Amulet System in WvW

You can’t do 1 without limiting the player creativity.

Restrictions breed creativity because they force the player to problem solve. Unrestricted stats mean that players just grab the optimal, without having to do any problem solving.

For instance when doing necro theorycraft in sPvP I have to consider whether my desired amulet has precision or not. If it doesn’t I need to find to traits to get it, or just not take crit dependent traits, or I change what amulet I want.
In WvW I never think about precision. I can just grab however much I feel is necessary and move on. I never concern myself with whether I have enough precision to be using on-crit traits because I always have enough precision. No thought, no problem solving.

Besides I don’t see how a system that requires a substantial gear grind/gold sink every time you want to change some stats is “promoting creativity”

Also gear grind totally affects WvW. I play more sPvP because every time I try to get into WvW I get exasperated with perpetually losing every 1v1 because kittening optimized ascended peeps that take half the damage I do while dealing twice the damage. Nothing is more of a turn off than dying to a guy who’s auto attack hits as hard as your primary burst skill.

So despite all the reward tracks for spvp you can’t be bothered to find a decent build and equipment for going into wvw, then go in under prepared and get stomped on, and that’s a turn off?

You lose every 1v1 because you didn’t prepare. And the difference between exotic and ascended isn’t that great- maybe it’s more you’re not used to players moving off a cap circle, or having a better build as they have thought about it rather than ‘grab an amulet and go’.

I can’t think of anything that would make more people quit wvw faster than bringing in the amulet system- apart from replacing all maps with Deserted BL.

Healers need rewards too

Never had a problem with loot on my support water ele, seems to get plenty in zerg fights without being out of water almost at all- water 2 is good damage and tags nicely as well as being good control.

Doesn’t get as many as my crazed aoe damage necro, but then only a staff guard would beat it for bags.

Hence it’s not the connection- as people in several countries all experience it at the same time.

What does it take to lvl to 80 in wvw

It’s not like you need to actively play for the 80hrs… You just need to get 195 participation, afk in some corner and cap a sentry every 15mins.
Also, I don’t get the “Basically you are a walking lootbag and will hurt your server more than help” argument… I know plenty of lvl 80 dudes who are more useless than competent people in upleveled toons. Besides, it’s not like WvW is queued 24/7 so there is plenty of space for everyone.
“Oh, and the PPK?” Caring about scores in 2k17, lul…

I also know plenty of platinum level toons that farmed their rank or are just plain useless too. I’m sure we all do.

On a given skill level, an upscaled is less useful than a full 80. If the map’s q’d than having 10-20 people afk as you suggested isn’t much fun for the fights when one side has 10-20 people more in their zerg ball.

I also know that at certain levels and certain classes upscaleds used to have more stats than lvl80’s- having levelled several toons in EOTM/wvw myself. You can be quite useful as an upscaled and take part rather than afk- sentries, camps, tagging objects and my personal favourite which is putting down a catapult and ruining some walls well away from the main fights then letting the comm know when it’s down).

If there is no q (so do it outside of prime time most days) then be my guest and afk to your heart’s content.

Not bothered about the score, more interested in fielding full complement of people not hampered by a bunch of afk’rs.

It’s more an issue of people being useful if the map is full.

No – big zergs mean more information coming through your connection. Your PC might not be able to handle all the data coming though.

This still has nothing to do with skill lag unless you are using a 56k modem from the moon or something (and DX9 or your CPU has nothing to do with it either btw).

The server skill queue get clogged by client requests and take longer to send out responses, hence your skill activation lags. Nothing more to it.

It does make a difference. If you think it doesn’t you are kidding yourself.

Turn down your graphics also. That really lowers lag. The more information that comes in, the more lag you get.

People like to blame the servers but it is also 50% their machine.

I have been running with minimal graphics for a while. Made zero difference to the lags. Still got massive skill lags in fights.

I run an i7, 32gb ram, 6gb graphics card (TI) on a 200mbs cabled connection.

Last few days I turned graphics up to max and it’s all very pretty, and get the same annoying skill lags in big fights or across the map from them. It just looks nicer whilst I cannot complete a cast…

It’s not our machines or our connections, it’s the lack of power at Anet’s end as they have finite resources and allocate more of it to spvp so that has a chance of running smoothly and wvw suffers because of it.

They don’t really care. If they did they would devote resources to wvw until they fixed it and supported the game mode.

WvW Edge Of The Mist

EOTM doesn’t need queuing, nor would it help to randomly assign people (or groups of 5).

There are usually more than one instance of EOTM running, so try relogging a few times to get into a fuller one.

EOTM used to be good for karma farming, etc and is still a place for upscaleds to go, but you really should be trying to help your server in real wvw.

Go play EOTM if you plan to do this. Playing thief is a bad idea as you are likely to end up dead a lot without contributing much, but that won’t matter in EOTM.

