Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

They need to turn ALL of the Clothing Tonics into Outfits. Not just the Basic set. And you are right… they need to start giving out the Basic set again to starting characters for free.
Perhaps only displayed when actually in WvW? Context and all that, y’know. Feels like an unsolicited sales call during dinner.
I now have what can only be described as ADVERTISING cluttering up my screen.
In the upper right corner of my screen there is a gold star labeled “Fall Competitive Events”. Clicking it drops down an invitation to join in on the WvW Fall Tournament.
I don’t care about WvW, and I want my screen space back. I’m sure even the WvWers want their screen space back. Guild Wars 2 has always prided themselves in a “clean UI” so that we aren’t distracted from the world we are immersed in.
This is an invitation. It should come in the mail. Not posted on a billboard.
Please tell me there’s a way to get rid of this other than waiting until the tournament is over?
If you play a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, you must have in mind that you are going to play with…well…a lot of people.
And by your impeccable logic, you must also expect that everyone has to expect to ROLE PLAY, right?
Brilliant.
I was in the area when the Defense of Nebo Terrace event popped up, so I went in to loan a hand.
At least one of the attacking waves (at the WEST gate, I believe) consisted entirely of Veterans, Elites, and a Champion!
There were only a couple of players there, so I’m guessing the event scaling is glitchy here. They took over Nebo, and the tough guys ran off leaving a group of “normals” to occupy the town. But for awhile there, I thought I was back in the Queen’s Pavilion.
When a map’s population gets low, the game decides to close it. If you are on that map, they will give you an hour to decide to voluntarily switch the a more populous map. If you elect to go, you are granted the Volunteer’s Blessing buff for 10 minutes:
The Karma Gain and XP gain are fine. But the Movement Speed buff affects the way my character “handles”. If I am doing Jumping Puzzles, it really throws me off. I would love to see that particular bonus be changed to something that doesn’t directly change the way I play.
I had the same problem at the Festival of the Four Winds… whenever we successfully completed the Charged Crystal hunt, we were granted 10 minutes of increased movement speed. The Labyrinthine Cliffs are all about jumping, so it really messed me up for that period. I usually stood around yawning until the timer expired. I don’t want to have to do that in the general world, especially as often as those map closures seem to be coming. (It’s getting old fast).
I hope you check back occasionally. They MAY just fix some stuff eventually, and we’d love to see you again. I enjoyed your contests, win or lose. I gave the game key I won to my brother, but I am also cautioning him that now might not be the best time to start playing. I was hurt more by the first Patch than the second, and almost quit myself. I’m still not quite sure why I’m still here other than force of habit. Perhaps the 3rd Patch will spell doom for me as well. So much has been lost from where we started. You will be missed.
I send you off with a picture of how I feel about what has happened to our game.
(edited by Hamfast.8719)
It sure seems like I’m targeting a lot of things off to the side of my screen again instead of the basically frontal guys I can actually see.
EDIT: [SUGGESTION] If minis are such an issue, then why not limit them to cities only, since you can’t even see them anywhere else anyway.
A most emphatic NO! I use my minis out of town as much as, or more than in town.
The stated goal with this new patch was for us to be able to have our minis out all the time without having to re-click them at every portal. I’m gonna bug ’em until they get do that. If they remove my minipet, they can remove your Legendary weapon. THAT will save them some graphics resources.
People can hardly ever see ANY minipets anymore. The toons only have one “idle time” emote anymore. Nobody has any feet anymore. It seems to me the MegaServer has all sorts of resources available to it these days since it isn’t drawing half of what it used to.
I am anxious to try out the expanded ability of the Elementalist Elite skill Glyph of Elementals, but there is a bug that needs to be fixed.
When you hover your pointer over the skill icon, it shows info for ALL FOUR ELEMENTS, not just the element you are currently attuned to. This has the result of giving you a tower of tooltip information that scrolls beyond the top of the screen and below the bottom of the screen. See attached picture.
I am usually 100% in favor of more customization options. I just feel like in this case it would be nothing more than a band-aid that undermines the point of commander tags being something that are visible map-wide.
I PvE, mostly solo. I have never followed a commander, and don’t foresee that I will ever have any reason or desire to follow one. In fact I generally try to stay away from commanders, because I don’t want the almighty zerg to swoop in, finish my opponent for me in 3 seconds, and swoop out again.
Commander tags are always on top of other map icons. They hide gathering nodes from me. They hide Merchants. Waypoints. Vistas. POIs. Dynamic Event icons. The directional N on my compass mini-map. Everything.
And even BEFORE the 9/9 patch, the number of Commanders on any PvE map was out of control. I do not believe the people who say it’s going to die down, since the multiple colors and the switch to being Account-wide only makes them more exciting.
