You mean the thread about improving communication that got locked so more discussions could happen more organically?

Restrict forum access to active accounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

After all the critique which quite often involves people that have outright claimed that they haven’t played for months or even have the game installed I was thinking about the question in the title.

Would it be possible to only allow active accounts (such as having been logged on the last x days/week) to write on the forums? Everyone would still be able to read of course, but I have a feeling it might create a better environment for everyone here if you actually had to actively play the game in order to join in on the discussions.

As seen with the NPE change there were massive amounts of hatred posted, quite much of it from people that didn’t even try it before (either due to not wanting to start over or due to not actually playing anymore).

Any thoughts about this?

(Oh I know people will hate this thread, if only on principle because I created it, but thought it was worth a shot to see what people thought about it.)

Or maybe they can effectively moderate their forum using the appropriate channels that are currently set up. If someone is posting on the forum and you don’t want them posting here, there’s a simple solution, ANET: Banhammer ahoy! Using such a broad criteria as “hasn’t logged in since X date” is senseless and unnecessary.

Boss Blitz mechanics questions and rant

in Festival of the Four Winds

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

The turret is not passed on. That’s why uncoordinated zergs leave her for last. People just don’t listen or assume she passes on the turret.

For Boss Blitz, you have to look at the meaning of the wording: it’s supposed to be a blitz, where all bosses are fought together by smaller groups. Not this go from boss to boss crud that seems to be the only way people think they can do this. Boom Boom Baines is fine. The concept behind the event is that a smaller group face her as part of a larger zerg fighting everyone else simultaneously. When the whole map converges on her, her turret goes to level 84. When it stays level 80 it goes down fast and she doesn’t heal for 5 hours before it is finally destroyed. For all it’s faults and claims of poor design, it’s not ANet’s fault people can’t organize to do the event the way it should be and do their own “train” method of Boss Blitz.

It actually is ANet’s fault people can’t organize to do the event the way it should be done. Here’s why: They’ve done nothing to facilitate the organization required for this event. That is bad design.

It’s bad design that the UI doesn’t show the boss health bars. It’s bad design that there’s literally no way to moderate how many people can go to a boss. It’s bad design that we can’t form up in actual raiding groups. It’s bad design that map chat is the only tool we’ve been given.

This fight would be fun and plenty worthwhile as instanced content. But it is bad design, and the excuses you’re making for ANet is giving the impression that this sort of design philosophy is okay, when it really shouldn’t be. I’m usually really happy to look at an issue from both sides, but I am genuinely baffled that anyone can try to defend this event.

The little pastry shop down the street

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

I’m sure the management at the pastry shop enjoys their “loyal” customers telling other customers that if they don’t like it, there are plenty of other pastry shops to frequent instead.

Kitten, I hate condescending, preachy parables.

can I just point out that in this stupid contrived metaphor the pastries have never actually gotten any worse? Sure the owner create the shirts or whatever the hell your analogy is but the pastries remained of the same quality. The correct analogy would be that the owner started making new shirts but never made new pastries.

But i think the point here is not the discourage constructive criticism completely, but instead is talking about those who constantly want game changers and complain that gw2 is lame without them. Like open world pvp, mounts, etc. These are the squeeky wheels that I don’t want to be greased.

Those that provide constructive criticism like saying how the trait system could be improved or how wvw could be more fun are always welcome, and I don’t think you see huge arguments spawn off those threads.

You can actually say that the pastries didn’t get worse, and then talk about the trait system? How can you hold those two things in your head at the same time? Because my trait pastry has absolutely gotten worse. The first halloween had glorious pastries, but the second one was terrible. The infinite continue coin pastry is literally inedible. Town clothes? That pastry is just repackaged from the grocer down the street. All those people who worked for their Fractal pastries having them just taken away? That’s not good business.

Some pastries have gotten better. But to say nothing has gotten worse is laughable.

It looks like a really great and engaging system. There’s no way to be sure without experiencing it in-game, of course, but I am cautiously optimistic. It seems to be hitting the right notes, in my opinion.

I must confess to sharing Pookie’s point of view that this was something that was heavily promoted as something that would be part of the base game, and it does seem duplicitous to backtrack on that stance, now. It’s no surprise, given that it was announced two months ago as a feature of the expansion, but it is very disappointing.

Before anyone takes it upon themselves to chide me for having this opinion: I have no problem with the expansion as a whole. Yup. They’re a company, not a charity. That’s why my gemstore purchases have been real money in exchange for goods or services. I’m pretty bloody aware of how making money works, thank you very much. Guess what? Even charities need money to function. This is not an argument about if they need to make money. They clearly do. In fact, they deserve to make money. This is me saying that the choice to gate precursor crafting behind a paywall is not consistent with earlier statements and, as a paying customer, I do feel like it was dishonest.

