I would be curious to see what people think are the tiers of current classes. I personally main mesmer, and I do not feel as if it is a tier 1 class anymore, tier 2 at best.
1= omg i’m awesome
2= i can be awesome
3= please don’t pick me i’m fat
Just rank them! Tier 1, 2, or 3.
I am too lazy because I am tired right now, but you get the hint.
You can rank by hotjoin, or by team or solo queue.

I enjoy the pvp in this game because I hotjoin and slay noobs 24/7, but I thought TP now TC was supposed to be good players?
I love it when people talk trash and act like they are good, and then get owned by actually “good” players.
You know how this false sense of security happened? The broken tpvp system where a group of average players would stomp most of the competition.
How does the above happen? If you have 5 players working decently in a pool of 1000, it is not that hard to rise quickly to the top.
You know what this reminds me of? WoW Season 2/3 People getting gladiator titles on little known servers, and not playing in the BG9 (a list of servers supposedly had the best pvp people) pool of players, because the gladiators were not playing “against good people.” Basically nobody respected them because they were playing against noobs and getting the title.
Looks like they just got exposed.
Going to say roughly (if not exactly) the same thing I did in a different post.
Overall you’re not going to find anyone who, when asked about a tournament, will tell you they’re going to lose. It shows a lack of confidence and doesn’t really lead people to cheer you on. That being said – we were overconfident and they brought their A game.
I played poorly the first two maps and I got kitten on =]
As for anyone who is bashing CC, they played extremely well. They rotated efficiently despite the complete lack of voice communication during the tournament, and they deserved to win. All of them are laid back, well mannered during our whole experience here, and a fun group of people. In game and out of game I honestly don’t know why people complain about them after getting to meet them.
The games, despite it being 3-0, were fairly close at times. They weren’t one sided, and CC knows that. But they kept their head in the game and they played extremely well.
If you want more in depth analysis to each game you can ask me in a different medium. I’ve already looked it through. Besides the lack of warm up for our team (our own fault) there were issues that we need to work out as a team. We’ll be back in 2 weeks for the MLG showcase, and we’ll be sure to give them a run for their money!Cheers ^^

Unless I misunderstood something but why did you mention TP/TC and their abilities? It doesn’t appear to me to relate to your topic title. I thought this was going to be about CC v SYNC so I am confused by the TP comment.
the real match was TC vs CC, stop acting like this game actually has fans
the golden boys of america got their buts handed to them 3-0
once they actually faced decent to good players, they lost.
People have been saying this for ages, dunno why so talked up

just wanted some advice on the solo hotjoin builds!
and yeah I think thieves are better than mesmers at this point in time
Hypercrushed
Thieves* are good only if you practice. You don’t stand behind other players, go in for a backstab, stealth stomp and run away. We’re mobile for a reason, and that reason is being squishy like a newborn kitten, but that doesn’t mean not fighting. It means timing your dodges, your evades, knowing what the player you’re against and acting appropriately.
Also you didn’t make it clear if you’re playing a D/P setup or a D/D setup. What’s the question here? How are D/P builds in general? From a W3 perspective they do pretty good. For PvP I’d say less, you don’t need that much stealth, you’d probably do better with a D/D.
Just in case I didn’t make this clear. Thieves* are not OP, neither are they UP, they are a class you need to practice to play well – and will reward you for that.
Was wondering about what would be an ideal build in this current meta, I hate conditions, want burst and raw damage.
I am assuming d/d or d/p
is S/P any good?
Hypercrushed
Coming from a mesmer, this guy rocks.
Using lowells baller d/d backstab build it is pretty amazing. I roll people quite easily, but can get ganked quite easily as well.
I can stealth and do crazy things with this build, and hit for high amounts on everyone.
Was doing D/P with SB of course, but was wondering what else is cool for hotjoin SPVP if I just want to melt face from the shadows?
I hate thiefs, but had to roll one because they are just too freaking good right now ( well…always have been)
Thiefwars2
I tried S/P, but don’t know if pistol whip will get the person for the full amount because the daze is short, unless I pop a quickness prior to it?
I like D/P, but is this considered a kitten build now?

I played about 5-6 months ago, and they were not viable…rifle warriors were better at being a “ranged” class.
Can anyone update me on the state of a cool ranged class, and how they are in SPVP? I want a viable build, are rifle warriors still my only option?
please say no!

