NPC Ranger in GW1 Mesmer Armor?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

Here is Reanna the Hunter from Snowden Drifts (she’s the tall one in the foreground).

I can’t find her armor anyplace. Not amongst the Medium OR Light armors. It certainly looks like Guild Wars 1 Mesmer armor to me. Anyone else think they need to add this to the game? (To the LIGHT armors, not the Medium armors, although Reanna is a Ranger. What the female Rangers need is Guild Wars 1 Elite Druid’s armor. And NO MORE TRENCHCOATS!) Reanna runs around and fights, so I imagine any clipping issues are mostly addressed.

Yes, a kitten-sized kitten. The current gem store offering is the same size as my Hall of Monuments Tabby Cat (which I used to regard as a little oversized). And the HUGE HEAD! (The Black Bear Cub isn’t proportional either… looks more like a piglet).

I prefer minis that look like young animals for the most part. I would like my Ranger to have a “young pal” for each of his animal companions. Mini people are just plain weird.

I had the “Spark” air elemental when it was a cool, floating ball of energy. I sold it when they turned it into a crawling bug thing. Oop! Ack! Thpppt!

Soooooo…. you’re complaining that you can get your reward in one day when it may take others a month to earn the same reward?

I can do most of them pretty easily too, but that 500 salvages (to me) takes awhile. I’d just like to see some variety. They had most of these last month.

There are a ton of activities you can do. If you like long term stuff, go after specific titles. You don’t often get any sort of monetary reward, but unlike the Monthlies you can get a reward that you can show off. Or if you just want a long-term goal, go for GIANT SLAYER. 1000 visits to Nageling. Yay!

My Warrior has had the Hall of Monuments “Fire God’s Vambraces” (flaming gloves) since day one. For the longest time I thought that was some sort of “ashes” particle effect animation from the gloves. If I am actually farting fiery bubbles then I don’t need to have a signet active to be enraged.

Turn off your EMOTES chat. I have never been able to stomach them all the way back through GW1 where at least we had a nice variety of emotes available.

I am a GW2 “photographer”. I often have my toon perform an emote over and over until I capture them in just the right pose. Even your person doing “/sit” over and over might be trying to catch their toon in a position halfway through the sitting-down animation. Or maybe they were trying to center themselves on a chair and had to keep making small adjustments.

Or maybe he was being a jerk.

But it is so simple to just turn off your emote chat. You won’t miss anything new.

I dunno… I was in a low level zone today with a level 80 who used to pretty much ignore bad guys pecking at him. All of a sudden I am taking enough damage that I have to respond to attackers eventually, and don’t appear to be hurting them as swiftly as I used to. Purely a subjective observation, but is sure seems like they did SOMETHING. (Yeah, I still roll over them, but not nearly as blatantly.)

An option to disable right click targeting

in Suggestions

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

Disabling right-click to attack/interact is certainly the safest first approach to this issue. There are two problems, though. Anytime you have camera-look and targeting on the same input, you will have conflicting behavior. There isn’t a bug that targets are randomly selected, but rather the game trying to be smart at recognizing clicks versus camera movement. Even when you think you’re perfectly clicking on a target, most of the time you’re also moving the camera a tiny, tiny bit. There is a small threshold that determines whether your tiny movement should actually be a target selection. Lowering this threshold will reduce the chances of this happening, but is one of those numbers where we need to sit on it for a while to see if it ‘feels right’. The problem could also be solved by completely separating the different functionality of selection, auto-attacking, and camera movement. However, completely splitting those is not something we’re prepared to work on at the moment as it is a much broader-reaching change. I hope this helps clear up what’s happening and what steps we’ll take to change it. Thank you again for all the feedback!

First of all, thank you for this message. I think most of us can understand that with the current code there is a threshold that determines if a tiny movement is intended to be camera movement or a selection. Instead of trying to determine what this value should be, I would suggest giving us a slider to tweak this because there is no way you can figure out what value ‘feels right’ for everyone, just like there is no way you figure out what mouse speed will work for everyone. You might also let the slider go all the way to zero which would effectively turn off selection and be camera movement only. I honestly think this would be the most elegant approach with the least amount of code change that everyone can adjust to the way they like.

Slider. Absolutely. Everyone wins. Please implement as quickly as you jumped on the Consortium Sickle issue. Or is this on the back burner because you can’t figure out how to charge us 800 gems for it? (Sorry. Is my frustration showing?)

