What's the Appeal of Alpine Borderlands?

I don’t think such exaggeration is helpful.

Where was the exaggeration? No, seriously, please do tell. This is the case when we compare the borders.

Hills for example. On Alpine you can stand in one place and see the north door, cata spot, central inner, the path to north inner and only have to move like 10m to see the south door (where you still have clear view on cata spot and the inner central area).

Hills on Desert you can see south inner and south outer, that’s about’s about. Everything else is hidden in a maze which force you to run around to look over everything. and the distances are pretty far (if you are at south gate, you probably have to run longer than from SW tower to hills on Alpine just to look at the north gate – and that’s not counting north inner gate).

Dont even get me started on undercroft vs bay. On bay you could just run from north gate straight south and you will check all the doors, all the walls, and the lords room along the way. Undercroft… yeah… kitten that kitten.

And thats why you record videos… It is still theoretically possible with bog standard ingame skills. Downed rangers can get pets to heal more than you can damage them and if their heal is up when they res they will be near 100% HP in a sec.

If you report someone, just report and block. Its not worth the effort.

At any rate, were you able to defend all of Alpine with just 5 people?

5 people could easily control and scout entire Alpine with minimal movement, requesting reinforcements in time.

On Desert you need 5 people just to scout undercroft and you will probably still miss the 20 people already on the lord.

The size difference and layout is actually quite massive.

Since when can’t you bubble against acs? I never really paid attention to it as one AC alone doesn’t kill me (70% zerker) but I was pretty certain they do protect against projectiles.

Yeah they do. But ACs doesnt fire projectiles.

You cant bubble ACs any more than you can bubble necro marks.

In a single line (well, not really):

Alpine border is about fighting between towers and keeps and defending your home.

Yep, that’s it. The entire way its designed is that fights happen in a line from tower to tower, keep to keep. When you took SW tower and wanted to take bay, the battlefield was at outer south bay. When you took NE tower and wanted to take garrison, the battlefield was NE outer garrison. That’s where you went and that’s where the enemy came to meet you. It also felt like it was your battlefield. On your home border, the line south of bay, south of hills was like a “dont go here, this is our home” thing. You wanted to protect it – the waypoints at T3 was a clear boon and goal, further strengthening this view of the the entire border. If you got that, you could hold the line. Add small touches like an easily defended “second line” with NW tower, garri and NE tower and the design of Alpine become clear. You attack or you defend. That is your purpose. Keeps where even designed to be easily overlooked by scouts and thus easy to rush to defense, while at the same time you could offensivly scout them easier.

With Desert border, this is all kittened up beyond recognition. Towers are too far between each so that the battlefield between them no longer exist. And if there is just a hint of them there… its 3 canyon obstacles deep. Without T3 waypoints, the defensive lines become blurred and non-existent. Garrison is much further away from the spawn compared to Alpine and NE/NW tower is far away and above it, completely removing the second line of defense. Then add the fact that the keeps and towers are kittening huge, scouts cannot get a grasp of the enemy anymore. You can round a corner and oh look, 50 kittening people inside your garrison.

Trebs cant protect themselves, but they do have supply drain. Ballistas have a straight shot so need los, it can also be blocked by players/skills.

Didnt Anet fixed the LoS abuse a few months ago?
So it is using the player camera LOS instad of character position los? o.O daf**?

Yes, they did “fix” the LoS.

Then they broke it again by adding the camera settings. ACs can hit around walls. Hell even the firing effects become all kittened up as the arrows are hitting from an angle based on terrain. On flat ground you dont notice, but lets say you are on a steep hill with a wall and arrowcart behind/above the wall (whatever, in front). The arrows will hit from behind you, ie the complete opposite direction of where the AC is. That’s how messed up LoS is.

ACs should not be ground targeted AoE. They should be physical projectiles shooting from the AC to the target area (cata scattershot probably being the best analogy) and you should charge fire it.

Its the only way to fix this.

