Talking GW2 expansion (long overdue)

I’m pretty sure that NCSoft doesn’t “hate” Cantha. It’s a business decision. That being said, GW1 was a smaller market than GW2 is so I’m sure the same set of criteria don’t apply in both cases. Things change. Personnel changes. Environment changes. I doubt if profit is the only factor driving the Cantha decision, which is what you implied two posts ago. Anyway, this is starting to ramble. And you’re right, it’s all speculation and wasn’t really the point of my original post.

But at the end of the day if Cantha is going to make lots of money then you will see how fast a foot will be brought back up.
That the thing they all want to make money its not good or evil if things do not work out then other things will be tried. Nsoft was part of Anet before GW1 came out and its going to be part of Anet for some time. This is just how the world of money works.

Of course. My whole point being is that ultimately these decisions are NCSofts to make, not A-Nets, right?

No i am not saying that at all the ultimate decision is will it make money or will it not.

Of course, but that’s a truism. The sky is blue. And it’s certainly not the only criteria in making a descision. Again, Cantha being a prime example. There seems to be a lot of clamor for it being introduced in GW2. That to me, barring any other information, would indicate that it would probably be a profitable enterprise, yet Cantha will not be introduced.

and the INSANITY of putting “pakitteno” / gambling like RNG items into the gem store. That last one has people getting very confused about the direction of things. It just smacks of “somebody here is making decisions that seem out of touch”.

I dunno, maybe they have analytics to show western gamers really like money for RNG… but I’m skeptical. Of course I don’t think eastern gamers like it either… but maybe they’ve not had a choice but to have it…

I can’t see anybody from anywhere liking it.

You know that there’s a whole city in Nevada based entirely on RNG, right?

Okay this doesn’t necessarily follow.

Guild Wars 1 was also owned by NcSoft and made by Anet. I’m pretty sure Ncsoft didn’t tell Anet what to do. Creativity doesn’t work that way.

If you had an artist that was awesome working for you, would you tell him how to paint? Very often corporations that own other corporations don’t interfere as long as that corporation is making money for them. If that company is meeting expectations, they don’t have to worry about getting involved, because that takes work and money.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if Guild Wars 2 tanks, NCsoft is going to move in and take over. But if the game is doing well, they don’t really have a reason to.

It doesn’t necessarily follow, sure. I’m not saying that the NCSoft/A-Net relationship is draconian or otherwise. I have no idea if it is or not. A wise publisher allows as much creativity as possible from their developers, within the purview established for them. But you can be sure, and Cantha is a prime example, that if/when NCSoft doesn’t want something, they’ll put their foot down and that’s the end of it.

I’m just trying to disabuse anyone of the idea that any of it, intellectual property or cash proceeds, is truly A-Nets to do with or spend as they please or ever has been. “Wholly owned subsidiary” right?

You guys understand that A-Net is owned, and all property produced by them, by NCSoft? They don’t get “put in their place” by A-Net. They can’t “cut NCSoft out of the picture.” It’s not their picture; it all belongs to NCSoft. A-Net is told what to do by NCSoft and they do it. Every nickel they make from the gem store or boxed sales is the property of NCSoft to do with what they please.

All that being said, I love GW2. One for the sheer fact that it’s not like WoW. I have no problem providing NCSoft with my money so they keep feeding A-Net. If GW2 remains profitable, you can be sure they will keep feeding it.

OP isn’t really talking about the legendary, just the precursor. I’m leaning towards agreeing on the difficulty to get the desired precursor. I’m not sure giving out precursors at the end of your personal story is the right way to go, but making it easier than an RNG crapshoot or grinding for gold.

Last night, a guildie got an RNG precursor from CoE. It was the focus. We’re a small guild, but have been playing steadily since launch. This was the first RNG precursor drop for any of us. Granted, it’s a 7 person guild, and I’m not asking them to fling them around like they’re candy, but I would think it should be easier to get your desired precursor. Building a legendary from the precursor should still be difficult, and I don’t have a problem with the current system.