You’re basically a walking loot bag as a low level toon. A free res for an enemy downed in zerg fights.

You’re not helping anyone doing this except yourself, and in fact are damaging your server.

You would be much better off instant 80 with tomes and then spend the 80 hours or so actually running a decent build with foods etc.

Anyone complaining about getting spawn camped doesn’t know how to play the game.

Switch to a different map en masse, stop feeding them bags. Or use another exit in teams of five. Or send a couple 5 man squads to another map and throw up a cata or two hitting their t3 bay and hills home bl at the same time.

Best way of beating a completely dominant zerg is to split to multiple targets (oh, and be prepared for your pixels to die…) and keep doing it- they will quickly tire of having to chase 4-5 players at a time around the map whilst using up supply repairing walls everywhere. It can be done, but most players will mindlessly follow a tag or sit in spawn waiting for a tag rather than trying to do something.

What the kitten is wrong with you people? Don’t you even want a long, epic battle? Why do you even play this game? You consider it a win if you kill a commander and the enemy zerg retreats? One bag! That’s what you get for killing a commander. Anyone in my guild gets yelled at for sniping because when you driver snipe, the enemy zerg just scatters and nobody gets any bags. How is that a win? That’s boring. And you backline, full zerk puggers with your selfish builds wonder why you get kicked from squad and the commander runs tagless to hide from you. It boggles the mind. If you haven’t yet learned the joy of winning a hard-fought battle without resorting to dirty tricks then you never will. I feel sorry for you that even in a video game with unlimited lives, you still consider a death to equal a loss.

Pin sniping leads to many bags if the headless chickens then disburse- you just wipe them all as they run away.

I’m glad I’m not in a guild that yells at people for using a good tactic.

Your derision of pugs shows your elitist attitude, but you fail to combat one of the easiest tactics to counter. As a guild you should practice full ts without a driver and without a comm badge up, then you don’t have an issue. As this seems too hard for you to grasp, perhaps wvw isn’t for you. Here’s a clue: clear voice comms. Second clue: armor colours or type of backpack. Train to follow one, if first driver dies switch to second driver, then third, etc. Clear chain of command. It’s not hard.

I used to command 60 people in 9 groups in 9 different parts of a map in another game and was built to draw fire and survive whilst commanding via ts, and having seconds that seemlessly took over in the event I was downed.

Rather than ball up and all follow one tag, try team splits, flanking, picking off targets and not just rolling into an enemy ball back and forth like most gvgs became.

Adapt to the enemy tactics.

Build preset, is this even considered?

I’ve often asked for this, being one of the best features of Guild Wars.

They didn’t bring it across to GW2. I assume they didn’t as they didn’t think it would be an issue as they assumed the only place people would change frequently would be pvp and that’s got ‘trinkets’.

As the main place it would be good for is wvw, I don’t expect to ever see it. How I miss being able to grab a template and apply the build!

It could work in GW2 just as easily and would make the game a lot more enjoyable. As it is now, switching builds is a long drawn out process of writing everything down then switching to the other build (which you wrote down) and then trying to find that last piece from wherever you put it.

I’ve no issue with storing armor sets- I keep two on most of my toons at least and bank tabs are full of other stuff, but the idea of of an armor and rings, etc storage would be great if accessable from anywhere.

Ori, here’s the thing. They wrote it. It’s broken. It’s their responsibility to fix it. The more probable reason it isn’t fixed yet is that it hasn’t been assigned to anyone’s work queue or it’s rated very low on the list of ‘to do’. My own opinion is that there is no one assigned to wvw, although Anet sometimes tell us there is a ‘wvw team’ there is zero evidence of that. Hence anything wvw related that doesn’t impact on the cash shop sales will be way down the other dev’s queue.

No one said it would be easy.

But if I left issues like this in my own work I’d very quickly be out of work and be reaching for my PI cover.

Hence why people have an expectation that bugs will be fixed. Having no information flow out of Anet on wvw issues doesn’t help in managing the issue either.

And anyone find it mildly amusing SFR is complaining about this when this was pretty much their patented night crew move for years. Except only vs 5 Piken defenders. Mind you, we were a scrappy five

If you have 20 … Suicide into those golems and respawn. Anything to kill them off. Stop being afraid of dying in WvW.

Yep, that was the amusing nightly golem rush. Build during the day and store all in garri/ starting points and off we’d go…

Golem Rush

I was there on the Piken side and this is true:

I suspect the comm on PS was bored and was making golems for fun and a rush.

Just simply looking to try something different in a dead matchup and alpha golems were a bit of fun. Tbh we so heavily outnumbered you it was just a matter of choosing how we would take down those keeps. “Clever” tactics would not have made any difference. I’m sure we would have preferred good fights on any border or EBG, but without those this was “an alternative”. Not a great one for either side.

