Race/professions – pick some combo you like the look of and go with it.
Aurora Glade is a pretty good EU server if you’re looking at EU servers.

Both Ele and Mesmer are good for WvW so honestly take your pick.

Ele has some nice roaming builds and is good for group play (large AoE’s, fields to blast etc).

Mesmer good for roaming and small group play. Depending on how the commander utilises mesmer’s I’d say they’re in a good place in larger groups as well.

You say you’ve played every class which did you prefer the feeling of? My general advice would be play both until say level 15 or 20 see which you’re enjoying most and go with that.

Sword is a mainhand weapon. And no they’re not stronger with bows. It’s weird but works out that sword is one of our strongest weapons.

You’re looking at as ranger = ranged class but ranger is more to do with the fact that they wander over a particular(ly large) area.

EDIT – Also as GuzziHero says if you go to Ebonhawke please do not attack the chickens. It’s good fun the first time but after that it’s not cool.

Do you have the vista’s, PoI’s and skill points from the area’s you’ve explroed? If not I’d advise you grab those as well. Also harvest everything you run past (if you don’t intend to craft you can always sell the materials). If you can get some low level food as well that will help as it give’s you +10% exp from kills.

With my Ranger I prefer Sword/X (X being dagger, axe or warhorn depending on where I am) but it can take a while to get used to. You can use bows pretty much everywhere. You also have the option of Greatsword and Shortbow. If you’re enjoying playing with Axes then stick with them (off hand axe is great!).

Everyday (or almost everyday) for me. Just got my first precursor and just got into WvW so they’re my two goals at the moment.

Honestly you’ve just described an Engineer (apart from the magical part of course). I’d advise you try it out. Try running a few Elixirs and a kit or two to mix the support/damage you’re asking for. Possibly something like this (btw no idea about PvE traits. My Engineer is built for WvW so the traits are rather different.) -

No I haven’t changed them around yet. I’ve thought about it but not sure how I’d lay them out yet. My F1-F4 are also quite small but I’ve gotten use to where they are so hitting them is quite easy.
Does your mouse have multiple buttons? You could try binding the F1 – F4 skills to 1 to 4 and put the 1 – 4 skills on the mouse buttons. Or put the F1-F4 buttons on the mouse. Play around with what’s more comfortable to you.

Most all classes are welcome anywhere else but PvE dungeons. I don’t even do them myself because if you read the forums, dungeon runners are generally completely rabid and elitist about their groups. If you’re not full berserker, best spec for your party, and one of the highest dps classes, they don’t want you there.

I’d disagree with this. I don’t run any meta builds (knowingly) and very few bits of beserker armor and I run some dungeons most days. Just make your own LFG and ask for people like yourself. In my case it’s “PX any welcome”.

No worries Mesmer has other weapons. Sword for melee with Sword/Focus/Torch off hands, Scepter for ranged with Sword/Focus/Torch off hands or Staff as another ranged weapon. I personally prefer Sword/Sword with second set as Scepter/Focus. When traited focus offers some nice reflect skills.

Can’t help you with the Ele issue as I love swapping between attunements on my Double Dagger Ele. Place a fire field, swap to earth, blast with skill #4 to get some might then attack.

With my Staff Ele I am lazier. It usually involves place Lava Font, drop Meteor Shower, watch critters die, but when needed I can be more focused.

I know this probably isn’t what you’re looking for but for open world PvE – any of them really. Which one do you like the look of best? That’s the one you should choose.

I love all of my Scholar Professions. Necro is really good fun to play and has a load of health; Ele is brilliant for just nuking everything in sight and Mesmer has some really nice utilities and some fun weapons (mainhand sword is awesome!).

All 3 are welcome in WvW as well so choose which you like the look of best and go with that one.

Personally I love Necro it’s one of my favourite classes.

With regards to dungeons it depends. If you’re going to aim to speedrun dungeons then Necro isn’t overly desired unless the group know you know how to play it really well. If you’re gonna run more casual dungeons then yeah bring your Necro along. They’re great fun.

Which region are you in? Dungeon groups can be made up of players from any server in a region (NA or EU – but not cross region) so that’s not the biggest issue.

