Making bank in game while making bank IRL?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

I suspect that the reality is the vast majority of players are not making hundreds of gold a week, or even a month. A minority might do, and they’re probably also people who are more inclined to spend time on the forum talking about it. But if most people were able to do it the rate of inflation in game would be much higher than it is.

My solution is fairly simple: I accept that I won’t make gold as fast as some people do, and therefore won’t be able to buy expensive items as frequently, and then I stop worrying about it and get on with playing.

Most importantly I don’t care how much gold I have at any given time. I don’t try to keep a fixed amount, or earn a fixed amount per day/week/month. I’ve been playing since launch with no significant breaks and I can only remember one time when I had more than 100g, that was the 7 months when I was saving for a precursor. It might actually have happened at other times but I don’t remember.

Shortly after buying the precursor (which cost me just under 800g) I got down to literally nothing: I bought the precursor, spent almost all of what was left over on materials for an ascended coat, went to Drytop for some reason and died, and the waypoint cost took the last of my coin. But that didn’t matter either, especially because it was in the middle of an event so about 2 minutes later I jumped back up to over 1s.

Instead what I do is keep a mental list of items I want, roughly in order of priority (and subject to change at any moment) and as and when I have enough for the next one I want I buy it. It might be weeks or months between purchases, or it might be very quick (although that’s usually when something relatively cheap jumps up the list – like when I randomly decided I wanted the noble coat skin for my ranger). Buying the item might take me back down to under 1g. But none of that matters.

Spending gold on things I want is just another goal to work towards within the game. I don’t worry about completing achievements on a regular basis (even dailies), or completing maps within a certain time frame. Why would my approach to gold be any different?

(And now I come to think about it I think this is at least partially because I’m an adult, officially at least, and in real life I have to be responsible with money; making sure I can pay my bills and afford food and something goes into the savings account for emergencies etc. Games are my escape from that, where I can spend everything I have on something random and not care because I don’t need to afford food or rent or whatever.)

I think we need both types of maps.

Random Dynamic events mean it is possible to go for a while without one. I remember before the megaservers loving the apps that let me know when DE were about to start or ongoing because sometimes, especially when you have a fully explored map, you don’t have too much to do.

Ascended items are Anet biggest mistake and a kneejerk reaction.

If the expansion is no longer fun for you after 1month, then I’d say pack it up and call it a day on GW2, my friend.

It seems as though reward is all you want to play for and that you never truly found any of the content fun in this game. You seemingly liked dungeons, now they don’t reward you as well, so you don’t like them. Fractals (which is hands-down MY favorite content) doesn’t give good enough rewards after you do the dailies, so my guess is you only do the dailies, if at all. Also you find them boring.

There aren’t really problems with PvP other than people haven’t adapted to the new specs. Trap DHs? I play a trap DH. It was great owning people those first two weeks. Then players caught on. Oh wait, you triggered my traps then ran out of them and put like 6 conditions on me? Guess I’ll just stand here and die…

I’d suggest finding a game you feel is rewarding enough for the time you put in.

Did you check your wardrobe to see if the other skin weights are unlocked? If so, then you might just craft another shoulder piece, or use the one you have, and skin it over.

yes, but i was crafting my necro’s light ascended shoulder piece to be nightfury….i would need to craft another ascended shoulder and skin it as nightfury….then i would have an extra heavy class shoulder piece for no reason. its just unnecessary and extremely annoying, plus poor work on the dev’s part for not clarifying the options.

I confirmed that the 10 non-account bound mystic forge stones I had in the bank are now account bound and stack with previous stones. I cancelled my orders I had placed for these stones and got my money refunded. They can still be found on the TP in a bugged manner because undoubtedly people put them up for sale when there were not account bound and never cancelled their sale.

So if any of you out there read this, cancel your buying/selling of these stones as the transaction can’t go through.

It is a potential issue.

People can say it’s not, as much as they like, but the truth is that if something like this is available, most people will require people to use it (especially for PUGs, or whatever) and it’s a slippery slope.

It’s the same with DPS meters.

If they are available, even if only to the player, people will require people to post their DPS.

Sometimes that might be a good thing, with certain unfairly maligned classes, but more often than not, it will not be.

I’ve been through all this in WoW.

Allowing inspection, measuring and third party stuff never seems to end well and turns the game into paint by numbers.

This is a potential issue in the same way that the LFG requirements are an issue. It’s not.

Give raids a little bit more time. Once every trick, pattern, etc. has been thoroughly dissected and examined, raids will be able to be run with nearly anyone. Just like dungeons, world bosses, etc.