Hello my purple friends.
Coming back after about 5 months, back when eles were on top and necros “sucked.”
Current builds I am testing
1) legion
2) shatter 10/30/30
3) shantasm hybrid 20/20/30
*Currently running #3 with s/p and GS or staff depending on how I feel.
What have you guys been experiencing out there? I really want to go back to a phantasm build, but unsure of results…will test tonight.
Seems like conditions are ruling right now?
Heard people say we sucked, but I don’t believe that period.

I just hit rank 27 last night, and I was like…wtf am I doing? There are no rewards besides what ANET deems is cooler looking armor.
PvP for better gear, with a ranked system so my gear is not putting me at an advantage versus newer players…whoa wasn’t that simple?
I urge you to reread what you just posted, if you don’t notice a glaring issue with it just ask I’ll point it out.
P.s. Huge WoW E-sports League? I can’t say that with a straight face. Imbalance makes for great E-sport? You must be trolling me…No one should have a gear advantage. That was what kept games like wow from ever becoming an esport. Why should a skilled player lose to a less skilled player because the less skilled player has more time to grind for the better gear? Skill is skill and that is what it should take to win. Anet just needs to build upon what they already have. Fix the bugs and make a few balance changes. Add some more game modes, ladders, etc. They have a great foundation for esports, but they lack core pvp elements that have already been discussed numerous times on these threads.
gear gaps were a complaint for bad players. Every season gave you plenty of time to max out your gear and then have time to climb the ladder even with limited play time. The only people who complained were the 1500 players who even if you gave them max gear at the start of the season, would remain 1500 players. Good players even made videos of playing in blues and still dominating teams in the 2k ranges who had full gear.
This is so true. Gear didn’t really matter. Because even by sucking and losing 10 games a week, you were only like a week or two in points behind the best players.
Skill>gear even in WoW. I don’t want people talking about PVP unless you were at least 2k+ which IMO was entry point for decent PVP.
If you play for #1 you need the BIS, and it was in pve when I played (s1-s7). (got illidan bow by selling glad, and I had to play with warglaves thieves even if they weren’t the best to win).
Yes you can get to 2k+ without stuff because it was the rating you get by pl or selling/buying.
The system was kitten and there were less competition than now in gw2 (stomp every team except only 1-10 of them in your bg and if you were lucky (like they weren’t doing pl/pve/waiting glad/didn’t stop after 1 loss) you could mb do some intense match.
Again, you act like you can create the perfect system. There is no Utopia for PVP in any game, there will always be ways around the system.
99% of the people on WoW did not do what you just said.
ANET cannot create a perfect system, it is currently garbage.
WoW is currently the best system we have right now, and the fact that you are just complaining about it without offering fixes doesn’t solve anything.
Again, tell me a perfect system that anyone has ever created.
WoW is lightyears ahead of us in this department, and the whole “give it 8 years”
This game will be 100% dead in 8 weeks.
There is no perfect system, but WoW is pretty much there.
For anyone who hasn’t played WoW ranked matches, he is referring to the top 1% of players who would sometimes trade wins vs each other, or dodge other teams because they knew they would lose etc, which is exactly what will happen here, if a hidden rating system is implemented, it is just a bi product that no system can prevent.

You know for all the people who just flamed me for saying WoW is bad? Look at our player base, and look at their player base. And they actually PAY to play.
Our PvP base is getting smaller by the day, and the developers are not responding fast enough, and think players are going to stay in this game.
Sadly this game is on the cusp of being dead and to the point of no return.
*Again, like I said before, you all like to point your noses in the air and say “go back to WoW, I play GW2.” If you you are proud of being part of a dead community, more power to you brah.
You can have the best product in the world, but if nobody plays it, it is useless. This is what this game is becoming. It is just a shame that I have invested so much time :\
Hypercrushed
NO. Do not EVER, EVER, EVER implement a system whereby I have to grind to even obtain competitive gear. Worst idea ever.
As far as other points you made, fine. I’d like to see a 2v2, 3v3, and a 5v5 deathmatch situation set up, sure, but no kittening gear grinding so I can be on the same level as Captain I-dont-have-a-job-and-play-24/7. kitten that.
I don’t consider playing 10 matches a week to get some points to buy some gear “grinding.” In the current state of the game, I could get full pvp gear in WoW quicker than achieving the silly ranked system the game gives me.
If the gear was marginally better, that would be incentive for me. Or…if it allowed you to do specific skills or things from other classes or something. Sort of like Trang Oul’s set on Diablo 2 would allow a necromancer to use sorceress skills.
*I almost feel that ANET has done away with what makes strategy great! Racials…gear…etc. It really takes a lot of thinking out of the game, and almost makes it too balanced compared to other games. It is like saying you can only fight with XYZ in a game with QRSTUVWXYZ. You need to let players be creative.
I almost feel like WoW is like the android phone OS, and GW is like iphone OS. They limit you on options, and only give you what “they want the user to experience.” While this might be cool on phones, in a fantasy world where you want to be able to theorycraft and be strategic against current metas and comps..this simply is not cool.
For now? Let’s get a ranked 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 in. We can hash out rewards later.

