My advice is always for people to level and play a thief at 80. There are certain very OP things (like perma stealthing), but most of what they do comes down to timing, and if you are familiar with it, you can counter it fairly well, now that necro condi burst is so high.

Yep. Once you’ve played as a Thief, you’ll realize that a lot of advices you’ve gotten in the past on how to deal with one as a Necro are horrible. They’re usually from Necros who are not familiar with Thieves or Thieves who are not familiar with Necros. And it’s hard to weed out good advice from bad advice unless you’ve played both.

I have killed some thieves with Signet of Spite and Blood is Power alone.

This is virtually imposible, but cool story

If the thief uses stealth while they are nearby, Go into death shroud and use Life Transfer. This will do a lot of damage and it may down the thief.

Not even with 11K hit points and zero toughness, another cool story,

And even with no armor or traits specced for anything into toughness.. I have never been hit for more than 6k against a thief (And I have fought a lot of thieves)

I been hit countless times for 9k wearing full rabids gear with ascended trinkets, another cool story,

Its not that hard to not let a thief backstab you as a necromancer

Backstab is way too easy to connect and nearly impossible to avoid against a good thief, if fact if you don’t even pay attention you have 75% to connect it,

Saying such things shows me that you never ever played a thief,

Sorry if i’m being mean but you are just misleading people saying that thieves are easy to kill as a necromancer,

It took me a lot of effort to learn how to counter and if some guy has been defeated countless times against them is ok, and it’s not he’s fault is because the balance is kittened up,

And most thieves are not that glassy, they wear valkyries and cavalier many times loosing just a little bit of damage and gaining a lot of survivability,

EDIT: As I said im talking about WvW Spvp is another story and thieves are 0k if not under powered,

And sorry, but the statement of “I’ve never be defeated by a thief” is just another “cool story”

EDIT: FYI 4 marks can be dodged at once, it doesn’t matter how many you put at your feets,

Some advices are hilarious,

I’ll assume you are a condicion necro,

a) In WvW a fleeing target is a easy target for a thief, specially a necromancer, your best bet is to stand your ground and try to kill it, dont give your back and don’t try to run away,

b) Even with rabid gear if you can’t avoid the first backstab the game is over, a thief can hit you for 7k easily and there’s no way back from there, sadly backstab is really easy to connect,

b) Don’t waste your marks, don’t drop marks at your feets, marks can be dodged and some of them have high cooldowns, drop them all at the same time on the shadow refuge, reaper’s mark will likely push him out of it, doom + spectral wall + tainted shackles will do the rest,

c) At this point the thief is dead or he’s running away and likely he’s not going back, he will find an easier target,

DONT drop marks at your feets, marks can be dodged and some of them have high cooldowns,

On Spvp this build is just stupid, the limitation on equipment and the game mode put thieves in a very bad spot,

Nevertheless they are blatantly OP on WvW during small skirmishes, even when a terror necro with burning is a good 1V1 duelist, the thief has the edge,

This is some of the things i did yesterday in tpvp (3 hours):
- won ALL the 1v1s against all the classes in game
- won a 2v1 against warrior and ranger
- won a 2v1 against thief and mesmer
- won a 2v1 against mesmer and engi
- hold a point for almost a minute in a 3v1
(in two of the three 2v1 i won a guy from my team came for help at the end of the fight when i already downed one of the 2 guys, helped me for the stomp)

Stop comparing to Engis. We are absolutely different classes. The problem isn’t Dhuumfire alone, it always has been dhuumfire + fears + huge condi output.

explain the huge condition output please, i want to build that class,

5 seconds of burning, (outside Spvp) with bleed (stacking slow as hell) and a little bit of poison, and fear each 12 seconds at best case,

Spectral wall and corrupt boon, both with high cooldowns, spectral wall is way too easy to avoid and corrupt boon does not assure that you will apply fear,

Now you have zero stun breakers, (if you equip epidemic), you have almost zero LF regeneration, you loose 100 condition damage, and your staff now is much less reliable,

And you got 1 major trait and three minor traits completly useless on spite, (and chill of death is not that good),

On top of LF overflow, no blocks, no protection, no vigor and no stability and being the first target in all fights I would not say that your condition output is that high, in fact is pretty close to zero,

Yet we get it at grandmaster… in a tree that has nothing to do with dots. And it caused us to loose our main and only source of heavy/spike mitigation and in general the most accesible mitigation mechanic. And our terror got nerfed too just for laughs. Then our unbockable marks got nerfed too… also just for the hell of it. Oh yeah even spectral walk and armor got nerfed.
And after all that fire was nerfed to crap. 2 seconds fire on 10 second cd? As grandmaster? Wtkittend a sad joke is that?

