You also see a lot of projectiles homing in on you when the creature that fired them is facing over 90 degrees away from you, in this supposed skill based game where learning to play triumphs gear.
You do know that there are skills that bounce back or nullify those projectiles, right? You do know that, during a dodge, you’re invulnerable for a certain amount of time, right?
I have a feeling you don’t know this. Anyone who does wouldn’t be complaining about bosses doing “too much damage”, because they wouldn’t be getting hit by the attacks that do “too much damage”.
Seriously, feel free to post your main profession. I’ll help you out. I’ll point out what skills you should be using to stop getting two-shotted.
@RebelYell – “I know how field works. Fields don’t make champions not two-shot you.”
Actually, smoke and dark fields do… Sorry to burst your bubble =)
Well done, sir!
I do hold out hope that perhaps the game can recover and arenanet can add some real depth to the end game. Not this end game starts at level 1 silliness.
“Oh boy, it would be so cool if ArenaNet changed their entire philosophy on this game so I could enjoy it! Even if it means it would be a kick in the face for the people who were informed consumers and knew what they were buying.”
OP, nothing’s wrong with taking off from the game. You had fun. That’s really all that matters. Keep an eye on the GW2 site, though. From what I gather, they’re gonna announce some new content soon-ish.
I know how field works. Fields don’t make champions not two-shot you.
Playing the game right does, though.
Bring the same gear as everyone else to PVP and prove you know how to fight. Nothing wrong with that.
But Porky, if I played longer, I should be able to beat people that are better than me!
I can’t believe people would actually say that kind of stuff. It’s actually pretty funny.
Im more reward centered, a carrot on a stick player.
and there is nothing wrong with that at all….
While true, there is something wrong with wanting to completely alter a game that was made from the ground up to cater to a demographic whose idea of a good game runs opposite to that mindset.
It’d be a lot like going to the Street Fighter forums on Capcom-Unity and going “This game sucks because it’s not 3D, and I’m more of a 3D fighter player, so you should rebuild the game to cater to what I want instead of yada yada”.
I can’t tell you what I want out of my “end-game” experience, because the very idea of “end-game” is terrible and I’m glad to see it done away with in this genre. This idea that everything post-max level in an MMORPG should be some endless stat growth is ridiculous. Gameplay should never take a backseat to numbers.
Good gameplay, on the other hand, is what I want out of any game I buy. I got it with GW2. Whether or not it holds my interest after I “finish” it is irrelevant. No first-person shooter has an “end-game”. No fighter has an “end-game”. This viewpoint that an MMORPG needs to have some constant carrot chase to be enjoyable is absurd.
That’s one of the very “crazy” ideas that ArenaNet set out to prove with GW2.
I got no increased jump height or run speed every time I finished a game of Sonic the Hedgehog. I got no bonus to weapon damage after playing 10 or so games of Unreal Tournament. Fei Long’s Shienkyaku didn’t get more powerful every time I used it. Hell, I didn’t even get to play at all after the conclusion of most RPGs. But what I did get was fun gameplay. And I got that with GW2. And really, that’s all any reasonable gamer wants from a game.
Maybe you should read the second sentence of my statement. The trailer was an obvious foreshadowing. Also, you are using the context of his statement to support your post when in fact, it does not. They do not CONSIDER them direct competition because of the different transaction model, but that does not mean it is not competing with it. Releasing a game within a genre automatically makes you compete with any other title within that genre. The current GW2 MT model and non-subscription model is genius because no game is going to compete with WoW for a subscription (since most players will not subscribe to more than one game), especially with MOP on the horizon of GW2’s release. It would be suicide if they decided on a subscription model and not obtaining the many players they did by not having one. For example: most players would not even have purchased the box if there was a subscription model as opposed to getting the game into many more homes by not having that stipulation.
You should look up the definition of the word foreshadowing.
You’re also forgetting the fact that ANet didn’t go with the subscription model not because “no game is going to compete with WoW for a subscription”, they went with B2P because a subscription fee pays for absolutely nothing. WoW made over double in box sales alone what it cost to maintain the game during the same time frame. A subscription fee for an MMO in this day and age is, quite literally, free money going straight to the execs and shareholders.
You’re trading reality for speculation. A key designer of this game flat-out states, well before release, that they don’t intend to compete with WoW. And yet, you think your viewpoint on a trailer somehow erases all of that.
Also, my whole point is not to bash casuals. I just believe there should be sufficient amount of reward for every type of player. Casual and hardcore included. Currently, the reward system and structure seems very casual oriented and does not cater to those not interested in cosmetics.