I am so happy with the trait/build system’s current incarnation after two years of the disastrous second version. I would hate to see this system abandoned. I have some issues with balance, particularly pertaining to elite specs, but that has almost nothing at all to do with the way we access and unlock builds.

Im sorry, I dont visit these forums every single day to make sure I keep up on every topic. Ad Nausem for you, new to me.

It is called SEARCH – pretty easy to use actually.

ANET, when do we get a forum-user block feature? Will it be before or after the search function is fixed?

How exactly would that work? The post is hidden from your view, and any post quoting that post is… ? Nonsense request, that function is inappropriate for forum structure.

Yes, I’m aware you were just being passive aggressive and probably didn’t mean it.

Basically every forum I know has this function. If you quote someone who quoted a blocked person it gave you the option to display the message.

It’s a genuine request, and would function exactly as this fine user has stated. I’m not being passive-aggressive, and I’d probably only use it on a handful of people, but I’d start with people who tell people to use the utterly useless search function.

I confess that I actually do apologize if I arrive moments too late to revive a downed player.

I confess that I use “dude” in a gender-neutral fashion.

I confess that my laurels have been gathering dust since dyes became account-bound. Yes. I used tons of laurels on dye lotteries, and I do not regret it one single bit.

I confess that I want a better computer for the sole purpose of being able to run the sanctum sprint again. (This computer is a downgrade and there’s too much latency/graphical lag to allow me to run it.)

Before I took a break from GW2 there was RPers all over here in Tarnished Coast.
Now it feels like any other server, and people talking about megaserver (have no idea what that is) probably explained why I don’t see RPers here so much.

Megaserver is basically what overflow servers used to be, but all the time. Instead of having instances for each server, you’re all smushed together in one megaserver, and new instances are created as needed. There are algorithms that are supposed to help group you with people in your guild and on your friends list. The only place you’re actually talking to your own server now is in WvW maps.

It sounds a bit weird. It would be much more logical to refuse on the grounds of the item being used or being bought a long time ago after all.

…is this serious? On account of it being bought a long time ago? Holy kitten, I think my head just exploded.

YES. The fact that people have waited for a year and a half for the return of a festival that was initially run twice in a 5-month period and are now fed up with waiting for it, that seems like a way more legitimate reason to deny refunds.

You can’t be serious. You can’t. I refuse to believe that.

The Holy Trinity... is missed.

I played WoW from mid-vanilla until March of this year. I was a fantastic healer and a moderately good off-tank. I liked those roles. I found the mechanics to be interesting and varied. I could heal effectively with 3/4 classes (3/5 after monks were introduced; never did get one to max level- same with paladin).

One of the deciding factors when I switched to GW2 was the lack of the holy trinity. I like the option to support without the pressure to be the healer in every group. I enjoyed it, yes. But if I wanted it back, I’d still be playing WoW, or any other MMO in existence.

I am strongly opposed to introducing a trinity system in GW2.

New trait system...it's why I quit WoW

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

Don’t use any gold you already have.

ONE adept-tier trait

Why uh…why not use gold? It’s not like new players don’t have access to income as well (granted not as much) and Adept tier traits cost 10s and 2 skill points – not exactly something that is out of this world expensive even for a new player.

Then, once they buy traits they feel they might need (if they can’t unlock it by doing any sort of completion), they can use those traits as an investment to acquire their other traits.

The key word in my sentence is already. Use only the coin you make with that character.

I can also confirm that none of the starter area world bosses (like Fire Elemental) unlock any of the adept traits. Instead, we have things like:

Complete the story step “A Light in the Darkness.” (Level 55 personal story for the first trait (I) in the first line.)
Earn 100% map completion in Blazeridge Steppes. (Level 40-50 for the fifth trait (V) in the first line.)
Complete Twilight Arbor on story mode. (Level 50 for the second trait (II) in the second line.)
Earn 100% map completion in Lornar’s Pass. (Level 25-40 zone for the fourth trait (IV) in the second line.)
Complete the story step “The Battle For Clorr Island.” (Level 50 personal story for the second trait (II) in the third line.)
Defeat Victurus the Shattered and his army. (Level 58 group event in Iron Marches for the fourth trait (IV) in the third line.)

Do any of those sound fun to do at level 36 with no traits? I could go on- there are more that are ridiculous, just like these are. Look for yourself.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait_guide

Caudeceus’ Manor is a level 40 story dungeon.
“Retribution” is a level 59 personal story step.
Dredgehaunt Cliffs is a level 40-50 zone.

