are turning off the ability to use Golem blueprints. Because there currently exists a number of duplicated Golems, Golem skills are also being disabled.

Please note that enabling a Guild Golem will consume the upgrade, but you won’t be able to use it.

Thank you for your patience as we work to address this issue.

I’d love to be able to get some more robust, read-only information like “name of player currently selected”, or “weapons currently equipped” etc, which would allow us developers to take that information and use resources like the GW2 API to query against and provide some cool responses/useful information to the client side user to. Am I missing something with Overwolf?

Hi docMed, Stéphane (not Stéphanie here! Overwolf is offering you an SDK to develop things on top of Guild Wars 2, while the Guild Wars 2 API will offer you mean to create content that’s relevant to the game. Some of the information you mention maybe something that’s more relevant to the newly-released Authenticated APIs ? Take a look at previous contests and Overwolf GW2 apps for ideas about how some developers have made this work (note that not all apps use the GW2 API).

Im happy to see you start such an awesome initiative, but could we, for the mac client, have something for us too? at least push over wolf team to build a compatible app? Or more important , some of the featured apps for over wolf should and can be implemented directly on the gw2 client , i fear that the second of nice feature like boss timer are available from over wolf , we poor users of the mac (beta) client will never see it implemented in to the game for us too.
in the end , I’m positive on this kind of initiative , but really hope that some of the basic feature could be implemented for all the player base and not just half of it, I’m i wrong?
sorry if bothered someone , not in my intention :P

Hello AndRec, I suggest you ask Overwolf directly, as we’re not managing that program. Thanks for your feedback

uh oh… I don’t think our guild will meet those request. lol sorry John

Let me be more precise: we (obviously) would not want to use any part of the video where there’s swearing and if there is too much we’d probably not use anyway. For the rest, we’ll judge the footage for its merits.

OK, so I have some footage of Hugh running around with CERN last reset (not much). Here’s the catch. You seem to be asking for the actual video file and no music. It is a confusing request. Are you asking for the raw video file or the edited and rendered video file that I upload to YouTube? The raw files are unedited and include an audio track. That means it would be up to you guys to strip that out when you edit the footage. A rendered video file means some quality is lost but I can strip out the music/audio for you.

Which file do you really want?

I’m asking “no music” because WvW players usually add copyrighted music to their video and we would never use that footage. So whatever file has the game footage plus any additional content that is “relevant” (e.g. TeamSpeak) is acceptable. Obviously raw footage is ok, rendered video is acceptable if it contains bits we can reuse (so they’d have to have devs, not have copyrighted material or swearing, etc.).

Technical quality is important but if your additions enhance the video we may consider them. It has to look professional, so no flurry of video effects etc. We’ll be watching the footage for “interesting bits” to resuse anyway, so I hope this provide some guidance.

They’re also asking for no swearing in mapchat. I highly suspect they’re asking for a rendered video file. Which leads to another question: which render settings do they want the files in? I can strip the audio out and cover up the chat box. The render settings I use for YouTube though produce a lower quality product than if I just re-render at a higher quality and upload that to Google Drive.

Covering the chat box is probably not a bad idea but it’s something we’ll be able to do if needed Higher quality footage is preferable.

Thanks all for considering to help us!

Hi everyone,

We’re working on a cool project related to the Adopt-A-Dev program and we need your help! No, it has nothing to do with killing devs or Dolyaks We’d like your Adopt-A-Dev video footage, if you have any!

We’re looking for high quality footage of any guild that adopted an ArenaNet dev, the requirements are:

  • HD quality; we need the actual video file, no link to YouTube please; the ideal way for you to share this with us is probably a hosting service such as Google Docs for example;
  • It needs a dev, or even more than one! If we can hear you talk about him, see him with or without his ArenaNet tag, it’s acceptable
  • Please no swearing (if there’s TeamSpeak or map chat), no music and clean game footage
  • Please send links to the video file(s) at community@arena.net with the title “WvW Adopt-A-Dev footage” as soon as possible and at the latest on Sunday please
  • If you could also include timestamps in your video when there are interesting bits, it would be fantastic!
  • Last, your informal approval for us to use the footage (we may get more formal at some point).

Thanks a lot for your help with this, and have fun in the mists!

Hi everyone!
I just purchased GW2 today and i’m currently waiting on the DL to finish. I’m quite new to GW so i don’t know a whole lot about what’s going on.
I was just wondering if anyone has any insight on which server(s) are most populated/best.

Thanks!

Hi grrizzant,

First, welcome to Guild Wars 2. As said above, the choice of your world (which is the name we use for what players sometimes call “servers”) will mainly be important if you’re going to play World vs. World. In the “main world” you’ll be grouped with other players in what’s called a “megaserver”, so that a lot of players on the same map can play together. You can learn more about this in this article: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/

Have fun in Tyria!

I remember from the old tradingpost that there were top traded/most expensive/etc lists.

Our API dev tells me that that data was never accurate or timely, and that you’d be better off aggregating everything using the /v2/commerce/listings API and determining this for yourselves.

Are the result from,

https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/commerce/exchange/gems?quantity=100

live values (same values we can see in game) and not a delayed value like from GW2Spidy?

They are live values (with 60 seconds of caching) for all APIs except the /v2/commerce/prices one, which is cached for about 5 minutes.

Hi there,

As a follow-up to Colin’s post, we want you to know that we’re busy working on fixing bugs in the New Player Experience system. We’re also using this opportunity to make a few changes to its design to take into account the feedback we’ve been reading. We’re aiming to deploy the fixes early next week.

As Colin explained (make sure to read this post and that one if you haven’t!), this is a complex, “big picture” system that has a lot of components. We want it to benefit all players and improve your game experience overall.

We understand that this is an important topic for the community and appreciate that players have been talking about it. We’ve been triaging bug reports, developing fixes for them and discussing what design changes we will bring to you next week. We’ll continue to both work on the next updates and read the feedback from the community on this topic!

Thank you

i wish they send emails or notices like they did with the living story of season 1 for season 2!

We’re still planning to send emails notifying players about the releases, closer to the dates, but we usually only do that very close to the release.

This IS insulting.

Hi everyone,

I’m going to paraphrase Colin on this topic. The decision to implement the New Player Experiment system came from tens of thousands of usability testers and interviews with players who tried Gw2 and left leading up to China launch both in NA/EU and in China. It came as a surprise to us but it was an important for us to acknowledge that a number of systems, downed included, were difficult to understand for many players.

For the downed, system we tried a downed tutorial, building downed into the level 1 tutorial and other ideas. After usability testing with numerous different groups, we found that the best rate of people learning and understanding it came from having it be layered complexity and the solution we went with above. Intuitively that wouldn’t have been my guess either initially, but we found people understood it better this way than all other options we tried.

This same level of testing led to the other changes as well. At the end of the day the biggest take away is that all of us (including a lot of people on the forums) probably know games (and Guild Wars 2) really really well. We have millions of users, and a tiny percentage of them frequent game forums. Just because all of us learned those systems well and thought it was all really easy doesn’t mean we are the norm.

I hope this helps everyone here understand that this was a decision to improve the game for many people. Thanks for your understanding

Hi,

Just a quick clarification about the initial video: this is a preview of the September 2014 Feature Pack collection and it shows rewards that are unique to the collection feature, but they’re not precursors. These rewards are the named exotics that drop from Champion loot bags.
