Let’s Talk Scoring…

I am a SEA player. Over the last year especially since GW2 China came out, we have experienced a big drop in numbers playing WvW. Changing scoring to effectively reduce the contributions that we make on scores effectively is telling us that we are not needed in this game. I paid the same dollars as an American player did when I bought this game, I buy as much gems as the average player or maybe even more. I’m not sure if there might even be a case for suing Anet for making a scoring change to effectively favour people in other timezones in a MMO game played globally. I’m pretty sure this is tantamount to biasness towards part of your customer base who have made the loudest criss about “nightcapping”, but for your European, Asian and Australian players on NA servers, you are making it unfair to these customers of yours. So yeah, I hope Tyler you will have some serious considerations about this and refrain from making a decision that undermines a big portion of your customer base.

I do believe that the need to retain the population during times that 98% play the game exceed the need of the 2%. Offtime cappers have undermined a vast majority of the customer base for 4 years.

This scoring change will turn everything topsy turvy and I’m still not sure it will even accomplish what they say it will do.

We needed new maps before DBL, we still do.

I disagree. EoTM showed that we did not need new maps. What we needed and what many of us wanted was simply more dynamic and updated border visuals. The reason Alpine is “old” compared to EB – which has always been the same btw, Alpine has gone through a ton of changes in comparison – is the simple reason that there is 3 of it. Reskinning and tuning up Alpine with different themes was all that was needed. With HoT, desert and jungle on the same design would have been perfect. Imagine bay as a desert oasis or a huge jungle tree. Hills similar to the palace on DBL or all golden like Tarir city. They could also have taken things from EoTM and applied to Alpine, there is tons of new and cool designs. That’s what we needed all along. Variation. Not “new” maps.

I’m wary on the Last Stand mechanic.

Yes, population falters on the leading days to a reset, but when it does, it allows new commanders to try and get started up and lets the big runs take a break. I question if this may lead to potential commander burnout or rising commanders to be shut out of trying to lead.

I dont really see how this is any different from a weekend where everyone want to get ahead. Having a last stand on friday will just extend that one day. The only thing that concern me is that this will heavily favor daytime crews… but then again with the nerf to nighttime crews, maybe it’ll be alright.

Regarding new commanders it’s a non-issue. There are waaaaaaaay too few commanders around to shut anyone out. Hell, even during primetime when commanders are on every map there are still too few commanders. Sure a 50 man blob will take things and engage other 50 man blobs on even grounds, but it’s the 2 ten man minizergs next to it that will allow the blue commander to dominate a map. People are way too scared of seeing multiple tags other than guilds, sigh…

Downed system supports larger groups

Downed state is perfectly fine after the tweak many months back. All of those things you want already exist.

If you aare fightning a bigger group, it’s all about what skills you use and what class. For example, my Scrapper is perfectly suited to res under pressure. I can stealth the downed, I can pop bulwark to reduce bomb damage and I can pop reflect to damage anyone trying to focus me at range while ressing. Some classes can spec into faster res or general support (cleric ele dumping all heals on a downed should be able to keep anyone up while ressing).

If you try to res with like a glass cannon thief or something I understand your issue. Because that would be silly.

Likewise when bombing someone downed, its all about tactics. If its smaller forces, say 6v10, again there are specific skills that can be used. Bubbles/AoE on downed, quickness/invouln. to stomp, ranged stomp, sneaky stealth stomp, heal bomb and group stabby stomp etc.

I really dont see the issue unless you are saying that stomping someone when its 1v50 is hard. Because yeah. It kind of is.

Meteor shower in itself is fine. Its a risk-reward thing with the channel, its got good AoE that can be countered easily as damage doesnt drop instantly. Its a noobkiller and as such its fine. But the ability for it to keep going after an aborted channel make it pretty unfair.

You think its not bad enough for ele to stand still for almost 4 seconds? You want eles to stand still casting for 9 seconds, eh?

