The game have NEVER been advertised as Free to Play.
Yes it has, just not in that way (F2P). The game has always been advertised as being buy once, then free to play. They only meant that you would always be able to login to the game without having to pay more.
When you run Gw2Setup.exe, it should have had a big red install button on the launcher. In some cases, the login will be visible instead, but it won’t work.
Gw2Setup.exe downloads Gw2.exe to your %temp% folder and runs it from there. This is where it should ask you where to install it, but it might have simply installed it to that folder. All of the game’s data is stored in a single file named Gw2.dat. Try searching for it.
GW2 doesn’t actually need to be installed in the traditional sense. Simply rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and put it where you’d like to “install” the game. If you can find Gw2.dat, place it in the same folder as Gw2.exe. Those two files are the entire game.
Locate Gw2.exe. In the same folder should be Gw2.dat. Delete everything in that folder except Gw2.dat and Gw2.exe. Gw2.dat should only be around 20 GB. It’s possible for it to bloat, but it shouldn’t be a big difference.
Open the %temp% folder and delete every folder that begins with gw2cache. This is where the trading post cache is stored, which may be duplicated multiple times at a few hundred MB each.
Open the folder %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/ and look for the file Local.dat. Also check Documents/Guild Wars 2/ for the same file. There have been cases in the past where this file has bloated excessively. This file stores your settings that are related to your hardware, such as the graphics settings. If it’s over 100 MB, delete it.
“Few players”?! It’s literally been three seconds! Why would you put be on this map copy if you were just about to close it? Urgh.
If you waited ~10 minutes before clicking the button, you wouldn’t have that problem. Continuously getting the message is the result of overflows collapsing due to everyone leaving, such as when a world boss is complete.
From experience, I already know that trying to participate in a large event is nearly impossible because of how counter-intuitive megaservers are. Either players enter an infinite loop of closing map copies, or they are stuck in a map copy with not enough players to complete an event, and incoming players are sent to other, less populated map copies.
Don’t show up late? The first few instances have already killed the boss and started to leave.
There’s just no way that is possible.
It’s possible. The software controlling the instances would likely know how many there are but the game doesn’t need to know that information, so it might not be accessible. In order to provide that functionality, they would have to update their server software.
Laurels were designed to be a time gated system. Everyone is basically equal and ArenaNet knows how long something should take to acquire. You can however farm laurels by farming achievements.
The system is rather useless now however since they didn’t put a cap on it. Anything they add will simply be immediately purchased by veteran players, though it still has a time based value.
If laurels were farmable, you do realize what would happen right? The costs would increase so that the item remains balanced on taking a certain amount of time to acquire. Grinding is a time gate.
If they added new weapon types, they wouldn’t need to create level 1-79 skins if that weapon can only be used by a specialization that can only be gained at 80. It would however create more work when creating future skin sets.
First, if you’re running Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe and place it where’d you’d like to install the game, for example, C:\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe.
Assuming there’s something wrong with your local CDN server, right click Gw2.exe and create a shortcut. Right click the shortcut and select properties. Modify the shortcut’s target like this:
Target: “C:\ExamplePath\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -assetsrv 62.154.232.187:80
Here are some alternate servers you can try:
62.154.232.187:80
151.249.90.138:80
194.25.94.170:80
174.35.71.9:80
151.249.90.199:80
93.188.135.37:80
62.154.232.194:80
Run the game using the shortcut, which will forcibly change which CDN server you use.
If the problem is ISP related however, there’s not much you can do besides trying a different ISP. A VPN might work however.
If you could play with your friends in activities, you would likely have to wait quite a while to be matched against another team. If you’re just a casual group of friends, you’d likely be dominated by pros and end up giving up and going back to playing solo, which would be much faster. It would however be much easier to queue sync and win trade.
I’d like to think Anet wouldn’t do something like that, but…
No, that is what they would do. Everything has to be in balance. If they increased the cap and it caused an abnormality, they would just lower the drop rate to compensate. All future drops would be balanced around an assumption of the upper average amount of magic find.
In terms of gold per hour from drops, the playerbase as a whole will only be able to make what ArenaNet finds acceptable. Even if magic find suddenly became overpowered, everything else would change to compensate. What’s the point of turning exotics into rares if ascended just takes its place?
