A contest to create new maps. Winner gets job at Anet with design Dept or 10k US dollars. Something like that. Money is saved and money is made on both ends, both Anet and participants win.
They dont even need that. They already have the basic formula of alpine, all they need to do is create different variations of it, spice things up a bit. Anet devs can concept 3 variations very quickly in addition to alpine (woodland, desert, jungle) with existing GW2 art. A while ago I already made a woodland/krytan variant of it as a very crude concept render and if I can then any schmuck can.
That was back from March, the official GW2 wiki was updated long after that.. Alpine IS going to be in rotation.
Wishfull thinking. If Anet wanted alpine in rotation, they would have done it months ago. Getting it up to “HoT specs” would be simple, just repeat the EB migration – auto-upgrade 3 tiered towers, sentries that scout, change the waypoints to work like desert (no matter how much we despise them in the current implementation), done deal. Alpine HoT-ified, with all flaws but at least its in rotation again. Cant imagine this taking a tiny Anet team more than a couple of days/weeks.
If they really wanted it in rotation, they would have done this before HoT released and just enabled it a couple of weeks after.
And even IF they want to surprise us with a newly made, refreshed and impressive recreation of alpine… They could have kept old HoT-ified alpine in rotation and say they are working on a refresh. That would have given them calm seas in the community and lots of time to finish it in peace.
So no. I dont buy that. I see absolutely no indication from Anet to get alpine into WvW again. Abandon all hope, ye who cannot enter here because Anet kittening took it away.
Makes me think the KISS method would have been best. Like winner up -loser down.
But what would you do with the third server? If its +1/-1/0 on a server ladder you would end up with servers sharing the same rank. If T1 contain servers A, B, C at ranks 1, 2, 3 respectivly and B wins while C looses… You would have A at 1, B also at 1 and C at 4, with no server capable of being 2 lol.
Isn’t that what the trait Final Salvo does? I haven’t used it since it competes with Adaptive Armor. Perhaps making that baseline for the Function Gryo would be a good compromise.
Final salvo AoE daze, give you a couple of secs of superspeed and 5s or so of stab per pop. It doesnt knockback anything. Final salvo doesnt really compete with adaptive armor IMO, its just two aspects on how you choose to play the scrapper.
In regards to the function gyro, IMO all it really need is 1 stack of stability on activation.

They already have a tool for doing additional rewards in HoT, they just choose not to implement it anywhere else (especially not WvW) – meta event rewards. IE stay on a map for say 30 minutes, then get a reward based on your participation.
Of course this will lead to karma training – but that’s what what brings activity to WvW. Blobs karma train. Guilds fight them. Blobs fight back or call on their own guilds. Simple as that.
I would modofy the system further by increasing points for capture with every tier objective has. So tier 1 tower gives you X points when you capture it, tier 2 gives X*3 and tier 3 tower X*5. If you are owner of objective, you should go and defend them once you have upgraded the stuff. If you are enemy, you should be more interesting taking those more valuable tier 3 objectives instead of flipping back same paper tower. This system would promote defending objectives you have held for long time without extra “defending things points”. Currently even if you lose tier 3 objective you can flip it back as sonn enemy leaves so there is no real point defending anything. But the new system would mean enemy taking your tier 3 stuff has gained 5 times more points then you by flipping it back couple minutes later.
This would assume higher PPT for higher tiers, otherwise this also promote inactivity (why upgrade a keep to T3 only to inevitably loose it at 5x higher cost than just keeping it T1?). We might even see a situation where the enemy will feed your keep dollys (“wtf roamekittens, stop killing dollys!”) to fatten up valuable objectives for easy nightcapping.
I dont know how it is acceptable, but hey if they give you an answer then quickly ask how no WvW tournament for 1.5 years is acceptable as well.
I mean if you get the chance, no rush. Its not like another couple weeks will matter.
- add direct added points (DAP) for capturing an objective
- add DAP for defending an objective (must be higher than for capturing, or no one will defend)
Points for capping wouldnt work because you can deny a server points by not recapping things. Zerg them down, win on PPK. It would promote poor and one sided gameplay.