How bout we make all AoE pulse skills channeled casts that stop working as soon as you stop channeling? I bet necros would love the change.

How about yes? Otherwise it shouldnt be a channeled skill. The very point of a channeled skill is that you break it by another action. Some allow you to move, true. Some dont. Even if the ele could move freely during a meteor channel, it should still be interruptable the entire duration of the channel.

My advice: just use the darn hammer. If you want some range in PvE, you got the flamethrower and elixirgun.

I still havent found a good use for the rifle. No really, I have tried to like it. Like real hard. I dont see any point in sPvP as hammer bunker better and pistol/pistol kill better, I dont see any point in WvW as hammer frontline better and pistol/pistol roam better. I fail to see the point.

Best case scenario is maybe some use in WvW backlining… but why would you ever do that with an engie?

So meh. Go hammer and enjoy it. I would not recommend the Predator unless you really really really like playing rifle warrior or something. An engie carrying what looked like a scoped .50 cal rifle… and you hipfire it. Uuuuugh. It irks me.

I am assuming this is a bug, but it’s been quite a while now as it was introduced tuesday and we’ve gotten two additional patch fixes since.

Not seen anything official being noted its supposed to be gone. But knowing the changes Anet sometimes make without telling us, kitten if I know.

This would be a 1 world pvp zone that doesn’t have map copies… Think of it as a pvp server that draws players from all servers.

How is this any different from every other class bunker that ever existed and needed +1 to take down? That a druid could maybe take out a player after 5 mins compared to another bunker that would keep fighting quickly become pretty irrelevant, doesnt it?

Problem is that for EU we have 6 tiers, this make 24 maps…

No, that isnt a problem.

The problem with megaserver WvW is how on earth you would solve scoring and matchups.

Without a ladder or some sort of matchup system, it would all boil down to have 33% chance of being #1. Which would get pretty boring after a while. Especially if the sides become so unbalanced that we become locked in a perpetual state of absolutely zero movement. If you kept the servers and shuffled them around every week, it would still just be completely randomized victory. Pure luck depending on which color you are for the week.

Scoring is even harder since maps would have to dynamically close and open or it wouldnt be megaservers. We could do small time slices every 3h like EoTM and tally up the score at the end of a week, true. But that would really loose on of the main charms of WvW – a perpetual battlefield. WvW would become just large sPvP rounds where you only join to win that round.

Short of simply saying kitten it lets do EoTM for everything I honestly dont see how megaserver WvW would ever work in practice.

how can you manage a necro in 1 vs1 or a condi spec without alchemy ? with medic gyro and no elixir C or purge Gyro you have no condi remove ( except eg 5 and triggering it but it is really weak against a condi burst )

You manage it slowly and from as much distance as possible. Getting them down to ~50-75% hp before they even enter rs/ds and get close to you is ideal. Necros and reapers have a tendancy to become very predictable 1v1, first dropping their ranged condi bomb then going into rs/ds. If you can survive and counter that, most will panic as they return to normal hp and watching it melt away. This type of fight is where hybrids shine because you need a little bit of everything to kill your foe – too much condi and you kill yourself, too much power and the necro will probably facetank it while plowing into you because you sacrificed too much toughness.

Alchemy is very possible to run with instead of inventions, sure. I do it when I go hammer frontline. The “problem” is that on a high crit build, bunker down become so powerful it’s hard to replace it. You would also limit yourself to getting speed from somewhere else.

Either way you build, you’re not going to get every perfect trait.

This is the build I currently use for roaming. No, toolkit is not a must (though its good in general and I often swap for it depending on the situation). Dont need alchemy either.

I used to run all gyros, but elixirgun is somewhat better towards perplexity builds and necros in general (purge gyro simply cant keep up).

Automated Medical Response is on waaaaaay too long cooldown since it got nerfed. I would highly recommend Autodefense Bomb Dispenser instead as its a lifesaver when roaming vs gank zerker builds that try to stunlock and kill you quick.

