Getting something as a drop or as a reward for doing something is fun imo. Buying something or trying to justify buying something as being a reward is not imo. If I wanted to buy my rewards I would play a different genre of game.

Then gamble for it?

The likelihood of the exact precursor you want dropping randomly from a mob is…. Very low. I don’t really know what you want. Precursor crafting? If so, then I guess wait. But I am nearly positive it will be as bad or worse than farming gold to buy it.

I’ve thrown close to 3k g worth in forge to no avail, made 2 legendaries (bought both pres), farmed myself crazy, 11 80s, over 5k hrs, etc etc. Basically there’s nothing I can do except buy them….I don’t have an option…..that is not fun imo.

It’s not really about being able to buy them…as I can and have..it’s about the premise.

Unfortunately a lot of people have put a lot of time and effort into simulating as closely as possible a random event in mad-made systems, particularly computer games, in order to get around the human instinct to manipulate patterns for their own benefit. And part of the reason it works is because even if we know it’s actually random, and no matter how many times we hear, or say ‘RNG is RNG’ we don’t want to believe it.

But there are problems with the RNG…

A while back, I threw 62 crafted rare staffs, plus the rares returned, and received 7 unnamed exotics back. Now it’s supposed to be random. This is what I got, in no particular order…

Dire Orrian Staff of Rage
Dire Orrian Staff of Rage
Dire Orrian Staff of Rage
Shaman’s Etched Batch of Rage
Rampager’s Pearl Quarterstaff (No upgrade)
Carrion Pearl Quarterstaff (No upgrade)
Valkyrie Pearl Quarterstaff (No upgrade)

So, 3 identical dire orrian staves of rage, 3 pearl quarterstaffs with no upgrades, 4 staves with superior sigil of rage. This from ~20 tries. If this is considered random…it’s broken.

I’ve seen this pattern many times out in PvE. I rarely get rare drops from anything other than the world bosses, perhaps one every few weeks, unless I do the champ train, but when I do, it’s very often followed by a second rare within minutes and that second rare most often is from the same group, so both berserker or carrion, for example. I’ve had this happen well over 10 times. Once, I had had the exact same weapon, including sigil, drop twice within minutes of each other, one from the Jormag chest and one a few minutes later from some random mob near Jormag. When you can reliably predict the outcome, it’s not random.

sooo what’s the issue here? It’s all RNG. You can do a thousand more combines and you could end up with 1-2 more situations where you get the exact same outcome three times in a row.

Heck, I remember getting 7 straight exotics. Did I freak out and think I came across something other than RNG? No. I took it as a random occurence.

I think what they are getting at is that it’s not pure rng. It’s modified so that certain occurrences happen more than others.

ex) outputs of A B C (A=non upgrade, B=upgrade, C=named upgrade)
80% chance of output A
15% chance of output B
5% chance of output C

Within each output there is a sub A1 A2 A3 etc etc
80% chance of output A1 when A is rolled
15% chance of A2 when A is rolled
5% chance of A3 when A is rolled

Within each sub there is another sub A1a A1b A1c etc etc

Thus a chance at A1a is basically predicable, where as C3c is not…ie it’s programmed that certain occurrences happen moreso than others.

Anyone Still Doing Tequatl?

I have one achievement to do to get the title, and I really want it. I know there’s a guild out there that’s still doing Teq somewhere. Are you guys still active? Can I get in on one of your adventures?

I just need the one where I defend all the bastions in one go. (I think that’s the one. I’d have to double check.)

“Sunbringer” is just such a cool title.

If it helps, I’m on Darkhaven, but I’ll guest anywhere.

I’m in the same boat. I know RAID was/is supposed to be doing them, but we still haven’t had the meeting (at least I don’t think we have), to decide if we continue to try.

JQ does it daily at 8est.

Do you guys usually win? And do you guys manage to get the no turrets down achievement?

JQ non-OF gets it done with 8mins+ to spare every night. That include flawless defense. The issue is that you have to be in JQ sparkfly 2 hrs ahead of time to beat the soft cap. Granted the OF gets it done as well just not as reliably.

