I so very much loved GW1 and was So very much Utterly disappointing with GW2
I’ve very much noticed this to be a common trend.
1- When i left more than a year ago, this game should have been called kite wars, is this still the case?
2- The game had a god awful stacking system for buffs and debuffs
Where we can’t stack we kite.
3- Lack of proper trinity (healers in particular) made spvp dreadful and next to nobody played it, ironic in a pvp oriented game, are healers still missing?
Well they haven’t introduced the holy trinity, so I guess yes.
Thats too bad, i hoped that with the dyeing population they have they would have realized by this point, that this sucks.
Today i entered lions arch and rata and they are basically dead…
Well I’m not sure if you’re assessment of the population is correct… when did you last check? If any time in the last few days I can assure you most people are playing the new content. Maybe it’s because of the redesign of LA, they separated things a bit, so you no longer have so many people crowding in the same area. Probably still see a lot of people around the mystic forge.
- Influencing the world – This is where the difference between the games are. One is a sandbox (or a sandpark, depending on who you talk to) and the other is a themepark. Now, I fully support more sand in the game. However, to the extent you’re looking for I doubt it, as it would most likely require a great deal of work on the engine to support the function. Instead, this should be done through DE’s.
Can never go wrong with a bit of sandpark.
So basically releasing more content, and as such taking longer between updates which basically gives the same result, other than if they spread it out you have new stuff for 3-5 hours every two weeks instead of new stuff for 10 hours every second month?
Or they could reduce the quality, with less QA-time and polish-time, they’d be able to turn out more content. Of course I do imagine most people wouldn’t however prefer low quality content.
1. I agree with what you are saying – stopping the living world and focusing on an expansion pack should solve this, even if i’d have to pay for it.
Well that’s always been the suspicions among players. However the only difference I can see it in the time content gets delivered (all at once) and the amount of content (all at once). Although S1 didn’t live up to the expansion-worth of content there’s no reason ANet couldn’t deliver an expansions worth of content over the period it would take to produce an boxed expansion. Although I do have to acknowledge that we don’t really life in a world of delayed gratification, so I can understand most peoples desire to get a lot of content at once so they can grind through it.
the reason i chose to mention another game is the fact the a lot of different people came to me from various places and said that they are considering leaving for this game.
There’s no real need to defend why you referred to anther game, in general video games have a horrible taxonomy and vocabulary. In most cases game play mechanics and features in one game are referenced/discussed in how they relate to another more well known game because we simply don’t have an effective alternate means of doing so. However your original post did lack any real discussion of these mechanics or features (basically you said, hey look at Archeage it age a lot of the features I would like to see), so it’s also understandable as to how others would perceive you as not referring to any particular mechanic of feature within Archeage but to the whole game itself.
Trion is an amazing company. I’m no fan boy, but the amount of work they put into Rift was astonishing,
I did hear (not experience) that Trion was very good at delivering rapid large content patches. Just too bad it was a raid-end-game MMO, it feels slightly wasteful to spend so much time on content that will be outdated come next patch.
Back on-topic, GW2 development feels painfully slow.
True enough. It hardly feel like they’re a 300 man strong company (even considering not all 300 are developers or men). Although I think a lot of the work that does go into GW2 is behind the scenes (coding and optimizations etc) that we don’t experience because they’re not directly related to mechanics of features. However I’m hoping that with S2 (haven’t learned many lessons from S1) that they’ve managed to setup a decent content pipeline and that they’ll be able to start turning out more substantial content. Else I guess at worse I’ll just relog when new content becomes available (i.e. thanks Buy 2 Play model).
The big difference between a normal MMO expansion and the LS is that a normal MMO expansion continues to exist in the world. It becomes part of the overall MMO world where the LS content mostly is just gone as the story progresses. Don’t get me wrong – I am not one of the people who go through content so fast that I’m waiting around between LS updates. But I recognize that there are people like that.
From my perspective Living World S1 was about expanding the world Vertically (that is building onto what was already there, i.e. revamp of Kessex’s Hill, LA adding a JP here revamping a dungeon path here etc.), but S2 seems to be following the Horizontal scaling, not expanding on what already is but adding new things to the game (more in line with the classic expansion model). Although we’ve only had 1 patch so far of S2 but it kinda seems we’ll be getting more classic expansion content this time around (but this will also mean that the current content will go stale since they won’t be touched for some time).
Ancient documents, found now in the Durmand Priory’s collection, reveal accounts passed down by other races such as the powerful Seers and even the human gods themselves.
So the human gods apparently knew about the EDs. The suspicion was always that since they appeared in the period between ED hibernation and awakening that they didn’t know that they built their capital on top of the Elder Undead Dragon Zhaitan.
My sylvari assistant will try it next. I am hopeful that she, with her innate connection to the sylvari Dream, will be a better subject than those who’ve gone before.
