Profession Locking Poll - February 16th 2017

I don’t understand how the matchmaking would be more “accurate” if yes win; it will be just profession based instead of account based, or am I missing something?

The idea is that, just because you are a great mesmer, doesn’t mean you know how to play a revenant well. If the professions were locked we could place you into a match that reflects your skill with that class.

This is exactly what I am highlighting on.

If I have an account based MMR, I feel trapped playing my best class; the fact that I have the ability to queue as another class and potentially ruin the matchmaking of other players overall harms MMR.

That is the biggest problem with Guild Wars 2 PvP; I really hope there is an executive decision made and this change is put through anyway.

In every MMO I have played, the MMR was separate per class/hero not everyone is going to be good with every class. You can’t even do ranked on other classes without expecting to lose a lot of matches because you can’t have a separate rank. It’s totally fun trying to learn new classes and losing most of your matches.

I’m coming back to ask for clarification from Evan. In both instances of the voting, are professions locked after the match starts? The wording suggests that one is locking you into the profession you queue as and the other allows for swaps during the prep period. The language “Players can adjust team composition during match warmup” suggests, to me, that you cannot swap after the match starts.

Read the posts on the first page and you will have your answer.

Appreciate everyone voting no and ruining possibly one of the best features to ever come to the game, having sperate ratings for each profession allowing you the peace of mind that you can play any class you want and learn it with expercience.

Instead you want people to reroll a class they likely do not have experience and cause balance issues of where someone is absolutely awful with that class compared to a true main of that class in that rating bracket.

Guardian player queues up, ends with 4 in his team. This guardian player doesn’t know how to play any other class, so he doesn’t swap as he would be more likely to lose than simply remaining. New system would encourage playing more than one class, but looks like that’s not going to happen.

If profession MMR is used for matchmaking, will we have profession ranks as well? Like your Engi is in Platinum, your Warrior in Gold and your Necro in Silver?

And if Yes wins, will switching to a different character of the same profession still be allowed? Many players use multiple toons per class to make changing builds easier. If changing amulets, runes, sigils and traits is allowed in warm-up, then switching to character of the same profession should also be allowed.

Yes. Profession specific ranking, and also its locked to the character so swapping is no longer possible even if this change isn’t made because they are stopping swaps after the initial 90 seconds.

Rankings will be profession based, so swapping or making a new character will retain the ratings.

This is why I hope YES wins, so that way I can play every class in ranked with peace in mind that I am not ruining the experience of other players because I am not as skilled with the profession as my main.

I’m not sure if this has come up, but your queue is already biased… So the data you get from it will be skewed in favor of yes. I don’t think I’m the only one that, upon reading “profession locking”, I figured this was a poll to lock professions during ranked, to avoid stacked teams. Something the community has been requesting for a long time. When I read the details I realized it was quite different. You should rename it to “Character bound queue poll”. It may be too late, but just reading people’s responses, it’s obvious some people are misunderstanding the poll.

That’s a huge problem with this poll. The wording is horrible, they need to explain that the advantage of allowing Single Class is the fact you get separated ratings for each profession ensuring more balanced matchups.

Someone in Gold playing an Elementalist, may not be as skilled playing a thief as someone who mains a thief in Gold.

So this player feels that he cannot play a thief, simply because he would cause a loss for his team by swapping to one when he clearly does not have the experience in Gold with Thief.

I really hope that this is simple majority. This would make GW2 heaven for me, I am a bit upset how people voting don’t even understand the difference and advantages that I am afraid the game designers may say they aren’t going to make the change because it’s close in opinion.

I believe the poll is unfairly worded. It would be best if it explained that allowing it to say YES allows new features such as rating being per class, allowing you to have separate rankings on classes that you aren’t experienced with.

Where as right now, if you queue ranked you do it with your best class. Swapping to another class would likely harm your rating as you are not as experienced.

So you feel trapped, always having to play a single class in order to win because you can’t play another class up to par with your current rating.

I believe you would get far more “YES” selections if you re-do this poll highlighting this.