Fraud Alert – Don’t buy outside of TP!

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

No, the TP is probably the largest gold sink in the game and the ability to keep the money supply under control is paramount. That’s why you can’t opt out.

It is also the biggest source of income for some people who know how to game the tp.

You do know the TP minimizes the effect those people can have, and their profit margins right?

Take away the TP and what will people do? Again, we have the perfect comparison in GW. For the longest time it was impossible to go into Temple of Balthazaar without seeing “WTB Keys 3.2k each” while 20 minutes later the same person spammed “WTS Keys 4k each.” (The specific price fluctuated over the years, but I seem to recall those numbers for a while.) The same behavior was rampant with unid golds, ectos, sapphires, rubies, and armbands.

I can’t say I agree as the tp funnels all players to the trader vs in gw 1 a trader was bound to players in their current location/server. So as in gw a trader had access to possible 1000s possible buyers/sellers in Kamadan (for example) while in gw2 they have access to 100,000s via our centralized game wide trading post.

The issue was/is clearly evident when it simply is not possible for a player to go out and collect the required mats themselves

I’m so sick of this ridiculous, false, ignorant, constantly repeated, often disproven, entirely baseless, lying, worthless comment.

I have more than enough mats for crafting a full set of ascended (non-cloth) armor. None of these mats were purchased on the AH. All of them were earned through normal play. The same is true for my two ascended weapons I’ve already crafted (and I have more than enough mats for another probably 6-10 of them). Repeating the same lie over and over won’t magically make it true.

Well 1st off you are arguing weapons when we are talking about armor. So right off the bat…..wrong subject. 2nd Unless your play is indicative of other players, it has no relevance to the topic as a whole. That said…..

Please by all means go out and gather 300 silk per day everyday on top of doing anything else.

Oh look, you completely ignored large portions of the post in some sort of vain attempt to argue things that aren’t there. Then you make arbitrary new rules and restrictions solely for the sake of defending your still completely falsified point which has absolutely no merit and only serves for you to keep on with some sort of bizarre vendetta you have against…well it’s really not clear why you spend so much time crusading and constantly trying to mislead people. Essence Snow.3194

The issue was/is clearly evident when it simply is not possible for a player to go out and collect the required mats themselves. Having players have a need (to stay within reasonable time constraints) to purchase such an amount via the tp on a regular basis is simply a recipe for speculators (who are unregulated) to run rampant.

With a current profit of 4g 82s per stack, silk bought out of the pre ascended speculation is making some players more gold than anything ever possible in the game. Those that speculated heavily need to leek it back into the market to keep prices elevated, as dumping it back would only serve to crash their own profits. In other words those with mountains of silk will only release it at a rate that doesn’t curb demand.

So basically it’s a two part issue. 1st the required amount of silk was not thought out well by Anet. 2nd player speculators acting such as Debeers (diamonds are not that rare tbh), that have stockpiles of silk will only make them available at a rate that does not curb demand. At such a high unregulated amount of profit can you blame them?

How about a normal trade like in ALL the other MMos Anet?

Oh, you mean so that we will see a MASSIVE increase of scams?

do you even know what a normal trade feature is?

Yep and lots of items have the same in game icon so when someone doesn’t souble or triple check the transaction we will have just as many players crying scammer then too… not to mention the inflation it would cause in the prices of things without the tp as a gold sink.

sure the TP is the only gold sink in the game right? Waypoints Ascended gear etc

The TP is a major…major gold sink in this game. I don’t think the devs would know where to sink gold fast enough without it. It is the only reason I can see why they allow such unregulated activity using it vs shutting down everything else in the game that is remotely out of sync. It is so far left field in terms of this that it’s ability to sink is the only way to justify it….I guess.

CDI- Character Progression-Horizontal

in CDI

morrolan.9608:

How about some of the more egregious vertical progression imbalances get fixed before implementing purely horizontal progression suggestions such as the fixing ascended armor crafting so that it is more equitable instead of light armor taking 36 days to craft, medium armor 24 days and heavy armor 25 days due to the time gating on bolts of damask.

