True enough. I still simply think time will show that PvP will be what makes it last.
This is true for many players, and that makes this game good. We all have preferences, and ANet’s meeting them in a meaningful way. But PvP isn’t the only aspect as it stands for lasting appeal. If it were, I would have quit by now.
You can’t say that with absolute certainty. This is your opinion and a point of conjecture. If something is broken it needs fixing or scrapping. I don’t care if its core to the game or not.
1. Usually, I can say it with certainty. I read the ANet blog for three years. I kept tabs on the main site as they released information. I know what kind of game they were building, what the core philosophies of that game are, and I know that if they changed those things, it would be like bringing Street Fighter IV from a 2D fighter to a 3D fighter simply because some people don’t like 2D fighters, which brings me to my next point…
2. Just because you don’t like some feature doesn’t mean it’s broken. If you prefer tank/heal/dps combat, that’s fine, but that’s not what the game was built on, and most people are enjoying the combat as is, it’s working as intended, so therefore, it’s not broken. Same with the lack of a gear treadmill; it’s working. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s broken. There are a lot of ideas that make GW2 what it is. ANet made a game to defy existing conventions, not defy them for a month and then change them for everyone just because a few WoWites got culture shock.
Oh, and sorry Rizzy, but everything you say ceased to be relevant the moment you insisted that gear matters more than skill.
As for 2 i am simply stating what Guild Wars 1 was mostly about. The pvp only characters, the arenas, and everything else proves my point on it’s own. Since this is Guild Wars 1’s sequel it would only stand that the focus is the same yes?
Not really. Sequels can be drastically different from their predecessors, and in the case of GW2, that’s one of the reasons ANet decided to go with a sequel instead of making another campaign; they wanted to make a game that was very different than GW1.
So asking for improved rewards for dungeons changes the core aspect of the game?
If it adds a gear treadmill, yes. If it doesn’t, no, and is one of the things I’m actually advocating for.
No, when I talk about people wanting to change core aspects of the gameplay, I’m talking about the people who think there should be progression raiding, tank/heal/dps combat, etc. Things that, if changed in GW2, would just not make it GW2 anymore.
Also, the anti-farm code won’t affect you if you -and this is gonna sound crazy, but it’s true- don’t farm! Woah, new concept, not farming in an MMO is more rewarding that some low-risk/low-effort/high-reward workaround. Ah mai gawd, sky is falling.
Uh, two things I gotta address here.
1. Spyder’s right: The game isn’t called “Guild Wars” because of some focus on guild-based PvP. It’s called “Guild Wars” because the Guild Wars were an event that happened in the game’s lore, and they decided to name the game after it: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Guild_Wars
2. Just because PvP is the “endgame” for you doesn’t mean it’s the “endgame” for everyone, nor is there any sort of focus on PvE (the numbers speak for themselves in that regard; compare how much content there is in each mode).

I don’t think Dusk understands what people are asking for here.
I may have misunderstood Lance, yeah, and his suggestions are reasonable and don’t impact the core design of the game in a way that would alienate the people who bought the game knowing what they were getting.
But I have seen a few people insist that the only way this game could be good is if your numbers constantly go up after max level, which runs opposite to the design of this game, as well as some hilariously ignorant arguments about gaming in general (“good games don’t thrive off of just satisfying gameplay” might be the stupidest thing I’ve read on this forum ever). Thankfully, that’s not what this thread is about.
Sorry for getting off topic, Lance.
people who defend level 80 lategame arent 80
Hi. Level 80 for two weeks here. Game’s fine, deal with it.
Here is my opinion:
I haven’t been playing as much lately due to quite a lot of things going on. I check these forums every day to see if there have been any updates but I’m always disappointed. Every update is ALWAYS lacking any fixes to the number of broken classes or events. Elementalists are still near unplayable (same for necros). But if that wasn’t bad enough, coupled with not hearing a word about it since release, we have Anet only “fixing” things that either don’t require any attention until these HUGE problems are fixed or they are over-reacting to these very small problems and destroying some part of the game (speed runs = super nerf to rewards and boost in “challenge”). I get the feeling that Anet REALLY loves GW2, but in a bad way. They seem to have stopped caring what makes a game fun and what their player base wants just so they keep it in line with what they wanted, even though that is just pissing off a LARGE chunk of players.
I love GW2 but I wish I hadn’t ever played it as it has ruined every other MMO out there for me. For now I’ll stick to Torchlight 2 until, at the very LEAST, the elementalist is fixed.
What makes a game fun for you makes it terrible for a lot of us, and the WoWites are by no stretch of the imagination a majority of GW2’s players.
We don’t want to see GW2 turn into the very game it was intended to defy the existing conventions of, because it would be a spit in the face to the majority of the game’s players. Thankfully, ANet knows this.
Sounds like a bug, whenever I’ve blocked someone, I’ve gotten no mail, whispers, and didn’t see them again in map chat.
I’d fill out a bug report if they’re still showing up after you blocked them.
SHMWhen 10 fanboys jump on a post that brings up a legitimate issue.
It’s not a legitimate issue if it completely changes a core aspect of the gameplay that a majority of the game’s players bought the game for and enjoy.

