I kinda’ have to disagree to a point there is a substantial amount of RL money that is brought into the game everyday through people buying gems with RL money.

Snip

If you are saying here that real life money brings gold into the game, then you are incorrect.

When someone, let’s say me, buys gems with real money and sells them on the TP, no gold is generated. The gold I get is 100% from other players who are buying gems with ingame gold, no new gold is created. This gold is directly transferred from their bank to mine. Zero gold is generated and zero inflation occurs.

It’s called supply and demand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand
In microeconomics, supply and demand is an economic model of price determination in a market. It concludes that in a competitive market, the unit price for a particular good will vary until it settles at a point where the quantity demanded by consumers (at current price) will equal the quantity supplied by producers (at current price), resulting in an economic equilibrium for price and quantity.

The four basic laws of supply and demand are:

  1. If demand increases and supply remains unchanged, a shortage occurs, leading to a higher equilibrium price.
  2. If demand decreases and supply remains unchanged, a surplus occurs, leading to a lower equilibrium price.
  3. If demand remains unchanged and supply increases, a surplus occurs, leading to a lower equilibrium price.
  4. If demand remains unchanged and supply decreases, a shortage occurs, leading to a higher equilibrium price.

Many people in the game have played for a year or more. They no longer need basic gear and are going for vanity items, which this is. They also have more gold than they need (and a fully geared level 80 doesn’t need a lot of gold in PvE). Basic economics will tell you that vanity item prices will increase in this situation.

The price is high because it’s both a vanity item and labor intensive. If you were selling one, would you underprice it?

The problem is now these world bosses, quite often, take too long to kill, scale pretty poorly, and don’t give enough rewards for the time invested in comparison to other activities in game.

Before the Tequatl update, they were fairly easy, didn’t require a lot of time to get an ok reward, and thus were a regular circuit for a lot of players.

I don’t want to spend 10 minutes killing the frozen maw just for a rare and some junk. Many others feel this way too.

The world boss circuit is just too time consuming with the changes and no longer that great of a choice for spending your time in game.

Since the boss update, Teq is off my list, too time consuming for the reward, and I’ve guested to high population servers to try to do Shatterer on off hours and that will be failing also. No one there and the camp with the mortars overrun. Even the Maw can be a problem sometimes with not enough people. No point in trying with only a handful when you know the timer is ticking.

Did you ever play Guild Wars 1? That game had weak gold sinks and rewards were too high. Towards the end of 2012 I could easily make 10,000 gold in a day. There was a max of I million gold you could have in your bank and then each character could hold 100,000 gold. As you can well imagine, many people (including myself) maxed out the 1,000,000 bank gold and had to resort to holding excess money on their characters. This made the prices of items skyrocket.

There wasn’t a trading post, only player to player trading. Since the max you could trade at one time was 100,000 gold that meant people found a substitute for gold, ectoplasm. By the year 2012, one ecto traded for about 9000 gold. So people would sell high priced items by asking for 100,000 gold and X number of ectos. Some REALLY high priced items were 100,000 gold and stacks of ectos, with one stack being 250 of them.

Guild Wars 1 was also an object lesson in what happens if there are weak gold sinks.

They would have to compensate more than just a little bit of gold. I’ve set the goal for myself of eventually outfitting 8 characters in full ascended. So far I’ve gotten 5 ascended weapons and around 19 ascended trinkets. That was a lot of grinding doing world boss events, guild bounties, harvesting and buying from the trading post. I chose to do this so I’m not complaining, but if they abruptly took away the results of all my work then I’d be seriously annoyed. As well as distrustful of what else they might decide to do.

I wouldn’t object to them making it easier. But I would say no to them taking it away.

Well, we ALL would love to get around the gold sinks. ^^

But of course, that isn’t reasonable. The health of the whole game has to be considered above the wants of the individual. If the system was set up so that one person could easily avoid the gold sinks then everyone would flock to it. This would quickly lead to the weak gold sink situation of Diablo 3 and the resulting hyperinflation where people needed millions and then billions of gold to buy items. And THAT would eat up your gold far faster than the gold sinks you are having now. A quote from that article: “watching the markets collapse and gold become worthless. … So you feel rich that you have a billion or two in gold? … Well guess what, you aren’t … there is nothing you can invest in to hold value. . .”

Astral Projections.7320

Who exactly decides what is the ‘good stuff’? My fractal level is 0, it’s just not that appealing to me. So much so that I don’t even know what kind of rewards you can get from it. Regardless, no matter how ‘good’ content might be, it is often consumed and then left behind. If the rewards keep people there, they often complain about it being a grind (because it soon becomes repetitive). I just don’t know what the answer is.

