As soon as you introduce player-to-player direct trades, chat fills up with trade spam. And no matter what safeguards are applied, there will still be scammers and suckers. It isn’t worth the added annoyance of constant door-to-door salesmen and the pitiful crying of marks who get cheated.

EDIT:

Blegh. All y’alls are haters! If every other MMO allows this and a trading post system why can’t we?

If everyone jumped off a cliff, would “all y’alls” follow?

I just completed my Daily Dodger achievement. Now I can tumble out of the way instead of stumble on my coat.

Seriously… I can’t think of any traditional Ranger or Thief who wears a trenchcoat. A cape/cloak sometimes, but not a trenchcoat. Seems reasonable for Engineers, perhaps, but I’m wracking my brain and can’t come up with any “traditional” Engineer figures in the world of fiction/fantasy.

I hit upon an armor combo today, and liked the looks so well that I just had to share it.

  • Character: Female Sylvari
  • Profession: Ranger (Medium armor)
  • Goal: Something light-looking. Not a Tranchcoat! Sort of “sylvan”. (Think Peter Pan-ish)
  • Surprise Element: Aetherblade Medium Leggings

So many of the medium armor pieces look bulky, and trenchcoats have never seemed “Rangery” to me. Certainly not for a female Sylvari. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that one of the ugliest armor sets (my opinion) had a component that filled out my designs very well.

After much item previewing, I stumbled across the Aetherblade Leggings. Normally, they are barely visible when worn as a set. But they happen to mesh perfectly with the Krytan Jerkin to give a “long shirt with pants” look to my Ranger. The Privateer Shoulders turn the vest from a sleeveless “biker” look into that Sylvan look I was shooting for.

Color me surprised; I found treasure hidden amongst that goofy Steam Punk stuff. What’s next… something from one of the Zodiac sets? Anyhow, I think the result is trim and clean. Much more suited to a female Sylvari Ranger than a pirate costume.

Can we get tabs for the Hero panel?

I also asked for this a short time after April 15th. It is a very clumsy interface when you have to “back out” of each window and return to the selection page before you can switch to a different window.

All of our selections should be on TABS, so we can switch (for example) from Wardrobe to Dyes in one click.

If it’s too late now, then for goodness sake work on it for the next Feature Patch. (Patch 2 seems to be mostly about Quality of Life stuff. This is very much a QoL issue).

The Jungle Wurm Cheats!

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

I had the day off, and was working map completion in Bloodtide Coast. I was near the Jungle Wurm event when it spawned. The picture below is from the very end of his appearance. From the tons of health remaining on all 3, you can tell that it was during non-peak hours.

Since nobody was around, the Jungle Wurm decided he’d cheat.

Look at the mini-map. I am well outside the Wurm’s red “sphere of influence”. The Wurm himself isn’t even on the Mini-Map, which is full-sized here. (You can just see him way outside the entrance of the Oasis I am in.)

I went AFK to answer the phone, and when I looked at the screen again I had lost about a third of my health. I guess I was the closest target, even though I was way out of the area.

Fortunately, my Toon is a Guardian, and many of the attacks I was taking were being blocked by my Aegis. If I were any other character, I would probably have died.

The Wurm cheats.

(On the other hand, I’m loving the daytime non-peak playing time! The population size is so much better! Not a zerg in sight!)

I MISS the compass sooooooo much! (round mini-map). I much prefer the rotating “up is always what’s in front of you”, but the “N” on the current rotating mini-map is way too hard to see. It needs ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS, and they need to be ALWAYS ON TOP of the other jillions of map-edge icons.

Ressing people doesn't reward you

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

I don’t think reviving requires a physical reward for people to do it.

I never cared much about titles. The “Combat Healer” was one of the first I ever attained, but it made zero difference to me in whether or not I decided to revive someone. And I do my Daily Reviver almost exclusively using NPCs.