I wish they could copy more things from WoW like Castbars, Focustarget, Strafing 100%speed,
As the game is now you kinda feel handicapped when you throw blinds on a guardian coz theres no chance you can swap target and interupt a 0.5 sec cast in a big fight.(ESPECIALLY when the casting-animatinos are the same on many spells)
And not being able to avoid aoe’s coz you’re chilled when strafing
So true. This game most so fast, that most interrupts and CC are pretty much pointless. (which pretty much destroys any sort of strategy whatsoever and becomes let’s just click on this player until he dies).

I agree, people are quick to say “go back to that game.” It has a solid, well thought out PvP system. When the community talks, Blizzard actually listens, and fixes and updates content quickly. I guess because it is P2P.
You all are quick to forget how good their PvP system is. Most of the better players in this game will agree with me as well. I think some of you just want to point your nose in the air and be like “I play GW2, not Wow, I am not an 11 year old kid.”
Don’t hate friends!

ranked comp 2v2, 3v3, 5v5
This was the best part of WoW pvp in my opinion. The theorycrafting on classes etc, constantly changing meta and groups. It kept things fun.
I just hit rank 27 last night, and I was like…wtf am I doing? There are no rewards besides what ANET deems is cooler looking armor.
There is never enough people on to even get into a paid with PUGS as well…
I think you need to rejuvenate your player base before focusing on what you are trying to do in this game. Your main PVP in this game is like honor grinding in WoW…which was fun once in a while, but extremely repetitive.
Stop making us grind for nothing, give us incentives. PvP for better gear, with a ranked system so my gear is not putting me at an advantage versus newer players…whoa wasn’t that simple?
Many firms copy what other successful firms have already done, and profit from it. I don’t think ANYONE will argue the success of WoW’s ranked group pvp system, it was probably the best part of their PVP. It also spawned a huge e-sport league as well.
You have a great game, but you are really about to lose me. I have never seen such a slow response.
I am a consultant for one of the best firms in the world focused in restructuring, and this game needs to be tweaked or it will simply die like many of the other firms who are too thick headed to believe their “baby” is bleeding money, or simply loosing their client base.
Nobody buys games anymore to just PVE, especially not online games.
*The WoW pvp system is as good as something can be at the moment. It always humors me when people on this forum whine about wanting “perfection.” Do you know how many really large companies are absolutely kitten when it comes to their operations and business models?
It shows your age when you ask for things that simply are not possible. I see a game that is so balanced and well built, that it is actually boring.
PvP should act like an economy, when larger firms try to take over in a FOTM or OP builds, a competitor will arise. I was a gladiator back when the title meant something. (pre s3 when it got inflated and just pointless).
Many of you complain about OP builds or RNG, but you need to understand, that is what keeps things random and fun. There are many times I faced matchups where RNG would not work in their favor, and it would work for my favor in a comp that was never “supposed” to win. Most people don’t realize that good players will still beat “unbeatable or cookie cutter” comps 99% of the time.
Please take some advice from a popular game, implement it here, and take what is already almost too balanced and give it a little flavor, and a burst of life into the e-sport world. If it does not happen soon, your game will simply be another “could have been.”

I used to main mesmer, but will be switching to ranger as they are ridiculous in spvp and 1v1.
Followed java tanky trap build, but used a warhorn instead and boy is it better. The utility from the warhorn is disgusting (the circle of fire is too small, and you already have a fire trap). Most of my games are in the 200-300 range, and have staying power that is insane.