This is not to criticise either of our opponents. It was only a few weeks ago Piken was suffering with low numbers – what goes around comes around and will do again! And earlier in the week we had some good fights, especially with SFR. But now SFR and Abaddon have understandably given up and much of the day it’s hard to find something to keep people entertained!

The real problem is this:

Piken Square had no reason to be put in the same bracket with our servers.

Last week Piken won an even more absurd number of skirmishes and according to Millenium we were gaining 124 ranking pts (pretty much unheard of at the end of the week!) and leaping to position 4 in the table. Then the new matchups came out and it seems no one in Europe had their ranking changed at all. Instead of a matchup with Riverside and FSP (which would have been “tough”!) or Deso, we ended up still 7 in the table and traded 3rd place Gandara for 9th place SFR. Crazy! Here we are again gaining 80+ ranking pts and feeling a little frustrated. Hopefully Anet will change the rankings this week and things will get more challenging!

ps. The opposite is happening to Gandara, who Millenium calculated were down 90 ranking pts last week and are down almost 100 pts this week. The only thing that kinda saved their matchup is they got picked to play two much lower ranked servers.

Personally, I respect you very much (your server) and I admitted from the beginning that in this moment you are far beyond our capabilities and for demonstrate somewhat to everybody the quality of your game, I will post a link with one of your dedicated guilds Blob, which we have dealt this week several times too and in the end they have gained our respect.

P.S. I am rather angry on Abaddon Mouth which instead of trying to attack you, and putting in this way more pressure on you, giving to everyone the satisfaction of a more balanced confrontation, they are still attacking us, obviously considering us a much easier target than Piken Square, but nah… I really understand them. Surely they are also frustrated and upset just like us and trying in their own way, to wear a fight they can win.

Blob stole my guild’s initials: Beings Lost on Borderlands (BLOB). I will never forgive them and always target them first in any fight:-)

Actually, been fun at times- at least they don’t run multiple thiefs in a pack when roaming.

To OP, yes, I know who Ogmaa is- he’s the spammer that keeping spamming- I’ve had him blocked for so long I almost forgot he existed.

I’ve been on SFR almost from the start.

Apharma, have to agree with your comment. SFR seem to have a whole bunch of headless chickens who will literally sit in the keep and do nothing unless someone has their comm badge on.

Due to RL I can’t get on ts and don’t tag up as I literally have to drop the game at a moment’s notice, but I still go off and flip camps or build a ninja cata against a wall or two then flash my tag when the wall is down.

Sad thing is that too many people can’t do anything without a comm tag to follow, don’t carry siege or disablers or supply traps and expect someone else to make all their decisions for them, and are too afraid of getting their pixels hurt.

Golem Rush

I have a question to Arena Net devs and ofc to anybody else know what I’m talking.
I play on Seafarer’s Rest (EU) which this week due to the famous glicko system was put in the same tier with Piken Square, (probably the next nr.1 server in EU).
It’s not for the first time but I’m pretty tired of searching a solution to golem rush. Do you think it’s fair/normal this style of playing?
I mean, how can 20 – 30 defenders of a T3 Keep stop a rush of 20 (Piken Square) golems guarded by 40 players. They flip all 3 Keeps (T3 each) in a blink. Each door was down in less than 40 sec. like it was paper.
My question is, why is no limitation of some kind if defenders are limited in building sieges accordingly? As a defender, you can’t build too many sieges in that place being limited somehow, but why there is no limit of using golems?
They use this time 20 Golems but I wonder, what if they come with 40 golems or 60, what then? What kind of defense should we use?
Something seems fishy to me.

When did you join SFR?

Server has been dying for ages, although a few signs of life are noticed sometimes if a decent comm and guild get online, but it doesn’t happen often.

I suspect the comm on PS was bored and was making golems for fun and a rush.

Without defences already in place, or some organised defence throwing siege disablers and then condi, cannon, etc then ofc they are going to flip whatever they want against 10 unprepared noobs afraid to get their pixels hurt.

Waving from the wall and doing nothing achieves nothing. But this is exactly what I see so many people doing, even against catapults placed near max range. Last night I suicided against 3 catapults and a treb on out nw tower four times before got them down- run in, casting, die, respawn, run back around back , run in, attack, die. It doesn’t hurt.

Or standing waiting for someone else to throw down a sup AC, or worse still placing normal siege down on walls.

Too many wall flowers on SFR these days.

There are a lot more important issues facing wvw than a fun golem rush.

Suggestion, reduce points from EBG

I read the OP’s post as ‘dear Anet, something is working, please break it’.

With the dwindling populations the bigger issue is having 4 maps to play on, only one of which the players gather on, and one that is mainly avoided by most (Deserted BL).

If there was a dev team working on wvw, then I’d hope they would work on reducing the number of maps and increasing the numbers on each map.

