as a thief, i was thinking about swapping to ranger for the traps and rune of the trapper. trapping is so much fun, and its BA in wvw for tower defense, i think ima just stay thief though, traps are fun on thief, just not nearly as good, or you’re right, no bonuses from stealth. my thief, with trapper runes, has plenty of survivability… theres no doubt that trapper ranger is more fun than trapper thief though.

haha this is a funny thread. I use caltrops in spvp to get people to move off point and to kill the freaking turret engies because they, EVEN IN DEATH, refuse to move off point. I never thought id catch a mesmer with this tactic though.

I am absolutely freaking out over this. How can they do this?

More than a year ago, in a lore discussion thread about Sohothin, i mentioned that Rytlock may be a candidate for Khan-Ur, if he is a descendant. And now it looks as if i may be right. Frankly, i am shocked.

ArenaNet, how can you once more trample onto GW1 lore in this way? How can you?

Sohothin does not belong into the hands of a Charr. I was waiting for a chance to take it away, by force if need be. But no, you turn that Charr into the one to lift the curse of Ascalon. Rytlock may be a candidate for Khan-Ur, but he is NOT the rightful heir to the kingdom of Ascalon. If anyone, that is Samuelsson. The human kingdom is gone, alright. But what you do here is justifying genocide and ecocide.

I was thinking that making the Charr into a playable race was for the sake of game balance, but now i see that it is obviously favouritism. You are going too far, ArenaNet. Enough is enough. You are favouring a race that caused a genocide of innocents and destroyed Ascalon completely. Many old GW1 players have not forgotten, and really do not like the Charr. I see now how much you care about those players, even less than i thought.

The ghosts deserve to be put to rest. The Charr do not deserve to be freed from a curse they caused by their actions. But that is just my opinion.

Treat your GW1 lore with more respect. Do not let a Charr casually lift the curse during a living story update like this. You could have made a great story out of it, one that stands on its own. You just casually throw it into an update whose focus is something completely different from the whole Ascalon story.

Recently you said that you do respect the lore of GW1, but now i see that you really don’t. And that you really do not care one bit about GW1 players. And yes, if what the trailer shows is really going to happen then i am done with this game.

You do know the humans conquered the charr first… right? The charr just wanted what was rightfully theirs…. Not their fault Aderlburn went crazy and killed everyone. He should have just died like everyone else was supposed to

Yea sure a random proc that fears you for 5 seconds has counter play?? Am I supposed to waste my dodges whenever I engage a necro even if his not attacking me?

I never get over people hyperbolizing fear durations. Reaper’s protection is a 2 second proc.

I saw in another thread a guy said he was fear chain spammed for 10 seconds. Which it caps at 5 seconds.

Also corrupt boon already misses a lot. If you give it an animation it’ll need a cooldown or efficacy buff.

Its not 2 seconds with the trait that increases fear duration. And if the necro has nightmare runes then its even more than 5 sec fear.

Tell me, how can a 2 second fear, which obeys the +100% duration cap that ALL CONDITIONS HAVE, get to be 5 seconds?

You want to avoid that fear? Pop stability before CCing the necro, or don’t bother using a hard CC. There’s nothing unpredictable about it, outside of not knowing at first if the necro has that trait or not.

And random dodging corrupt boon is not counter play.

Believe it or not, not loading yourself up with boons and making yourself a juicy steak for corruption-packing necros is indeed counterplay. Or is popping several boons not something that you can control (and thus the same passive stuff you claim so much to hate)? Or, you know, cleansing afterward.

Fighting a necro is not skill based. Its about stacking condis clears, random dodging and CCing him to death. Its not fun for the necro and the player who fights them.

And completely untrue. You can easily fight a necro with only one total cleanse or a couple of 3-condi cleanses. You don’t need to stack everything you have available, contrary to popular belief.

long time condi thief here. i actually never get yelled at in game. i use 2/0/2/4/6 with withdraw, roll for init, bp, and shadow step, though. so i think people dont yell at me cus im a bit more in their face, and less in stealth. when i do stealth i do it simply to pop sneak attack.

