Next expansion wvw maps

The only chance we have of a new map is if they happen to chuck a spare pve map out and then try and slot some towers etc on it and call it a new wvw map.

Unless they put real player testers in from day one of development it will just be another mess like DBL, where the only player testing was beata and then they ignored the feedback and released it anyway.

Suggestion - SMC related

SMC is a very important location for Eternal Battleground.

For big servers it means they can come online and harrassed any other server they like. practically 24/7/365 since they have players moving in there from all time zone. These servers can hold SMC for a week without any other server being able to even get close to it.

I would like to see these changes made to it.
1) Sieges build in smc, must not be able to reach any outer towers. IE: put SMC in a valley, lowering the terrain to enable outer towers using siege against SMC but not the other way around.
2) SMC without people taking care of it will go down in tier after X amount of time.
3) Supply route from opponents dolyak can only reach SMC if they have the whole line cleared. IE camp to tower to smc. If in between camp and smc is an enemy tower, the supply cannot and will not reach smc, it will stop at enemy tower nad the tower will get double ration.

If you think 1) is a bad thing, then you are completely missing the strategic value of holding SMC, not to mention one of the main differences between EB and DBL- which is that holding one object can affect another.

Besides, you can raid against SMC with a small group, break the outer wall repeatedly and wipe their siege with a well placed AC or ballista. It can be done with teams of 3-4. The idea is you place a catapult against the wall, and bang away until they come and kill it. Then start on a different wall. Rinse, repeat- they will either run out of supplies to repair or concentrate so much on defending all the walls that your other teams can cap half their side of the map- or take down a t3 bay or hills on their home border.

2) is just your side being lazy, see above.

3) Why? So flipping an enemy camp will now help the enemy? How does that make any sense? Terrible suggestion.

Try flipping camps, killing dollies, etc. There is nothing quite so satisfying as having the whole enemy zerg come just to deal with your 3-4 man team, and then running to a different target and annoying them some more!

The only reason any server can hold SMC for any length of time is if the servers they are playing against don’t have any tactics and just need a tag to follow blindly as thinking for themselves is too much effort.

Anet won’t do this for the simple reason that their main worry would be that it would kill off wvw.

For many this would be like treating a victim in A&E with a stab wound by stabbing them again.

Your proposal fails to solve the problem of server stacking. You assume people won’t talk to each other via ts, etc and then all move to stack one new server, creating exactly the same problem you were trying to solve.

The more casual players might just decide to call it a day.

In order for such a change to have any chance at all, it would have to be launched with a complete overhaul of the current wvw system, maps, skills etc with bonuses and penalties to even the playing field and less maps per match up and more teams in each match up. As Anet aren’t interested in spending that sort of dev time on wvw, it’s not going to happen.

They really missed a trick, and the clue was in the name: guild wars.

Sadly, they didn’t think to bring over the best feature of Guild Wars, which was guild battles, because they decided GW2 should be a pve game, and should break with the traditional (read well tested, balanced, etc) trinity.

GvG with categories and a few basic maps (flag running, guild lords, etc) would have had a huge following. Categories could have been 10v10, 15v15, 20v20, with different maps for each battle size to make them more tactical. Could have set up competitions with restrictions on each class numbers, even had solo class battles, etc.

It’s a shame they decided to promote 5v5 instead and forgot what motivates people- I used to love battling our way to near the top of the gvg ladder back in the first years of GW.

I’d prefer to move the other way and have 4 or even five servers on a map, 2-3 maps total.

Also, some form of penalty applied to the team with the most structures, so the more you hold the harder it is to hold onto it.

However, this would involve dev time, so not going to happen in my lifetime.

1v1 would be a step backwards- one side would over blob the other, and without a third team added in, would be very boring very quickly. More teams gives more tactics and more possibilities.

@Rash, none of my list was meant to denigrate people who might enjoy their wondering pve time – but there is a whole world for them to do that, it’s called pve. 1v1 or small scale skirmish you can have much more of that in spvp. To most of the wvw people I speak to, they would rather not have the map as tactically it’s awful. ‘omg the capped fire keep’. So? has zero effect- you can even run over the top of it, it has no impact on any other structure or even path.