And thus, you feel that people who are “hardcore” should get a stat advantage over those that aren’t. That’s really what this boils down to, and guess what? That contradicts the philosophy this game was built on. Deal with it, because it’s not going to change. Altering the game in that way would be a slap in the face to all those who bought the game for what it is.
Another thing, if it may seem like I am using casual as an insult—I very may be in certain situations. I think way too many time casuals continuously stomp their feet on forums or wherever and get their way. When, in fact, they do not even know what THEY want due to extreme inexperience. A perfect example of this would be combat log discussions on the SWTOR forums.
And some guy with a short man complex stomping his feet on the forums going on about how some people deserve to have better stats than someone else just because they play more than any person reasonably should is somehow different?
/shrug… I played a ton of FPS games years ago like Unreal Tournament with no tracking of progress and had a blast.
No. You didn’t have fun. Your numbers didn’t go up, so there was no fun to be had.
Alright, I couldn’t type that with a straight face. Seriously, good example of how a game can stand on its own solely by providing fun core gameplay.
ArtTheir goal, despite what you believe/use to support your post, is to compete with WoW.
I’m sure you have a source for this (LOL you don’t, we both know it). Maybe one that contradicts what Colin Johanson says about not considering WoW direct competition in this video.
And funny, you throwing “casual” around like an insult. Especially considering that, with most games, anything that would allow a player of lesser skill to beat a player of greater skill (such as better gear) is considered the “casual” element of said game.
Colin Johanson hinted at a blog post in the next month or two, and said that they plan to release more content for free than you’d see in a sub-fee MMORPG.
I play a Guardian. Greatsword/Staff, I love both. Greatsword is good for single-target combat, but amazing for multi-target combat, and their pull skill is one of the strongest control skills easily. Yank five guys next to you, put down your symbol, bust out three strikes from auto-attack at 1, and smack Whirling Wrath while someone else rains AoE over it all, and get a big smile on your face as you watch the corpses of even strong enemies fall down next to you.
As far as staff, what we lack in range, we make up for in multi-target combat. The wave hits up to five enemies, does some decent damage, but it’s a back seat to our support and control abilities. You’d be shocked how much damage a party can do loaded up on might, and the orb has some pretty good healing/damage when firing it into a big melee fight and detonating it.
I like all of this. I like being a guy who mows down enemies at one moment, then being the guy that helps my team mow down enemies the next.
There is a large number of players that simply DO NOT care about armor dyes, titles, achievements and rare skins.
Or gameplay. But, that leaves pretty much nothing other than higher numbers. So… no. No higher numbers for you.
Convenience, mainly.
… proving once again how broken this game is. If there were more endgame, like that other game, you would never leave your keyboard for something as trivial as dinner. You would die in front of your monitor as a starved skeleton. GW2 was so clearly unfinished and rushed out of the gate , that players are leaving in droves every single day, sometimes longer than 20 minutes, to eat meals. And you fyanbyoise may may pretend everything is ok, but I’ll laugh last when the servers are empty at 6:00 pm because people are away at their tables eating food.
This made me laugh harder than anything today. Well done.
It’s probably happening at midnight PDT.
KalocinThey need room for expansions….Bwahaha.
Oh man. Well, I know what I want for Christmas now.
I would buy a Logan figure in a heartbeat. Rytlock needs someone to argue with.
ANet said a while ago that being “evil” won’t be a possibility. They want their players to be heroes. Seems to work out better for most people that way.
My girlfriend doesn’t like it a whole lot either, but then again, she was the type to just do the Dark Brotherhood line in Skyrim and just call it quits afterward because she “did everything she wanted to do.”
Right now if you aren’t a fan of the 4 maps and the 1 mode available… well then sPvP is literally just not for you. Imagine if a MP FPS game launched with 4 maps/arenas and 1 mode…
A very good point, actually. Hell, a lot of people were upset that BF3 didn’t launch with double-digits.
Here’s hoping they give us more sPvP maps sooner rather than later. I can’t imagine they’re too hard to develop.
It’s really mainly in the forums. Once you get into the game you rarely see much of the trolling that happens here.
Truth. Seriously, just ask in map chat if everyone’s enjoying the game, and you’ll see massive amounts of praise for GW2 and ANet.
I’ve done it several times for S’s and G’s. It’s amazing how stark the difference is in attitude between the game and its forum.
One day shy of a month in playing every day. Game still hasn’t lost its sparkle.