The goal of the T7 materials is not to be a pure time gate for crafting it’s to allow those materials to have value above their cost. This does mean weapons and armor that only take one material take longer to craft if you craft all the T7 mats yourself but you could also buy those mats thus it isn’t a time gate.

We do recognize that cloth prices are a bit high this is a factor of how hard it is to focus farm for leather and cloth. This is something we are looking into.

I have to disagree a little wee bit on the time gate comment… someone had to spend the time, the gating is there regardless although I can see what you’re saying as well. But that’s actually a pretty weak argument… sorry.

However the gating comes into play when you have people that don’t have the in game gold to purchase all the mats nor the real world resources available to convert gems to gold to make up the difference. I think of it as a time gate with work arounds. The gate is in crafting yourself. The work arounds are purchasing off the TP with earned gold or doing the same with purchased gold.

I’ll have to echo this with a lil bit added. If the purpose of a time gate is to keep the hardcores from running away from the casuals (so to say) they allowing gold to bypass it completely invalidates the gate. Silk has become a secondary time gate that does this exact thing. Casuals cannot go out and farm 300 silk per day, nor do they have the resources to buy as much. Thus effectively the gap between the hardcore and the casuals is only widening, which is the exact opposite to ya’lls intent. I am baffled by this as we were told something was black and it turns out white, yet there seems to be no concern….why?

Market manipulation with buy orders?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

Most of the “demand” numbers we have access to are nothing more than hog wash. To explain what I mean by that……Even though there has been a buy order placed that does not equate to actual demand. For one it ignores instant purchases, and for another it ignores erroneous orders. For example last year I placed 300 buy orders for The Colossus at it’s merchant value (don’t remember exactly something like 3s87c ea), which double the “demand” according to spidy. Was the actual demand doubled?…Nope.

Now I can see players trying to do such a thing in an attempt to get speculative rise of an item. Place X amount of orders at insignificant price to give an item the appearance of possible spike (on spidy or other sites), make a little post (what’s going on here), and hope players bite.

Casual Players and Gem Store Inflation

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

the problem is simple, the difference between gold->gem and gem->gold is to big, if they close that gap only then we can talk about a stable exchange.
if it costs 7 gold for 100 gems then it should cost 100 gems for 7 gold, it currently isn’t so.

If they were to do such a thing the exchange would become ripe with speculators and prospectors. Every patch would be accompanied by much more dramatic fluctuations than we have now.

Can Guild Wars 2 be considered Pay-to-Win?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

Of course it is P2W. But no one will ever admit that. The “line” that can’t be crossed is just moved every time it is crossed. No one would play a P2W game because it is “wrong”. So everytime GW2 crosses the line into P2W people just conveniently move the line to something else.

They will use defenses like: well clearly you have never played that other P2W game"

Yet you will notice none of them actually name another game. And even if they were to mention another game it would be some indie game that no one has ever heard of and has like 12 players.

There are 3 what I call barriers of entry into P2W.

1. Cosmetic: in a raiding game where stats are what matters cosmetic is clearly not P2W. However in a game where the only goal of the game is to get a cool outfit it is not as clear. This is the only level I would call “acceptable”.

2. Convenience. Before launch of GW2 this was considered “the line”. Cosmetic was ok, but as soon as something gave you a time advantage over someone else that would “clearly” be P2W. We now have infinite gathering tools, infinite continue coin, infinite salvage kits, upgrade extractor, etc, etc. Basically things that were poorly designed in the game in order to push people to buy a gem store item. Of course people wanted to justify their purchase of these items so the line conveniently moved.

3. Stat advantage. People say this is now the line until you point out that is has also been crossed then they move it again on you. Strength boosters, regen boosters, speed boosters, and armor boosters, can all be acquired through RNG in the gem store. They give a 5% boost to all your stats and work in both PvE and WvW. This is a direct violation of the so called “line” but once you point this out people will say that 5% doesn’t count or since it doesn’t also include sPvP it doesn’t count.