DBL is just a collection of structures that have little to no effect on each other, connected by verticals that were clearly meant for a pve map with gliding enabled.

In fact, DBL when it came out looked like it belonged next to Silverwastes and was just a repurposed pve map that they didn’t have a pve use for.

I love dbl as well and would miss it immensely. It was actually my first map since I started playing gw2 right when HOT came out. I was honestly underwhelmed by alpine when I first saw it because DBL is so expansive and filled with places to go. It took me like 20 minutes to know every location on alpine in contrast. I prefer alpines keeps, but I much prefer DBLS towers. The alpine towers honesty completely suck compared to the towers in DBL. DBL is a fantastic map and Anet did a really good job with it, it honestly makes me sad how quick people are to dismiss because of it’s higher learning curve.

You guys complaining about DBL are probably the PUGS that hand over free loot bags to the enemy zergs all day in the extremely overplayed and worst map EBG. Do you guys even roam? Probably not because DBL is in my opinion the most fun map for roaming.

It’s fantastic how, exactly?

You run around and don’t see another person on it- is that good?

You run around and get jumped by a group of 4 ‘roamers’ playing stealth infused characters?

You run around doing pve?

You run around pvd?

You run around capping flags and camps?

A tower is attacked by a ninja party, by the time you’ve finished checking every possible attack spot they have downed the walls and are now at Lord?

There are lots of places to go..and do nothing and see no one. it’s not known as the Deserted Borderlands for nothing.

Even trying to get people to go to it is a struggle, even if it has the only tag online on it, or if you are forming a guild raid- because it’s the worst possible place to go to get fights, and you can end up running around the map achieving almost nothing compared to the other maps.

DBL is a roamer’s paradise- you can run around it all day and only engage people you know you can beat, or just go over or under anyone you don’t want to meet. But for large scale warfare, it’s a disaster.

The main issue with the Anet vote was the caveat they put in it, which was basically ‘vote to keep the DBL or we’ll never do another wvw map ever’. So of course people voted to keep it, what real choice was there.

Of course, since there isn’t a wvw dev team, the chances of getting another map or pretty low anyway…

At this stage for wvw I’d rather see 3 distinct balanced maps (no ‘home’ BL for any side) akin to EB, or if they want to be very lazy, 3 copies of EB.

Having four maps per match up is now too many, it spreads people too far out for the numbers who still play.

As for pvd, DBL remains a roamers paradise as they can pve all they like without meeting any enemies at all.

Is there an e-sport tournament or spvp thing on? If the answer is yes, then expect lag in wvw.

They devote more resources to spvp during those times, which leaves less for wvw to run in, hence the lag.

DBL is not going anywhere. It was voted in by the community. Move on to more productive conversations without spamming multiple threads please.

‘voted in by the community’ when the question was ‘would you like to keep DBL and we might do another map in future, or get rid of DBL and we’ll never make another map ever again’.

There wasn’t much of a choice.

Maybe they should do another poll now, with a straightforward question: should we remove DBL from the rotation.

Or better yet, ‘should we remove DBL from the rotation and start work on a new map for wvw with full input from actual players from the design stage so we don’t end up with the same farce as DBL’?

2. How do you determine ‘most points’ and also ensure it’s not gamed?

3. Too much power for one guild.

4. Moving guilds randomly away from friends etc, not good.

5. Randomly re assigning players because they decided not to join an ego filled guild that tells them what they must run, not a good idea.

6. Again, too much power in the hands of the guild.

7. That doesn’t give any say at all unless Anet also introduces a voting system, which they aren’t going to do, not to mention it can be gamed as well.

Good effort, but full of flaws. I’m going to assume you are in a large wvw guild as they have made the usual assumption about the unguilded not having many friends or people they regularly play with, and that they won’t mind being shuffled around from pillar to post. On many servers it’s all those small guilds or ‘guildless’ that make up the majority of the players- and they won’t like this new system at all.

Oh, and Anet won’t do seasons either.

The sad part is there is no wvw dev team and hence no chance of anything like this ever happening.

