New Party Kicking Mechanic is Unfair!

A majority vote is actually pretty fair. If you don’t want that to happen, then invite two friends to come along with you so that they can never get three votes.

The real problem here is that dungeons are badly designed. Players should always get rewarded whether they completely finish a dungeon or not, based upon how much progress they made through the dungeon. In other words, it should be a guaranteed reward based upon damage taken, damage dealt, support level (damage mitigated/healed on allies), mobs killed, bosses killed, and areas cleared.

NOT skip all mobs, cheese all encounters and get the prize.

But ArenaNet will never implement such a system because they don’t know how to balance it so that it doesn’t get abused. So they just avoid it instead.

[suggestion] combat off weapon swap

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think you’re looking for the wrong feature.

What we actually need is a way to use inventory items without bringing up the inventory window. Most games solve this by allowing you to place items (such as weapons!) directly on your spellbar, however GW2 does not allow this, nor have enough free slots on the pathetically small spellbar due to its “simplified” UI.

As each year passes, games get fewer and fewer buttons to press.

And with how bulky the main HUD is due to everything being lopped together into a single area (so they can waste the rest of the screen on things that people don’t pay much attention to, like tournament announcements), I don’t see them being able to make room for anything more unless they build it up vertically.

My preference would be to split the spellbar into two rows, allow the buttons to be moved around and keybinded, and inventory items slotted in.

But I’ll keep dreaming for any kind of real UI customization in this game!

Female Asura's carapace butterfly shoulders!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think that the cultural taboo no longer applies as strongly as it used to. Over the past few years the Asura have clearly inherited alot of influence from the other races, as you can see with the additions to their makeover kits, which have them looking more feminine than ever (yes even the males).

This is not too suprising since if you’re familiar with lore as far as we know the Asura do not actually have hair and wear wigs to “fit in” with the other races.

Its also a common misconception that all Asura are smart and build things, otherwise the Vigil would not have any Asura in it.

Uping dificulty to diversify builds is a trap

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

I find that builds that are half way between damage and defense and tend to combine conditions with autohits work relatively well to survive and do damage in all content (especially WvW and Silverwastes). You do not need berserker gear, nor do you need nomads or PVT gear. There are other options, many different combinations that produce pretty good results (even celestial if used properly).

I think the point of zerker armor is not that defensive armor doesn’t work, it’s that there is no need for it.

Who cares if you have 50k toughness and 500k Health. If you play the game well it doesn’t matter if you have 20 health or 20,000 health because you can use active defenses to ignore ALL damage.

Once you are good enough at the game the only difference between full defensive armor and zerker armor is that things take 100x longer to die.

The best way to learn the game is to put on zerker armor and make yourself learn it.

The other armor types function just fine, they are just not needed.

Between worst gear set (nomads) and best gear set (berserker) it takes only 2.5x as long for enemies to die and that is assuming that you use no conditions and every person in your party is wearing the worst possible gear. You also lose some DPS while dodging and during many other “active defense” moves.

Zergs out of control?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

When I first started playing this game two years ago, the average number of players that you would expect to meet in a PvE map was maybe 10-15 at a world boss and if you went to WvW then you would see a zerg of maybe 50 players.

These numbers have slowly increased over the years. These days at a world boss it is not uncommon to see an entire map’s population there (something like several hundred players minimum) and WvW zergs tend to be of similar size on T1.

I know that zergs occur in all games, however it feels like Anet has done absolutely nothing to curb the tendancy to ball into huge zergs for all content. In fact, I would say that everything they have done since release , such as living world, megaserver, map event dailies and Silverwastes have just asked more and more people to all gather into a single location for a part of the game.

My issue with this is it seems to completely break the mechanics of the game. For those of us old enough to remember, the game was highly balanced at 5-10 players (25 max). But due to issues with downscaling, poor event scaling, etc. zergs have rendered all existing content completely trivial and less than 1% of a challenge.