So we might have an army of half-crazed-scarlets running around. Although maybe they’re just in some Asuran mental asylum.
I think this may be suitable evidence to argue that the entity is not Mordremoth after all.
That and he was asleep during that time, and so far we have little evidence of EDs being able exert much influence over the world while in hibernation (the Asura were tapping one and the Charr practically lived next to one). Mordy could be the exception since EDs do have a number of differences among them.
I don’t understand though : if she was already Scarlet when she moved to prosperity, why bring her old journal with her ? Especially when she’s been using her new journal that much.
(Maybe there’s no explanation, it’s just something that I find weird).
Sentimentality? Also having visited her secret lab previously and now her old room I’m pretty sure Scarlet is a bit of a hoarder.
The speculation that the lay lines and the river of souls could be connected was quite interesting as well. I have wondered if perhaps Abaddon had been corrupted himself, as I think in the overall order of things the Dragons could do this. Maybe this is why the god’s left?
As for Abaddon’s corruption, from my understanding it was mostly because of a different opinion regarding how magic was to be handled between him and the other gods that caused him to be locked up. Not sure if you’d consider him all that evil or corrupted at that point, he only started leaning toward bad in order to set himself free.
I agree with the point that was made that the Dragons are a natural part of Tyria. It makes me wonder how they balance each other? How did the world survive in the past when they awoke? It appears they do not awake “together.”
Well to use a simple analog, the ED are like the Reapers from Mass Effect (actually very much like the Reapers from Mass Effect…). However simply because they serve a function doesn’t necessarily mean they are a natural phenomenon, some external entity or force might had decided that the best thing to do regarding all that magic in Tyria was to create / set loose the EDs.
As for how the world survives… well apparently it doesn’t. The EDs seem to wake up every 10,000 years (or so) and they’ve been at this for at least 2-3 cycles (according to the latest Living World update). They don’t all wake up at the same time, but they do seem to naturally wake up at some point during the cycle. They go about and consume all the magic in Tyria and in doing so practically wipe out everything in their way (not sure if this is intended or only a side effect). The only reason that some of the races (seer, forgotten, dwarves, jotun, and mursaat) survived the last cycle was because of a bit of trickery (like the Mursaat who found a way to hide) and magic (like the creation of the Bloodstones by the Seer). Basically the Bloodstones sealed away all the magic that hadn’t been corrupted, and since there was no magic left to consume the EDs went to sleep.

Hmm, also why weren’t the sylvari based off of Ventari for that matter? (Other than ANet’s decision, because they wanted centaurs as a playable race, but scrapped the idea.) Did he die after the tree had decided it wanted to make some human looking plants along with some dog looking plants?
Well the tree was already busy growing when he died, so probably. One can consider that Ventari and Ronan contributed different, Ventari to their teaching and their ideologies and Ronan to their shape / form. Although I have no doubt the Pale Tree could start producing sylvari of a different shape if she wanted to.
Although I’m still of the opinion that human form was the better (and more pragmatic) decision.
What if sylvari die when touched by corruption because the Pale Tree is deliberately extinguishing them before it takes hold? That could explain why the soundless can survive the process.
Could be. Although we have little idea of how much control the Pale Tree has over Sylvari, surely if she could flip their switch there wouldn’t be too many Nightmare Court running around. Also why would she keep this a secret? Surely no one would hold it against her, killing someone who is corrupted is pretty much considered a mercy.
I’d also like to echo the sentiments that their relationship is written in a way that is painful. Look I’ve played a lot of games with relationships in them, and this one is getting about as awkward as Fox and Krystal in Starfox Assault.
My only issue is that the relationship doesn’t match my conception of my various character. I can see some of my alts as being all chummy chummy, but others not so much. The only issue is that we’re not able to meaningfully interact so we’re unable to change the narrative or reaction to us or about us. But I’m aware of the constraints as as such I don’t mind too much.
And remove the feeling that the zones are made of living characters that have their own lives and that not everything revolve around one character only ? I wouldn’t want that, like at all. The bolded part is for me one of the greatest point of GW2.
Agreed, ambient dialog really helps to give the world depth and feeling. Particularly in the racial regions of Tyria. Most of it tends to be a bit stereotypical to the race, but in that way it helps to create a sense of the race. The Charr more aggressive militaristic Charr creates a far different feeling to the noble in Divinity’s Reach complain about Centaurs, or poor people.
Honestly I think ANet should constantly be adding more of this (if only because I’ve been player the game for a while now and I’ve heard most if it :P)
5) Our current UI setup for non-spoken dialogue limits the number of words we can use for the PC’s lines. Adjusting the UI is no small feat. We writers must abide by this limitation, but I believe we’re getting better at using the words we have to their best effect.
