The OP is not telling you how to play, he’s telling you how you should play for a better community. You’re still free to agree or not. Learn the difference !

This is just symantics. I suggest you read your posts before sending them.

“not telling how to play, telling you how you should play.”

That is one in the same friend. I am telling him that it is not his place to tell me how I should play, I’m also advising that his well intentioned ‘suggestion’ may do more harm then good.

I’ve seen more then a few players get very ugly toward inexpirenced in dungeons, especially AC. Making a blanket statement that players should not reject these lower levels, is to me, ill advised.

If you quote me or respond to one sentence I wrote, don’t deliberately cut the sentences where it suits you.

Since you did what you did, I assume you’re here to argue without reading what people write. So with hope you’ve not already pressed the reply button and cut this part, good luck with proper arguing in the future.

The worst is probably that you say I’m playing with semantics (when it actually matters, for once) and you play with the lowest level of semantics ever.

Seriously?

Here is your entire message “The OP is not telling you how to play, he’s telling you how you should play for a better community. You’re still free to agree or not. Learn the difference !”

It doesn’t contain a whole lot more then what I cut. And it doesn’t change a thing.

Simply put, the players that are already excpeting these low levels into their groups are the right players to be doing so;

those who are not, are not.

First of all, this is really only an issue with AC. As it has a very low level requirment (35), yet the difficulty is on par and in most cases above the other dungeons.

Secondly it doesn’t make me or anyone else elitist to want a full group of 80’s to go through a dungeon. It just depends on your goals for that run.

Some of us don’t have a whole lot of time to play and we just want to complete a quick before having to log off. If I have 30 minutes to complete a path I am now going to allow lower levels into the group that I am creating.

If I have a lot of time one day and I just feel like having fun, teaching and taking my time through the run, I will go on my guardian so I can carry better and let who ever wants to join my group.

Similairily when I am playing a lower level alt I simply don’t join explorer dungeon runs unless they are will my guild.

OP it is not your place or anyone elses to tell others who they should play with or try to obligate players to play with lower level characters. Many of these lower level characters are not new players, they are alts that want easy levels and to be carried through the dungeon.

Also, it takes a certain kind of person to be able to each a low level character through a potentially difficult dungeon. Obligating players to include low levels in their groups could be more of a negitive expirience for a new player then being booted up front.

Consider these things when looking down on us from your high horse in white armor.

Question on Completing Personal Story

in Personal Story

CryxTryx.9208

Na, there is no real trouble betting a group for this. The one smart thing they did do about how this works is that the personal story ‘quest’ is different from all the other personal story instances in that it is competed with the the Arah Dungeon Story mode.

So you get up to the last step in your personal story and then you just group for Arah Story Mode.

The good thing about this is that it is not just people who are trying to complete their personal story that are looking to group for this, it is people who want to unlock Arah Explorable mode with that character as well.

As a general rule Story Mode dungeons are harder to find a group for then explorable mode, but it is not rare to see people grouping for Arah Story, especially now with the LFG tool in game.

On top of that, we still have to convince stubborn players, that our deleted progress must be compensated. People that question our right for compensation whose motives are entirely based on envy: “If I can’t have it, why should you”.

My highest fractal level pre-patch was only 39 so I don’t feel the reset took a whole lot for me. I ddidn’t feel I lost anything that couldn’t be easily achieved again just by doing the same content I would have been repeating anyway.

However I still remember the shock I felt at seeing the update that frac levels were going to get reset. I knew about and and was friends with some players work long and hard at raising their fractal level well beyond the precieved limit.

They did this mostly for bragging rights and to ‘see if they could’ because there was no real loot reward to speak of for doing this.

Anet has done some questionable things in the past, they have produced a few things that made me raise an eyebrow, but all in all I have supported the majority of content and changes that Anet has made to the game.

This was the first move that I gasped at and said… “Wow, bad form Anet, bad form.”

Even the old school games new this. When ever you take something away from a player that they have earned, for whatever reason, you need to give them something in return.

A title, a trophy, a mini – It doesn’t have to be big it doesn’t have to be functional, but you need to reconize their achievement publically.

I always throw back to Asheron’s Call which was a very neiche, little known MMO that did a lot of things wrong, but the things they did right made the game my favorite MMO of all time hands down.