I can’t speak for NA servers as I’m EU but for open world PvE and events I’d choose from -

Aurora Glade (Good PvE community. Don’t always get the events done but a good server. Coincidentally also the server I’m on so maybe I’m biased :-P )
Desolation (probably the best PvE server. Do all the events very regularly but a lot of people guest there so you may not get into main all the time)
Gandara (Similar to AG for PvE from what I can tell, but rather full at the moment due to a large influx of WvW players)
Gunnars Hold (Similar to AG for PvE from what I can tell).

I think the download is around 25GB but I’m sure someone can clarify this point better than me.

No not really. As long as you’ve learned how to play that profession along the way which you should have.

Largely depends on your playstyle. If you want to be the best and fastest then yeah DPS all the way. If you’re more chilled about stuff then you can get away with losing some to other stats like condition damage. Although conditions aren’t amazing in PvE they can be fun.

Once again not really. I got bored and took a party of Elementalists into a dungeon. There are videos of Minion Mancer dungeon runs (all 5 players are Necromancers with Minions). It is possible to finish all the content with any party make up. Whether a party is optimal is a different matter entirely.

I also meant that for example, in TERA you have easy professions such as Berzerker, which has a kitten axe which not also blocks a ton of dmg but deals quite a bit of it. But you also have a Slayer which has a kitten sword but you need a lot of mobility and to time your jumps to avoid monster’s skills because you can’t tank at all, you can’t afford to take 3-4 swings of a kitten monster because you’ll die.

I know sorcerers and magical professions are usually physycally weak, but yeah i was wondering which is the easiest profession to begin with, who is the Berzerker and Slayer of GW2.

I’m sorry i keep mentioning TERA, but it’s the comparison i can make.

No worries about TERA. Unfortunately I’ve not played so can’t really compare but I wouldn’t say that magical professions are overly weak in this game. Necromancer has one of the highest health pools and can take a few hits. Mesmer and Elementalist both have access to some very nice utilities to help keep them alive. That and anything in front of a good Elementalist will usually die before it get’s the chance to cause any issues. Saying that the first few levels with any profession can be terrible but Elementalist and Mesmer can be especially troubling. Until you learn to dodge you’re likely to die a few times.

My advice would be have a look at the professions when you load up the game and see which you like the look of best then go with that.

Also Melanie’s points above are very good when it comes to comparisons.

Questing is based around your Personal Storyline and Dynamic Events. The story line is closer to traditional quests (go to place X and do something) whereas dynamic events just pop up on the map as you’re running around (but still contain the kill X monsters and bring me X items).

Solo play is fine and you should be ok. When you’re first starting out you may need a little help (generally just ask in map chat) but otherwise you should be ok.

Profession and races. Which ones look good to you? Pick whatever combo you like and go with it. One thing to note. There is no dedicated trinity of Tank/Healer/DPS in this game. All professions have a dedicated self heal and as you progress you’ll unlock utility skills some of which are support, some damage, some healing. When you’ve chosen a profession have a look at the profession specific subforum for more advice.

XP – I’m assuming you’re doing the personal story as you progress (if not it will help) so my advice would be do to include gathering and crafting into your completion. You should easily be of an appropriate level for the next zone that way. Also use consumables (food/sharpening stones/oils) and boosters and it’ll help a lot.

Ranger was my first character and is my main PvE character and I love it. Unfortunately Longbow damage is lacklustre (for want of a better description) so I would recommend Sword/X (I use Dagger but Horn is good as well as it has a blast finisher) or Greatsword with a bow as a back up if you like it. If you’re going to play WvW then yeah Longbow isn’t a bad idea just watch out for Guardians and Mesmers with reflection. It can easily wipe you out.
The main reason people have an issue with Rangers is dungeons when they sit at 1500 range without being truly beneficial to the team (no boon sharing, no rez assistance, causing certain abilities to activate on bosses). If you like a Ranger play a Ranger. They are good fun.

The Train in Queensdale is basically hopping between 4 or 5 champs to earn loot and gold. As a lower level player I’d advise to avoid it (it’s your choice of course but I find it can burn you out quite quickly). If you come across an event you think you’ll need help with then call it out in map chat. Someone will most likely come and help you. Also it may be beneficial to find a guild. They’ll be able to help a bit more as they’ll most likely have newer members or members with alts that need levelling and can join you.

You get 5 weapon skills (so 10 skills for everyone but Elementalist and Engineer who get 20 and 5 – 25 respectively). You then get 1 healing skill, 3 utilities and 1 elite (unlocked at level 30). The utilities and elite skills are a combination of offensive, defensive and support depending on what build you decide on and what utilities you want to use.

