Are Tyrian heros considered magical items?

in Lore

CureForLiving.5360

Magical items would most likely be items with concentrated magic in side of it, so for the ED it’s probably a nice easy source of magic. However as we’ve seen with Mordy they (or maybe just him) can also absorb magic from the ley-lines.
As for the PCs being magic… yeah I guess. All professions except engineers use magic either consciously (elementalists who train and hone their magic abilities) or unconsciously (like warriors who use it to supplement their abilities). The very fabric of reality if composed of the mists (which are also magical), and in the last few LW releases we know that the mind and soul (or maybe just ghosts… although the dichotomy is a bit tricky) are also magic.
However I’d say that magical items have a far higher magical content than say some random NPC, and thus would be the primary focus of the EDs.

Logan succeeds. Deemed the rightful King of Ascalon, he’s now free to marry Jennah like he and she have always wanted to do

For me whole premise for their star-crossed-lovers thing was always extremely silly. She’s the queen, either it’s a constitutional monarchy in which no one really cares what she does because it really doesn’t matter or it’s an absolute monarchy in which case she gets to make the laws in any case.

That is incorrect. Being “voted” in doesn’t make you “rightful” when it comes to nobility.

Communist!
But on a serious note, ‘rightful’ is debatable…

In practically every story that involves a prophesy, the prophesy turns out to have been misinterpreted and in a plot twist the prophesy is fulfilled, but not the way everyone was expecting.

Having Rytlock become “True King” is perfect story-logic.

More accurate the legend being true was such a cliche that people (attempting to be smart) decided to the the prophesy twist, of course they’ve done it so often that it’s actually a cliche itself.
Anyway the best frame of reference we have for how GW2 prophecies work is probably GW1, in which the prophecies tend to work out pretty much as intended but then was twist (yay Abaddon is free, oh look a couple of adventurers have shown up…).

Yet as our characters live and breath humans and charr co-exist, humans and charr… living together. No luck to it, the practice presents itself.

Counter point. Only good example we have is LA, the Orders and the Pack humans and charr work together but one could argue they’re ability to do so is as a result of existing hierarchies and formal structures. I think most of the LA charr are gladium who left the charr society and thus had little choice but to learn to co-exist (or die alone).

Human Gods: Real or complete myth?

in Lore

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

Although that technically happened in GW1, could the argument continue that it was all myth?

Possible, and it would be an interesting twist. However we have no evidence supporting this so at the moment the assumption is that GW1 was real-lore-wise.

We actually fight two of them in GW1 so yes they are real.

Abaddon and Dhuum right? Although I think Dhuum’s godliness as a slight question around it.

Reaper of Grenth at the end of the personal story is again just an avatar and could of course be wrong/lying.

The definition of an avatar is an incarnation of a being. If the reaper really is an avatar, then the god must actually exist.

As a defintional remark, you are correct. However, how do we really know he is an avatar?

He looks like one. He acts like one. We’ve got told he is one. We don’t have more informations at most places.

It’s all a clever ruse you see, the reapers got together and decided that being an avatar would so like increase their street cred.

While the human gods as we know them may or may not still exist, their power is eternal and indestructible. If one of them was, say, killed in combat, and nobody took up his mantle, we’d all be dead as it would rip reality to shreds.

But what if they die somewhere distant in the mists? I think the example you’re referring to is Abaddon and I think he was already sort of in Tyria when he died.

Thank you everyone for mostly restoring my faith in the human gods.

Just one piece of evidence regarding avatars that nobody mentioned is you can be turned into one via an Idol of Balthazar in the Priory storyline “the ghost rite” http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Avatar_of_Balthazar also in a charr storyline. In the Priory version, Gixx while disregarding belief in the Gods when directly asked otherwise seems to talk about the god as if real.

The gods as god is in question, not whether they exist. The Asura don’t believe in gods but their understanding of the eternal alchemy does allow for extremely powerful entities to exist. The Charr with their history (the Titans) also believe that powerful entities exist, but they don’t think of them as gods either (in fact I’m pretty sure they think they could probably kill a ‘god’ if need be). Norn had their spirits and the Sylvari have the Pale Tree.

Sylvari other tree

CureForLiving.5360

So its almost sure now, that trees are created by dragons sleeping beneath them, so there is good dragon under Pale Tree, and another tree above Mordemorth, and Sylvari are not corrupted and thats dragons failure, or they are gonna trigger, like Cylon’s FF.

