Oh … I think the hammer, mace and axe really missed the mark. The looks do not seem like they fit those weapons very well. Too much of their identify is lost.

This is quite true. I saw someone holding the “hammer” yesterday. At first glance it looked like the staff, he was just holding it with the wrong animation. :/ Of course it was a hammer, somehow..

I agree with this too. For the hammer I was hoping for something closer to the Lightening Hammer that the elementalist can summon.

I need my hammer to look.. ‘smashy’.

I can speak on this for someone who has come in first for about 40% of my total races. (until I started giving away first.)

I’ve found two back pieces so far and neither one were for a race I came in first at.

In fact, I found one after sitting at the finish line and watching 3 or 4 players pass. I figured it was karma.

I really like the game too, and there are lots of people like us. I actually have very few complaints about the game.

What you need to keep in mind is; people are always more vocal about what they don’t like, then what they like. I would even say the nay sayers are the vocal minority.

The people who truly enjoy the game spend more of their time in game then complaining about it. I actually only post here when I am at work. If I have a few days off in a row, you won’t find a post from me here. I’m too busy in the Sanctum.

Also keep in mind there are a percentage of players that are following the ‘sqeaky wheel gets the grease’ manta. They do like the game, and so they complain about the aspects of it they don’t like in hopes their complaints will generate change.

You’re right though, I don’t think enough players come here and tell the Devs what they are doing well, and that is an intregal step in constructive critizisum.

I dislike only the glitchiness it comes with. Loosing the lead because of lack of skill is my fault. Loosing lead because the game spazzes out on me is just annoying. I usually can’t do more than 3-4 runs before I just rage quit.

I agree that some of the glitches or rubberbanding can be annoying, but the good thing is there is no difference in rewards from what place you get in the race. As long as you finish the reward is the same.

It is nice to place high or even come in first, but at least if something happends that you don’t it isn’t a waste of time, the reward is the same.

More give me naow attitude. That isn’t what an MMO is. With very little effort a new player reaches the same stat line as a player that has been here since the beginning and has access to all the same content almost immidiately after reaching level 80. (IMO acsended gear represents a negligable difference.)

This is much different then an MMO with a vertical gear treadmil. You could reach max level and still leagues away from other players with tons of content gated by gear and unlocks that you can’t even access.

As of right now there are very few things that take any significant amount of effort to aquire in game. Those things would be Legendaries, Acended items, and now a few armor skins.

I for one am greatful for a few things that vetran players can be proud of achieving. And for the record I only have just over 3k points.

I’d say for the Keg Brawl that does take away the fun of it. Of course there is nothing stopping you from just scoring. The other team would either have to try and stop you resulting in the actual game being played, or you should just win rather quickly.

True, as long as you are willing to ignore the harassment in chat. I suppose you could just put all the other players on ignore.

Good points about Sanctum Sprint

Good points. Though I felt a lot better about finally winning first after trying over eight or nine games and coming in 2nd a few times than if I had blown over the finish line only to see people standing there waiting. That’s what happened one of the times people did stop at the end.

The real trouble is when players don’t choose to stop at the end and are subject to harassment by those who have.

Um, yeah I’ll agree with you some what there. I did eventually start giving away wins myself when players became angry which is not all that fair.

The flip side of that coin is I don’t think everyone has an equal opportunity to come in first. I have a great ping, and I’m great at the race. I’ve come in first up to 9 times in a row with only 2 or 3 of those being close races. Someone with a poor ping doesn’t have a chance really.

It doesn’t REALLY take anything away from me If I stop and /sleep at the finish line instead of finishing 1st. I don’t gain and special loot, status or points aside from seeing the scoreboard at the end.

It seems unfair that it is demanded of me by other players, but at the same time I see their perspective.

I found with the Zeinth skins that some of the harder weapon types to find good skins for were actually pretty nice.

Torch and Focus for example I have a real hard time finding skins that I liked, and I really liked the Zeinth ones. I don’t think though that these are the best in slot skins by any means.

Most of them are great looking, but depending on the rest of your gear and your theme, there might be some better fitting skins.

Also for me personally because of the still rarity of the Legendary skinds I’d prefer one of them any day over a skin everyone has.