It’s sad that between all your players you couldn’t manage to sneak one player out to at least flip a few camps- which just goes to show how bad sheep are without a tag to bleat behind.

Against a big blob if you are few the best thing is to split into teams of 3-5 players and attack multiple objects all at once- it’s amazingly hard for the enemy blob to split and defend as they all want to blob rather than do any actual work.

And of course your fatal error is your title’s assumption that there is a ‘anet wvw team’. There isn’t.

What can you do if there is no commander?

One of the things I do when there is no tag is wonder off and build a catapult against one of their towers and quietly destroy a wall – if they are not scouting properly I might even get inside and can solo the tower lord (or call for some roamers to drop by when the wall goes down).

Best bit is when one enemy turns up expecting me to be blind to him and concentrate on the lord (lots of zerglings are guilty of that) and panics when I’m suddenly unloading in his face.

Or build a ballista and clear off their trebs in their keep.

There are lots of things to do without a com, you just need to engage that grey mess in your head.

It’s totally unbalanced and annoying that one thief can keep a wp contested all night, making having that wp pointless. 1v80 shouldn’t be a thing.

Easy solutions have been proposed for several years but since wvw is behind ‘fix hair out of place on npc number 234533 in town’ in Anet’s priorities I’ll be amazed if anything concrete is done to fix it- and it if is, it will probably break something else by being completely OP the otherway.

The easiest solution is 5% damage to a wall or gate.

They could deal with both these issues fairly easily- make resistance a percentage reduction and duration reduction of conditions, so that there are less stacks floating around for the necro to bounce epi around.

Thief WvW Issue

Anyone that gets hit by basilisk and has no stun breaks, deserves to die. I have no idea how you’re pulling 10k backstabs off too, some funky signet build? Might stacking? Full bloodlust stacks?

I can be hit for basilisk and by the time my finger has moved to the button to break stun the thief has unloaded 8 skills on me and disappeared back in to stealth… and 10k backstabs aren’t hard to achieve, even against 3k armor targets.

Might stacking and full bloodlust stacks are easy to get (5 kills and you have your bloodlust…this isn’t pve).

That would be a mechanical issues on your side, perhaps you should remap your stunbreak to a key that you can reach faster when in need, any class can burst you down if you just stand there doing nothing. Sounds like you die to eviscerate warriors a lot.

Yes, the mechanical issue is he can unload 8 skills via a macro as there is no cooldown between skills or activation times in 0.05 seconds compared to an average human reaction time of around .25 seconds, not to mention server lag delay. I have way faster than average reaction times and it still takes me longer to react and press any button than it takes for the thief (who has the element of surprise) to cycle through.

I laugh at evis warriors.

The issues are a lack of any casting time for a lot of thief skills (lending them to macros or even just rolling across the keyboard) combined with huge mobility and stealth.

The issues could be easily addressed by adding a delay or a cast time to the skills, making any damage cancel stealth and making stealth have a movement speed penalty. Then thiefs might have to learn how to play skillfully rather than reset fights if they don’t immediately win.

Of course I could just play my guardian and /laugh at any thiefs.

We have the Fractal and sPvP tournament wings, why can’t we have a legendary back piece for WvW?

That might involve a dev actually doing some work that is wvw centred….not going to happen.

Same with the one place where these things matter (wvw), legendary armor won’t happen for wvw either. I mean, who would want to change their build in wvw anyway? /sarcasm

They want to drive players from pve into spvp and fractals – not wvw, which I’m beginning to think they wished they had never included in the game.

Is EoTM a dead gamemode?

I’m still a low level player, level 23 at the time of posting this. I’m trying to level up my character quickly by playing WvW. Now, regular WvW is pretty much a “whoever is a higher level automatically wins” and is full of max level people, so I don’t play it in order to avoid getting constantly one-shot. I’ve been told EoTM is balanced, giving all players equal ground. That’d be great, if anybody ever got on EoTM. I must have gotten on about 8 times, all at different times of the day, and only ONCE have I ever seen a group of players storming an enemy point. FYI im on the Maguuma server, which is packed full of players, but no matter when I get on EoTM, there’s nobody on, ultimately making WvW pointless for me, because theres nothing I can do to level up or earn loot. Is EoTM truly a dead gamemode, with everyone preferring regular WvW, or am I just so unlucky that I happen to get on right after everyone leaves? It’s honestly made WvW for me the biggest disappointment of Guild Wars, because the only thing I can ever do is either join regular and be able to do nothing because I get one shot, or join EoTM and be able to do nothing because nobody is playing it.