If they nerfed an item out of existance, people who already had that item got to keep the original. – - Now that is on the extreme side of things because you are letting players keep items you have acknowledged need a nerf, none the less they understood the principal. – Unlike GW2 gearing up didn’t come easy and they didn’t take lightly taking progression away from a player.

There was once a world wide PK event. Each server had their own separate but identical event. Flag yourself PK and defend an enemy NPC to prevent the release of the games main villian.

The catch was there were players on both sides of that fight. Players loyal to the villian that wanted to see him released and players loyal to the hero that did not. On my server, Thistledown we had the only group of players dedicated enough to take shifts and protect this NPC around the clock.

Well it was coming to the patch deadline and the developers did not consider the fact that a server would atually be able to hold out. They couldn’t advance the story line and leave one server out of sync, that NPC needed to die. So they were forced to intervene. They contacted a real player in game and convinced him to betray his server. They buffed him using developer buffs and escorted him with a developer toon and went in there – killed the defenders, killed the NPC and ended the event.

Now the devs took something away from those players that day. They took away weeks of hard earned defense of that NPC. No one was told the story had to go one way. But they did it in a creative way, and they created a memorial on all servers reconizing the efforts of those defenders by name for all to see.

They also created this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnj9afinaYI

What will you do for these players Anet?

I have no objection to the concept of a free for all PvP server other then the resources that the developers would need to spend on it. My feeling is it would go just like the open PvP servers in DAOC went. Super popular when opened, enough so that they opened a second server of that type. A few months later both servers were ghost towns and all the resources were a waste.
They could of course do a simple thing to see if there is an interest and offset the cost. Offer a special gem store PvP server only transfer service, you pre-purchase it, and if there is enough sales, you create the server. If there is not enough the players get the gems restored to their existing account

Ha, that is actually a pretty good idea. Almost like ‘kick-starting’ a PvP server. In that case you could even add anyone who pre-purchases to a restricted access sub foruml and let those players provide feedback on its development.

You’re right, I mistaked the level 80 who swapped, or was swapped for you. Either way.

You posted this thread in the manner of ‘teaching the level 80 groups a lesson’, and my point is that the only thing you have taught us, is to keep recruiting only 80’s if we don’t want to spend over an hour doing 1 AC path.

No has said for a very long time that it COULD be done. As I said, there is video of an all 35 group doing it and I don’t even think they wipe.

Just because we CAN do it doesn’t mean we should and it certainly doesn’t mean we want to. Thank you for enforcing that feeling today.

A Darkside server isn’t for the faint of heart people. First of all lets discuss this in mind of the fact that it will never happen, so I’m just bored and having fun here.

In Asheron’s Call – Dark Tide server that is how it worked and it was tons of fun. You just have to play with the right mind set.

Now there were certain items you could aquire that did not drop on death, and there was also a system to manged extactly what you dropped.

Because the higher ‘vendor valued’ things would drop first players would stock their inventory with common, yet expensive items, many of which you could just buy from merchants. They were referred to as ‘death items’.

You made sure you had enough of these in your inventory to at least die a few times in a row with out dropping anything actually valuble.

It is the risk that made the game so exciting.

Large guilds did hold entire towns and there were battle lasting days/weeks on a massive scale when another guild would try to take over said city.

Some guilds would form alliances others would become ‘kill on site’ to each other.

Simply adding this into a game like guild wars wouldn’t really work because it wasn’t created with this type of thing in mind.

Asheron’s calls open world was also much bigger and it wasn’t as easy to travel from place to place. There were actually secluded areas where you could level in relative safety because not many players would go there.

Dungeons were not instanced they were part of the open world and they were big enough to get lost in. You could spend days killing creatures near the end of a dungeon with out seeing anyone. But when someone did come you had to be prepared to fight for your hunting spot or abandon it.

Ah the nostalgia.

Also notice that in the first screen shot the OP is displayed as a low level character, yet for the boss he has logged on his 80.

Considering you can solo this boss with a level 80, I’d say this doesn’t count as finishing with low levels. (Plus, there’s actually 2 level 80s there at the end — they’re the only survivors.)

Right I missed this last detail.