One trait is 10s now. That’s what we used to pay to unlock all of the adept tiers. We went from 25 traits for 10s to 1 trait for 10s + 2 skillpoints.

Patch for the 19th

Guhracie.3419

It’s part of a larger policy shift, which is simply “less talk, more action.” Fewer promises and less hype, more deliverables.

While everything has already been finalized for the release and been through testing, so there’s (almost) no chance of anything they’d put in previews a week in advance being pulled, I think the silence is just part of their larger change in approach. I’m not in love with it, because I like preview posts, but I’m cautiously optimistic about their renewed focus.

Seriously? Have you even been paying attention to the communication policy? It’s not a shift. It’s the same old dance with a different tune. Their policy has always been “We’re not going to talk about it until it’s done,” even when they were giving blogs. The fact that they’ve managed to rebrand this in such a way as to make it seem like telling people even less is a positive thing is actually impressive.

Feedback/Questions: MegaServer

Guhracie.3419

I was hoping this would work itself out, but it hasn’t, so I would like to mention it.

There are several events in the world boss lineup in particular that it’s nearly impossible to get credit for if you even blink. I have done Maw more often than many others, so I’ll focus on the pre-events for it (Svanir Shaman world boss in Wayfarer Foothills).

Grawl attack Krenneck’s Homestead, protect Scholar Brogun, dragon totem, Defeat the shamans, and close the portals are the events that lead up to the spawn of Maw. All of these should scale according to the number of players in the area. With mobs being weaker due to the trait changes, these guys die in a couple of shots from a level 80, and I’m lucky if I get credit for bronze participation. Spawn more grawl, more help, more portals, and make the totem have significantly more health (when the group demands it). I mean, if you blink, you will miss the dragon totem event. I was shocked to discover that killing the shamans he summoned was an event of its own when I lucked into it one day.

There are many escort events that don’t seem to scale with the crowd at all, and it’s frustrating to miss an event because of the sheer amount of people present. It makes it feel like games with tagging, to be honest, because it’s another kind of competition for kills, instead of cooperation.

Game Updates: Traits

Guhracie.3419

They may have numbers, but they don’t know how it feels to go through the process. There’s a difference. And I’m not convinced they actually pay attention to the metrics involving traits, personally.

They do, that was why they changed the trait system in the first place. It was discussed during the marionette event and they said they were astonished how many people paid that little attention to their traits and changing skills to different situations.
So: You say that they should learn how it feels, but do you know how it feels to all those who don’t write in this thread? Do you know whether or not they like it? The one time someone came into this thread and said he was a new player who liked a),b) and c) but not d) about the system he was met with some rather harsh words. I guess having a look into the data makes more sense than just listening to what we 5 people here have to say. AND it goes faster than making anet try their system themselves.

Oh, I guess that’s why most games don’t have playtesters, because metrics are all that matter. Oh, wait……

Honey, if you start that game again, then have fun – or read what I wrote, think about it and reply in a non pasive agressive manner or: DON’T REPLY TO ME AT ALL.

Near the bottom. They were actually coming late 2013.

" …you’ll also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013."

You asked for a quote saying new legendaries were coming. Of course everything is subject to change. That wasn’t the point. Either you want a quote where they said new legendaries were coming, or you want an iron-clad legal statement guaranteeing something, when you know very well that absolutely everything ANET says will happen is always said with the oft-repeated disclaimer that things are subject to change. Rune of Resistance

I’ll repeat myself, but how many runes are there that exclude a single class out?
Sure, there are some who cater especially to some classes – like the runes named after the classes, for example – but these aren’t one of those. They aren’t called Rune of No Engineer Here, after all, and neither they have a similar name.
These runes should be a reward of the new fractals – and engineers are getting left out. Without reason – cause those runes could have worked with either gadgets or elixirs, thus giving an option for every class.

Ok, I take your point, it’s not so much that there’s a rune set that engineers (or any profession) can’t use that there’s a rune set that only engineers can’t use and it’s being offered as a reward of high level/end game content. Yes, that does suck and they should do something to fix that before it’s released.

Thanks. I’ll pass this on.

So, this is how it works? Cherry pick ONE PERSON’s “list of things I don’t like”, while ignoring 40 pages of really good feedback and ideas? OK. I’m done with this thread.

From this response from JonPeters and his initial post it is obvious that Anet is not going to fix their new leveling process or trait system except the individual tasks themselves.

I’m discouraged since I used to like leveling new alts but can live with just playing my level 80s instead.

