My views on why GW2 =/= Esports

Has Arenanet ever said they wanted to make GW2 Esports?

can’t they simply be attempting to glamorize (if only for brief moments) the competitive aspect of their game? I mean , they spend lots of time on the PVE aspect and story, too. It’s not like LoL where there’s a little splash screen lore and the whole game is pvp.

maybe they’re just proud of their PVP aspect and want to make it appealing to serious gamers.

I keep hearing this term thrown around without any confirmation that Anet actually wanted their game, at its peak, to be a pvp oriented, tournament-worthy, highly-competitive marketable sport-within-a-game.

I just want to chime in and say I’m very pleased with the community responses on the state of “pay to win” being attached to things that have no impact on actually “winning” at GW2, as a means of shaming Anet for offering those things for cash and the players for purchasing things they would not have the time to accrue outside of busy schedules.

Invisibility is the biggest mind game of all.

And that is why invisibility will always be op.

Isnt that the whole point of the class, though?

High skill floor, High skill ceiling, squishy class with very little damage mitigation besides several fleeting seconds of asking the opponent to guess where said player might be sounds like a decent trade off to me.

Unless you’re willing to armor the thieves better or give them visible damage mitigation, as I mentioned before. That’s also fine.

Put on your walking shoes. Being able to teleport anyone anywhere in WVW is asking for trouble when your objective is capturing landmarks. the lack of WPs also provides a way for defending servers to pick up some breathing room after wiping an attacking server’s squad.

Call it knee-jerk or whatever you like, but enabling any server to consistently bombard another with a steady stream of small to large scale squads, with little concern given to the toll that would take on the efforts for defenders to repair, prepare, and regroup would further decay the already-slim fighting chance the less-represented servers have in any given matchup.

If you want thieves to stealth less, give them active condi clear and more armor so that they dont get Full-hp-to-destruction’d by anything that isnt a slight breeze.

Yes I do play thief, but by the quoted comment above I question if you do.

Knight’s Armor
Zerker Trinkets
Assassin’s Weapons

Melandru’s Runes
Lemongrass food
Oil Utility

Sigils that give bonus to crit chance and stack vulnerability.

0/6/6/0/2

Practiced Tolerance, Ankle Shot, Invigorating Precision
Shadow’s Embrace, Hidden Thief, Shadow Rejuvenation
Thrill of the Crime

D/P + SB

Conditions are not a problem (especially bleed lol) thanks to Melandru Runes + Lemongrass + Shadow’s Embrace + being able to stealth when ever revealed wears off (assuming I even attack from stealth).
Sticking to the enemy like glue is also not a problem
Pretty much a 100% crit chance (works well with Invigorating Precision)
Knight’s + Melandru Rune + Practiced Tolerance means I don’t die from a single burst.
I still do as much damage as my other professions who require more survivability since they don’t have stealth as a crutch.

Don’t make your build a glass one and you won’t insta-down and lose this self entitlement that the enemy should be the one to insta-down from a single burst from you.

Couple things.

Watch what you assume. I do run zerker, that much is true, but because I enjoy the high risk, high reward/intimidation factor that comes with that, not because “1shot everything lol.” Not every zerker is a dps-elite; intimidation from watching HP drops is a foundation of strategies around said builds.

What I was trying to point out to you was that your proposed “Fix” to stealth did more harm than good to builds that laid outside your own. I was not questioning how well -you- did against bleeds, but how well your proposed fix did against them.

Also, I run about the same as you. Sometimes I swap out ToTC for Fleet shadow and I run executioner instead if I am not running Deadly Arts, but the core of our builds seems to be the same.

The combat scenarios I was focusing on were PVP oriented, although I do roam from time to time. in PVP, lemongrass does not exist and, seeing as how I run scholar instead of melandru, my build specifically relies on stealth for condi clearing DoTs that would be fatal.

And for the record, even with knight armor in WVW, thieves have a medium health pool and suffer against heavies/Steamrolling Elementalists. I concede that you have an idea what you are doing as far as WVW is concerned, but I still find it strange that you’d fail to take into account that your suggestion cripples thieves that run anything moderately different to the build you do.

Thanks for providing the context I needed, though.

Taking the arguments above into consideration, it would be just as much an issue if a group of friends who were actively contributing to the map got separated because two of them had to take a bathroom break and were replaced by people who were physically present, but did nothing of value for the state of the map until Vinewrath started.

Probably best to let things remain as is on this one. If the map isnt getting anything done because people are AFK, taxi to a new one instead of requesting the AFK people move.