So this party took over an hour to complete an AC dungeon path and still had to switch out to two level 80s at the end to complete and this is suppose to be a ‘take that’ to groups that request level 80s?

I don’t consider an update with a temporary mini game an expansion..

Heh Star Trek would have gotten my vote here, they permanently added an entire new faction, new races, new ships, new zones, new story lines, updated their ui. How does a temporary couple zones update win over that? I guess Star trek needed to add a megaman zone in order to win this huh.

Pretty much this.

Quality over quantitiy?

This isn’t about the quality of sab (which is subjective to begin with). This is about a temporary mini game not being worthy of being called an Expansion. Eye of the North, now that was an expansion.

Well I hate to bring the bearer of bad news but the whole award process is subjective, and your opinion of SAB is no less subjective then my opinion of it.

So lets get pointing out that all of our opinions here are subjective.

SAB is reoccuring. So sure you can call that temporary, because it is not available all the time, but it is not gone for good. It comes back, and each time it does it comes back bigger and better.

The rewards it adds to the game, achievment points, titles, skins and minis are permanent. Considering that horizontal progression is suppose to be the name of the game here, that is considered content for many players.

With the introduction of Tribulation mode there was a new teir of skins which I very much enjoyed aquiring.

All subjective opinions and preference? Absolutely.

All that being said. Who are these guys anyway? No awards have been ‘won’. From what I can tell this is just a single websites review.

They list no criteria for these categories. I wouldn’t get to upset if you don’t agree with these reviews I don’t see their subjective opinions being worth any more then any of ours.

Well then in my opinion, an expansion does not involve a mini game that’s only available when the devs want it to be. An expansion is new zones, story, professions, skills, weapons etc. But that’s just how archaic my thinking is..

I would tend to agree with you. As others have mentioned, there were pretty slim pickings in this category to begin with.

The Star Trek expansion was mentioned but again, the reveiwer may simply have not enjoyed or even played it to begin with.

Personally I didn’t even know there was a Star Trek mmo..

What CryxTryx said.

Most people run dungeons for the gold or the tokens, in which case they want (and in my case, I expect) efficiency. Your screen shot shows 3 dead party members, meaning you guys barely killed the boss. Which means the run must have taken a while and involved several wipes.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind running with sub-80’s. And by running I mean switching to your alt once the boss is dead. I’ll hold the cutscene

Also notice that in the first screen shot the OP is displayed as a low level character, yet for the boss he has logged on his 80.

This leads me to believe that the boss was not downed on first attempt.

Based on the clock in the screen shots the dungeon also took over an hour to complete.

First screen shot shows the party already past the spider boss at 4:36 and the dungeon was completed at 5:19.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

CryxTryx.9208

Here is how vertical grind of Ascended gear, combined with horizontal progression don’t fit well together:

  • With horizontal progression in the form of new skills: New builds will arise and some old builds will become unviable/non-optimal. If that means grinding for a new set of Ascended gear, people are not going to be happy.
  • With horizontal progression in the form of skins: With exotic gear, if you want an alternate look, you (easily) get another set of gear and put your new skins on that new set. With Ascended, are you really going to grind out an alternet set of Ascended gear? Thus:

Every player who gets Ascended gear represents money lost for Anet because they are less apt to buy skins. Think about that, Anet.

Why do I need a second set of Ascended gear to skin it?

If you want to have two sets available to you (to fit your mood, for example).

Of course, you can always keep old, unused skins using transmutation crystals to move them to white gear as storage, but that is a HUGE pain, not to mention costly. I’d guess there are many people who simply won’t bother to put skins on their Ascended gear because of these issues:

Before Ascended gear came along, I personally had two stat-wise identical exotic daggers with different (expensive!) skins. Now that I have an Ascended dagger, I haven’t bothered with skinning it at all because I know it’ll be a hassle should I decide to reskin (without destroying the incumbent skin).

Ok but you are doing a lot of assuming there by copy/pasting your play preferences over everyone elses.

I for one did not like how trivial is was to aquire end game gear. I didn’t like the fact that I could have all the gear I needed, including multiple reduntant sets if desired with in minutes of leveling a new character to 80.

I usually have a few sets of armor on me for a variety of reaons, and I will continue to do so.