Commander tags in PvE are mostly just “vanity plates” for people who think that the point of commander tags is so people can see them map-wide.
Give me that check box for PvE. Now.
Why?
THAT is the question I want answered. I see ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why everyone can’t have their minipet out. How can their intent be for NOBODY to hardly ever see their minipets anymore? This doesn’t need tweaking. It needs removing.
As some people have pointed out, you could have an entire zone filled with nothing but Rangers, and they aren’t going to remove their pets due to excessive strain on the servers.
The last Patch allows Account-shared Legendary weapons, so we have FAR more particle effects flying around than before. Sometimes it feels like the ground is covered in oil stains (I’m looking at you, Twilight.) And yet you force us to fight in battles with black streaks blocking my view.
You will NEVER convince me that displaying minipets in any way slows things down. When you “tweak” this feature that is “working as intended”, you had better tweak it so that nobody EVER sees that message again.
Remove the “safeguard”. We should NEVER have our minis disabled. If they want to get rid of excess graphics rendering, kill the stupid Legendary weapon effects, I say. Those really have an effect on graphics rendering in combat.
They apparently applied a new build this afternoon. I had a download before I logged in, but I still can’t get my minis out, and my feet still don’t show in my Hero Panel, and I’m still missing most of my “standing around idle” emotes.
What did they fix?
I ask this: why do you want it disabled? How does it annoy you?
Haven’t you read anything? They cover up all the map icons. Merchants. Waypoints. Hearts. Vistas. Harvesting Nodes. Etc. They also cover up edge-of-map icons pointing to important destinations. And they are NOT NECESSARY for the VAST MAJORITY of PvE. If I have the OPTION to turn off Commander tags, the only thing it hurts is your vanity.
(And EVERYTHING covers up the N pointer on my compass! (Grrrr!) )
You would think they could cull a few clusters of plants out of the scenery instead of our minis.
This MUST be a bug, though. I got hit with a request to leave my map because it was getting empty, and I still couldn’t take out my mini due to too many players.
But you are absolutely correct. We should NEVER have to see that message. If they’re going to cull minipets for potential lag-causing issues, why don’t they kill the stupid Legendary greatsword “swooshes” and all the ridiculous footprints as well?
I just received my first “This map is getting empty – would you like to switch to a more populated map now?” prompt.
And I still can’t take out my minipet due to excessive players on the map.
Ahh… thanks. I was busting my brain trying to find something in the Options. Overlooked that. (I was just hunting through the check boxes.) I will play with it, but my first impression is that the pointer is just additional screen clutter. Been doing okay without it for 2 years.
Okay… my Living Story goal in the upper right has a pointer directing me to it now. Does this do something else? Because I already have the green star on my mini map pointing out my destination. Does it serve some other function? Or is it totally redundant?
Hmm… “About minipets”? They didn’t like my subject title, so they changed it? How about fixing the minipets instead of my thread?
I probably should step away for a bit and try to calm down before I get myself infracted. Last patch really killed a lot of things for me, and I’m still sore about it. First thing I did today was check out the minipets to see if they really DID stay with me all the time. So far, I haven’t been able to take any pets out anywhere.
Feel the sarcasm oozing out!
I mean seriously. They don’t keep up with us. Many don’t appear underwater. Now ANet added a great feature that allows us to have them out ALL THE TIME! (Unless you happen to be in a MegaServer, in which case you can NEVER take them out.)
Holy poop… gimme that checkbox NOW! I’m flipping back and forth between my own map and an online interactive map to figure out where my missing heart quest is. THERE IT IS! Under that danged red commander!
First new build… THAT didn’t fix the minipet problem. (Sigh).
The populations haven’t changed that I’m aware of, so why should they have to remove our minis now when they never did it before? The promise of “always have your mini out” has become “never have your mini out”.
This HAS TO be a bug! It needs a HotFix ASAP!
You can see your own minipet. You won’t see other peoples. I seen my mini pet every time this message popped up.
Not happening here. Nothing. Changed zones and still can’t get out my mini. This needs a HotFix ASAP.
(Like I really needed another reason to dislike the MegaServer. Thpppt!)
You came to the same conclusion most everybody else did. ANet took some nice pieces of clothing, and assembled them in some pretty ugly ways. Then they made them into TONICS instead of OUTFITS, so they can’t even by dyed to preference.
Like I said, the Town Clothes were too much work for ANet to have ready in time for the Wardrobe roll-out, so they did a quick-fix and wound up paying out a lot of refunds because of it.
Two major events are coming up fast: Halloween and Wintersday. Will Lion’s Arch be ready for merrymaking?
The place is already a ghost town. Throw up some of the usual theme decorations and it will be spookier than ever for Halloween.
