What if mobs weren't to drop loot?

Mobs that are spawned due to scaling should not drop loot. Scaling is supposed to keep the difficulty up, not multiply your rewards.

The problem with loot being tied to events, like in the Silverwastes, is that you can tag and run. The contribution system needs to change if they want to continue doing this.

I’ve purchased nothing from the TP I’m gathering all of my own materials and I’ll tell you…. It’s a hellish grind.

Why would you intentionally grind all the materials when you could far more easily casually play the game, obtain maybe 10% of what you needed and enough gold to simply buy everything else? If you go in looking for a grind, you’re going to make it a grind.

Let’s say a full set of light ascended costs 700g. How long would that take? For comparison, it would be like buying 6 skins off the gem store (or T3), ~5000 gems.

I understand all of that but I do not agree that timegating is the way to go. They could have increased the amount of mats needed so the added time would have been spent gathering them and I would have been fine with that.

At least you understand the benefit of time gating. Personally, I would rather have reduced material costs and a time gate than be forced to grind for hours. You might be able to grind it out faster, but your time spent would be vastly increased.

Do this achievement: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bioluminescence

You’ll get a free ascended chest piece and by the time you’re done, you’ll likely be past all the time gates and also have enough gold to simply buy everything. It’ll take about a month or two to do it by playing normally, or a week if you hardcore server hop and abuse the mechanics. You probably don’t have the episodes unlocked though.

Ascended gear, along with fractals, were implemented to entice a certain type of player, as in the type that wants a generic dungeon grinding endgame. Back at launch, the WoW player base was demanding it, though everyone I personally knew quit before it was implemented. If you’re going to complain about the low stat increase, you’re definitely playing the wrong game because vertical progression isn’t the goal here. The idea was to make something that was slightly better to be appealing, yet also not matter. If you’re downscaled at all, ascended truly doesn’t matter, otherwise it’s only a small increase.

You’re not meant to make a piece a day. It’s meant to be a medium term goal, like one piece a month. Unlike other MMOs, anyone can casually craft ascended gear over time without really trying and the same is also true for legendaries.

That file shouldn’t be required. It’s where your local settings are stored and is automatically created. I’m guessing it actually means that it’s failing to create that file, as in the drive is full or it lacks permissions to access that folder.

By default, the Local.dat file is located in %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/. It can also exist in Documents/Guild Wars 2/, which will act as an override. Try deleting these folders (the one under documents is where your screenshots are located).

Right click Gw2.exe and run it as an administrator.

There could be a problem with your user account. Under the control panel, select user accounts and click manage another/create a new account. Login to this new account, create a “Guild Wars 2” folder on your desktop, download Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe and place it in that folder. Try running it.

Open msconfig. Under the services tab check “hide all Microsoft…” then click disable all. Under the startup tab, click disable all. Click OK and reboot. This will disable all non-essential programs, like safe mode, but not as complete. If it works, you can go through the list again, re-enabling them a bit at a time to find whichever one was causing the problem.

Unlike safe mode however, your security software will likely not be disabled using this method. Ensure it isn’t doing anything. Add an exception for the folder where Gw2.exe is located.

Download Gw2Setup.exe and rename it to Gw2.exe to get it back.

It sounds like you have a virus infecting exe files. Scan your system/download a new anti-virus program or simply reformat and clean install.

Healix.5819

If you’re running Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe and move it to wherever you want to install the game.

If you’re running Gw2.exe however, meaning you managed to install the game, do the following. After each step, restart the launcher and attempt to login.

Ensure that Gw2.exe and its bin folder/CoherentUI_Host.exe isn’t being blocked by your security software (anti-virus/firewall/sandboxers/etc). Run Gw2.exe as an administrator.

Setup Google’s DNS. After doing that, search your start menu for cmd, open cmd.exe and enter the command: ipconfig /flushdns

Right click Gw2.exe and create a shortcut. Right click the shortcut and select properties. Modify the target like this:

Target: "C:\Example\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe" -clientport 80

Run GW2 using the shortcut. If it doesn’t work, edit the shortcut again, replacing 80 with 443. Try running it again.