I can see this. The current UI isn’t that great for long pieces of text (try reading a book in game it feels a bit awkward), but it most likely wasn’t made to. However the easiest means of giving our PCs some more personality would be through the non-spoken dialog (since it’s easier to write a lot of dialog then have to write and VO it). A change in the UI would greatly go towards allowing for longer, more meaningful non-spoken conversations. Although this might also include some difficult to debug dialogue-trees, since you’d be able to put flags for gender, race, profession, personality… possibly even Personal Story choices. But I think having more ‘tailored’ dialog would probably address some of the issues some players are experiencing.
If we split our attention to two storylines, then neither one gets our full attention.
Basically this, we’re in Maguuma, Pack is not. Would be nice it the Pack dropped us a letter or two every now and then. At least a informal status update from Trahearne: “Hi commander, how’s it going? Me, well we’re gotten done X, Y, Z. Looking into A, B, C. When we’re ready for the next offensive we’ll send you for”, or something like that.
Zhaitan was killed. Confirmed.
;)
Aaawww there goes my hope of a Zhaitan Resurrection / Arah Story Expansion / New Final Zhaitan Battle.
And in spite of “paying attention” you flogged that horrific LS Scarlet saga to the very end and beyond.
Firstly, what were they going to do? Have her slip in the shower and break her neck half-way through S1? Sometimes you just got to stick with it to the end. Also I’m still convinced people are retrospectively making S1 worse than it was.
Most of what you say makes sense, but this is the bit I take issue with. Not because you are wrong, but because this needs to be developed separately alongside the main story. The world doesn’t stop just because we are in Maguuma, but if you look around….it has. The zones and their stories have not aged or changed in 2 years. That makes it harder for us to do what you suggest.
What is going on in Ascalon? How goes the fight against the Fire Legions and the rebels of EBonhawke? It doesn’t need to be a story, but we need new events, changing events. Something new and different to show this evoloving Living World which is meant to be core to the pillars of the game, yet still hasn’t fully been realised (yet)
I agree a lot of plot lines are still stuck in limbo, but I must point out that ANet can only produce so much content at a time.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. I’d prefer a story, an overall engaging experience. Someone else would want more legendary so he can collect them in order to get a sense of achievement. Someone else might want their class of choice to be more balanced. I can imagine what the dedicated WvWers would want.
Although new features (going off OPs examples) are somewhat not going to work out very well without other supporting game types (new events or dungeons for new skins etc.).
What you all smart eyed people apparently fail to realize is that he has not said jumping should be removed, no one likes jumping or whatever, he said he doesn’t like it, and both last events implied it, thus he is requiring a choice: if you like jumping, jump. If you don’t, be allowed to kill even 300 mobs to reach the top by secondary way. Is that so hard to accept?
Some are clumsy at this jumping trash and spending 2 hours to try reach a stupid goggle on top of that wreck is nothing more than a frustration, just like it can be to hunt useless coins or it was to hunt useless crystals.
Yes he did say that he didn’t like it, but he also went on to then make an entire argument which came down to “make it the way I want or I will leave”, which is kinda where most people seem to be having some issues.
Beyond that, we have the continued comments from Colin about ‘big background projects’ that they [still] aren’t ready to talk about.
I hate it when they mention these big projects. Either they haven’t delivered on any yet or they’re perspective on what constitutes big (that of a developer) is a bit different then mine (that of a player). Which might be the case since I’ve got no idea how much effort goes into making content (I do know how much effort goes into player it but that’s not really the same).
Maybe a reaction on EQNext that is expected somewhere in 2015.
Personally the only MMO i waited for the last years is EQNext, and i think
i’m not alone there.
Well it’s looking like a f2p so I’ll definitely give it a go.
Unless it’s intended, few people geting good loot and bringing it into economy while others have to buy gems and convert them to gold to be able to afford anything.
This.
I don’t believe in a broken RNG; since they hired an economist, I’d rather believe that it is working as intended.
So basically ANet is evil? Oh ok.
well my guildies and i asked for a pet pony therefore arena net must deliver
Your comment is useful as a "miner helmet powered by solar energy ".
Thanks for your trolling
It’s actually just hyperbole not trolling (might be a straw man though), by taking the original argument to an absurd level the hope is to show short comings or issues with the original argument. Basically what he’s saying is that just because you want stuff doesn’t mean ANet has spend their time making the stuff you want.
I guess it is easier to write that way and streamlining it makes more sense, but i feel like i get a lot less choice in my character movements and motivations.
I understand that they want to get us in a position where we “lead” however they have to give us options.
Personally I’m fine with the way it is and branching plot lines do require additional work which I’d rather see them put into making the main story shine.
I personally do not want to be their leader. I want to be on the same level as them, as a band of adventurers (if i have to be, its not like i have a choice)… what are your thoughts?
Do you like being their “boss”?