10/10, would play again.
Razer Nostromo + Razer Naga = I practically play this game like an FPS. A key to toggle mouselook would be a dream come true.
FishNo announcement from Anet regarding the status of the game.
The reason given in the traits article written up by Jon Peters:
“We realized that an important part of building a character is some sense of permanence. With this new system, you are flexible enough to change if you really want to, but you should still feel like the choices you made matter while you are out adventuring or slogging your way through a dungeon.”

Guardian, 80 for the past couple of weeks, 9/10.
I’ll have to check this out. I don’t normally see the sky in this game, especially in Lion’s Arch due to all the tall structures, but those stars should definitely be there. That doesn’t seem like something they’d take out.

I posted this in another thread a while back, but I’ll reiterate here: Dungeons are hard, and because of this, an LFG tool along the lines of other MMO’s is very likely to put you in a group of people that really know know how to play the game well enough to make a dungeon run go smoothly. I think if such a tool were implemented, it should be done as such with a constant reminder that your dungeon run is likely to go a lot less smoothly than playing with a team of good players that you’re used to playing with.
I definitely agree with the idea of giving experience and event participation for doing support. Control should give you participation as well, though afaik, it already does.
If you’re losing interest, feel free to take a break until they add more content, which they have said they will (more than what you’d get in a sub-fee MMO, according to Colin).
Tyria will be there waiting for you when you decide to come back.
And where did ANet say this?
Quite a few times over the game’s development for the past three or so years.
Ah, the BF3 forums, where all the nostalgia-glasses-toting trogs laugh about how every single MW game is a carbon copy of the last with better graphics, then cry because BF3 isn’t just BF2 with better graphics. And don’t even get me started about the self-entitled kiddies who think paying for expansions is somehow a new thing to PC gaming. Those threads always make me lol.
Anyway, getting off topic. The hostility normally comes from people asking for changes that run opposite to the core foundations ArenaNet set for this game, the ideas this game brought to the table and have been largely successful. It scares them. It’s different, and people don’t like different.
Many weren’t even expecting different; they picked up this game thinking “Oh, it’s an MMO, and every MMO made recently has basically been WoW with a different story and stuff, so I’ll grab this game and get my holy trinity and gear treadmill on. Numbers, here I come!” and then find out that it’s nothing like WoW. So they come here complaining about the game, and the suggestions they give to “fix” it run opposite to the reasons this game was made, the reasons most of us bought it.
What I’m saying is, imagine how much whining there would be if ANet found a good way to make those dungeons impossible to farm effectively.
I would love it.
I keep ending up in LA overflows. Clearly, the game’s dying.
If you walked into Street Fighter IV’s forum and blathered on about how much the game sucks because it’s nothing like Tekken 6, you’d rightfully be met with hostility.
People are doing pretty much exactly that on these boards. Relevant criticisms take a back-seat to uninformed consumers whining about wanting this game to be a carbon copy of either WoW or GW1.
This is a tricky situation. On one hand, this seems like a good idea, as it will help you find PUGs easier. On the other hand, the dungeons, particularly explorables, are hard, and require a good group that knows cooperative play well to get through without massive repair bills and numerous other frustrations.
So such a system would, of course, lead into groups where people think the tank/heal/dps system still exists, or groups where nobody does any support and control and just zerg/deathruns all day (and then they can come to the forums and blame the game for their shortcomings as they have been for the past month XD).
If an LFG system were implemented, it should be implemented with a clear and constant reminder than the possibility of you landing in a really bad group is there.
CeriseDungeons right now are way too easy to farm, meaning “prestige” armor from dungeons isn’t really an indication that you did something really challenging, since most people who have them just did an easy farm route over and over.
ArenaNet took some steps to curb this recently. Now people are flooding the forums complaining about it. XD
Funny, I played GW1 for over 7 years, and I hardly spent any time at all doing PvP. Guess no one informed me GW1 was a PvP focused game. =/
Ditto here, though I played off and on. Long stints, long breaks. I imagine I’ll be doing the same with this game.
Guild are within their right to have whatever rules and guidelines they want. If you think the rules are stupid and you don’t want to follow them, then that guild probably isn’t for you.
What this guy said. The game allows for a massive amount of flexibility regarding the guidelines guilds set for themselves and the expectations players set for themselves.
Pretty sure this is already happening regarding DE’s. Every dynamic event I’ve done so far in low-level areas (I’ve been spending the last few days working my way through the norn areas with my 80) has rewarded me with nearly as much karma, experience, and coin as a level 80 area.
