Unfortunately I wasn’t a massive fan of Thief or Engi so I’ll be a little biased towards Ranger as it’s the only class I can really talk about -
1) I enjoy the mobility and aesthetics of Ranger. The skills look good and because I use main hand sword, offhand dagger I’m constantly rolling and leaping all over the battlefield. My biggest complaint would be that Sword skill1 roots you but there are work arounds (turning off auto attack was a godsend for me). I like how the axe hit’s multiple targets and offhand axe is pretty awesome. It’s just a shame the damage from main hand axe is a little lack lustre.
I’d also add to this that the pet can be a big turn off as you do need to micromanage it. You will need to put it on passive/stow it at times, recall it before it get’s AoE’d into oblivion, tell it to attack etc. I quite enjoy it but you do need to pay attention to it. Also swap before it dies. Otherwise you’ll be losing a lot.
2) Because I largely run with my guild I can’t really comment, but no one seems to complain about me (to my face) when I use the LFG tool for dungeons and such.
3) Gotta say I feel mainly useful. I do enough damage to help the team, offer out some buffs, can help to blast fields for extra buffs as needed and have a good heal skill which is helpful to my party/allies.
i didn’t know i am screaming, how can you tell?
I read it in Samuel L’s voice. Don’t you? It makes everything about 20% cooler.
Unfortunately no. I have Freeman Paracusia – http://xkcd.com/462/
Here’s the recipe for how to infuse a ring – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Infused_equipment
I’m currently running mid teen Fractals just using the versatile infusions mentioned above until I can get hold of enough mist essence to create an infused ring.
The versatile infusion can go into any infusion slot (doesn’t need to be an infused item).
Yes there is an incentive to do it at an appropriate level. It gives you access to better gear for your level and helps to level you up quite quickly.
Loot is based on your level so a level 80 will get loot more geared towards a level 80. And yes you will get more EXP but it’ll be the same percentage. Completing a dungeon path gives you 70% exp for your next level. Evidently at level 80 this will be higher.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Experience#Mechanics – this explains the amount of exp you get
we lose the Scale of Guildwars with all these WayPoints..
if we had mounts we would truely see how big and wide this world map is.
no more silly instant teleporting waypoints.
make people use mounts and stop being lazy.
But I already know it’s kinda large. I’ve run around the map on a couple of characters. Took a while.
If you don’t want to use waypoints you don’t have to. You can just run around as you want.
Also as the world is all instanced how annoying would it be to mount up ride to the next map sit through the loading screen, mount up again, ride on again to the next map, sit through another loading screen, rinse and repeat. For me that would get pretty tiresome pretty quickly.
Also you can buy WvW levels for laurels and a few badgers of honor, so you don’t even really need to play that much WvW.

Legendary – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Legendary
Ascended – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascended_equipment
If you stopped playing around New Years then you probably came across some of the Living World stuff from Season 1. Tower of Nightmares, Flame and Frost, Bazaar of the Four Winds etc. More details can be found here – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Living_World
Crossaber means fine quality staff. Different quality levels are marked with different colours.
White = Basic
Blue = Fine
Green = Masterwork
Yellow = Rare
Orange = Exotic
Pink = Ascended
Purple = Legendary
Great idea in theory but I don’t know how well that works in practice, I was party leader and near the end of Arah Storymode lost connection, as in total game client crash and shut down. But when I logged in again I could just rejoin my party in Arah, they hadn’t been kicked out just because the party leader (me) had. Correct me if I’m wrong though, but the leader disconnecting would surely be like the leader getting kicked by the other party members?
Not really because you’re still part of the party. When you DC or crash (or even just straight log out) you’re left in the party you were in for around 5 minutes or so (not sure the exact time frame), so as long as you log back in with in that time frame you’ll still be in your party and will be able to re-join your instance.
i don’t think there is a time frame
When people I’ve been partied with have logged out, after a while they get auto-kicked from parties I’m in (assuming we don’t remove them first to make room) that’s why I said there was a time frame. Honestly not sure what it is though. Of course it could have just been other party members removing the ones who have logged off and I’m just not paying attention.

I read it to mean actual regions such as NA/EU. So if I’m partied up with a friend from NA I can’t click “join in…” with them and vice versa.
Hmm, to me, at least using the preview mode, it seems as if the handle and the blade itself isn’t long enough to meet the nodachi standards, but that’s just my impression. To me, the logical explanation of why the katana/nodachi is on the back of the character when stowed is because they’re both used as two-handed weapons in general therefore the sword is being categorized as Greatsword.
