you know? if it was free i would be disappointed. i want to pay money for an expansion just to reward the working class, you know, the people coding all that we do
rytlock is the chuck norris of tyria
or… an asura did it^^
just like it happens everyday in this messed up reality
it look like the heritage armor set that you get from hall of monuments if you linked your account from gw1
yeah everybody dies a lot in this game, no matter the build especially at low levels. every class really shine when you manage to have a full build with traits and nice gear.
there are a lot of one shot mechanics, especially from bosses and even if you think you are a tank with your guardian it’s all about dodge, kite and moving over and over. if you stay still you die
in neverwinter when you cast a ground target skill it istantly pass from mouse look to mouse target. i love how neverwinter handle combat, i would like to have this option here too
4 pvp: i think pvp is what made the gw1 brand famous… they should have stick to that formula with the awesomeness of the gw2 combat system and mechanics
that said gw2 is still a great improvement since gw1. but according to me that improvement could have been handled a lot better. they knew what feature made great gw1, there was no real reason to be different from any other mmo in the world even their own prequel
i don’t know, vabbi looked like a pretty city to me, but i never cared about cities and outposts, and of course i think cities in gw2 are much more vibrant and they have the right to be called city, where in gw1 even kamadan was just a bigger outpost…
i would lie if i say i didn’t enjoy gw2 largely and for almost a year, although overall i played gw1 more, the fact is not that gw1 was a better game, in fact i played gw1 again after gw2 and it looked awkward, you couldn’t jump and dodge and you couldn’t move while casting. and this aspect of the game play is really refreshing in gw2. although gw1 had a lot of feature that made the brand amazing that in my opinion would made gw2 even better.
so if you want to know here is what i liked about gw1 that for me would make gw2 a playable game again:
1 replayability: iliked to play some story mode more than one time when i felt too or to try to beat my record, or just because i liked them. and overall the story mission where more complex for a single player experience that most of the storyline quests in gw2. it’s personal taste i know, i started with a sylvari and i was disappointed after such a good start with every other race and the rest of the story especially after joining an order but the claw island part.
2 customization: here i mean both build wise and cosmetic wise. i’m a gamer that need to be stimulated by changes, even if self made. i don’t need the thousands skills from gw1, that was quite too much and most of the time just plain useless. but i would like the ability to change build as easily as it was in gw1, not because is needed but because it was interesting to just change game style. in gw2 if i want to change build i can and it’s not the price in resetting traits that stops me, but the need for gear to make it effective. so i feel a little restrained to the easiest build for me to play with. gw1 was great in that side, i loved the fact that i could change on the fly so easily without worrying about my armor or most of the times my weapon sets.
cosmetic wise, my only rant is that a lot of armor here in gw2 looks the same. it’s the same model with different textures. and although some armor are really nice crafted, they are only if you look at them from the front, and we look at our character from behind most of the time and they all look alike with different textures. in the end we all look the same and our gear has no story, even legendary has no story. there were mini adventures in gw1 that give you mini campaign and cosmetic reward that you could only get there, not rng lockboxes (that is just sad)
also collecting them in pve it is impossible because since they have stats we cannot have a locker like pvp and of course because they like to make us pay for transmutation stones (otherwise they would be useless).
ascended tier worsen the situation because it is a time gated tier and having multiple armors of this tier for the sake of the liberty of changing build is crazy! or it requires more time for a feature that if you look better at it in this game is useless.
if gear wise pve was more like pvp that would be for me a reason to come back despite ascended. i would welcome ascended and even more tiers if they were implemented statless and only with room for runes/sigils/infusions.
the only solution i see to this is celestial stats, but for the wrong reasons.
3 achievement and title system: and yes while there are a lot of grindy achievement in both titles, they were there to do at your own pace when you were willing to grind for it.
the temporary ones even if you don’t need them and you are not forced by anyone to complete them, if you do so they still look like a wasted opportunity (even if a useless one) but they are gone for ever after and that can be stressing, add to this the only 2 weeks before more new achievement are added and i just stop playing.