There’s also the fact that this game engine is aging and yet Anet seems to ignore this, constantly pushing more intensive content that even larger zergs can participate in (rather than more solo or party content). I remember a time when world events demanded strategy discussion in local chat, and these days the only kind of discussion I ever see in local chat at world events is how low everyone’s FPS is, how much they are lagging and how they can barely move or use any skills.

I am really wondering where the game is headed and if HoT will be even worse…

SILVERWASTES & Mordrem - What works for YOU?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

I run my Engi as Celestial with 100% condition duration (tree/food/giver’s weapons/malice). Combine this with a full p/p+grenade+bomb build with power tree maxed and you are doing good autohits, 20 stack AoE bleed, 25 vulnerability and alot more if you swap out your kits enough to use all the conditions.

Zero threat from any Mordrem. Remember that Cripple stops the Teragriffs from doing their charge which is the only real problem there.

I find that my condition builds do better than my berserker builds in SW. Even though people swear by zerker, some of the mobs there are just very hard to take down with direct damage and the time taken can outstrip your heals and dodges. This is in contrast with the rest of the game where mobs die easily to zerker.

If you want to do full zerk, make sure you kill all Menders asap.

I strongly recommend against using Sentinel gear. The damage is extremely low and increasing your vitality just makes you that much harder to heal. One of Engi’s best traits is their bust healing so they benefit more from high toughness.

They probably don’t plan to do any of this. That’s why they came up with Mordremoth, a “super dragon” with a reach far beyond that of any other dragon, and a power that is far more dangerous (corrupting the Pale Tree/Sylvari).

Zhaitan, especially, was small beans in comparison.

Winterday Feedback [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hannelore.8153

Last year I got the rewards because dailies contributed to the meta. This year I cannot get the upgraded title (to the one I had), and a second mini (to compliment the one that I already had), just because they changed the daily system.

And somehow this all makes me lack skill and I should be punished for that? Because there is something invalid about wanting to ascend to another tier of something that you had already completed the year before.

PROBLEM: Broken dailies. SOLUTION: Shun everyone without “skill”.

Such wisdom from this forum lately!

New player, no outfit change while leveling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

In this game, unlike most other games, armor apperance is connected to the quality and level of the armor, not just the level. if you go through all of your levels wearing just the same white quality armor, it is going to look exactly the same.

If you want different looks, buy armor from karma (heart NPCs), purchase Fine (blue) or higher quality armor off of the trading post, or use the wardrobe.

Character customization is mostly the end-game of Guild Wars 2, so you won’t be able to do much of it while levelling. Levelling is mostly about exploring the world, getting familiar with your class and playing through the story. Then once you reach the max level you can start working on exquisite looks, builds and gear.

Philosophy Shift to Less Choice

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

IMO, the new dailies suck for several reasons:

1) Newbies cannot do them. There is generally only one daily that can be done by a newbie without resorting to PvP/WvW, and characters below level 18 and 22 will not be able to see the PvP/WvW icons or know to go to Lion’s Arch.

2) What was previously a system that encouraged to enjoy parts of the game you normally wouldn’t, is now a grind, because you have to do certain things in certain places. To put this more simply, watching ten vistas anywhere would’ve been more fun than watching one vista in a specific map. At the moment, it feels like nothing more than a sink for a bit of silver from waypointing around.

3) They have added yet more psuedo-loot – rewards that were already part of the game but were changed from automatic to now requiring you to click things. Just what we needed, more junk on our already overflowing characters and banks. In theory, this lets us use the experience and other rewards on any character, but in reality the boost that it gives is way too low to matter.

I personally used dailies as a form of map completion incentive. I would go where I wanted to go and do what I wanted to do, while completing them.

Overall, I see the new daily system as just like every other system Anet has implemted: Very good idea on paper and very poor implementation. Just like everything else, such as megaserver and world boss timers, they seem to’ve stopped development on the feature about halfway through and released an unfinished product that did not have the thought and polish of a proper QA team or any actual players.