Narc has tried to help people a lot actually. I love when average players try to take on the top tier players on forums instead of in game where he would destroy you.
What you average folk (including myself) need to understand is that there is a reason these guys are better than you, they see issues that you guys can’t. Most are ex-WoW gladiators and understand game mechanics, not skills. Stop trying to troll clearly better players that have an understanding of what is actually wrong with this game.
Stop trying to get “face” via words on a forum vs a well respected player in GW2.
Hypercrushed
People suck at PvP.
Results:
-No competition.
-No incentive.
-No fun.Matchmaking won’t help when there’s still only 2 good teams in the game.
-The Truth Hurts
nah gw2 pvp is dead because:
pugs face premades
hot join is zerg fest
quitters are not punished
no middle ground for mid tier players
4v5 games in tournament for solo/duo queuers
no skill based ranking
one boring game mode
I only hotjoin sPVP and I can tell you from a gladiator WoW player here, that if people had to face gladiators in large group battles, you may have some people getting owned 1v1. But when decent random teams (usually ranked like 1800-2000) face gladiator teams (2200+) they got facerolled. For this to happen on a daily basis in paids (which is what I hear) would make me stop queueing until a RANKING system was put into place.
Good players should not be stomping the newbies out of the game, there MUST be a ranking system, because then the good players will actually want to pvp because they know they will be facing a good team.
The mechanics in this game are better than WoW, but the PVP is complete garbage.
You have one game mode…
Back in September people actually tried to play the game, by holding nodes etc…nowadays it is literally like 99% zergfest in hotjoin (where the majority of people pvp in this game).
Any class can do fine when it is like 5v2 or 6v3. Zerging is a huge issue, because it discourages everything. NO matter what build you are, you’re about to get owned because your team is just bad.
At least use some of the concepts from WoW like ctf, make bosses not be able to get solo’d by anyone… remember when you needed at least like 20 people at the end of AB to take down the boss? And even then you might get wiped.
*You should need at least 50% of the game to to take down a boss, or even sav/chief for that matter.
Skill based ranking is another thing, do you honestly think I am going to PVP for fun? It is called an incentive…give us incentives for rank to unlock the cooler looking armor, you are not changing the playing field, but you are giving us something to look forward to. <—- simple fix that would greatly kick start any ranking system that ANET hopefully imposes.
Good day.

These have been really good responses!!! I love where this thread has gone, as I am also new to the ranger.
So other than the trap build power posted, is there another spec that I should be worried about dominating me? Is it safe to say that the trap build is the most used ranger spec in pvp at the moment?
Discuss.

Ah, of course. A mesmer chuckling at being able to kill a trap ranger.
I hope you don’t mean me, but I am honestly looking for a reason as to why people are saying this. I am trying to unearth this mysterious build. I assumed their main build was traps…is there something I am missing?

I am interested in what spec people are using to get this desired unbeatable 1v1 class that roams around owning people? Why are people saying this more and more on forums, is there something I am missing?

Told ya, Divinity. Embarrassed yet? Newbs always want the “best” handed to them, when in this game the “best” is a learned behavior for which you’ve failed from the start.
Well, when people like you report posts and tattle tell on people, it just goes to show the type of person you are. I will leave it at that.
Thief is no longer a priority of mine, they are terrible vs good players. They are in a good place, but I can find better classes to use at the moment. No more responses needed.

Try bunkering
Sincerely,
Riox
The problem in zergish hotjoin sPVP is that bunkers don’t really do anything..because you will die regardless of your spec in seconds if you are zerged, and you add nothing to the fight usually.
IMO bunkering in hotjoin is completely fail.

20/20/0/0/30 osi shatter, staff, sword/focus air runes, super high mobility, focus is great for swiftness, light combo field, pull. This is the build i use for hotjoin farm and tourneys.
Interesting. I tried this build once, the air runes are cool, but I am not a fan of focus phantasm
Had another game with countless spec where I rocked, but maybe it is because I am just getting to be a better player. If I could rate them atm? Had one game in countless spec where I got a glory boosted 400+ points, and then a shantasm 300+ game when I changed right after. Will do more testing tonight.
Note this is for hotjoin sPVP.
I am not a huge fan of pure shatter builds (10/30/0/0/30 ) dunno why…

Divinity, “pros” learned toget good. If you want to be a pro, just play the game instead of embarrassing yourself on the forums. I recommend looking at other threads here for a variety of tips. Also, as a newer player myself, experiment with the various weapon combinations to see what fits your playstyle (which will constantly evolve.) Make use of traps, most any skill that stealths is also usefull. I haven’t found poisons to be too effective, but I’m talking about PvE here. I’m a huge PvPer from Champions Online, so when I hit lvl 80 I plan to do dedicate myself to WvW and sPvP.
Just looking for some starting points, no need for pve advice here thanks anyways.