There are alot of counters against stealth… l2p…

Couldn’t help but notice you didn’t mention any of them.

Sic em, whatever the engie “sic em” is called, interrupting d/p HS in BP, pbaoe after they stealth, immoblizations, running in the opposite direction so they’re forced to use a shadowstep. block/aegis and dodgeing after you see aegis strip. there are likely more that im forgetting, be creative.

Dont complain about having to slot a skill specifically to counter a theif, we’ve had to slot daggerstorm ever since the RF buff just to have a chance of not dying immediatly to rangers.

Now that I play a thief, I can honestly say that those don’t work worth a kitten .

Sic’em? Can’t stop me from entering stealth. In fact, going into stealth will cancel the effect of the shout. Interrupts? That’s the beauty of the initiative system. Spam-ability. Interrupting is a temporary draw back. Blinding Powder also works no matter what state I’m in. I also hope that interrupt is a ranged one. Black powder will blind you and your attempt to interrupt my HS will miss. However, being D/P, I will probably be on you so even if you are ranged, my BP will still blind you and your ranged interrupt will still miss.

If you depend on DS to counter RF you are doing something wrong. Although I have an advantage here. I run dagger/pistol so Head Shot = RF canceled. Also don’t stealth on an RF. Dodge (twice if you have to) and then stealth. By the time you come back out your endurance should be good for one more dodge. Assuming you even need to the moment you come out.

You sound like a thief that is constantly in need of initiative, if I can be frank. I’m having trouble taking you seriously, seeing as how most of your examples that stealth is overpowered require draining most of, if not all of your initiative bar.

Mind posting a build so I can better weigh your opinion?

While in stealth, a thief should be impervious to damage. Getting hit physically produces 0 dmg. Thieves are also immune to the application of conditions but are also immune to the application of boons. Any current boons and conditions on the thief before they enter stealth continues to exist on them and effect them while in stealth. Thieves can not be healed while in stealth

You sure you play thief seriously?

You’re essentially saying that getting hit with a small stack of bleeds as a zerker thief should be death.

>Lol’d at “Regeneration should not affect thieves in stealth, but bleeds should”

Stealth is = but less offensively viable than complete invulnerability, allows you to fight on you’re terms, has no immediate counter skill (no ability to keep someone from stealthing or to reveal stealth players) thus making it one of those abilities thats always safe to use. And as an added bonus- gives you time to think about you’re next move (clockless chess). This is why stealth/invisibility as a mechanic will always be overpowered.

A couple of things.

1) You will need to explain on what terms stealth is “widely accepted as not being see[n] anymore.”

2.) Stealth is not clockless chess in GW2. As was stated above, the traits that favor stealth as a mechanic all sacrifice damage output in exchange for longer duration. Most stealths last less than three seconds unassisted, with the minor outlier having an interruptible cast time and Shadow Refuge essentially marking a wide circle with “here is where the thief is hiding.”

3.) It is not equal to invulnerability in any respect, because stealthed players can be downed, killed, have condis applied, and take damage like regular players.

4.) [Sic em] and [Utility Goggles] are direct counters to stealth. Other less noticible counterplay include using illusionary wave, PBS, or another knockback skill to cripple Shadow Refuge stealth due to the fact that projectiles track if initiated before the target lock is lost.

5.) Stealth is not always safe to use. Feathers cause an effect that show a thief is in the area, as do blinding powder and SR. Hide in shadows does not, but it has a cast time.

6.) Thieves are all about positioning and using circumstance/terrain and strategy to down players. That is an inherent feature of their class, not a symptom of bad design. They cannot facetank much of anything, less so if they are not Shadow Arts Specced. They have no invulns, no blocks. Everything they have as active defense borders on stealth or evades (That cost them initiative, which they also need to attack).

IMO, I don’t think its overpowered at all. I play both a warrior and a thief, and going from a person that only played warrior into thief gave me a newfound respect for all the junk thieves have to put up with to be more than a nuisance, especially against tanky warriors.

If you’re only targeting inactive people, and not “people whom get pulled away from their PC because of life reasons” then wouldn’t the report feature be kind of bad, because how can you distinguish between the two?

The shorter AFK timer sounds more reasonable.

for classes that have AI characters as part of their builds, they suffer the drawback of being predictable in combat, obstructed by terrain, and generally prone to the limitations of AI that human judgement can surpass.

The AI is not too difficult, and cutting it out of pvp would cripple more than half of our class builds. If anything, they need a buff.

The casual players don’t ruin the balance. The balance is only ruined when people who expect everyone to be on their skill level and know what they plan to be doing during the match join without premaking a team. The casual players don’t care if they lose, only the person trying to climb ladder does.