If ArenaNet wanted to do something, they could just uncap it and greatly increase the amount of luck required for each level, making it unrealistically achievable. Those foolish enough would no doubt complain about the years of hardcore grinding required however.
If I wanted to test your suggestion, how do I run the game with that option?
You can either create/edit a shortcut or open the folder where Gw2.exe and enter it directly into the address bar.
For example, let’s say Gw2.exe is located in the folder C:\Guild Wars 2\
If you create a shortcut to Gw2.exe, right click it and select properties, you’ll see the shortcut has:
Target: "C:\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe"
To add a command line parameter, you put them at the end, like this:
Target: "C:\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe" -clientport 80
For the other method, you can simply open a folder and enter it directly into the address bar like this:
C:\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe -clientport 80
This is just for testing purposes so you don’t have to bother with a shortcut.
If you want to try a VPN, use a free trial of one of the popular ones since they’re likely easier to setup.
can I make sure that it applies to any account that gets logged into on my computer?
Each shortcut used to open GW2 will have to be modified.
I recently saw something on here about saving separate logins with their own shortcuts and wanted to try that
That can be done using:
Gw2.exe -email your@email.com -password your_password -nopatchui
You will not be able to see the launcher by doing this however. If you use this, keep in mind that if there is a patch, it will download invisibly before starting the game.

If the lag problem is constant, it could be a problem with your hardware or corrupt/malicious software running on the computer. If you have multiple computers, it would be easiest to test them. If not, it would likely be faster to do a clean install of Windows, especially if you have a spare drive just for testing.
You may also want to try directly connecting your computer to your internet source without anything in between. If you have a modem/router combo and can’t directly connect to just the modem, disable any extra features the router may have. This is to simply rule out possible problems.

Manage what account? The GW1 or the GW2 account?
GW1 management was merged with GW2. If your account is not linked, you can login to GW2’s account management to see your GW1 account. Likewise, GW1 support is handled through GW2’s support.
If your GW1 account is linked to your GW2 account, you login to GW1 using your GW2 username/password. For the character name, you have to enter one of your GW1 characters. If you can’t remember a name, check your GW1 screenshots.
If your GW1 account is not linked, you login using your GW1 username/password. You can manage your account using account.guildwars2.com.
If you can’t remember enough details to login yourself, you will need to contact support using the option for GW1. Support for GW1 is very slow though.
Rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and move it to where you’d like to install it, for example:
C:\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe
I had pretty much the same problem happen to me a few weeks ago. Everything was fine except the ability to use skills. I then found that one of my computers was using all my available upload capacity, so although I could receive, I had trouble sending.
First, ensure that that’s not your problem.
Check your firewall/security software to ensure it’s not limiting you. Although you’re on the same computer, it should have had to request permission for Gw2.exe.
In case of simple ISP throttling, run the game with the option:
Gw2.exe -clientport 80
or
Gw2.exe -clientport 443
In case of advanced throttling, try running the game through a VPN.
So your cousin owns the account and you were playing on it?
Are you saying he took back the account? There’s nothing you can do. You basically got tricked into power leveling someone’s account. The best you can do is get the account banned for account sharing or try to trick your cousin – buy a new account, steal your stuff back.
Or are you saying the account was actually hacked? You should be able to recover the account by providing proof of ownership. You would need the serial key, access to the email and the registered personal information. Since you’ve probably already admitted to support that you were sharing the account however, it’s likely now flagged and recovering it is impossible.
In the future, it may behoove you to read the terms you agree to.
The original terms actually said:
(b) Each Account may only be used by one person. If a minor has been allowed access to an Account by his/her parents or legal guardians, only that minor may use the Account thereafter. You may not make any assignment or transfer of rights, obligations or liabilities related to this agreement and any attempt by You to do so is null and void. However, You may allow access to an Account to any family member who is living in Your household.

“Events can detect that players have not performed any actions relating to the event within a period of time and will scale down the event accordingly.”
Scaling worked differently a year ago. It used to scale as people actually joined, but large groups could exploit that. Now it assumes all nearby players are participating. It probably does eventually downscale for people that aren’t actually participating, but the problem is, how long does that take?
It’s not that hard to test if you can find a willing zerg to all tag and run, except 1 person. Unlike bosses, spawned adds however do not downscale.
A better question is “do you still get the rewards anyway if you WP”. If the answer is yes, those dead people should no doubt way point back.