I don’t really care “that much” about lore, I do care about balance,

I bought gw2 due necromancer and minions, I played a minion mancer on Diablo 2 and when I saw the gw2 minions it was like a kick in the face,

I can live without minions i said to myself, (I don’t want a chicken, a baloon and two rats),

I used to run fractals with my necro, and I did it up to level 36 but as more and more people started to run fractals people becomes more “picky” and I got kicked several times, (so i did a warrior, i forgot to say that I have a warrior too),

When I started to play WvW thieves were a nightmare, so i did a thief and I learned how to counter, nowdays they are still a pain in the kitten and even a decent thief are able to kill me, on the other hand 75% are able to escape from me,

I can live with it, necromancer is not the best duelist,

Then I found a nice group to do Spvp, that’s why I did a ranger, the whole match consisted in hold home against two or three guys and call for help when I do need,

I can live with it, necromancer is not a class to do Spvp, (except to kill guardians, before the corrupt boon nerf, despite the slow movement speed)

Finally I found a group to flip camps and roam on WvW, but my necromancer was too slow to the task, Slowing my group running like a turtle with no movement skills at all except dark path, on top of that I was the first target always, WvW was like Ping Pong wars with me flying around,

So i did a mesmer, because necromancer is not the best class to roam,

Then I started to run dungeons to get some gold to buy skins and my legendary, and guess what? Same story as with fractals,

Once again i was running dungeons with a class I don’t want, my old warrior,

Then I started to farm arah events to get some karma and buy my legendary weapon, but due the bleed cap and my damage was negligible, and bronze rewards started to become more and more common,

I guess I had to live with it, I used my guardian to farm those events,

Funny part is that there’s no legendary weapon suitable to necromancers,

So I ended with a main class, unable to roam, unable to do dungeons and fractals, unable to stay alive against a competent group, weak to be part of a Spvp team, unable to farm PvE events, weak to duel other classes, unable to catch other classes, unable to stay alive, a free kill once downed, etc etc etc

Necromancers should be renamed “bombermancers”, they are only usefull to drop wells and marks on WvW,

The fix that is coming is in consideration of the time that we had to complete it. We are planning to rework some things when we have more time, but felt this would be sufficient for now, considering the first Qualifying tournament is tomorrow.

Why don’t you just remove necromancers from this tournament?

I disagree. With Necro’s high Health pool, they can invest all their gears and items to improve their Power. Also with their Death Shroud mechanic, they really don’t have to worry much about their survivability, thus they can focus more on improving their damage output.

This phrase is hilarious,

a) Necromancer is by far the class with less survivability in this game,

b) A CnD thief would deplete a complete DS pool in matter of seconds, then any decent thief will reset the fight and come back to finish the job against a helpless necromancer,

Necro’s are OP as it is. Here, I have the perfect steps for you…

1. Pull out staff
2. Spam 1 through 5 around you
3. Stand in the middle of your circle of win
4. Go lych form and prema-fear every thing
5. Go on forums, cry about being under-powered
6. Win

Before my grammar horror party starts i’d want to say

a) I’m not a necro fan boy, but the necro is my main

b) I play Spvp (In fact i’m champion hunter (yeah, champion hunter) and i played a lot of tournaments with my necro too) In fact i stopped playing due the hilarious matchmaking system, and because it becomes monotonous

c) I have a guardian // mesmer in full ascended

d) I got a thief // ranger in full exotics

I got no problems to post my pics here

What i’m trying to say is that i’m not fully biased, I played all the games modes, I played almost all classes and in my opinion necromancers are #########

I’m using the same terror build since months, seems that .5 seconds more on doom (when the enemy is way too close to me) and a glowing wall that even a 5 years old child could avoid made me overpowered

When you claim that a backstab damage is way too high people respond “l2p roll a thief and learn how to counter”, so i did

But when people bounce against this glowing wall the response is “okay we’ll nerf it”

You gave me burning when nobody ask for it

You gave me a new DoT condition when nobody ask for it

Now corrupt boon, DS, staff marks and terror damage has been nerfed

Yes, terror damage… do you guys have any idea of how much damage can other classes do?

You didn’t gave us tools to survive

You didn’t gave us tools to avoid enemies be able to escape

Our trait tree still is a mess, is awful, is horrible, is painful, it makes me cry

Our cast times still are atrocious

Some of our skills // traits are useless, some are senseless

a) At this moment i´m using solder instead of knight on my head / chest and leg armor but i think that my critical chanche (44%) is not enough to take full advantage of my critical damage furthermore my survivability is ok,

b) Shall i keep using the superior sigil of fire on my great sword or shall i switch to bloodlust?

c) Shall i switch the superior sigil of force with a superior sigil of accuracy on my pistol?

d) My traits are ok? There´s some way to improve it? I´m missing something?