Deal. If we removed everything that was a mild annoyance in games, eventually the community would gnaw out most of the core play and whatever they found even slightly intolerable (which is at least one thing in every class) and balance would fall apart.

Explain - zerker and active defenses?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

Hi All,

I have seen all these groups asking for zerker – and many threads saying l2p active defenses in both pvp and pve (esp dungeons)
From what I can ascertain zerker is a armor stat is there a corresponding trait stat or is it all 6/6/x – full power / precision traits?
Active defenses are like Stealth, reflects and stuff so you don’t take damaged e.g. Stabilitys / condition clears?

Is there anything I’m missing here – or is the game really that easy that heals are not required?
IS it really just a case of learning the skill animations, sounds and what each boss does in pve and use an active defense?
PvP seems a bit harder to active defense – as the players are more random (human) but I presume the same logic there also applies?

Enlighten me a little please..
Tell me more how this dark art works that I can do dmg and take no dmg from stuff.

This is exactly right.

The dark art is pretty simple, actually.

The more informed you are as to what attacks, casts or AOEs cause damage to you, the less armor you need. Armors that provide toughness and vitality do so with a direct reduction to your potential damage output, but if you know what is going to hit you and have an answer to either reducing or outright avoiding that damage that isnt “lol face tank it”, then you can devote that buffer you would need to keep yourself alive to increasing the damage you do.

Stealths, blocks, utilities and dodges are “Active defense”- that is, defense that mitigates or negates damage, but needs to be initiated by the user, rather than “passive defense” which is built into the armor at a cost to damage output. Every class has lots of “Active” defense, and generally the more familiar you are with your opponents (be them AI or Human), the more you can rely on well timed evades or mitigation that your class provides as part of its skillset.

Heals are by and large not required to be specced for, given your entire group (if you are not soloing) knows what they are doing.

It is absolutely just a case of learning animations, tells, and general rotations of skills used by AI and humans. In essence the game boils down to

*Can you learn to not stand in a circle?

*If a warrior has hit you with a shield, is carrying an axe, and muttered something about being “all wound up” or “ready to hit”, can you move?

*Can you protect your back if a thief has stealthed near you?

*Can you run from a lich?

*Can you not stand under the drop crate?

If you can do the above ^ reasonably well, you can devote the armor you’d use as a buffer for mistakes or unforeseen occurrences to finishing the fight faster or generally being more dangerous to your opponent. Even high damage is a good defense in pvp; because it forces your opponent to go on the defensive, be that using their utilities or what have you.

It really isnt too complex. if you know “lol this is gonna kill me” and one of your options at that time is “don’t get hit”, why carry toughness? Running all zerkers is not a required meta or a “play this way or you get a stigma attached to you” its just a benefit of high level, high skill play. Lots of people have gotten to that point where they just dont -need- toughness, which is why zerker is a meta now. Unless you’re one of those people that gets a kick out of beating bosses by poking them with a toothpick.

Then.. yknow… be my guest, run nomads or something.

None of those actions makes the wielder special. or are hallmarks of the user’s dedication, skill, or overall competence, so it may as well be “some accounts are lucky.”

Non-berserker builds should be more rewarding

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

Your argument is not valid and is actually an ad hominem (https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem).

The problem here is that there is no problem to fix. The people who balance this game are educated people with degrees in their respective fields. Are you saying that you know more than them and can offer better solutions given the restraints they work with? The fact of the matter is, non berserker builds are rewarded by being allowed to stand in one spot and soak all the damage. That not rewarding enough? Put on some berserker gear and stand in one spot.

“there is no problem to fix” yeah maybe that is why we are always getting class balance updates every few months. Because everything was perfect 2.5 years ago and needed no change. It is obviously the opposite. The devs saw the problem and are always moving away from the zerker easy mode in new content and updates. New bosses that you can’t do critical hits, some bosses with more armor, etc…

I guess people are too salty today becuase of losing 125 power hahaha.

It’s like you almost ignored that the might nerf, the “tough armor”, and the “can’t be crit” affects non zerkers too.

They nerfed might stacking, not “zerker easy mode”. Everyone got their dps scaled back if they use might at all. Which, in parties, is a guarantee.

At what point does “wow, this tree sure can take a lot of damage, better sacrifice all the damage I have for armor so I can stare at it” become a reasonable train of thought?