As for the sanctum sprint, I have a large post on it in the Bazaar sub forum, but long story short, I don’t think it takes away from the fun at all to let others get first.

If you are second, or third, and you come to the finish line and see win people waiting there and you want to earn your first, then I suggest you wait there too until someone elses crosses and attempt your first in subsequent games.

There are some players who the achievement is more important thent he mini game, this will be especially true now that we are rewarded for acheivment points. It takes nothing away from that actual expirience of the race if people are waiting at the end.

I think the Zeinth skins are great and they really fit my current character even down to the color scheme. I’m running an Asuran Gardian right now. So the release of these skins has made me very happy.

However with everyone running around with them, it does make the feel a little less special, I would still like to hunt down rare skins to be able to show off a little.

Also I just don’t think these skins work with the theme of all characters. I know that my Norn Ranger wouldn’t really care for these skins for example.

As for giving away first, I was against this at first. I thought that people who wanted the achievement should earn it. As I said previously I could get 1st up to 9 times in a row. People would complain at me, tell me to leave, ect. I saw one guy consistently come in 2nd 3 or 4 times when I came in first. He didn’t say a word until the last time he said “A few more games until I get the frequent sprinter achievement and then will be it for me whether I get the first place achievement or not.” It dawned on me. He wasn’t enjoying himself. He wasn’t having fun with the competition between him and I, even though he was giving me a run for my money every time and I was having fun, he was doing it just for the points. Which considering we are rewarded for them now is a valid reason.

The next game I let him win. He was overjoyed, and thanked me profusely. He played his few more games and left. Letting that player win and seeing how grateful he was felt much better then beating everyone else all those times and coming in first..
..I give away 1st place now for the same reason I offer portals to the end of jumping puzzles. Not everyone enjoys the same thing and if it doesn’t hurt me to help them out I have no reason not to.

I have a very good ping, almost no lag ever, and even so I experienced occasional lag in the abilities and some rubberbanding. So that also tells me that no matter how hard some people try they are just not going to beat me if they have a pooring ping.
I have said in other posts that I think a lot of the content will be trivialized if they start designing it for people with bad pings. So that means I should be doing my part to help those people with the content that effects.

Anyway I know this has been too long of a post and if you are still reading I hope some of it has helped you.

General tips for the rest of the race would be to keep getting the shield buffs if you don’t have a grounded buff ready, ground any lightening attack that targets you. If you don’t have a grounded buff and you see a lightening about to strike you don’t continue to jump or use #3 ability, just stand still, let it hit you and then continue.
When you are in 1st place, the only buffs you will get are grounded (shield) and fake power up (attack). So if you have an unused grounded buff, do not go out of your way to collect shield power ups.

When you get the fake power up attacks place them in spots that are hard or impossible to avoid. Such as the lightening platforms. If you really want to maximize their effect, jump a few platforms and place one on the middle, that way the person behind you spends the time to make the first two jumps before he is knocked off and returned to the check point.
The most important part though is getting that early lead, which is what most people seem to think is luck. There is an element of luck to be sure, but if you grab every power up on the way up that first stretch 8 times of 10 you will get multiple aspect master buffs. I don’t forget you can have an aspect master activated and one in your bar waiting to be activated. That is a hell of a lot of mobility coming your way. If used right, no one can keep up with that.

When the race starts, if both buff (shield) power ups are side by side, grab them both. Half the time this will net you an ‘Aspect Master’ buff. If it does, activate ‘Aspect Master’, line yourself with the next shield buff and use your number two skill to grab it and fly by most of the pack at this point. What you are hoping for is a second ‘aspect master’ buff. Yes there is where a little bit of luck comes in handy.

If you didn’t get ‘Aspect Master’ in the first two buffs you collected, make sure to collect both buffs in the second set. Because you are collecting multiple buffs and everyone else is just zooming by you’ll be a little bit behind and this nets you a larger chance to get ‘Aspect Master’.

When you round the first bend there are two more possible shield buffs to collect. If you don’t already have an aspect manager waiting for you in your bar should take the time to collect them both.

With the ‘Aspect Master’ buff activated, press #2 immediately followed by #1 to launch yourself through the air over those hurdle obstacles around the first bend. If you need more ‘Aspect Manger’ collect at least one of the shield buffs after the first bend.