I’ve also frequently gotten drops that are near or at my level (80), including rares. Not only this, but an increased rate of dye drops (Oh, btw, did you guys know that dye drops a lot more if the level you’re in is way lower than your character level?) adds an additional reason to play in these areas aside from the other motivations for doing so (map completion, DE’s, etc).
I guess TL;DR: They’re already doing this.
Wolfgreyi still believe PvP is the main focus.
There are no dynamic events, skill challenges, hearts, or other similar content in PvP unless you count WvW as strictly PvP, and even ANet doesn’t do that. There are 26 massive PvE explorable zones, compared to 4 sPvP maps, all one gametype, and 4 maps for WvW, three of which have the same terrain.
PvP is not the main focus of the game itself. Just because you choose to make it your main focus (and that’s fine, there’s nothing wrong with that at all) doesn’t mean ANet does.
Ah, I wasn’t aware that you couldn’t put runes in rare equi- wait a minute.
It must not be something that gives a time-rich player a power advantage over other players.
This is a concept that’s going over a lot of peoples’ heads.
I definitely agree.
Will ArenaNet be allowing any sort of add ons in the future? I would love to see some sort of damage meter addition in the future.
Dear God, no.
Its cool bro, I wasnt that hardcore of a player to play Guildwars at level 20 with level 18 gear
That’s a terrible analogy. Something more accurate would be along the lines of playing GW1 as a 20 with max-level gear that’s not inscripted.
The bottom line is that 11% won’t save you if you’re garbage at the game. It’s not some sort of “baseline” as you keep insisting. Give me a good player in whites, blues, or greens over some scrub deathrunner in exotics any day.
I like that people say stuff like that in chat. It lets me know what groups I should avoid.
I believe rizzy is right when he said the difference comes out to roughly 20%
Not a big fan of math? That’s fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s wrong and the actual difference is about half of what he says it is.
Base Damage differential is in the 100s, not to mention adding up all +1% extra crit damage from exotic berserker set, the number differential is significant.
Don’t believe me? try it out for yourself.
That’s an 11% difference. Negligible in this game.
See, you are the reason no real conversation or debate can go on in the forums. Why did you say “WoWites”? I have NEVER played WoW and I never intend to. And who is “we”? It most certainly is not the majority of players (at least those that are on the forums) as is obvious. I’m pretty sure at the end I mentioned that I love GW2 and that it ruined other MMOs for me. Now, to be fair, maybe I didn’t make it clear. I find GW2 to be a lot of fun WHEN WORKING CORRECTLY. But I don’t want to play this game when I can’t play as my favorite class and survive in end game content. Just head on over to the elementalist forums and take a look.
And I’m sure they’ll get on that. Balancing’s usually a never-ending battle in MMORPGs, and I expect this game to be no different.
And why the hell is everyone so tied up in “defying the existing conventions”? What is so great about defying conventions if it just makes it less fun?
Fun is subjective. Where a lack of tank/heal/dps combat that teeters on the boundary between traditional RPG and ARPG gameplay, no gear treadmill or carrot-chase post-80, and a presence of relevant 1-80 content than can be enjoyed even while max level might not appeal to many, it will definitely appeal to others. ANet made a game that’s different from other MMORPGs to cater to the players that found other MMORPGs crap for many of the reasons that people on these boards insist those other MMORPGs were good and should be put into GW2.
I’m glad they are breaking the mold in a lot of ways. It has truly enlightened me on what can be accomplished if a company takes a risk. But there are conventions for a reason. Everyone always throws that word around like it is bad. To be a convention means that a lot of people like it (maybe even the VAST majority)… you know what… I don’t actually want to keep defending myself to you.
The conventions are there only because that’s what x game did. That’s the only reason they exist. Fortunately, ANet’s a company that realized that those conventions are boring for a lot of players.
The next time you want to attack someone else please provide points. Your post is just an attack on me that bears no weight because you only made a lot of claims with no premises. I can’t even call that an invalid argument because there is no argument.
You want an argument? Here it is: An MMO can be different, just as a fighter can be different, just as a shooter can be different, just as a racer can be different. Whether that makes it better or worse, when ideas are executed correctly (and in the case of GW2, they by and large were), is entirely subjective. Things like the stuff I mentioned in my first paragraph; many will find that stuff good, many (like me) find it boring as hell. Just because someone has a personal preference and the game suits another doesn’t mean “ah mai gawd game’s broken”.