Two weeks ago we polled the WvW community about Desert versus Alpine borderlands. The majority of players asked us to bring Alpine back. We’ll do that. It actually takes quite a bit of time to dust off old content and bring it up to the current game state, so it won’t happen in time for the quarterly release. Instead we’ll launch the quarterly update with improvements to Desert, use that as an opportunity to get the community’s feedback on those changes, then we’ll swap to Alpine when it’s ready. Changing borderlands maps like this will disrupt matches in progress, but we think that making changes on live servers, where everyone can test, is worth the cost.

Ah but there is no cost as long as you freeze glicko. Testing on live is great. We need a little break every now and then from the “serious” WvW, just like sPvP. Hell even another Golem Week™ is acceptable if it doesnt impact the matchups.

Whats the timer on now? Afaik its been pretty short for a long while.

But regardless its incredibly easy to fool it so there is really no point. Those that want to AFK for an hour will.

If you want less queues, the only way is to work together with the community and spread out across the borders. If your server still got tons of queues after that, well it only show you are overstacked. Play more EoTM or something.

There where no enemies. Both Abba and Viz only nightcap. FSP has probably had 5x the commanders on borders.

You can unlock glider skins. I got a sparkly black one with green trail and havent bought any skin. No idea how it was unlocked though, if its just gliding rank or something else.

Also you are not “forced” to replace stock. Seriously, its just a skin.

“It’s just a skin.” So are legendary weapons, yet they are still big and important part of the game and a lot of people seem to not be happy about getting only 3 new legendaries with xpac. And I could obviously give many more examples, since this game is filled with shiny stuff to get. Don’t say it’s just a “skin”. For some people skins and character customization is main thing about the game. It’s what drives them to play it.
With your logic, no one should be complaining, because we could say, hey, “it’s just achievements, just some numbers next to your nick, who cares” or “it’s just gold, why do you play the game for virtual money?” or I can make same point for whatever you enjoy in the game. It’s all for your entertainment.

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I said. Yes, its just a skin. Maybe its what drives people to play but that is irrelevant – they are still not “forced” to get it in order to play the game. The post I quoted acted as if the game was unplayable without getting gemshop skins.

Of course you should complain about what was promised but not delivered.

I do believe that was the glider that came with prepurchase of HoT.

Well then it is technically a reward, but I suppose that point stand then.

Thats not the answer.

The correct answer is proper map objective layout so that fights between objectives can be found, which also flow naturally into the objectives. EB has this layout. Alpine had this layout. Desert do not. Desert make up 3 out of 4 maps. WvW fail.

Zerg, roaming, class? There are lots of options to absorb condi dmg. Vitality already increase your defense against it since you got more HP. If you run full zerker with zero condi removal… well that’s your own fault.

If they have nearly zero daytime presence, how is that different from other servers having zero nighttime presence? When they’re nightcapping for all of their points, how are they outstripping the other servers who are daycapping for all of their points?

I can’t remember the site that lets one see what servers had how many people on as a graph versus time—perhaps the nightcapping spree lasts longer?

Take a peek on score curve this weekend if you want to have a good laugh. Also, its all about extremes and the concept of exponential growth and loss, since its a shared ppt pool. Keep in mind points per dolly as well, again an exponential growth which only increases as they gain tiers. Even vs no zergs, small groups/solo players will be constantly backcapping. Good luck going even a “high” 400 ppt daytime/primetime, its actually not that easy. During the night however, servers can tick 600+ with ease and dollys pumping out points like theres no tomorrow.

In the current matchup, the server with the highest KDR (~1.8) is fighting both the two on the very lowest in KDR (~0.4).

But guess who’s gonna win? Yep, probably Abba, the lowest ranked server there. Why? 100% pure nightcapping. No, seriously, we cant even call them Blobbadon anymore because their zergs no longer exist, they have had nearly zero daytime presence!

But whatever. I just find this absolutely hilarious.

The exact same population & coverage issues are present in this map.

Just tried to level up some hero points tonight on an Engineer and spent the whole night getting wiped by zergs 3-4 times our size. Must have gone 2 hours without a successful tower cap – they were everywhere.