It’s not hard to level up in pve, just complete the hearts and map completion and you will be level 80 before you finish the map. And you might learn something about the game along the way.

EOTM was meant to be an overflow map whilst people waited in queues. then it became for a while the favourite karma train of upscaled and pve’rs, but then new maps came out in pve land and EOTM is now pretty much done for, most of the time.

Save yourself time and effort and level up in pve- you’ll get more and better drops there too.

I’ve been playing necro as one of my mains for a bit now (ele got boring/nerfed and less drops as water ele), and glad to say I didn’t join in the epidemic fad, so not going to miss it either.

A good change, next up will be bleed stacking on chill in a month or so.

I find the best use of DBL is for when I don’t want to see any other players at all- I can have a wonder around, maybe slap a yew yaks, and after 10-15 minutes of utter boredom get on a map with some people or go play another game.

It seems you have the solution to your problem, but you don’t want to hear it from others…

Ghost thieves are indeed annoying, they are troubling to deal with, and with the amount of them in WvW, it gets old fast.

But, with most things, they can be countered, measures can be taken to turn the table on them, many people don’t want or like hearing it, you obviously don’t, but they are able to be beaten, using what’s available.

Stealth Traps
Stun Breaks / Stability
Condi Clears/Immunities
Predicting where they are and then standing inside their Black Powder ring (They hit you, and then aren’t stealthed.)

Even with them in full DIRE gear, they are able to be caught and killed.

yadayada…. Still doesn’t justify STAYING in stealth while dealing DAMAGE….

They WOULDN’T be in STEALTH if you used STEALTH TRAPS and stood inside their BLACK POWDER ring, but, hey, let’s complain and cross our fingers for a nerf, so we don’t need to use our brains and try.

You are offering makeshift solutions to a problem that shouldn’t exist.

But it does and the sooner people actally try to do something instead moaning on the forums the better. The game is already becoming too easy with passive stuff carrying people as well as passive runes (durabilty prime example) they can be killed with out using stealth traps.

The other night I came across 5 or 6 on ourside trying to chase down a ghost thief. I logged off got in my engineer, specced for reveals logged in went to same area, used engineer and thief was dead in seconds. he thief could not even escape with SB as he had used his ini to stealth up.

Great solution. You had to log off and bring a very specific build on a specific class in order to beat one guy with the help of 5-6 others (who got too kitteny and didn’t run when you turned up). If he was half decent he would have realised what you were playing and just disappeared off in to the sunset without you being able to catch him. If you have a queue on the map, what then?

Anyone who thinks stealth traps work at all as an aid in catching one of these is obviously a cheese playing thief, as stealth traps are about as useless as building a treb where the thief is and about as useful in stopping a pair of ghost thiefs. Try placing one when there are two thiefs and enjoy being downed while you stand there animating the trap…

The suggestion that you can run and stand in his circle in order to stop him stealthing is completely laughable..you need to spot it, move to it and hope he hits you in a fraction of a second whilst looking 360 degrees around you…on something that takes him 0.005 seconds to execute…

The real issue is that balance isn’t done for wvw, it’s done for pve and raids and spvp. They simply don’t care enough to test out changes in a wvw scenario.

It might be more practical to add a box that when opened allows you to choose an exotic inscription or insignia. The other items are easy to get (5 ecto and anthology of heros) from within wvw. They would probably want to price it steep to prevent pve material prices from crashing though. Probably 200 heroic things, 200 badges and 2g. Could probably also add infusion extractors into provisioner.