It’s not almost sure. We haven’t gotten any additional info about slyvari this season yet, and nothing at all to suggest there is a dragon under a tree anywhere.

But with the current episode ending on a: lets go visit the Pale Tree, we might be getting a bit more info… That’s actually what’s got me most excited. Although judging from the trailer it doesn’t look like we’re going to get to the Pale Tree in the next episode

Done him a few times, but yeah rewards aren’t that good (well other than the bonus chest, but that’s just 1 a day) so you’d make more geodes if you did the devourer queen and twister champ (and Haze if you time it right). So lately not been seeing him done so often.

Needing to find 30 out of exactly 30 means that if you just miss one anytime on your search, you’d need to search all over again. Its not fun.

If you miss one coin you don’t need to do anything. If you want an achievement that says you found every single coin, then you have the option to go search for every single coin. If you’re doing things because you think you need to do them despite them not being fun, then maybe you have some sort of disorder.

Something like OCD, I guess?

The primary “issue” from my perspective rests with Taimi. She is too happy-go-lucky with the way things are acting and it sets a completely different mood than what I would believe the setting to be.

She’s a child, an Asura child (and a gifted one at that) so that makes her pretty smart, but being a child she’s also pretty dumb too.

Rather than our heroes being a bit scared or brave or determined to vanquish this threat, I feel like our heroes are making this threat out to be a joke. I feel like our heroes are not actually determined to kill this threat but instead would much rather sit around a campfire with a keg of ale singing Kumbaya. (Spoiler here) So Marjory’s sister dies, lets go into a cave and start giggling and laughing! That doesn’t seem very realistic.

Pretty sure they weren’t giggling and laughing. Also it’s called gallows humour, it’s actually realistic. Far more realistic than everyone batman-ing it the whole time.

You have to aim for PG to get away with that so I don’t understand why the plot elements aren’t more mature.

Just to get on the same page here, what does mature mean? Clearly not what it means to me (having to pay bills and go to work).

Yeah, I had gathered as much. I think the really interesting thing to see will not be the WHY but rather the HOW and what happens after that. How will it impact Tyria, and especially Ascalon. The Charr have been in war for more than 250 years with the ghosts, how will it affect everything else..?

Well firstly you’d have the largest army in Tyria sitting around with not all that much to do. Oh sure they’ll still need to fight the Branded, the seperatists (who I never really though of as a massive threat) and the flame legion (who seems to have lost most of their leadership) but a pretty big chunk of them is going to be freed up. A bunch of battle hardened warmongers with nothing to do? Sure that will end just fine.

Too much Single-Player content

in Living World

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

Don’t get me wrong. I do like the story in this living story season… But I feel like that this season is even less group friendly then the season one.

I guess zerg content isn’t group friendly? Well I guess if your idea of a group is dungeon or raid that yeah I guess it wasn’t.

Dry Top content is not about cooperation. Ok, there are a lot of people that help with the event. But there is no need to prepare your build accordingly to other party members. You don’t need to be on team speak or communicate in any other way.

Yeah I guess we’re going to keep on doing the definition thing. In dry top you have people working towards a common goal (favour rank), one could say that they’re in fact cooperating. Now however if your definition of cooperation (as it seems to be) is something like dungeons or raids, then yes dry top isn’t giving you the cooperation you want.

I’m asking for content that revolves around cooperation. Not just to be able to do something with other people.

Dungeons and raids then, cool got you.

Scaling does not resolve anything.

I’m asking for content that revolves around cooperation. Not just to be able to do something with other people.

So you basically want content that locks a somewhat large part of the players out?

Seems so yes, dungeons and raids.

From what I understand what the OP wants is a dungeon in the living story.

Or a raid.

Like current story instance design locks groups of more then 5 people out.

So raids then? You prefer 10 man, 20 man or dare I go so far 30 man? Or you more the open world raid type guy (tequatl, wurm, marrionette)?

