so how do you farm silverwaste shovels?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

If your whole guild do the silverwaste event cycle 2 or 3 times each you’ll not be far off the 50 shovels. Guild stuff is aimed at large guilds now so many things you need for upgrades will be a bit of a pain.

Please don’t “buy” the shovels off the lfg people – they are not supposed to sell on there and you will only encourage them (and they might rip you off).

They always refuse to condone or condemn any third-party tool:

So you use them at your own risk. DPS meters are one of those things that divide opinion…

Problem is that everyone will have a different definition of junk. I’d like the “sell junk” button to include minor runes/sigils but not major ones as I always MF the majors and I only discard stuff that cannot be sold for anything at all. Even if it is only worth 1 copper I’ll sell it.

I’d guess that Xpac 2 will include core and HoT in the price but XPac2 could easily be a year or two away. So you’d get “better value” by waiting but you would not be able to play HoT in the meantime. It’s a bit like not wanting to buy a PC today because you’ll a better one for the same money next year.

where is PTR?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

I have direct experience of the downside to PTR stuff in another game. Each major patch would hit the test server a couple of weeks before release, obviously the idea is to test it before it hits the masses.

Three problems:

1. Players would use the experience to gain a trading advantage by buying, selling and collecting stuff on the live server before the official launch.

2. Some players would burn out on the new content before it was even launched so the forum was full of “bored” posts and spoiler posts almost on launch day.

3. This is the biggie. Hardly any of the reported bugs/exploits were fixed before launch because that would have delayed the launch day.

The first two points meant that instead of a feeling of excitement at launch many players felt that they had already missed the boat, especially when it came to making a quick profit on the auction house. Anyone was free to create an account on the test server but most did not simply because you don’t keep any progress you make there so you have to have the time to “waste”.

And in games of this type it’s hard to offer players a preview of Christmas Day without spoiling the real day for everyone.

Do monsters slow down when hit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

From a realism standpoint I’m pretty sure someone wishing to make a timely tactical withdrawal from a fight (aka “RUN AWAY!”) would be sprinting full on to break contact then would slow to a more sustainable speed once clear.

But for game purposes I’d much rather have faster map running instead. If you think it is too slow, switch to walking for a while then switch back…

If you seek out MO’s post about suspending development of legendaries you’ll see him refer to the content pipeline being empty. A pipeline takes time to fill so I’m not expecting too much in this update. We need to look towards the next one for that.

The important thing is that he has recognised the problem and acted to address it but it will not be an instant fix. It requires that most elusive of all masteries: patience.

Can we just go Trinity already?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

For me, a tank is absolutely about taking the hits.
The tank’s job is to attract as many enemies as possible and use the terrain to keep them gathered together at a pinch point or corner then to spam as many self protection/healing buffs as possible whilst keeping their attention. The only time a tank should hit something is when it is necessary to keep the agro.

Done well it’s a joy to behold, but it still does not belong in GW2.

Can we just go Trinity already?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

There would effectively only be one healing class, one tank and one dps, because for each role there would be one class and build that is considered meta, even if it isn’t. The forums would be flooded with complaints that their special guardian/ritualist/druid can’t get a team place even though they can out heal the monk/healer/whatever. Even content that does not need the absolute optimum team would start to have people demanding those “perfect” classes and builds. The other classes will hardly ever be accepted into groups.

With a trinity there is always a shortage of healers, because it is a thankless and sometimes tedious task. Healers can end up not even looking at the main part of the screen and the most exciting part of their job is deciding who to sacrifice when the pressure rises (clue: never the tank…)

That is what the trinity does for a game.

A major, major plus point for GW2 is the lack of a trinity imho.

I like the concept of masteries but the main problem with the HoT ones is the fact that most of the masteries are only useful in HoT maps. By the time you have earned the masteries you are probably done with the maps where they are useful. I’m hoping future content/expansions/stuff will find further uses for the HoT masteries.