Points for defense would be abused as all kitten, if not technically impossible. Whats to stop a server from creating f2p accounts on enemy servers, contest keeps so that they rack up defensive points? How would the game engine determine whats truly “defense” or a zerg moving past the gates and some guards get killed? Your server would literally give points to the enemy. Again, it makes for the ability to deny a server points simply by not doing anything. This is incredibly poor gameplay and would turn the community so toxic it would be a wasteland. People would always blaim commanders for failing attacks and giving the enemy server points. No one would tag up. GG, game over.
If anything is done at all, it should be based off ratios of friendlies to enemies. The basic solutions of having points being reduced during off-peak times are silly. A 5v5 battle for a tower or keep should not inherently be worth less than 50v50. A 50v5, on the other hand… make it based on an improved ‘outnumbered’ mechanic.
Uuuh… You want to make it an improved “outnumbered” mechanic that change PPT based on the population differences during off-peak hours (ie when zergs of 10+ run around capping towers defended by no one), yet you think that the same exact thing with generic low population scaling is… silly? Say what?
Besides, the problem isnt the battle. Quite the contrary. Its what many people on the forum seem to despise (except when it comes to their server nightcapping of course). That would be PvE.
What should a 10v0 battle for a tower/keep/camp be worth? When its repeated 30 times within 2 hours? Just curious.

Well, I think the design of the desert BL’s is fine, I would just get rid of the ‘Oasis’ event and put more focus into how can the minor towers be used better for example, trebbing Gari or Air and Fire keeps.
For the first part, removing oasis… OK, simple. Remove it and done deal, nothing would be changed.
For the second part, you are talking about a complete redesign of the entire border from the ground up!
So clearly, the design is not fine. It wasnt fine when HoT released and its still not fine.
kitten if I had a gold piece every time a commander tried to save a keep but had to run from spawn in such a godawfull maze that the enemy is in lord room by the time you arrive I’d be rich now.
I have tried to like the border and have played tons and tons of hours there and know every single centimeter of it, every godkitten nook and cranny by heart. I can walk from one end to the other with my eyes closed.
It is still complete and utter bullkitten for defenders of their home border.
It is not fun.
I’m so kittening sick of it.
If you want to know the core reason its not working, I made a comparison to alpine a while ago. Smaller size == compact fighting areas == more action == more fun. That’s what a border should be. For grand battles we got Eternal Battleground (I mean, that’s what its called right?).
Just look at it. Look at it…

Agree
EotM is so broken, period. The alliance system there does not work at all – it is a joke of a system. I should call it the margarine of alliance systems
What do you mean not working? I dont think Anet has ever stated the goal of the system.
If the metric for it working is “does it contain alot of PvE that everyone is really into?” then its clearly working beautifully.
gw2 is focused on casual players , thats the reason for the 50% winrate element.
so the noobs also can win.some time ago (2 years ago) we had a different matchmaking system and a different leaderboard system (limited to 1000 people) where noobs were complaining that they cant climb the leaderboards. the real good players had a winrate 70%+ and were shown on the leaderboards while all the noobs couldn’t climb the leaderboards and stayed out of the leaderboards.
now go figure…..
Exactly. Good players can carry a team sure and they can get 70% winratio – that’s what good players do. Win despite being matched against good opponents (well, either that or they gamble the system, but lets assume they are just that good). An average player being able to maintain 70% winratio is not being challenged. Which should be the entire point of sPvP.
So please tell me: what did you want to say to me with your comment?
That its hardly “unfair” that the engie doesnt have more weapons. It has other mechanics in its class design. Complaining that only has 4 weapons when its the most flexible kit class (wait, the only) is silly.
I could understand something like that for professions which already have close to every weapon available in the game. But engineer? Really? We only have 4 weapons to choose from there are still 12 weapons.
Ignoring 6 kits which bring your weapons to 10 and the capability to wield more weapons skills at once than any other class. A warrior has 10 weapon choices as well, but can only equip 4 at once. An engie can equip 5 at once.
Just saying…
and pvp approximates small scale wvw
Hahaha not even close. You dont have to stand on a tiny 3m wide capping circle and hold it, you have an entire map to manouver on. Effective roaming builds and effective sPvP builds can be made very different.
This notion of stab having an icd, is rather, uhhhhm ridiculous, not only would it require even more calculations per minute from our beloved wvw servers, it rewards poor standards of play. We should, as a community, support anets decision to nerf stab, it was done with our interests at heart, but lets just say they did their job a little too well (cue laughter). Lets not bicker over what was or what should be, lets come together as a nation, and build upon whats here now.