In my experience (PvE) there does seem to be a little less reviving going on since the MegaServer. That’s merely personal observation, unsupported by facts. If true, your guess is as good as anybody else’s as to why this should be. PvP or WvW may be different.

Mostly, I find that people still like to help other people if the situation is not too prohibitive. In tough places, fast team revival of downed characters is still done a lot, but not so much if the character is completely dead. At that point, revival becomes just too slow to be practical. For the good of the team effort, most people understand anymore that when dead, it is best to go to the nearest waypoint. Your eventual victory is your reward for cooperative, intelligent gameplay in a big battle.

But in the open world, I think most people just plain like to come running to the rescue. It feels good to be the hero. It feels even better if the revived player has the courtesy to type a simple “TY” (hint, hint!) That’s usually reward enough for most people. (Though not necessarily expected in the big chaotic battles).

Count me in, big time. I have lag issues to the point of occasional disconnects during some of the big boss events now. I never had a problem before. And some events go so fast that I can’t get in a single shot to get participation credit.

I’ve had to turn player names off, too. The mass of text on my screen pretty much blocks out everything else in town.

But more important than the tangible issues are the intangible ones. I like to feel as if my participation actually means something. You don’t get that in a zerg.

A Shoulder to SMILE On!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

You surprised me, ANet.

Usually, you release shoulder armor that is about 4 times too large, and floats in midair to boot.

I ignored the Rampart heavy armor skin when it was initially released, as being way too “busy” for my tastes. But it has been a long time, and I have been aching for something new, so I gave it a closer look.

Lo, and behold! I noticed in the preview that the shoulders were pretty normal-sized! You got my money with that. The remainder of the pieces will probably go forever unused on either my Warrior or my Guardian, but I don’t feel cheated at all. I think the Rampart Pauldrons go real well with Valeri The Valkyrie’s winter outfit.

Keep the “normal” sized gear coming, and I’ll keep buying!

If ANet selects, they’ll have to be prepared to weather a storm of criticism from the people who think they’re already out of touch with the community.

If you leave it up to a Forum “vote” here, then you will only be getting the opinion of the forum-goers. (Not to mention you will have to MANUALLY tally up the results, and many people will chime in multiple times. No control.)

As I suggested in the other thread:

During the Beta testing, we were given little in-game questionnaires to help you guys decide what people liked, and disliked, and what needed work. That seems like a good way to reach a nice, sizable spectrum of gamers. Do you think your little questionnaire program could be adapted to quiz the community on their desires?

You can control that each account gets to vote only ONE time. Offer a checklist of “hot topics” we’d like to see addressed. Your computers can quickly tally up what topics are the most important to the community as a whole, not just the forum-goers.

Easier. Faster. More representative.

And with the “break” in the Living Story, I further imagine a couple weeks of some minor festivities so ALL players can celebrate, not just those having birthdays. (Special drops, mini quests, etc.)

Communicating with you

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

First off, Chris, thank you for coming forth and doing what is not really a part of your job description, and doing it on your weekend to boot. I have always understood that many of the Developers do what they do out of love for the game. Your taking personal time to repair the lines of communication only reinforces that notion.

Put anybody who thinks you aren’t serious about this on your “ignore” list. You’re doing a nice, diplomatic job so far in the face of some really hostile comments, whereas I might’ve managed to get myself infracted by this point.

Now on with my thoughts…

I have often read comments that most of the gaming community doesn’t go to the forums, and when they do it is often because they have a gripe about something. So while a CDI may be a good way to brainstorm solutions, it may not be the best way to determine WHAT needs to be solved. The forums don’t reach a broad enough section of the community.

During the Beta testing, we were given little in-game questionnaires to help you guys decide what people liked, and disliked, and what needed work. That seems like a good way to reach a nice, sizable spectrum of gamers. Do you think your little questionnaire program could be adapted to quiz the community on their desires?

