So basically I’ve been playing a bit GW2 recently, and I’ve now got an engineer which is about level 43, which is my highest level character.

I was starting to think that maybe it could be fun to try some dungeon stuff, but I’ve read a lot of horror stories here on the forums about having to be a fully decked out lvl 80 warrior in order to do any dungeons at all.. So would it make sense to try getting into it or is dungeons basically not an option? :o

Don’t bother.

Just get to 80 first, it’s easy anyway.

I don’t really care how easy or hard things are to get. If I want them, I’ll get them always.

Time gating is just an obnoxious mechanic. With time gating, you can’t try harder at something and be rewarded. You just meet the minimum requirement and that’s it.

In this case, it’s a piddly requirement. I login after dinner and knock out the daily in 15 minutes…then that’s it. Nothing else to progress it further. Kinda silly.

It’s better than people logging in for 24 hour epic sessions and getting all their end game gear in 1 night and having nothing else to do. You know there are some people out there like that and that’s why ANET has chosen this mechanic.

Commendation vendor cost for 2 ascended accessories:
2x (12 guild commendations + 5 gold) = 24 guild commendations + 10 gold
24 guild commendations are earned through performing 12 guild missions in 12 different weeks (each of which awards 2 guild commendations). This time period of 12 weeks can be halved or more if you have access to more than only Guild Bounties.
10 gold is earned partly through those same 12 guild missions (50s per guild mission x 12 guild missions = 6 gold). The remaining 4 gold must be earned in other ways.

There, quantified enough?

You make a lot of assumptions here.

You assume that the player in question will make it to EACH and every guild mission without fail.

Guilds are free to start a guild mission multiple times during a week. Every participating member can only receive the full reward (with commendations) once per week. It is really not a stretch to assume that a guild can start each mission type 3 or 4 times per week (or even daily) in order to make sure that all their members who want to participate get to participate.

Ugh, I hate feeding trolls, but here it goes.

Bottom line is, if you don’t feel like investing time in a game for whatever reason, then you shouldn’t expect to be handed free stuff.

Being a part of a guild and doing guild events requires MORE time spent than just doing dailies, since you are also most likely doing dailies ON TOP of guild events.

Time spent is a cost.

ANET has given you the option to get end game items an alternate way, which MMOs typically don’t yet you still find ways to complain about it.

ANET is not going to lose their mind and start doing things your way thankfully, so it’s rather irrelevant what your uninformed reasoning is.

Question about P/V/T Set for WvW

in Guardian

Posted by: DeathPanel.8362

DeathPanel.8362

Hi,,

My main is a thief, and I’m a WvW addict…I run a P/V/T set with berserker jewels, weapons and accessories and I’m loving the set for 1vs. many encounters when I roam…

My guardian is now 80, I’ve got the Karma for the P/V/T exotic armor and was wondering if that set is also good for guardians, or if it is overkill…

I want agood balance between damage and staying power, I’m currently running full Knight exotic with beryl orbs, valk weapons, and a mix of accessories (knight and berserker) which traited runs me at about 2.7K armor…between 35% and 50% crit chance depending on weapon/set, 82% crit damage and roughly 17k health. I feel a bit squishy at times as I noticed that there ain’t much escaping a 1vs. many fight with a Guardian. It’s fight until death mostly…so I’m starting to think that its probably worth investing more in staying power…and roll with my thief of a warrior if I want damage…maybe guardian wasn’t built for this type of playstyle…

So for you PRO guardians out there; is the P/V/T armor worth it?

Don’t go full pvt since that will nerf your crit chance.

Mix it with some knights. (Maybe half and half, or whatever combination you want until you achieve a crit chance rating and hp you are happy with)

Also, if you run shouts, it would be good to pick up 6x superior runes of the soldier for condition removal in your armor.

Gear for a Guardian

There are primarily 3 routes people choose depending on their playstyle.

Berserker gear.
Clerc gear.
PVT/Knights gear.

Since you want to center yourself on healing and support, probably either cleric or PVT/Knight.

Even the trash mobs like say Dredge at 40, you really want them dead ASAP, if they don’t die optimally they start dazing/nuking people and downing people, in this dungeon content the best offense is by far the best defense, things like protection, hammer/staff CC, projectile blocking/reflecting mechanisms are king.

No one’s arguing that dps isn’t an issue in high end instances. As I’ve mentioned before I have a full berserker set for my guard as backup for specific cases.

The point is guardian dps contribution to a team is not comparable to many other more dps focused classes. The question becomes does the extra damage you gain from dps build guardian outweigh the losses in support/boon duration in that situation.

