The Warrior Meta Paradox

Hammerguard.9834

What kind of junk response is this? It’s a combination of Dogged March and food that makes it absurd. You could have easily replaced Dogged March with food in your little “experiment” and gotten the same results. You can’t tell me 33% isn’t as big a hit to condi duration as 40%. Secondly, you think any warrior in WvW cares that you’re a condi heavily specced into condi duration? How many of you are there? Do you plan on slowing the warriors down all by your lonesome?

As for the Engineer, yes, they’re mostly ranged but they don’t have anything near the base stats or mobility skills that a warrior has built in to help them with that fact that they’re mostly melee. A warrior has 7 movement skills while an engineer has 3. Warriors also have more health and more armor than engineers. So is it fair that warriors get a better version of Leg Mods for cheaper? No.

I’ve slowed many Warriors down all by my lonesome. Unless they have Zerker Stance up, or run a useless Sword+Warhorn/GS build, odds are they can’t get away.

And do you start designing traits around what food exists, or should you design food around how the classes can build? My initial comparison was taking the game without food, because food is a buff that means nothing towards balance.

And where is slowing down a Warrior an issue? WvW.

Where isn’t it an issue? sPvP.

What doesn’t exist in sPvP? Food.

Why? Because it has nothing to do with class balance, it’s just there for your character to feel even stronger with PvE-style buffs.

That’s why I left it out. Also, your comments around Engi make me think you’re one of the people who say “Warriors get both the highest base health AND the highest base toughness? Imba.”. I think it’s perfectly fair that a Warrior gets Leg Mods for cheaper.

And I don’t take part in Class Pity Parties. Doing trait comparisons like that is a complete and total waste of time. It reminds me of when Necros complained about Incendiary Powder being the same as Dhuumfire for cheaper. Different class. Deal with it.

Tell me why it’s always the warrior that comes up when talking about mobility nerfs, genius? Did you forget that every class has access to the same foods? Take out food entirely and warrior still wins.

sPvP is a completely different beast where the focus lies in being able to stay in the fight and take out the enemies for capture points. Nobody cares if a warrior runs away in sPvP because it’s does them little good. If it did, they’d be a target for mobility nerfs there as well.

And guess what happened when engineers and necros had the same trait on different tiers? They were both changed. Expect the same of Leg Mods/Dogged March.

The first step should be to reduce mobility strictly to engaging capability. The warrior is a melee archetype and needs means to keep close to his opponent. However, as of now, warrs can engage/disengage freely and better than many thief builds. I don’t think the Hit&Run gameplay fits the class.

One of the reasons warrior is so good at hit and run is because of their ability to reduce the duration of cripple, chill, and immobilize down by 98%. They would literally be getting nowhere otherwise.

And that, folks, is the fault of the food. Not the Warrior class.

Uh, no. Although condi duration food is broke as kittens, condi duration food + rune of melandrus gets warriors to a 65% decrease in condi duration for all conditions, then dogged march (warrior trait) brings warriors to a 98% duration decrease in cripple, chill, and immobilize while maintaining a 65% duration decrease in all other conditions.

EDIT: Fun fact; Dogged March (Warrior Adept Trait): 33% reduced duration to cripple, chill, and immobilize and regeneration when affected by one. Leg Mods (Engineer Master Trait): 33% reduced duration to cripple, chill, and immobilize… brilliant.

Without the food, Warriors can sit at -58% condi duration for cripple, chill, immob. I, for example, have 30% condi duration from traits and 10% condi duration from runes (to work against Melandru), leaving me at +40% condi duration. The net that a Warrior specced anti-condi duration against me for cripple, chill, and immob is -18%.

So a 5 second chill lasts 4.1 seconds. Considering how devastating chill/cripple/immob are to a Warrior, this feels about right to me. I still get duration, but the Warrior dedicated runes and traits to knocking it down, so that’s where I feel it should land.

Enter: Food. If I don’t use +40% duration food, the net is now -58%. For those playing the home game, that’s 3.2 times the reduction they would otherwise get without food. Now that 5 second chill is lasting 2.1 seconds, a full 2 seconds less than without food.

That adds up. And it’s primarily the fault of food.

I don’t need your anti-Warrior propaganda. I’ve crunched the numbers, and the real outlier is food in a WvW setting. Also, your fun fact proves nothing, which someone has already pointed out. An Engineer can still be doing damage at range with these control effects on them. A Warrior is often completely hosed if they are being kited with Chill/Cripple/Immob. If you don’t realize that, then you’ve very clearly never played one, especially not back before Cleansing Ire/the Zerker Stance change. I don’t even think Dogged March was a thing back then, but I could be misremembering.