I think it’s a question of role playing. I can see my Blood Legion Charr Necro wanting to be in charge, but not so much my Human Guardian who would probably be happy to be an equal. Putting us in charge is probably the safer route since if you recall some of the feedback regarding the Personal Story the lack of authority was a problem to some and some players had problems with S1 where we weren’t heroic enough or something.
Well the resemblance is noteworthy but…
So for someone who never ventured that far in GW1, what could this mean for us?
I’ve got the same problem myself when it comes to GW1 lore (the wiki isn’t always the best source). So I’d be interested in hearing the opinions of those more knowledgeably.
you meen this painting? It looks more like the Realm of Torment
It really does, but I see no way they could connect the two.
I think there’s been a general assumption that the Jungle Dragon is somehow responsible for nightmare, but maybe it isn’t. There doesn’t seem to be any connection between Torment and Nightmare but perhaps this is the first clue to suggest there is.
Assumptions built on top of assumptions. Alas with the nature of GW lore we’re less often given detailed explanation so much as hints and parts. I still think ANet needs to include a bestiary / codex or something similar in game, so we have a solid clear source from which to reference. Although the conversations might become less interesting in this here forum.
From my understanding most of these assumptions are built on the Sylvari == Mordy minions and similar theories. With the latest lore there does seem to be some tentative link between Sylvari and Mordy, but the nature of the link is still unknown (although it might have something to do with ley lines).
I enjoyed the ending, although a bit of foreboding could have been nice.
To protect his profit margin. Mind you he was in the first group of refugees to flee. Kiel fought on the breachmaker. Hobo-Tron has done more for the people of LA than Evon Gnashblade.
You say flee I say selflessly aiding in the evacuation, scouting the area ahead to ensure no danger would befall the civilians!
The biggest problem was that it ended just as I was getting really engaged!
Probably do it with a alt or two.
Still good job ANet, can’t wait for the whole thing to be released to I can experience it in it’s entirety.
I am increasingly concerned about the core of the story being told through exposition dumps, particularly when they come from Taimi. The world should tell the story, not the characters. We keep being told about ley lines or little plot details about Scarlet, but we aren’t seeing these things, the biconics (and other characters) are being used as crutches to tell the story.
Personally I felt like most of the biconic banter was very self indulgent and took away from the moment or needlessly prolonged my advancement. Listening to Kasmeer and Marjory talk about each other, or Taimi Braham and Rox interact with each other (and their views on the world) began to grow very tedious by the end of the instances. I was trying to focus on the Zephyrites, the people that died, but I’m having to listen to Marjory and Kasmeer instead. They weren’t adding anything to story, they were just slowing it down or distracting. They seem to constantly undermine the serious tone of the story.
I will agree that there was exposition, but it was that overt. Since S1 is no longer available these expositions are necessary to get new player up to speed. So maybe I’m giving it a bit more leeway under the assumption that we’ll be seeing less of it in the future.
I feel a bit differently about the banter. My favourite piece of dialog is where Tiami walk behind Rox and get’kitten (or almost hit) by her tail. For me the Banter helps to flesh out the characters, provide them some depth. In S1 I felt that there wasn’t enough character building, most of the dialog was purely in service to the overall narrative and at times the biconics felt a bit shallow.
I will admit the inability for me to be able to skip past the dialog at times was sorely missed (especially when my connection dropped out and I had to replay an instance and listen to the same dialog not 5 minutes later) but overall I liked it.
Maybe however ANet can look into a way of allowing player to skip it in some way. Although based on current game mechanics I’m not sure how or even if it could… the conversation system from the personal story for example allowed you to skip over some of the dialog but it’s no longer being used. ANet could put more of the dialog into the 3D Animated cutscenes and allows us to skip over some of the dialog that way but I’m not sure if the game can do that.
- Having the NPC’s do interesting player-like things (mesmer blink & portal, yay!) instead of being a dialogue-reader and random useless body. It takes away some of the sting of them being the ‘heroes’ of the story while we do all the work.
True, having them do stuff other than provide dialog and some dps in encounters was a nice touch.
but was saddened he died so quickly in terms of story.
I wished however he died a little bit faster in the fight. Having to run around for 15-20 minutes to kill him was a little over the top for me, especially since i get always backache in such long fights due to problems with my spine
A bit more difficulty, and a bit less time would have been ideal (especially since it’s now permanent I don’t mind having my behind handed to me). The checkpoint mechanic could also be looked at since you’re basically able to die and retry with little penalty (although that’s all mechanics, this thread seems to be about story).
Considering how last season ended I’m going to say that there’s no way this is the only new area. Also notice that they’re selling the LS for gems, so how can they do that if it’s just a tiny bit of content? It’s definitely going to have big stuff in it.
What you get for the gems is the Story instances and then the Achievements. The area is available whether you pay or not.