Please stop making “paper” changes. It is hurting the game’s presentation because we keep ending up with these complex interlocking systems that don’t quite want to snap into place and become an actual thing.

Newbies get different dailies than we do. For example, when the daily was Iron Marches events, my wife’s new account got Queensdale events.

You’re confusing newbie with new account. Newbie is any character that is in the low levels, while new accounts are players who are fresh to the game. Someone who has five lv80s but makes a new class they haven’t played before is still a newbie, even though they know the basic game mechanics, playing that class will be very difficult until they learn it, and their character will not have access to level, skill, trait, and food benefits that their already-established characters do.

The only thing that a new character can do that a new account cannot is go to PvP and WvW for those dailies that do not involve PvE. Therefor, for the large majority of dailies they are simply forced to switch to established characters to do them. This goes completely against the fact that people may have many characters.

I wonder how you will take your lv10 Ranger to Bloodtide Coast.

Did you know that dailies encompass some peoples’ entire playtime? That means that they never get a chance to play any new characters, due to work, etc.

Yes I would complain;

1) Broken Personal Story.
2) Missing Living Story season 1 that did not return in any form.
3) Pretty good season 2 that you cannot properly understand as a new player due to a huge gap beteween broken PS and the LS2 episodes.

And that’s just the tip of the iceburg. Updates have broken the game more than they have fixed it because ANet keeps stopping halfway on anything good.

As it stands, all added content would make for a poor expansion.

PSA Staff Guardians in the Silverwastes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thank you kind sir. You have informed me that I should stop running around with my speed and loot weapon in open world, on a slow (mostly) melee class, to farm a small, chaotic map where events come and go in the blink of an eye.

-

Just for reference, many Guardians use burning for damage, not direct damage, so the Staff will have the highest chances of proccing upgraded Virtue of Justice. There is absolutely no requirement in open world to rely on direct damage, to run around in Berserker, Assassin or Rampager builds, and to use optimal weapons.

People play in the way that is easiest for them. It is not hurting you. Any pain that you feel as a result of their playing style is a placebo effect.

Between this and bell choir elitism, I have now seen it all …

Suggestion: Remove starter zone daily events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

I have a radical suggestion.

How about instead properly balancing lv80s in downlevelled zones?

Absolutely crazy, huh?

Despite being a good idea, that actually doesn’t fix anything. Higher level zones like Orr scale really well to more players. Caledon doesn’t scale at all, so 40 players running over the mushroom heart to do the drake quest still breaks everything. And even if they were proportionally scaled, a large mass of max attribute level 5s are still going to outdamage a new character not wearing shoulder armor or gloves or trinkets badly enough that everything is for naught anyway. Not to mention the fact that none of this makes for a fun heart completion when a zerg rolls over your intended “1v1” versus the spider.

Not having armor on a new character is a visual effect only. If you aren’t able to equip something, you still gain the equivalent armor points from it until the time when you are able to equip it. I recommend doing some wiki reading.

The event scaling is an issue, yes. And gear and trait scaling is a problem of the downlevel system being broken. Despite replying to my post with a good intent, you seem to’ve missed the point that this thread is trying to throw a semitruck at a pothole just because it can’t get over it in a normal car.

As for zergs, that’s megaserver. They will always be there until ArenaNet reduces the maximum population of maps according to their sustainable limits.

I, and many others, outlined the whole problem in my old thread:

Why should those who know how to play and never die be forced to wait 3 minutes each run just because the noobs keep dying.

Anet should make this game an elimination game those who do not die should continue playing and those who die should be eliminated from the game.

Another option is to rank the players and put them in groups who know how to play.

The game is for musically inclined individuals and those who do not know how to play just press all the keys making an obnoxious sound.

please fix this!