Search your start menu for cmd, right click cmd.exe and run it as an administrator. Enter the following commands, then reboot the computer and try running GW2:

netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

Search your start menu for cmd, right click cmd.exe and run it as an administrator. Enter the following command to verify the integrity of your system files (no need to run GW2 after this, unless it reports there was something wrong):

sfc /scannow

Press WindowsKey+R and open msconfig. Under the boot tab, check safe boot and select networking under that. Click OK and reboot. The computer will start in safe mode. You will not be able to play the game, however the launcher should still function. Under safe mode, try logging in. To undo safe mode, open msconfig and uncheck safe boot.

Open the Control Panel and search for adapters. From the results, click view network connections. Except for your main adapter providing you network/internet access, right click each adapter and select disable.

If possible, directly connect your computer to your internet modem. If that’s not possible, disable your router’s firewall and any other advanced features.

If all of the above failed and assuming you haven’t modified the hosts file to block GW2, try using a VPN and running the game through it. Try a free trial of WTFast or something (try various VPN servers outside of your ISP’s network). This is to test if your ISP is tampering with your connection.

If all of the above failed, reformat and install Windows. Your system is likely corrupted/infected. Use the -diag command line option (edit the shortcut,
Gw2.exe -diag) to create a report and post that.

Create a folder on your desktop and name it Guild Wars 2. You can move this folder wherever you want later. Download Gw2Setup.exe, put it in that folder and rename it to Gw2.exe. Run it. If it fails, right click Gw2.exe, select properties and under the compatibility tab select Windows XP, then try again.

The file it’s complaining about is located in the bin folder where Gw2.exe is located. Something may be causing it to become corrupted. Delete the bin folder before trying to run the game again. If you check CoherentUI_Host.exe, it should be 36,112,376 bytes and have a digital signature.

To check for software conflicts, press WindowsKey+R and open msconfig. Under the boot tab, check safe boot and select networking under that. Click OK and reboot. To under this, open it again and uncheck safe boot. Your computer will start in safe mode. Delete the bin folder and try running Gw2.exe. If it work, you have software interfering with your files or downloads. It could be anything from security software to a virus.

If it didn’t work under safe mode, either something is corrupting the download or your system is likely infected. To try a different server, right click Gw2.exe and create a shortcut. Right click the shortcut and select properties. Modify the shortcut’s target like this:

Target: “C:\Example\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -assetsrv 62.154.232.187

Here are some alternate servers you can try:

174.35.52.175
62.154.232.187
151.249.90.138
194.25.94.170
174.35.71.9
151.249.90.199
93.188.135.37
62.154.232.194

If it still fails, you could try using a VPN to ensure your ISP isn’t doing anything, though it’s more likely there’s a problem with your system, whether it’s a virus or damaged system files.

-

If you want to use the content on the DVD, you will have to do so manually. Copy all the Gw2.js# files to a single folder. To make it easier, make a folder in the root of your drive. Search your start menu for cmd, right click cmd.exe and run it as an administrator. Use the following command with your own paths to merge the files:

copy /b "C:\Example\Gw2.js*" "C:\Gw2.dat"

Once complete, move the Gw2.dat file to the same folder as Gw2.exe.

For the problem with lighting the fire, wait for the double claw swipe, then immediately head for and begin to light the fire. Anything that specifically targets AFKers is pointless. Anything you can come up with will be easily bypassed (by people fully intending to leech), making it only an annoyance to legitimate players. For example, captchas? Not a problem, because they’re not actually AFK.

Contribution needs a complete rework. As it is now, killing 1 mob or getting in a single hit is all you need to do. Unfortunately, keeping track of various contribution factors can be taxing to the server and implementing a more advanced system would take a lot of work.

Is This Game Worth Playing Again?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

So, is this game worth trying out again or are there still those annoying gaps where you have to spend hours going around “exploring” (or as I like to call it, the most boring activity in an MMO I’ve ever played because of its bad execution)?

GW2 PvE leveling is meant to be played exploration style. A lot of the content is hidden away, so if you don’t bother to watch and listen, you’re going to miss a lot of stuff. Most events for example tell a story and continue on after they’ve been completed and also before they have started. Hearts aren’t even a main part, they’re an afterthought when they found that WoW players couldn’t grasp not being told what to do. However, all you really need to do to level is 100% the map and move on.