As a guard you spend most of your time applying boons and cc type skills that are low in damage anyway compared to other classes in that situation you mentioned, so speccing for damage doesn’t actually boost your team’s overall damage % by much if at all while it certainly decreases boons and personal survivability. (Even cleric guards have higher dmg mitigation than zerk guards)

And while mobs will 1-2 shot you in higher lvl fractals, having extra toughness can mean the difference between being 1 shot and surviving.

You assume that the guild would have enough INFLUENCE to trigger those missions on the exact intervals.

The influence cost to start a bounty is really not a problem. Unlocking them is darn expensive, building one bounty isn’t.

These are still all costs associated with actions not taken into account by the poster I responded to.

Should be no problem as long as you have the healing power, power, and the correct traits.

Whats the minimum amount of armor i need for dungeons? 2.5k? 3k?

It depends on what build you go with. Currently I’m running 3.3k but that’s with my pvt/knight(half and half) build since I’ve been doing wvw alot.

I just want to emphasize though, that if you do go full clerics please be sure to have 30 points at least in Honor, because clerics gear have no hp bonus and in that case you’d want the hp bonus from that traitline. (The extra healing power from that traitline also helps)

You’ll have about 16k hp with full clerics with those traits. It may not sound like alot but due to your healing, protection and armor it will be very difficult to kill you.

I would definitely recommend some form of staff/sceptor + shield setup for full support spec. (staff for speed/might buffs and combo fields/utility, sceptor + shield for range, immoblize, and utility)

To further support you could take traits like writ of exaltation and pure of voice. (Larger symbols, shouts convert 1 condition from team to a boon)

Those requirement for your comparison to work is far more restrictive than simply doing dailies since you have a 24 hour timeframe every day to do it on your own terms whereas the guild bounties you must be on exactly when the guild is doing it and it must have sufficient influence to trigger them.

There’s also the time spent in actually doing those guild events, which is in itself a cost as well as the influence spent.

At the end of the comparison, your original statement of “far less” is still not substantiated by even your own numbers.

Alvik’s idea of mixing some zerk stuff in isn’t bad either if you want some damage in the build as long as it’s not too much. It’s all about how you want to build things.

Basically if you want to do full support full clerics is best. If you want to do some dmg Alvik’s idea is decent.

What he/she is arguing is that the cost of attaining ascended earrings is unfair, because it is far lower for people who happen to be in large guilds than it is for people who don’t like to join large guilds.

You have no evidence to support your statements that the cost is “far lower” since you haven’t quantified what the exact costs are and compared them.

Hint, there are lot of people that play only on weekends. That doesn’t mean they are lazy, or fail. Usually it means something exactly opposite.

Well, guys wait a second. First of all, i just asked if Support Guardian with HP is viable in the game. And you told me that they are. I really appreciate some people stating that dps guardian with little support is more balanced etc BUT, i didn’t ask you what build i should play. I wanted to know if Support is good in dngs. Since it is, i prefer you to help me make a nice Build, but you started flaming each other. Please help me or you can leave this post. Thanks a lot.

As I’ve originally stated before the trolls derailed the post, full support builds can be done via either full clerics or a mix of PVT/Knight gear with stats like 0 0 30 30 10.

Runes can be 6x Superior runes of the soldier for condition removal, or 2x superior monks, 2x superior water, and 2x major sanctuary runs for boon duration. (Or 3x monks and 3x water)

Since you are exclusively focused on dungeons and not planning on doing wvw, I recommended full cleric stat gear for max healing, toughness, and power.

As I’ve also stated before, I’ve played with all 3 sets on my guardian and my opinion is informed by my experience. (Unlike some of the trolls here posting pictures hitting dummies.)

The point of this thread is for an effective FULL SUPPORT build for dungeons. You are just using situational builds to show big numbers that are not effective in a real gameplay situation. Yes and that’s why farm teams are always 4 zerk guards and 1 mes or 5 zerk guards.

Wait…

Well, that proved whatever I stated wrong. Oh wait…
Thing is, guardian get crazy dps but in doing so they forego all the utilities that make guardians guardians. It’s like playing a warrior with 10k hp. And while this damage would be ranged, warriors damage is AoE. Farm teams typically farm CoF which is a cramped dungeon of garbage minis.

So you admit your point was irrelevant and in a real gameplay situation your build is like a “warrior with 10k hp”.

The difference that separates dps classes like warriors and guardians is the fact that you can build an effective dps focused warrior that does what it’s supposed to while you end up with a “warrior with 10k hp”(in your own words) when you try it on a guardian.

