If you’re getting that performance with that system, you should be thrilled. I’m one of the sufferers of the big underutilization performance issue (huge thread titled “Low FPS”), and I get 15-30 in LA with everything maxed, depending on what I’m looking at. My system is technically better than yours too.

AMD FX-4100 @ 4.0Ghz
Radeon HD 7870 (2GB, DDR5)
8GB of ram.

Seriously, that performance should thrill you. Hardly anyone is getting that, especially with your hardware.

Thanks Gaile, it might just be my power supply…just wishing it wasn’t hah.

Well, i assumed that 500W would be enough, but I’m not an expert on the subject, so that would be the next logical step. I encourage you to buy one from a local place, such as Best Buy, etc.

PSU’s seem to have a surprisingly high failure rate, and you don’t want to have to wait for an RMA if it happens to be bad when it arrives.

Try lowering the memory clock a little on the GPU. Every time I’ve had that issue it’s been caused by the memory being clocked too high.

That GPU temperature is excellent. It’s definitely not a thermal thing. Most modern GPUs handle into the 80 degree range without issue.

Hmm, I was tweaking the GPU clock in CCC’s AMD Overdrive, but I couldn’t lower the memory clock any lower.

The default for HD 6850 would be 1000 MHz, but CCC only let me set it to 1050 MHz by lowest, would that 50 MHz be much of a difference?

Probably not :-/

Thanks guys for the answers, didnt realize that this post was still going on, looks like its Alienware and msi i should be looking at it, from the sounds of this post, compared to Alienware, MSI looks similar to Alienware, specs wise

Yeah, the bottom line is that you should find what you want on Alienware, then find another company that produces the same laptop (spec wise) for a lot cheaper. Then you can just buy all the bells-and-whistles components you want until you fit into your original budget.

Is the vid card hitting 66 degrees or the CPU?

GPU’s can usually handle upwards of 80-90, but CPUs often top out in the 60s.

500W should be enough for what you’re running. Typically this wouldn’t just flat shut off your PC though. It typically causes legitimate crashes or system resets.

It’s possible that your previous vid card bottlenecked your CPU to a point that it never worked hard enough to overheat, but now that you don’t have that bottleneck, the CPU is able to work at 100% or something along those lines. Just a theory.

I’m very confused by this. I set up all the settings this way, and only one of the settings actually made any difference…but it was a surprising one.

Disabling reflections gave me a 7-10FPS boost….even when there’s nothing reflective on the screen. I can disable it and enable it and instantly see a difference in the framerate, but I can’t imagine why, if there’s nothing reflective on the screen.

I DID NOT enable Vertical Sync, which was oddly recommended, because that recommendation makes ZERO sense. That will HIT performance, not improve it, and it caused a ~1FPS drop by enabling it. Logic Fallacy there…

Color me confused about the reflections thing though.

Working boost to your FPS, if you don't know the trick - you will be surprised.

Bandmarks have shown the opposite.

Since Aero is rendered by your GPU, Windows suspends it when it’s being overlayed by a fullscreen process.

When you start a game using the classic interface, which is rendered as a bitmap, you get lower performance, because windows continues to render it in the background, which sucks down (a small amount of) CPU performance.

It’s a gold sink. They want to keep the economy flowing and having to drop a ton of karma/gold on a cultural weapon for each character keeps it from saving up huge amounts.

That actually has the opposite effect. If you dump all your money into Cult. armor, you cannot contribute that money to the actual game economy. That’s why gold sinks like WP’s and Repairs make no sense. That money isn’t contributing in any way to the economy, and it’s actually HARMING the economy by causing players to put money where it simply doesn’t matter.

This is why economists try to stimulate an economy by providing incentive for people to add money INTO that economy. The famous cash for clunkers and bailout programs were crafted with exactly that intent.

If they want an economy to prosper, they need to stop TAXING, essentially.

Obviously “The Stupid Default” is the better choice. Anyone who disagrees hasn’t played a game with a default FOV they didn’t like.

The obvious example to this is Dead Space. CRAZY low FOV, and a complete inability to change it. Gave me motion sickness every time, so I never finished the game. That’s a disaster for a company trying to sell an MMO. When people quit the game, they have the potential to lose a noticeable amount of income over it.

I understand their reasons from their perspective. It reminds me a bit of how apple does business. You kinda have to experience their product(s) the way they want you to, and you don’t get a lot of say in it other than that. It just kinda stinks for all the players who really want this option.

Biggest difference here is that by-and-large we all aren’t apple fans or apple consumers. We’ve been subscribing to a completely different school of thought in the PC Gaming world for several decades, and ANet’s stance goes against what we know from prior experience.

Was a failsafe added for some events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hickeroar.9734

I apologize if this isn’t in the right forum. Not sure where the right place for this would be otherwise.

I had an experience last night where a broken event seemed to “fix itself” or “reset itself.”

There’s an escort mission in Malchors Leap where you’re bringing 10 troops from point A to point B. It got stuck and all the troops were just standing there in a huddle. I reported a bug for it, and moved on. I’d killed a few enemies in the area while I was there.

About a minute after walking away I got a bronze award for completing the escort event, but it had just been totally bugged out when I was there. AFAIK it was nowhere near its normal completion point either.

Have some events received a failsafe timer of sorts? I know there are a couple other broken events in the surrounding zones that are just broken with no resetting.

I still don’t understand the DR complaining. I guess I play different than the complainers, but I have never run into it.