Hey all, mostly making this post for conversation! I run a 2/0/2/4/6 p/d full dire build, and with all my wvw stacks and corruption… and food, i have 2.4k condi dmg.

Now i used to run full apothecary, and i could still kill people with only 1.3k condi dmg…

Essemtially after going through almost all condi rune sets, im wondering if they are worth it? I tried the krait ones, scavenger ( for a long time), undead which were nice, hell i had nightmare, balthazar, sunless, and grenth which deff was m fave, with that sigil of ice and some hydromancy, honestl so much chill!

The only condi set that looks decent to me that i have left to try is the CM set, which ‘might’ (lol) be nice! But otherwise im thinking about going back to traveler!

Anybody have any ideas for other runes to try out?

Necro uses deathshroud, (which is completely worthless to condition necros, and just shows how desperate the necro is, but as necros have no escape mechanisms, it’s all they can do) thief goes stealth, removes all conditions, heals to full, and for a reward, sneak attacks, reapplying all of his conditions.

While the rest of your post shows, that the necro you portrait just plays very poorly, the quoted part is just plain out wrong. On my condition necro I almost change into deathshroud on cool down, because it is one of the most amazing strongest tolls condition necros have.

Hey, just adding to this, unless a thief goes Shadow refuge, he is only going to lose 2 conditions from stealthing, a p/d thief isnt going to be spamming blackpowder hs combos, so he has cloack and dagger, last reffuge maybe, blinding powder, and instictuall response, all of which are giving him either 3 econds, or 4 seconds of …or maybe its 4 or 5 seconds depending how far hes traited into SA. So he is only losing 1 or 2 condtions, UNLESS he goes SR, which is so easy for a necro to fear him out of.. its actually rediculous that you didnt mention that. also, when a thief uses sneak attack, he only puts 5 stacks of bleed on you, he doesnt actually reapply every one of his conditions.

so as a full dire p/d thief, venoms are uneeded in a “chill immob build” … i run full runes of grenth, with sigil of ice and chill on my weps. my utilities are withdraw, roll for init, BP, SS, and basky venom. The weapon set alone has plenty of immob, and cripple, and with a 30% chance to cause chill on hit, with 25% chance to cause chill on getting hit, and chill at end of heal… youre plenty fine without icedrake venom. I have about 75% chill up time, which is plenty enough to make your opponent blow condi clears, and waste away to bleeds and confusion and torment and poison. plus in the end you also have 3 stun breaks and a condi clear under your belt… instead of 3 skills on a ridiculously high cooldown

As a thief, I like to imagine the best roamers are the people who can beat me, in a fair fight. And then i realize thief is best roamer.

Being a full time roamer i gave up on stealthing and running away. Because the person who runs away from a fight is the loser. So WITHOUT good ol SR the people who give me the most problems are… other thieves using SR.

I’d like to cast my vote for Shadow Refuge as the greatest roamer, because he has single handily lost me more fights then any other profession or skill in the game

As a long time condition thief, not a ferocity nerf p/d thief, I’d say my biggest hardship is zerker thieves XD. A good BS d/d thief can cut right through my dire gear, and if he is well placed and knows what he is doing he can melt me twice as fast as i can him.

Besides that i’d say i only have trobules when im fighting 2 decent players.

SA Required in WvW?

yeah i hate running SA. TO ME it encourages sloppy gameplay,“oh i took dmg, better go stealth and wait it out” and i dont mean that offensively, but when you go full SA you get a lot of wiggle room with the condi removal, blind, health per second stealth combo.

When you’re in wvw it is a good idea to pop 2 points into it AT LEAST for that condi removal on stealth. It’s not necessary, but if you’re not running a sword set it is pretty helpful. That’s my 2 cents

P/D Condition - Help me learn this?