Not really. And even if he was ikittenerg guild, how will a level 20 player participate in a guild mission that sends him into Frostgorge Sound or Fireheart Rise ?

Edit: wth, since when is the three letters N A and Z censored and for what reason? XD

The question is WHY would a level 20 character be concern about Level 80 gear?

BTW I don’t agree with ARenanet stance on forcing players to join guilds to get gear, I wish the was another method to get rings, because I certainly WONT ever ever join a guild. For the 50th time, you are NOT forced to join guilds to get those items because you have the option to get those SAME items from the laurel vendor for laurels/ectos.

I do know that, but it cost me less laurels or time and stuff. I would rather they be other ways to achieve them that doesn’t screw over or at least push you into joining a guild, which is really my problem.

Wrong. It does not push you to joining a guild because you have an alternate way to get the item.

You are simply complaining because the alternate way is not kitten easy. It has nothing to do with guilds. You would be here complaining regardless even if the only way to get it was through laurels and ectos.

Don’t believe in the troll that tried to derail the topic earlier.

Class cannon may work for exp dungeons but in fotm higher lvls it’s a liability. (doesn’t really matter though since exp dungeons are easy enough for any variant setup to work when it comes to guards)

Meleeing in general is dangerous in fotm high lvls and without meleeing you can’t take full advantage of the zerk build.

Glass cannon in high level FOTM works great.

I do lev40 fractals every day and most of the time i’m in glass cannon mode and don’t die much and the scepter/torch/sword damage with 30 in radiance, points in valor and Unscathed Defender is really strong constant damage, it totally takes advantage of the berserkers gear… i’m not a liability, still have all the Guardian functionality, dodging/avoiding the 1shot stuff through experience/practice.

People should definitely play however they want, if being support makes you and your group comfortable and makes things go smoother thats great, but so you know alot of high level FOTM groups do very well without any support players, death is often prevented by things dying fast so the 1shot type of mechanics don’t get to play out, so don’t tell yourself or believe that it’s not viable, I recommend people trying it and knowing it works well, it does take experience in the dungeon.

Sure, that would work if you are in a team of people you know and run with regularly over vent or teamspeak.

But if you pug like most people do full support builds can carry an otherwise mediocre team whereas a glass cannon build can’t.

Sure, but there is certainly a STRONG incentive to do so. For each piece of ascended gear there is one way of getting it that is much more efficient than the alternative methods.

You have no evidence to suggest that it’s more efficient to do it via the guild route.

Even if that is the case, the fact stands that you have an alternate way to obtain these items which means you aren’t “forced to join guilds to obtain these gear”.

Which I acknowledge first by saying “sure.” I’m not in a large guild, so I can’t speak to how hard it is to complete the guild missions. I know (from the wiki) that you can earn 2 guild commendations / type / week -> so up to 10 / week. But even if it’s 2 per week, you can get an earring in 42 days for 5 gold.

Running dailies it will take 45 days + 12g in ectos.

That’s if you show up for every single guild event on time and succeed. Far harder than simply just doing dailies which you can choose to finish on your own time.

Ah, but we are talking about years for casuals.

If you can’t even muster the 30-40 minutes on average daily to do your daily then this game is not for you. That’s the bottom line.

Yes, this game is not for casuals (the people that are a significant majority of players here, by the way). That’s what i have been saying from the very beginning. Thank you for agreeing.

There’s a difference between casual players and lazy players.

Lazy is not a good term to use here. Lazy means to be disinclined to activity or exertion. Just because someone doesn’t do dailies doesn’t make them lazy. Also it’s a pejorative that you are using because you don’t have an argument.

Wrong, that’s exactly the correct term to describe someone who wants something without even putting in minimal effort.

I already stated it only takes 30-40 minutes every day to complete your dailies in order to get the item you want.

If you don’t even want to put that much time into the game yet you still want the item then you are lazy.

You can do one once a week if you want and still eventually get the gear you want therefore it’s NOT hardcore content.

By the time you’ll manage to get anywhere that way, ascended will be already obsolete due to either new tier or level cap upgrade. And you will have to start from the beginning. And then the history will repeat itself, with you again being unable to complete the set.
So, in short, if you do want BiS set, you do have to go hardcore mode.

Unless you take years to do that there’s no chance that will happen.

That is obviously wrong, since I’ve quantified how much time it would take and even if it is slower for those that don’t do things efficiently it’s not anywhere near “impossible”.

Oh very well – it will be possible, but only for a small minority of players. Better?

No, it’s not better because it’s not correct.

There’s no hard wall blocking anyone from taking the actions I outlined.

And those actions don’t require hardcore playing by any means.