Come the Wintersday festival, it will be coated in snow and hidden behind colorful decorations. Then a few weeks after Wintersday, when the magical snow finally melts away, it will reveal a gleaming new fully-repaired city for everyone to enjoy!
Thanks, Tixx! Thanks ANet! Make these the most enjoyable celebrations yet!
The first time I did that I soloed it on my Elementalist and lost more armor than I have in a long time. But despite her squishiness, I enjoyed myself and made it through. I don’t know if I’ll take my next character in with other players or not, but just knowing what I’m facing and how to deal with it ahead of time should make a world of difference. The first time you do anything new is a learning experience. I bet you do much better next time.
I was just PvEing yesterday in Mount Maelstrom when I realized I must’ve lost connection. (I was running around and nothing was responding to me). Sure enough, a few moment later I got the disconnect notice. When I got back I was dead on the ground. Not sure that’s ever happened to me before, even at the super-crowded Maw after reset where I’ll often lag out, disconnect and come back okay. (Sometimes WITH the chest waiting!)
some pov fakes with box of chocolate
Were you using /sleep during these screenshots or was this from vistas?
He’s using a Gem Store item (Valentines Day only?) called a Box of Chocolates. It’s sort of a Brawling Toy. Skill #4 shrinks you. I bought it specifically for my Norn to use in areas with low ceilings.
Here are all the ones I have. I know what I think of them, but you need to judge for yourself. Taste is a matter of taste.
Remember that these are TONICS. They last 15 minutes. If you go through a portal, it comes off. If you get into combat it comes off. (You can Costume Brawl with them, but they have no skills themselves. You will have to have your own Brawl Toy). You can’t add or remove any pieces of the costume. You can’t change the dye colors. What you see here is what you get.
The first picture is the Dragon Emblem Tonic. You can’t get it… they are Account Bound and were special giveaways (mostly in Germany, I’m told). I just thought I’d show you the crazy dye job on the boots that I told you about.
The LAST picture is what I am doing nowadays for my “Town Clothes”. Whenever I want to kick back in town and relax in something other than combat gear, that is my new look. It isn’t a Tonic; it is made up of creatively combined armor pieces.
Enjoy!
Next step… make them KEEP UP with you! Sometimes it seems to take up to 30 seconds after you stop moving before they come sauntering along.
I ran my butt off racing in Baby Dolyak form and carrying Charged Crystals in the name of aiding Lion’s Arch. I think the Zephyrites quietly split the money with Ellen Keil. I'm glad their airship crashed when they pulled up anchor and fled town.
Those endless tonics are new. We used to have something in the game called “Town Clothes”, which were relaxed, non-armor looks for our characters. Back on April 15th, many of our Town Clothes got converted into tonics as a quick fix for issues they would have had making them work with the new wardrobe.
Unfortunately, ANet did a slipshod rush-job on them, and they wound up paying out a lot of refunds to the Town Clothing owners who didn’t like the results.
There are MANY different sets… COMMON, ORNATE, CASUAL, RIDING, etc. I probably have most of them and could model them for you on various races. But the MAIN problem you’ll find is that they use weird color schemes based on the RACE of the character who uses it, so it can surprise you. For example, I have a GW2 “Dragon Logo Shirt” Tonic. White T-shirt with the GW2 logo, Khaki short-shorts, and bright red and black boots on my Human female. Thpppt! Really weird combination.
Just buy an ENDLESS COMMON CLOTHING TONIC and see for yourself if you want to explore the others. It’ll only set you back a couple of coppers. The Common Clothing used to be free to every new character, and will probably be the most color controlled. Keep in mind, these are TONICS. You can’t dye anything, and you can’t mix and match anything. What they look like is what they will always look like.
If you REALLY want to see more after trying that out, tell me what Race/Sex and which Tonic. I can use my extra character slot to create anything I don’t already play, and I’ll get back to you when I can.
ANet did Player to Player commerce in GW1. That is exactly why they won’t even consider doing it in GW2. Their experience in Guild Wars 1 was their teacher, and they learned their lesson well. (Why do you think their spam filters are so rigid in this game?)
In Player to Player trading, ANet could not be at fault for any bad transactions, whether an intentional scam or an honest mistake. But many victims would complain to ANet anyway. When ANet didn’t rescue them from their own mistake, then ANet themselves often got bad-mouthed. Nobody was happy (except the scammers, and so they thrived.)
For that reason alone, you can put this discussion to bed. This company is not going to go through that headache a second time.
(We, the GW1 players, petitioned ANet for years to create an “auction house” because we saw firsthand all the havoc that Player to Player trading wrought upon our game.)

embrace the trenchcoat
We’ve embraced it for two years now. We’ve had little choice. We’re asking that they give some other fashions a chance.