And the question I have for that is.. why?
Being in a 60 man zerg while facerolling the keyboard all the time is hardly what I would call “good” standards of play to begin with.
When it comes to skillful play – ie duels and small scale – an icd wouldnt make much of a difference. A single player can hardly CC stab faster than 1/sec (or halfsec, whatever). A group of players would just have to spread out their CC a little instead of nuking a single player, encouraging thought behind their CC.
An icd would only affect the massive CC bombs from zergs that insta-rip 10-20 stacks of stab.
Regarding the calculations, I dont know how it would affect performance but tbh I think it would be marginal.
Lol just go into EB, join a zerg and see how it performs. Put character model limit to low (the other settings really wont change much at low fps).
Indeed, what’s a contributor?
Someone that spent 3 hours trying to cap T3 SM?
Someone that spent 10 hours each day PPTing while the server still lost?
Someone that dueled 1000 people in a week and won every single duel while he contributed exactly zero to PPT?
Or someone that capped 30 keeps, 60 towers and 80 camps while playing 2 hours each night, all of them undefended?
Ah… so wondering if I should just go yolo and get the 980
For GW2? Wont make too much of a difference as its severly limited by its main thread CPU performance. I went from 670→980Ti and sure I could raise settings but massive zergs will still bring you down toward 20-30.
As usual, its all about price/performance as a whole. Looking quick through a review on the Asus 960 Strix vs 980 reference and tested Tomb Raider, its 63 vs 110 fps @ 1080p, 38 vs 67 fps @ 1440p. For BF4 its 51 vs 88 fps @ 1080p, 32 vs 57 fps @ 1440p.
If you can get a good price on that 980 and consider the boost worth it, go for it. But know that GW2 in particular wont really give you better zerg performance by much.
If you take random people each with random skill level and place them in a scenario where there is 50% chance of winning and 50% chance of loosing, guess what basic math says the average ratio of wins to losses will be after 10 matches, 100 matches, 1000 matches or 10,000 matches?
Seriously, its not a mystery.
No new weapon, but… get this… main hand shield.
That’s right. Dual wielding shields baby (and the trait that give cd reduction would double it). Shield toss (autoattack, bounces between 3 targets), shield wall (blocking all attacks from the front for an extended period) and shield slam (smacking them together for heavy frontal AoE cone attack that send people flying).
Seriously, it would be awesome.
The problem for wvw/pvp is just that you are FORCED go take hammer. It provides too much over rifle or pistols.
While I find the rifle… mediocre… You’re not really forced to take hammer in WvW. Pistol/pistol still beat it in 1v1 IMO and very small scale (<5). Its not until you get to groups of 10+ that you start seeing good use for a heavy hammer melee scrapper (and unfortunetly at around 30+ you usually get brushed aside in favor of GWEN meta, might as well go pistol/rifle ranged again). Hammer is good fun though.
I always find it funny when people talk about sPvP core issues followed by rambling about classes. Last time I checked, the only core issue is … [insert drumroll]… the gameplay mode. The capability of standing on a tiny capping circle drives player vs player balance. Only problem is, its the only place in the game that does this meaning its impossible to balance by class, you will wreck or OP it in other modes.
But I digress. Lets randomly tweak some numbers instead. Its worked great so far, right?
DH traps are invisible until triggered.
Traps on all classes are invisible until triggered.
Thats why its called a trap.
Well, with the new upgrade system they actually have a way to balance tactics and their effects on making objectives harder to cap – make it even longer to get to T3. No seriously, just keep overall objetives and T0-2 to maintain the pace of sieges.
I’d rather hear what others think about what should ANet use for their WvW Vision.
Unified WvW.
Currently, WvW is split between normal WvW and EoTM. Merging this into something thats both is IMO the way forward – WvW with dynamically generated border instances. Give each tier their own 24/7/week PPT EB where they are matched against servers in their tier (ie like normal WvW) but generate short duration “battle borders” (ie like EoTM) accessable by all servers where a victory mean a boon to your EB.
Something thats required on top of this is more instance transparency. IE from the WvW interface you would see that your EB has a 50 man queue and that there are currently 8 various desert/EoTM/alpine instances open, one that has 36 players with 1 hour left and a blue commander from your server and another that has 48 from your server including 8 guildmates. You can join any of these instances.