Whilst I agree that the handle doesn’t look long enough, for me when stowed the blade does look long enough. It’s a conundrum. I like to think it is a Nodachi simply because it’s worn on the back. But hey that’s just me :-P
What winterchillz said is correct but can I add that the other sword Musashi generally used in his off hand was a Wakazashi which is a shortened version of the regular Katana.
To equate them to western swords (as in the closest ones with regards to size) Wakizashi = Short Sword, Katana = Long Sword, Nodachi/Odachi (the one pictured above) = Claymore or kitten Sword (due to the filter think illegitimate son).

Don’t worry I walked out of Wayfarer’s into Frostgorge Sound (70 – 80) on my level 20 once. I can safely say I did not hang around there for long.
No the information is correct but it seems that you went through the wrong exit. There are 2 exits from Hoelbrak one south leading into Dredgehaunt Cliffs (level 40 – 50 zone http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dredgehaunt_Cliffs ) and one to the east leading into Wayfarer’s Foothills (level 1 – 15 http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Wayfarer_Foothills )
And btw. the Concordia Waypoint is not flickering like those in Brisban.
Perhaps only the ones that are being used to help the vines travel at the moment are the ones that are flickering. The vines are draining the power from them (or the ley line) to help them grove/move across the land.
Yeah you shouldn’t have a problem with that.
Yes rangers are ok with Sword/Torch. Sword/Warhorn, Sword/Dagger or Sword/Axe would probably be better though. Warhorn gives you a blast finisher for might and grants fury. Dagger gives you an extra evade. Axe offers a reflect and a pull.
All classes are fine for running dungeons, although in highly optimized groups some classes, like Necro, are less desirable.
Twilight Arbor Up and Forward. The paths are named slight differently in TA.
LMAO! That’s exactly what I was thinking of when I typed that.
I wonder how many get the reference.
I was going to add the comment but you beat me to it…..
Other attributes can be found here -
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats#Level_80_exotic_equipment
They range from full offensive stats (Berserker’s, Assassin’s etc.) to largely defensive stats (the new stat Nomad’s comes to mind).
With regards to Shout I’m guessing you referring to a Shout Heal Warrior. Basically the build involves using two traits from that Tactics line, Lung Capacity and Vigorous Shouts -
Welcome to the game honvas.
Guardian probably has a better spot in all three game modes but I love my Ranger.
Ranger – In PvE they’re in an ok place. Enjoyable to play with some fun weapons. PvP they seem to be less desired than they were but I understand they’re not too bad in hotjoin stuff. WvW is where we fall down a bit. We’re good for Solo roaming but not so much in small/large groups.
Guardian – They’re pretty good all around. I only really play Guardian in WvW where they’re pretty strong.
Aurora Glade is a really good server. If you’re interested then my guild is always recruiting. Message me in game or on here if you’re interested.
Depends what you think is boring. There’s no real vertical gear progression (apart from Ascended) so if you’re looking for that it’s not really here. There are however plenty of skins but obtaining them can be difficult as they’re usually random drops.
Yes PvP is active. And yes you’ll need some skill which you’ll pick up over time.
WvW is probably easier to explain if you find a guild and they can take you in and show you what’s going on.
Crafting wise then for Guardian I’d say Armorsmith and Weaponsmith and for Ranger I’d say Leatherworker and then either Huntsman, Chef or Jeweler.
I don’t really get the last question. No it’s not dead and I always see people around but I’m usually zone hopping for different reasons (gathering, world bosses etc.) so I either see people doing the same or just glimpse them as I run by.
1. If you really want to/feel the need. As LeoWolfish pointed out you could always try and help organise your own WvW a bit more, be that by making a WvW guild or joining an existing one. Have you tried getting involved with your community site? http://fow.guildlaunch.com/
2. If you chose to move then I’d like to recommend Aurora Glade. We’re good fun, have a nice community to run with in WvW, and our queues are low to non-existent.
The blindness or the stability/other boons both sound good. Not really too fussed what it does. I just want the Llama!
summarize in a few sentences please not too long
much appreciated.
- A Sylvari went crazy
- Gathered a load of bad guys
- We killed ‘em
- The Sylvari made some fancy weapons then blew up Lion’s Arch
- We killed the Sylvari
- Somewhere amongst the chaos at the end a dragon woke up
My advice? Log into some different places. Remember a rotating cog amasses no sporophyte.
so basically in the 2 years this game has bin out you guys havent gotten any type of new content ?
No we’ve had content. A lot of it was temporary though and not everyone enjoyed that. The easiest way for you to decide whether you’ll enjoy the game is to log on and play. You’ve already bought it so you may as well.
Also on July the first Living Story season 2 begins which is going to introduce some permanent content in the form of the journal and possibly other things. As nothing has been really confirmed we can’t definitely tell you what will or will not be released.