4 difficulty: it’s not acceptable for me to force it in open world where i have no choice other than play with people that are not like minded. examples: scarlet invasion. i and a lot of players like me wanted really to complete the event every time i tried because this is how i play. but a lot of other players just used the opportunity to farm. forcing other to fail. same with tequatl (not for farming) which i never tried, but i see my server managed to kill only once since release. if you create content that only high populated server can complete you are leaving low populated server even more behind (it is already sad in wvwvw, at least in pve we all should have same potential despite the numbers).
so yes i should chose when i want to play difficoult content and the people i want to play it with.
can i say that of every things i miss about gw1 cantha is not one of them? i hated it, it was claustrophobic (well not shing jea) and confusing. i absolutely loved elona, the flying carpets, the one thousand and 1 nights atmosphere… that was something really new to me… but please… cantha? the only thing i loved about cantha were some of the luxon and kurziks areas and the jade sea.
i enjoyed when in spvp thief run out of initiative trying to heartseeking me multiple times with no 2hit kills. they are used to see mesmer down in at least 2 hit. although the build i used in spvp is good only in spvp, i could defend points for very very long time agains 1 enemy, a little less against 2 and fairly short against 3, but usually enough to get my team to back me up or just to stall enemies. although in pve there are more and more things that just one hit you no matter what (mainly new bosses and gauntlet fights) although old content with good toughness and vitality allow you a good rate of survivability. never been kicked from a party or asked to ping gear in pugs, but i can tell you every kick is a waste of time for the kickers and i gladly not party with berserker zealots. (although i don’t hate berserker’s players and i used to use berserker gear in certain content)
at least on the bottom of pandora’s box there was hope
i logged to answer you.
so, the story line quest is what get your character storyline finished. it is about what you did to do greater good. it can be disappointing or epic, but that is really a matter of taste.
you’ll be most likely lv80 when you finish your story, you could even cap the level before finishing it.
although, you can’t play the story line quest only because there will be huge leaps in level requirement. and sometimes you simply will not have the level to go to the next step of your story. you can try but unless you go with some friends you’ll probably die a lot.
you can explore since day 1. exploring, even uncovering new area will grant you exp. participating in events and completing heart quests will give you exp too.
ressing people (even npc) will give you exp, and crafting (there is no quest to grab a crafting discipline, you can start 2 at your will in the main cities).
everything gives you exp but chatting.
even if you are free to roam only the main cities are risk free, outside there will be mobs and some of them (most of them) will be agressive.
so pay attention in which map you are, if you happen to be in a map higher than your level mobs could easily kill you. you can check the map level anytime pressing m.
starting maps are lv 1-15 but you can easily roam from place to place being relatively safe, especially if other players are around.
after grind wars2, click wars2 this is the funniest transmutation ever, and you didn’t pay gems for it!
i don’t think gw2 is a beta…
mabinogi with the graphic and the combat system of neverwinter
they never said it was a sand box though they advertise it as a living breathing world… i hardly noticed when it was night or day in this game…
and yes i forgot to say that is not living and breathing for my personal taste, you made it already clear that it is fine for you countless times.
for this and many more reason i’m not playing it anymore, and in time i will stop bother reading and commenting the forum… it was just a lazy morning
edit: true gw1 wasn’t a sandbox and it wasn’t even an mmo for some people. although i never had to log off to learn lore and story about the world i was playing in. if i know something about gw lore i learned it there. what i learned here is to press h and see what was asked me to do and learn nothing. just seeing at filling bars
(edited by Amadan.9451)
i don’t care about vertical progression or grinding in this specific moment.
there is no living breathing world anywhere. it is a themepark not a sandbox.
when you log in gw2 you don’t have the feeling of belonging of being part of a world living and breathing.
hell you don’t even know what scarlet is unless you log off go on the main web site and read the short story… if this is what living world means i think they failed in delivering.