Personally I wouldnt recommend the hammer for roaming either, I find pistol/pistol much better. It’s too easy to get kited on the hammer, the more ranged players you meet at the same time (ie 1v2, 1v3) the worse it gets. Since I started playing my p/p scrapper roamer from HoT release I have meet like one hammer scrapper that could give me a real challenge – and that was after a ~3 minute dance of death that could have swung either way. But still, personal taste.

Well, you have plenty of options:

Go to another border and cap their kitten.

kitten it and play some sPvP instead.

Actually tag up and do something about it. If they could 4v1 you at 4 different locations that include wide swaths lands to enter from that either mean you where outmanned – in which case you fight and die until you win – or you had so many on the border that everyone was running around like headless chicken feeding them while with a commander it would have meant you could 10v1 them.

Okay those people aren’t duelers, they’re roamers. Someone dueling is bowing at an enemy, receiving a bow back from the enemy initiating the fight then fighting them 1v1. Not ganking, that is a roamer thing lol.

And how the heck is a third player supposed to know that the 1v1 he encountered started with two courteous bows, lol?

Personally I dont even find it a problem. Quite the contrary, its more fun when it happens. If the duel was mutual, the duelist that got a +1 will surely disengage. If he does not he’s not honorable enough to even be called a duelist, so the point is moot. The +1 will then probably get roflstomped because he’s in no way built to win against a duelist. If said duelist dies… well sucks to be him, he failed.

Lords scale to everyone within the outer walls (and maybe 50m beyond). It’s fun when you attack a lord with 10 people, get it down to 10% fast and then suddenly do like 0.001% HP per hit… because the lord just scaled to a 70 man border zerg that came to defend the keep.

SM is particularly funny when a commander go “5 people stay and kill the lord, we defend!” and take his 50+ zerg to clash with two 50+ zergs. Yeah those 5 people gonna have fuuuuuuun killing a lord that’s probably scaled to 200 people.

What I would like to see in the center – flatten the entire area and create the mother of all dolly camps with similar fortification to a tower (maybe even a unique double walled tower, placing it between a keep and tower).

Why? Because it would be a hub connecting all parts of the map and something desirable to fight over and control.

While they are at it, this could also fix a major layout issue – remove the camp between spawn and garri and move garri closer to spawn. Hell this might even put it in treb range of side towers (outer anyway).

I think, most of you care too much about ppt. And for what? One lousy chest more than the other will receive at the end of the week. C’mon, are you serious? As you have already written, you get better fights and action during primetime than other who are playing in the off-hours. That’s, in my eyes as a longtime wvw’er, more worth, more funny, more challenging than the boring pvd during the off hours or when dominating a timezone.

No, everyone is surely joking with you.

I can just imagine how popular CS would have been without score.

“No one won!”
“But did you get any kills?”

Golems are built on the same principle as Asuran physiology, which means they often have an inordinate amount of light air in their heads and sometimes achieve a minor amount of accidental flight. It’s great when you want to subject golems to microgravity simulations but not so much when you want them to run fast.

all these data shows that they need to step up their game on those times.
If the server knows their weakest times, then they should think about putting people up for those times, isn’t that what the top tier war councils are for?

Unfortunetly in the EU about 98% of the server populations (ie normal people) work during the day and sleep during the night. But I have an idea. A very novel idea I’m sure no one has ever thought of. We could… maybe… let’s say… reduce the impact of nightcapping? I’m brilliant!

The numbers speak for themselves, since DBL came out, the WvW population dropped more than 50% of their players.

The DBL at that time were directly competing with ALL the new pve content, plus pvp leagues and eventually even the raids. Also Anybody wanting to upgrade their guild hall was doing the new pve stuff, so you can’t blame that map by itself because of the “numbers” just like holiday festivals come out and wvw activity lowers while people get the wintersday stuff or whatever, happens every time.