Really, the Devs have a difficult balancing act. Rewards too small, content is abandoned. Rewards to easy to get, content is done then abandoned. Rewards are difficult to get, people do them but many complain about grind. Or they complain that the content is too difficult for the average player.

I suspect this is why ANet started the Living Story, or one of the reasons. A short cycle of content keeps people from getting too bored with any one part of it. A constant churn of new rewards keeps people from reaching the end of the rewards and stopping. Since each part has its differences, this keeps down the repetition and the complaints of grind (not all of course, but it lowers the amount).

“These gold sinks are just delaying the inevitable fact that the economy will inflate to the point were copper will become a novelty. My main intent is to make money while enjoy my game, not making money just to have it taken from me as some bullkitten cost of play crap”.

It doesn’t look like you’ve considered that rampant inflation would take money away from you faster than the games current gold sinks. You should read up about what uncontrolled inflation does to savings. The first picture is a chart showing the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic. The second shows a woman burning money, as it was cheaper to burn it than to buy fuel with it.

In an MMO like Guild Wars 2, money constantly flows in. Unlike a real economy, there is no away to get rid of the excess unless you have gold sinks. The gold sinks are the only way to keep inflation from turning the gold you have now into coppers.

Something to consider. The game Diablo 3 was made without sufficient gold sinks. That caused the game to develop hyperinflation http://artsygamer.com/diablo-3-a-lesson-in-hyperinflation/

The Golem Mark II scales nicely. In fact, it seems to do very well with just a few people. I was with one where there were just 3 or 4 people and it was able to be done with no problems. If they could aim for that level of scaling on at least the non dragon bosses, that would be wonderful.

That’s interesting. I looked through the Dulfy site and was unable to match that weapon skin with any weapon on there. From the picture is seems to be a narrow blade serrated on both sides. None of the ones I saw on the site matched this.

The particle effect probably was a graphical bug. If it was part of the weapon, I would think it would make it a popular dagger instead of an unknown.

Nicer Med. Outfits for Female Asura?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Astral Projections.7320

Astral Projections.7320

I think there are two main reasons why female Asura wear male armor. One is GW lore. Female Asura essentially have identical bodies as males. What male Asura find sexy in a female is large brains, long ears and the alluring scent of machine oil. Both male and female Asura would human type sexy armor ridiculous on a female Asura.

The second reason is a theory. That it is tied into considerations concerning making a small, childlike figure look sexy. That ANet had concerns about people putting clothing that is appropriate for an adult woman on a character that, in many cases, looks and moves like a toddler. Since the lingerie type armor can’t be assigned only to some races and not others, then Asuran females had to be set to wear male armor only. Which means they can’t make a skirt and tank top for female Asura because it would also be skirt and tank top for the males also.

Then there is a third reason why what you want will not happen anytime soon. For them to allow the females to wear a skirt, they would have to go through all the female armor and town clothes in the game and remodel them to fit on female Asura body shape. This would be a lot of work and it’s very unlikely they will ever do it.

I guess it’s because of the transmutation stone system, which is why they are one time use skins rather than infinite use. If they were unlimited use, then less stones sold.

Not excusing it, just my theory. I badly miss the flexible Guild Wars 1 system. I bought every single costume they put in their store. In this game, I have bought one set of armor and zero town clothes. Not because I disliked what they had to sell, but because I dislike buying armor/costumes I can’t reacquire if deleted.

The only reason I bought the Krytan armor was because I am sick of the buttcapes that is most of the female medium armor and at least it has form fitting pants and a short jacket.

Sorry, but no. There are no servers you can switch to for free. The only way to do so is one I doubt you would want to do, which is to delete all your characters.

I’ve never switched but isn’t there a period of time that you can’t WvW after switching? If you do switch, you might be in the same situation once the cooldown period is over. And you certainly don’t want to get a server that always does poorly in WvW.

If it were me, I would consider going to the highest ranked server. At least you would then have a good chance of being in a competitive server. However, as a comment, I’m in the Henge of Denravi server. It’s one of the lowest population servers but it seems to do pretty well in terms of WvW. I don’t WvW either but I got mine done, of course it was before this new system. Maybe you could guest to it and other low population servers and try asking in LA map chat about how well they do and how likely it is that you will be able to get these points.

Ascended Armour. Is it worth it?

in Crafting

Astral Projections.7320

Weaponsmith has melee weapons so if you need ranged, you will need huntsman or articifer, depending on your profession. This will be an additional 200 gold in money or mats to level each one and then the additional mats bought or harvested for each weapon.

Armor will probably be later this year. And an additional 200 gold, etc, etc.

Ascended Armour. Is it worth it?

in Crafting

Posted by: Astral Projections.7320

Astral Projections.7320

You can’t sell or buy ascended gear. You can buy and sell some of the crafted ascended mats but not all of them.