If they really want to keep the extra step for armor and weapons I can live with that.
The 5 ecto/anthology doesn’t do anything for accessories though, and I swear it feels like the same 4 rings drop over and over again with zero chance of getting anything else. It would be nice to be able to turn a few of those red rings of death into something like marauder or commander rings.

Well for trinkets just get new ones with reward tracks.

Which reward track gives ascended trinkets? I’ve been doing hero weapon track (mainly for siege lols) for so long I’ve forgotten!

Change Protection Boon- 100% damage reduction

The problems with combat in this game now are many.

Play against certain builds and you get ‘dodged, invuln invuln invuln block block block resistance, or ’poof’ reset, blah blah blah.

None of these should be 100% effective, but should grant a percentage reduction instead.

But this would involve too much effort for the balance team, so it’s not going to happen.

Can you please transfer off SFR? Use one quarter of a day’s earnings from your selling raids. I’m embarrassed on behalf of my server that people like you are associated with it.

Oh, and tell us your ign so we can all block you and exclude you from any groups.

Edit: Actually, why do you even need a Gift of Battle? You say you make 1000g in an evening selling raids, so you can buy every legendary weapon within a month or so.

What possible use is a Gift of Battle to someone who must have 100000000000 gold on their account by now?

IS ele no longer viable for zerging?

Support ele is still viable- just. Every patch it feels more and more useless though- but then with the power creep everything feels less fun to play.

I tend to stay in water for most of the fights as my water auto heals quite nicely and water 2 is an underrated skill.

I’m still dissappointed in the number of eles I see in group fights that only switch out of fire and air when they need to heal themselves – usually after over half our squad has wiped for the want of a water field….

Skill Balance Incoming

What made me laugh most:

Infiltrator’s Strike: This skill has been unsplit from PvP and will now use a 900 maximum range. Immobilize duration has been increased from 1 second to 1.5 seconds game-wide.

Yes, just what we need, a longer period of standing around while the thief spams instant skills to their hearts content before disappearing when you’re downed to finish whilst in stealth (rendering downed state skills useless too).

I’m glad I’m on a mini break as otherwise I’d be venting long and loud about the meteor shower changes which shows just how little the balance team ever think of wvw when they change things..

Ascended Vending Frustration.

Example vendor for WvW: 100 unspent rank points + 500 badges of honour + 60 gold = 1 ascended weapon or piece of armour, that way theres something for long time players to dump points into, and get ascended gear at the same time!

Knock off the 60 gold part. Maybe 5 gold. Us wvw players are poor!

The one change I’d like to see (and won’t happen) is for thiefs to get casting time on their skills so they can’t macro 8 skills in 0.25 seconds.

Oh how I would laugh!

More likely is they will nerf the hell out of my current necro and ele builds and make staff ele feel even worse than it does now with the long cast times and long cooldowns (combat log is always amusing, one auto attack from me, 10 skills from enemy).

Unlimited aoe would destroy group fights, boon sharing, healing, etc and would lead to very selfish self sustain builds with max aoe output. Players would have to spread out so much it would become almost 1v1 – at which point burst builds picking off targets at range that are standing outside their aoe would become a thing.

I could literally stop an entire zerg from ever capping SM with ten eles. Bear in mind the aoe cap also works on a lot of skills that are positives so it might end up ball vs ball and who has higher sustain wins…. so we could stand in your red circles all day and because there is no longer a cap on boon shares or heals we’d outlast you and wipe you out. Then bigger ball wins…

Either scenario could come to pass, and sniping off people running back to the fight would be the best option, so we’d see even more macro thiefs.

Bigger problems for me are burst macro using thiefs (latest was 8 skills in under 0.25 seconds). They need some sort of cooldown between skills.

But by far the biggest issue I have is invuln and resistance (and block). None of these should totally mitigate damage, they should be toned down to say 75% and see how that works. It’s annoying as hell to have a skill that takes seconds to cast and has a 30 second + cooldown be completely wasted then in they come with their instant or 4-6 second cooldown burst skills…

I main ele and necro and I’d hate to see aoe caps removed- although an increase in targets hit would be nice, maybe 8 as a cap. Unlimited would just be very ugly.