As far as things like this being a requirement. There is nothing wrong with wanting to play with people of a certain mindset, or have certain builds. That is their choice. There is no one compelling anyone to use this, if they are, they probably are not type of people you should be running with anyway. Such people tend to be petty and cranky when something happens that they don’t like.

why isnt there a soulbound or account bound bag for player’s items??
for example if you swap between a 1-hand weapon and a off-hand to a 2-hand weapon from the safe bag, the off-hand weapon ends up somewhere in your inventory, not back in your safe bag. Get it?

i find these very inconvenient because when i try to re-equip my 1-hand and off-hand weapon from my 2-hand i have a hard time looking for my off-hand weapon as it gets lost in my inventory

Currently, finding a good instance of one of the new HoT maps is the most rewarding way of play.

If you want liquid gold, TD is the best map to go but you will also find it hardest to get a good instance there because of an overly difficult meta event.

Otherwise, you can go play fractals. The current reward is not amazing, but the liquid gold is actually decent given how quick some of those low level runs are. Very reminiscent of the old dungeon farming.

In addition, they will soon increase fractal rewards. So if you are a huge dungeon guy, get your AR ready and play fractals.

This.

It sucks, but the reality here is that Anet doesn’t have an oceanic server cluster and the game is not (and won’t ever be) designed to play with a 200ish ping.

You’re connecting to a game you know is going to be laggy and unresponsive, then complaining it is laggy and unresponsive.

Anet needs to just establish an oceanic cluster for you guys alreaday. There are so many people I see on US servers and I’d bet just as many on EU servers that a small cluster would easily pay for itself.

So, uh, I do this kind of stuff for a living. I can’t say exactly why anet isn’t interested in upgrading, but I can offer some common reasons I or my clients have not immediately switched to newer API versions in the past.

Because switching to a completely separate graphics API is not a matter of just changing a few variables in most cases. It often requires replacing large sections of depreciated code, and this process is generally more complex the bigger a version jump you are making.

Because designing effects and assets to take advantage of any new rendering features may make current installs unplayable, which means you’re not actually taking advantage of the most marketable features of the API upgrade (new rendering features, material pipelines, or performance enhancements that would allow you to cram more polygons, textures, shader passes, or other visual data on screen)

Because MMOs in general don’t like to demand their users to upgrade to experience updated content. it’s far more likely to lose more players than it gains.

Because art direction contributes more to the overall aesthetic quality of a game than shader technology.

Because no matter what it requires engineers to stop working on new things in order to retrofit an old thing.

Anets reasons could be any or none of these, but it’s not uncommon to “version lock” any external programming APIs the minute a new version conflicts with internal code just to simplify your pipeline.

I dont think the Game Director and Game Economist should be spend long hours of game-testing long term goals.

The precursor journeys are meant to be long term goals and an alternative route to a precursor that better illustrates your progress towards it.

They were never meant to be saving you alot of time or gold in order to get one.

So i wonder what this kind of project is supposed to prove.

Let me repost some data I posted a while ago. This is for promoting kitten into T2-T5. I’ve never collected data on T5 to T6.

You get on average roughly 1/3rd of the lower tier mat. So 50 in yields 16-17 out while 250 is 83-84. ON AVERAGE

I can’t say that enough. ON AVERAGE

The range for 250 mats in is 40 to 200 mats out. There’s been times I’ve gotten over 650 back from 5 stacks of 250, other times I got less than 300. But ON AVERAGE I get in the low 400s or roughly 1/3rd.

I have data an 175, 250 mat in promotions. Now binning the samples into buckets 10 wide …

40-49: 25
50-59: 20
60-69: 32
70-79: 27
80-89: 10
90-99: 8
100-109: 4
110-119: 10
120-129: 15
130-139: 7
140-149: 1
150-159: 4
160-169: 1
170-179: 4
180-189: 2
190-200: 5

Median (half samples below/above this number): 73
1st 20%: 40-53
2nd 20%: 54-66
3rd 20%: 67-80
4th 20%: 80-121
5th 20%: 121-199

Mean (numerical average): 86.75
1 sigma range (68.2% of the time): 51-127
2 sigma range (95.4% of the time): 42-190

What you notice is the median is significantly less than the mean/average. That means if you will see more output below the average and that can seem like RNG is not in your favor, that you are getting unlucky. But if you look at the distribution you see two “bumps”, one around 50-79 and a smaller second bump around 110-129. It doesn’t take many returns above the median to pull your current session’s average up to the “historical” one.