SPOILER Living story ripped from Mass Effect

Mass Effect:
1. Reapers awaken every 50000 years to consume life
2. Player experiences a vision of the reapers from a beacon (which he inadvertently triggered to save Ashley)
3. Player builds a multi-species coalition to fight reapers

Guild Wars 2:
1. Dragons awaken every 10000 years to consume magic
2. Player experiences a vision of dragons from Omadd’s machine (which he inadvertently triggered to save Taimi)
3. Player builds a multi-species Pact to fight dragons

I think anyone that saw the new cutscene from the most recent episode (that also played Mass Effect) instantly got a flashback to Commander Shepard. At first I thought that the writing got marginally better (compared to season one), but come on… now they’re blatantly ripping off another game with a threadbare plot to begin with?

Will the toxic alliance remnants ever go?

in Living World

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

Why did the molten alliance disappear then? I don’t see molten invasions around anymore.

The toxic krait were a rebel faction among the krait who broke away from the main to follow Scarlet in hopes of enacting the birth of their prophet. That all ended rather poorly for them, but they can no longer rejoin the krait because they are perceived as being tainted (which I guess they technically are).
In the case of the dredge and flame legion they could still reintegrate back into the main forces, so when things fell apart they just went back home.

The Toxic alliance foes how ever? If they didn’t die in the crash of the tower, we would surely have been able to defeat the remnants by now. And with the tree and scarlet gone (and thus likely also the alliance), how would they even be able to keep appearing… and for what purpose ?

Well they do have a finite number after all, the krait were stuck but the nightmare court could return to their faction. Unless the toxic krait discovered a means to restock the troops. However the reason why they keep reappearing is probably because they have no where else to go. Probably sticking to the course.
Would be something interesting to explore in one of the LW patches.

I’m tired of running into the off shoot events in lower level zones

I completely disagree with the concept of removing content. However I do feel that them being group events and/or time limited is a bit annoying since you have to wait for other people and if no one shows up in time it just stays there.

Our characters feel like spectators, because they aren’t given a primary role with voice acting, and one of the reasons, is because they would have to get 10 voice actors again (1 male and 1 female for each race), for each episode. Unless they use the same actors for multiple races i think? Anyway, this is why we’re relegated to dialogue text most of the time.

We have several red posts in which we’re explicitly told it’s a technical issue, not a logistical or financial issue.

I wish people would stop saying that Ascalon was “originally Charr”. It wasn’t, it was “previously held by Charr”. Subtle but important difference. In any case, someone brought this up in the reddit comments. I’m wondering if this idea gained ground with the Charr and whether or not it is partially correct. We haven’t seen a champion for Mordremoth yet so I’m wondering if this action acts unexpectedly to draw one out.

Oh well, just idle thoughts running wild.

Ascalon was originally Charr. Grawl, or whatever lived in area, that will be called “Ascalon” later, are primitive as possible, inferior, ergo they didn’t have any primitive state, sort of. Charr are far superior to Grawl, and they had a territory that one can call a state, sort of. You don’t think of ant colonies when you chop forest for lumber or when you need to live above it. So thought the humans, but charr were no ant colony, ironically.

Kinda pointless argument, there’s plenty of real world examples of these sorts of things and people have been arguing over them for centuries.

Well GW2 has a persistent world but also attempts to tell a story. Well most MMOs suffer from this problem actually where you can go off rails and explore the world and see things out of order. Also for as much as I love the dynamic event system it isn’t the best way of delivering a story.
So the assault on Orr is a combination of the dynamic events and the personal story.

Why was Rox in the background? She abandoned the charr for the biconics, turning her back on Rytlock’s warband and choosing Braham over her mission. Of all the charr in Tyria, why would Rytlock work with her?

She didn’t abandon the Charr, she abandoned the opportunity to join Rytlock’s warband. She’s a gladium, still part of Charr society just right at the bottom even lower than scrapper warbands. Rytlock is still her superior officer.

She’s been supposed to be reporting back for a couple months now, but has been afraid of Rytlock’s reaction to her giving up the Scarlet kill, and thus has been hiding from him. I’d guess she’s going to at least face him this chapter.

Yeah, we see Rytlock chewing her out.

Ugh… totally wrong. Ascalon wasn’t charr territory to begin with. They conquered it from a primitive species of simian-like humanoids who lived in a greatly divided, tribal communities.

If you want the “true” heir to Ascalon, go fetch a grawl king.

According to Charr scholars humans are close relatives to grawl. Then again according to human scholars Charr are close relatives to grawl. Poor grawl no one wants anything to do with them.