Ah but tbh, other games have already solved this “problem” – transparency in map population and transfering between instances.

In theory the system would work like this: on instance 12 the population is 60/12/6. Badly imbalanced, right? So then there is a call to arms. Either the other two sides reinforce instance 12 with troops so that the battle can continue – they get a boon for joining of course – or the instance shut down, handing a victory and points to the outmanning force. The closing of the instance will ensure that the leftover forcs are spread out and that the victor cannot exploit inactivity (they still get points, but not like ticking 600 for 8 hours).

Server identity here would change into something… else. I call them Anet guilds. Servers literally become ingame guilds. So in the case above, there would just be a note in the main chat… “Dont worry, Vabbi got this”.

There is already a system for this in GW2. Its called Fractals Of The Mists.

Why Anet havent made LS1 events as Fractal instances is beyond me. Just like why they didnt just reskin Alpine border to a desert landscape with some extra detail, instead of making the kittenty new map.

Merging servers is not a long term solution. It will make WvW slightly more playable for those on bottom tiers, but it doesn’t fix the underlying problems like stability nerf, class balance, guild gimmicks, pve borderlands, pvd, coverage wars etc.

Of course its not. How could it be? Point is that T9 doesnt need to exist. Probably not T8 and T7 either. But you got to start somewhere I suppose.

Even if all those things you mention are fixed… T9 still doesnt need to exist.

You forgot one.

PPT and PPK scaling based on population – Scaling max PPT down will reduce extreme score curves during times of population imbalance and not allow one server to exploit the other two servers inactivity for matchup winning gains. Scaling PPK up will make players matter more during the same times.
Pros

  • It doesnt change the current WvW layout.
  • It fixes whats probably the biggest issue in WvW.
  • Its universal across all tiers no matter the time.

Cons

  • It will make nightcappers cry salty tears.

It appears that the game is in a bit of a crisis at the moment and there is quite a lot of repair work to be done over the course of the next 12 months or so both in regard to rebuilding customer relations and in fixing some of the many broken things in the game.

Crisis? What crisis? AFAIK GW2 is doing pretty well on the income side. There may be broken things but people still throw money at it.

The only thing Anet need to do to keep us interested is to:

- Work on WvW.
- Continue with sPvP seasons and obligatory tournaments.
- Start doing LS in PvE to keep the world going forward.

If they can do that while working on a larger expansion in the future, I see no issues with another €50 “all inclusive expansion” in a year or two (ie GW2+GW2HoT+GW2WhateverIsNext). All they need to do is not be god kitten kittened and botch the marketing. Just say yeah so you own GW2 HoT already? Here have a €15 discount or whatever. GW2 vanilla owners get a €5 discount and a pat on the back for finally getting with the program.

Simple answer to that: Give them 10,000 range so that we can actually siege objectives from afar without any danger of ACs, ballistas or quickly responding (hitting another cata from that far would require skill and advance scout).

Hell that would even solve a problem with DBL. Give trebs like 30,000 range so you can hit garri from hills/bay or nw/ne tower.

Well EU tier 9 definetly need to go. I dont play there but I can honestly not see that being fun for anyone. Just look at it. Give a weeks warning, a default server to transfer to and free transfer of choice (the default is where you go if you dont use your free transfer). Then, shut it down.

Shadowplay with a 2.5gb ramdisk for 5 minutes of history recording (since I only have 2 SSDs in my machine, I didnt want to continually record on them). It allow you to easy capture those wtfjusthappenedmoments … lol.

Windows Movie Maker for editing. By being a little creative, you can censor out the chat box with text (ie black ascii boxes) but you loose the ability to bake in other text. That can easily be done through youtube commenting though. Cutting and sequencing video for black in/black out and adding music is incredibly simplistic.

If you want something more complex for editing look elsewhere.

Have suggested that all siege have the same basic rules (ie rotate with 1/3, power up range with 2 and fire the projectile by releasing) for a very, very long time.