Yes. Contribution is severely broken. Participate in the killing of a single mob and you’re done. Go AFK somewhere and enjoy your rewards. For single mob encounters, such as bosses, a single auto attack will do.
“nvidia geforce experience has encountered an error and must close” every freakin time..
I had a friend complain about the same thing. One day it just started happening.
… so I just took control of the computer and uninstalled it. Then I installed the drivers with the clean install option/clear settings, but it failed to install the GeForce experience due to already being installed (I didn’t reboot, which is probably why). So I downloaded that and installed it separately, then rebooted. Done.
Been trying to get the Silver&Gold and everytime failed because we didn’t have enough players, were like 6-7 at most.
fyi, 2 is enough. They’re all actually best done with less than 5 people, assuming offensive builds. For example, I’ve seen the teragriffs die in nearly a single bubble with only 3 people, taking maybe 2 minutes total.
I put up a lfg to sell a dusk for 1100g upfront and someone came in and said they reported me.
Next time put that you’re selling 1 spot for <insert group content>, 1100g.
* Free dusk included.
Why does everyone think this is OK?
Are you okay with having to pay for an expansion? What’s the difference? What if they held back everything in season 2 and released it all at once… as an expansion. That’s basically what HoT is, plus a few feature packs.
Unlocking the episodes was trivial. It takes under a minute to do and you have 2 weeks to do it. You can also automate the entire process with a very simple macro. Just use Windows scheduler to automatically login to GW2, then use a macro to login and exit. You can even setup your computer to automatically boot on a timer if you have to go on vacation or something. Unless you lose power/internet for over 2 weeks, there’s really no excuse.
Lastly, the episode model is based on TV. What happens when you miss an TV episode? Legitimately, you can pay to watch it online or wait for the DVD.
You can technically already PvP in PvE: Costume Brawl.
… and that’s how they would implement PvP in PvE if they ever actually did it. You would have to “flag” yourself, you would get an alternate PvP health bar that would take any PvP boons/conditions and it would end as soon as either you were defeated, entered PvE combat or pressed an “exit” button.
actually they can do something… yesterday lag for example was at ncsoft servers, it was only node where i had 100% packet los
Using your screenshot as an example:
You can’t judge a network solely by its ping. All a ping is really good for is checking if something is accessible and how long it takes. All those x/25 don’t really mean much because pings have a low priority and can be simply ignored, as seen with hop 9 and 11. Only dropping a few pings is more suspicious, but even then it could just be ping specific throttling rather than an overloaded router.
What you want to look at is the number next to the |. That shows a ping that was lost in between two hops – actual packet loss. Hop 6 to 7 doesn’t look too good, which is the EU-NA link.
But what if your pathping shows no problems? That’s the problem. Throttling doesn’t affect pings but forces you to drop packets. Throttling is a cheap alternative to network upgrades which are needed due to high bandwidth services gaining popularity. The rise of HD streaming (Netflix) for example destroyed older, highly populated networks.
Your pathping shows a route from Germany to the NA servers. Since there is nothing wrong with the NA servers, if you are experiencing problems with them, it’s definitely outside of ArenaNet’s control. You however appear to be on the EU servers, so I’m guessing you either transferred or pinged the wrong server.
at the least it would be fair towards people who have not yet bought the game and have no idea what they will be getting into
Posting an update in this thread wouldn’t change that. As for profits, it costs ArenaNet when they have to issue a refund, but scaring away potential customers is even worse.
Did you actually install it from the CD? By default, if you run the setup off the CD, it will actually download the game without using the CD. To actually use it, you have to manually copy the files.
Assuming you actually did use the content on the CD, you probably have around 10 GB to download. The game is roughly 20 GB total and probably up to 50% of the original CD is outdated.
Dueling was something they were open to and wanted to add to PvE.
Actual PvP however will never happen in PvE. It simply goes against one of their most basic design goals. They could add something like an arena, but it would most likely act like an activity rather than something in the world that you could accidently walk in to.
Actual PvP in PvE will only happen in PvP/E zones, aka WvW.
other than that I often have massive lag and disconnects but seeing as no one gives a kitten about our problems i’ll stick with the vpn for now
not even an official statement as to what the problem might be and whether anyone is looking into it at all…
If a VPN fixes the problem, you have proven that the problem is outside of ArenaNet’s control. They can complain to the network causing the problem, but it’s up to that network to fix it.