When Arah was down the other day on TC, I ran the plinx + tar elemental + escort missions in the north of Cursed Shore for about 2 hours straight, and didn’t have a single drop in the amount of loot I was getting or the amount of Karma I got from the events.

I got 374 (I think that’s the right number) karma for every event I ran, and it didn’t drop at all the entire time.

Loot was also consistent. I think it’s all much ado about nothing…

Thanks for the answer, but I can still get a (much) wider FoV by playing on 3 monitors.. guess that is the only solution for those who gets sick then. I’m not one of them but I think the current FoV doesn’t make the game justice AND it is kindof annoying, it’s like playing with tunnelvision.

I think this is a subjective topic. I’m usually a “FOV Nazi” in games and get very irritated when there’s no option to change the FOV.

In GW2 it never even occured to me to look because it just seemed “right” the way it was. I’m guessing you’re probably used to cranking it up higher than I do in games or something….

I still wouldn’t mind an option for it even though it could impact performance, simply for the fact that it would please a “large vocal minority” of the community. Could be as simple as warning the user when they change it that it might adversely affect performance. I have a sneaking suspicion that in the long-term we may see it show up.

Edit:
Also, using three monitors automatically implies a performance hit by default, so I don’t think that “exception” is really an “exception.”

Why GW 2 will not fail

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hickeroar.9734

I have every faith in ANet that they will get it right in the long term. I’m especially positive that they will figure out what sort of balance needs to be set up for “endgame” to work properly.

While they’re not the only MMO to feature dynamic events, they ARE the only one to make them all deep and story-driven. They will have to find the best way to make good, large, dynamic events that are challenging enough that hardcore players will stick around for them. They don’t have “raids,” though I’ve seen some cool concepts for them in the forums (instanced, huge meta-events, for instance).

Anyway, I digress. GW2 is positively not going to go anywhere for a very long time, and I’m sure they’ll fill it out appropriately.

Store prices are too high...

in Suggestions

Posted by: Hickeroar.9734

Hickeroar.9734

Not sure if anyone cares about my opinion on stuff like this, but I’m gonna post it just in case.

IMHO, the store prices are just far too high for what you’re getting.

For instance: You may go spend $2 on a fully featured smartphone app that you really like and feel is worth it. This is a good value.

In this game you spend $2 and get a key to open a virtual chest that probably doesn’t have anything worth talking about in it.

Or you might get a 1 hour boost in XP gains.

Or a one-time-use party box that you can drop in the game for people to play with….???

I would not mind spending money in the game, but the pricing model as it stands is seriously out of whack.

The only thing that seems like a non-exorbitant price are the (very limited) selection of vanity items. Those are the only permanent things that you can actually continue to enjoy for more than an hour after shelling out your money on them. They’re still too expensive, but at least you have something to show for them…

TLDR, Bottom Line:
If you had been selling everything in the store for half what you are, I would have spent a decent amount of money already. As it stands I haven’t spent ANY money because there’s hardly anything in the store worth anywhere near what you’re charging for it.

Lower the prices significantly and I bet you’ll see a more overall profit from the store by a noticeable margin.

GW2 Still lacks a *true* questing system

The lack of a questing system was 100% intentional, and was widely touted as a SELLING point for the game. Not sure why this is surprising.

Yes, but throughout development I got the impression that Dynamic Events were going to effectively replace questing – and I don’t feel that they have at all.

OK, you have a point there. I’ve had that thought at many points.

The biggest problem with dynamic events is that the only thing about them that’s dynamic is when they start….and that’s probably not even dynamic (probably a timer). They’re really SCRIPTED events in every way, which is the very opposite of dynamic.

I think the problem with underwater combat against a truly hard mob is that you just can’t move fast enough to stay away from them. Most of the GW2 combat is based on mobility, so this is a big problem.

On land, you can do all sorts of things to slow them down or stay away, but in the water they’re far faster than you, and going head to head with a megaladon at close range has a guaranteed outcome.

Mobs spawning on players + repair bills

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hickeroar.9734

Hickeroar.9734

Unless you’re already fighting 5+ mobs, a single mob spawning while you’re fighting will certainly not cause you to die.

If it DOES cause you to die, you probably need to revisit your fighting style, because something is very wrong.

I regularly take on far more than two mobs by myself in Orr, and survive just fine. I took on 7 at once down by the south SP in Malchors Leap, and survived with my ranger + Shortbow & greatsword. I’ve seen others do this as well, so it’s not that unusual.

You need to realize that there are professions that are very strong against multiple regular mobs (Ranger, Warrior, Guardian) and ones who are very weak against multiple regular mobs (Mesmer, Thief, non-staff Ele). Both lists are not complete (these are just from my experience).

I would encourage you to youtube this. There’s a guy with a mesmer who wanders around the map taking on 6 mobs at a time to prove that it’s easy. Frankly, he downs them WAY faster than I do on my ranger.

All these underpowered classes are simply being played badly. There are a lot of youtube videos showing this.

Besides, a lot of people gripe that rangers are underpowered. I think they’re almost OVERpowered. Lower damage, but absolutely insane survivability when played right.

The bottom line is that if you try and play this game without moving, and understanding the nature of your weapons and class, you will fail.

The problem with adding a lot of mounts is that you end up with trade district, stormwind by the time your 3rd expansion pack hits. You can’t even see the ground or sky because everyone has their superluminous mega superdragon mount.

GW2’s design eliminates the need for mounts, and the problems that go with them.