Hammerguard.9834

Problem is any ranger trying to maximize his usefulness in a zerg is absolutely trash in a 1v1 scenario, so they’re just food for thieves or other roamers in 1v1 builds while they are out of the zerg.

This is very true. You could say it about any class but Rangers suffer the most. They have very poor versatility in their utilities and weapon skills.

Hammerguard.9834

The problem is that most rangers use bad builds in WvW and refuse to drop the bear and the longbow. Well a lot of people use bad builds in wvw but rangers have the worst of bad builds.

Zerker/PVT bearbow is like the easiest thing to kill.

You think it’s the players fault when they really have no other options. Longbow is without a doubt the best WvW weapon Rangers have and the pet choice doesn’t even matter much in zerg play.

I hate how everyone blames Rangers on bearbow when it’s just not true.

I never expected it to work with Barrage or Poison Volley. Everything else if fine though as long as the effect isn’t some huge fire explosion rather than a small shockwave.

I also never thought it could allow for AoE conditions but I don’t really see it being a problem either way. Last time I tried shortbow as a condi weapon, it was absolutely terrible. I’m sure most condi rangers would prefer sword, axe, torch, and dagger with traps.

We shouldn’t be concerning ourselves with the specifics. I just want Anet to acknowledge the idea. It’s something that can really make Rangers part of WvW instead of the laughing stock.

“100% proc trait would be a bit too much.” Everything in the game can be balanced whether it activates on hit or on crit. You want to establish the concept and balance from there.

EDIT: I also want to add; your version of the trait is incredibly boring. Your just killing the whole idea. How I imagined it would function is: on hit, no internal cooldown (my biggest issue with your concept), 240 radius, and I’m thinking 25% damage done to main target is done to surrounding targets in range (3 target limit).

This is probably a bit much for Anet but a good starting point.

To be honest my only consern on the matter is the fact rangers have a trait that makes arrows pierce and the fact you want the trait to be on hit with 100% proc chance (as far as I understand what you want), which could make it a bit too strong situational.

Other than that it could be interesting skill for a ranger and the more I think about it would fit them better as an utility skill than a trait.

A utility skill would need to work with every weapon. This is specifically for bows.

Give Rangers Ignite Arrow from GW1 as a trait in GW2. It would really help with their AoE problem while also keeping them single target focused which is what I think Anet intends them to be. Not that I’m asking for it to replace Read the Wind but I think Ignite Arrow would be more useful as well as fun.

If there is a problem I personally understand the complexities of computer software and there being an issue… however it hard for me to see what the issue is exactly. They have just said they “identified the issue” … which generally means they know what went wrong… and that means they have an idea of how to fix it.

I am sure they have database snapshots to show who was on what server at the end of the tournament. They have records showing who completed the meta. It should be dead simple to send out a new set of tickets. Even if they can’t identify who already received them, just make a new token and remove the old ones. Is there some other complexity that I am missing?

Customers being left in the dark like this makes Anet look kind of incompetent even though they clearly are not for making such an incredible game, but the impression it leaves is rather disturbing. I think if the problem was a bit more clearly explained people would be more willing to give Anet time to deal with the problem.

Well resolving the issue that way should be incredibly easy but it would also be kind of embarrassing don’t you think? Taking over a week to find out how to identify who hasn’t gotten tickets, then just scrapping them because it was too hard or took too long.

Removing Pets isn't the answer.

Hammerguard.9834

All the situations you talk about are full offense; Full zerker, strongest pet, when you fail to mention that you’re sacrificing any form of AoE or survivability in which case, yes, the pet should absolutely be doing absurdly good damage. If a persons literally able to walk to remove 50% or more of the damage a pet provides, there’s a serious problem.

I also fail to see how the players choice of weapon should have any effect on the pet choice or pet effectiveness. Logically there’s nothing that support this, and from a game design standpoint it’s 100% incorrect. The weapon changes nothing in how effective the pet is in reaching and dealing damage to the target. I’ve had plenty of cases where I’d be chasing a target and my pet is just running along behind me, longbow or greatsword. The pet doesn’t just magically appear on the targets kitten if I leap over to them. It’s also worth mentioning, greatsword is the only real gap closer ranger have, and by your logic greatsword is the only weapon where rangers should be using melee pets.

I see so many people asking for pets to be optional or completely removed from Rangers when a better solution would be making pets good. Pets are non-threatening and that’s the main problem. Send a pet after a real player and all they need to do is walk to be able to reduce the pets damage by 50% or more. Pet are slow, their movement speed is slow and their skill have too long a cast time and are way too small scale. Get pets to be something a player might actually fear and I think they would be in a much better state than they are now.