Personally 20/20/0/0/30 is my favorite. It’s ridiculously flexible – you can flip to supportive vuln stacking, GS cooldown, or illusion damage on the first tree… and shatter or phantasm spec on the last tree. Second tree is pretty locked with blade training and deceptive evasion (sword is too good to give up with blur and swapping for a self shatter build). In addition the “Duelist’s Discipline” is glitched right now, so you’re nerfing your duelist phantasm by 20% while the first tree’s empowered buffs it by 15%. Because of this and flexibility, I would say it’s no contest between shantasm and Osicat’s build UNLESS you are a chaser (where a 1200 range lower cooldown magic bullet is great). I do think, however, using GS on a 10/30/0/0/30 is not the best choice. The whole point of pure shatter is in your face shatters, and GS has zero defensive abilities. Staff has 3 defensive moves (as you can trigger chaos armor off storm) on top of it’s nice phantasm. Plus the #2 can be used to bounce off other people to your real target to make it a gap closer. I just can’t think of a better weapon for a mesmer that relies on shatters. You can s/s, s/p, s/f your other weapon set, but your survival depends on not being hit, and Staff has that in spades.
As for the other builds – Legion is a pure phantasm build where the phantasms tank you up (with regens and protection). This USED to be a bunker build until they nerfed illusionary membrane to all hell. Retaliation on your illusions is also nice. Unfortunately I see this struggling against, say a d/d elementalist.
As for the last, I would have to look at it more closely as I have not tried it. Really, I have not had too many issues with conditions – a sigil of purity/generosity has always been enough for me except against condition builds… if they slap a condition on me, I just go up an slap them back. And if you know you’re going to hit against a condition build, just prep Null Field. The countless spec I see as advantageous as a more tanky build.
As for the mobility comment – Mesmer is in the top 3 for combat mobility. Worst in game for out of combat mobility (and claiming runes fixes that is bonk – I shouldn’t have to be the only class to sacrifice runes for non combat mobility). But to be honest – if I were to pick between combat mobility and non-combat mobility, the answer is obvious.
I agree that shatter’s should use staff, and I originally did
I meant mobility as lack of swiftness etc, I love mesmer’s mobility!
Ty for the thought out response!
Just google “countless pvp spec mesmer” I am sure you will find it on youtube
Keep them coming.

I like to hotjoin sPVP.
I have tried these 4 basic builds (no bunkers, they are stupid)
10/30/0/0/30 for ultimate burst shatter
10/20/15/15/10 taugrim legion build (with knight and berserker ammy)
20/20/0/0/30 Xee shantasm build
0/20/20/0/30 Countless 1v1 mesmer spec
Shatter spec (GS/sp AIR)-
This is fun, but sometimes too squishy imo. The burst is insane, but I feel gimped vs many of the situations I come up against in pvp.
Legion spec (GS/sp DIVINITY)-
This build allows me to survive longer, and imo is more of a balance build. I lack burst, but feel competent to go head to head with any class with no fear whatsoever. IMO a great 1v1 spec.
Shantasm build (Staff/sp DIVINITY)-
This is more of an advanced build IMO, but would run this over pure shatter any day of the week, due to the greater options it provides, and less squishy.
Countless spec (GS/sp LYSSA Runes)-
I tried this build last night, it is basically a more balanced version of the shantasm spec(with more bleeds and higher crit chance, and sigils of earth etc), with one key trait IMO being the difference. It basically throws CC on you back to its source, nullifying any CC on you in theory. Tried this build out for the first time last night, and the upfront damage is not as high as the other specs, but the bleeds it can put out actually makes it kill faster than the above mentioned specs. I am not sure about this one yet though.
What builds have you had most success with? I usually like to help zergs, and sometimes go to cap points. I understand I have no mobility, but I get most of my glory from kills on players.
*On a side note, I got my highest glory ever with a booster from a mesmer last night (427) with countless spec.
I usually average 200+ a game, and am lvl 23 at the moment, and consider myself a good player.
I am curious as to what other more intermediate-advanced mesmers think about these builds, which I consider the current meta.
Thanks guys!
Mesmer fo life!

Your post sums up everything that is wrong with SPvP and why everyone is fleeing it in droves.
Don’t hate the player, hate the Anet.

I like to solo and zerg farm. What are my options? I started on mesmer (legion then shantasm), but pretty much realized this game only has 4 classes lol.
Thief
Ele
Mesmer
Guardian
Which of the above do you think would be the best overall person to hotjoin with, please emphasize build as well, as that is crucial.
My aim is 200+ point games on average, which any of these can achieve, just wanted your opinions.