the ascended gear would be fine if attached to some sort of story driven quest in order to get it, the fun, the exitement… what they did is tie it to farming and crafting and time gating just for you not to be able to have it immediatly and use your time to gain it. nobody that have it says it’s hard to get, some people doesn’t even consider it a grind. but i read of no one telling it was fun to obtain it. not a single person saying: i enjoyed so much to run again all content i already run thousands of time in a year, than click to gain one more tier of crafting and than finally craft a weapon with stats that if we are lucky will be still useful after october 15th
edit: a living breathing world in my opinion is world where:
npc don’t stand still for ever, there is weather changing in the same map over time, maps change due to season (not things that magically appear due to update event). pc can do a lot more emotes, you can interact a lot more with your surrounding (and not in a jumpy way), your class has a meaning in a group, there are stories to uncover and be told. mabinogi despite has an aweful combat system gives you the feeling of a living world so much better than guild wars that i found myself more engaged to it than i will ever be with this biweekly updates nothingness

i think you missed the point i was trying to make, they got something fixed from gw1 that i used to love in gw2, but they changed the gameplay they intended to make room in the market for just so they could sell on china too, or for some improved revenue.
i guess time will tell us which one was the right direction for the company, but i think a lot of companies proved that the market isn’t always right and the rockstar is a shiny example of that. they pushed the boundaries of legit so far and for this reason they are beloved despite every mistake they make. gtaIV has less customization for your character than gta san andreas, but people will still buy gtaV in fact the sales of gtaV were definitely better than gtaIV. and what they did was just deliver what they promised.
if gw2 had a vision of a game if their company management is wise they also should have known what kind of customers they would have. so if you think your game is niche you should cater to that niche. if you want a game to be sold in all the world pleasing everyone and satisfieing no one you should do so from the start.
i think it is unfair advertise a game in a way than change your mind because you want to sell more. at least be honest with this and say, we are changing the direction of the game because we want it to sell more. i can understand and respect that, all we get is, we want to experiment and create something different (while all we have is something very old and facebook like).
what would have happened to rockstar if they dropped their manifesto and changed gta because angry americans blamed the company for all that is evil in the world?
they would have failed miserably. instead they believed in their vision of gameplay and made billions of dollar out of their last gta!
gw1 despite being so different from any other mmo in the world lived up and still live after 7 years.
this won’t be the case for gw2
just logged in to add something since this is the main reason i don’t play the game anymore.
i believe that a challenging content is a content that you can defeat despite how hard it is even if it is the first time you do it (without dulfy or any other player spoiling the fight or the puzzle). you can defeat it because while you play you are able to figure out what to do in order to beat it. not because you died and the next time you memorize when to do something so you don’t die again.
for example all the bosses in the game dante’s inferno (i don’t know if they can be considered challenging) are well done since you easily understand what to do in order to beat them and they give you margin for some error.
gw2 doesn’t give you nothing and when you make a mistake you die and 1 person dieing in certain content may as well mean a wipe.
the fact is in this game (i played for a while today after 3 weeks of not logging) the combat feels like a kitten everytime, you are constantly feared, knocked back or down, pulled, immobilized and crippled. removing condition against some mobs like krait is a waste of utility since you are always under some condition and potentially even a sparkfly can kill you. can you do the same to them with same efficacy? no you can’t!
i feel everytime i play this game that i’m punished for playing it.
and above all this every new update make it worse combat wise (see new tequatl, i don’t feel like it is a challenge but i feel like i’m hated from the devs). and when you don’t fight you have to press f from 30 (ie hunt the dragon) to 150 (ie dragon bash pinattas) times in order to complete some arbitrary achievement (like the fact that we search for clue about dragons after a year we fight them…).
so i played today but it was so frustrating and boring and raging (i guess this is why we play a game? to be enraged and kitten d?)
a queue system was too much? is it still like lfg.com but in game?
i agree too… with op, even if overflows or disconnecting doesn’t really bother me. i’m not playing this game due to the things to do in schedule, time gated content and the invisible instant kill (example lupicus phase 2 you can dodge aoe but there is an invisible projectile that down you no matter what, same with dwayna world event, i can be hit by the lights and still stands and sometimes for no reason and the same gear i got hit from the lights and go downed in an instant), invisible red circles on red ground griefing colorblind people like me (we discuss this issue since the very beginning, but apparently changing the circle to something more visible or a different color it’s just unacceptable). endless new content that is nothing less than old content but recicled or forced on to you and even if you don’t care to play it because you manage to have enough selfcontrol to not bother with new shinies and achievement, half people and friends are busy doing it and the other half already left
they are broken, otherwise they would be implemented in pvp, but they are not^^
yeah now that shatterer has a timer i’m scared the hell out of him, or fail to kill him…
one shot mechanics can make yu aware and a “better” player, but just for that kind of content or this specific game.