Of course they do. You need to:
Login every day and do a daily
Consistently do dungeons for exotic eq that is not available in ascended tier yet.
do FotM daily.
Belong to a big guild, and consistently do guild missions.

All those things above do not describe a casual player, but a hardcore one.
Normal casual player can be expected to, in a month, get maybe as much as 15 laurels, do a dungeon few times (not necessarily the same one, so different tokens), and do FotM few times (likely at levels below 10). No guild missions for him as well.

Even just doing daily everyday is something that likely is not done by a majority of players.

You don’t need to do “dailies” or fotms everyday.

You can do one once a week if you want and still eventually get the gear you want therefore it’s NOT hardcore content.

It does NOT prevent you from obtaining gear to catch up.

It sounds to me like you people want to be handed the stuff for free with no play time or investment. This system is by far more casual than any mainstream mmo game out there. If you people can’t handle it then mmos are not for you.

Totally irrelevant and wrong.

What you call “time gating” is basically natural game progression.

You said:
“time gating is actually making it impossible for new players to get to where old players are no matter how much they play.”

There’s absolutely no substantiation for that statement because you yourself admit that it takes QUANTIFIABLE time for a player to get to where the old players are.

Therefore new players CAN get to where old players are.

Person who has been playing since the introduction of laurels could have as many as 56-57 laurels right now.

Person who joins the game right now will always be behind that other player by 56-57 laurels unless the other player oesn’t play for at least 46-47 days, and/or repeatedly skips his monthlies.

Irrelevant. As I’ve already explained progression doesn’t go to infinity, therefore being behind by 60ish laurels doesn’t matter.

Everyone will hit the ceiling in gear obtainable by laurels at a fixed point so being ahead is irrelevant when it comes to “catching up”.

Actually, you are the one that is wrong.

Time gating is making it so players have to play a certain amount to achieve a goal. In this case a minimum of either 30 dailies or 20 dailies+1 monthly is a time gate as it will take you a minimum of 20 days. Fractals are the same for rings just to a lesser extent. You could get lucky and get your rings in a minimum of 2 days(after achieving lvl 10), or you could take up to 20 days of doing the lvl 10 daily for pristine fractals.

Your idea of “time gating” preventing new players from catching up would only be valid if the gaming progression continued to infinity where the old players kept on getting more and more powerful loot until infinity.

But that is NOT the case here, since there is a ceiling to which you can achieve in terms of gear and progression.

Newly 80 - What should I gear?

in Guardian

I come from playing WoW where there are specific tiers of gear you go through.. Starting out getting item level 219, and then you work towards 245.. Is it like that here, or can I start building towards my “end game” gear right off the bat? My wife and I are both in the same situation. What do you suggest we do?

Start on exotics. There’s no need to waste time or coin with anything before that when you are 80.

Preferably a mix of PVT and Knight gear. OR Full Clerics Armor.

Run AC dungeon explorable for PVT armor pieces.

Craft or purchase Knight’s jewelry from TP.

Alternatively if you have enough karma you can purchase the exotic PVT armor from the karma vendors at the shrines in Straits/Malchors/Cursed Shore. (The pieces are spread out among the different shrines)

And those actions don’t require hardcore playing by any means.

this thread derailed from its original topic.

I would like to remind you that this is not warrior vs guardian DPS thread but availability of a support guardian in dungeons.

I was supporting my original statements about dps not being a focus of the guardians as a class because there are others that can do it much better when my posts were derailed by the troll.

Guardians can go pvt/knights, full clerics, or full zerk as the main viable options. (Any mix and match would just yield a halfway unfocused hybrid of one of those or other)

Since the topic of the post is for full support I recommended full clerics with AH build.

For am while now ihave been struggling with what weapon set combo to use. Lately I have been using gas/hammer and the synergy of these weapons are amazing however I still feel like I’m not satisfied. I was thinking of doing gs and mace/focus this provides blocks to protect against more attacks however it also applies burning every time I block and might to myself as well.

Give your opinions. Tell me what you like and why so I can try and figure this out. Thank a lot for everyone’s time

Depends on what you are doing.

Typically you want some form of range mixed with either utility or melee. (Sceptor/shield and maybe greatsword, staff or hammer)

*20 dailies and 1 monthly nets you an ascended amulet.

*A week or two of running exp dungeons nets you a full set of armor and weapons and enough gold to either craft or purchase a full set of jewelry.