Well I made it through on my mesmer last night after the changes (without any deaths, downed a couple of times) having changed weapon sets and utilities.

It’s still more luck than judgement as there is so much spam going on it’s easy to get bounced around and then stuck at a barrel and die to the attack, or die while channeling a skill or utility.

It would be useful to have a checkpoint in the mission so that once you reach the final boss the mission remembers when you re enter the mission from scratch if you have to change your build, rather than have to repeat the whole thing from the start.

As for following patterns of circles on the floor whilst everything else is going on, not really possible whilst dodging, rolling, grabbing shards avoiding spawns and trying not to be channeling a skill when he decides to hit you and you need to use the special skill..

Baldrick, no offense intended, but I don’t know that you’ve encountered what I’m describing, or maybe you don’t play during NA off-hours.

If an enemy zerg runs up to your objective, the first thing they build is a shield gen, followed by two other shield gens, followed by two or more rams/catas, there’s not much you can do. Siege you build on the wall gets AOE’d down by Eles, or the siege operator gets Mesmer Focus pulled and killed.

Since a single person can only deploy one supply trap, covering every objective, or all the possible spots of one is nearly impossible. If you’re cowing one area, the zerg will go to another. Once they’ve built one Shield Gen, it’s game over since they can build two more while the first bubble is up, and provide full coverage after that. If well placed, the bubble will cover all the deployed siege, including the Shield Generators themselves.

I’m not saying that no group of people can ever defend against a zerg…all I’m saying is that a zerg with a driver that knows what they are doing is heavily favored over a group of defenders to the point that defense becomes trivial.

Suiciding on siege is an option, but when the numbers are 2, 3, or even 4 to one, it’s not a good one.

No offence taken.

If they only outnumber you 4 to 1, then if they have 30 you have 7 or 8 people and suiciding is a very viable option by the spare 5 people not on trebs (as the zerg has wiped your ac off the wall, and possibly ballista too. Although if they outnumber you 4 to 1 they are going to win the fight sooner or later anyway. Remember to retrap inside the objective too so they have to divert to find more supplies before moving to next objective- the idea is to make it as slow as possible for them, not to stop them, which you can’t.

Unless you are asleep then you should be aware of where their zerg is heading and that’s 4-5 nicely spaced out supply traps they just ran through on the way to the objective.

If the defence is awake then you should get at least a couple of cows into them before they reach their catapult spot and start building shield generators.

I’ve played at all sorts of hours and in all sots of situations, and the biggest issue I usually see is that a lot of people don’t think or plan at all and need a tag to function at all. Never ceases to amaze me how many ‘wvw players’ don’t carry a set of siege and traps or still use normal siege when superior is available, or won’t think to use it.

In our off hours I wonder off and build catapults against enemy structures and knock down walls whilst I see others milling around doing nothing useful as there is no comm badge for the sheep to follow and they don’t seem to think of even basic things to do, like flips camps, kills dollies, etc.

Sure, the enemy zerg might find me and my pixels get hurt.

Big thanks for the change. For me the most annoying bit was the invuln jades in such a small space bouncing me around the room on a ranged mesmer.

I was going to give it a rest for a few days but the new changes mean I will try it again later- hopefully this time I won’t d/c at the ’let’s talk endlessly after you won the fight’ stage, and I’ll be taking my short range weapon sets. That and lack of stability and lack of available condi cleanse.

It’s probably still going to be annoying as sustain on my mesmer is always an issue in longer fights. I think then I’ll run through it on necro and ele and come back here and tell you how easy it was as they will have no issues with the fight at all.

Went in with a power mesmer. Mainly ranged. Half way through to boss fight and already wishing I was playing something else.

Boss room truly awful. Why are Jades invulnerable in a space that small? Die, port back in, bounced around room, random marks on floor, spinning invuln jade…marked for skill and bang on the floor again waiting for respawn…

To add insult to injury…After dieing multiple times the clock ticked to midnight exactly as i left the boss room and…

BANG! D/C. Log back in hoping I’d have credit for the boss fight, but no. All because of some terrible chat scene before the mission ends. I’d ask Anet if they could credit the story bit but think it would be a waste of time.