This has the exact same critical issue as PPT – One point gained for a server is a point lost for the other, doubling the impact. The higher the multiplier… well you get the idea.
Its not viable.
ITT: People with Nvidia cards wanting DX12.
Nvidia performs worst on DX12. Check the benchmarks. Tried myself in Ashes of The Singularity. I lost 2 fps over DX11. GG Nvidia.
You lost 2 fps on Nvidia in a game thats sponsored by AMD and coded specifically for AMD? Wow. Nvidia sucks :/
Anyhow, as others have said DX12 will give you nothing in GW2. Its crippled by its CPU performance, not graphics. To compare with something I have been saying in lots of threads, you can actually see the true potential of the GW2 engine in boss fights when something – I have no idea what, maybe stars aligning properly – bug out and make you go from 100 people on screen/20-25fps slugfest to the exact same 100 people on screen/60+ fps buttery smooth… for about 5 seconds, then its back to slugfest.
hypothetically if it was a war , I would nuke my enemy during night & will try to capture locations at night since , most of the enemy will be relaxed during night if I can’t fight back during prime time. very simple strategy..
Luckily this is a game and most people want to see decently fair matches.
Apply that logic to a soccer match instead and try to have it make sense . Without involving nukes.
Last reset we had 110 man in queue to EB and on the one border where we managed to scrounge up about 40 people on commander… we where outmanned. Yes, seriously.
Anet may be stubborn but players are just as bad.
(Seeing the activity data would be great though)
Personally I am just in favor of adding a 1s icd to broken stability so that 2 stacks over 5s offer at least 2s stability, 6 stacks over 4s would be at least 4s stability etc. You wouldnt even need skills with stacks higher than duration anymore.
Boon rip would of course still rip the full stack.
The problem is that you quickly rack up a ton of “rules” thats needed for a system to judge what an objective in danger really is. Its just too complicated.
A much easier way to do it without any consideration to “danger” or any math is to increase PPT by 5 for every objective tier, with a lower base value (ie today you get 15 PPT for something, with this you would get 5/10/15). Now that upgrading an objective is a looooooong time investment, its even better.
The assumption with this is that it encourage “danger” without using artificial rules. If an objective is about to upgrade, the enemy will want to cap it. Hence, its in danger.
(edited by Dawdler.8521)
Saffron bread is the defacto meta afaik. Most commanders also like to drop “ranged” food but personally, I fail to see the point. The closer to combat your backline can be without dying when someone sneeze on them, the more pressure and rapid response bombs they can drop.
See… here’s the thing, who’s “morning” do you speak of?
In the EU? Everyones.
This isnt about some individuals “primetime” and their opposite “offtime”.
Its about certain periods of a 24h cycle that WvW is having so low and unbalanced population that the high PPT cap become broken and disrupt decently balanced matches overall. Low population should equal low PPT cap.
Simple as that. Yet people still argue about players. This is about WvW.
I honestly dont know how to make this any more abundantly clear.
Yep there is a counter.
Its called get your god kitten melee kitten out there to wreck their sorry kitten with a veil from behind.
Going by time of day is unacceptable and unfair.
Going by current WvW population compared to full capacity is much, much better and fair for all players no matter the time of day. If you can get all borders capped and queued on at least 2 sides at 03:00 GMT well then you earned 100% PPT. if you cant… see previous point about being fair.
Therefore the only way to balance imo would be to buff towers/camp/structures/Guards etc. based on increasing or decreasing % depending on the number of people online in a wvwvw match versus the other team at regular intervals, let’s say 5 min for the sake of argument.
5m is too short and encourage timing pop stacks. Better with a longer period that players cant really control. Example:
- Every 1 or 2 hours current WvW pop is compared to total capacity
- Three stages: < 33%, >= 33% and <= 66%, > 66%
- All PPT scale from 33% (low), 66% (medium) and 100% (high)
Wouldnt surprise me if OP plays thief and cant target burst from stealth when the scrapper stealths, lol.
The gyro cd is 40s. Its not the only stealth a scrapper have.
OMG I can’t believe someone in 1 time zone wants to kitten the rest of the world if they don’t play on ‘THEIR’ time. How selfish can someone be?!