Also every profession has access to their own special abilities on F1 – F4 which can be improved through traits.

I agree and disagree with OP. I feel that it would be a bad idea to make Behe a ramped up encounter and it isn’t too bad as an intro to world bosses. However I do feel that it would be worthwhile to put something in, say Kessex Hills, that requires a bit more co-ordination to prepare people for later bosses like Teq or the Wurm.

For example you have the big nasty (whatever it may be) and at 50% health it goes invulnerable and you have to use a turret/mortar/weapon (like the pact bazooka from the Claw fight) on it to remove the buff. There would be clear instructions about this as well. NPC shouts it out. Big yellow writing on the screen and in the chat box. This would introduce players to a mechanic used later and would make a (in theory) semi interesting encounter as opposed to run up and stab it in the foot (although I do love stab it in the foot as well).

1. No. Take some people with you to show you the mechanics (there’s a dungeon teaching thread around here somewhere) and it will become a lot clearer.

2. Yup dungeons work the same here. You get armor and such from drops and doing explorable mode gives you tokens to buy armor and weapons.

3. This dungeon can be a bit of a shock the first time you walk in straight out of PvE. Especially if you’re trying to 3 man it at level 40. I’d say there is a L2P element. You need to learn the mechanics (i.e. don’t open all the caskets at once in the first room. Bad idea that.). Once again I’d suggest you find the teaching thread in this forum and poke one of the tutors in your region.

Currently working on upgrading to Tier 4 on AG. Also expanding to a minor presence in WvW.

I’d say Knight’s would be a better choice than Valkyrie’s as it has precision. Valkyrie looks nice and up’s your crit damage but if you’re critical chance isn’t high enough to take advantage of that then it’s kinda useless.

If you move worlds your guild will have no upgrades on the new world. Unless you already have members on that world that are earning influence and building upgrades.

Which from these three would you choose? Asura or Charr
And if you have chosen one of the three, who and why? I have both an Asuran and a Charr Ele. Charr because I thought it would be fun to run around as a squishy mage whilst most Charr’s I see are hulking Warriors or Guardians. Asura because I think Asura are awesome.

You could upgrade charged cores in the mystic forge. I’m not 100% on where you can farm them from but you can buy them from the TP for around 70 silver. You’ll need 2 to make one Lodestone.

Ah sorry no I thought you wanted help to get all those achievements done. My bad.

Some things that have helped me -

Learning to dodge – very useful
Gathering – gather everything you can. It get’s you experience and can help with crafting
Crafting – crafting should be something useful for your class (ie Warrior then weaponsmith and armorsmith is a good start)
Class – Pick something you like the look of and go with that

Guild’s can be a big help when starting out. If you’re EU based hit me up in game and I’ll be happy to answer anything you need to know/take you around a bit and show you some things.

Edit – Something I missed – which ever class you do go for try out all the weapons before you make a firm choice on whether you enjoy it or not.

The explorer achievements are for uncovering parts of the map. For example in Shiverpeaks I’m guessing it’ll be something like forsaken halls in Dredgehaunt Cliffs. Basically you need ot “unmist” all the areas.

You can get the giant drill. Just swim up to it on the surface. Don’t swim into the drill that ends badly. Other ones it could be are the Aetherblade JP in Gendarran, the Marionette one or one of the others introduced through the living story.

Ele’s are very good but require a bit more concentration to play (swapping between elements to get the best out of combo fields and such). Thieves are very squishy but can hit quite hard.

You have 5 character slots. Pick a class you like the look of and create a new character and play it. If you decide you don’t like it then create a new one. No one can tell you which will be the best character for you. YOU have to try them to find out. So my advice? You’re not enjoying your Ele? Then start a new character. Pick a class and race you like the look of and play it. If you don’t like it delete and start again until you find something you enjoy.

As you liked Healers/Ranged DPS then I’ll second mercury’s suggestion of Elementalist. Water Attunement heals allies and damages foes, Fire and Earth do damage and Wind does something else (I just use it for speed and possibly to daze enemies).

2. What Garambola said. Pick a class you like the look of and go from there.

4. I haven’t found it grindy at all and I have 9 characters. Your experience may vary of course.