Asking for people to get auto-kicked so that they can’t even have time to learn the activity is possibly the most selfish thing I have ever seen requested.

The most recent stories have been far better than LS1 or Personal Story.

You can definitely tell that the writers for GW2 are not the same writers A-Net had for GW. The stories in GW were just written much better. I think the writers are even different when you look at the early Personal Story(levels 1-30) and the story once you choose your faction(Priory/Whispers/Vigil).

The most recent chapter has the same story manager as GW1.

Posters come to the rescue pointing out that it’s a L2P issue and OP needs to get good.

Today I learned: Being annoyed is a skill issue. I have heard of anger management classes. Is there such a thing as annoyance classes? I guess I better go take some, so that I can get more skilled at not being annoyed.

I will say this quite clearly in a way that is easy to understand…
They are trying to kill you.

If you don’t want to be annoyed, don’t play games. Because the goal of enemies in every game is to make sure that you die and cannot continue, at least not without some amount of rage and frustration if you can’t stay level-headed.

OP reminds me of those kids who throw Nintendo controllers at the TV.

Finishers - Immune/Invisible

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hannelore.8153

The problem with the posts above mine is that player seem to have a lack of understanding of the fact that the game is balanced around the downed state. It is not something that is just “tacked on”, the balance in both PvE and PvP is molded around the fact that you can go down and have a good chance to get back up.

If you think that the “up” state in this game is anything compared to other PvP games, you are being silly because players are made of explodium in this game even in full PVT gear and even on bunker builds all it takes is one rogue poison or immob.

Long, drawn-out battles are usually between two bunkers, with both of them doing almost no damage and having too much defense to overcome with said amounts of damage in any reasonable amount of time, if at all.

And these battles largely only exist due to capture-based gameplay. If the gameplay was not centered around capturing objectives, people would not bother attempting to bunker their way through everything and would just all go DPS.

Not to mention that in most games you can be insta-rezzed, whereas in this game your entire party has to put themselves at risk to do it…

Guys, the game is too hard. Lets make it easier.

Is it already not enough that any player with half-decent gear and skill can run around in the open world for an entire day with zero threat to themselves?

Let’s just remove all skills, players and mobs just get an autoattack!

This article makes a lot of sweeping claims and reads like something I would’ve written in 5th grade. Keep in mind that Season 1, while it had 20 LS episodes, took place over 1 and a half years. In comparison Season 2’s projected 9 episodes will take place over a period of 6 months.

The real problem with Season 2 is that Anet seems to have forgotten the multiplayer aspect of their MMO, pushing most of the LS content into single player instances. Dry Top is the open-world component of LS this season, but I find it entirely lackluster, especially in comparison to events like the Marionette, Tower of Nightmares, and Escape from LA.

First of all, you insult an article from a site that reviews MMOs for a living. And not just GW2, but dozens of MMOs beyond that. You must realize that GW2 is a small boat in a sea of games, although it is one of the most popular.

I’ve seen their reviews for other games as I played them, and the developers usually raged against it instead of accepting the critism of an outside reviewer. Of course, ArenaNet will just ignore it instead, because that is their style.

Second, what 9 epsiodes over a period of six months? Maybe if you count the entire time that content is released collapsed into a single unit. But in reality, all of those releases are radically spread out, with little inbetween except a few feature packs that received more complaints than acclaim, for easy-to-fix reasons that have simply not been fixed for unknown reasons that ArenaNet will not reveal due to policy.

Try to think about how it all looks from the outside. Imagine being a new player to the game, finding out that everything that people experienced in the game in the first year is no longer available and that it is just the tip of the iceburg of bad decisions made on this game that have yet to be rectified. Then imagine that on top of that you find out that when the company finally starts fixing things, they do it by starting to make everything the same and resorting to copy&paste.

The second year of the game has not been what everyone expected it to be. We expected solutions to problems, not just a different set of problems.