To think i have to face the whole mission all over again if I want to finish it…

If I hadn’t done so much of the story on mesmer I’d take my necro in. It might be quicker to start the whole story over.

The key to good defence is to be prepared. Why would you stand and watch? Activate your shield generator, fire off your defensive trebs, catapults, ACs, laugh as the blob runs through the spaced out supply traps into the poison supply removing field of your treb. A small force can very easily make a blob have a bad day.

If you find the other side has a bigger blob, split up. Slow their blob by stripping it of supplies, have your defences ready and instead of waving like a wallflower on the wall watching it go down, go back cap and split team them so their zerg is useless.

Smaller defending forces can do plenty- just be mobile, be prepared to die quite a bit and suicide their siege. I’ve lost count of the number of times a couple of us have managed to wipe a blob’s siege by suiciding it.

Just because someone ends up playing on Deserted BL doesn’t mean they like it. Personally I hate the place, but I still spend time there with my guildies when we fancy some pvd or when we’re trying to drag the enemy blob off our BL and back to their own.

The old argument of ‘silent majority’ when no other argument works is being dragged out again by those who try and defend Deserted…

Maybe if Anet did a poll of ‘should we remove Deserted BL permanently and replace it with the promised new map within the next six month after extensive player involvement in the testing process throughout’ we’d see what the true opinion is, weighted against number of hours spent in wvw so people who just log in for ten minutes for dailies don’t get the same weight of vote as those who actually play the mode.

They manage to have guilds help during testing and design of raids…

Yes, this was really a huge problem..map chat was the map you’re in, team chat was from another map and generally those on ts knew which map people were talking about anyway or just pinged the location…

The vote for keeping DB was phrased thus ‘would you prefer to keep DB and we might work on another map, or vote against keeping it and we’ll never work on one ever again’.

There really wasn’t much choice.

And using the argument that they don’t like developing stuff because the players complain that they don’t work on anything the players actually want and instead work on fluff? How asinine is that?

The truth is they don’t spend any time on wvw as there is no wvw dev team. If they listened to the player base they would remove Deserted BL and revert to an Alpine until a new map fit for purpose was ready (after thorough testing during development, not ‘hey here’s a new map all finished, test it and no matter what you say it’s what you’re getting’).

Constantly defending the complete lack of any real Anet effort doesn’t make you look very intelligent, it just looks like you’re white knighting whilst not really beign involved in the game mode.

The facts speak for themselves- fractals, raids, spvp all got major updates or new areas recently and spvp got meta achievements. Wvw is still waiting for realistic achievement tracks 4 years later. One total fail of a map which looked like it fell off the pve map designer’s table and wasn’t tested by real players in development at all, and now no sign at all of ever getting another map.

So, pvp got meta achievements and a rework of a lot of maps, we got tonic changes!! Yes, that pressing issue has been addressed!!

The Plush Griffon Tonic has been reenabled in WvW.
The Reindeer Tonic has been reenabled in WvW, but the third skill has been removed and replaced with the fourth skill.
The Potion of Ascalonian Mages now functions like a transformation and not like an enhancement. It has been reenabled in WvW.
The Permanent Portable Provisioner can now be used while moving.
The Noblesse Oblige mastery has been disabled in competitive game modes.
The Gift From Scarlet has been disabled in WvW.

Hooray! They obviously know what is important to us….

And the only changes are made to the one map almost no one likes- Deserted BL. Shrines changes.

I’m waiting for when they put capture circles all over the map and make them count for the win..or have us all running around like Stronghold.

How the devs must laugh.

A key point being made is regarding the class build. A commander cannot tell a player is running a “good” WvW build simply by class identification. There are “bad” builds.

Yet at the same time, necros/guards/wars are always assumed to have good build by class identification.

Necros in particular get a complete pass, considering so many are running a fairly pointless reaper instead of a core wellomancer.

Guards are not even looked at as long as they dont bring the obvious tell of the taboo bigger marks and use a staff, lol

Hm. Kind of odd, no?