The little things

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

This is a very little, and incredibly simple thing to implement, but it would be a HUGE benefit to me. I have been calling for it ever since they removed my beloved compass during the betas.

Put ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS on the rotating mini-map, please!

So easy to do. The teeny-tiny N is very little help as-is. It gets buried under storyline stars, event markers, etc. It gets easily lost, and consequently so do I.

Use all four directions, double the current size, and make them always-on-top of the other map-edge clutter.

And before someone tells me to switch to the static “North-is-always-up” map, believe me I have tried. But I have used rotating maps/compasses forever in flight sims, shooters, etc. Even my car GPS is set to rotating style. I just can’t get used to a static map.

Besides, this won’t affect the static map users in the least, since they don’t have direction indicators and don’t need them. I DO need them.

Would you program it so the H key opens both the player’s hero panel AND their inventory at the same time? Of course not! That would be ridiculous, right?

Eh, uh… (embarrassed squirming) … well, not really. First thing I did was program a mouse key to toggle both my Hero Panel and my Inventory simultaneously because I was used to having all that info on the screen at once in GW1. But at least it was under my control to do if I wanted to. We aren’t given a choice on how we target; one of the most important functions of the game.

OPTIONS! Everyone is different. Give us the OPTION to disable right-click targeting. That’s all we are asking. Then the devs can continue using it and the players can turn it off.

Waaaaaaay back in the early betas they were fine. Then around BWE2 or 3 they developed a HUGE side-to-side swing. Could’ve easily been mistaken for a windshield wiper.

Well they have tweaked her from time to time, and she’s better. But she still rocks unnaturally, and has occasionally looked kind of twitchy. The other humanoid females – the Sylvari and the Norn – are just fine.

Issues with Consortium Harvesting Sickle

in Last Stand at Southsun

Hamfast.8719

I’d like to see two things (though I am happy it is no longer swung like the pick).
1) Animation for water and growing vines increased. Right now it is barely seen, especially on bushes.
2) Reduce the handle size back to a one handed item. The sickle was increased in size from the original when it was swung like a pick because at first it was just floating. Now it is pick sized, but with the animation correction the handle needs shortened again.

And 3) FASTER! (Unless this has been fixed already.) I am still checking YouTube and the Forums before I commit to a Sickle. Latest video I could find seemed to take nearly TWICE as long as a normal sickle.

When #3 (and #2 would also be nice) are addressed, then I may buy several. I bought two Molten Picks for my two main characters, then grew to like another character a lot. I wish the Black Lion would locate another cache of those picks!

So how about an update? SEVERAL events have come and gone.

Level with us; we’re all big kids here. Is there some issue that would make it unwise to remove right-click targeting? Was the program written so poorly that removal of right-click targeting will upset a million other things? Is it a basic, core function that will require a major rewrite of the fundamental code to remove?

Hamfast.8719

Nice idea, I would like mounts in WvW though

I was about to say “Ehh… but then you’ll be able to ignore castle walls”. But then I remembered the focus of my own idea is a place for ANet to safely iron out the mechanics of flight (and flying combat) without impacting the rest of the world. So who knows? Maybe they’ll find a solution to that as well, and you’ll eventually have your wish.

All in all, though, I don’t expect to see flight enter the game in general until GW3. GW2 was not designed with that in mind. ANet should consider the Dominion of Winds an opportunity to beta-test the mechanics. A game within a game. (I have NO IDEA how City of Heroes worked flight – never played it.) But the community is here. Take advantage of it in a zone that doesn’t impact the rest of the world.

I used to play a lot of flight sims. I’m not picturing players hovering above, casting spells and shooting arrows every direction. I’m thinking constant jinking and movement to get your target in front of you. Seems to me that’d be easier to program and learn. (Your flight combat skill bar would be different with different mounts, just as when you pick up a different weapon. Maybe even a two-seater that WOULD allow return fire in other directions.)

It’s obvious, isn’t it? The PERFECT spot for mounts in the game: The Dominion of Winds. A whole region west of Lion’s Arch kept totally separate from the rest of the world. The Tengu bird-people are the keepers of this land. THIS is the slate upon which ANet can practice land and air mounted travel and even combat without mucking up the rest of the game.

No Asura have previously been allowed in, so there are no Asuran Gates or Waypoints. Jade and Amber Moas are used as land mounts to get swiftly from place to place. Other large winged creatures capable of flight carry people even farther and faster.