Anet doesnt want to fix arrowcarts. We say nerf it, they buff it. I dont know if Anet only played on NA servers and how it is there, but on EU we got certain servers that will happily build 3 arrowcarts to defend against 10 people… when they themselves are 15.

If the reaper is as good as the scrapper, he’s probably going to win no matter what. As above said, reapers hardcounter scrappers. Condi pistol/pistol might deal a ton of damage fast but as soon as you get condi transfered you kill yourself. Power hammer will just be kited for a while and then mowed down if melee/ds happens.

I have had some intense reaper fights lasting a good while on my hybrid gyro pistol/pistol build but in the end my thought is always that I was simply the better player. He could have won. I have seen reapers roflstomp me by barely even doing anything.

I am telling you, burst their health down until they pop shroud. Proc bukwark, and blast gyro, stack retaliation and light aura, block and heal. Their shroud will be gone, you will be full health, and their normal health bar melts fast. Control heals with poison from EG. Ttying to run a condi build against a reaper in spvp is slow suicide.

And I’m telling you that the better player on a reaper wont allow you do to that. They will dump their marks and have you down to 50% hp before you get close for your hammer burst. That’s often about the time when they dump every condition in the world on you followed by an hour of chill and a DS melee burst to face.

But hey look at the bright side, if you find it easy maybe you’re just that good. Or I’m just plain bad at it. I dont know.

DBL Redesign: Catas for outer also hit inner

Catapults, especially proxy catapults, fire too fast for a shield generator to block much of their damage. They can be mitigated but I wouldn’t call it a counter.

You dont use the block the though. That’s not the true strength of a shield generator.

The thing is that a single shield generator can much faster to the point that it can disable 50 catapults permanently by knocking people off them (they dont have time to shoot between sheild gen force balls).

Sidenote: Assuming you can cram 50 catapults in a 240 radius, hehehe.

Chasing a nearly perma-stealth, multi-blink class through one of the huge DBL keeps is a nightmare. One person’s hobby shouldn’t ruin the day of everyone else.

This, this, and this.

It also adds some fairness. People spent time and resources to place siege in order to get in and take it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a blob of 50 or a group of 5.

Mesmer is a gimmick that needs this nerf handed to them, disallowing a way too easy aspect of capping an objective that is a port.

The problem is the stealth though, not the act of being in the keep.

Anet could have easily done it another way. Instead of marked they could have made it so that being near a flipped keep add revealed for a couple of minutes. Hence no one can stealth there. Simple and effective without destroying the fun and putting a giant bullseye on you from across the entire kittening map.

Concerns about the sentries and marking of foes was raised from day 1. Most people was like “huehuehue now we can see the enemy so we can run to them and fight them, this will surely improve WvW!”.

Some of us saw the real issue – it take away the fun of player interaction and the “job” of a scout. And now look where we are. WvW is kittentier for it. Go figure.

Double Cata spots on Earth Keep is less of an issue since the home server owns the Waypoint into it as well as their Spawn is a minute walk from that Keep. Attackers however have much larger distances to traverse to apply pressure. As a result I feel that this is not an issue at all.

Haha just barely. The time it take to go to garri is pretty similar due to the waypoints in bay/hills. Which says it all about how crappy the map layout is.

To avoid proxy cata…. Probably the same for the treb.
More friendly fire (at least for siege against siege) could be interesting.

Siege vs players would be fine too.

Make it so that kittens cant fight under their own arrowcarts and cannons.

This is nothing new.
Issues changed/vary but have been preset since quite a while already.

Have been running 64 bit on a 980Ti for a long while now, not really seen any issues… Until yesterday when the entire screen freeze and a second or two later the game seems initiate redraw (could literally see it rendering up objects).
Happened like 10 times with around 5 mins apart. The lighting was also broken.

But I havent tested it today.

Immo bug, pff… a bug that is part of ruining an entire gameplay mode perhaps?

Keep lords scale not only to its enemies but its friendlies as well, making it impossible to cap keeps while trying to fight at the same time. Hence it become k-train to win.