So the size of the new zone makes sense
What’s been added in this update isn’t a new zone. It’s a small area called Prospect Valley, which is part of the yet-to-be-fully-revealed zone Dry Top. It’s similar to the difference between the Thaumanova area and Metrica Province: it’s only a small chunk of the whole map.
Just clarifying for people who are confused. Nearly all zones (disregarding capital cities) in GW2 have been rectangles – fairly large ones, at that – and I’m expecting Dry Top to be the same in due time.
This is my thought as well. it’s an interesting area, but still feels a bit cramped. A lot of stuff going on in one area and ANet is trying to utilise as much of it as possible. Open areas with little to nothing in them aren’t all that bad if only since they add to a sense of scale.
You people rush your content too much. It’s like complaining that you beat a Sonic game in one day.
It took 3 hours to get 95% of the AP that is not rushing content at all. This was the most pathetic Living Story and for it being the start of Season 2 its hilarious. GG wait 2 weeks relog.
I think you’re in the minority with that opinion.
Don’t get me wrong the zone is awesome and I love it but the little amount of stuff you can truly do there that you can’t do elsewhere for either more money or more enjoyment is quite sad. And 3 hours for content that is supposed to last 2 weeks especially it being the first of Season 2 is down right pathetic like I said. I am not in the minority go look at reddit or other forums people are raging at the lack of content.
Seems someone doesn’t remember the start of Season 1. Well probably start gaining momentum as the Season progresses.
Except that having content so hyped and having it last for less then a day when no patch or update for two weeks.
Yes after all that hyping… no wait ANet literally released 1 teaser and 1 trailer.
During the CDI for LW we had nice proposals to unfold/unlock a map step by step.
Good to know we’re being listened to.
It looks like the “Regions” achievement category has the potential to expand with every new LS update, if a new map (region) is added with every update. I love this style of achievements, as they encourage me to explore everything in a map, and complete achievements! However, what I think would be absolutely phenomenal, is if – eventually – all maps would be aded to this tab. It would make me return to this game for at least another year, on its own. Getting achievements for finding all the little nooks and crannies, defeating the important foes in each area…. Man, that would be awesome.
From the emptyness of the tab, it looks a little ANet was already planning something like that, but I would like to know more about their exact plans with this. What do you think?
I like the idea of eventually adding to all maps/regions, but the problem of course is that ANet rarely adds new content to existing areas unless it’s part of the living world update, and it seems that we might be exploring new areas instead of revisiting old areas ala Season 1 (of course with only 1 release so far Season 2 could go either way).
A future heart perhaps?
I must say the new area is pretty small, maybe ANet is planning on expanding it (in terms of size) and later on adding proper hearts and stuff.
I am wondering now if Mordremoth can easily psychologically influence the Soundless? That would make for a dangerous situation for the whole of the Sylvari race if that is true. However it does make me ponder why does Mordremoth simply target the Nightmare Court instead?
We don’t have enough information yet. So far it seems that those Sylvari not connected to the dream are susceptible, but we’ve for limited evidence either way.
The Nightmare Court are still connected however to the Dream. Or more accurately they’re connected to the Nightmare. So any protection (if there is any at all) that the Dream provides is also available to the Nightmare Court.
means Mordremoth activity? I mean Canach did bad thing without (apparently) being influenced by a dragon…
But in his mind he was doing the right thing. When you later talk to him in jail he retrospectively sees his mistakes and feel remorse. So not exactly the same as the Crazy Sylvari Duo (that is Scarlet and Aerin).
I think that Nightmare is described as being part of the Dream so if the Dream is the protection one could also guess the Nightmare is.
Neither the Dream nor the Nightmare is ever really discussed in detail. Either Nightmare is a part of the Dream (like the Force has a light and a dark side), or it exists within the Dream (and thus can be accessed via the Dream). Either way the argument can be made that the Nightmare Court has some connected to either the Dream itself (but in anther form) or to something within the Dream via the Dream.
Have we been told in game whether all Sylvari are immune to dragon corruption, including the nightmare court, including the soundless?
The wording was “those born of the Pale Tree” die when touched by corruption, rather than becoming corrupted.
Although all the corruption Sylvari have so far been exposed to had a notable physical component. The current theory seems to be that Mordy is circumventing this defense mechanism by only corrupting the minds of Sylvari, but…. it’s only a theory. We have no idea how Mordy corrupts or doesn’t corrupt.
There is also a nice slip up with steam creatures themselves. In season 1 it was stated, that Scarlet reverse engineered the steam machines, while in season 2 the story tells us she has created them.
Bit of a contradiction, I’d say.
They never said that, they implied something to those lines however. Not a contradiction simply the product of unreliable sources. They through one thing when they had a little evidence now with more evidence they think something else.
But how does that steam creatures fit in?