Let each account respond ONE time. Offer a checklist of “hot topics” we’d like to see addressed. Everyone can check three items on the list, and your computers can tally up what topics are the most important to the community as a whole. (Checklist responses only… no freeform replies. That would take forever to sort through).

Once the results are in, THEN open your CDIs and talk about the “winning” topics. This would help assure that the issues we discuss are truly the issues uppermost in the minds of the majority of the community.

First Person Perspective Suggestion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

First person view, I don’t see much of combat advantage tho, mostly it’s gonna give you disadvantage of limited visibility during combat.

This is exactly why the Devs have said that they don’t see it happening anytime soon.

But what we want them to understand, is that many of the people asking for First Person View are not interested in using it for combat. They don’t want to turn the game into a First Person Shooter.

We want the ability to mouse-scroll our viewpoint all the way in and out, just like in GW1. We want to do that for big characters with low ceilings. We want to do it for screen caps without our toons in the foreground. We want to do it for looking UP and not having our toon block our view.

And the nice thing is that they ALREADY HAVE THIS! First Person View was there during the betas at one point, and the Devs have been monkeying around with it periodically ever since. It is HERE, but they aren’t releasing it to us because of the combat issue.

We want them to understand that combat is NOT an issue for everyone. We DON’T all want a First Person Shooter. Give us what you have, and it will be enough. If we get into combat while zoomed in to First Person, all we need to do is scroll our mouse wheel to zoom back out.

There’s nothing hard about this at all. Just enable it for us and emphasize that it is not a recommended mode for combat. We’ll love you for it.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hamfast.8719

I use the rotating mini-map. I need to be able to see the little teeny-tiny NORTH indicator to know what direction I’m heading. More and more, Commander tags are joining the other edge-of-map icons to conceal that poor little letter N.

The guy might be a legitimate leader. He might be just another attention-seeker. I don’t care. I don’t do WvW, and have never had the need to be “led” in PvE. (I despise Zergs). To me it’s just more pointless screen clutter.

I am all for toggles to give us individual control over what we can see. Commander Tags. Legendary Footprints. The various Legendary Weapon “clouds” and “swooshes” and other vision obscuring effects. Toggles for the combat effects we want to see (i.e. Only our own / Only my party’s effects / All effects). Toggles! Toggles! Give me more control!

I’ve had “Bubbles” (my Elementalist) since Diablo 2. I wasn’t going anywhere without her, and I’ve always loved wizards/spellcasters.

It’s my Charr that surprised me. When I began following the plans for GW2, I didn’t want to play a Charr. I had played Guild Wars 1 since the early betas, and Charr were the bad guys.

But while eagerly awaiting GW2, I jumped on every YouTube video I could find. The first time I saw the Charr’s 4-legged running animation, I was hooked. I know some people can’t stand it. They say it feels “slow” (even though all characters move at the same speed). But I just love it. In fact I get kind of peeved when I am running through an area and a critter hits me and makes me slow down to combat speed and hop up on my hind legs. Even re-stowing my weapon doesn’t return me to my 4-legged running stance until I am once again out of combat.

I pretty much play my norn everytime I log in and idc the reasoning I still want first person view. Idt there’s any low ceiling area where you rly have to pay attention to the ground except maybe cm. but if there was 1st person I’d have an easier time in cm. I mainly want the feature for screenshots anyway. I remember reading somewhere back when the game first came out, the lack of first person view was because they want to emphasize the idea that the game is all about your character, your character is the hero blah blah blah. If that were the reason, it’d be a rediculous reason. Just implement it already, it’d take 5min.

Let me tell you, I really feel for the SAB fans. Is there a reason you can’t enjoy content you like? I don’t imagine you care whether or not there’s a part 3 out, do you? You should be able to play parts 1 and 2 anytime you like. It’s mystifying. It’s even worse than making the various Activities (Keg Brawl, Southsun Survival, etc.) available only on certain days.

I don’t like SAB, but I say open it up and keep it open! Variety is the spice of life. The game could use a little spicing up about now.