The constant change of talent tree in World of Warcraft was really annoying, and the ‘’talent tree’’ they use in Mists of Pandaria felt horrible, in my opinion. I did not like it at all because everything felt so no-brainer.

I like the trait system in Guild Wars 2, they just need to make more traits more appealing.

This. Futzing around with those systems can kill a game. I like the way it is, it just needs some tweaking.

It means that it’s not confined to just what they state in the EULA. It closes the loophole where someone would say: “well you didn’t state that it was excluded.”

Like A,B, and C are excluded. And someone with D thinks it’s ok because it’s not on the list. The bottom line is that it’s still ultimately up to NCSoft as to what is or is not appropriate.

I just started 2 days ago, and I didnt know that F&F was a temporarily event.
I was just starting out, and didnt know what was going on.
So i played by my own pace, ignoring F&F event thinking that “Meh, I’ll do that when i get the hang of GW2”

I didnt care that F&F ended as i didnt know anything about it.

However, upon reading the content in F&F from the wiki. I got to say that I’m quite disappointed that I did not get to experience the F&F.

All i had from F&F was the achievement from the bonfire…Lol

Maybe Anet could allow newcomers like me or future players to experience F&F in a different environment…Maybe in a server where the world is stuck in a timeloop with F&F event.

No, they are pretty dead set on screwing anyone who buys the game after release, that’s the stance I think they will stay with. It sucks, but I’m ready to write off the first Living Story as a beta/failed experiment and move on myself.

Well, I certainly wouldn’t call it an expansion’s worth of content, but to be fair, that was posted in December and he doesn’t specifically say “Flame and Frost is intended to be one expansion’s worth of content.” Schedules change. I would expect that what he was talking about is the Southsun stuff. In any case, you need to read this which was from this month rather than last year:

Supposedly there are rumblings about the MF dungeon or part of it becoming a fractal. Since you’ve only been here 2 days you probably won’t understand that, but you will.

Fractals are permanent content that work like mini dungeons. Some of them a little too long to be mini, but that’s another thread. You can look them up on the wiki.

The only constant to this game will be change and he the OP needs to accept or move on.

Thanks, I knew I had seen it somewhere, I just didn’t want to dig it up.

Also, a living story arc can be an expansions worth of content, and it doesn’t have to be all at once. They can roll it out over a period of time with dungeons and achievements and skins etc. That’s the whole idea and I think it’s a good one. Obviously I’m not alone.

So by your own idea, they should remove just about every zone from Guild Wars 2. Because there is just about nobody in them. There’s people at the boss events for their daily chests, and that’s just about it. Nobody uses these zones anymore, so we should take them out, too, right? Oh, and get those dumb repeating “dynamic events” out of the game. How is it dynamic when I’ve seen and done the same thing six times in the past two hours? Oh, and while we’re at it, remove those dungeons in the game. All of them. It doesn’t make sense that I’ve killed Ghost Eater eighty times, or that I destroyed the Nightmare tree again and again.

Nonsense. Of course not. There obviously has to be some permanent content otherwise new players and alts have nowhere to level. Everything can’t be 100% dynamic, that’s impossible. At least at this point. There are eight permanent dungeons, and I’m sure there will be more. There are dynamic events that give the illusion of permanent changes.

It wasn’t supposed to blow me away? Don’t market it out as an expansion’s worth of content. And you still have yet to explain what the concept is behind the living story. It’s no different than their one-time events exception of the fact that it stayed in for more time, which is what people suggested for their one-time events in the first place.

Show me where Flame & Frost itself was touted as an expansions worth of content.

What’s to explain behind the concept of living story? Isn’t it obvious? It’s what were discussing in this thread. Whether these sort of world changing events with temporary content can work. I think they can, and obviously Arenanet thinks so, as well. They’re obviously trying to break the mold with GW2. Whether it works or not remains to be seen. Obviously, you don’t like it. Some of us do.