if there is such a mechanic though, why do we need stat on armors? why do we have light, medium and heavy armors? why there are class with more hp than others?
if you only see variety of builds and stats in pvp and never in pve, there is something wrong going on…
and you need at least one dungeon repeated multiple times for every legendary
having a timer on bosses so the event can actually fail is like a single player console game with no save point.
i like lupi and most of boss fractals too.
because difficulty is time based lately in every new boss content. and this is the only way we can fail events… so timer feels like a punishment rather than a challenge.
my opinion anyway… i think you shouldn’t care about events that not fail, it is good if they always succed even if it takes a day long, you should create content because you want to entertain people not because you want to teach them failure even in games (we are plenty of failure wherever else we go).
oh i never was a casual player of gw2 anyway. i passed from hard core to no player at all (for some weeks now)
nice said op, although i never ever in my pvp experience or wvwvw matched a thief with a build not relying on invisibility. there simply aren’t any (i myself play a mesmer in pvp in a completely different way than pve and of course i’m plenty of invisibility and invisibility buffs… and that is because so far it was the best defense ever).
any other class has had builds completely dismantled, and they were their strongest builds of course.
i still don’t know what to do with my mesmer since the 25th of june build wise, the only thing i know i spam confusion/conditions and invisibility in pvp (and i still die^^)
timer worked magic with karka queen and the invasion, the former it was just done untill achievement, and the latter it was gladly failed (and the timer provided plenty of excuses not to be coordinated to succed despite the odds)
it’s just that i hate timers and missions on timer and i see only timer in every new content, starting from the timer of 2 weeks for every new update
the legendary is meant for all those people that play all the content of the game, not just pve.
the only content exluded from it is pvp since it doesn’t even have legendaries
yeah, more and more things on timer and the arbitrary immunity to damage unless condition x is reached (karka queen and pretty much every new boss since than, i guess tequatl too, we will see soon enough).
and no new area to explore, just run with rox in the same maps you already know better than their designer
oh, they increased health and put them on a timer… that’s a challenge… /sarcasm
i’ll try a prophecy instead:
it will be hard and long, the waypoint will be contested so if you die you better have friends willing to ress, the poison will make it impossible to come near, the adds will be champion kraits swarming the cannon and we will fail this event a lot before we manage to complete all the achievement attached to it (unless of course you are on a smart server with smart players). after a while sparkfly fen will be desolated as orr and southsun. and everybody will go kill the shatterer untill he will get buffed too.
i really hope though this will not happen and even if the fight is hard people will still want to kill him
also i wouldn’t call the healers healbots, i always played an healer or a magic caster dps in other games and the diference usually was that the magic caster dps i could just stand there spamming my rotations of skills to the boss not worrying about anything with maybe some kiting.
the healer role was far more stressfull, i had to pay attention who i had to heal, kite mobs because nobody cares to keep the healer alive or safe, be blamed if you die because the tanker never cared about you, and be blamed if anybody else died. be the first to be attacked in every pvp situation (with nobody usually defending you but asking for heals usually out of range). overall i liked to be the healer a lot more than i like to be the mesmer (or anything else for that matters). oh and from an healer perspective i never had to wait for a dungeon run, i was begged for a dungeon run, here i can be even muted in map chat when i try to form a group
trinity is this
LF tank for 1h (dungeon, PVP) players log off, disband group = no dungeon run
LF priest for 1h same as above
After month of this, the game enters an inevitable death
that’s why most of those games have queue systems, while we spam map chat or go to an outside website to search for group and we are not even searching for a specific roles.
there have been times were i logged off with no dungeon run because i couldn’t find a group in gw2 too.
and this is why they finally after a year realized we need a lfg system, and i hope it will be an autoqueue
Trinity is like playing soccer. One player plays by different rules (can use hand) and therefor the entire team hinges around his ability to protect. If a goal comes through, it’s almost always the goalkeeper’s fault. Such unbalanced rules lead to problems like hooliganism, extremely stale gameplay (one goal in 90 minutes is enough) and an overall appeal to the masses. It does make soccer a popular sport but it sure isn’t the best.