If we take the asuran future prediction alternatative universe stuff into account, then that would mean that Scarlet created the steam creatures for our alter ego from the future to conquer their world?
It’s not technically the future. Think of it as a fractal of a possible future (fractals are based off of future or past events but aren’t, they’re like echoes or shadows or something along those lines). So common time travel rules don’t apply since as we’ve seen fractals aren’t always 100% accurate.
I know cutszenes are hard to make, but if there is such a expositional reveal, some focus shots would greatly help the whole atmosphere in the szene.
Agreed, I think they could do a bit more with the cutscenes, especially in situations where all we do is stand and listen to people talk (might as well have a cutscene). Although technically cutscenes take control away from players, so the common rule of thumbs seems to be to keep them as short as possible. I’m not sure which way is better though.
- Overgrown enemies. Well now that is interesting. Appearently the awakening of Mordremoth causes these once calm creatures to overgrow and subsequently go out of control. Is it a chance to see overgrown Sylvari at one point? (btw. was a bit disapointed by the avatar of melandru. I really hoped for a Hulk-Sylvari form as a Elite, since they are plants and can grow… maybe we will sie it now)
Or Overgrown is similar to Risen or Branded, simply the collective name of Mordy’s minions.
- Dragon are magic sponges and do not consume magic. That was something we allready knew. More so to the point that we are able to use their magic when they are dormant.
However, this also allows for another theory, meaning that there is a way to use magic wrong and make it go away, consuming it till nothing is left.
What I took away from this is: why aren’t we using Zhaitan’s corpse as a giant magic battery.
- We need better explanation about the “soundless” and why is it handled as something like common knowledge? Wasn`t it a big deal in the Sylvari LS, or did i misunderstood it?
In the Sylvari starting area you can meet the Soundless, talk to them, hear about their believes etc. Essentially this is one of the tricky parts about exposition, you want to carry across sufficient knowledge so that players aren’t left out but you don’t want it to feel like a lecture.
Actually I’m wondering if they couldn’t just get a couple of other voice actors, aiming of course to get someone who kinda like the original voice actor. I wouldn’t mind and they’d be able to at least show us what Destiny’s Edge is up to.
Also I found it interesting that the dragons might once again be connected to something bigger.
Seems as if we might be getting some answers. Taimi is currently sitting in Scarlet’s old room probably making the connection (seems Scarlet knew about the connection between the EDs, Ley-lines and possibly even the Mother Tree).
Currently my bet is: EDs are a natural phenomenon and import to the regulation of magic in the world
Or: That the EDs are the servants of an even greater evil (although so far nothing exists to support this option).
The dragons do not consume magic. They absorb it like a sponge. Dragons do not break down the magic to use it for energy. They simply absorb it, store it and let it leak back out over the years.
Basically this, although it’s implied that they leak it out while they’re asleep. The cycle is simple, elder dragons wake up very hungry, eat all the magic they can find, go to sleep and then the magic leaks out of them until they wake up and the cycle continues. It seems that ANet is planning to explore this in more detail in S2 (yay!) primarily the why but the how is already fairly known.
And I disagree with the Elder Dragons not using magic for energy – given that the champions feed the Elder Dragons magic so that they can rise, and they fall to sleep when there isn’t enough magic, it seems to me that they utilize magic for energy and power.
The personal story pretty much states this, it’s the reason why the Pack killed the Mouth of Zhaitan after all, in order to cut off his supply of magic and in effect weaken him.
I cannot believe that Master of zephirytes, aspects, would not handle some engineer sylvari alone. Sure, supported by dragon corruption, but it wasn’t his point I think.
I never really got a the vibe that the zepherites hone their mastery of the aspects for combat or offensive. Being a master of the aspects probably doesn’t mean he’s good at fighting, particularly given their general non-combative nature.
Also, it’s really mainly in LA any distrust of Sylvari exists.
They were hardest hit, so it wouldn’t surprise me. Of course some additional mistrust else where would also seem most likely.
The Master of Peace has a secret, that much is certain.
His parting words were: Bye bye, I’m going somewhere else and I’m not telling you where, why or how (or something to that effect). So yeah he’s up to something. Question is, is it something good or something bad?

Change your DNS to 8.8.8.8 and alternative DNS to 8.8.4.4. It sometimes helps.
Didn’t really notice any of those, but yeah definitely something to put on the to do list for next time.
The devs have said that it’s a matter of when, not if. But yeah, don’t expect it anytime soon. Maybe in a year or so.
More accurately, they want to and maybe in the future but they’ve got no one presently (or as of a few weeks ago) working on it
you lied, that was a lot of words
There was actually a lot of story going on. The quality however is usually up for debate.
For the rewards
Seriously, pretty soon this game will have more weapons/armor originating from the gem store than from the actual game.
Oh well, the woes of a F2P game I suppose.