To be clear we are looking at the system as a whole but recognize that changing that will take longer than is satisfying and are looking for ways to improve the current system until a time at which we can make a better overall system from the ground up. Specific suggestions on what traits are poorly placed are helpful for #1, specific suggestions on #2 are also welcome but are going to be read but not responded too right now.

So, if I’m reading this right, are you saying, you’re looking for quick changes to make the system more bearable while not confirming or denying the possibility of a holistic revamp at some point in the indeterminate future?

Because knowing that would really settle some of my anxiety about the existence of this request for feedback.

Yup. and I would replace the word possibility with the word probability…

He wants to know how to make what we’ve got tolerable in the more foreseeable future, which means he needs clear and concise lists focused on a single topic in order to act more quickly and effectively.

He’s telling us what he wants so that he can work on something specific. This is how feedback is supposed to work.

We all know the current system is majorly flawed. Heck, THEY know the current system is majorly flawed, but they’re trying to do what they can in the short-term so that they have the freedom to consider the long-term.

Oh! Okay. So what you’re saying is that feedback works when there’s an interaction between both parties, wherein one party communicates what they need and the other party communicates what they need to know in order to give the first party what they need? Thanks for clearing that up. Obviously my anger is misplaced.

See, I was under the impression that when this so-called “feedback thread” was started, four and a half months ago, we were providing the developers with feedback. I didn’t realize that I was supposed to wait for them to draw out specifications before giving my feedback, and I certainly didn’t realize that it would take them nearly half a year to come up with a suitable line of communication.

I obviously have a lot to learn about how feedback “works.”

Game Updates: Traits

I can understand the distaste over it because this is not designed for power levelers. However, if it was played like how they game intended it to be, it be fun.

Not on your 3rd+ character. It’s nothing but an annoyance at that point, compared to the previous system where everything was handed to you from the getgo, and they just threw you out in the world and said “do whatever you want”.

If you don’t want to find all those traits, you can always buy them from profession trainers.

But that isn’t making the system fun, or rewarding. People are actually paying not to play it.

If the traits were account unlocks I would genuinely love them. Every unlock, even the grub, would be satisfying. As it is, every one is just a frustrating thing that I can’t even tick off a list because I know I’ll have to do it again and again.

Yeah, anytime the traits are purchased is pretty much an indictment of the system. And the only build diversity this encourages is in having a patchwork of nonsensical traits, which is just bad, and why am I even wasting my energy writing in this thread anymore?

Dailies and other dismal failures

If this is the first time you’ve seen anyone comment that they dislike the new daily system, you haven’t been here very long. There have been lengthy discussions about funneling people into game modes they don’t like, double fractals, fewer choices for PvE players, maps being overrun and events not coded to scale to handle the number of people doing them, and just generally lacking in flavour. I’m sure I’m missing some things. Honestly, dailies and monthlies kept getting me out in the game world for a long time. Since this new system was implemented almost a year ago, I’ve done maybe 5-10 jumping puzzles, and I don’t think I’ve completed a full set of dailies since June or July. I know I’m just one person, but I know I’m not the only one whose passion for the game has been strangled to death.

You know, I agreed with this sentiment way back in April, about the trait changes in the first feature patch. I felt certain that it would be addressed sooner rather than later. So I expressed my displeasure, I explained why it was impeding my enjoyment, and I gave plenty of suggestions for how to improve the system.

I did that over the course of four months, at which point a developer came into the thread and said they needed some time to discuss the issues internally. Then another developer came in and asked for feedback about the trait system. Because the 4 month old thread had over 40 pages in it, and that was just too much to read.

I’ve given them time. And I lost my faith in the team because of it.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

Having this new thread without any actual information on what the new system will bring just invites the recreation of the last one, with the same posts and conversations and complaints as the last one.

Here’s the situation, as Gaile pointed out above.

The old thread was redundant, non-constructive, and, ultimately, irrelevant, because Colin posted saying that ANet is working on a new Trait system and that some player feedback had been taken into account when developing that system. Therefore, there was absolutely nothing of value that could be added to that thread, which is why Gaile said she should’ve closed it right when Colin posted.

However, imagine the rage at the travesty of closing that thread WITHOUT opening another thread focused on Traits feedback. Why, the forums would explode! Players would launch their own personal vendettas against ANet, or further embellish the ones they’ve already begun.

So, Gaile opened this new thread. Yes, there aren’t any new facts or concrete details we can discuss – right now. Which is why she suggested to step away from the entire topic for a while, instead of going through the same cycle as the first thread. But people can’t do that, I predict, so it’s a lose-lose situation for everyone.

finally, someone who gets it!

Praise Dwayna, yes! Thanks insanemaniac and Corax for the words of wisdom.