No matter how far Anet moves back the damage cap, the main focus of zerker is to get from point A to point B as fast as possible, since the road in between has been traveled to disgusting exhaustion. “As fast as possible” is not a quantifiable number that Anet can remove from the game. It will always be the top end of the damage range they give us to work with, unless they want to go against good game design and cause unpredictable 1hKO procs to offset the “learning mob patterns and no longer needing to defend against them” process.

Coming from a bunker warrior that went full zerk, I can attest to the fact that trading all defense for damage is the farthest you can get from lazy. being unable to soak damage/ take more than a few hits forces you to pay more attention to actually staying alive; there’s much more to it than doing big damage.

I agree condis should have a pve buff to make those more viable, but I believe your viewpoint for zerk is a bit off.

Curious about Tengu

Azure The Heartless.3261

We are about to have an expansion where the big new PvE feature is gliding with wings.

It would be a shame if a Bird race isn’t included. If it doesn’t happen now it will probably never happen.

The trailer did say “new civilization” but pictured some NPC frogs under the caption.

It should be noted that the Tengu’s primary concern is Primordius. It has been stated that they regularly deal with his minions within their walls. They would be highly likely to join when the world focuses their attention on Primordius, and, if we learn to accept the Sylvari, they would likely become more trusting of us. From a lore perspective, it makes little sense for the Tengu to join the other races while they are at war with one of their own allies – especially given that the Sylvari are perhaps the only race that hasn’t given the Tengu significant cause for concern.

Sad but true. The lore hasnt set them up properly to be introduced. Hylek if anything would be a fitting race at this time.

Unless vines crowd the birds out of their home, we probably wont see them until we’re done with mordremoth and have a primordus catastrophe.

Is warrior REALLY sucking that hard ? o_o

in Warrior

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

As for armor and vitality, I understand its not relevant as most of your damage mitigation comes thru dodging but it does allow you quite a bit of lee way when compared to ele when u take hits so its very easy to play and missing your dodges is less penalizing. Take AC for example, there are no 1HKO bosses like alpha in CoE, so the poison Spider queen is less punishing, the spinning attack by kholer is less punishing…basically everything that isn’t 1HKO or agony is less punishing on warrior then ele or thief is what I meant when I said “a warrior with the best armor/vitality doing more damage then a squishy thief or ele make any sense to you?”

I’d like to point out that most classes that are too squishy to withstand the Kholer spin by nature have sustained ranged DPS, and that the inherent tankiness that you seem to be listing as a strength is a necessity for any Warrior not running Longbow (which is in itself miserable DPS).

And also that Warriors suffer more from poison than the classes you just mentioned.

I’d also like to mention that Guardians outrank us in most aspects should we dare to not bring banners.

I’ll abandon warrior and play revenant until they fix it, when it drops. Anet listened to whining that the damage oriented class did too much damage, eventually the metrics will give them some insight.

[Sugg] How to fix the Zerker Zerger problem

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

I don’t understand how “Don’t join parties that want to speedrun without the right gear” is still a problem that requires so much discussion.

There’s no meta. you can play how you want to, but being courteous takes precedence. If a tired party just wants to speedrun TA or whatever dungeon or instance, don’t slow them down by carrying a build not focused on damaged. They’re experienced; theyll rev you if you down and will rarely down to begin with. Its just like being free to use an escalator but at the same time allowing people that want to walk up it to do so by keeping to the right side.

That’s not even a problem that needs to be addressed. Thats looking for an excuse to impede speedrunning parties.

What’s even more confusing is “force them to take longer” is the penultimate solution all these threads reach, when that would do little or nothing to change the armor sets of players who actually know what to avoid, when.

Can someone explain this plainly to me? Why is the “zerker meta” a problem? how is it impeding anyone running a dungeon?

. Warriors just need a buff to hundred blades and whirling axe +50% buff would be a start.

My main is a warrior and even I find that ridiculous.

right now, Warriors are just about bearable. They dont need a ridiculous damage buff, they just need a small rework for Berserker’s power and an adrenaline rework so that fight resets don’t leave them defenseless.

And healing alternatives that don’t suck.

Out of all the downed states to change...

Wars have too much counter play? Their down states is one of the best in game and almost uncounterable-

Im going to stop you there.

Hammer toss is useless against blind, block, stealth, has a long cast time, and is easily dodgeable.

Even if you get hit by it, you still have enough time to stomp a war before their Vengeance is even usable.

Theres too much counter play. read up on the down state for Wars before thinking they’re remotely useful on the ground if someone is reasonably aware of them being down.

i have one of each class lvl 80, main thief d/p + SB, i burst warr but on 25% he become imune (6 seg with trait), then he heal 10-12k, block and stum, if he stum me my hp just desapir.
when i play with my warr i hit 26k+ with hammer + GS, just jump with earthquake (4k damage 3 seg stum +20% all damage) hundred blade(22k in 3seg), and all play in this area just die.