Except that, well, we can blaim the map itself.

It was too wide, filled with pointless obstructions, annoying and buggy mechanics, terrain designed as a maze, huge and overcomplicated keeps, objectives that made absolutely no sense where they where located which was a departure from fundamental WvW design and they couldnt even position waypoints correct.

Desert 2.0 was a massive improvement that literally made us sigh in relief at something as simple as removed barricades, but it remain fundamentally flawed in its core keep and tower layout.

So you don’t spend your badges on things like siege blueprints or traps/tricks? More badges means more of those. So unfair to those night-cappers!

So? Again, it has nothing to do with the server score.

The other day I spent ~15 superior catas and nearly 2 hours on trying to repeatedly get through a single T3 keep. At the end of that the enemy still held it and we got next to no badges to show for it.

Do nightcappers PvDing in the dead of night against near zero opposition do this? No. Yet you dont hear me crying about how unfair my fights are when people defend their keeps or zergs 5 times our size roll us.

People complain about teams hunkering in a keep and using siege instead of fighting, but then they want a map back that encourages it.

That makes absolutely no sense in relation to the post you quoted.

Yes, it was easier to siege both hills and bay on Alpine – catas placed on the outside had a couple spots they could be used to shell inner too. And yes, they had towers in proximity of keeps where you could build safe trebs. That meant overall less siege and more easily opened walls leading to more player combat. How the heck do you get this to encouraging teams to bunker in keeps, compared to Desert which is all about the defenders having a major siege advantage with the high ground on inner keeps (ie build ACs and win).

Less badges recieved actually make zero sense, changes to the server scoring rules have nothing to do with badges.

PPK however do, so you’re actually right: PPK should be lower the more people are online. Just like max PPT should be lowered the less people are online.

But see, during ‘primetime’ there are more players online and thus a better chance of more kills. More kills means more loot. Thus, to make thing fair for the ‘night-cappers’ who don’t have that same chance to get a similar number of kills, it only makes sense to lower rewards during ‘primetime’. Have to make things fair!

Loot still doesnt have anything to do with the rules for server scores, no matter how much you think it does. More kills means more loot true. But it’s irrelevant.

With your argument, I can argue why I dont get any sPvP points and lootchests when I am playing WvW? I mean I could have played that. I was thinking about it. I should also get all the ori from an orr mining round too. Because that’s loot I would have gotten if I wasnt asleep. Oh and 3 precursors. I’m sure they meant to drop.

Your point is pointless. As long as killing 1 player or 1 NPC give the same exact chance for loot, killing 1000 or 10 is irrelevant. Everyone will be different. You kill what you kill, end of story. It doesnt unbalance the whole matchup system, unlike runaway PPT gains during low pop times.

Badly ie the same. You do realize that before the merge Abba was totally dead primetime and daytime? They had near zero coverage. No more glory days. They only kept afloat (and won) on a very, very dedicated nightcrew.

I’m done! WvW will no longer exist in my life. This is possibly the dumbest thing done to date in this game. People in less populated tiers where there for a reason. We all get merged into high population, not only do we have to contend with queue but now we have to deal with all the broken builds, the hacks, those that manipulate any little advantage they can find with a broken system to troll people. I have been trying to give this a chance since the start of this beta, I have been in T1 before being from SoR… The game was newer then, we didnt have the the balance issues to the extent they are now from the introduction from HoT. You mix this all together and in this tier the only thing you can do is 1) Join the Blob…. 2) drop to the same level and run the same dumb few builds you find on metabattle that are all bases on HoT classes, or 3) run a havoc group and have the blob hunt you down every few minutes. There is no skill in these tiers, its all about your blob out lasting your opponents blob or running a hack of a build and targeting randoms for giggles. I’m no longer posting here, I’m done with WvW.

So wait, you’re saying that low tiers just ran with kittenty/mediocre builds and let opponents kill them… for fun? To keep things equally low level?

That sounds kind of silly.