I
ArenaNet, how can you once more trample onto GW1 lore in this way? How can you?

Bah humans were so full of them selves back then, it’s good that they get taken down a peg or two.

So wait, the wiki states about Sohothin:

“According to legend, if either this sword or its sister returns to the haunted remains of Ascalon City in the hands of the rightful king of Ascalon, the ghosts there will finally be laid to rest.”

So… why does Rytlock even need to be the Khan-Ur? Can’t he just hand the blade to the ghost of King Adelbern to lift the curse?

As previously discussed, maybe there is no human ‘rightful’ king…

No Adelbern was never the rightful king. The Charr had it before them but to be fair, the Charr did take Ascalon from The Forgotten

So who owns it, the people who stole it or the people who stole?

Easy to make that mistake, this season Rox has been relegated mostly to background character so far.

Yeah, she and Braham really have nothing meaningful to add. Taimi is the smart one who knows what’s going on, Majory is pretty much in charge (although I guess second in charge) and Kasmeer’s her girlfriend. Rox and Braham are pretty much just there to provide dps.

There have still been new skins added with each Living Story release in Season 2, they’ve just been added into the new open world content. You can get the Adventurer’s Scarf/Spectacles and materials to craft Ambrite weapons from the chests in Dry Top. The achievements actually help nudge you towards those by rewarding you with Lockpicks/Geodes to put towards getting the skins.

I imagine it won’t continue like this all the way through Season 2, mainly because the whole thing won’t be taking place in Dry Top. But while the focus is there, there’s nothing wrong with the rewards being like they are now, since there are still new skins to get.

I think ANet doesn’t want to hide skins behind a potential pay wall (for those that don’t login / join the game). Of course then again if we look at the gem store…

Continuity issues with personal story Maps

CureForLiving.5360

Solving this for our existing instances was not as simple as reserving a custom map for every instance, either, as that would entail a significant number of new maps to be generated, which would all need to be downloaded and stored in the DAT. There are hundreds of instances for the personal story, so even compressed that many custom instance maps would add dozens of GB to your DAT. So at the very least, we determined that we couldn’t accomplish this retroactively, but we are certainly still discussing all the implications of this limitation, and how it impacts your experience with our storytelling.

That sucks. Although instead of including all the instances how about only including the instances that are being affected at the time. A few hundred megs here and there overall might end up being large but as long as it’s not dumped on us all at once I think it might be fine. Who knows, not me since I have no idea of the technical challenges involved.

Technically speaking the prophecy did come to pass, as the prophecy was not about his return to Tyria, but just simply “his return” – and by bringing Nightfall about (his attempt to break free via merging Realm of Torment and Tyria) he fulfilled this. He is no longer forgotten, he became known to all, and he threatened the world. That was the prophecy. The prophecy was fulfilled, but Abaddon’s plan wasn’t. And technically, he did break free… right before dying.

“being dead” is not zhaitan’s corruption.

I laughed.

Although it would have made the battle for Orr a lot more anti-climatic.

Why actually Eternal Alchemy? It’s a philosophy/belief system of only one race.

It’s the closest thing to physics they have in Tyria. It’s like physics but for more magic so you get to do more cool things with it narratively speaking.

Zhaitan assaulted claw island, Vigil keep, Caledon forest, and many other places. The difference with. Mordremoth seems to be ley line and Pale tree related.

That’s a good point. So maybe the vision isn’t referring to attacks against us, but against Tyria itself. Maybe this means the other dragons will attack Tyria, it’s source of magic, or the Pale Tree as well in the near future, like Mordremoth is doing now.

Yes, but the lore so far indicates that the dragons don’t actually attack Tyria or seek to destroy Tyria, they suck up all the magic and to do that they corrupt, create vast armies and do a lot of damage. I’m guessing ANets going to retcon things and you’re probably be right, but still as it stands now we have no proof that the EDs care about anything other than getting a good meal before they go to sleep.

Is there any evidence of DSD awakening (i.e in-game source) ?

supposedly, it’s what gave us quaggans, largos, and an abundance of krait.

  • It seems silly to have a polar bear race in the same game as polar bear animals (and on the same map even).

Evolutionary speaking (for what that’s worth in a fantasy world) it would be more odd to find them not close together (assuming some common ancestor).