That’s why you have to look at all the promotions you are doing over time and not focus on individual ones, or even a few session’s. You have to trust that the Law of Large Numbers, that with enough trials the results will converge on the projected average, will prevail in the end.

It’s also the reason I don’t bother chasing the “big” profit per skill shard ones if the % of profit is below 30-40%. The variance in promotion output is too high. Right now the highest profit mat promotion according to GW2Shinies is green wood planks to soft wood planks at 2.5 gold per spirit shard which is fantastic. However it’s less than a 4% profit. They use an average of roughly 86.33 which means if you get only 83 from the promotion you don’t even break even. However platinum ingots, the next most profitable at 1.73 gold, has a 24% profit and you will sill make a few coppers even if the promotion returned 70.

TL;DR – play the averages but take % profit into account which mats you promote if you are doing this simply for the money.

Yes, mat promotion rates are still random but with a large enough of promotions it does converge on an average rate of roughly 1/3rd of the amount you put it, other than promotion to T6. That means 50 in gives you roughly 17 and 250 in gives you roughly 84.

I promote numerous times nightly and get within 10% of these averages 95% of the time.

Sinister vs. Viper

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Blood Red Arachnid.2493

Blood Red Arachnid.2493

I bet you thought this was a question thread, didn’t you? Hah! I bring answers!

Now, if you are like me, then you’re an awesome person. Congratulate yourself on that fact. But also, you are probably wondering about the new Viper set. It is a set of Power, Condition Damage, Precision, and Expertise Armor. Expertise being a new stat that affects condition duration, and increases duration by 1% for every 15 points of expertise.

However, I must shatter your hopes and dreams now. You are not like me. Because if you were like me, then you would’ve put the work in to analyze these sets. Exotic Level:

Full Armor: 357 Power, 357 Condition Damage, 196 Precision, 196 Expertise
2-handed weapon Weapon: 205 Power, 205 Condition Damage, 113 Precision, 113 Expertise
1-handed Weapon: 102 Power, 102 Condition Damage, 56 Precision, 56 Expertise

You probably knew all that. But, the black diamond stats are a bit more elusive:

Exquisite Black Diamond Jewel: 20 Power, 20 Condition Damage, 60 Precision, 60 Expertise
Orichalcum Black Diamond Ring: 77 Power, 77 Condition Damage, 42 Precision, 42 Expertise
Orichalcum Black Diamond Earring: 64 Power, 64 Condition Damage, 35 Precision, 35 expertise
Orichalcum Black Diamond Amulet: 102 Power, 102 Condition Damage, 56 Precision, 56 Expertise

Now, as I don’t know of any exotic level viper’s backkpiece, I"m substituting in a rabid back piece + Exquisite Black Diamond Jewel. This is without runes and sigils.

A full set is 1066 Power, 1096 Condition Damage, 600 Precision, 579 Expertise. Compare that to sinister, which is 878 Power, 899 Precision, and 1289 condition damage. But lets put these numbers into a more readable manner:

Sinsiter Set:
1878 Power
46.8% Crit chance
1289 Condition Damage
1.23 Crit Mod
2317 Effective Power
99 Bleed Damage
331 Burn Damage
111 Poison Damage
55 and 130 Confusion Damage
74 Torment Damage

Viper’s Set:
2066 Power
32.5% Crit Chance
1096 Condition Damage
1.1625 Crit Mod
2401 Effective Power
38.6% Condition Duration
88 Bleed Damage
301 Burn Damage
99 Poison Damage
48, 118 Confusion Damage
65 Torment Damage

That extra condition duration is what makes the set. In the long run, Viper’s effectively does 38.6% more damage than listed with each of its conditions. I’m not going to do the math, because I am assuming you can see it is plainly more than Sinister. The Viper set has higher effective power (that is, direct damage), and higher overall condition damage, making it superior to Sinister in most ways.

Terrified at the thought of having to buy a new set, you are probably stammering and trying to come up with a variety of excuses to say why it is Sinister is better than Viper. Well, with just the base level exotic stats, that is as close as Sinister is going to get to Viper. For example, if you were to give max might to both sets, then you would get the following:

Sinister:
3232 Effective Power
144 Bleed Damage

Viper:
3273 Effective Power
133 Bleed Damage.

An observant person would note that the difference between condition damage is static: it is 11 points per bleed. So, the 38.6% increase in duration cannot be compensated for.