An absolute no to open pvp.
Neverwinter had some zones which mixed pve and pvp and guess what dominated map chat. Yes, that’s right, an endless stream of expletives, insults, goading, gloating, challenges and abuse. You could put them on ignore but it made those maps unpleasant to be on, even is you were only there for the pve part of it.

What if HoT maps weren't as difficult?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

Well with Beta-Event 3 (I think?) we had the situation of nerved HoT-zones. Was really boring. And everyone wanted the difficulty back.

In my opinion you can critisize a lot on HoT. But not the overall enemy design and difficulty.

The problem with any beta is that it does not attract a balanced cross-section of the players. It’s always going to be heavily biassed towards the fanatical end of the player spectrum. It’s a bit like going to a gym to do a survey on fitness habits.

HoT needs to be more inclusive.

What if HoT maps weren't as difficult?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

If they make the open world mobs a little easier I believe that we’ll see more folks in the maps, that the meta events will not need players to engage in the taxi lottery and that the megaserver will be able to function properly, like it does across the rest of the game.

It does not need nerfing to the ground, it just needs nerfing enough to make it a little more survivable for the casual gaming majority that GW and GW2 traditionally attracts.

The really difficult stuff needs to stay in raids, high-level fractals etc.

ANET please nerf HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

I always kind of laugh at these threads, because I was on the minute HoT went live, and the nerfs have been real. Current HoT is a cakewalk compared to what it was when it first went live. HP difficulty has been nerfed into the floor, enemy damage and numbers have been reduced, terrain hazards have been all but removed in some areas. I recently revisited a few a few HPs on alts I had been actively avoiding because of how maddeningly frustrating they were at release, like the champion frog in the canopy over VB, or the Mordrem in the abandoned temple at the low area of the start of VB, only to find that the frog had been turned into a commune, and the champion Mordrem had been turned into a vet. Let’s not forget the Vampire Broodmother who could insta-heal herself to full in the canopy too. There have already been plenty of nerfs, and the difficulty scale has reached a point where it’s fun, but not unbearable. Anymore, and it’s going to become as mind-numbingly easy as the rest of Tyria. I’m not normally one to say this seriously, but guys, git gud.

Yeah, you are a real hero. See above.

CC tutorial for dummies is needed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

There are two problems with the CC thing:

1. It’s not very intuitive that you need to use CCs to break those bars. I understand that it is a mechanic of various fights but it does not make really much sense.

2. This is the biggie. Even if you know you need to CC, and you know what it stands for, there is absolutely no indication in the skill descriptions regarding which skills count as CC.

So you are relying on players seeking information outside of the game: wiki, youtube, forums, and most people are just not going to do that. Which is why we often see someone completely losing it in chat at events like The Shatterer, abusing all and sundry for their lack of CC.

“Soft CC’s” are even less logical. Why does chilled count when burning and poison do not count?

Trying to explain this stuff in the chaos of chat before a world boss is rarely going to work.

Difficulty is a problem for some players. That’s why they keep mentioning it. Telling them how easy you personally find it is not especially helpful.

I think that the difficulty level of open world HoT is too hard and that adjusting it will make HoT more inclusive and more fun, and thus probably improve it for everyone except a small minority who seem to want to keep it for themselves.

A mapping suggestion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

When you first start off in HoT you don’t have gliding, or mushroom bouncing and you end up “inside” an orange event circle on the map but not at the event, because it is above or below you. So you run around and just as you find a way up or down the event finishes and another one starts on another unknown level.

And it’s hard to learn the map by walking around it because you get trounced by most of the mobs.

Hehe. Of course, you are correct. You win the Internet.

I HATE Mega Servers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DoctorDing.5890

DoctorDing.5890

I’d be very surprised if the megaserver and disconnect recovery stuff is not very high on the dev priority list.

It seems a fairly obvious thing to “reserve” a slot for a few minutes for anyone who disconnects and then try to place them back in that slot when they reconnect, even if they were not in a party. Maybe there is a technical issue with doing this but surely someone will be looking into it, especially as we now have hugely long event chains in HoT.