If you had to buy all the mats, the cost to go from level 400 to 500 is about 200 gold. So depending on how stocked up you are in mats, the cost in gold is from zero to 200 gold. And then it costs more, either on gold or in time spent harvesting, to make each weapon.

If you level Weaponsmith to 500, you can make an ascended dagger.

The stats are better than exotics. I’ve seen a number of threads calculating how much better, they range from 5 to 10% better.
For example: Beserkers
One handed……………………..two handed
Exotic
Power 90"…………………………179
Precision 64………………………128
Critical damage 5%………………9%
Ascended
Power 94…………………………..188
Precision 67……………………….134
Critical damage 5%……………..10%

Not all agree the increase in stats are worth the cost to make.

If you are looking for a weapon stats other than Beserkers, you can find it in wiki.

One also has to look at a Bell Curve to understand how events pan out. Some people at the far right of the Bell Curve are ‘lucky’. They get more than the average number of good drops. Some people at the far left of the Bell Curve are ‘unlucky’. They get less than the average amount of good drops. Over time though, these groups will shift position within the curve.

People who are very lucky or very unlucky will talk about it. When they drift back to average, they will stop as they will either have nothing to boast about or they are now happy. The ones who are newly at the edges of the Bell Curve will then start boasting or complaining. And this keeps up a constant amount of comments about good or bad luck accounts.

Another point to consider is bias in remembering events and drops. Research has shown that people are very prone to misremembering and unconsciously changing the history of what happened. They also tend to remember the stories around them that bolster their own beliefs and to discount the stories that don’t. If someone believes that his account is unlucky he will especially notice stories of extreme luck on either side, especially since these are the stories most often told even though they might be the most rare. The majority with average luck tend not to talk about it, one way or another.

Question about scammers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astral Projections.7320

Astral Projections.7320

I’ve played an MMO with this interface. People have still found ways to scam using it.

GW1 had that interface. The complaints of scamming got so bad that it’s the very reason GW2 doesn’t have that interface.

I haven’t been on GW1 in probably 5 years, so I don’t remember the trading interface. In the game I’m thinking of, people would do something like “oh here have some free stuff along with the (expensive) item you want!” Then they’d fill the trade window with junk until the first item scrolled off the screen, and then pull it out of the trade.

It’s been a year, but iirc, you were limited to a panel of 5 items and a max of 100k plat.

People would try to scam by putting in less than the agreed amount of money, less than the agreed number of items or putting in a junk item with a similar icon as the wanted item. The scams all pretty much depended on the other person being careless with checking it over first or naive. I remember one guy who put in 50k plat instead of 60k in one attempted scam of me. (Then tried to argue he only did it because he was poor but he wanted the item I was selling).

Example: Mursaat tokens were used to scam others with direct trading in place of globs of ectoplasm.

I do like the idea of the game “remembering” your last status and defaulting to that.

Depends. If people have ‘game messages’ enabled then it tells them in chat [character name] is online, as soon as they login and before they click on invisible. It also tells them when they log out, even if they are invisible. In addition they can see on the friends list what map they are on, even when invisible, as that will update whenever they change maps.

Ele weapon changing tab when OCC

Posted by: Astral Projections.7320

Astral Projections.7320

I swear, do some people not bother to actually read the initial post or to think before commenting,

Anyway, I would like to have more OUT OF COMBAT weapon slots for all professions.

One possibility is the 4 choices like in Guild Wars 1. While OOC you click on a choice both to select and deselect. Once IN COMBAT the choice(s) are locked. The Ele and the Engineer still have only one weapon and can’t switch again until OOC.

This would have multiple benefits for all professions.

  1. it would encourage using weapons depending on what is coming up rather than staying with the same set continuously.
  2. Having to stop and dig around in the inventory discourages people from trying out different weapons. Staying with the same weapons all the time instead of switching around makes combat stale.
  3. it would free up inventory slots for all the professions.

They are only repetitious and the arguments stale for those that have been reading the forums for a long time. For people new to the forums, the topics are new and the arguments fresh.

Stifling discussion because you have heard it before is not reasonable nor is it healthy for the forum to constantly be closing off polite, well meant discussion. Any discussion, no matter how hackneyed and stale it is to you, is new and fresh to someone else. They should be allowed to discuss it, just as you once discussed it for the first time.

If you came up with a idea, would you feel it best handled by being immediately shut down with the reason, others have already discussed this subject. Wouldn’t you feel dissatisfied and feel maybe you had something to say that they didn’t and that it wasn’t fair to tell you to be quiet just because others had had their say.

Your post, OP, comes across to me as the long term forum posters saying to new people, “I had my say and now I’m not allowing you to have yours”.