Alright, so if you’re not complaining that there’s “nothing to do”… then you’re complaining that you’re not automatically notified when you’re in Orr and some world boss halfway across Tyria’s about to pop?
The biggest let down for me is the lack of any structure to playing classes.
Oh man, you could have saved yourself a nice wad of cash and skipped this game entirely if you had read the article about combat on the main GW2 site three years ago.

Sorry, I have a hard time being nice to people that would have the audacity to insist that ANet should do a complete 180 on the philosophy of this game, ideas set in place years ago, solely to appease a minority who wants to play Microsoft Excel with fantasy graphics.
This really isn’t directed at your post, Lance, as you haven’t said anything as ridiculous as “give us gear treadmills and bring back the trinity” like some of these other tools have.
But all the same, what you have done is blasted through several hundred hours of content significantly faster than what could be considered healthy and are (hilariously) wondering why there’s nothing left to do. So really, the only answer anyone can give you is just wait and hold Colin Johanson on his word that more content will be available in this game for free over time than what you’d get in a sub-fee MMO. Then you can speed through that stuff, binge-playing 9+ hours a day like you did with the core game, and maybe even crack a joke about how you’re a “fairly casual player” afterwards as well.
And Dgenerate, sorry you didn’t like the game. But hey, pandaland’s just around the corner, so you can go get your “numbers going up” rocks off there instead of insisting that this game should be just like that.

All the complaints of that nature popping up here are from idiots who walked into this game thinking it would be WoW 2. I don’t feel any sympathy for those kids whatsoever.
Ah so they should have expected less.
They should have expected satisfying gameplay. Instead, they skip over that, because they don’t give a crap about gameplay, instead going “hurr durr this game’s bad because teh epic l00tz i get don’t make me OP and the only way to justify my otherwise meaningless existence is if my stats increase forever”.
They didn’t care if you stopped playing for half a year, they got your 60 bucks already, if you’re bored come back when they have another expansion.
THIS.
I mean, seriously people, ArenaNet have said God only knows how many times that they expect some players to eat up content and leave until there’s new stuff to do.
Posted by: DusK.3849
Killing world bosses and completing dungeons aren’t doing the job of making players feel the “sense of accomplishment” either. Shouldn’t be hard to see that with all the complaints popping up here.

CikThats funny. Skill. Hmmm…I’ll start this video about there. . .about skill. . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk-8Iph0PdU&feature=player_detailpage#t=253s
Holy crap, that is some of the most ignorant swill I’ve ever had the displeasure of listening to. Never show that guy an FPS game, his head would probably explode when he finds out there’s no way you can grind for an aimbot.
Every fifth step? It takes the rest of us about 10 or so minutes to cross a map. What race are you playing, Super-Jotun?

So you are saying that he’s not a casual player. Are you saying that this game is not for hardcore players and caters to ultra-casual players? I think at this point we can fairly say that this game, is truly revolutionary in the sense that it purposely gives you less content, replay-ability, or sense of accomplishment than any MMO on the market.
It’s kinda sad huh?
I give this game one month before we see a massive drop in the player-base.
Uh, you don’t have to be an “ultra-casual” to still have a crapton of stuff to do in this game. Dunno where you got that idea. Same with the whole “less content” bit, considering it’s kind of a proven point that this game is less than a month old but has hundreds of hours of content.
Oh, and normal gamers, as in, gamers that don’t need high numbers to overcompensate for other… uh… we’ll say shortcomings, get a sense of accomplishment from the gameplay itself. Insisting that an MMORPG can’t provide a sense of accomplishment other than “yay, my numbers are going up” is daft.
Let me stand out. Let me be stronger to others for defeating STRONGER content. ArenaNet… let me be rewarded.
You’re asking them to change a core concept that was decided during the development of the game, something we’ve known about for a long time:
Colin Johanson
Deal with it. You’re rewarded with cosmetic gear that allows you to stand out. If that’s not enough, this game isn’t for you; you want a carrot chase, and that runs antithetical to the game’s philosophy.