P.S. – If you want to know about the updates we’ve had you can read about them here – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates
1) Yes it is entirely possible to do PvE only. Although if you feel the latency isn’t too bad then it may be worth checking out the PvP aspects as they can be quite good fun.
2) Armor and weapons you can largely get by on drops at the start but crafting is also a good way to get items. Also for completing hearts (quests) you can purchase gear for karma (another in game currency).
3) This is quite subjective. If when you get to level 80 you want to be entirely optimal then yes there are builds out there that advocate certain weapons for certain situations. The other side of that is use what you’re comfortable with and enjoy. It largely comes down to your play style really.
4) Sell junk (broken lockpicks etc.) to vendors. If you don’t intend to craft then gather materials and sell them on the trading post. Otherwise it’s really at your discretion as to whether you sell gear you acquire. It’s probably more beneficial to salvage most of them and use the luck on yourself and collect/sell the materials you get from them.
Lastly yes they all make sense :-P
Hey welcome to the game.
Firstly I’d point you to these two stickered threads -
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide
They offer some pretty good advice for the game (although I think some of it maybe a little out of date). Possibly the best advice I could offer is get used to moving whilst in combat and learn to dodge.
With regards to characters and classes then there are no restrictions. Pick a class and race combo you like the look of and go with it. Each Race does have it’s own racial abilities but generally class abilities are better.
Good luck and if you’re on an EU server then message me in game when I’m online and I’ll try to help out if I can.

A TLDR for that link; Fought some critters, fought an insane Sylvari, accidently woke up a Dragon.
There have been some nice QoL changes (like the wallet) and a some cool content additions (Fractals and Edge of the Mist spring to mind) but you should be fine jumping back in.
Some big changes were made on April 15th and possibly the one that will affect you the most is the trait changes. I’d advise you read up on traits here – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait
Whether it’s worth coming back is really up to you. I’d say yes as Living Story Season 2 starts July the 1st and it could be quite interesting.
That makes me a little sick tbh. I mean, you already have to level almost half way to max before you can even assign traits, and now even more barriers, even more gold sinks?
Thanks for the answer though.
You can get them for free just for wandering around the world and doing things. When you click on the trait line if you hover over the spyglass it will tell you exactly what thing unlocks the traits. Me and my guild just went around unlocking some of the low level easy ones. It was quite fun.
This link will also explain how to unlock each trait – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait_guide
snip And ofc, there are some kick-kitten rangers out there. But you won’t see them carrying bows.
I carry a bow. It’s around slot 38 in my inventory. Slot 39 is my Short bow. They just seem to gather dust…….
its just not a face roll class
Seconded!
Unless they add some new ranged class, you will se rangers with bows. You won’t change something that has been always present for past 20 or so years.
I started playing DnD before Gw2 and my DnD Ranger uses two swords. He also rides a Bear but that’s entirely different.
[BAD] is still recruiting. We’ve acquired some new members recently and we’re more awesome than ever. Come and join us for fun a frolics in Tyria.
They’ve changed the way traits works and number 11 is no longer valid.
Trait points now become available at level 30. If you click on the traitline the traits are listed down the left hand side. If you hover over the spy glass it will tell you how to unlock them. You can either do a certain thing in the world (JP’s, events, mini dungeons, dungeons etc.) or buy them from the trait trainer.
This explains how traits now work – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Traits
With regards to the second part I’m not sure sorry.
From the patch notes on Tuesday 20/05 -
“Standing with the supply box traders near the docks in the Labyrinthine Cliffs is an asuran merchant who accepts spare piles of Blade Shards in exchange for Equipment Bags, each containing a piece of masterwork or better gear. "
Wiki is your friend. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Game_updates
snip but I won’t let that stop me from supporting where needed. I am definitely going to try engineer first though since I’m a fan of building stuff to kill stuff in games. snip
Engineer may suit you actually. It has quite a few utility skills that offer worthwhile support (buffs, condition cleanse, group healing etc.) whilst still being able to do damage.
Yesterday I had my first real MegaServer experience (I mainly PvP and WvW) in the Pavilion.
And for some reason more or less every single guild or commander in that map were from my server, Aurora Glade.
So clearly the system DOES take server and such into account, despite what people in this thread seems to claim.
I’m also from AG and I generally end up in a mainly AG related map (not tried the pavilion yet though). Perhaps the system just really likes us and our server? I mean I can understand why….. :-P
Staff Ele with signet of air equipped. The signet gives you a 25% speed boost and staff is a good ranged weapon with plenty of AoE attacks.
You don’t ask how to casual. You are casual. You owe no one nothing. You are like a ghost. No one can touch you. You do what you want when you want exactly how long you want. You have no needs and no fears, you simply are.
Pretty sure you just described Batman….