Right now i´m having a blast with my mesmer, and any input will be much appreciate !

I have been really frustrated at times by being outclassed by other servers. Now I know many FA people will not like me to imply that TC is better lol. But we all know they are good.

I remember one night on FA when TC had our entire borderland and then they set up trebs at the spawn to the northern camp and lobbed rotten cows at us and when ever we came out slaughtered us. I was so angry- raging really.

This week we have TC and JQ. When it is unbalanced I think our idea of success has to become any little thing you can accomplish despite the odds. And we should celebrate the little victories. I think if we can have that mindset instead of constant focus on the fairness of the match it brings the fun back. Sometimes what you see when you are outclassed and loosing is players just becoming hypercritical of the each other and total frustration.

What I was really glad to see yesterday when we lost some hard fought real estate was that the FA commanders really said “good job” to everyone even though we didn’t win the objective. We did as good as we could at the time.

As a JQ player I apologize about this match guys, you need to understand that WvW at this moment is all about numbers, not about skills or coordination,

1. a big zerg already gets countered by smaller groups, capping things behind its back. 2 zergs are far more efficient.

2. Hurray for a lot more stronger keep lords, it will take days to cap something now. Just chain warrior banner rezzes. SM will never get taken again. Banners already are super strong there because the lord of SM has so much health.

3. Less exp for objectives? Nope, wont cut the zerg down. People run in zergs because of safety. They wont mind less exp, they still will get their kill count up ^^.

4. Gems can be bought with gold, it is like 15-20g to transfer now? That really is nothing. So don’t use it as an excuse. Agree some guilds need to go to lower tier servers, we did it and it is great fun. I love to use my utilities again.

5. Siege prices will go up again. People just dumped all their siege now. In a few weeks, golems will go up in price again when this main supply runs out. So that issue will fix itself.

1) A big zerg is countered by another big zerg, maps are way too small and a zerg can respond quickly and be deploy to any point in the map in less than 2 minutes, also camps cannot be flipped immediately,

Come on guys… I bought a new computer and my sister is playing with the old one,

Hd3850, Phenom x3 2.1Ghz, 4GB Ram and she’s playing at minimun in WvW with 35 FPS, the game is not THAT demanding,

Anyway I agree that the CPU usage is above “normal” but is not THAT BAD, i’d love to be able to play play with 90 FPS in the middle of a 70 guys zerg but we all know that is not posible,

There is this thing called the “camera” which can move 360 degrees and it shows you things like that thief that just stealthed about 2-3k yards away who is trying to land that backstab.

There is also this thing called a “wall” that you can stand on and watch people die while you bask in the quasi-safety of your keep. Not only that, there is a great chance the thief won’t be able to hit you from there.

I don’t know if you guys heard of them.

17k is a number I’ve heard attached to 100nades, but I’ve yet rarely heard with BS (like once against someone without armour rare).

Say again? This backstab was done to my warrior with 1500 toughness. I had full health, no conditions like vunerability, or anything. I was just standing outside of my keep watching a few people in the distance. I died in just two hits (C&D and BS).

Thieves, how can I “L2P” if I can’t see almost 20K in damage coming?

You were standing outside the keep. You were too busy watching those few people to scan the other 260 degrees for incoming enemies. Your fault for letting you guard down and standing out in the open.

I believe you are the original thief troll forum warrior I have heard so much about…a unique combination.

You did not address the point the person was making which was about the amount of damage dealt in 2 hits and in instead blamed the person for not being prepared and ready to be attacked by an invisible foe. Further more, your original first two posts on his issue on the first page clearly seem to show a lack of maturity and a clear desire for trolling instead

Actually he did. The thief class is designed to have the highest single target burst (funny story though, it doesnt). There is no issue with the amount of damage he dealt, that same warrior, if fully geared and traited for damage could have done as more or more damage with hundred blades, or killshot, or even axe AUTOATTACK. thats right, warrior axe autoattack does more damage than backstab. pay attention when standing on open ground in wvw.

No, no he didn’t.

The point was that you can be instantly bursted down from 100 to 0 in <0.5 seconds, with nothing that you can do about it. Heck, with the latency that I have, I’d probably be dead even before seeing it on my screen.