I’m a fairly casual player
Knew this was a lie when you continued
and have already completed my story, leveled one craft to 400 and have gotten 100% map completion.
This requires several hundred hours of gameplay, at least 250 but likely over 300, so given that the game’s only been out for 27 days, getting to where you are now would require over 9 hours per day, or three times as much as the average MMO player spends on an MMO (Daedalus Project). That’s far from casual.
There are just not enough calls for action in the endgame.
When playing through, the next steps were logical, you progress from one heart or DE to the next until you’ve enjoyed that content (or outleveled it) and moved on. The whole while you actively kept an eye out for those “epic DEs” that meant something really cool and rewarding was about to happen.
However, once you hit 80, the gameplay experience drastically takes a turn for the worst.
First, there’s no next logical step to follow when attempting to find where the action’s at. What I would expect to be rewarding end game content would be any of the epic dynamic events on Orr (Cathedrals come to mind), any of the Dragon events (Jormag, The Shatterer, Tequatl) or any of the explorable dungeon runs.
The action’s all over the place. You can’t go anywhere without some nearby event telling you what’s up.
Second, the cost to navigate the map is astronomical when the destination isn’t yet known. It’s easy to validate the cost of waypoints at 80 when the user knows where they are going, but when we’re not really sure what’s going on across the map, it’s easy to drop 10s and get nothing in return.
So stop being anti-social and ask in /map what’s going on.
And then there’s the issue with LFG and dungeons. I’ve read a few topics on the subject (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/Dungeon-Finder-Sorely-Needed/first#post203347 seems to be the most responded one by ANet), and all I can say is this: I am a User Experience developer and if there is one thing I’ve learned in my career it is that you simply cannot force a user to use a tool, regardless of how well thought out you think it is; simply put, it either works or it doesn’t. Right now, the LFG tool DOES NOT WORK for what the audience wants it to do. We want something that connects us to content.
I can agree with you there, an LFG system would be great.
But aside from all of that, you’ve failed to mention how endgame is a “boring standstill.” I mean, you just blasted through the content about three times as fast as moderately dedicated players. Considering that the game launched with several hundred hours of stuff to do, what more could you want?
(edited by DusK.3849)
I’m personally loving the balance struck with the game’s current combat system.
Funny thing about this whole “zomg all teh servers will be dead” stuff that people keep spouting is that ArenaNet knew full well with their sub-fee-less model that there would be players who will play it off and on like you do. Imo, it’s one of the things that makes it great; you don’t have to worry about getting your sub’s worth because there is no sub (mainly because it’s not needed).
Enjoy your time off. Tyria will be waiting for you when you feel like comin’ back.
The guild wars took place in1013AE and ended in 1070AE between Orr Kryta and Ascalon . They also indirectly led to the cares rise to power which is where GW1 began.
Good summary. For anyone interested in learning why the game is called what it’s called: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Guild_Wars
http://www.tentonhammer.com/image/view/86971/_original
All of that is a big empty void. Okay.
Some people find enjoyment in the game itself, not the carrot at the end of the road.
And the rest complain on the forums about how there’s no gear treadmill after 80 in this game.
So wait, I must have missed it, there’s apperantly a big deal going around about how you can’t make money off GW2 content?
Isn’t that kind of implied for just about anything?
You’re forgetting that self-entitled children aren’t capable of this thing called “rational thought.”
Hell, most of the remixes I do take significantly more skill and talent than what these little basement dwellers think they should be able to make money for, and I wouldn’t dare insist that I should be paid, because what I do is a labor of love and done out of respect for video game music composers. Videos regarding a video game really should be no different.
Sorry, bro, but if you bought this game thinking there would be some gear treadmill at the end, you bought the wrong game. We’ve known for a long, long time that crap wouldn’t be in this game.
I’d suggest learning about what you’re buying next time, because what you did is a lot like buying Tekken 6 and expecting a 2D fighter, or Modern Warfare 3 thinking it would be an arena shooter. Not all MMO’s are WoW ripoffs, despite how many try to be.
However, if 35 pounds is nothing to you, then why complain about your purchase? If it is throw away money and you aren’t having fun, move on?
Oh, snap. An excellent point here.
I kinda wish a lot of people would do this, especially considering those people who think a $60 setback isn’t worth researching the product, but they’re perfectly fine paying a bunch of shareholders $180 a year to be in the cool panda club.
Type /age in your chat, take a screenshot, and post it here. Then we’ll talk about how it’s “not” addictive.
:-P