Also, the personal story is now in chunks and only available every 10 levels. There’s also a new personal story (season 2) available at level 80, though you would have to purchase it.

GW2 doesn’t use P2P. WoW does though when patching, though it does have a fallback. If they’re monitoring network traffic, that works like a virus scanner, so false positives are possible. A long time ago, I played an MMO where simply entering an instance would flag my connection and I would be throttled.

How do you know every port is forwarded? Do you have your own router or did you actually get them to open ports for you? If you can login at least, that means the port wasn’t blocked, which is usually the case.

Try running the game on port 80 and 443. To do that, edit a shortcut. Example:

Gw2.exe -clientport 80

How is dropping the filter an option? Are you IT? If not, they’re not going to drop it just for you.

Lastly, filters are useless since… just use a VPN to encrypt the connection.

Suddenly, extra ping

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

the high ping starts at this ion12.ipv4.gtt.net

That’s the point where you leave your ISP’s private network and enter gtt’s network. You could complain to your ISP about it if you really wanted to. It could simply be that gtt’s network is under load or maintenance, or it could be more business related, as in we want more money or we’re going to give you a poor connection to our network.

As for the jump from 30-40 to 100 entering gtt’s network, that hop is located somewhere around London, then goes off to Frankfurt. A ~60 ms jump implies a bit of distance, which I’m guessing is from Egypt. That’s normal.

Suddenly, extra ping

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Are you using wireless? The ping to your router is rather high. A wired connection should be <=1ms.

If you actually want to monitor your ping, you’re going to want to actually record the full route like those ping plotter results so that you can compare each hop. There’s too many variables to judge it solely on the ping. Also, with that many hops in your route, +20ms really isn’t that much. Maybe it’s just more active, increasing delays by 1-3ms per hop.

Everyone else. People use stolen credit cards to buy bot accounts. If they could, they would buy gems and dump them to get gold, destroying the economy. They take the gold and disperse it. Meanwhile, the card is charged back, the accounts are banned, ArenaNet loses money and the damage done is permanent unless they roll back everyone.

By having a short waiting period, they hope that fraudulent charges are caught before they can do damage.

Download Ping Plotter, locate where the jump in response time happens, then complain to your ISP, unless the problem starts in your home network. You could also use the pathping command instead, though it might end early if one of the hops ignores pings. Other than that, and assuming a bad link somewhere along your route, you can try to use a VPN to reroute your traffic around the problem.

Use /ip in game to find an IP address to ping if you don’t already have one.

That many processes does seem a bit abnormal, especially if you have that many after a reboot and assuming an average user, however, if you consider just how many processes some software has, it also might not be that much. You would actually need to look at the processes to make a judgment. For comparison, a fresh install of Win7x64 is around 30-35 processes and I’m running with around 100.

Consider that every device connected to the computer could have several processes. That alone could be anywhere from just a few to 30+. NVidia/GeForce Experience for example is 11 processes and Razer is 4, though most are only 1 or 2. Imagine how many different devices you could have that included its own software to bloat your process count (keyboard, mouse, webcam, headset, mic, gamepad, Bluetooth device, anything Apple, etc).

How do I know what program is the one that is preventing Guildwars from running?

Trial an error and/or an educated guess.

I’m assuming safe mode worked? Press WindowsKey+R and open msconfig. Under the services tab, check “hide all Microsoft…” and click disable all. Under the startup tab, click disable all. Click OK and reboot. This is like safe mode in the way that all non-essential programs are disabled, however it’s not as complete.

If that works, you have to go through the list re-enabling services, then startup programs a bit at a time until you find the problem.

If that doesn’t work, first check msconfig for the services that couldn’t be disabled. They’ll be the only ones checked when you hide all Microsoft services. Security software for example usually can’t be disabled, so either uninstall it or disable it through its own software. You may also need to uninstall and reinstall your network adapter – download the latest drivers first.