No jumping puzzles exist here yet because the land hasn’t been introduced into the game yet. So they won’t be ruined by flying critters capable of transporting their riders to the top. (If any are desired, ANet can put them inside caverns.)

This is an avian creature SANCTUARY, and every birdbrain here knows it. They will NOT exit the region. (If a character aims to fly over the wall, his mount veers away with an angry screech.)

A fine place for ANet to experiment and tweak. A big battle arena if they want to do that. (But don’t forget the leisurely explorers… maybe they can opt out like the Costume Brawlers leaving the game?) I’m sure ANet can come up with some sort of story background for any events they want to have there. Different Factions of Tengu warring in the skies? Who knows. But as a walled off, intentionally isolated area, the game designers could try things and change them with no consequences to the rest of the game world.

Then MAYBE, someday, when they feel comfortable enough with how mounts and flying mounts will interact with the rest of the gaming environment, they may even open the gates and let some escape into the world.

Problem solved. (Except perhaps for the issue of OVERFLOW servers in the Dominion of Winds).

(Moderators – please do NOT merge this with the thousands of other “I want mounts!” threads. I think you’ll agree that it stands on its own as a new, different of suggestion.)

I just went through the game updates since January (I didn’t go back any further) and each of them has bug fixes, improvements and polish. Among many other things, so I guess they try to do something to please just about everyone. =)

The problem is, so many “fixes” seem to bring more bugs. (For example, the Total Transformation Kit killed the glow on my Sylvari. They finally fixed it – after two attempts – but now she has “Lazy Eye”, a condition which hasn’t been addressed yet.)

PLEASE devote an update or two only to fixing bugs. LOTS of bugs. We know that you probably have a bug fix team that is completely separate from the Living Story team, and the many, many other teams. But when you proudly highlight and point to all the NEW stuff in a game update, that makes it seem like the REPAIRS aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

If you find the pets useless (Ranger pets OR Necro minions), what makes you think the AI for a Henchman will be any better?

Most people don’t have a problem soloing. Just stay in areas appropriate for your character level. Veterans ARE the tougher guys (more HEALTH anyway), and Champions ARE the toughest guys (very FEW players can defeat them singlehandedly).

If nobody is around when you see a Champion that you want to fight (or NEED to fight in order to get past him) try calling for assistance in Map Chat. Many times, especially if killing a Champion is one of the Daily Achievements, people will arrive shortly.

Also, (and I can’t stress this enough) keep your GEAR up-to-date! When it gets more than 10 levels behind you, things start to get tough. Visit the Black Lion Trading Post or the Weaponsmiths/Armorers and upgrade yourself! Don’t rely on monster drops to equip yourself. Very important that you not be running around in a Level 25-35 zone in your starting armor wielding a rusty sword.

You can also look for a Guild if you are the sociable type, and play with other people. You may lose a little freedom of where you want to go and what you want to do, but there’s strength in numbers. And you CAN still run around solo whenever you feel smothered.

And for what it’s worth, I PREFER the rifle for my Engineer. It’s all a matter of playing style. But they DO need a bigger weapon selection. Perhaps in some future add-on…

You CAN also get in or out with careful or creative jumping. Jumping OUT (straight over the glowing fence) seems easier for me. To get IN, I usually go to the top left (Northwest) entrance and jump up on the nearby lamp post (or whatever it is) to get a little elevation to jump up and inside.

Update: this seems to be only Risen Eagles. I exited the game and came back after an hour or so. I have had three more Risen Eagles do this to me since, also in Malchor’s Leap, but this time while assaulting the Cathedral of Eternal Radiance. Not ALL Eagles. Some are okay. But many that sparkle do no allow you to pick up the spoils.

It’s not JUST the Order of Whispers leggings. MANY combos on a female human that reveal the belly/back. Also the Norn female. Probably one of the oldest, most-reported graphical bugs I’ve seen. Here are some screen caps I made and posted long ago. Order of Whispers leggings are not amongst these, but yes, they ARE one of the worst offenders. PLEASE FIX!

Corpses "sparkling" but can't be looted

Malchor’s Leap (Borlis Pass) – Traveling from the passageway entrance on the left side of the Cathedral of Zephyrs, along the path up to the “Sculptor’s End” Point of Interest. I killed two Risen Eagles along the way that sparkled to indicate they had loot. But I never got the “[F] Search” prompt even when standing right on top of them. I will update if this happens with other monsters and/or in other areas. For now, just Risen Eagles in this particular area.