  • The Kodan mythology is fairly laughable. Talking to them is like having a conversation with the Sphinx from `Mystery Men` (if you don’t know this character, most of his dialogue is statements like `you must master your anger before it masters you`, `you must find your way before your way finds you`, etc.)

In the case of Claw an Shatterer there seems to be indications of only one being active at a time, but from what we’ve seen of Zhaitan there’s no real limit to how many champions can be running around.
Although I’m unsure of the exact definition of champion. In the case of Zhaitan it seemed that champions had a measure of autonomous action and some higher mental function, while the run of the mill minion was just dumb cannon fodder.

Cutscene:Huge Realization[Spoilers]

My theory is this.
The dragons where destructive forces of nature that balanced out each other. However with zhaitan dead, the magic of zhaitan is now bleeding out into the mists. and if not stopped it will destabilize all of existence.

I just came to the same conclusion myself rewatching the scene. It also fits with Nochtli’s story about the monster drinking all the water from a stream. We are the warrior who slew the monster (Zhaitan), and now the waters (magic) in its belly are spilling forth to flood the world.

Well the lore up until this point didn’t paint the EDs as being in balance, they would literally cause massive destruction and mass extinction while they’re awake and then fall asleep when they’ve gobbled up all the magic. In terms of balancing out magic… well we don’t know if having too much magic is a bad thing. We know that races tend to kill each other in mass when there’s a lot of magic to go around, but that doesn’t really have much to do with the magic.

Of course it all really depends on where ANet goes with the plot, our (player) knowledge of EDs, Magic and the Eternal Alchemy are all rather limited.

I think everyone else’s swearing may have drowned you out buddy. Where is Progeny Protective Services when you need them!?!

Where’s Zojja? She’s technically Taimi’s guardian and also would probably be interested in Scarlet’s findings.

But no I don’t think Taimi’s going to go evil since that would leave empty space in the cuteness department. Also I think we’re starting to stretch the going insane thing a bit. We already had Scarlet and what’s-he’s-name from the first episode. We don’t want this turning into WoW (or at least WoW up until Cataclysm, didn’t really keep up with the lore after that).

The Orbs - Zhaitan alive? [spoilers]

As others have said, Zhaitan may be dead, but the magical energy he embodied is not gone. More than likely, it was simply transferred to another of his minions, most likely Tequatl, who is now in the process of evolving into the next Elder Dragon of Undeath. (Held back a little by the heroes who fight him in Sparkfly Fen.)

My thinking as well. It’s like how every single time you kill the Claw of Jormag or the Shatterer a new champion rises and takes his place, so too if the ED dies one of his champions rises to take his place.

On a side note on the video I was wondering, if the spheres are the dragons, it should mean they are only six for the whole planet.

Maybe they’re the 6 main dragons and there’s a host of lesser dragons waiting around for their moment to shine.

Zhaitan BETTER be alive, at least, some form of him.

ANET owes us a real final battle. And I want it to be a solo instance where we get to personally strike him with our sword.

Zhaitan doesn’t have to be alive for them to expand on the final fight. Just call it a retcon or something, I’m sure no one’s going to complain if they make the fight even more awesome.

Confirmed – Logan’s seed has been planted

^ You are a true poet.

But teasing aside, there has been speculation that Jennah might be pregnant in other forums—though she certainly isn’t showing yet if she is. That said, she’s a powerful mesmer and she hasn’t made many appearances since Scarlet’s attack.

And how do we not know the child isn’t a few years old already. Hidden away after Logan left his old gang to save the queen. That is what my money is on.

But why hide the child?

My guess is, the Pale Tree was supposed to be one of Mordremoth’s minion breeding machines.

I don’t think so. The Pale Tree is being elevated to a level of global mechanism. If the Pale Tree was only a champion then she wouldn’t feature so prominently (or at least she and the dragons are being hinted to as being some crucial component of the workings of Tyria).

I’d tossed around that theory as well Manasa. To me, it’s not any more of less plausible, although I’ve had my butt chewed several times for suggestiong that the Pale Tree could be a jungle dragon minion / champ. It could go either way based on the limited information we have at this time.

Possible, sure. Although she’d have to be one very special champion. The diagram didn’t show Tequatl, Claw or Shatterer.