Hundred Blades, Killshot (unless casted from stealth), and axe autoattack are all telegraphed moves. Warriors also don’t have an instant 900 range blink.

Edit: You would probably make a better point if you used S/D burst Eles or Shatter Mesmers. On the other hand, they don’t even burst as hard, or as quickly.

They will never understand this, because people who says such things never ever played another class besides a thief,

Once they heard “hundred blades does 26k damage”, “killshot does 16k damage!” so they think “a 14k backstab is ok, furthermore is not AoE!”

They are noobs, they would be useless in any spvp match and all they know to do is the same scripted rotation over and over again, if they fail miserably against a good player their brains switch to phase 2 and “operation i’m a kitten” begins,

And telling people to “avoid open places” in WvW… I don’t know what to think, maybe we are playing diferent games,

Shatter mesmers are not that dangerous, unless you are running with no stun breakers,

Burst eles are the same if not worst, at least you can see them coming but the damage and survivability is ridiculous,

I’m not a good warrior but i’m a decent mesmer and the short answer is “there’s no way to beat a half brained mesmer using a warrior”

a) You can’t lock him down

b) You can’t avoid their damage, (either phantasms or shatter or conditions),

c) Your best bet if you are using a sword and a greatsword is to run as fast as you can, you should be able to escape,

I can’t get excited about future living story updates. So far, we got subterranean vermin, beach crabs and now merchants that have a penchant for ballooning.

There is nothing compelling about killing crabs/moles and talking to merchants.

I loved this game 4 months ago but I have learned to loathe it in a relatively short time period. The ‘living’ story is killing the game for me.

On the current state of the game defend a tower that you KNOW the enemy will take it is useless, because if you kill someone at the end of the battle they will be revived and they will keep taking all your kitten,

On the other hand this will encourage TO NOT ATTACK towers far away from your base, because WvW is a 2 battle with two fronts,

This way the weakest server will not be camped at their spawn,

Do you really need an explanation?

A large group of people, lets say 50 fight against 10 guys in a tower and those 10 guys manage to kill 20 assaulters even if they loose the tower they did manage to delay the enemy to take the next tower,

Now the assaulters needs to regroup at “x” point and wait for the casualties to respawn at the main base and regroup with the rest of the zerg,

This would encourage defend a tower to the bitter end instead of running, and will encourage the assaulters to be more strategic,

In my planet we call this “common sense”,

I know that you may find it confusing at first, but please give it a try,

What bugs me is that blob warfare is so dull.

There currently aren’t any mechanics to encourage large forces to spilt into smaller chunks, and their aren’t any mechanics to discourage overly large armies from getting together in the first place.

My idea was to make towers camps all the bosses within ALOT harder based on the number of people attacking. So the bigger your zerg the harder and longer the boss will be.

Here’s a thought. Why not make player worth less points/exp and towers worth less (much less) the more players that tag it. This will cut the zerg down and you will see more 5 man groups running around.

Block fully-dead revives in hostile territory

Don’t charge gem’s to transfer down. You want balance? then let people filter downward.

Before one could buy siege in TP I was fine if enemy dropped 4 omegas and 8 alphas on a keep and take it. I knew they had used a ton of gold to take the keep and something like that didn’t really happen too often because of the price tag on them.

But now, that golems go for 12s – 20s per one, it makes this meta a too common tactic. Now I keep seeing omega waves after omega waves on our Keeps. Destroying 8 omegas and 16 alphas is pretty regular evening now.

In GW2 down state + everyone can rez + 5 man aoe cap means it’s impossible to kill even 1 player when you are inside a keep defending. Counter rush is pointless. I have fought in many battles where my side rushed a larger zerg downed 1/2 of the zerg in the rush only to have them insta rally on 1 or 2 of our death and then zerg us down.

One laurel by completing either the Daily PvE or Daily PvP achievement category (you can only get 1 laurel from either daily PvE or daily PvP),

Monthly

Ten laurels by completing either the Monthly PvE or Monthly PvP achievement category. (you can only get 1 laurel from either monthly PvE or monthlyPvP),

Achievement Chests

One to ten laurels can be obtained as part of an Achievement Chest reward (earned with achivement points),

Worst part of roaming alone is,

1) Thieves, enginners and elementalists running cheesy builds troling around,

2) Most people will flee from you and not going to fight 1v1 or 2v2, therefore most fights will be uneven to you (1v2 – 1v3 – 2v4 – 3-6) because most people only fight when they are 90% sure they are going to win,

3) Most roamers are thieves using the same kittened build, and most times they will escape from you AND fighting against a thief in a wide open place is boring as hell… you’ll be hitting the air 90% of the time trying to guess where’s the kitten,

Roaming alone is all about burst damage, high mobility and damage avoidance… thief and mesmers are the best suited,

The rest of WvW is being part of the zerg and faceroll AoE,

Nice effort on the video but those players you downed are obviously bad players – pre-selected encounters chosen by you to make your build look good — well, it’s not.