Can I just take a few tokens from the pile and throw it at an NPC to get a brand new set of armor? No. But I’ll still get my multiple sets of armor, it will just take me longer, I’ll have to put a little bit of effort into it. Spend some time playing the game I already like to play..

This will not discourage me from buying gem store skins..

I think guild wars 2 needs a dark tide server.

Here is the gist of it.

All zones are PK Free for All zones. There are no safe areas.

You drop items on death – the most valuble items from your inventory go first up to a certain value, if your inventory can not provide the required amount you will start to drop equipted items.

I don’t want a title anyone can just throw on , I want a title I had to earn.

I don’t know why Anet is currently so frugal with their title giving.

I wish my Liadri complete had a title, hrm.. ‘Consumed Darkness’. There.

I wish some jumping puzzles had titles.

Solo’ing Lupi should have a title, or killing him as a group with melee damage only.

I’ll be the first to critize a poster who says, “Don’t work on this content I don’t like, instead put those resources to unrelated content I do like.”

However, there has to be a better use of your resources then developing a leaderboard for Fractals.

Part of the problem you are having is trouble differentiating players at the same level? Doesn’t that tell you that the content doesn’t need a leaderboard in the first place?

What is it going to come down to? Number of times a Fractal level is completed?

You have a hard cap on Fractals for crying out loud. How long before the leaderboard is just filled with everyone at max and the only factor is who got there first?

Cut your losses and develop something worth while.

Edit:

Actually if you want to salvage this thing into something useful, you should turn it into a regular dungeon leaderboard and include things like;

Speed Runs

Solo’ing bosses

Cater to your customer base. Who are the people that are going to care about the leaderboards anyway?

Hardcore players that want to be the best, and be reconized as such.

Do you already see any of that type of activity going on related to dungeons?

Take a look at the dungeon sub-forum….Yes you do have one.

There are sizeable threads dedicated to speed run videos and solo boss clear videos. Players have been creating their own leaderboards. Its all right there in plain sight.

This really isn’t that hard Anet.

I understand the intent with the contested dungeons and I am sure they looked great on paper. I am also sure that there were cool for the first people to do them and discover they’ve unlocked a dungeon, but I also think it is time for them to change, or just go.

It is a cool ‘idea’ that the world is dynamic and players can gain access to new parts of the map by completing dungeon events, but these events repeating over and over again not only ruins immersion, but it just becomes an annoyance.

Rarely if ever does a group actually get together and complete the events required to unlock a dungeon, they will just guest, or at least one person in the party with have it available.

I think events like this are best left for introducing new content. If you release a new dungeon or a new zone or a new jumping puzzle, have server wide event that takes an update cycle to unlock the thing and be done with it.

I joined just to get some Lupi action in. Fighting him with pugs ranging is an added level of difficulty, since they make lupi walk from you on phase 3.

I think you might be on to a new service here. A just Lupi killing service.

For all you guys that are able to consistantly solo down Lupi, any PUG that is stuck at Lupi could pay you to join the PUG, kill Lupi, and then leave, or finish I guess, whatever works.

I can just picture someone joining and telling the PUG to stand in the corner and watch as you solo it down.

The fact that it is screen shot worthy for a low level group to (from your screenshots) squeeze off that final boss kill only proves that 80 only groups are justified in wanting all 80’s.

Actually, no they are not. I don’t get what the deal is with all these whiners complaining about how bad necros are. Necros are good if you know how to play them. You want a faceroll class? Go play a warrior. Otherwise, learn the kitten class and quit all your QQ.

Your hostility seems to be misplaced, in this thread anyway.

It has nothing to do with not knowing how to play the class. The game as a whole is not complicated. I am more then capable of playing any of the classes;

For most min/maxers our effectiveness with in a group is not determined by our skill cap, it is determined by the raw numbers a class is capable of putting out;

I don’t like going into a group knowing my effectivness is capped much lower then it otherwise would be a different character. What is worse is that if the general perception of the class to the public is low people will be less willing to group with me based on my class choice alone.

It doesn’t even matter that my skill with the class with make me just as effective as any average player, LFG doesn’t take the time to get to know you, they see a Necro and move on.

I’m not the type that needs to play the top classes, but I also don’t care to play the classes that people would rather not group with.