Remove WvW From Map Completion

I heard they are CONSIDERING rotating maps, regardless of color. That would help with almost everything except Stonemist Castle.

My server has been up against the same opponents for about 3 months now. And for 3 months the results have been the same. One server remains #1 by a good margin, and my server trades the #2 spot with the remaining opponent. I asked in WvW local, and was told we briefly held Stonemist TWICE that week.

What we need is better TEAM rotation. Their “modified Glicko ratings” aren’t working when the same teams always meet and the result is always the same.

I am not a WvWer either, but have managed World Completion with the exception of Stonemist Castle. So to a point it can be done by a patient PvEer solo. What we CAN’T do solo is capture Stonemist Castle. My whole server managed it twice in one week (briefly) with the “evenly matched” (HA!) teams set up by ANet. So don’t blame the PvEer’s for complaining when WvWer’s who are there all the time can rarely get the job done either. Blame the “Glicko ratings” that decide the matchups.

If I don’t want to be in WvW, and am not contributing to your battle, then YOU shouldn’t want me there either. I am taking up an opening that could better be used by someone who WANTS to play WvW. So don’t tell us to suck it up and try harder for those missing Map Completion points. JOIN US in demanding that ANet change things. It’ll make both of us happier.

Re-skin HoM weapons

Most of ‘em aren’t bad. DARKENED? The Fellblade, perhaps. It’s “supposed” to look kinda evil, hence the name. And it is BIG, but still not as ungainly huge as many others in this game. But most weapons in the game have dingy gray metal. Darned few have nice, shiny blades. I’m all for the shiny HoM axe. And why is the longbow gray? Most wood should be wood-colored I’m thinkin’. Gray wood is rotted. For the most part, the items that carried directly over from GW1 look pretty true though.

If anything, the armors are a bit of a disappointment for me. Don’t care for the light at all. The Medium would be nice except for the TAIL. WHY does everything in GW2 have to have a skirt or a tail? The Heavy Plate armor is real good. Almost ALL shoulder armors are WAY oversized.

But don’t look for them to change, or then there will be people crying in righteous outrage who DID like them as-as (and who ALSO put in a lot of effort). After all, looks are a matter of taste. In time, as they add more armor and weapons, there will hopefully be something out there for everybody.

Suggestion for KEEPING PETS STOWED

in Suggestions

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

Sometimes Rangers don’t want their pets following them around. Some hate the AI. Some want to keep them from accidentally aggroing. Some want them out of the way for jumping puzzles. Whatever the reason, the game doesn’t accommodate us. The moment we take a little bit of damage, out pops our buddy.

We SHOULD be able to put him away and KEEP him away if we want to. It shouldn’t require an extra check box or anything like that. Instead, just make him remain stowed if he was in “Avoid Combat” mode when the Ranger put him away. Since he has been commanded to avoid combat, then he shouldn’t pop out when his master takes damage. Only when his master calls for him again.

Remove Legendaries from Trading Post

in Suggestions

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

First of all, “Legendaries” are misnamed. They have no legend behind them. No past. They are made brand-new by players. They should be called “Sparkly Particle Effect, Crazy, Incredible, Amazing, Lovable Skins” (S.P.E.C.I.A.L.S.). But that’s beside the point.

Look at it from the other side. Why shouldn’t someone be allowed to sell his weapon for whatever reason? Maybe he decided after making it that he’d rather have money for something else. Maybe he made it in the first place just to make a buck (sacrilege!). Maybe someone who didn’t want to commit to the grind commissioned him to do it for him.

If your beef is that the person wielding a legendary weapon didn’t go through all the rigamarole involved in creating it, then that’s just your personal problem. I’m sure the seller charges a price that he feels justifies his hard work. And the buyer has somehow managed to accrue thousands of gold, which (to me anyway) is a legendary feat. So you can’t tell me that he hasn’t put in some hard work himself.

I am sure I will never have a legendary (most just don’t appeal to me). Whether they look good or not is just a personal opinion, but when I see someone with one then I know he put in a lot of time. Whether he made it himself, or did other things to earn the money to buy it on the Trading Post, he obviously put in a lot of time and effort doing SOMETHING. I can admire the dedication either way, even if I don’t personally admire the weapon.