I think two identical maps modelled on something similar to EB but with 4 servers instead of three would be great fun and would break the current stale match ups. But it just isn’t going to happen in GW2.

Stealth and CC mechanics

I take any replies from a thief main with a pinch of salt…

Nothing wrong with having trailbrazers and dire existing, as well as several other types.

The issue is a lack of balance, and in particular the ease of use of stealth and the huge mobility whilst in use.

Most other games have a balance or trade off for being in ‘stealth’. This game has none, making it entirely in the thief’s favour.

Other issues on balance are continual block, invuln to name but two, not to mention dodging ad infinitum whilst your one decent damage skill on a huge cooldown is completely wasted.. Nothing should make it impossible to land damage on a target, but should cause damage mitigation instead.

There are so many balance issues that need working on. But a bit like the fabled ‘wvw team’ it seems to have disappeared into the mists.

Clipping recordings to only show when you meet pretty useless players doesn’t really show anything. Try showing all the times you died as well as those battles you managed to win. Then explain your build and selections and why you chose what you did and how it’s played.

As it is, it just shows you killing a few players and you say this was over a month?

Rethinking siege: It's time to go mobile

Two types of seige would fix the ‘put it outside’ issue.

Anything built inside a structure can’t move inside or out of it, so that is fixed siege.

Rams shouldn’t be movable. Anything build outside a structure would be movable except rams.

After movement, add a 30 second delay before firing for open field siege. ACs would need 3 people tethered to move, ballasitas 4, catapults 5, Trebs 6. Tethered people have zero skills. Post tether you are unable to use any skills for 10 seconds. No speed boost on movable siege so they move at slow walking pace.

So now you have tactic options (sneak a treb into position, or a bunch of catas) but it comes at a cost. Decide whether to bring some with you and plan a surprise for that enemy blob or build when you get there. Also makes small groups more powerful as they can bring supplies with them as well a prebuilt cata or two.

Another question entirely, in these days of condi bombing, why do so few people place ballistas to counter ACs and the condi bomb? Ballistas well placed can make a real mess of a larger balled up blob.

Those that argue against siege being used are equivalent to telling our army to only use single shot pistols instead of all the tools available to get the job done.

Of course what we really need is a completely redesigned map and a balance team..

Question : is Macro allow ?

Your only real issue is the fact thiefs can spam 3-6 skills in a micro second without any casting delay or cast time (because of ‘initiative’, a terrible idea) so it looks like they are using a macro (they could be, but there is no real way to tell).

With practice you can train a monkey to spam skills that fast. There’s no real skill in pressing pre set keys where there is no delay and little chance of being interupted due to root.

Is it good game design? No.

Is it easy to set up on a keyboard? Very.

It’s easiest on thiefs due to no cast delays/cast time on a lot of skills and the fact they can spam a set of skills almost instantly.

Lol good point but you can say the same for lords all though you can clear the lords you cant clear siege. I think making epi have a bigish tell on the person getting hit and have it as a channel effect 1-2 condi per sec aoe on a 4 sec cast time would fit well and fix that problem.

Actually, you can clear conditions on siege, try purging flames or using f2 or any AoE condi cleanse on them, wont work with 5 party/squadmembers around tho ^^ Just to clear the misunderstanding.

Did not know that but i was more talking about 5 target thing this is where the npc / pets coming into play.

ok, I know what resistance is. it does delay the inevitable, but that delay will give people time to use their condi cleanses or even just wait the condi duration out. condi bombs were a threat before epidemic was. pretty sure everyone needs to dodge regardless of power or condi.

Well that part of the problem there is no real tell on skills in GW2 on the person getting cast on there are tells on the players casing but in wvw how do you even begins to see these things and most ppl NEED to run on every thing cut off just to have the game playable. Dodging a snip skill is NOT a counter in wvw. Dodging in wvw is for red cycles. To have any thing in wvw that is unblockable is to effectively say it has 100% hit rate. Much like removing daze on DH traps because it was unblockable daze on an aoe epidemic needs to be weaker in one way or another OR become blockable.

I’d recommend going into the special forces training arena, with an necro, spawning a golem, and casting epi.

Epi has a rather large green/black explosion around the target.
I do appreciate it’s hard to learn tells in active combat, but once you know what to look for, it becomes a lot easier to spot the animations.

Edit: also, red circles can be sidestepped, having dodges left over for other skills is perfectly feasible.

With all the particles effects, red circles and other garbage littering the screen not to mention having to run in minimum mode to cut down on lag spikes and being able to actually cast anything, the above advice is practically useless in any large scale zerg fight- you’re lucky if you can even see the enemy toon, never mind tell what they are doing and spot a cast.

I’m maining necro this week. No epidemic on my skill set (I’m using strange build that is very effective and works for me).

But I will say, epidemic needs a small nerf to the number of stacks transferred. As it transfers so many conditions it should be restricted to 5 stacks of each. Still powerful when used well but not as bad as it is now.

Jumping over walls and gates?

Let’s go the whole way and go the nuclear option with parachutes.

You build a missile using 1000 supply that launches at the enemy keep and completely flattens it and kills all enemies inside. Takes 15 seconds to complete the flight and an early warning siren goes off when launched across the whole of the BL or EB. You can then walk into the ruins and cap it.

You build planes for 250 supply that carry 20 people and drop them off via parachute on the highest point of the structure you pointed it at.

Yes, I can come up with completely stupid ideas for wvw too like the one the OP stated (NB I think these are just as awful as the OP’s suggestion).

Deso dead? Strange, I logged my Deso toon the other day and it had 20+ queues on two maps at the weekend.

There are a lot less people on outside of prime time.

If you want to find enemies to fight, go and start flipping everything in the enemy home border- that usually gets you some action:-)

4. Pattern being ‘thief contests, poof, stealthed’. You stand in keep, run out place one stealth trap, wrong gate, contested, call more people to do the same- at which point the thief is winning, tying up multiple people. Not so easy when maybe 10 people on the map.
5. How? A decent thief won’t be killed 1v1, and you’ve still tied up at least two people who will die of boredom waiting at gates on the off chance they see the thief before he’s done his job.
6. Cold doesn’t stop him contesting. How many cold snares you got on your toon? Condi clear, all you did is delay him by 5 seconds. Still contested.
7. Been there, done that. I’ve even been the one to contest a keep, just to see how long it takes for anyone to be able to stop me and how much resources I could tie up. Generally ends up as several enemies, sup ACs, stealth traps, etc and I’m still contesting towers and flipping camps.

9. Your ‘solution’ only works if you massively outnumber the enemy so you can afford to waste people and resources staking out your WPs.
10. The proper solution I already described- 10k damage to a wall or door.

One change I would like to see is to not have WPs be contested until either a wall/gate is down.

Careful for what you wish for. Those swords can mean the difference between defending lords room and getting there JUST as it flips. One gate down and no immediate defenders … Might as well just hand it to them.

Have it affect WPs and attackers might as well not attack. People can insta port in.

I only want to change how the WPs are contested, not how the orange swords spawn. Those should stay the same, but it just doesn’t make sense for one person to knock a WP out of commission by doing almost nothing. And, having the WP still be uncontested until the outer wall is down gives that server more of a chance of getting there to defend. It might be too long, so maybe when walls/gates are at 50% might be better but still.

Also, if at all possible (though I highly doubt it), someone who hits a gate, then runs away mmediately as soon as you come up to fight them, rinse and repeat should never, ever be able to contest anything.

There’s strategy involved in the pizza delivery model.

Contest the centre keep on alpine and force your opponent to have to run all the way from spawn to get to a keep under attack. Any delay can mean victory if timed well.

I’m well aware of that strategy. I think its a bullkitten strategy that Anet should get rid of already. If you want to contest a WP then you should be putting serious pressure on that keep, not killing a guard or two that are roaming outside every couple minutes. That’s lazy and only requires a single person to hamper an entire servers’ ability to respond. That’s too much power put into a single person’s hands, too much. It’s just something that shouldn’t be happening. Go actually attack the keep and make a concentrated effort if you want to take down their WP.

It’s not a bull-kitten strategy.

There are many viable counters to it; the prime one being jumping out of your keep and killing the guy who’s doing it. Over and over. Hiding behind the walls and pew pewing with siege won’t stop them – it just irritates them and makes them more determined.

I can think of five different ways to dissuade it.

Your counter of jumping out doesn’t work. It’s a thief. Unless you want to tie up 5-10 people for hours on the off chance he comes back the likelihood is he will stealth and be out of range. Even if you camp both gates with people- at which point he’s won, as he’s tied up 10 players just to try and prevent him contesting (which is still very hard to do). It’s usually the same thief contesting other towers, capping guards, etc and sometimes 2-3 of them. If you do manage to kill him he’s back within 3 minutes anyway- if there is more than one of you spending time trying to kill him then he’s winning, tying up your players and making his team’s odds better elsewhere.

There is no viable foolproof counter to a lone thief contesting whatever he likes which doesn’t involve tying up many more on your side than his. It’s a broken mechanic that needs fixing.

If you’re playing in t1 or t2 then you probably don’t see the issue as you have bodies available.

Contesting should be done on damage to walls or gates, threshold set at 10k damage (ie one hit or so with a catapult/ram).

Scouting should be done by NPC’s so tactics would be send people around taking down NPCs on towers etc so your main party isn’t revealed if you want to ninja things until you get in – then Lord would reveal you anyway.

Wvw should encourage tactics and fights not karma training. When I’m ninja capping a tower with a couple of people the game should show us if an NPC spots us- after all, it might be my tactic to pull a larger force to us so our main force can attack SM or a keep or main tower elsewhere.

I’m necroing this week and gave up on condi necro as other classes can output stronger condis than necro.

Running power necro with staff/greatsword. Slightly strange build but then most of mine are, they work for me but others don’t like them/can’t play them as they don’t understand situational awareness and why I run what I run.

H0T is essential for most builds in wvw these days, the power creep and utilities are essential for a decent necro.

Watch videos, learn which toons to target and which to avoid, set macros, burst in 0.1 seconds while enemy is locked. Run away if doesn’t work and reset fight.

Or play cheese thief.

Or do what most of them do these days, travel in packs with 2 thiefs an engi and a mes and feel good when they manage to win against one.

I’m on power necro this week (having a rest from water staff support ele) and every sensible thief runs from me unless they have plenty of support. Condi type thiefs are my favourite bag food:-)

Vistas not granting invulnerability

Now if only the guy had been on the enemy side, ghosted through the outer wall exploit, leaped across to the inner wall using that bug/exploit, and THEN tried using the vista to keep the keep contested and be invuln, that would have been epic.

As it is, it’s just sad. Did make me laugh though.

Are people really that helpless or are they too clouded to open the wiki or google it? It’s more work to begin a new thread than google it to find out within about 1 or 2 minutes how this map works.

There are a number of people who have very limited time to play, and many MMOs that you CAN just get in and play without having to consult outside sources. If you only have 1 hour to play you want to spend that time playing the game, not reading about playing the game. And additionally there are probably people who will go to an empty DS and simply conclude that it is just not popular or not working. Why would they even think that they have to look it up online to “find out how it works”. Shouldn’t it just work or be made clear from within the game?

If you only have an hour to play it wouldn’t matter anyway. DS takes longer than that. Play on a day when you have more time.

Or accept that the game design doesn’t allow you to ever complete that portion of the game and be left feeling deflated.

A lot of people with jobs have ‘only’ an hour to play at any one time- perhaps after putting the kids to bed and their own bedtime. Hence why DS is such a bad design. The map itself should always be accessable to be able to complete it and grab the mastery points.

Locking content behind ‘mega’ events, timers, having to search outside sources, bringing in masteries locked behind all sorts of ‘content’ that looks like it fell off SMB8’s cutting room floor, etc to name but a few, puts people off.

Perhaps ANet could consider a guild flax fibre node, exclusive to guild halls as an upgrade item?

Just trying to think of some solutions.

That idea is more likely to turn into a sold node from the cash shop, get your permanent home instance flax node only 1500 gems.

I wouldn’t want to see it gated behind the guild hall.

GvG has come and gone. Making a big empty space in a big empty map isn’t going to attract players to it. They should have made guild battles part of the game from the start ( a major part of Guild Wars was the guild battles..) and kept wvw for more casual players.

As it is, wvw doesn’t satisfy either criteria and needs a major redesign and rethink, scrapping the 3 map idea and making one larger map with possibly more servers involved, up to five.

One day someone will make a game like that with voice comms as standard (that only permit you to join if you belong to that server and are active on the map).

Or perhaps GW2 should go the way of something like PW, which has many territories that can be attacked so the more you hold as a server the more battles you might be involved in. Schedule battles so they fit into various time zones so everyone gets a go. I still recall those battles as some of the best in huge scale battles and tactics although they only consisted of 3 possible paths a couple of towers along the way (which you could destroy/rebuild) and your main tower with turrets and a central orb, lose the orb you lose. It was the 60 a side that made them fun and tactically challenging, maximum two hour duration, monetary value to guild for winning (divided by 60 it wasn’t much).

Sadly there doesn’t seem to be enough willpower or resources for anything much to happen to wvw.

They don’t even make an attempt at balancing for wvw.

I’d post what I really think, but it would just get infracted/deleted in the usual fashion of these forums.

LS contains way too many ‘scenes’ which are just NPCs talking whilst you are unable to do anything other than listen. Pretty tedious first time through, totally offputting if you play more than one toon.

spvp got a couple new maps, same broken pvp mechanics. Bad balance.

wvw is the neglected area of the game and has got nothing of any real note for ages. Needs a complete revamp as it’s become totally stale- the server system was OK until megaservers came along at which point trying to attract players to play in your server became impossible and bandwaggonning is rife.

Fractals got some more maps.

New maps got JPs which are required for certain completions, so if you don’t like them (personally they are on a par with Himmler for me) then you either try and endure the tedium and annoyance in an attempt to do them without logging off/dcing/being called away etc.

New maps have yet more currencies that don’t store, so buy bigger bags. Apparently newest map needs some anti- freeze item or something that requires things to be collected so you can make one a day in order to play it

Skill lag- determining factor in victory

Today I had pretty much fun playing wvw until enemy zerg came to sm, then another one. As you can figure out lag was unbearable, I couldn’t even switch my weapons not to mention using any skills.

At the moment I would say the skill lag is determining factor in victory when you play wvw. Without lag we wiped few waves of enemy zergs, including one wave with around 15 golems (some of them omega) and we didn’t even have a comm! Once the lag kicked in our effectiveness started to slowly go down and in the end I don’t know if we finally defended sm or not, I just couldn’t take it anymore and left.

It makes me wonder, will wvw ever be fixed? Why does anet ignore the problem? They promised in 2013 the fix is on its way.

THREE YEARS HAVE PASSED AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED!!!!!

Wvw is basically about dealing with the skill lag. You don’t fight against enemy players, you fight against anet’s servers.

Step 1. check to see if a PVP season is on.
Step 2. If step1 is positive, then expect lag in wvw, as they ‘steal’ bandwidth and server resources from wvw in order to ensure their blessed spvp runs relatively smoothly.

Step 3. Step onto your warrior or guardian in times of lag, as trying to play any sort of caster is a waste of time and just extremely frustrating and not rewarding. or

Step 4. Play something else until step 1 is negative.

My staff ele can manage just fine on most things, it just takes longer than most of my other toons to kill things.

The annoying things are the numerous gates and not being able to access large parts of the maps at various times.

They don’t appeal as anywhere I’d actually go back to.

Eles and the 4 stats

What exactly are you trying to achieve? If you are looking for a roaming build then choose a different class in wvw. Ele roaming build becomes not very useful when in a group/blob and most group support builds don’t do very well solo or roaming. Not bad, just struggle to kills things whilst being able to survive most 1v1s.

I love dumping a water skill 2 on multiple targets – just plan ahead so they are where you put it when it finally drops. It’s a great tag machine.

One day when I’m bored I’ll list out my build on here.

Leap from outter all to inner wall in Garri?

Pretty easy to fix, just fix the outer wall so the distance is increased- a minor bit of rounding on that part of the outer wall and you’re done.

No doubt they will try this and leave kitten in the outer wall that can be exploited through…

E Frag, B Dust and D Ore sink needed

Get some eaters:

Empyreal Fragments – eaten by Star of Gratitude, Sentient Aberration
Bloodstone Dust – eaten by Mawdrey, Herta, Sentient Anomoly
Dragonite Ore – eaten by Princess, Sentient Anomoly, Sentient Aberration

I don’t even know where those eaters come from. If it involves pve then not likely, and if they involve a JP than not going to happen for me.

What we need is an NPC that munches all these spare currencies on the same basis as the eaters, or say 30% more for same result to give the munchers an advantage still.

VAULT Daredevil Damage

It’s just another example of the OP skills they have brought in or not fixed in order to work around all the buffs etc they had to go with in order not to have distinct healer/tank/squishy classes.

It’s all turned into quite a mess, with skills being able to hit 10k on a 3k+ armor toon with little to no cool down or instant spam several skills like thiefs can do, or CoR, or many other burst skills, or condi bombs.

There are so many skills and combos that need fixing for wvw. Sadly they have no interest in doing so.

Things to change- Moa

Yes, moa is OP as it replaces your skill set with something that you can use to basically run away or attack with if you use the skills it gives with a 3 minute cooldown…

Much worse than trying to hit someone who is in perma stealth, or something that goes ’invuln invuln invuln dodge dodge dodge while you have used your long casting skills on long cool downs then they leap in, stun lock you and wipe you using auto and one spam skill, or 12k CoR on a fast cooldown..

There are a lot more, worse, balance issues than Moa, which is frankly a gimmick. I’ve even killed mesmers whilst being Moa’d, those skills do good damage:-)

Desolation or Far Shiverpeaks?

FSP gained some guilds from other servers a few months ago now, who went there ‘looking for fights’. No idea if they are still there or whether they all bandwaggoned somewhere else.

Think of a plague of locusts and that’s FSP’s style during prime- massive blob. Oh, and probably a couple of maps queued and a guild group or two as well.

Deso is more of a casuals paradise (or hell?) but have better coverage and more smaller teams that tend to achieve more in points terms than a big mono blob does.

Pretty much every server is a bit burned out by the monotony in wvw and the lack of wvw balance or any sense that wvw might get some dev love before the next decade.

Am I the only one that thinks a group in a squad that loses track of it’s shot caller certainly is trying way too hard to be something they are not?

I mean why would your shot caller need to be found if they are not in the fight and if they are and you are not then why do you need to know where they are?

You’re obviously not paying any attention to the people in the squad and haven’t the mentality of living and dying for the team so why worry about it?

Have guild raids really got to the point where they’re 8 people prowling around like a kitten pretending to be a tiger?