I dunno all the tech involved in doing it, but apparently they already have first person camera… they just aren’t happy with the way it works in combat. So I say take combat out of the equation completely by forcing a zoom-out.

Either that, or just give it to us as-is, and let us know that it isn’t a recommended mode for combat. That way there’s almost zero time and effort involved to give us a little of that quality-of-life improvement.

How to make FIRST PERSON VIEW Work!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There are lots of valid reasons for people to be able to zoom in to a first-person point of view. Among them: Preventing “crazy camera” when using large characters in areas with low ceilings, taking screen captures without your toon in the way, and being able to look way UP at things without your toon blocking the view.

In the video below, Matt Wuerffel talks about how they automatically change the Field of View for Boss fights, zooming out so you can see more of the action when a huge bad guy appears. Devon Carver then says that the biggest problem they are having with instituting a First Person camera is because of the GW2 combat style… you lose vital perspective of where you are and what you’re facing, and where attacks are coming from.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gjo8MklCiLI

Now that I finally know what their problem is with First Person camera, it isn’t a hard solution at all. In the same way that they automatically adjust our zoom level when a Boss appears, why can’t they also automatically zoom us out of first person mode whenever we’re attacked?

For people who want a first-person-shooter experience, this won’t do any good, and from what Devon said it doesn’t look as if it’ll ever be instituted anyway because of the combat issues. But couldn’t this be done to solve those other problems? Simply take us out of first person view when in combat. (FPS is actually rarely mentioned when I see a thread asking for a First Person camera. If that is all that is keeping them from implementing it, then just take it out of the equation!)

NOTE: Taking damage from a fall should NOT zoom us out of first person. Some JP’s have natural long drops intentionally. (Along the same lines, falling damage or poision air, etc. should not make Ranger pets un-stow either. The game needs to differentiate between attack damage and environmental damage).

EDIT: If First Person view were added, and ANet didn’t provide automatic zooming out in combat, what would it hurt? How hard is it to scroll your mouse wheel out manually so you can see your surroundings to fight? We did it all the time in GW1. They’re over-thinking it.

What does that even have to do with what I said? I’ve never once commented on being in agreement with Vayne’s points that megaserver is the best solution for the most people. I’ve been outspoken in the things I dislike about megaservers. But just because I don’t agree with Vayne about everything doesn’t mean that I’m going to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Amethyst estimated that 20% of GW2 players make up the roleplay community. Vayne said that was a high estimate. I agree. That’s the extent of what’s going on with my involvement.

I’m sorry if I don’t know the history of what you support and what you don’t. To me it sounded like you were sliding us back into the RP topic again, instead of the MegaServer topic, and I misunderstood. I agree that the designation “MMORPG” means absolutely nothing. Some people see that and want to pigeonhole GW2 into a certain category. That doesn’t work, especially in a game that once touted itself as the place you can “play the way you want to play”.

I guess I don’t exist? Because I’m totally with Vayne on this point. Just because something is called an RPG doesn’t mean people are roleplaying in the sense that it is meant when one talks about how the megaserver impacted the RP community.

Just as not all people actually care to Role Play in their RPG, so also do not all people want to be buried in bodies in their MMO.

ANet? Are you listening? Are you listening? We’re slowly figuring this thing out for you. Will you implement it if we come to some sort of accord? (THIS is where the Developers are supposed to return to the forums and say “You are learning, Grasshopper!”)

Okay, let’s try this.

If the mega server was taken off cities, for WvW and RPers, how far would that go to solving most of the complaints?

What complaints wouldn’t be solved by that and what can be done to solve the other complaints?

Okay… fair enough. Let me try to meet you halfway.

My main issue with the MegaServer is that I prefer a less populated world in general so that I can feel more challenged, and so that I feel like a more “important” part of what’s going on around me. It is for that reason I selected a lower population server in the first place.