Everything stated above is perfectly awesome for a beginner in p/d. Just a few things I’d like to add. First the 2/0/6/0/6 build with perplexity is a great place to start with p/d! It allows for a lot of mistakes, and lets you recover very well. however, a p/d build can be a lot more than that! if you play it long enough you’ll want to start experimenting with your own p/d playstyle, and even dropping the perplexity runes! Remember that this game allows for a lot of ‘build diversity’ and if you think you can find a better way to play p/d then go right ahead and do it!

The alst thing i’d like to add is have fun!! p/d gets a lot of flack, remember that the people who are going to be yelling at you are he people you totally just facerolled. It’s a strong set, and very hard to counter if the opponent doesn’t come prepared! At the end of the day it’s all about how you want to play and, even though some people will tell you otherwise, its a pretty fun set to play!

basic build
1,0,6,0,6 full dire set with 1 venum SR SS – -easymode
6,0,1,0,6 full dire set full venums – not so easy with no stunbreaks so only cnd to stealth but can down ppl in 3 seconds – fun/hard mode but not for 1v1 or big group play

i run 2/0/2/4/6, i moved from venoms to traps. the 2 in shadow arts is for the remove condi on CnD… but you’re right, the moment you stop relying on the stealth mechanic, p/d isn’t so easy, its a slow burn where you’re constantly active in the fight. if you run venoms, not so much a slow burn XD, but its still more active the moment you take 300hp a second in stealth out of the equation and remove SR from your utility bar.

Inherently "Human" Professions

Guardian and Mesmer. I personally feel Guardians are inherent to Dwayna and Mesmers to Lyssa.
Thieves represent the Ash Legion, so I wouln’t consider it inherently human.

Hey just a few things to touch on here. For starters the guardian in gw2 is supposed to be deity free. Essentially they are the most pro race profession out there. Through the centuries with more and more races working together the guardian formed! Picture a sunspear paragon, a canthan ritualist, and an ascalonion monk all sitting together around a fire. They share their skills and beliefs, and then share their SHARED beliefs with other races and after a hundred years the guardian was born!! Guardian became a symbol of protection, not worship. When you think guardian you should think unity, all the races and all ethnicity’s of tyria with a combined ideology of protecting one another.

Thieves, are actually pretty pro human too! They don’t “represent” ash legion, the ash legion is just prone to producing and acquiring thieves, in nature! Thief actually descended from the Canthan Assassin. In Cantha politics were pretty crazy, specifically the dragon empire (which was a human nation) lots of people hated one another, and because of this the assassin was born. Assassins specialized in killing one target with out making a mess. Assassins became a very prevalent profession in Cantha, often banding together and forming guilds to ensure equal pay! The guild wars 2 thief is the creation of these traditional swift killers spreading their techniques across the world! Thief definitely isn’t “pro human”, but its not a specific charr profession for sure.

in wvw i see exactly what you’re saying. you get revealed after one shot from stealth pistol. so the next 4 shots all hit for +200 power. Make a build Azure, lots of good p/d zerker builds!

25000 WvW Kills for 10 Achievement points

i just wanted to come here and say to all of you, 25k kills is a lot, and you should be proud of yourselves, even if the rewards aren’t as amazing as you hoped. I remember when i first saw this Achievement, i was very excited to begin my journey for ultimate dominator… however, i dont ever roam with zergs, and hardly any other people at that. here i am at 10k kills. proud of about half those, the other half were scrubs im sure of it.

Feedback regarding Conditions

Ikr. I play PvE only. I dont really know what the fuss is about in PvP, but i know im fully ingorant on the matter. Thats why i asked here how this idea would work out.

The problem with conditions is in my opion a mentally problem.

The first is the mentally around toughness vs vitality. Most people prefer toughness since it doesn’t devalue your healing. So they stack toughness for being more tanky but the problem with that is that conditions ignore toughness. So when they fight a condition user they fight with a stat less.