The serial key can be used like a password, but not by itself. They would need to know other personal information in order to take control of the account, as in the contact info used to register it. The original receipt doesn’t matter in this case. However, if they originally bought it through buy.guildwars2.com, they have around 90 days to either try to get a refund or force a chargeback. If they do that, the serial key will be permanently banned, however, support will allow you to buy and apply a new key in special cases.

I’m guessing you bought a key from someone who bought it while they were on sale? If you think they’re shady enough to try and hack the account, did you give them any personal information, credit card number, etc? That would be worse.

Or did you buy someone’s actual account? That would be a violation and they could take it back or get it permanently banned at any moment.

WouldGW2 be more successful with HolyTrinity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

If GW2 offered the trinity in group specific content and in a way that anyone could do it, it probably would have been more accepted. Is it needed? Not at all, but it would have made the game more accessible, especially if it was done like GW1.

In the years before release, that’s what I thought they were going do. Everyone was a DPS and self healer by default and anyone could become the tank. For example, a warrior switching to a shield or an elementalist entering earth attunement would become a tank. Without a dedicated healer of course, the tank would have to kite or swap with someone else after a time. Funnily enough, with the addition of taunt, it could happen.

Some people simply can’t handle playing every role in one. For example, I knew a “server first” WoW raider that rage quit and never played again after their first dungeon because they, as a “DPS”, continuously pulled aggro and died. The trinity would have been better for them, however, it would have also allowed them to continue playing poorly (as in the kind of people who ignore everything in order to get the top DPS on the meters).

If the game material was as free to get by simply logging in, then why on Earth’s name would it be a problem to just leave it free and open to play for those who come a few months later? People have lives- and as hard as we may, cannot make GW2 the center of our attention.

Because they want you to be active. Even just logging in for the unlock is better than nothing because at least then you might keep up with current events. The business side of ArenaNet probably also wants to keep the active monthly players count up.

The model they’re using/trying is the same as TV. What happens if you miss the initial airing period of a TV show? You can pay to watch specific episodes, wait until the end to buy it all, wait for reruns or find a friend that has it. GW2 is basically offering the same. They might even do “reruns” a few years from now, making it permanently free.

Lastly, requiring less than a minute every 2 weeks isn’t exactly demanding. You could have even used a simple macro to automate the unlocks, though personally, I would go for something more advanced to verify the unlock.

When Anet announced that they want players having to think about using your whole skill bar to kill any enemy in HoT I was a little worried and still am.

That doesn’t mean you’re going to have to use your whole skill bar. It simply means that they want you to put in the effort, as in don’t just casually stand there and auto attack or spam 1-5 on cooldown. If you’re good enough, I doubt you’ll ever need more than dodge and auto attack.

Different weapon skills have different purposes. Take a warrior’s greatsword for example. Instead of using whirlwind on cooldown, use it as another way to dodge. Instead of using rush to close in, use it to move away. Think about the skills and weapon sets your using and use them based on the situation. Maybe you’ll now want to carry a defensive set in your second slot. The game has always been like this, but most people would rather put in the least effort – if the content is too challenging, simply complain or zerg it.

In the traditional MMO every single random mob in the open world takes everything on your skill bar to kill it.

In most other MMOs, I remember having at the very least 20 skills. A majority of the time, only 5 of them were actually used.

GW2 doesn’t actually need to be installed in the traditional sense. You can move it anywhere you want after it’s done. If you would like to bypass setup altogether, simply rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and place it where you would like to install the game.

Imagine it? Haven’t you ever been stuck in combat? In short, all that changes is you have to sit there and wait if you need to heal and it’s on cooldown.

Are you running Gw2Setup.exe and seeing the login box before it ask you where to install it? If so, rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and move it to where you would like to install the game. You may also want to check your %temp% folder for Gw2.dat and move it also, to where you put Gw2.exe.

Why am I underleveled?

Hearts are only meant to act as a guide. If you fully explore the map, gather and do events, you should have no problem keeping up. In fact, if you do that, you’ll eventually find yourself far past the recommended levels. If you take up crafting, you’ll gain even more experience from it.

If you only wish to follow the hearts however, you’re going to need to go to the other zones of equal or lesser level that you haven’t done.

What do you guys think the price will be?

Less than $59.99 (new game price) and more than $20 (season 2). At the very most however, $49.99 since that’s the typical expansion price.