In a way, it is just more of the same …

Since many people who are active on the forums don’t really read reddit, I thought I’d
post this here for anyone interested: http://www.tentonhammer.com/editorial/more-same-guild-wars-2

It basically highlights what most people here post on a daily basis: Overall good quality
of content but complete lack in terms of quantity .
I personally feel really let down by the ‘only 4-5 releases left this year’ statement.
Compared to the claim of ‘every two weeks’ this seems like a rather bad joke :/

I don’t recall anyone stating you would have fresh, new content every two weeks. That is quite a bit different than an update, some have content, some do not. The one’s that don’t generally contain bug fixes, skill tweaks, tool tip tweaks, etc.

Compared to season one, the release schedules in season two are a joke. The most massive breaks we have ever seen, and the least amount of conrtent.

During my first year in the game, I don’t remember ever catching a break. If it wasn’t a content update they were changing some class balance, or running a festival. I was constantly bouncing back and forth between one thing and the next – the living world was so hectic that I barely got a chance to do anything normal, like run dungeons, fractals of the mists, Orr temples or play around in WvW.

This year, I have just sat on my hands and exhausted all “normal” content due to having nothing to really do, even resorting to achivement grinding.

The content needed to be permanent, but maybe the cost was too high.

Let’s just fix more tooltips, eh?

Interface is way too small

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Oh god.

The interface is already overly large on the “Largest” setting in 1080p, which is seen as one of the more extreme resolutions and only the average for gamers. The average for “normal” users who just browse the web (mostly on laptops) is still 1366×768.

ArenaNet never expected someone to play on such a resolution.

Even if they add a larger setting for the UI, all of the icons for skills and whatnot will still be blurry because upscaling is as bad as downscaling. So only your world view would become sharper compared to playing in a lower resolution.

How do you handle your desktop? Its not scalable… :P

As you already noted in your post …

They said a long time ago they will not add anything that looks like Cantha, maybe because of political reasons. The Canthan district of Divinity’s Reach was removed before release and replaced with a giant hole (later the Crown Pavilion).

That said I really, really hope the Dominion of Winds appears soon! Mainly because the map space for their city and starter map is already present.

Wish there was a Healing Profession

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Just use an elementalist, camp water on staff. It has an extremely high HPS after the most recent updates to runes, sigils and traits. When properly built, they can restore around 3x the health of personal heals in the same amount of time in addition to the heals already being used by other players and blast finishers on water fields.

You don’t need max healing power (just ~1k of it will be enough), but you do need:
- Aquatic Benevolence (trait)
- Superior Sigil of Benevolence
- Superior Sigil of Water
- 6x Superior Rune of the Monk (Ascalon Catacombs)

The total healing output to allies is increased by 147.5% with a full stack. Using this combination I’ve been able to 2man dungeons with a berserker warrior with said warrior losing almost no health from anything just facetanking.

The HPS is higher than 25 stacks of bleed from Dredge boss in SE p3.

By my calculations proper use of water auto-attack, the sigil of water, Soothing Mist and Geyser will heal about 47K of health every 30 seconds, not counting the health output of the actual Regeneration boon from Healing Rain.

Keep in mind that this playstyle is not often welcome in PvE. It is however extremely welcome in the various PvP game modes (WvW and sPvP).

Before raids, any chance of a condition fix?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

This could be heavily mitigated by having mobs periodically remove 25 stacks of Bleeding on themselves and replacing with a single-stack condition of equal damage, that way you can stack up to 25 players on a single mob/boss.

For example: 25 Bleeding -> 1 Heavy Bleeding

It’s not a true fix, but it woudln’t exactly be hard to implement either, as it works on the same principle as all conversion skills in the game (e.g Well of Power).

Poison and Burning could additionally stack in intensity in PvE:
- 1 stack on normal mobs
- 5 stacks on Veterans, 10 stacks on Elites
- 15 stacks on Champions, 20 stacks on Legendary
- 25 stacks on Epic

throwing mobs from cliffs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Because the game has a bad AI that cannot compensate for it. That’s why all the other mob hacks such as Unshakeable, leash regen, etc. exist as well.