So you consider it to be words of wisdom that feedback from customers is, “non-constructive,” and, “ultimately irrelevant ?”

I find that to be a bit surprising considering how much effort on the part of players went into suggestions and the like in the other thread. I dont deny that some posts went too far or were offensive, but to disregard everyone who tried to participate in providing solutions to a perceived problem by describing their dismissal by others as words of wisdom seems a bit off in my opinion.

This. I’m speechless and utterly disappointed by this and other jabs by Ms. Gray.

Re: 10 months isn’t a lot of time in software development… blah blah blah. There are plenty of ways they could’ve made the system more bearable in the meantime with absolutely minimal effort (resetting the cost to the original prices, as an example), without needing to implement an entirely new system. Let’s not make excuses, given that Anet’s opinion of the feedback thread was that it was just an echo chamber of useless, venomous raving, apparently.

Arenanet had better cancel Heart of Thorns, just in case.

all hell breaks loose.

If only there were some kind of benevolent patrician on the forums who could deal with their concerns..

This. Not to mention my impossible dream of there being some kind of powerful — probably alien — technology they could use to, oh, I don’t know, delete angry posts that cross the line of civility or to otherwise moderate these threads. This power of, shall we say, “moderation” would probably have to be wielded by ancient beings of immense and unfathomable power.

Perhaps we could call them…Moderators?

If only we had that kind of technology. Sigh…

whispers : Guys… you’re really messing up the straw man that people have so lovingly prepared.

As much goodwill as the livestream about traits bought from me, personally, it’s still not enough to make me even consider pre-ordering HoT. I mean, look at what happened to all the people who pre-ordered SAB.

Traits Part 2

Guhracie.3419

yeah I think im gonna have to give up on GW2 since Anet doesnt seem to give a kitten about removing the horrible “improvements” no one asked for in the first place.

“improvements” and a total lack of communications over the course of a WHOLE YEAR

traits unlock and town clothes were FINE as they were,

now traits are a horrible grind and town clothes are useless and cant be dyed.

toon specific guild repping is an absurd design , but it doest matter , guild chat is broken beyond recognition.

SAB aint coming back. Necromancer minions still useless. Low tier WvW is basically PvE since all you ever fight is a bunch of npcs.

ever since April 2014 :

friend : dude you still playing GW2 ?
me : yeah
friend : I’m thinking about getting the game, what character should I make first ?
me : listen to me very carefully, dont buy the game in its current state.

WoW what changed suddenly? What did I miss? Did someone say they would fix something again – like they did with hobosacks and it never came to pass?

What was it specifically because I just have to know?

I genuinely would like to know because it seems by some of the posts I missed last time around of reading through the most recent posts that something has changed? o.0

Nothing has changed. At ALL. Therein lies the problem. Seven months ago, we were assured that they were looking into quick fixes. Two months ago, we were assured that we’d be getting details on a complete overhaul. In less than ten days, it will be a full year since the implementation of this system and all we have are the same assurances we’ve had from the beginning. It is unacceptable. I guess I’ve just hit that wall, personally.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

After leveling a post feature patch character, the only changes I think the trait system needs are to remove trait unlocks from the wubwub and to make sure all the associated events work properly and happen often.

It’s way less obnoxious than elite skills were in GW1, the traits all come from zones about the level each trait tier is unlocked, and a lot of the requirements are things you should be doing anyway (like map completion).

Why should I have to do map completion on my thirteenth character? Also, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Arguing that the system upon which this one is based was worse is hardly a credit to this system. It just means the original system was terrible.

“Scam” implies you are paying for it.

Semantics. You know exactly what he wanted to say.

No. The meaning you give to a word comes from context. If theres not enough context, it must be clarified. You can just go around saying “You know what I mean”.
What I read is what’s written there.

And there it says ArenaNet is scamming people with he feature pack.

ArenaNet’s overlords may be imposing on the game several policies like gemstore pricings and how items are obtained by characters or the account that are scams, but the feature pack isn’t one.

The meaning of a word comes from its definition, and the actual definition of “scam” doesn’t imply money. It implies dishonesty.

Break up the makeover kit and put it in the wardrobe function. Use transmute charges, or use makeover charges, and let me change the color of my hair/accessory/norn tattoos/whatever else individually. A more flexible system means it’ll get used more often. I know the wardrobe has made it so that I’m way more likely to change my look- I’ve probably used twice as many transmutes since the patch as I had before. The way it is now, it feels punitive to fiddle with some minor appearance thing because it will use up a whole kit, but give us the ability to control what we’re tweaking, and I bet you’ll see way more cosmetic variety. Also, I’d love to be able to preview the premium faces/colors without having a kit on hand.