Yes, if 700 people play in one timezone and 1 person play in another timezone, how dare those 700 people be so selfish to think their efforts equal that of 1 guy?!
Arguing “selfish” behaviour is pointless. If players can exploit something to win, they will. Otherwise we wouldnt be having this discussion, because nightcappers would honor a balanced matchup and play EoTM instead. This isnt an issue nor can it be solved – the wild score curves however, can be solved.
(edited by Dawdler.8521)
Imagine a fiendly soccer match with 20 vs 20 on the field. The ball is going back and forth, people are trying to score and are having a good time. Eventually, everyone leave the field and the score is 10 vs 8. Lets continue the match tomorrow.
The next day, they run out on the field again for a rematch. The score is now 10 vs 288. 1 guy has been kicking the ball into an empty goal during the night.
While you are wondering how the kitten you are supposed to make up those points being matched against the full strength of the other team, the fan crowd just yells “dont kittening dis that guy, he is as much worth as you even if he can take 280 points and you 20 people cant even score more than 10.”
mind blown
(edited by Dawdler.8521)
The way I interpreted this is: No hope left, better to leave the game. I mean at this point even ESO’s AvA is starting to look more interesting:
https://youtu.be/HdEcsz5V-hE
https://youtu.be/wm5xjSQM1rQ
No it really doesnt -_-
Looks just as floaty as I remember with no real weight to combat or any noticable counterplay. Hell if anything it look even worse than I remember. Hm. Guess I really tried to like ESO back then.
A tip would be to include which part of the world (EU/NA) and what server your guild is on.
Fix? Its not broken. Its working exactly like Anet said it would.
And that would be how Anet pull you in. See all those elite specs winning and owning you? Pay for HoT today to win too!
Make no mistake, this is exactly how Anet want it to be, even if they will never openly admit it. F2P is a taste. An extended demo. A kitten good one for sure, but you need more if you want to be competetive in PvP.
Again this isn’t a night capping issue its a scoring system that’s broken. It’s servers taking advantage of a broken scoring system and the focus to fix it should be the scoring system not on weird kitten like night buffs for structures or closing WvW down during off peak times or the other many things people suggest to make it harder to night cap. Night capping can’t be stopped without running off players, but you can fix the scoring system without running off players and make it less exploitable.
Well the root cause is the PPT system but nightcapping is still a very specific thing.
I am mostly in favor of balancing PPT based on total WvW population. Its fair and doesnt take into account night or day. Low population, lower PPT cap, simple as that.
Either that or closing (freezing) borders when the total WvW population cant even queue EB.
Done full aggro on T3+dredge on my scrapper, but yeah doing it on reaper is complete faceroll. Reaper is by far the most OP elite specs since HoT so its not exactly surprising.
Nightcapping will always be a problem in the EU, period. Servers even get US guilds for the express purpose of taking off hours.
If you want an example, look at Desolation score curve since reset (note: rough times and score).
21:00 saturday (reset) – 60 ppt
03:00 – 400 ppt (followed by 570 ppt an hour later)
09:00 – 250 ppt
15:00 – 200 ppt
21:00 – 100 ppt
03:00 – 600 ppt
09:00 – 260 ppt
Do you honestly not see a pattern here? Night people often whine “oh but nightcappers should be worth as much as you prime time players boohoo” but kitten we have like 5% of the WvW population dictating victory or loss for the other 95% lazy daytime kitten s in a matchup.
Nightcapping is a thing and its effects should be reduced. This is a flaw in the PPT system.
In what mode? I still run rabid/celestial for WvW roaming and its working as good as ever.
For sPvP I currently run the new menders with 4 gyros + elixir gun, its stupid fun lol. Yeah yeah I know, call me “special”.
i thought that was the point of the game play how you want , i dont see having specialized healer gear harming the game unless it was a full party running said gear in a time event boss or something but even then it would be player’s choice so im all up for this idea as long it is kept outside of pvp
And clearly neither does Anet since toughness/vitality/healing gear is already in the game.
I still dont even understand why this is debated. Hell I’ve ran my minstrel/nomad scrapper in HoT PvE because I couldnt be kitten d to respec when jumping out of WvW heavy frontlining. Facetanking champs while supported by one or more dps become dead simple for everyone involved. And you could easily heal as much with more effective damage by using cleric or similar. Whether people like to play like that is entirerly up to them.