As a sidenote, the two best bugs we’ve seen: when WvW reset went berserk and put everyone on random server maps. The confusion was real. Also when they accindentally added a couple of zeros to the damage on chaos storm fall trait. Mesmers instakilled entire groups haha.

Those times you started sieging an enemy garrison at 18:00, staged a full 70 man zoneblob assault at 19:00…

… and still fight inside garrison at 22:00 with all three servers clashing and 60+ resses of the lord.

GW2 is the only game that has made me battle fatigued.

Personally I like the new WP system, I think the problem is the Borderland system (as I’ve detailed other places, so won’t repeat).

If the populations was higher, and enough people wanted to play on the Desert BL maps, I think it could be really nice to see everyone trying to hold their keep in each of the 3 maps. Instead of sitting bunkering one entire map just waiting for enemies to come in.

I obviously realize others completely disagree with me on this.

Or as many others have said, if DBL had the same layout as EB that would be nice.

But on a border, you should bunker up.

That’s how pre-HoT WvW worked. Either you defended home border or you invaded another servers border. Now its like yeah I’m going home to k-train cap everything and hope they dont bunker in their keeps.

So you’re not entirely wrong, you’re just not talking about borders. You are talking about EB.

Its like the Claw Island scene was written for him, and Sieran and Forgal just got given the same ending.

And I will also maintain that the idea was that in the main story, you as the player where going to kill the Risen Tybalt.

Remember, you never see him die. The dragon could have taken him and corrupted him.

The reason for this is that later in the story you get a rather wierd mission thats not really explained, but at the same time its portrayed like a mystery. The one where the Risen suddenly seem to have a commander. Someone that place a trap for the player… Even the NPCs you are with are suprised with the Risen tactics.

Then when you get to the end of the mission… you meet a generic named boss you’ve never heard about. Imagine if that boss had been your mentor, now serving Zhaitan?

Or as said boss himself say: “Enough! You will die, then rise, and I will see you destroy your own allies!”

Think about it.

The only way HoT is p2w is when it comes to pvp but that is where it ends. In a dungeon or fractal a f2p can do just as well as a b2p user.

That’s not correct for fractals. Without HoT your agony resistance stops at 100ish. With HoT 150ish. That’s a HUGE gap.

But who plays fractals anyway?

- Remove emergency waypoints. They are kittened.
- Revert the waypoints to pre-HoT but add them to T4 which require an additional amount of dollys.
- Revert the “bugfix” with contest intervals.

The thing is, sure the waypoints gave an advantage and they did make it difficult sometimes… But for good or bad they also did something else: encouraged massive PvP in both assault and defense of waypointed keeps. If your keep had a waypoint, you wanted to defend it at all costs. If the enemy had a waypoint, you wanted to reset it at all costs.

Todays WvW lost a big chunk of its heart and soul when Anet in their glorious wisdom changed this.

Scrappers got lots of instant stab and options for ranged AoE.

I dont know what you mean with “pushing power”.

Pushing power is basically the ability to absorb damage while dealing forward damage, which is basically exclusive to guardians and warriors right now, though condi reaper can probs pull it off as well.

Ah… Scrappers got tons of protection, 5s of continous block to push straight through while reflecting all ranged projectiles 360 degrees and they can leap in through their own waterfield (which give them protection). When they get there they can pop healing fields that cleanse condis every second. All that while passive healing about as much as a warrior signet.

Damage absorption is not really a problem.

Forward damage depend on how one define it. Comparing melee damage, scrapper will probably rival the guard but lag behind the warrior. On the other hand, you can be much, much more flexible with kits and your ranged damage. In my experience you barely need it though – in zerg fights on my necro vs scrapper I often do 10x the damage on my scrapper in 4s than the necro did the entire fight lol. Reflect and pirateshipping, fantastic combo when they clash.

But I digress.

I know what we’re all thinking is the best 15 man in WvW.

Not to mention all those changes are superficial – its the basic map design that’s broken and unsuitable for WvW. But that was too late to fix and all that could be done was adding a couple bandaids to a chopped off limb. So here we are. With a border that cant be fixed.