Now you come to the big wooden ramp. No matter if you have ‘Aspect Master ‘ or not you should use your combined #2 then #1 to launch yourself off it. Upon landing grab the closest orange crystal and do the same thing to launch yourself past the remaining hurdles.

Now you are running up a hill, grab a crystal and use #2. Here is where I usually past anyone else who is still ahead of me and gain my 1st place starting lead. Grab one of the small orange crystals, these buff your #2 buff, run a little bit and line yourself up to launch yourself right over the bridge through the water fall. This is the most important part of the race, I don’t see anyone doing this and they loose because of it.

I just want to throw my hat in on the whole Zepher Sanctum giving up 1st place debate. I’m starting a new thread however because I also want to include some tips I have learned along the way for those who are not lucky enough to race with people that will give up the title to you, and In case these tips are going to help anyone I didn’t want this information to get lost 2 pages into to an already drawn out debate.
I was on both sides of the fence on this issue which is why I want to share my experience. If you don’t want to read the whole post, here is the skinny: There is nothing wrong with giving up first place; it can even be fun to do so.

But for those saying that getting first place is simply a matter of luck. I disagree whole heartedly. Of course you CAN get lucky and get first place, not likely if you are racing against someone who knows what they are doing though.

I first time getting 1st place did come by luck. I was actually behind and got two consecutive light travels brining me to 2nd place, and then first place made a mistake and fell. That was my third race. So I didn’t really get to feel the pressure and frustrating of working towards first place and not getting it, or losing it to someone already with a title.

Getting first place consistently and consecutively, however, is not luck. I have placed 1st up to 9 times in a row. That pretty much throws the luck theory right out the window. If you would like tips on how to get first, please read the following:

Hello fell Guardians,

I just hit 80 with my guardian coming from playing a mesmer but I am a fairly new player all around. When I hit 80 on my mes I just bought the Balzahar temple set with karma and stuck with it. I found I did OK all around, but I want to be more serious with my guardian.

I am thinking I am going to need multiple sets for the different things I do. Trait wise I am running 0/5/30/30/5. For utilities right now I have been using Judge’s intervention, Purging flames and Smite condition.

I want to play a high DPS guardian. I don’t want to be super super squishy or anything but I would like a high focus on damage.

Please give me your recommendations for; A dungeon armor set..and a WvWvW armor set. Those are the two things I care about doing well.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Though the animation does not change I would argue a heavy armor wearing could ‘shrug off’ the same damage that a medium or light armor wearer would be dodging.

As for dodging being limited by endurance, there has to be some limitation to it considering it gives you full immunity to new damage source while you are dodging.

Actually I remember one guy having an intressting point at this “issue”. He said, scamming, thieving or what ever you want to call it, could actually be a role you take on as a player. After all you´re playing RPG fantasy game so I think the point is valid and the players who scam or thiev dont really brake any rules since they are after all using the “mechanics” that are at our disposal.

Negative. If you role play a theif then you ‘pretend’ to steal. If you are actually misleading players into sending you items through the mail with the promise to send them something in return you ARE a theif, you are not role playing one.

Dont really know how to respond to this without making it more complicated then it really is. If you steal you´re a thief no matter what. In real life there is legislation to stop it. In GW2 there are no formal rules afaik that tell you not to steal. If you can take advantage over the system that ArenaNet has given us to steal items from people I dont see that as something illegal, and yea you´re a thief in an RPG game. Thats what initially pointed out.

There is no specific legislation yet because the law has not kept up with technology in this regard.

There is a big difference sitting down in a paper and pencil RPG and ‘Stealing’ something from your friend that doesn’t really exist or have any intrisic value and stealing in Guild Wars 2.

In Guild Wars to my items and gold can be given a value in real currency.

Not to mention it is only role playing if both parites agree. Pretending to trade with me via in game mail and then not following through on your part of the bargin and calling it role playing is a weak attempt at justiying your actions.

There may not be legislation against, but there are moral implications. Maybe not for you, but certainly for me. Stealing is stealing and you are not fooling anyone except possiby yourself calling it anything else just because it occurs in a virtual enviroment.