Secondary to that is the super-crowded scenarios; cities (mostly around the banks, merchants, and other “important” NPCs) and the bigger Boss/Champion fights. I have had to turn off Player Names in order to even see through the cloud of text in cities. And I have fairly regular lag to the point of occasional disconnects during the bigger Boss fights because of the tremendous amount of data being shoved through my Internet connection. (Not to mention they are no longer remotely fun with the Zerg mentality in control. Gone in 60 seconds, with no feeling that my contribution meant a thing).

Taking the cities off the MegaServer would solve my city overcrowding complaints completely. No issue there for me personally, although I DO have one Guildie who says she prefers the crowding.

But the overcrowded “outdoors” remains a problem. If it were reduced by about 50%, I would be okay I think. But I doubt that everyone would agree. I know I’ve seen threads where people want to increase zone capacity for the tougher “Mega-Bosses” like Tequatl and the 3-Headed Wurm.

It’s a stumper. How’s THIS for a middle-ground solution: 3 tiers of MegaServers.

Split up the Servers. Designate some of them as HIGH POPULATION, some as MEDIUM POPULATION, and some of them as LOW POPULATION. Then have a MegaServer for each of the three population sizes, combining populations from only their designated Servers. Medium Population servers can be MegaServed to maximize their zones at approximately the level we have now. High Population servers could be MegaServed to maximize zone levels at a higher number, for people wanting that for Tequatl. Low Population servers would have a lower zone maximum for those of us who feel crowded right now.

Pros? Cons? They’d have to give everyone a one-time free server transfer, I imagine, (including Guild Bank transfer I suppose) if their server becomes designated to be of a population density they aren’t comfortable with. 3 MegaServers. The Low MegaServer, the Medium MegaServer, and the High MegaServer.

No the guy who posted didn’t really know anything about the issue and admitted as much. But he still felt strongly enough to demand that Anet turn back the megaserver. He had no idea anyone liked it.

Edit: Obviously the positive responses came AFTER he felt urged to make that post.

I’ll take that example with a grain of salt. Assuming 12 posts constitutes a “mob”:

  • by your own previous reckoning, many of those posts were probably the same people chiming in multiple times.
  • also (I believe) by your previous statements (it could have been someone else) most of the people who hate the MegaServer have left the game by now. So it’s no wonder the poor guy felt outnumbered and picked on.

What I find interesting, is that now that the MegaServer has had plenty of time to be “tweaked” and otherwise “improved”, someone can still come in to the game cold and feel angered by the changes it has shoved down our throats. How good is a system that produces outrage as a first impression?

EDIT: I’m not aiming that question at YOU, Vayne. It seems BOTH sides of the issue agree about Cities being off the MegaServer, and that it still needs lots of work if it’s going to stay. I’m hoping ANet will see that question and ask it of themselves.

You’re getting the thread off track. How about throwing around some more unsubstantiated numbers to prove how many people like the MegaServer and how many people hate it? That’s always a good show.

None of the fighting styles in the game are really that realistic either, so why should we have realistically sized weapons to go with an unrealistic fighting style?

Why not? Some people would like it, and it doesn’t take anything away from people who like the oversized weapons (and jumbo shoulders that float in the air, and gauntlets that dwarf a hockey goalie’s equipment).

so instead of having a weapon on legendary size, there is a cry for letter openers?
i am happy with the size of the blades, i even find some GS’s kinda small for it’s skin….

Yeah. Right. Exactly what we said. Letter openers.

Once again… it wouldn’t be taking ANYTHING away from the people who like huge weapons. All we ask is a couple of sets that are more reasonable. Nobody gets hurt. There’s no reason to object when nobody is losing anything.

Heck, sell a Weapon Size Changer in the Gem Store and milk us for it. Just give the people CHOICES, please.

What’s the objection to a COUPLE of “realistic” sized choices for people who like that? It’s not like we’re asking to take anything away from you. Didn’t your Mother teach you to share?