Already fixed, the new code will balance the professions to the other team now you can see this updated on matchmaking page on wiki. It will also repool players if 3 of the same class ends on the same team and more.

Do I get it correcty that with the “YES” option, there is no way for me as a player to adapt to team composition? Say, i see we have DPS with no sustain before the match starts, there is no way for me to swap to support, even if this swap would not cause class stacking?

Then I find it a bad idea, it takes away an important aspect of the game and makes Solo/DuoQ even more a lottery because class is not identical with role.

You are correct, but there are trade-offs to both options. This is why we created a poll! If we lock characters on queue, we can do things like use profession-specific MMR, have profession leaderboards, etc.

Please do this! I feel trapped into playing a single class because MMR is set on your entire account. Having it profession specific gives me peace of mind that I can try to play a new class in ranked and improve on my own time with balanced matches instead of blowout matches in unranked.

Having a rating specific to the profession would be awesome. It allows you to rate which is your strongest classes and weakest ones.

I arguably felt that vale guardian was too easy, but the comunity seems to feel otherwise.

So OP is ranting about his internet connection dropping out longer than the grace periods. OP can run the same even again 2 hours later and loot the remaining chests in this super extreme case .

If they came back several hours later, the next meta would be active, so they could loot a new set of chests, not the old ones.

Though, TBH, feels like “doctor, it hurts when I D/C like this”, “well, don’t do that then”, is the appropriate answer here.

I think you’re missing the point here. He had disconnected from the game, and he was upset that when he had returned the chests were gone. He presumed there was no grace period or design decision to factor this scenario in.

Instead, he was actually disconnected so long that he had lost his place on the map (there is a grace, to prevent map switching) or simply the event expired. Even on maps that “won” the meta event, those doors close after a certain amount of time.

This would have happened even before the patch. If the doors closed, it doesn’t matter what map he was on; it’s done. There is absolutely nothing this patch changed in regards to that.

I don’t think people understand that chaos of what an offline mode would do in an online game. All of your skills in the game are scripted on the server most of the time and simply wouldn’t function at all.

Even if such an offline mode existed, they would have to cache all of that operations into the harddrive, allowing people to cheat in the game by modifying any data they please. They couldn’t allow anyone to get loot or anything in general while offline because of the fact that you could edit the loot tables yourself.

Yes it’s possible, but it is a LOT of work and a ton of extra security checks and completely impractical because of the fact the game is sold as requiring an online connection at all times to play.

I thought they said you could open chests in another instance. Of course, if that map hadn’t completed the event, I suppose there would be no chests to open. /shrug

Correct. But there is a grace period where you end up on the same map. You’d have to be offline for quite a bit of time to be put in a new map. Either this person was DC for a long time and put in a new map, or the rooms closed out (they do after 10 minutes of event completion I believe.)

So OP is ranting about his internet connection dropping out longer than the grace periods. OP can run the same even again 2 hours later and loot the remaining chests in this super extreme case .

Most importantly this issue he is complaining about would have happened anyway, even before the patch as he was DCD so long the map reset back to normal.

It’s helpful to see your own rating as it allows you to know how well your performing against others.

I actually just updated the matchmaking wiki to be up-to-date if you’re interested, but I think your question has more to do with rating accuracy than matchmaking. Time of day definitely has an impact as well as day of the week. If we had an infinite population always playing, ratings would be wicked accurate.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Matchmaking_Algorithm

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve also been getting dumpstered this last week. Maybe more people are trying harder towards the end of the season.

Is that true where you get a separate rating for each profession? It would be awesome having a unique rating for each class because I feel stuck in rolling just one class sometimes.

Also, can we get the percentiles of each rating bracket?

Also, the button for it is pretty standard. If I see a setting button, instinctively I’m just going to click it and see if there’s anything there of interest.

Even searching on Google I was able to find a wealth of information about how missions function.

Even when things are clearly explained with pop ups, people still complain it wasn’t explained.

Skill Rating is Accurate

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

Example- I have a 1300 rating, i go on vacation and am gone for 2 weeks. I receive -700 from decay.