I went with option 11 as I would like options 1, 2, 4 (if it’s enjoyable), 6, 7 and 10.
Options 3, 8 and 9 I could take or leave and I don’t really play PvP enough for 5 to affect me.
They are all fun. Try them all.
This advice right here.
Thank you all for your suggestions =) obviously I asked the question incorrectly but you tried to answer. I suppose I’m too old school, and as such can’t really grasp the concept of there being no trinity of heal/tank/dps. I can’t even imagine a dungeon run without it. All I can picture is a solo game where you happen to be in the same area as others lol. To help, perhaps I should ask… If classes can all heal themselves, all do good damage, all melee, and there are no tanks, what makes each one different? Just visual aesthetic?
No they all bring different things to the table. A couple of examples -
The condition blind causes the next outgoing attack to miss. The Thief has some of the best blind skills in the game and can help to prevent party members from being hit whilst also doing damage.
Guardian, Mesmer and to a lesser extent Engineers offer reflection. This nullifies all incoming projectile based damage and reflects it to the originator. Once again protects party members and causes damage.
You’ll understand it all a bit more when you get in the game and have played through for a bit.
As you get 5 character slots at the start I’m gonna be a bit off the wall and suggest a few based on your criteria
Necessary Criteria:
- Ranged DPS -
I prefer my damage to be single target and sustained.
It can be DoT or direct. An aoe or 2 would be nice =)
I’m gonna suggest Engineer for this one. Grenade kit pretty much does what you want here.
- Survivability -
For groups, the class needs to be able to pull threat and either live via some mechanic or take at least one punch in the face while the tank recovers it. I hate running away.
For solo, I need to either have a pet or reliably face tank.
I prefer steady grinds over burst kills with downtime.
Again, I hate running away, so I prefer not to kite
unless it’s on a big nasty “you shouldn’t be able to solo this” kind of monster.
As pointed out above there’s no tank in this game but I’m gonna suggest Warrior or Guardian here. Warrior has solid defences and health (and certain skills provide you with a block), Guardian has access to Aegis which provides you and your team with a free block.
- Health/mana control -
I like to have control over my personal health and mana bars.
This can be either through health to mana or mana to health conversions, or via abilities that I can use that replenish either my health or mana. Preferrably an ability for each.
No mana or healers. Each class has it’s own self heals and group heals are poor at best, but for here I’m going to suggest Engineer or Elementalist.
- Utility -
This is not to be mistaken for support. I define utility as some ability that I can use situationally to change an outcome or make life easier. This can be any number of things including crowd control, wipe recovery, party teleports, et cetera. Support on the other hand, has to do with the application of buffs or debuffs. I feel neutral about buffs I can provide, and I downright hate applying debuffs.
All classes can provide CC to some extent or other. All can apply buffs and debuffs (and generally will whilst attacking). Party portals are done by Mesmer’s so for this one I’ll suggest Mesmer.
Each dungeon has a story mode and an explorable mode. So for AC the story is level 30, explorable is level 35. For explorable there are 3 paths you can chose from near the start.
This table should pretty much explain the level requirements – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeon#List_of_dungeons
You don’t even have to kill the burrows, just protect the collectors.
But I like killing burrows……
And we did memorize the order of the first 9 burrows(we didn’t get past 9), they still swarmed 4 enemies each before we could kill them, and spawned too quickly, with each one having a remarkable killing power. Memorizing their order didn’t help. We also had frostbow and fire greatsword, neither made any difference(all four team members had control of them at some point.)
I’m going to bed now that physics is finished. Hopefully a later attempt will do better than my first. I’ll check up once on this next time I try to see if anyone has ideas on the 15 burrows.
You don’t need to kill the mobs. Just the burrows. You also need to kill them quickly, hence why it’s easier when you know where they are going to spawn.
Frostbow really should make a difference. I’ve done it with 4 frostbows and we killed the burrows so quickly I had time to get a drink before it the whole thing was finished. I’ve also done it no frostbows and and no decent melee options and we’ve only just scraped through it.
However my bigger problem is with the hoard of bugs defending those machines the NPC sets up. How could we have handled that?
Conjure Frostbow → Skill 4 → ??? → Profit!
It helps if you know the order the burrows spawn to kill them off. This will come with time. And if you don’t know then more experienced players can call them out. It’s what I do when running with newer players.
Best advice would be – if you like the look of a profession then try that one. I personally prefer Ranger (with Necro being close behind).
Both Necro and Ranger are good for what you’re looking for so you should be fine with either.
Engineer sounds like it may be the best fit for you.
They have decent ranged damage (traited grenade kits), decent support (elixir’s for boons and stealth) and do ok in PvE and WvW.
And me! Don’t forget me!