Make dungeons easier. And add a hard mode.

I can see the point of this, but at the same time the dungeons are supposed to be Guild Wars 2 version of hardcore content

Well if that’s true, it kinda sucks since EVERYTHING ends in a Dungeon. (Halloween, the Karka Invasion, Wintersday, The Super Adventure Box, Flame and Frost, and even my Personal Story.) So is everyone expected to be hardcore?

Just scale the difficulty to the number of players like everything else.

Dungeons not for casual fun?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

“Casual” has no strict definition, but I play every day for several hours. I consider myself above average in that I am a PLANNER. I spend a good deal of time out-of-game questing for answers to my GW2 questions, and more time tweaking my characters before I set foot out of town. My main(s) are fully exotic-equipped level 80s who can handle their own easily enough in most PvE situations, and I have proven victorious better than half the time in the several instances where I ran up against a WvW Invader 1 vs 1. But I have yet to begin enjoying Dungeon content because it seems too hard.

I would dearly LOVE to be able to do Dungeons. Mainly because I’m a mix ‘n’ match Armor-holic and that is the only way to get certain pieces. But also because everything in GW2 ends in a Dungeon. EVERYTHING. Halloween ended in a Dungeon. The Karka content ended in a Dungeon. Wintersday ended in a Dungeon. The Super Adventure Box was a Dungeon. Flame and Frost ended in a Dungeon. Even my PERSONAL STORY ends in a Dungeon. So if I can’t do Dungeons, I’m pretty much outta luck. I see the buildup of a story, and never get to experience the end.

So why can’t I do Dungeons? It seems to me that Dungeons are designed to be something that kills you again and again until you “learn the ropes”. I understand that, and am willing to take my lumps while I learn. School of Hard Knocks, and all that. (Some people just may not want to pay the price, Diva… perhaps that is why your friends didn’t want to do the Molten Weapon Facility. It can be frustrating dying all the time for little reward in sight.) Then (I assume) after I get to know the ins-and-outs of a Dungeon, I will be able to buckle down and enjoy it.

My problem is that I can’t get that much-needed initial experience. First and foremost, I am part of a tiny Guild of real-life friends, and it is hard to get all of us online at the same time to scrape up a party of 5. And playing with strangers is usually a drag. They are usually experienced, and want to run, run, run! I try to be “cool”; I skip cut scenes (but I WOULD like to see them at least once, to have some idea what the goal is), and I participate as best I can. But if I run, run, run it is hard to learn the tricks of a Dungeon because I’m so busy trying to keep up. And if I don’t, then I am afraid the more experienced folks will either kick me or leave themselves.

What we need (in my humble opinion) is DUNGEON SCALING to the number of party members. That way when just a couple of my Guildies are online, we could get experience, learn the Dungeon, and not be a hindrance when we DO join up with a full-sized party of more experienced players.

In the meantime, it would be nice to see people who are getting bored with the game step up and help out like Vayne. People in front of Dungeons offering their tutelage as party leaders to go slow, explain things, and be patient. (“Dungeon Master looking for students!”)

I feel I am a little more than “casual”, though by no means one of the “OMG this is soooo easy!” elite fanboy types. To me, the question of Dungeons being too hard comes down to my inability to get the needed experience to understand how each particular one should be tackled. I have the ambition (armor-holic / want to see how the stories end). I WANT to be able to do Dungeons, and understand there will be a learning curve for each one. I just don’t have a good avenue towards getting that education. And I can understand how the more causal amongst us just might not enjoy all the dying that an education usually entails. That’s possibly how your friends see it, Diva. If you have the manpower and patience to teach them, they might eventually learn to like it. As Vayne said, it’s hard until you know how to do it. But some folks will never like putting up with the “learning curve” part. You yourself admit you had fun until the part where you were dead 80% of the time.

Snow effects glitch in Dredgehaunt Cliffs

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

I am not in-game at the moment to go to that location, but I’m pretty sure that’s intentional. I don’t know what the reasoning is behind the lightning strikes in the middle of a snowstorm, but it doesn’t damage you and it’s a kinda cool effect. Maybe an NPC around there someplace alludes to it… I haven’t stopped to talk to anyone. Been around since the betas.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there were spots of heavier RAIN that included lightning strikes? Or better yet, if weather effects changed all over the world and not just in certain regions? Wouldn’t the occasional thunderstorm in LA be refreshing?