Are people OK with this? I’d actually almost prefer at this rate to not have new stuff added if it’s only gem store based.
What happened to doing a cool quest line or killing a difficult boss to get a weapon skin in games?
You get that from the good ole sub-based games. Anet has to keep paying the rent, so the Gem Store is what we get.
Agreed, but it would be nice if they threw every 4 new set in game wink wink ANet
The best I could fine was: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Iron_Greatsword, and in which case it’s craftable, but it looks nothing like a katana…
OP: Do you have a picture of it?
I hope you understand having 63 stacks of anything is not normal.
Although I do applaud the effort, I take it he must have mined the bazaar with all his alts, every day. Or just spent a lot of money on the TP.
yeah they never did have a what to expect in 2014 blog like they said they were going to do after ls1 ended I think essentially arenanet hates being held to deadlines with a passion. Thats why they dont like to say anything.
And because of threads like these. Just think OP wouldn’t have had anything to complain about if ANet had been this quiet from the start.
There were never ANY promises on WHEN crafted precursors would be released. Granted, they indicated they were aiming for 2013 and they are obviously behind schedule on this, so an inquiry is justified.
However, anything they say on the subject (short of an announcement it’s going to be in the next release), is just fuel for the continual “Anet lied to us!!!!” fire, so I can’t really blame them for saying nothing until it’s ready for release.
My theory as to why we hardly ever hear anything anymore.
Well,… GW2 is a big boy and handles itself now… NCSoft puts all his attention on his newborn WildStar. I won’t expect much improvement in this game from now on.
Actually, if NCSoft loosens its “grip” on GW2 a bit, that could be a very GOOD thing in terms of development direction and pressure to be the cash cow of the company.
This is still just a theory as far as I know. It’s player speculation which in the absence of official comment has become the community’s common truth: NCSoft is squeezing the life out of ANet. I’m not sure if it’s true or not, I just know no one has proof.
I think posts like these are the reason they didn’t put a roadmap up like last time, people take the list as if it’s set in stone the moment they read about it. They have already implemented alot of requested features etc, it’s just a matter of time. They aren’t as big as Blizzard or something so they have to push certain things further down the list.
Not being as big of a company is no reason to not have a roadmap.
It just means you don’t put as much stuff on it. Leaving customers in the dark is bad business.
Oh I’m sure they have a roadmap, just not sharing it. See this thread and so many other’s for a possible reason as to why not.
There’s two ways to deal with this: say as much as you can, or say as little as you can. Having seen a company try the first approach, and seeing ANet doing the second, I’ve got to say I like the “as much as you can” way better. I doubt ANet will change, though.
/shrug
They were vocal for a while, but that didn’t work out it seems. Unfortunately I can’t speak for ANet and as such I don’t know if the current approach is very effective or not (from ANet’s perspective). I do know from a player perspective I’d prefer they say a lot more.
i thing you publicly announce is expected to occur. And not announcing anything is not the proper answer to the equation, the proper answer is to deliver.
And so we go full circle. They don’t announce things because people expect them to occur even if announced simply as a possible implementation or something they might look at in the future. If they don’t announce they can deliver without people complaining.
It’s been a year since all those promises and… nothing really looks promising anymore.
If anything one of the continuing themes in this thread was that there wasn’t any promises.
Bah my connection to the patch servers or whatever they have always sucks, not sure if it’s my ISP or the number of people hammering the servers. So my downloading is probably going to take a while, should be slightly less crowded :P
Slightly ahead of schedule, or at least my imagined schedule
Quaggan is favorite, quaggan is cuuutteee OooOoohh.
The game is fun, most complaints I’ve heard are more related to the long term appeal. But with Season 2 starting you’ll have enough content to keep yourself busy. At the very least you’ll get your money’s worth from it.
But they don’t run the game on Pacific time. They run the time on GMT. That time zone is 4 hours ahead of the East Coast. It is currently after noon on the east coast. So it’s 4 pm GMT and still no sign of a download at all even though it’s July first for a chunk of the world. There’s part of the world (like Austrailia) where it’s already July 2nd and still no patch download.
Sure, the game runs on GMT…. but their office hours don’t.
It’s only 9:25am 7-1-14 for them now.
This^
Historically, I remember the earliest being ~11 PDT and the latest being like ~3 PDT – that’s not fact-based, but my memory only.
They seem to usually aim for 12:00 Seattle O’Clock (Pacific Time/ UTC -8:00), but yeah historically they’ve had some minor delays but I think 3-4 hours has been be max.
My estimation about 2 hours, at least.
Season 1 had a lot of releases that got overhyped by A.Net. Maybe they learned their lesson
More likely:
They’ve said before that from now on they’re going to be limiting the teasers and previews before the actual patch to help prevent spoilers and such.