This was my thought exactly, along with the fact they must surely be in ts, so it really can’t be that hard. Just form a group or two if necessary and follow the targets. How hard is it to follow ‘target the ele, south left’ or is that too complex for your 8 man gank party?

Have your shot caller wear something that stands out and have him use a certain skill as the opening if you are really struggling that much to follow a target call.

This is group pvp basics 101. You say you have specific people that do specific things and can rely on them and ‘noobs’ as your elitism calls them get in the way, yet you struggle to master basic targetting? Most groups I ran with in other games had a well drilled list of target priorities and a clear caller- all without the benefit of a tag.

Shield Generators need to go or reworked

It’s very easy to counter them, as Hazy has pointed out. There are also other methods- like being willing to walk around the back and come at them from behind and suicide on them until they die.

It still amazes me how many will run around like headless chickens doing nothing useful and then moan about how terrible siege wars are and how they can’t defend against this or that. Or cry when their AC is wiped off the wall.

Engage brain. YOU don’t die, it’s just some pixels. Grab 5-10 people who know to attack the siege not stop at the first available target and you can damage/wipe siege in 1-2 pushes if you are at all organised and not a total squishy.

One of my favourite moments from wvw was when we did this at the north BL tower- 3 of us took out their siege and shields against 40+. It helps to place a few supply traps too so they can’t rebuild. Four or five suicide runs but we managed it- whilst 10-15 people stood and waved from the wall of the tower too afraid to get their pixels hurt.

Learn to think, look at the situation, and act. Don’t wait for others to do it first. Don’t be a sheep!

Of course, if you know they are coming, supply traps can put a big dent in their plans but it seems 90% of wvw players these days don’t carry these or siege disablers and cry for someone else to place them…

This is the worst I've seen WvW in 4 years

The 211 scoring system has been a huge step in the wrong direction.

no, 2 1 1 scoring is a great idea, it stops servers fighting for second place while the “top” server runs away in points because they are being ignored.

But this doesn’t work as expected: Typically the server with the highest population wins because they have players online 24/7. The only way to catch up, is to make some points when this server has not that many people online. This has now become completely impossible due to the 2 1 1 change. As a result of this, on my server there’s only a handful of players in wvw after 10pm.
Take it back!

I find few people who are willing to form a small team of 4-5 and try and back cap or sneaky cap enemy stuff to alter the score- most no longer care, just wanting to join the maximum rewards/minimum effort of blobbing or mindlessly following the main comm.

Wvw is in a terrible state as it’s been more or less completely neglected for years, then balance was abandoned in H0T and the current metas are awful to face.

Whether Anet cares enough to do something about it and whether it wants to devote sufficient resources to it are entirely different questions. My suspicion is that they will do neither.

Theif and WvW

there is a problem with the ghost thief that most players here tend to ignore:

  • the traps will pit on you 5 different conditions at the same time which means you not only needs reliable condi cleanse but be able to blow you condi bomb cleanse or a cleanse specifically for inmob. Otherwise you’ll be stuck in the traps while the thief put more condis on you ramping up the damage up to 10k \tick in a couple of seconds.
  • Not all classes have reveal. Only reliable reveal are the DH traps and maybe thennew warrior shout. and thats it

Every class in game must have access to some sort of long reveal so the thief has to use the other tools they have at their disposal like evades or teleports

I guess both Engi and Rev don’t have Non targeted AoE Reveal skills….

And the Ghost Thief build uses 1-2 traps and normally only one trap the Needle trap which does not apply 5 conditions at most it will apply 4 two of which do not do damage. The second trap being trip wire which only applies Immob which again is a non damaging condition, and seeing how sitting in the Thief’s traps is t an issue since they don’t do persisting damage like Ranger or DH traps they are a one and done application. Here’s a Hint it’s the standing in Caltrops that causes most of the bleed damage which isn’t a trap..

it would be nice if players learned builds before complaining and asking for nerfs, this build should die in hellfire we can all agree on that but please know what you are talking about.

And this build is essentially a Condi bomb style builds so to combat it you need -wait for it- Condi Cleanses… if you want to stop Condi damage run Condi cleanses… which in any PvP/WvW style game play all players should have since Anet has a fetish with Condi Classes.

And how many condi cleanses and how long do they take to recharge compared to constant huge degen from the many condis the thief can spam whilst being virtually untargettable?

Or should we all come to wvw equipped with every single stealth reveal skill and condi cleanse in our skills and trees on the off chance we run into one of these pests, totally nerfing our usefulness in any other situation, just so we can possibly survive the stupid amount of damage they can do?

So, bots and people who spent 24 hours a day farming like mad have caused Anet to nerf the rate so much that more casual players or newer players will now get such a pitiful return that they won’t bother or won’t ever get enough for even one piece of ascended.