“But our sets already have some condition duration!” you scream, horrified as your reality melts before my awesome logic. “If I have condition duration already, then I won’t need Vipers!”. Well… you probably still do.

I decided to make an equation to check how much condition duration would be needed for Sinister to surpass Viper. It works something like this:

Sinister Bleed Damage x (1 + Condition Duration) = Viper Bleed Damage x (1.39 + Condition Duration).

You can substitute in any condition you want. I’m going to put in bleed

99 x (1 + Dur) = 88 x (1.39 + Dur)
9/8 x (1 + Dur) = 1.39 + Dur
9/8 + 9/8 Dur = 1.39 + Dur
1/8 Dur = 0.265
Dur = 2.12

Yes, fear my mighty maffs! Tremble before Algebra! Anyway, what that 2.12 means is that your total additional condition duration must be 212% from traits/runes/sigils before Sinister does the same condition damage as Viper. The more might you add, the larger this percentage gets, because the difference in condition damage between the two sets is always a static number.

Normally I would just say “Run Viper you fool!” and be done with it. But, there is an asterisk here. Or there might be. I’m not sure. Anyway, the issue is that condition duration is capped at 100%. Or it might be. This means that, although Sinister can never truly match viper in condition damage, Viper becomes redundant after that 100% threshold is hit. This is… actually quite hard to do. For Viper’s to start becoming redundant, you need to have 61.4% condition duration from traits/runes/sigils. And specifically condition duration, not just stuff like Lingering Curses. Now this threshold is quite achievable for certain classes, with rune bonuses hitting 45% and Rare Veggie Pizza bumping it up to 65%. Meaning that you would switch out a few pieces of Viper Gear for Sinister.

The reason for this is Sinister’s secret weapon: non-cooldown influenced crit procs! The effective power between the two sets is close enough that it isn’t too big a deal, but Sinister at base will proc crits 44% more often than Vipers (27% under fury). This is only important for procs without cooldowns, however, and these procs usually don’t make up a large portion of condition damage. Because of the low overall influence of crit based procs, the duration from viper outranks the crit proc from sinister. But, if your duration is scraping the threshold of redundancy, then you should start swapping out Black Diamonds for Charged Ambrite.

There is a small caveat, though. Viper gear affects all conditions, including disabling ones that don’t necessarily do damage. Most builds can only get near 100% condition duration with a single kind of condition, let alone all of them. But with Viper’s, you can get 100% in all of them. Just use x 2 Trapper rune (10%), x 4 nightmare Rune (15%), Sigil of Malice (10%), Rare Veggie Pizza (20%), and Toxic Focusing Crystal (10%), and in a full viper set you will achieve 103.6% condition duration in every condition. If you have things that boost conditions like Signet of Midnight, you can start knocking off bonuses and mats and put them in other places.

So unless you are running a mono-condi build with a lot of crit procs, Viper is going to be your go-to condi set. It does more direct damage, it does more condi damage, it is more versatile. As such, it is better to build. The more fury and might you add, the better Viper gets. And to be frank, I’m not even sure swapping out to Sinister pieces is even the best way to build at the 100% threshold, as there is always the option of changing the build around to have less condi duration bonuses in other places. Change out Sigil of Malice for Sigil of Bursting, for example.

If conditions aren’t capped at 100%, then Viper is better than Sinister in every case except primarily non-cooldown crit dependent builds, to which I can’t think of an example.

Tl:dr RUN VIPER YOU FOOL!

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Why doesn't ANET want people doing dungeons ?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Here’s a quick explanation why. Let’s imagine for a second that they didn’t nerf dungeons. This means that ANet would have 2 choices:

1) They do nothing. In this case, players are incentivized to farm dungeons since they provide so much gold and XP. While some players would enjoy this, most would feel like they were being pushed to farm old content, despite a new expansion being made available.

2) They make HoT content reward better than dungeons. This would be the economic equivalent of power creep and would result in inflation.

Nerfing dungeon rewards allow devs to incentivize new, fresh content to players while avoiding inflation to the economy.

You don’t.

use the gear icon at the top of the mission panel, tell it you only want to recieve pve missions. At the next reset and from there on you will only ever receive pve missions.

Many of the easy/medium ones are totally soloable, and for the rest keep in mind if you have the mission active and are eligible for credit (e.g. tagged the bounty, rand the race course at least once, etc.) your guild will receive full credit.

What’s more, because these missions cost nothing to attempt, don’t require unlocking anything, and can be repeated as many times as you like, it is actually far easier to get rewarded for doing them than before.