So as you can see, no matter how P2W GW2 actually is most people will use any means they can to tell you that you are wrong in order to justify their playing and buying into a P2W game.

Basically this^

Ofc it can be. The severity of it does not matter when answering a yes or no question. Is it? or Is it not? Is there an advantage or not…yes or no? Changing out “advantage” for a synonym like “convenience” does not change the answer.

Now if the question was “To what level is it P2W?”, then we have the can of worms to which most try to argue in this yes or no question.

Has an error been made regarding silk?

in Crafting

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

TL:DR: Anet is 100% in control of silk price development.

Anet controls the supply and the requirements for crafting. Players control the price we ask on the TP.

Example: If I wanted to drop the price of my Silk, I could do that right away. My choice, not Anet’s.

You as an individual w/o supply relevant to the overall supply will not have a bearing on the market price, which is what most ppl are talking about here.

Market price not individual price.

What will have bearing on market price is if Anet were to decrease amount needed for recipes (alter demand) or increase amounts from salvages, either increase incentive to salvage like they did with the luck addition or flat out increase the silk per salvage (alter supply).

ex) You set a price for your silk. Then Anet alters either supply or demand, maybe both. Then the market price will fluctuate regardless of your price based the changes Anet made.

CDI- Character Progression- Vertical

in CDI

Essence Snow.3194

I hope ya’ll realize that most every pro and reason you just listed gets negated by allowing players to bypass time gates via gold.

This is why we really count crafting gating as a soft gate it is not meant to be a hard gate, but we have a lot of other time gates in the game daily, gathering, guild mission cool down, fractal daily timers ect. I know most of the concern about gating is directed at the crafting gate but I’m more trying to give insight to why we use time gates at all.

That still does not explain why ya’ll allow gold (the hardcore and tp players) to bypass the time gates that hold the rest/majority of the population back. It only serves to further the gap between them, which is in direct contradiction to what they are supposed to do in the 1st place.

So my questions are:

1) How do you define a soft cap?
2) Why was craft ascended designated as a soft cap vs a hard cap?
3) Why was gold allowed to bypass the “soft cap”?

Herr der Friedhoefe.2490

Still no Dev comment that I’ve seen on Time Gates, something that many players brought up early in this thread. Sort of disappointed by that.

So I know time gates is a pretty hot topical overall as I’ve had some pretty heated debates in the past over it. So here is my view on them.

Pro’s
- Time gates help players with less time (If I can only play an hour a day, my time is more rewarded.)
- Repeatable time gates add “pressure” to log in which helps create possible reward loops and play patterns (I want to log in every day, which often can become play experiences, talk with friends, strengthen relationships and get players into a pattern of seeing what’s going on.)
- Time gates equalize players by bringing the hardcore and the causal players closer together. (Players play at an variety of different times and intensities. This makes balancing wealth disparity and play times/progression much harder without actual gates.)
- Time gates help group players up (guilds 1 week timer helps group a large amount of play times into the same time frame.)

Reasons for time gating
- Exploits (Many time gates are there to avoid exploits)
- Overflow issues (the way our tech works without a time gate, you can use overflows to reset your timer)
- Reward Equalization (keep the time to do something more even between hardcore and causal)
- Character vs Account (some things we want to reward the account and thus an account time gated reward allows us to do that cleanly, which stops people from deleting characters and renaming in order to acquire a large number of things)

I hope ya’ll realize that most every pro and reason you just listed gets negated by allowing players to bypass time gates via gold.

So your telling me you converted all those scraps, forged at least 1,200 skill points, 6,000 piles of crystaline dust, and a min of 2,400 gossamer scraps on Tuesday b4 the patch hit?

I’m sry I’m just not buying what you are selling. The skill points alone warrant questioning it.

Ascended Armor Set (Light) + Flamekissed

The difference is the agony mistlock, I’m pretty sure he’s stated that numerous times. Idk why you are bringing up drop rates as they have zero bearing on anything.