In response to WoW being a “graveyard of unused content”.. that is absurd. That content was not “unused”. It just wasn’t removed from the game for those that wanted to experience it. That content was VERY much used in the time that they were relevant, and they are still used for people hunting down achievements or skins.

Right. Very much used in the time they were relevant. Virtually unused now. Go to Hellfire Penninsula now and there may be 3 or 4 people in there leveling toons and trying to sprint though them to get to the relevant content. The dungeons have no one in them. The raids even less so. Achievements and skins mean more when they’re not available anymore. That’s an opinion. Just because you don’t agree with it doesn’t make it wrong.

The living story is a concept. A dynamic world where things change over time. The Lich King is dead. You can’t go fight him anymore. The Molten Alliance has been defeated. The dungeon is gone. You may say “But why?” Because that’s the way they’ve designed it, and judging by some of the responses in this thread, it seems fairly popular. I know I prefer that over leaving in ancient content that no one does anymore. It makes the world more immersive. I think it’s a great idea. Flame and Frost was a proof on concept for Arenanet. Not the player. It was sold as a trial of the whole living story concept. And judging by the fact that they’re rolling out more of it they proved to themselves what they were trying to prove. Whatever that was. It wasn’t supposed to blow you away.

I’m guessing that the original Lost Shores content was premature, so rather than roll the whole thing out, they decided to test a couple things first. So we got Flame & Frost.

They’ve already said that Flame and Frost was a test of the living story concept and wasn’t intended to be very large or in depth. It’s a proof of concept. Squawking about temporary content is silly. WoW is a graveyard of unused content. There are whole continents of content with no one in them. I love the idea of temporary content. You defeat the Molten Alliance, it goes away. You don’t have the Lich King still floating around years after he was defeated. The world changes, and stays that way. What a great concept. There’s an old showbiz saying: “always leave them wanting more.”

Secondly, “play your own way” still has to exist withing the framework provided by the game. You can’t play a battlemage in heavy armor casting spells. The game isn’t built that way. They can’t make it an “all things to all people.” It’s impossible. It’s like the guy who complained that crafting is unfair to people that like to play only one character. He couldn’t “play his own way” because he could only have two crafting disciplines at a time. They can’t possibly cater to everyone’s whim. They can’t possibly make “equivalent” experiences for 3 million people.

I run 2,500 on my warrior (shout based with soldier runes), a guildie guardian runs 2,700 and another warrior guildie is running 3,000. Mostly fractals and dungeons, very little WvW or sPvP.

Here you can at least collectable store them, but I do hope they move out of the inventory API completely at some point…

No, I know that, but I dunno why A-Net can’t implement a similar interface to Blizzards. Considering how gem store revenue focused they are. Like I said, I’d bother to collect them if they didn’t take bag space. Same with town clothes. Frivolous items taking up bag space is dumb. Most people will do without, which doesn’t sell many gems.

The Secret World had a good “clothes” interface. Once you bought it, it was in a drop-down that you could change at will.

I find myself agreeing with Vayne far more than disagreeing, for whatever that’s worth. Of all the MMO’s I’ve played since Everquest, GW2 is by far my favorite. Is it perfect? No, but IMO, it’s better than anything else out there.

I’d like more emotes, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. I doubt I’ll buy any dances, either. Especially if they take up inventory slots. That and miniatures. If they had an interface like Blizzard’s, I would collect them. I did in WoW. It was fun. Taking up bag space with items like that is dumb.

Being indignant about only 20 emotes, which is not next to 0, and a B2P game selling dances in the gem store is childish. The reason the lights are still on at A-Net is the fact that they do sell vanity items for cash. That’s how it works.

Keep up the good work, Vayne.

Currently there’s this issue where you guys want ascended stuff for laurels, but are whining about the fact that spending an hour to get dailies done is not something you are prepared to do?

On the subject of “Dailies are not forced on people – is not an argument” – Yes, yes it is a perfectly good argument – Here’s a side-by-side comparison:

Do you want to get CoF Gear? – Then do CoF runs and get tokens.
Do you want ascended gear bought with laurels? – Then do dailies and monthlies.