First fight was with a 30% HP thief took about 6K damage before going down so based by that, she had around 19k HP. Downing her while she’s damaged only makes you look bad.
Second against a Ranger who never switched to a melee weapon —- makes you look bad.
3rd a staff Guardian sigh — makes you look worst.
… then I had watched enough since it just keeps getting worst.

And your play style is so generic. You’re not even using S/D skills properly, especially Sword#2 — I’d say, I’ve seen better game play.

Sorry, just being honest here.

If you make a video winning fighting against the following, I’d be your biggest fan;
1) SB + S/D Ranger
2) Scepter/Focus + Hammer Guardian
3) Mace/Shield + GS Warrior
4) D/P + SB Thief
5) Staff + Sword/Focus Mesmer
6) D/D Elementalist

And if you want to make relevant videos, you should transfer server to either one of the top 4. It will also make you a better player after playing against those servers.

I saw this guy saying that the best way to counter a thief as a mesmer is “acting as a clone”, and wish is a d/p thief who claims to be a guardian but he never posted in that part of the forum… so take it easy,

Shatter does not hit that hard as most people think, and it’s extremly easy to avoid, way more easy than a backstab,

Confusion has been nerfed to the ground, mesmers are not good at conditions, engineers and necros are much better,

The inmortal mesmer has been nerfed to the ground, 50% to be more precise,

Phantasm mesmer is a duelist, designed to win any 1v1 encounter, it lose a lot of efectiveness the more players are involved in the fight, in fact it’s a awful build,

Hard to believe you played a mesmer,

We tell the rest “l2p” but the only class we played is a thief, we tell the rest “stop crying” but we are the first ones crying,

I once took 16 stacks of confusion with a few stacks of bleed, and some other stuff. I used two skills and took around 7k damage(just from the confusion I mean)

For what I’ve discussed with support, there’s a problem with how our ISP’s are routing our connections to the GW servers.

There seems to be a hop in dallas thats loosing packets like crazy. This hop is on the way to the GW servers but its not Anet’s. Its not, however, our ISP’s either. This is most likely also the reason why people dont have lag while using a 3rd party “ping preventing”solution, since it probably just proxies the connection through their servers bypassing dalla’s hop.

So you see, this problem falls in a somewhat gray area where ANET is not responsible, our ISP is “technically” not responsible (its not really their server) and we don’t get to play the game we payed for…

Now, even though the ISP is not responsible per se, IT IS their responsibility to properly route our data packages. So what we can do, is call our ISP’s, explain them the situation and see if they can either contact that dalla’s datacenter or route our connections differently.

The problem with this method in Argentina at least, is that our customer support is comprised of little more than trained monkeys, so again, ANET’s help here would be GREATLY appreciated.

tl.dr: There’s a hop in dallas kittening with our connection, we have to call our ISP’s and have them contact that datacenter to get it fixed.

1° Every guy who wrote bs after this guy need to read more and write less, (and stop with boicot ideas… it’s stupid),

2° Why in hell nobody at Anet told us this? This seems to be completly reasonable… much more than “all ISP in latin america are kittened up”,

3° Are you guys at Anet aware of this?

b) Check your VGA… if’s ok

c) Check your CPU… if’s ok

d) Check your PSU… if’s ok

e) Call your ISP… if’s ok

d) Disarm your rig once again with your eyes closed, if’s ok

e) Check everything again, if’s ok

d) Call your ISP… if’s ok then your problem is your ISP

I already lose all hope, obviously they don’t care about this and obviously they are not going to do anything to fix it, they don’t even assume the problem (the very first step to solve a problem),

There’s a bunch of f2p MMO games out there that i can play flawless, PROBLEM IS NOT THE ISP,

A mesmer // thief in full zerker have more “defense” than a necromancer or a warrior in pure soldiers, this game is about damage avoidance, “defense” is not toughness,

It’s actually dumb to ask my ISP anything when there’s only one application that doesn’t work properly

Problem is not my ISP for sure, I can play any FPS in any server located in EEUU,

An MMO should be more than playable but this is not the case, in fact my girlfriend plays another f2p MMO, (a popular one, i’m not going to say the name), in this machine with less than half latency,

If one aplication gives me 200 and the other one 540 and they are both located on the same physical location the problem is yours guys,