As long as we’re showing some old GW1 favorites, here’s some female Ranger armor pieces I’d love to see make a comeback. The Luxon Top with the Elite Druid’s skirt were a great combo. Gives her a sorta “jungle girl” appearance, which still definitely qualifies as being a Ranger-type look.
Very, very happy to see a thread discussing this. Thanks all.
Sylvari T2 Cultural has a tailcoat that works reasonably well. It still flaps around a bit, but the two ‘tails’ taper in-line with the legs (making the effect look almost like no coat).
For a few silver its not bad. I’ve combined it with T2 leggings and TA boots (T2 and T1 boots weren’t matching well on the color schemes for some reason). But due to that I’ll probably keep any further Medium classes to Sylvari (I already have Engi, can’t play Thief due to my wrists, so just Ranger to try again).
Yes, I’ve been using the T2 Sylvari Nightshade Coat in conjunction with the Viper’s Leggings mini skirt as my “Town Clothes” replacement ever since the last Feature Patch. Still a leafy butt-cape that clips with the leg occasionally, but it looks casual and cultural at the same time. So for me it’s an acceptable workaround to trenchcoats. (Now if only I can find some footwear that doesn’t look like old army boots.)
Blast from the past.
Ahh… thank goodness the massive, ugly one-shoulder decorations that all GW1 Ranger armors seemed to sport are optional in GW2.
Also in the Human Home instance is a Priory Scholar named Josir. He’s really beside himself. A really disturbing effect, but it’s not two figures on top of one another since there’s only one name tag. I think he’s from Siam originally.
Mira is in my home instance. She’s in my bed in my home instance. She’s standing in my bed in my home instance. She was wounded at Claw Island, and shipped home to recover. I had taken the "commoner" branch of the Human storyline, and was raised by Andrew and Petra in this building. I later had Roleplayed at one time that this had been my bedroom growing up. Mira forced me to change rooms, and now she's just a crazy lady at the Tavern who jumps up and down on her mattress until I burst in and tell her to knock it off. I mean really! The plaster is falling into peoples drinks in the bar below. (Note the Town Clothes – I reported this glitch a long time ago.
Mira just creeps me out.
Let sleeping Norns lie.
You still see this from time to time in Wayfarer Foothills near the Ice Wurms event chain. Passed out Norns, sometimes even walking in their sleep (labeled “Passed Out Warrior”, or something like that).
Raise the Roof!
I think this issue has actually been fixed now. Hoelbrak is a pretty visible place for something like this, so he must’ve gotten a lot of bug reports to move to the head of the line.
I’ve been swimming with the Moas in Bloodtide Coast since the Betas. Unfortunately, they aren’t listed amongst my Ranger’s Aquatic or Amphibious pet choices, so I went with my “Godzilla Precursor” instead.
Yes, there are plenty of pants and several miniskirts. Just darned few TOPS for the Medium armors that don’t come way down to the knees (or further), covering up that legwear.
I picture thieves and Rangers as needing to be somewhat nimble most of the time. Most of the selections we have look bulky and burdensome. Coats can be flashy, but they don’t really fit two of our three Professions.
They’ve been hitting me in waves the last couple days. They seem to be organizing together and hitting people one right after the next right after the next. New strategy I guess.
Why would I pay them as much as $800 to take the risk of losing my account forever? All those “guarantees”… do they guarantee that they will stand behind me and fight to restore my account? I’m sure their word pulls a lot of weight with ANet. I feel safe just thinking about it.
Last I checked goggles aren’t a monocle.
Apologies. Her head is in profile, and it looked like my Asuran Engineer’s eyepiece. Couldn’t tell it covered both of her eyes.
EDIT: Non-skirt/non-trenchcoat here. But it is a butt cape. Not bad, but once again you gotta go to cultural armor to get away from those things a little.
(edited by Hamfast.8719)
Check my post pic above. Fem Orc at the ready.
Looks BORG to me, what with the techie monocle and all. Or perhaps the mythical “BorgFrogOrc”.
Wait… is she seriously pantsless? where are her petal panties? How’d you do thaaat?
Tier 3 Cultural armor. (It’s what Caithe wears. Or doesn’t…)
I previewed her as a male in the Total Makeover Kit… no changes other than sex. I think I came up with an Orc race.
Same outfit, different color scheme. I kinda like this one better. It looks more “serious” with the leather top and less like Sir Peter of Pan.
(I had done Tequatl earlier, and this attempt killed her even faster. So don’t worry… I wasn’t hurting them by not participating. In fact, I’m certain my /cheers on the sideline really turned the tide.)
I don’t mind the odd use of overcoat since its cold in them thar Shiverpeaks.
(And I can’t believe you called her Breanna Banana!)
Breanna is named for my Niece
And her GW2 namesake is prepared for the Shiverpeaks as well, with a little help from some longer gloves and warm, bushy cultural shoulders:
