The story means nothing… from level 20 it’s the same for every race. And no I can’t be bothered re-leveling a class because I don’t like the race, only because they think “You’ll miss part of the story”. That’s pathetic. If they asked me to complete the racial story, sure. The racial story is pretty good. Post level 20 sucks though, so why make me level 60 more levels? It’s utterly brainless.

Not Buying the Expansion

in WvW

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

I was always going to hold off on the expansion, but I don’t like to burn bridges.

Could be a while, could be never, it’s up to them.

This has me curious. Didn’t you, as forum specialist, get selected based on favoritism towards the game and it’s developers? The obvious answer based on this is, no. I see that as a sign of honesty on ArenaNets side, but they really should just listen to the wishes of their customers more, that way people are happy with the game and buy expansions because they want to.

There is a desire for mounts! [merged]

Sirendor.1394

Now for a more serious post regarding your topic.

We already have a “broomstick” mount. I wouldn’t mind race specific “mounts” like the broomstick one. It will be cosmetic only and adds no movement speed (I don’t think it takes that long to run around maps, really).

Sylvari: Oakheart
Charr: Mechanical motorcycle/4 wheeler
Human: Moa/cow/bull (have yet to see a horse)
Asura: Golem
Norn: Dolyak

Yep if they’re purely cosmetic and let you use your utility skills while on them. No speed boosts involved in the mount itself, just let us sit on them, i’m sure it’ll look cool.

Guild Suggestions(Content+fixes)

in Suggestions

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

There sure need to be more options for guilds. I’ve read through your post and like most of the ideas there. At the moment guilds don’t seem to mean anything at all. You’re in a guild and the only real benefits seem to be the boosts and being able to talk. The end.
That’s not enough: this is a game evolved around guilds, how can guilds possible be so meaningless?

First things we need:
> A fix to non-representing people (either one guild, either being able to see when last represented)
> Guild instances with houses for the guild members in it.
> Persistent changes for guilds: being able to own towns, build content, WvW?
> Guild missions: yay!
> Guild vs. Guild
> Tags that show up for guild members to allow for better coördination for leaders and officers in PvP
> Alliances!!
> Edit: all the changes suggested by top poster, but essentially a way to manage guilds easier.

Being rewarded for investing time is neither casual nor hardcore, it’s just tryharding.

Having no life is not equivalent to skillful play.

Implying that putting in time / hard work shouldn’t be rewarded?

But to be clear I believe that skillful play should cut down on the grind, for example killing a single champ than having to kill 50 random monsters.

But hard work is all some have – saying that only those who are skillful should get certain rewards is something akin to claiming that only those who have time should get the rewards. Both parties deserve the chance to get the rewards in tier own playstyle. Then there is casual play which is rewarded with random loot drops ect.

Agree. But now we have rewards only for hardworking (or rather hardfarming) players with really big chunks of free time to spend. Kudos for them, I wish I were in their shoes. But I’m not.
Anet stated some time ago, that not every single LS arch will be for everyone. Let’s see how it went (Halloween and xmas aside), from my perspective (no one has to agree):
Lost Shore – a lil bit out of no where story, with hazy implementation. If we even can count it itno LS
Flame & Frost – all archs. A lil bit for farmers, something for those who like dungeons and slow pacing stories.
The secret of Southsun – farmfest
Last stand at Southsun – farmfest
SAB – jumping puzzle + farmfest for bubbles
Dragon Bash – farmfest + miniPvP game
Skypirates of Tyria – farmfest + dungeon
Bazaar of the Four Winds – farmfest + minigames
Cutthroat Politics – farmfest + 2 x minigames + a lot of political gireving for fractals with another layer of farmfest
Queen’s Jubilee – farmfest like never before
Clockwork Chaos – farmfest taken to another level

I agree, I also belive that best option is to design content, that could be beaten in several ways. You can do it by skillfull gamplay, by time consuming hardwork or something in the middle. Easy long way, normal way and extremely short and hard way.
But as it comes, we have only the farm way, You need to grind, or You stay behind. It’s like I’m playing another "f"2p Korean MMO. In last 2 weeks economy inflated so hard, prices on TP skyrocket to the celestial plane, that it leaves casual players in really bad situation. And we’re talking about 100% casual friendly game, aren’t we?

You are completely right, but arenanet simply doesn’t care. They’re only looking for better ways to create revenue.

The dialogue... oh lord, the dialogue...

in Personal Story

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

For the record, I don’t have a problem with the visuals on the cutscenes (I’ve played plenty of low-budget RPGs that went the “cardboard cutout” route), but admittedly, I think I’d rather just watch the characters stand around in the real world and chat, rather than cut to a separate screen to do it.

That all said, I’m sure that a lack of movement and facial expression has something to do with the dialogue problems, but I’m not sure exactly how much. The dialogue itself is pretty cringe-worthy, before taking visuals into account.

I agree to this point. The cutscenes lack touch with reality. The characters’ facials and gestures just don’t fit what they say most of the time and it looks like it’s fake.
I’d rather just text boxes like we had them in Guild Wars 1. There’s no need to try to make it feel realistic, if it doesn’t seem realistic in the end. Just stick with the good old chat box.

If you do not take this chance to make constructive suggestions, then you give up the right to QQ.

That said, we need more information from Anet before we can provide useful feedback. If we do not know the plans then all of our suggestions are based on what exists right now. When planning a major overhaul, everything could change and our ideas could be invalid. I look forward to the upcoming blog post and hope that it comes sooner rather than later so our ideas can be included in the design process rather than just during beta tests.

I have waited years for a WvW overhaul. Keep calm and carry on for the next month (or so) until we get more information so we can discuss the positives/negatives and work with the devs to improve WvW in a way that benefits all of us.

1. The forums are full of constructive suggestions; anet never even comments on them
2. Agreed, information should definitely be shared before the beta phases.

WXP for laurels is not alt friendly

in WvW

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

Hey folks,

The addition of the bonus WXP for laurels/badges is simply intended to give WvW players an additional option they can spend their laurels/badges on, it is not intended to fix any issues with alts and WxP.

We’re aware of, and actively discussing the amount of progression we’ve added through WxP and the difficulty for playing multiple characters as a result. When we make changes to help address alts/WxP rank, we’ll make sure to specifically call out the change is to help address that issue.

Do that for Ascended gear you love so much as well. As it stands you are making the most Alt unfriendly game in history. STOP WITH THE GRIND.

Collaborative Development: World Population

Sirendor.1394

1) Physically balance the populations through transfers, either forced or with strong incentives.

2) Capping how many players can enter a map.

3) Buffing the disadvantaged side or nerfing the advantaged side.

4) Adding or buffing NPCs.

You forgot 5) Delete servers and make it “Alliances”, cross-server, with overflows, or a sufficient number of maps (that might mean one complete open world server with capture-able pve environments).
To prevent everyone from stacking: Reward each player individually for:
- Kills done over the week
- Healing done over the week
- Damage done over the week
- Siege usage over the week
- Yak-kills/defends over the week
- Tower defences over the week

Then reward each alliance based on:
- PPT score
- Population in WvW (e.g. alliance A has 100% players logged in, alliance B has only 50%, alliance B has 70%). Reward the outnumbered based on their relative PPT score.

Teeny Tiny Expansion

Sirendor.1394

Eye of the North – the only GW expansion we have ever seen:
no new classes
no new playable races
phew new maps but nothing close to the size of continent
maps had terrible textures
a little new skills
some new armor sets

Only expansion? What GW have you been playing? Factions and Nightfall were expansions bro.

Factions and Nightfall were stand-alone campaigns Brah. EoTN was a true xpac. check the wiki brah.

It’s not cause they can be played without having the base game that they aren’t expansions… they work on same engine, sync with eachother and continue on the same lore. That’s pretty much an expansion, even if you call it a “campaign”.

Also, sorry to offend all your dreams, oh almighty fanboi community. /sarcasm

I listed what I normally view as an expansion, based on previous experience, I am not asking you to accept that, but for god’s sake HoT looks like a regular, and pretty low content, patch.

Sirendor.1394

My thought Inkubus, is that mounts are totally unneccesary:
→ Waypoints
→ Swiftness
What else would you want? Mounts won’t prove a huge addition to the game, just something we don’t really need, but that came anyways.

Player Housing and additionally Guild Towns on the other hand do improve the game. The whole game is about Guilds and yet we don’t seem to have any special Guild features… which is quite lame imo. There should be some kind of incentive why you would actually want to be in a guild, e.g. cause you can ‘live’ (as far as it’s possible in a game) in a town with mates, cause you can play events in that town etc.

What GW2 feels like.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

The OP has some valid points about problems in this game that need to be fixed. But I completely disagree that the Living Story destroyed this game. In fact, since the game still exists and seems to have players in it, one would think it’s not been destroyed at all.

I do know a lot of people don’t like the living story but I also know that a lot of people do like the living story.

Obviously people who don’t like it feel the game is ruined by it and those who like it, like me, may very well think the game was saved by it.

Hi Vayne. I understand you disagree and I’m okay with it, just allow me to clarify what I ment with it.

The game is not dead at this moment so in principle, no living story did not kill it… but in the future (mid this year, next year) GW2 will get into a struggle to keep it’s head above the water with games like Wildstar, ESO and EQN launching. That’s obviously quite normal, because new games always have more new content to offer than existing ones.

In this case however, I don’t see what GW2 can offer that isn’t in those other games and most likely will be better in those games. Living Story is fine, if you like stories, but for me it is not equal to what a traditional expansion would have given us. In the first year I was totally okay to pay an expansion. By this time, I’m doubtful if I would purchase one, given that I can go play a completely new game for the same price.

So yes, indirectly Living Story may cost GW2 a lot of their playerbase in the year to come, because it reduced attention for other parts of the game that are in a rather sorry state (the same state as they were at launch actually): SPvP, WvW.

Edit: decided that that was not all. :P

To add, I don’t think that this game is necessarily done for. The more time I spend reflecting on it, the more I HOPE that it will not. So let this thread be a (timely?) warning to ArenaNet and hope that they manage to add enough content of worth in the feature patch coming April/May to satisfy their player.

Sirendor.1394

“The Season 1 is a failure overall”. Do you agree?

Yes. Servers are completely unbalanced and victory is pretty much assured because certain servers have more players, others have less. The ones with more population win, end of story, no competition. On that note, some servers are marked as high population, but a big percentage of their players have stopped playing and still count for high population. Transfers are broken. The worst thing is that the servers with more blobs will be rewarded more than servers with organized small scale teams, because blobs overpower anything.

Everyone who played for example 1000 hours of this game should be able to get a legendary, because if not a legendary is worse than a full time job and nobody wants that whilst they’re playing a game.

Make alternative ways to get a precursor: e.g. buy them with dungeon tokens, buy them with badges of glory, buy them with laurels, buy them with karma etc etc etc

White Sword Removal Very Helpful

in WvW

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

.
white sword removal didn’t bring anything good to wvw. the op saying he caps undefended stuff is exactly the kind of thing thats bores us to death. I’d much rather have a fight vs players than fight structures.

Perfect. Then have i got a deal for you. It is calle sPvP. Specifically designed arounf points that are not structures, and fighting other players.

By the way, I really liked you on the podcast you used to participate in, but stop using the words “us” and “we”. No one voted or elected you, or empowered you, to speak for others here. We have differing opinions, and that is fine. But drop the attempts to give you opinion more weight then others, by implying that you speak for anyone other then yourself.

When I say us or we I mean my group/guild which was clearly referred before in that post. I am a guild leader and I’m very aware of how everyone in my guild/group feels about the change so I can kinda speak for them. I don’t pretend or care to speak for anyone else.

As for the “go spvp” remark, I don’t get it. Am I not supposed to pvp in wvw? Shouldn’t I be allowed to have fun the way I always had in wvw? What makes fighting structures and not players so interesting? Shouldn’t you go PvE by that logic then? Not saying you should, but you have to see how flawed such logic is.

I am with Maskaganda on this. I know TCHU from my time on gandara and they were (and I believe still are) one of the best, if not the best, small scale squads on the whole server, and in that regard I think he’s a good representative of small scale on other servers too.

I know a lot of people think SPvP is for “fighting other players” where WvW is for “following commander and taking stuff”. Well, you’re wrong. WvW is a PvP mode as much and more than SPvP will ever be, because SPvP does not work around fighting but around bunkering/capping points. Courtyard is the only exception, but it’s implementation is so poor that only premades are fighting there, haven’t tried with a guild group myself yet. Anyways, WvW is still the best place for people who like PvP.

When Maskaganda says it bores “us” I imagine he’s speaking for his guild and possibly other small scale/havoc/roaming squads. My guild even has a sort of rule that we only take structures that are defended by other server, because that way it’s challenging and fun. Taking empty structures? Waaw, you must feel so good. If that’s your thing, I suggest you go do PvE instead of WvW.

Grind & GW2 - YEP

Months on end people have been complaining about GW2 and it’s excessive attention to grinding. I found this quote on MMORPG.com (see below) and it really touches the point. Instead of playing the game, people play numbers. Let me elaborate.

WvW:

  • Farm player kills (3476/250.000), you are one kill closer to “Ultimate Dominator”, and will reach this title in approximately 35 years.
  • Farm badges
  • Farm dolyak kills
  • Farm rare/exotic drops
  • Instead of enjoying the world, enjoying battle scenes, enjoying advanced tactics, enjoying teamplay…

PvE:

  • Farm champions for rare/exotic drops that will bring you 20s-300s closer to a legendary weapon. Congratulations you still have 1.066 exotic drops to go and about 30.000 champion kills.
  • Farm dungeons for tokens, to salvage rares, that you then sell on the tp for money.
  • Farm achievements, because you then get 2 gold for 500 achievement points that took you 2 weeks to gather!! OMG.
  • Farm Living story – cause everyone does it and I need materials so I can buy the +1 ascended gear, because the stats are 10% better, but why do we need them if the bosses are just scaled with exotic armour?
  • Farm explorable maps, because then you are one heart closer (heart being kill 30x and gather 20x) to map completion!!
  • Instead of enjoying the exploration itself, having fun fighting hard mobs etc.