Leash regen is in place so people can’t glitch/exploit the mobs for free kills. Lots of games have leashing and regen typically follows with it.

I’ve never heard anyone refer to them as ‘mob hacks’, though. Underlying hatred for the mechanics, I detect.

They couldn’t be exploited if they had a proper AI. Almost all games that implement these preventions have a bad AI that is very similar to the one in GW2.

For example, if you cannot reach a mob, but can atttack it (e.g up a cliff), then the proper solution is to have the mob use a ranged attack, not be invulnerable, unless the invulnerability also came with some kind of visual status (i.e a shield).

This way of doing things only removes viable tactics from the players, and on top of that also makes the mobs appear dumb and unimaginative.

Then people wonder why all you can do is press 1111 half the time…

Its the simple truth that in the current implementation, mobs are hackers. Just because they are game objects and not people does not change that. They resist CC without the use of any skills, become invulnerable, port around, leash and reset, are immune to being knocked off of cliffs (a particular hazard to players), etc.

Its just a horrible departure from immersion when the player character exists in a world of what are obviously scripted objects and not “real” creatures or people. How are you supposed to take it all seriously when the same mechanics don’t even apply, and when the same tactics that are viable against sentient beings behind player characters are not viable against what are supposed to be sentient beings (in lore) behind NPCs?

And how many things in the game have been dumbed down to the point of appearing almost broken just to keep a small minority from exploting it?

There is always a better way to do something.

does GW2 have a future?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

I like how people act like the removal of an entire arc of the story was okay. Let’s be honest this game has been taking away content since day one. With everything they have added they have also removed something in kind. Its almost like they have some obsession with “making room” for new content, even though digital content does not work that way with the near-unlimited storage space and fast internet connections of the modern era (although it would’ve been a concern a decade ago).

In fact, these days removing content results in more storage and bandwidth overhead, due to the use of database-like virtual filesystems (that’s what the .dat is) which are optimized for insertion and not neccessarily removal, and the fact that anything that is significantly changed, such as a map, has to be redownloaded.

As others have said, you pass -bmp to the game to make lossless screenshots. Yes its true that this format is old, but that does not matter, any image program will open it and convert it to PNG (or higher quality JPG than the game produces).

High shaders light source

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Well, lets not wonder if it is a bug or not. The light makes hair look plastic in any case. We need better lighting.

I would prefer immersive environment: no artificial light sources, not even ambient lights. Just the natural light formation (radiosity, ambient occlusion, etc). Then as options, add extra features. Skyrim has a mod called face light and a mod which allows player to add lights to anywhere; they are used for screenshotting and for mod reviews.

In this game, I go close to light sources, like torches and fires. I equip a torch, or Cobalt, for better light. (Because I don’t use high shader setting.)

Has this game items which can be dropped to ground or table, and they light the environment? I like Cobalt, torches, because they light the environment, not all does that – does legendaries? Fiery greatsword that can be dropped to ground?

You can’t do real-time indirect lighting (e.g raytracing, radiosity, and similar) with the currently available computing power. The best you can do is screen space ambient occlusion, also known as SSAO or simply “ambient occlusion”.

The problem is it doesn’t quite do what you think it does. It is just a postprocessing filter that changes the contrast around objects in the scene, which makes it look like some light is spreading out and creating shadows from our POV.

This is what the “screen space” in the name actually means.

That is also why ANet takes this approach to try to give the illusion of natural lighting for something that is not yet possible. All high-intensity graphics games like Crysis actually use a combination of direct lighting and SSAO only.

It just looks like they are doing something more because of the level of effort put into creating the artistic illusion of real indirect lighting and shadowing.

To be fair, this game makes a far better attempt than most MMOs.