ANet seems more focused on narrative, it’s probably why we have fewer gameplay mechanic updates compared to narrative / content updates. Just a bit sad that S1 wasn’t well liked (although I’ll still sure that the hate-band-wagon is partly to blame). So all hope for the best for S2.
THe Yakslapper achievement would take someone about 4-5 years of doing nothing but killing doyalks.
There are a couplehave have gotten Yakslapper already so it’s doable in under 4-5 years.
No one could possibly got even close to have yakslapper.
As of today, game have been out for 674 days.
1 000 000 / 674 = 1483
1483 / 24 = 61So to get yakslapper by today, you would need to average slightly over 1 dolyak kill per minute, 24/7 for 674 days straight, Without taking even a bathroom break.
So yeah, giant slayer is really a walk in the park compared to that.
+1 for math.
And why would you not want Tengu as a race or another continent to explore? Why is this so appalling to people?
Take your favorite song, turn the volume up to max and listen to it 24/7.
It’s not really the content that people disagree with.

1 more day!
Woot! Although they’ll probably only launch it at like between 19:00 and 21:00 where I’m living so I’ll probably only get to experience it the next day. Still Woot!
Ah… Cantha… a land we will probably never see in GW2 simply because NCSoft finds Asian themes offensive now in the games they publish.
See? That’s the hipocrisy of the modern world.
One the hand one, the European themes this game is made of are not offesnive ( according to ANet ) to us, Europeans, but they assume that the Asian ones would be offensive to Asians.
I’ve never heard bigger, self-contradictory bullkitten in my life, tbh.
Here I thought I was the only person that felt this was bullkitten.
+1,000
Is there any evidence for this? Or is it one of those things…
I wondered about what the dragons is. Are the dragons themselves maybe champions of something? Are they fully self aware or are they more like some sort of a natural force? If we succed in killing them off, would be solve a problem or create a bigger one?
To me it seems they are a vital part of how Tyria works. Kinda like how the occasional fire is good for some forests. There are even certain trees that depends on fire to breed.
I have the same questions myself, and I’m torn as to whether I want them answered or not (will the answer ever be as entertaining as the mystery).
However my working theory is that EDs are naturally occurring. With a large amount of magic available beings will inherently attempt to consume as much as possible turning into ED like creatures, or maybe the magic naturally condenses (like how some elementals are formed) to form magic eating ED type beings.
When an ED dies a vacuum is created which is simply filled by another powerful-similar-type entity. My guess is that Tequatl was starting to turn into the next Zhaitan before he was killed and that there’s another champion out there doing the same right now. If no minions are left then either another ED will take it’s place or if the magic is left alone long enough it will form into a new proto-ED.
But that’s just my unsupported theory.
I think we’ll find Malyck’s tree, and it will consist of Sylvari minions of Mordremoth. Malyck went to find his tree…and didn’t like what he found, and now we have to rescue him.
and we’ll discover that the playable Sylvari were meant to be his Minions, but their tree was altered by Ventari’s Tablet.
I’ll probably concede that the other tree might be minions of Mordy, although I’m still a bit disliking of the Sylvari=Dragon minions, if only because I like being argumentative.
I called the Inquest involvement months ago:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/lore/sylvari/Why-all-the-Sylvari-hate/page/2
“When the cyclopian golem servents of Mordremoth come stomping out of the jungle, I’m going to say ‘told you.’”
So… … Told you so!
Even a broken clock … (assuming it’s not digital of course)… :P
I’ve always felt Norn and Charr are true bros. They love to fight, drink, and are very skilled craftsmen.
Charr and Norn have a mutual respect for each other as warriors, although the Charr have a superior military force they admire the individual Norns fighting spirit. So that’s true, not sure if I’d see too many Norn and Charr drinking together in a bar though. Norn would be all about the Spirits and Charr would be: “Charr need no Spirits!”
Sylvari and Asura are more like Misfit Buddy Cops than anything.
Well their capitals are relatively close to each other, so they need to have a certain amount of political stability among them. Luckily the Asura Council are so self-centered they barely notice anything else and the Sylvari are ruled by the Mother Tree which seems so goody/altruistic/pacifistic you could probably set her on fire and she’ll still forgive you.
Although in general (and slightly alluded to in game, if not in the personal story which is Pack focus and the Living World which is LA focused) there’s some underlying tension between the races particularly in less diverse areas of Tyria.
Probably the wrong forum and it’s also only a speculation as far as I know
Gems for gold will go down when more players exchange real money for gems, then to gold, if my understanding is correct. Gem prices go up because more players want to use their gold for them, rather than buying gems with real money to convert to gold. But, to hear more in depth conversations on it, check out the black lion trading forum. There are a fair number of threads on it.
So never then. There will always be players who don’t use real money.
On the bright side eventually the gem → gold ratio will be very attractive.