And now they milking it, making them the center of everything, the chosen – Terhehehehe, the rebel – Canach, the super villain – Scarlet and now the …. – (Pale Tree). Whatever …. will turn out to be :p

Yeah, I don’t want to say it, but I’m getting the same feeling here :P

Sylvari are getting a whole lot of loving. Although hopefully Anet will give us some Norn come Jormag, some Charr come Kralkatorik, some Asura come Primodus, and humans… well they already had GW1, maybe give them bubbles?

As for the Eternal Alchemy/Tree connection, I admittedly can’t say anything conclusive about that. I find it rather hard to believe that a tree that sprouted only 25 years ago (granted, it was around longer than that, but only much later did it finally bear fruit) is suddenly somehow a key to the understanding of Tyria’s inner workings.

This is were it gets a little tricky. I don’t have a problem with the current LW bending heavily towards Sylvari, but I do hope ANet doesn’t turn the Pale Tree into some… dare I say it… Mary Sue. Well as long as the Pale Tree doesn’t become some god like thing, the ultimate answer to all etc. etc.

If I have one complaint it’s that the PC doesn’t really seem to be involved with the narrative anymore outside of text bubbles, but the game has seen leaps and bounds since launch, and I’m willing to bet the lack of PC acting it due to time constraints (since the PC is technically ten separate characters).

We’re currently exploring ways to make the PC speak again. It’s more of a technical consideration and not really about actor availability or voice budget. We’ll share more on this when we’re ready.

Would be nice once the technicalities have been sorted out if you could retrospectively add some PC voices to the available stories ;D (yeah I know it wouldn’t fit in too to add a lot but well a comment here and there would be nice).

You mean just like how Season 1 ended, with the bad guy very clearly “winning”?

Yeah, the best we could do was limit the body count. However since Scarlet died and few players actually care about things like overarching narrative they probably thought it was a victory for us.

Contrast this to Guild Wars 2’s living story. Where most of the dialog seems to be built around amusement rather than story building.

Amusement can also be story. Your talking about narrative and to a certain extent I do agree with you.
Although very often in video games you have dialogue which consist purely to move along the plot. The characters become little more that plot devices meant to spew expository dialogue and as such are rather shallow. And I think ANet is trying to not do this.

Well here’s a amusing example: http://youtu.be/016dZuob2Dc?t=1m44s from about 1:44 to about 2:30

Dry Top chests and keys

It’s an interesting idea, OP, although it would practically lead to us having to grind zones for keys, unless there’s nothing unique about the zone chest in which case the system is just making things unnecessarily difficult with no added reward.

yeah i dont specific area chests in gw1 they tried that then had to introduce lockpicks cause you had to have so many different keys if you wanted to open chests. i hate the dry top chests too i got soo many keys now but only found two chests so far the sandstorm ends then i have to wait so long again to look again

I have the opposite problem myself, no keys and I keep falling over chests.

Give him a new look, make him look bad kitten with new armor or something. They usually do this in movies and tv shows when the characters gone for a while return looking different. Maybe this will make people like him more… What do you guys think?

I think "looking bad kitten is a LONG way down the list on things by which I judge a character.

Sure it’s shallow, but rather appealing for the angst-y-teen-demographic.

Those defending TreeHorn – you DO realize SOME of us are continuing snark at him because it bugs y’all, right?

All aboard the Trahearne hate-wagon we got complementary snacks!

I really hate those people who say Trehearne claimed Zhaitan’s death when he did exactly the opposite. Wake up people!

Trahearne did the opposite of killing Zhaitan?…

He gave birth to Zhaitan?! :O

No, when we confetti-ed him off the tower Trahearne ran after him and gave him some CPR. Zhaitan shall rise again!

If you have done it all I advice you to stop playing the game for a few months and then play again. (Note: Log in once every two week just to unlcok LS chapters).

Best bet. GW2 will still be here. Go out find something else to keep yourself busy with and when that starts getting stale give GW2 another shot.

One of The items in Scarlett’s room has history from Ogden Stonehammer, that suggests the human “gods” interacted or fought with the dragons, but that doesn’t match up with when humans think they arrived. Maybe the human history is wrong? The elder dragons are supposed to pre-date the arrival of humans by thousands of years…

Specifically it states that accounts of the EDs go back a long time possibly even to the human gods. So more accurately, the human gods might have known about their existence.