Next, compare to cycling or basketball. Everyone plays by the same rules which actually forces proper teamplay. Once you get into the strategy of these sports, it’s crazy how deep the rabbit hole goes on a meta level. However this forces deep understanding of the game mechanics and a bit more active intelligence to enjoy the game properly. It also leads to active and compelling gameplay throughout the game.
Guild Wars 2 does have team play, but it’s not as obvious to the naked eye. The whack-a-mole healing in trinity gameplay is like the goalkeeper. He plays a different game entirely and frankly doesn’t matter in the actual game.
i think you completely underestimate soccer which is not 10 man trying 1 goal and a keeper trying to prevent it…
there are roles and rules that apply to everybody same as baseball… but better in my opinion.
that said is not that there isn’t team play in gw2, the fact is that most of the team play can be reduced to:
player with no aggro (class doesn’t matter) go ress downed player as soon as possible,
everybody dps, everybody try to keep up for himself. situational utility in case of projectiles or condition cleansing.
that’s it. survive as better as you can, dps and win
i like being able to save my self and play solo in games, that is why i always end up in some healing light dps role so i don’t need party for most of the content.
so in theory gw2 was the perfect game for me and i could also use any class i like to do so… although, this resulted for me in a no reason to roll any other class than my favorite and also some classes like the elementalist can’t simply have easytime ever compared to mesmers or guardians that sometimes don’t even need to dodge. also i agree that when you are experienced you really don’t need anything but projectile reflection and dodging or dodging skills, so no need for toughness, vitality, conditions, or even the class specific trait line for that matters. same goes with stat armor.
i realized i have something else to say.
i see people denying the game is grindy talking about how easy it was to get the new ascended weapon, six day for a casual i read and no more than 58g.
no defender said something like:
it was awesome to get it, all that chain quests to do in order to get the materials, all those nice instance stories to go through and so much nice new mechanic to try in order to finish the quests…
i guess it wasn’t that fun doing it, just routine… and some more jumping in a not 8 bit content this time
this is sadly true, for a lot of stories untold before!
i agree with chuo, there are times i would log back in, but when i ask my self why and what to do if i log back i come up with nothing, i guess i could just chat with my friends that are still playing, but do i need a game environment to do so?
and when i see what is to come to the next fast update i still see same content revamped or reworked but it still the same old content.
things like tequatl rising are what arenanet didn’t yet understad, they’ll do this boss harder, there will be probably a lot of grindy achievement attached to it, some of them time gated as usual, like kill tequatl 14 times in different hours of the day or once a day whatever. some click f near here for 150 times, and than when the event is over and everybody will have their new wings backpack (which is also the only gear we have all this variety and also the only gear we can’t craft or buy exotic at tp, and grind for ascended version) nobody will bother to kill tequatl anymore because it will take time and effort, like the karka queen or some of the temple. arenanet when try to design challenging content usually come up with punishing content, so we will get punished for playing this game one more time.
and despite every fast update i still don’t know what to do in this game anymore unless i have to log in in order to not fall behind in gear progression, laurel hoarding, or karma hoarding or whatever it is i have to do now to waste my time with zero content and zero story to be told (why should i care about ascended anyway when fractal is the only dungeon with no story attached to it and no reason to increase in level difficulty? why should i go fractal 80 instead of 10? also if they’ll gate future content with agony resistance just for the sake of give reason to all this new crap, wouldn’t even be a worse game?).
so i guess i’m stopping playing 8it is already a week i don’t log in), i only have to find some nice thing to say to my guildies and friends yet remaining.
oh and to finish in beauty, in october they will revamp class and traits again… so my guess is the ascended grind will start again in october when people will be forced to change their builds by their idea of revamping to promote build diversity in a game where at the moment there is no deep difference between any of the 8 class other than the weapon they can use and if they can build for direct damage
i really like him, i wish i knew what the hell am i doing in fractal ever… why things happens and why the hell i’m supposed to care
filled it up, i would explain why i rate low any of this updates but they didn’t ask (reason is gear progression and even worse recycled content all over)
and yet in the next update we get another recicled content!
also they said a lot of time ago that there will be a level cap raise so…
i also noticed that my dye drop rate back then was higher when i decided to give up on magic find