They probably haven’t said anything because they can’t do anything. Would you rather them give the standard response about the problem being outside of their own network and that you would need to contact your ISP? You can see WildStar’s last responses if you want, which is the same problem.
Play without traits? That’s what I did all the way to 80, then I went back and unlocked only what I needed.
As for holding back traits to level 30, they greatly reduced the time it takes to level from 1 to ~13-15. Under the old system, you needed 5 points per trait, making your first minor trait unlock at level 15. Now it’s 30, but 30-13 = 17. It’s basically the same time-wise.
In a game featuring action combat where you’re able to outplay your opponent, it doesn’t really matter what you do. Choose anything you want. Those who can will opt for a melee glass cannon play style while those who can’t will rely on a more defensive approach. When it comes to melee vs ranged, melee is generally riskier and balanced for that, thus it has a higher payout (damage).
The only way this will change is if they increase the challenge to a point where the majority can’t handle it, which will also mean that those that previously relied on defense would be screwed. Alternatively, they could rely on cheap mechanics seen in traditional MMOs, but that would turn the game into being gear based rather than skill based.
Take a game like Dark Souls for example, featuring challenging action combat. If you got the skill, you can melee glass cannon. Those who can’t stack defense.
And if I don’t have access to the old phone?
If you didn’t save the original secret key anywhere else, your only option is to contact support and get them to remove the authenticator.
If you bought the account within the last month, you could probably request a refund. That’s why you shouldn’t let other people buy you an account. Just by knowing the serial you could get the account banned.
You’re basically asking how to steal an account.
Legitimately, it’s not going to happen.
(edited by Moderator)
The stream was done from NA and had no effect on either the EU or NA servers. Considering you’re EU, you’re probably experiencing:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Latency-Lag-for-EU-Players-merged
If you bought the game through buy.guildwars2.com, it should be included in your purchase email. If you’ve lost your key, there’s nothing you can do except contact support.
To quit an episode, you open the story journal and click the button in the same way you start it.
What part exactly is the problem?
I ran through some of it on my alt thief in terrible gear (only rares, no runes) and with no traits for a little while. For any mob packs, just keep up the pistol offhand blind AoE and auto attack.
Vertical progression through infusions has been known for quite a while and fractals specifically were always meant to be an endless treadmill. Progression through agony alone isn’t good enough because the people wanting this type of progression tend to want to be better – more powerful – than other people. It wasn’t surprising when they added stats to infusions and I wouldn’t be surprised if they continued in that direction with the new tier. Although ascended has minimal value now, its final form – ascended infusions – will likely make it the equivalent of exotics vs rares. Keep in mind however this would be like 10 years later.
Ascended Gear will be introduced throughout next year, and accessible through many game play activities rather than just on. -Through infusions and existing Tiers there will be the opportunity to increase stats or abilities on a low power curve through multiple types of gameplay in GW2.
Eye of the North seems to be in line with the content we’ll be getting here, and it was priced at around $25 at release.
EotN was $39.99. There was also a bonus mission pack they were giving away just prior to its release if you spent $30 through the store. A few months later they sold it separately for $9.99. In the end, it was basically the standard expansion price of $49.99. For comparison, the standalone expansions were the standard full game price of $59.99.
You have to get to level 13 once before you’ll be able to access them. After that, you can access them at any level.
a small and insignificant sound/animation
Auto click macro + a stack of them = 250 animations in a second to all nearby clients. You could probably crash a world boss if it wasn’t culled.
It’s based on characters. If one member logs in with multiple characters and represents the guild, they will each be counted.
Patches are delivered using a CDN, which is basically many servers around the world. Your DNS determines which server you use by default. Everyone is basically going to see different results.
You can force which server you want to use by using the following command:
Gw2.exe -assetsrv 62.154.232.187:80
Here are some IPs:
62.154.232.187:80
151.249.90.138:80
194.25.94.170:80
174.35.71.9:80
151.249.90.199:80
93.188.135.37:80
62.154.232.194:80
If you find that you have trouble using various servers and only using a VPN works, there’s a problem with your ISP.
If you’re in a zerg guid, ask for donations and get the guild as a whole to cover the cost?
The only point in transferring is to switch regions or for WvW. I could see ArenaNet offering a discount for players that have a certain amount of contribution towards a guild, but they certainly wouldn’t offer it for free. Playing with guild members is tracked, so for example, after a month minimum and a certain amount of contribution from playing with other members, the cost of transferring would be reduced by x%.