If you’re willing to take a two week vacation during the season, then you’re not really serious about PvP. So, the Bronze SR accurately reflects your level.
#AirTightLogic

Also, sitting at 1300 – you’re pretty much an average player.

I think the biggest complaint with the current (and in my opinion way better) badging system is that only a few players get the shiniest badges.

I don’t like the idea that if you’re average, you can get silver. Being slightly better, you’re gold. You have to exceed top 10% just to get platinum, I think the gaps are just too far.

“It’s not fair that only the top players get the top badges.”

C’mon guys, do you really all want participation trophies? Doesn’t that completely remove the prestige of earning the top badges? Maybe there are ways to game the system, but let’s tackle those instead of taking steps back to S1-4 where everyone could grind to Legendary.

It’s not really Legendary if anyone can get it.

I only said the gaps are too far. Feel free to make legendary only accessible to top tier players, but going from “above average” to top 10% for next division is extreme.

I much prefer Overwatchs division split, platinum is average, diamond is top 25%, masters is top 10%, grandmaster is top 5%.

It used to be worse similar to gw2 where 99% of the game was gold or higher, and you needed to be top 10% just to surpass platinum. The gaps were too large, add more divisions or make different icons for each tier in good and silver, and so on.

I like the new system, but I’m not too happy with the divisions. A gold t1 player gets the same emblem as a gold tier 3 despite having a higher rating.

I don’t like the idea that if you’re average, you can get silver. Being slightly better, you’re gold. You have to exceed top 10% just to get platinum, I think the gaps are just too far.

How each division should be read?

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

I would say gold tier is within the top 15-25% of players. This is very apparent when you are in the heart of the mists. If gold was truly average, then you would see far more gold players overall than silver and bronze. Instead, you see dozens of bronze, a bunch of silver and maybe 4 to 5 golds in a map with atleast 100 people.

Gold is by far not even close to average, there are a lot of gold tier players that know how to play their class and rotate.

So I just got placed on my alt....

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

Pretty simple explanation.

You only won against people in low bronze or mid silver, then the matches you lost were against players in low gold. You were unable to win games In gold, thus placed in silver. On the flip side, it’s also possible you won matches in gold but lost games to low silver, thus losing rank in gold.

The win rate does not matter at all in placements. If you are only winning against players in bronze, you’re going to end up in silver not gold.

Ranked/Unranked is backwards.

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

Am I the only one that feels this way??

Yes.

The truth of the matter is, it does not matter if people are playing PvP for just PvE rewards. The whole point of a ranked system is to balance those players and separate them from the crowd so they are grouped up with the same skill level overall.

If anything, I see far more people satisfied with PvP than I ever had seen before, and a lot more people are playing far longer and much more matches even when not being rewarded as much.

Ranked arena requirements

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

Not expecting this suggestion to be well received by the community:

What should happen is that the rank requirement should be completely eliminated. New players, or players who haven’t played Ranked mode in more than one season, should start with 0 rating. Even if you ace your placement matches, you’ll still be in bronze coming out of them. This also solves the current ridiculous problem of people placing in Legendary straight out of placement. If need be, a new division could be added (“Iron”?) so that people have some experience under their belts by the time they get to silver.

Unranked just doesn’t prepare you for ranked mode. People run off the wall builds there, so you might be more (or less) successful depending on what your build is. These days half the matches are in Coliseum which you can’t even play in ranked. You get teams in unranked and none in ranked. And during the season, the unranked queues are bad: long queue times often followed by ridiculous stomps one way or another.

There should also be a smaller rating change for early placement matches. I’ve seen a rating shift of 117 points for a loss in the first couple matches, thats just too much, whether for victory or loss.

Bottom line, if you want people to get better at ranked mode then they have to practice in ranked mode.

No requirement is something I completely agree with. When it is ranked, if you don’t understand the map you will be placed with others that have the same issue.

Problem is though, people are unwilling to accept that they are bronze, or they’re better than silver or gold. They always blame their teammates.

Fact is though, the only common denominator in these matches is themselves, so yes they do belong in that range.

Ranked arena requirements

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

No.