SPvP:

  • Farm hot-join matches or tournaments, for glory, so you get a virtual rank 45 that actually doesn’t give you anything.
  • Instead of dueling for fun etc.

Is the whole GW2 community who goes along with this kittened or is that just my opinion?

Roll on to GW2 and every area just feels the same. Quick finish and pass by to next area, rinse and repeat till level 80.

I agree. When I was playing and leveling my toon in GW2 . I actually was more focused on the map and the dot of my character and not the environment itself. Just focusing of where my character was going and not what I was doing. My character dot on the world map was my environment 50 % of the time.
Grinding has it’s flaw of course, but it’s forced people to group together and work together. Not in some ‘’public group’’ , but in private group where you had to talk to other human being. That how camaraderie started and guild were formed. In today mmorpg, I just don’t care. Everyone want to do their own little thing and move on to the next zone the fastest possible so I do the same and get bored very quickly. GW2 world was emptier than DAOC. Since I did not care about it, I just cared about the experience I gained in it.
Older mmorpg like daoc and UO had a great community because players felt they were being part of it New MMORPG are all ’’MEMEME’’ and ’’NOWNOWNOW’’. It’’s reflect well the hyper-individualist culture of North America. Not caring about the people, but where you’re heading.
Thing with new mmorpg is .. You’re so spammed with quest that you don’t care anymore. They should do something more like a chainable quest with other area to explore rather than exclamation point everywhere making you lose interest in the environment and others player.

GW1 Nostalgia -- Why not just PLAY GW1?

You’re right, he does have a point in that a successful MMO is an evolutionary process and not a polished dream right out of the box. I was also trying to bait him into a more drawn out argument because that’s not exactly the essence of the argument here is it?

You’re also right in saying that it’s hard to cater to all the different kinds of players at the same time, which has a lot to do with what everyone is talking about here. A key point of the issue is GW2 isn’t catering to the same crowd as GW1. They are catering to the casual masses. That’s fine if that’s what a company wants to do. There’s certainly money to be had in that, especially since the casual crowd is the fastest growing demographic in a decidedly cutthroat market.

What a lot of us take issue with is the contention that ANet gave every indication of making it a game for the GW1 type of player. A game for players who thrived on challenging content, strategic build diversity, meaningful storyline elements, and especially highly competitive, team-oriented PvP. They didn’t exactly do that, did they? If you’re going cater to a different crowd, have the decency to say so instead of pulling the proverbial wool over our eyes.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but I don’t know how to put it another way.

Hello Obsidian, I really didn’t mean to counter your point and I don’t really agree with the way the game is going either, as my posting history probably points out.

Your remark about different public is probably correct, and it would seem the public GW2 focuses most on is the one who:
1) doesn’t like hard challenges
2) isn’t very interested in competitive PvP
3) doesn’t mind repeating content countless times
4) cares for “being the best” more than actually playing the game (which we see in the way legendaries are dealt out, the way ascended are dealt out).

It would seem GW2 developers initially had great ideas and really didn’t expect players to burn through content all that fast, but truth be told, it was fun, it was massive and people thought they would make it challenging enough to make it last, just like GW1, by releasing high quality over the course of a few months.

I think most people in my first guild stopped playing around December-January-February, that’s when the first big shockwave of leavers hit. In the period from August to December they should have been able to prepare a new release, possibly just 1 single new map, but they didn’t. They were too late in releasing anything interesting and people gave up. They expected A LOT of this game, because it was being hyped from at least early 2012, and then in a few months, the average player already completed everything there was to the game.

My hypothesis is that Anet felt like they needed to bring in more stuff for casual players who didn’t rush through all the content yet, and tried to keep them playing at all costs, through shallow patches. Once they started down that road, they scared off anyone who was after challenging content, and developed an increasing need to cater to casuals.

Personally, I live for challenges, and it’s certainly not what I expected from Guild Wars 2, when I look back to GW1 being such a rich experience (when we look at other games of that time), with an epic story and a great feel of progression for the player, with a little grind (titles mostly), but something you weren’t forced to do and was really only for really really really hardcore players.

For me living story is bad in following ways:
- Story: predictable, unrealistic, cliché
- “Living”: it doesn’t live, there are near to no permanent changes to the world
- Achievements: achievements are very much a grind
- Rewards: nothing special
- Rough: the general design is rather rough, not detailed, hurried

Duh we need account-bound WXP and ranks. It’s horrible like it is now and only serves to widen the gap between long time -players and new ones. Ascended is the same route…
A lot of WvW players I know (I’m a WvW-only player myself), don’t bother getting ascended.

Defending really should be rewarded more. It’s a lot more fun than attacking imo and requires more skill because we often defend a tower against a zerg of 30 with only 5.

Yes, more exclusivity and restrictions, that will make the game great!
It’s a sad day when people can be so selfish the day before Thanksgiving.