In the future, I wouldn’t be surprised if servers were dropped and they went with some form of representation instead (for WvW).
Transfers should never be as costly as buying another copy of the product.
If you see no value in your account, you might as well delete all your characters and transfer for free. The cost to transfer might be more expensive when compared to the 75% sale, but those new accounts will need to pay another $20 to buy season 2, and then there’s HoT.
I would be very grateful if they remove boxers/panties/underwears. *wink wink
It’s already been done before and lasted about a week or two. Transmuting racial armor caused it to lose it’s restriction, allowing anyone to wear it even though the model didn’t exist. In GW2, underwear is just another piece of equipment, but it’s only shown when nothing is equipped. When you equip something with no model, the result is a naked character. Google if you must.
So was this a part of the agreement when buying gw2 or this just a community member talking nonsense?
Considering during interviews prior to beta they talked about the possibilities of an expansion and how they would do it, that’s just another example of someone not understanding what they said. For example, they once said they had no plans for an expansion… at this time. A lot of people only selectively hear the first part. Even during beta, they talked about expansions. For example, fishing was something that we might eventually see in an expansion.
The game and its updates will always be free of course, once purchased. They said something like that when talking about not having a subscription fee. An update is just a simple patch however, not an expansion.
What about a way to have your account tagged that such apps were going to be in use, to avoid any unpleasant actions?
It doesn’t work that way… unless you have a friend on the inside.
There is nothing you can do. Think about what you’re asking for for a moment. How would that be fair to everyone else? If they were going to allow individuals to get on a special warning list, they would instead publicly announce that they would start banning X the following week. Since they didn’t publicly allow it in the first place however, it will continue to be a gray area.
These basic programs aren’t even detected however, so for now, there’s basically no risk. It’s not until you do something that actually affects the game that it can be detected.
It’s around 20 GB total, so around 50-60 hours @ 100 KB/s.
The progress is based on how many files are remaining. If you close the launcher and open it, it will appear to reset to 0%, but there will be less files remaining.
You’re on a NA server, but are you in Europe? The NA servers aren’t having any problems. I’ve heard of some NA ISPs causing problems, but not for long. If you’re in NA, you need to complain to your ISP.
Europe however is basically experiencing overloaded networks where traffic is being throttled during certain hours, causing unstable connections resulting in lag and disconnections. If you’re in Europe, is there ever going to be a fix? It’s an expensive problem which will probably take 6-12 months to fix as it’ll require new networks. As a workaround, you can try various VPNs.
Creating a ticket for that reason is only a waste of their time, especially when they’re currently under a heavy load due to recent announcements. Notifying them beforehand will have no effect, nor will they inform you if they eventually target that program. If you contact them, they will likely respond with their 3rd party software policy and close your ticket.
the chapt 8, dragon boss, I can not beat.
Why not?
That is the problem with these types of threads. For some of us, the encounter was nothing more than running around in circles lighting fires and avoiding AoEs – not very challenging. If you don’t explain why you find it challenging, I can only assume you’re not bothering to try. What are you failing at?
Here’s a video: http://youtu.be/GYpHSeJct9k. Learn the pattern. Since everything can be predicted, you really don’t even need to have a good reaction time. Point out what you’re having trouble with.
The entire encounter follows a rather simple pattern. The dragon will always do certain attacks in a specific order. For example, after doing its double claw attack, it will always drop rocks. If it attacks from under the ground, it will always follow with either the double claw attack or rocks. Knowing this pattern, use it to your advantage to light the fires without any trouble.
Keep in mind that GW2 is a game that is skill based rather than gear based. If you haven’t noticed, the difficulty of the game has been increasing with every major release. You should assume this is the entry level into the expansion, though zerging will likely be an option.
“Yeah you got the achievement, but you don’t know how the fight works!”
This has been a problem throughout most of the game due to how zerging works. Most people don’t bother to actually learn what they’re doing, as shown by Copper and Platinum in Silverwastes. “Don’t CC!” I assume people are still spreading false information?
fyi, your name is “myself.2143” and that’s how everyone who doesn’t know you will now see your name. To them, your old name doesn’t exist. You seeing your old name is simply a caching issue. It’s not just the forums.