So far, HoT doesn’t look like a full expansion, so I’d guess it would be less than $49.99. Since season 2 is $20, I’d guess that they would want to make it cost more than $29.99 so they don’t look similar.

$34.99, which was also the price of GW1 EotN. At most, up to $10 more.

Open Computer, right click the drive where GW2 is stored and select properties. Under the tools tab, check the drive for any errors, including bad sectors (this is chkdsk, as said above). After completing it, try it again.

If it still fails, disable any programs that might be monitoring your disk activity, such as an anti-virus program. To make things simple however, press WindowsKey+R and open: msconfig. Under the boot tab, check safe boot and select network under that. Click OK and reboot the computer, which will now start in safe mode with only essential programs running. Try running the launcher. To undo this, open msconfig and uncheck safe boot.

fails every single time

If you were deleting Gw2.dat, don’t do that. If any errors were found when checking the disk however, run Gw2.exe with the -repair option. For example, if Gw2.exe is located in C:\Example\Gw2.exe, open a folder and in the address bar enter:

C:\Example\Gw2.exe -repair

Can I update for the other goodies, or will it just give me a second account?

You cannot upgrade an account to the heroic edition. Buying a new key will buy you a new account. If you want the heroic edition stuff, you’ll need to buy it through the game.

If you want to use the DVD, you have to do it manually. Make a folder in the root of one of your drives, for example, C:\GW2\. Copy all files on the DVD that include .js in their extension.

Once that’s done, open your start menu and search for cmd. Right click cmd.exe and run it as an administrator. In the command prompt window, enter the following command – use your own paths:

copy /b "C:\GW2\Gw2.js*" "C:\Gw2.dat"

Once those files are merged, you can move Gw2.dat to your install location (where Gw2.exe is) and delete the folder where the .js files were. If you don’t have a Gw2.exe yet, simply download Gw2Setup.exe through the website (account management) and rename it to Gw2.exe.

Getting terrible lag/ping spikes

You need more information to see where exactly the spike is happening. You can use the pathping command instead, but if any hop in your route ignores pings, it will stop on that hop, making it rather useless.

To use the pathping command:

pathping -q 100 -4 64.25.38.170

If pathping doesn’t work for you, use PingPlotter:

1. Download and install the standard version of Ping Plotter here
(there is a trial period for the Standard version but you will not be obligated to make a purchase).
2. Log in to Guild Wars 2 and type in /IP in the chat box. Doing so will display the IP address of the server to which you currently are connected.
3. Run Ping Plotter and put the IP address from step 2 in the “Address to Trace” section in Ping Plotter. Make sure you leave off the “:0” at the end or the test will not be able to be run correctly.
4. Click “Trace” and allow the tool to run for at least 30 minutes while playing Guild Wars 2 (preferably during the timeframe in which you experience this issue). Also, please keep the trace running for a minimum of 30 minutes, even if you get disconnected from the server.

You will want to look for the first hop where the spike starts to happen. If it’s past your home network, you will want to take this information and complain to your ISP. If it’s within your home network however, you’ll need to check your computer and router.

Update your computer’s network card drivers. If your computer has multiple network cards/connections, try using a different one.

First, rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and place it where you would like to install the game. For simplicity, put it in a folder on your desktop to prevent any permission problems. GW2 doesn’t actually need to be installed in the traditional sense, so you’re free to move this folder wherever you want. Try running it – right click it and run it as an administrator, just in case.

Simply disabling your security software isn’t always enough. Some do still function even when disabled and some even leave hooks in the system when uninstalled, which is why some have special removal tools. If your security software has a sandboxing feature, disable it. If there’s an auto/game/silent mode, disable it. Look for a feature called HIPS or something involving execution prevention and add Gw2.exe as an exception.

Cannot purchase Guildwars 2

why’s that? I can’t buy more than 2 per sale?

Someone else had that problem and it seemed to work again after several hours. I’m guessing it’s to prevent stolen credit cards from buying hundreds of copies, though it also might be because of the sale. There’s a potential for profit.

If you don’t want to wait, try a different payment method, or you could use PayPal as a proxy.