Did you play it? ( I didn’t.), did you also play a target dependant system like WoW? What do you think about the differences between the two systems?

In one you aim yourself, making the combat far more action packed and making it easier to miss, on the other one you just lock on and press buttons.

Yeah it seems like GW2 kind of went half and half. I don’t know that I would like to aim all my abilities in an MMO myself, but the few targets we do have to lay down are fun and add some dynamics to the combat.

We don’t aim our auto attacks and such, but we can dodge them which makes that side of it fun. To me its a good mix.

I don’t think a lot of players are looking for a realistic experience to firing a bow and/or gun when playing this game.

If you were realistic about firing a long bow a player might realistically get one or two shots off at a charging attacker, using your system because the attacker is moving one would probably miss, the other would be blocked.

Long Bows were used for group volly fire at a mass of targets, they are virtually ineffective against one two or even 3 targets.

The dodge roll in GW2 allows you to react and prevent attacks already launched at your character. Very different from ‘staying out of the red circle’.

You are talking about PvP. I am not talking about PvP. Either way, other games present multiple options for negating, deflecting or avoiding attacks. They are admittedly, different in this game…but new? No.

It is not PvP specific, have you ever been multi-fired on by one of those inquest golems? When you dodge, even though you are still ‘hit’ by the animation, evade comes up. You are not just moving out of the way.

Yes all games have damage midigation, but it is not the same as this. This is as close to a target-less system as I have seen a mainstream MMO go.

Do you know that in WoW when you swing your big 2-hand axe around you only hit the target you have selected unless specifically using an AoE ability?

All ranged boss attacks that don’t involve the red circle are homing. They can not be dodged. In guild wars you can walk behind a pillar a rock even another player and he will get hit instead of you. That is very different then most MMo combat systems.

In real life……

/facepalm

What’s wrong with that? Some real life principles and concepts can be effectively applied in game design.

In real life, as ranged weaponry has become 1. more affordable and accessible 2. easier to use 3. easier to manufacture 4. more reliable and 5. more deadly it has displaced melee combat. Infantry today use their knives mostly as utilities rather than weapons. We can take some of the advantages and disadvantages ranged weapons have had through history and current practice and combine them to create balanced combat that does not start with the premise that “ranged weapons should always do less damage.”

How many arrows can you carry in real life?

Ranged vs Melee balance

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: CryxTryx.9208

CryxTryx.9208

What you need to keep in mind is that while ranged weapons might be taking in these new disadvantages, they would also be gaining some substantial advantages, such as much greater damage (I would give the Ranger’s longbow 3-5x its current damage, increasing its default range to 1500, but give its 1, 2, 3, and 5 skills a 600 range minimum while making the 1 skill stationary)

When ever you start an debate about MMO mechanics with “In real life..” you’re on the wrong track.

Reducsing long range accuracy and creating forced misses is going to lower the over all dps of ranged weapons even more. Misses combined with dodges in blocks could mean you could go with out doing damage for an extended period of time. It would also be an incredably frustrating mechanic.

I disagree. The original Guild Wars, I think, had much better balance between melee vs ranged combat (even though the same philosophy still applied). With the proper setups, ranged weapons were capable of doing quite substantial damage (Barrage + splinter weapon = holy numbers galore). Additionally, different types of bows, depending on the situation, had tradeoffs. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Bow summarizes it better than I can.

No one is using a sniper rifile in GW2, no one is even using a scoped weapon. Having a close range dead zone would create incredable class inbalances and any time a gap closer was used it would force the ranged user to switch to a melee weapon. This is helping ranged balance how?

Arrow carts in WvW have minimum range, but nobody calls them useless.

What I would do is a radical overhaul of 75% of the combat mechanics in this game so that “dead zones” or “ineffective zones” would not be a class imbalance. We can go into that another day.

Adding ammunition only adds tedium. No one actually runs out, it just takes up space. This also doesn’t add balance at all. It only adds an extra requirement for using the ranged weapon at all, not balancing it while it is being used.

That’s because ammunition, in most games, “just takes up space” rather than being meaningful. If the ammunition limit is meaningful while keeping ranged weapons appropriately powerful it can be balanced.

I’m not sure how the arrow cart comparison is relavent. I don’t feel I should even have to point out the reasons why.