*A few low fractals runs nets you enough relics to get the +5 AR infusion for your ascended amulet which is good enough to carry you through to fractals 19 with little to no issue. (By which point you would’ve had enough relics to get more ascended items for more AR)

You do realize, that the people that will indeed do all possible content for eq in the most efficient way are exactly the people that need to be slowed down the most? Everyone else would be slower than them anyway – and yet it’s everyone else that gets the biggest barriers thrown in front of them while grinders can run on ahead. The system does the exact opposite of what it is meant (according to official devs info) to do.

That’s totally irrelevant. The post I was responding to stated that it was “impossible” to catch up regardless of “how much they play”.

That is obviously wrong, since I’ve quantified how much time it would take and even if it is slower for those that don’t do things efficiently it’s not anywhere near “impossible”.

It’s not really a matter of heavy armor but a learn to play issue.

Devs balance the game based on what each class CAN do, not what average people end up doing.

People with lighter armor who are mediocre in general don’t take advantage of all the evasive abilities and builds available to those classes and end up underperforming.

This then creates the stereotype that lighter armored characters are somehow no good and promotes discriminiation against them.

So I heard the lvl cap is going to become 100

I would definitely not like a level increase since that would mean having to farm a new set of gear for every one of my characters again.

And new players are missing what exactly. 20 dailies and one monthly to get an ascended amulet? A few weeks of FoTM to get the rings?
Ya I’m not sure how they’ll ever catch up.

They can catch up by doing 20 dailies and 1 monthly to get an ascended amulet…
They can catch up by doing a few weeks of fotm to get the rings…

The math is not hard…

I know… I just said that. Not sure what you’re getting at.

I didn’t catch the sarcasm.

Just one of the many things ANet is totally oblivious to and doesn’t understand, a lot of people don’t like being a nameless face in a huge crowd, it’s why I was always in a small guild in GW1, and in GW2. They are my friends, family, even if they aren’t related, you build relationships with those people and they become important.

Everything should be on equal ground, whether you’re in a small or big guild. Scumbag ANet -_-

Everything IS on equal ground. That would be why there is an alternate option to get the earrings via laurels and ectos.

Also, you should consider editing your posts final statement, that’s an infraction waiting to happen.

this is not true since the time gating is actually making it impossible for new players to get to where old players are no matter how much they play.

Lol “time gating”.

Wrong.

It’s called progression. There’s nothing preventing new players from getting to where the old players are if they put in the play time.

Therefore, your statement of:

“time gating is actually making it impossible for new players to get to where old players are no matter how much they play.”

is totally wrong, and not to mention nonsensical.

here is the deal… you got the yellows from boss chests, but you will not get ectos from it. now go grind bosses and enjoy your yellows!

You can sell the yellows on TP for coin, which can be used in exchange for many goods and services, including ectos.

And by playing mace you can heal everyone around you just by autoattacking. I wonder how many bosses in GW2 are beatable by a team of 5 guardians, one hammer the others mace + shield all autoattacking and just waiting for it to end

The same number that are beatable by a team of 5 guardians using ANY weapon.

If you’re not roleplaying… you’re trolling then.

I may have been spending way too much time on these forums… I’m already replying trolls and even arguing with one.

Anyway, hats off to you sir, well played.

To any non-trolls who might’ve been fooled like me, I say: Don’t pay attention to this troll’s posts. Guardians does not use Toughness or Vitality for damage. We use Power and Precision like everyone else.

Wrong.
You are the one that responded to my initial post with that nonsense, so in fact you are the troll here.

Not only do you not have any clues of how guards really work you totally failed to read or just refused to acknowledge that I also recommended mixing knights gear (which has power and prec as you said) with pvt when going that route.

I’ve posted attachment of real gameplay of a zerk build warrior in a real gameplay situation to support my statements on dmg comparison, while all you’ve done is post 2 effectly untraited characters wearing soldier gear hitting dummies.

The fact that in your example you are using meditation build is a joke to the topic of this post, since meditation builds simply can’t compare with AH for support. (Maybe you misread the thread and thought it said, “FAIL SUPPORT for dungeons” ?)

Anyone can see that it is you who is trolling here.

Are you roleplaying?

That image shows that, with equal gear, equal traits (30 in Power, rest pretty much irrelevant), equal Runes and Weapon, the difference between a Guardian and Warrior damage.

Wrong. Traits and gear type makes a world of difference in effectiveness for different classes. If you don’t know this basic fact about gw2 then you are newer than I thought.

A dps build for guardian uses vastly different trait points than a dps build for warrior. Trait lines themselves give different attributes between different classes.

Just mindlessly throwing trait points in certain areas and then declaring they are equal is beyond wrong.

Refer to my above attachment for cursed shore sample of a REAL encounter.