Experience matters very little, there are players with Thousands of more hours than me and absolutely struggle in bronze.

A rank requirement should be removed entirely, the whole point of ranked is to balance the players to their appropriate skill levels.

Anyone can carry their team in bronze, so if you’re struggling to win in that range the issue is not the new player, it’s yourself.

There are new players in high gold and even platinum, because they are good at the game… Experience has nothing to do with it.

I have news for you, PvE players can actually be decent in pvp. Isn’t that a shock? That’s the whole point of the rating system. It puts you in your place, yeah your teammates may sick but guess what so does the enemy team have those same crap teammates (they have the same rating usually.)

Any plans to fix revenants?

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

That’s what everyone thought with Elementalist after their nerf for Season 4. But now they’re still meta. We should wait and see how they do in tournaments and see if they can take a place on enough teams and still perform well, like with Ele after the nerfs.

I thought Eles were nerfed into the ground, but turns out they’re still extremely viable at top tier play. I’m sure in the end, Revs will still be viable when played well. When played poorly, like most Revs were allowed to do because they were so OP, they’ll be crushed, just like a poorly played profession should be.

I doubt that.

They are practically useless in most situations. The only time they could be used is for cleaving stomps, but that only works if your team is good in the first place. A warrior is far better in terms of damage and survivability that taking a revenant doesn’t make any sense.

This is plain out wrong. DH’s gets absolutly destroyed by Scrappers aswell as eles. Even revs stand a pretty good chance vs DH’s.

The issue is though, when you have 3 to 4 of them on the same team you can’t really counter them at all. Scrapper and Ele both would struggle on DH when you have to keep track of 3 or 4 of them with spears and traps.

Seems very toxic in low silver. Hopefully others are finding some fun.

It’s toxic in every single division, always has been and always will be. And seasons bring out the worst in people. Forget it, I have a good idea of how good I am, not going to expose myself to the vitriol anymore. Even with map (and even team chat) off the guy dancing in your spawn gets his point across: “Kitty all you guys.”

Actually I totally disagree with this, in Gold Tier 2 there is very rarely any trash talking. Sometimes people will say GG facetiously but that’s about it. I’ll admit I may be a bit salty sometimes when I play as well, but the worst I will say is as a team.

I always blame the team directly, such as stating “We’re not doing enough damage.” vs “You guys suck.”

There is absolutely no benefit of me stating a person directly in chat that they suck. It does make sense to say something about damage and hopefully people pick up their game.

In the lower ratings, I’ve heard countless stories of trash talking; seems to be only in the very high ratings and lowest ratings where this is an issue.

Season 4 Ranked Matchmaking Change

in PvP

Posted by: Chase.8415

Chase.8415

This is how it should have been to start, though I’d probably go further and suggest that the losing team also get a varying spread that works in the same direction.

The whole point is to let pips catch up to MMR. If everyone on a losing team loses 2 pips, the effect would be slowed down unnecessarily. The best of the losing team shouldn’t lose more than one.

It’s also vitally important that pip safety nets be removed.

The problem with having a varying spread for losing is that it makes it ever harder for the people with low MMR to get pips. Imagine if they lost 5 pips for losing and only gained 1 for winning. I would personally quit very quickly as there is no progression.

Also, losing is a shared responsibility. For example, the top MMR guy shouting and flaming in chat is definitely not helping the team and should be punished accordingly.

I think it is fine for pips to be inflationary as long as better players go up quicker than worse players. This way, you could grind your way up (rewarding playing) yet get there in 20% of the time if you were good.

Bad players shouldn’t be gaining pips, so this is by design. Also the person who rages in team chat is typically not the highest mmr on the team.

Trash players talk trash.

It is so easy to carry in this game, you can literally 3v1 in the low mmr bracket so there is zero excuse for not being able to get out of it except get better.

I’ve played PvP every single day since it started, I lose every single day.

This strategy doesn’t really work.

Play a lot of games doesn’t automatically make you are great players, there are plenty of players spam thousands of game and still don’t know how to rotate properly.

I’ve never had this issue in the former seasons. I am asking for at least a chance to win, not complete blowouts.