The second is the fact tha people play more cautious when they are on low health. They pop their invulnerability/blocks/… when they are losing but with conditions they are just preventing new conditions to be applied but old ones are still ticking and thus killing them.

The third one is a bit strange. A good defense against conditions is a good offense. Condition players need a longer fight, so if the fight is longer they are in a better position. When people are losing against a certain to seek better defenses but with condition you are just playing in their hand.

Last but not least is the best defense is condition removal, but knowing the right moment is very hard to do. The other defenses against like dodging/ blocking/… are less effective against condition due their smaller tells (which are neccessairy due to removal).

This are in my opinion why players have a problem with conditions.

never begin an argumentative essay with “in my opinion” it discredits all of your following support. You need to come off stronger, it isn’t your opinion, it is your stance. If you are going to tell everybody what the problem is. tell them, don’t tell them you think it is. Otherwise this was very well written.

Runes for my condi thief?

For startes, if a thief spams 3 for evade, kill him. just blatantly kill him. he is out of attacks, and his shortbow is out. secondly, that is one glassy thief is his 1 skill is killing all your clones. i bet you could out glass him if you were good at the game. third. one immobilize is getting you killed? this is clearly a l2p issue. looks like you got pwnt by a bad thief and now you are crying about it.

i run this build, accept with runes of the nightmare, withdraw, blinding powder, and scorpion wire… my traits in shadow arts are different too, i use the lower cooldown, instead of the initiative gain.. i also use throw feathers instead of long reach. all in all the build works fantastically. i just went a SLIGHTLY less cheesy route. to be honest i just enjoy the build….

Out of curiosity what would WvW fights look like if stealthed players moved half speed?

I have been playing a lot of stealth games lately and it seems the theme to them all is that stealth reduces movement. Could a slow moving mechanic attached to stealth make for better fights? Just asking.

GW 2’s invisibility is easily the most ridiculously overpowered stealth system of any PvP-game I’ve ever played.

Both statements 100% accurate.

I went on record over a year ago stating there was no way anet…or any developer, would let something as broken as stealth continue as is …without a fix.

Obviously I was wrong. After watching the twitch feed last week and one of the devs showing the new pvp map ..while he was on his thief. He went on and on how the map was going to be a blast for thiefs with their teleports.

I get it now.

Essentially what you wanted to do was talk about how you hate thieves and all of their class mechanics were broken! Simple reworks in your paragraph structure can fix this. If you PM me i would be glad to help you revise so your comment has more flavor, structure, and usefulness!

True be that good sir! I do always think about my condi damage, it is rather low, but i havent noticed it hurting me yet! Also i enjoy that breef weakness on poison trait! But i might consider dropping venoms and going 30 into trickery! lots of people do and i hear it works well (: so thanks! i’ll give it a shot tonight!

Try doing that in fractal.

in fractal(s) I would probably do the same thing, accept drop the 3 skill. too risky.515151515151515. And if i was against a boss id whip out my shortbow and 1 keeping my finger on 3 incase of aggro.

Hey this video is great! I have full apothecary trinkets, but was thinking about switching to the dire/ rabid ones… the amount of vitality you gained is too much to turn down!! I’ll probably be switching to those soon!

long time since i’ve posted about my build, but i finally managed to get full ascended and my wvw infusions, and this is what i’m running with! I mostly use it for small group fights or solo roaming! Pretty fun build, really. Lets you stay active, and the quick cool downs help keep the pace up! If i had fraps or anything I’d post a vid of me using it! In fact I might go get fraps, I’ve never gotten commentary on my game-play before, and that always helps!

Anyway feel free to comment on it and what not!

I’m hardcore into wvw roaming. ive even spent the past month making ascended armor so i could min max my stats and add wvw infusion to all of my trinkets, armor, and weapons for maximum build potential… and this is again just for solo wvw roaming… probably my favorite aspect of this game…