Can’t be doin’ that. It would prove that a $60 game has hundreds of hours of content. These haters don’t want to paint GW2 in that kind of positive light. XD
There are no hard dungeons just dumb players.
Can’t say the first part is 100% true, as the dungeons are made to be hard, but the second part of this sentence is overwhelmingly obvious as of late.
Seriously, the lack of the “holy trinity” is a concept we all knew about three freakin’ years ago, and a cornerstone for this game. Asking to bring it back is nothing short of daft.
Bug fixing can take a while. There are plenty of fixes slated for the 9/24 update that were reported a couple of weeks ago. Testing generally isn’t just “Hey, here’s a bug, let’s just skim through the code and find out what the problem is.” Too many variables for that. It’s usually a long process of trial and error, not only to see if the bug has been fixed, but also to make sure new ones weren’t created in the process.
If you don’t like it stop coming back.
Please take your own advice.
I thought Timberline has lots of personality. It was this sort of spring-ish mix between high mountains and lowlands, a lot of beautiful, yet fitting opposites in atmosphere that come together in a truly artistic way. The dwarven ruins in particular will tug at the heartstrings of players who remember escorting Ascalonian refugees across the Shiverpeaks in the first game.
It could have a meta event, yeah, I’m always down for some additional big meta events, but as it stands, I actually quite like the zone.
That guys wouldn’t know a good game if it smacked him in the face. 4chan breeds nothing but idiots. The collective IQ over there is less than my shoe size.
I want to put eight-way run and weapons in Street Fighter IV.
See how stupid that sounds? Nobody in their right mind would suggest something like that. And yet, it’s not different than what some people on these forums are complaining about or suggesting should be done, i.e., putting that boring trinity into the game.
The faction armor sets are rare…..
Ah, yes, you’re right. I recalled someone before saying T3 culturals were exotics, and I compared stats.
Still, the difference is extremely small. You’d have to be terribad to think that exotics are a “baseline”.
Nah hes talking out of the wrong hole.
I have feeling hes not even 80 yet.
You’d be wrong there. Vigil exotic armor’s 8g 88s, I’d imagine it’s the same for all faction armor.
I know it’s asking a lot of you, but please educate yourself before spewing yourself.
I have a feeling that there will never be true gear progression like most PVE centered games
Most of us had that feeling nearly a year ago.
Considering that they’re such so that people can play with their friends, I’d assume they’re going to be free until guesting goes live.
For most people complaining, it’s the core mechanics/gameplay
True so far, until
that is lacking
This is where most players wouldn’t agree with you. This is where you prove that you knew nothing about this game before picking it up, instead opting to assume that it would be exactly like every other MMO before it since WoW.
Gw2 has failed to be “revolutionary”.
To you.
All of them. Every profession is viable for dungeons to the point where if you had five of the same profession (once again, any profession), you could finish it. This system was created to get rid of that “we need x kind of guy before we can do the dungeon” stuff that pervades other MMO’s.
The only prerequisite for clearing a dungeon is that the players be skilled. Play whatever you feel like playing. You’ll fit into any dungeon group if you have the skill.
I’d suggest reading some articles on the site and the blog regarding professions, combat, and dungeons for more in-depth info.
I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest it’s because you’re doing DE’s that are well below your actual level. Might be something common for people having problems, idk.
That’s not it; I finished the norn starting area yesterday as an 80 and got about 250 karma per event.
4 karma? That seriously sounds like the bug at work.
I tend to play one character, I’m not a big fan of alts.
Oh, you too? /highfive
Yeah, this game is pretty great for that. And great for altoholics.
This is why people play RTS and FPS games for years without any reward other than self-improvement.
“Blashpemy! The only reward that can exist in a game is your numbers going up!”
Said no intelligent person ever.
Colin Johanson said in another thread there would be a few blog posts next month talking about future content. he also said that their goal is to give us more for free than a sub-fee MMO would.
You said it yourself; over 250 hours put in. You got your $60 worth. You plowed through way faster than most players and put in what is easily a very unhealthy amount of time. And no, 6 hours a day is not “comparatively short to the average MMO player”. That’s pretty much no social life status if you have a job. You know what else it is? A lie. The game release 26 days ago if you count the headstart, and you’ve played for over 250 hours. That calculates to between 9 and 10 hours per day.
Content isn’t limitless. ANet’s going to make more though. For now, I guess, shelf the game and wait. I know it might be hard; you’ve played the game for at least 9 hours a day on average, after all, but I’m sure that you’ll find something to do with your time while you wait for ArenaNet to give you more content to speed through five times faster than most people.