My necro is non-core and runs no wells (lots of shouts- I love the surprise that still gives people who try and jump me…) . Staff/GS, a lot of time spent in shroud. Unless we are short of well necros, then I’ll swap around..but not my preferred build. Massive aoe damage and finishing off the downed- don’t want those pesky downed getting up again!

Again, I see a lot of meta built necros with no clue what they should be doing when so totally agree with you that no one should get a free pass into a decent group no matter what class they are on. My favourite watching a necro is when they throw wells at random on a single target as well as all their marks and never swop out of staff at all! Or even more fun, a lich form necro, which is like painting a big target on yourself saying ‘kill me’.

There are uses for engis, mesmers, and even pew pew rangers. But they have to be decent at their job. Sadly most pew pew rangers seem to think firing off barrage into the front of the melee train is a good idea and will fire randomly at any target in range whilst they run away.

A good ranged snipe team is great in open field fights (or SM battles) where they are on their own tag and can call their own targets, which will be back line out of position eles, necro in lich form and other support classes. Well worth having.

Biggest problem I have with pugs in wvw is not so much the class they play as the complete brain shutdown that seems to occur as soon as they start following the tag- and the absence of doing anything useful at all if there is no tag on the map.

I’ve even had an engi with the job of pulling off 5-6 people from their zerg to try and kill him then steaming in with the rest of us when we have the numbers.

Not everyone needs to run a support build- but my pet hate is seeing eles in large fights with our players dropping like flies whilst they throw fire around and then switch to air to run away and then wonder why we all keep dieing!! Or worse, only switch to water when THEY are under 50% HP (and 75%of us are already dead..).

Generally I prefer staff eles in wvw to d/f just for the greater ranged utility.

help with a decent build for a ranged caster

Without armor and rune and sigil choices, it’s not a build.

You might also soon realise that your damage in shroud isn’t ranged to any extent and hence reapers aren’t actually that ranged.

Staff ele can be played as ranged but if built properly can be in melee range a lot of the time to benefit the front line from your staff water 1 healing.

For both positioning is key, listening on ts and making sure you hit when and where the comm calls (or be brilliant at positioning and reading the situation- usually if you have been a command and understand zerg mechanics).

I’d give you my builds for both but mine are non- meta non-standard that work for me. Others have tried them and fail miserably because they can’t read the situation or the group or realise what the real strengths are.

I’m frequently in water for almost the entire battle and almost certainly in water for SM battles where spamming water 1 saves lives!!

As a main monk or mes from Guild Wars I’m totally used to watching HP bars in group and on the battlefield and applying heals at the right time- there might be 20+ in the group but a well targeted water field will keep that small selection of people with low HP alive and prevent your zerg from falling down.

Necro will get more loot than water ele (at least mine does).

You can build a necro offensively without suffering too much, your ele should be built with more survival in mind- you’re zero use if a thief can down you (and you will be targeted).

I only have one problem with the map, and that is in order to reach the last vista (bottom right of map) I have to complete some terrible JP to reach a tube to fire across to reach the vista, and there appears to be no other way to complete it.

That’s the second map where I cannot complete because of a JP. last time it was the terrible molten garbage JP with waypoints that cancel if you log off or come back to try another day after quitting in frustration, this time it’s slatted bridges which are so easy to fall off for us ‘JP challenged’ people.

Boss fights were poorly/not explained at all and of course had some gimmick- and dragging a boss to a spot so you can kill things to damage the boss isn’t fun on a squishy when you’re trying to maintain distance!

Opening chests on the new map just seems a loot fest.

The lag in this game is something unbeliable

During lag my frame rate very rarely drops at all, as my machine is doing just fine. It’s skill lag we get (and everyone in the zerg reports it, casters more than others) not frame rate issues.

Perhaps if they hadn’t hived off most of the capacity to spvp then wvw wouldn’t have this issue- or even if they had a dynamic system that adjusted server usage to peak usage when necessary…

Engis don’t need any more help- just try facing a good one 1v1 and you’ll see why.

Basing condi reduction on healing power could be interesting, but will need a rework of lots of traits and balances in order to not make ‘power, toughness, healing power’ on a warrior type completely OP and impossible to kill.