Neither point is forced upon you by devs, neither one is required for you to fully enjoy the game. You chose to take it upon yourself to obtain the best possible gear, thus setting yourself this goal, and the main pre-requisite for it is doing dailies. Hence you are forcing yourself to do them. Not the devs, not the game, but you – because it’s your choice.

How much easier do you need dailies to become? Instead of whining like children about how you cannot spare an extra 30min to an hour to do the dailies (since you want the laurels) why not just whine about how unfair it is Anet is not just giving you free laurels every day for logging in? Easy enough for you? Hell why not just make wurms in Queensdale drop exotics exclusively. See how long GW stays interesting after that.

You are given an OPTIONAL goal to strive for. Whether you do or don’t is up to you.
All of the arguments I’ve read so far are the equivalent of you deciding to go to the store to buy a gallon of milk, then, on your way, deciding that it’s unfair that you have to lift your fat behind and actually walk there and you don’t just get that brought to your door for no extra charge because your bought milk once before in your life.

I find it ironic that a guy named RageQuit is posting a rational argument.

+1 for you.

That you feel that you have to do all of an optional piece of content is your problem, not A-Nets. You meaning anyone that sees this as necessary, not RageQuit. Dailies are an option. Because you want to stay on top of the leaderboard, that is your option. If #1 is doing something optional to stay on top, then of course you have to do those same things to stay even, but, and this is the key point, you have opted to try to compete. No one, especially not A-Net, is holding a gun to your head forcing you to do so. It’s like, I want to win the Superbowl, but because that other team is scoring points, that means I have to score points to win, and that’s not fair. Do you realize how stupid that sounds?

Monthlies give 10 laurels. I finished about 25% of my monthlies last night, just playing the game. 75% of my monthly veterans are done, just from doing the new molten dungeon once. Stop whining. It’s like the guy, I forget who it was that said on the dungeon forum: “I want dungeon master, but I don’t want to work for it. Is it ok if I buy dungeon runs to get it?” Seriously.

The only reason you need ascended gear is for the agony resistance, and a good dodger can do everything but jade maw without any.

You understand that, in other games, if you switch crafting professions, you lose all your recipes? That you can level a toon in GW2 with just crafting, right? You don’t ever have to leave Lion’s Arch. If you want to restrict yourself to one character only, that’s your problem. The idea that the game has to cater to your needs desires specifically or it’s unfair is childish.

I hope it helps you to know that I am indeed VERY grateful GW2 isn’t like other games. I personally do not see the logic behind the cost of changing crafts, when, as you pointed out, it can be circumvented quite easily. Perhaps you could help me understand? Just to be clear, I am not suggesting abolishing or completely remaking the crafting system.

For the same reason you can’t be a guardian and a mesmer on the same character. Sure, you could do it that way, but I doubt you’ll get much support for it. Same with this. The Secret World tried it that way. A single character could do everything, as long as you spent the points to get it. Eventually, if you played long enough, I suppose you could have every skill in the game on one toon. You could change your spec at will. There weren’t any crafting disciplines, everyone could do it all. Meh. But, that being said, that’s the way the game was built. Crafting was next to useless. I haven’t seen many games where crafting was worth anything anyway. DAoC and Star Wars: Galaxies being two exceptions. Everything was player made, and everything eventually wore out, so there was always a market for stuff. But, if I remember correctly, you couldn’t have every crafting profession.

Childish was too strong a word. I apologize. Everyone has a right to ask for what they want in a game that they paid for, but don’t get your hopes up on this one.

HUGE disadvantage for 1 character players...

I like to play 1 character, and 1 character only. That means all my crafting is done on that character. Therefore, switching between crafts costs me 40 silver!! 40 Silver is not a small amount of money at all. However, if I was a player who liked to have loads of characters I could have all the crafts and just switch character to switch crafts…
I am basically saying that although the need for gold sinks is vital, this particular gold sink penalizes players who like to play with 1 character, and there should be nothing wrong with that.