Guess I was spoiled playing a Mesmer/Guardian/Warrior first..

I just started a Necro, I thought I would use it for WvW (Which I am not all that interested in), and Fractals, which I quite enjoy.

I was under the impression that Necro’s were quite good for Fractals, but everything I am hearing about them almost makes me think I shouldn’t bother.

Ascended vs Exotic (Math)

I disagree that it matters in dungeons, or Fractals with the exception of very high level Fracs.

Sure it ‘makes a difference’ but it does matter.

Dungeons get smashed in all exotic gear with plenty of room for error. The difference that Ascended makes in dungeon may make a difference to speed clear groups and that is about it.

I’m happy to play an inquest and blow up this reactor. Sounds fun. I could care less about the Abbadon story.

You write your original post assuming we all have the same preference as you. You would be wrong.

Drag... ores instead of Emp.. fragments

Here is the real problem that IMO takes preference right out of the equation.

Dungeons are ‘on demand’ content. Anyone can find a group to at least one dungeon at any time. You do it and you get your fragments.

World Event content are timed events that you have to be at the right place at the right time for.

Sure there are tools online to help us find those events which makes it a little easier, but I still can’t go earn Ore any time I want. I have to wait for events, most of which don’t give enough ore to be worth my while.

Dragons and Temples are the only events that give enough ore to speak of. On Tarnished Coast Lyssa and Dwayna have been bugged for days, and Blathazar is rarely completed leaving me with one temple and two dragons that can be done reliably.

I would very much like another ‘on-demand’ way to earn ore. Fractals would be great.

I don’t expect everyone at Anet to be able to play well. Heck I don’t even expect the Devs to be able to play well.

But if they don’t have some testers they can use to showcase the content that are are experts at the game, that is where they loose my respect.

How can I have faith that you will develop content with the players in mind if there are no ‘players’ in the company.

I was honestly shocked when I read that update. My personal Fractal level is only 38 so I am not loosing a whole lot. I know there are people out there who have worked thier fractal level well above 60 by repeating odd number fractals.

The only reward for this was challenge and the reward level. Everyone knows that those players were not repeating those Fractals for the rewards.

Now sure those players are good enough to get their Fractal level back up there. I undestand the thought process by starting everyone back off at 30 for the leaderboards but this is not an esport.

You are taking hard earned progress away from players for nothing in return. This is a mistake.

Yeah necro isnt really worth taking for dungeons. However they can be pretty good for fractals. And if your doing high fractals being able to switch between zerk and rampager/condi on the fly is something you should make sure you are able to do. Or just stick to rampager in fractals i guess. :P

My build will be getting some pretty big changes next patch, so I may actually post a full writeup this weekend.

You know I’ve been looking for someone other then my guadian to do fractals with as well. This could be another good alt for me.

Warrior for Dungeons
Necro for WvW and Fractals
Guardian.. can do whatever he wants, lol.

I’ll be looking forward to that write up spoj; I better get leveling this guy.

If you WvW in zerg raids, you hit the jackpot with a Sentinel weapon. You ought to use it for your guardian (greatsword or staff) or warrior (hammer) depending on which one you use more.

I think I’ll put it on staff for running/tagging ect. Any suggestions to a sigil for this job?

I posted a similar thread on the WvW forum. Sounds like that his the place for a Necro. I will take a look at some dungeon Necro builds in case for some reason I want to take him on a few runs, however I might as well stick to my warrior for dungeons at this point.

Use it for a guard staff if you don’t want to transmute the skin.

You mostly use staff on guard to run and pull things, may as well take some survivability on the weapon, you don’t really ever use staff to attack unless it’s tagging stuff for stacks, anyway.

Yup its either that or I’ll give my Warrior a rifle. I almost never range with him, unless I run into a world boss, or if a PuG really can’t melee Lupi. So I might just throw it on that.

Where do Necro’s stand in WvWvW effectiveness?
(The reason this is not on the Necro forum is because I believe the WvWvW posters here, can answer this question better then potentially bias Necro players.)

I already have a Mesmer, Guardian and Warrior at 80, but for some reason I have an itch to create a Necro.

I don’t really want to waste my time though if they are useless. I understand they may not be ideal, but is there a place for a well played Necro in WvWvW?