There is nothing in this game more telegraphed than Warrior skills

So you use Zerker amulet and Unsuspecting Foe and a greatsword in PvP?

You have much to learn my friend

Not that GS isnt viable in PVP if used wisely, but nobody in their right mind with a reasonable amount of sense would hang around for a Hundred blades and Earthshaker.

Warrior is strong, but its also telegraphed, has stupid dps on ranged items, and suffers from condi (or trades all its dps to not suffer as much from condi.)

Protip: “Don’t hug the warrior.”

This is not prepatch GW2 where warriors actually -were- a threat.

Why does ANet continue to push PVP
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/upcoming-guild-wars-2-player-vs-player-tournaments/
When most of us PVE or WvW?

Just imagine how all of that PVP/ESport money could have spent on the content that matters to ANet’s actual base populace?

1.) Enough of us care about PVP for it to matter.

2.) small scale, intense fights are in many cases more interesting to watch and commentate than a large scale fight or AI fight. Anet isn’t doing anything wrong by drawing attention to other aspects of their game.

I like pve as much as the next guy, but pvp could use some love too.

What is official class tier list for pvp?

Azure The Heartless.3261

Assuming:
S = Overpowered class which should be nerfed quite hard
A = Class which you probably should take as it is too strong
B = balanced class
B- = very very slightly underpowered but generally still ok in the right hands.

Thanks if someone can help me with this. I want to know what is OP and what is not.

Thanks.

All classes right now are B-. They all have glaring weaknesses that have been provided to them to make beating them easier, with decap engie’s weakness being the threat of courtyard being spun.

There are no classes at the moment that are innately better than any other class. the current pvp is very close to skill based play, with minor exceptions.

Turret engie is OP as long as you are in range of the turrets.

They trade all their survivability for OP-mode in a small circle that is easily overwhelmed by two players.

Mesmer is OP as kitten

in PvP

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

#nerfmesmernotele/engi

Sad but true people.

I would much rather they nerfed mesmer than ele/engi.

And warrior doesn’t even need nerfing people. It is a “fair” class. It doesn’t port around like a no-lifer whilst AI kills you.

Mesmer is annoying because:
1, It is all AI
2, They can burst out of stealth
3, They port around from ledge to ledge so I can never finish them off without a thief on my team
4, Playing with bunkery people vs thief/mesmer as a necro is miserable as you have no thief to nullify the mesmer and they kitten me.
5, I hope they don’t nerf ele/engi so it becomes mesmer/thief OP comps again which just farm all other squishies.

My opinion: please don’t nerf the kitten out of ele and engi if that just means we get more OP mesmers running around never letting me heal and bursting me out of stealth with like 3 buttons.

P.s. fire and air sigils are lame.

P.p.s At least eles and engis sit there and are there to be killed, mesmers and thieves port around like clowns and just kitten everyone off.

P.p.p.s Warrior isn’t OP

And so the vicious cycle continues. community wont be satisfied until we’re beating each other with sticks.

There’s nothing wrong with mesmer. It’s a decent class that takes skill to master, but the resulting payoff is huge.

It’s also innately glassy. If they hope to down you they must abandon much of their offensive skills.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but learn to play instead of insisting Anet cater to you. That’s how warriors got the kitten nerfed out of them, and I’m tired of seeing the same baseless whining applied to any class that isnt laughably difficult to play given the current “balancing”.

I love how they call the things legendary, give them effects that belong in visually loud animes and people practically kill themselves trying to get the things.

The illusion of prestige, man. Gets the suckers every time, right square in the wallet and wasted time.

They’ve got you folks pegged. Why should they change anything when many here will complain, but keep throwing cash at gems for gold anyway, or keep throwing loot into the mystic toilet, hoping that today might be their fifteen seconds of ‘glory’.

They haven’t ‘fixed it’ on all these years because our isn’t broken for what they clearly want it to be accomplishing.

Don’t look at what they say or what you think they said – look at what they do, or in this case, don’t do.

Story tells itself. Not much else to be said about it, is there?

+ 1.

I initially wanted twilight, but upon seeing how arduous the quest for a silly paintbrush effect is, I settled for a chaos set when the market was saturated and actually enjoyed the game with the time I would have spent grinding myself into disgust for a fleeting chance at a weapon that really doesn’t say anything about the wielder to begin with.