The only way that I could see a meaningful way to add ammunition to combat is to make a reload time similar to an FPS. That could be an idea, personally I think that may make the comat feel a little clunky but it could work.

You can in fact dodge in EVERY single MMO I have ever played, you just can’t “dodge roll”. In fact in every single MMO I have played dodging is a key factor in staying alive. Avoid the red circles, move out of the bosses telegraphed attack etc etc. There is nothing new here except an animation.

No sorry you’re wrong on this one. The dodge roll is not just an animation, it doesn’t just move you. It actively negates incoming attacks. This is not something that can be done in many MMO’s.

In World of Warcraft when someone launches a fire ball at you, or shoots and arrow at you, you are hit by it. You can run as far as you want, you can jump, you can spin, but if you are in range and in line of sight when the attack is fired it tracks your characters movements and hits you.

In many games as long as you are in line of sight and range when the attack is launched you can not even ‘line of sight’ the attack as it is in the air.

The dodge roll in GW2 allows you to react and prevent attacks already launched at your character. Very different from ‘staying out of the red circle’.

There seem to be quite a few people that thought they were going to be playing an MMO with zero grind. This boggles my mind.

Ah, that explains it. Try reading here. And read my other posts to see how you are wrong when you claim there hasn’t been “one viable solution” to the issues currently afflicting MMORPGs.

Did you read that thread you linked me? I know you posted in it, a big long rant about how you despise grinders and describe them as donkey’s chasing a carrot in front of their faces. You did not offer a single solution though.

The OP as well only complained, he wants money removed from the game and the game content to be designed purley for the fun of it with no reward system in place.

Sounds dreamy when you put it too paper. Imagine.. a game desgined purley for the fun of playing it. That however is not a suggestion, it is an ideal. He then compares boss encounters in GW2 with boss encounters in Final Fantasy games.

With the exception of Final Fantasy XI, the Final Fantasy games are not MMO’s. They are single player games, they run through a stream lined story from beginning to …yes, you guessed it, END. Oh and one more thing, there is plenty of grinding in many of the Final Fantasy games, you grind expirience, and certainly currency and you earn rewards for each and every kill.

So please, describe to me an MMO concept with zero repeatable content.

GW2 is a very young game and for what it has done and how it has improved so far they are doing a great job. I hate to break this to everyone who printed off the manifesto and are using like a pass/fail check list, but that document doesn’t mean anything anymore. It was a statement of intent and to put it simply, things change.

That sounds more like an excuse to accept subpar content. Two years is nothing; it’s the same thing as if Marvel announced they are going to release a movie about Iron Man, and two years later when the movie is released people learn that, despite being called “Iron Man”, it’s about Ant Man.

If ArenaNet promised in their Manifesto more than they could deliver, it’s still their fault for not being careful enough with their promises. There is no amount of fanboysm that can change how they simply couldn’t achieve what they stated as their goals.

I consider very little in GW2 sub par content, so I not making excuses for; or accepting nothing of the sort.

I agree with you that if GW2 promised more then they could deliver it would be their fault. I disagree that we are at that point yet. Correct me if I am wrong but Guild Wars 2 is barely a year old. It is not 2 years old.

As to your movie anaolgy, it is poor, very poor.

As for the link I’ll read through it, but judging from your input in this thread so far my hopes are not high for what you consider viable solutions.

Female VS Male Appearance/Height

They should’ve just allowed both males and females the same liberty of being adjusted to the same height min/max. I see no purpose in creating the difference. I also agree that it’s a subconscious form of sexism with roots in the idea of biologically based patriarchy considering it would’ve probably been easier to use the same height template for both sexes and yet they didn’t. It doesn’t bother me though.

It is quite possible that the art for the female armor was easier to design around a smaller frame because it does mimic western fashion and since western females are in fact shorter, on average, it made is easier to mimic western desgin.

If you want an argument for sexisum look at the human female armor desgins. They are sexy. There you have it.

Is this sexist? Not in my opinion, all of the females that I know in real life that play guild wars love the ‘cute little outfits’.