Anywho that’s all off topic…

OT so what happens when OP’s flamekissed set gets reworked and they may or may not like it? In terms of the bug, since they are reworking the set there is really no reason to put the time/effort into fixing something that will be removed that doesn’t effect a shred of the population….no offense intended

lol that’s pretty funny……

“You don’t need 100 bolts per day.”
“I just bought 900,000 scraps on Tuesday.”

And I had zero silk scraps before Tuesday ended because I used them all.

I have to ask. How did you use 900,000 scraps (3600 stacks)? That’s 300,000 bolts(1,200 stacks), enough for 85 sets of light armor if I am not mistaken.

but crafters will get an actual “do it yourself” experience and play the game, which is what most people like about making their own stuff, in the first place. Go, gather, craft. Not go, sit at tp for hours, craft.

I agree.

Imho the trading post, as it currently works, is poison for a lot of ideas in this game.

I cannot agree with this more. In the pursuit to have the model economy the tp has sort of castrated a lot of what makes this genre of game fun for a lot of adventurer type players. Evidently adventuring is acceptable collateral damage to having a robust trading environment in an adventuring game…go figure.

Ok another brainstorm idea.

What if certain pieces of ascended gear could be crafted and sold on the TP such as gloves and boots?

Chris

I dislike this idea. Its similar to allowing legendaries to be tradeable on the TP. People with thick wallets to turn $$ into gems into gold can purchase their way to BiS…or people with loads of time to farm materials to sell can purchase BiS.

It solves nothing, unfortunately. For me it would be more of salt in an open wound than helping alleviate the problem.

Doesn’t it allow another avenue for players to work toward the gear if they don’t enjoy crafting? Initially prices may be prohibitive but i would see them dropping.

Chris

It mainly opens it up to ppl with “fat wallets” only. Since they are not really the ones who have to worry about the grind of crafting (since they buy around it) it really doesn’t help anyone. Thus the players that dislike crafting grind are still in same predicament of having to grind for the item via gold albeit w/ or w/o the step of sitting at a crafting station.

The "Gold = Everything" Problem.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I agree that gold>everything else is an issue in this game. I do not agree however the solution to it is to make more binded items.

My main gripe with items is that gold is the only realistic way of getting things. Going out and getting the items ourselves is simply not a realistic option when compared to gold.

If play acquisition were viable then the whole deal with gold goes away.

If we could get multiple players confirming such, that would be good. Without confirmation I am unwilling to take something as fact.

The two main areas for discussion will be Horizontal and Vertical progression, however please understand that the commentary and ideation we are really looking for regarding vertical is around its accessibility in game.

I’m not sure I understand this bit; could you clarify?

Basically:

  • How easy it is to attain the Ascended gear?
  • Is the balance of acquisition of Ascended out of whack between different game-modes (i.e. Easier in PvE than WvW, easier in the open world than it’s intended game mode [Fractals])?

Couldn’t have said it better myself DaiBish. Thanks.

Chris

In terms of collection in WvW and PvE I think its in a pretty good position. However, obtaining in different routes does take a bit longer I felt. I also understand why. This game is very easy in most parts of it. If you increased the drop rate the item would lose its significance because it would be too easy to get. So I feel like you need to increase the difficulty in more ascended gaining areas while also increasing the drop rate. I don’t want to have to do a really hard event 100 times to get one ascended piece.

Yep this is a good point.

Chris

I feel that having the TP being the go to method to obtain items is 10 fold worse than upping the drop rates in terms of significance. I would much rather have items more readily available via the actual game world than having everyone having to resort to buying them off the trading post from some random lucky player that got the drop but wasn’t intending to use it.

This is one of my major complaints about gw2. Setting out to obtain many items in the game world by playing it is simply not an option. To me it kinda defeats the entire ideology of this type of adventure game. If I wanted to buy my rewards from a market I would most like buy a market simulator game.

I am not sure about anyone else, but this has been exceedingly frustrating trying to get into the testing. It has done nothing but taken me in circles on trying to dl the client to the point to where it simply is not worth the hassle.

Edit..now having had 5 other guild members getting stuck at five different places trying to get into the test client leads me to believe that the process is overly complicated and not user friendly.