This is really not a forum for this type of debate however I will say that male and females are just not the same. They don’t act the same, they don’t dress the same and many of them wouldn’t want to. Should they be paid the same as men for the same roles? Yes. To create an argument for sexisum over the size of your MMO character is just silly.

Many people jump at the chance to get on a soap box and fight for someone elses rights because it makes them feel noble. Half the time the group whoes rights they are fighting for don’t even agree with the argument.

When I started guilld wars I had a few sudo real life friends already playing from several servers.

They all recommened that I join their respective server.

Tarnished Coast sounded piratey to me and I like pirates so that is what I chose. Pretty silly right?

Turns out I made a great choice!

The character creation in Guild Wars 2 is far from restrictive.

There is no sexist or malevolent intent here, it is simply a design choice. You are creating Tyrian’s not humans, this is a fantasy world, not reality.

Every race and creed is not represented in character creation, this does not make the game racist.

I am a very skinny guy. 5’11", 135 pounds on a good day. The least buff human male is in much better shape then I am. I can not create a human male character to accurately represent my real life proportions. I am not offended by this, and I would be silly to be.

This is the only game I have ever been a part of where there is this small percentage of the community that doesn’t take the game for what it is, but tries to interpret this manifesto, and comes to the forums crying ‘breech of contract’.

Any plan or intent no matter how well thought out is rubbish once it hits the battlefield, most people know this.

GW2 is a very young game and for what it has done and how it has improved so far they are doing a great job. I hate to break this to everyone who printed off the manifesto and are using like a pass/fail check list, but that document doesn’t mean anything anymore. It was a statement of intent and to put it simply, things change.

Sure there are a few spots in there that can be interpreted different ways, but as I said above, it is pretty futile at this point to argue back and forth what you think that document means. A net isn’t looking at it anymore, and neither should you be.

The other side of the coin is that there are a lot of MMO players here that have completely unrealistic views of what this game was suppose to look like, or for that matter, what it was even capable of.

There seem to be quite a few people that thought they were going to be playing an MMO with zero grind. This boggles my mind. It is actually impossible to develop MMO content fast enough to keep ahead of the fastest player or even the average players consumption rate. So what does this necessitate? Repeatable content.

For those of you that are calling any repeatable content a grind well theree you have it. You can’t create an MMO that plays like a single player story with a continuous story line because those games have something an an MMO can not, an End.

I find a lot of posters on this form complain about the current state of the game, yet they can offer nothing in the way of a solution or even a viable suggestion.

I have not seen one viable solution from these nay sayers as to how to design and MMO with out repeatable content.

Just like the people the complain about the current Legendary system. When asked how they design I can paraphrase each response down to “Make it easier.” or “Give me naow.”

I see a lot of people coming to these forums with nothing but threats involving them moving to the ‘next great MMO’ which I am sure they could basically copy and paste off the forum of their previous MMO. My only advise is to save that file on your desktop because you’ll be needing it again.

Good for you man, and I know the gold is alluring but don’t get caught up in it too much. Remeber why you were forging to begin with. I thin you should make at least one Legendary before you keeping playing the forge.

It does seem like you got the short end of it by chance. Salad down is one of the more underplayed zones.

When you do go over to metrica if you have not already things should change a bit for you. Inquire about the Fire Elemental event and take part in it, if you are on a high pop server you should meet most of your server there.

So why is there no way to craft a precursor?

ColinJohanson.2394:
We still plan to do both new legendary weapons, as well as a clear path (on top of the current random chance) to gain precursors which players can see their progress and understand how much work they have left to do to gain it.

It’s highly likely the precursor concept will involve playing varied different content all over the game to gather numerous content specific materials that are combined together to make a precursor.

We do also want to maintain that chance you could get lucky and earn one earlier through random drops, so when we add the new system we will not remove the current one to ensure players have multiple ways to gain the items. Also with the upcoming update to WvW, there will be a chance players can earn precursors from the WvW rank reward chests as well.

precursors, precursors nowhere.

I’d hate to be that guy but I think a lot of this has to do with the cash shop. I’d rather pay $15 a month than deal with RNG for my entire career in GW2

That might make sense if you could currently buy Legendary weapon skins in the cash shop, or even weapon skins at all.

Since you can not I don’t know how you are relating the two together. They are mutually exclusive at this point.
