I responded to the dev in the thread they said this on, but will repeat here. Personally I’d like the healing skill to be locked, the elite skill to be locked, and there to be a total of 5 utility skills of which you choose the three you wish to use. That would give some choice and customization without over doing it.
I like “taunt” and think it very descriptive. You taunt a player, they blindly run toward you swinging their weapon. Between that and the tooltip I don’t think there should be any confusion. I also don’t think they should rename their things to accomodate miconceptions due to other games.
I think you are right, you’re jumping the gun. They will almost surely have MH sword which will likely be a melee power type of weapon (maybe a mix of power and condi).
As for a TH weapon, I agree with a lot of people and hope they do NOT give greatsword. However, I completely believe they will give a staff as a melee weapon. In the original trailer, they showed it. Many thought it a spear (but Anet said this wasn’t so) and then people thought it was hammer, but they just showed the hammer and it is a 1,200 range weapon with no animation that matches the trailer. At this point it is hard to say it isn’t a staff.
I for one, am very psyched about this!
I have to say I’m overly skeptical about them implementing a melee staff. That opens the door to having to implement a completely new set of animations to go along with that…martial arts type animations to go along with staff attacks. That would be a ton of work on top of them already having to rework a ton of other things…after they have already put so much effort into turning hammer into a ranged weapon. I’m not very excited about the prospect of melee attacking with what amounts to a stick either. I’m not saying its impossible though. I’d also note they haven’t introduced a fully ranged condi weapon either. That leaves scepter, long/short bow, or staff. I doubt they’ll clone mesmer GS for this as I assume that mesmer GS is supposed to be a special snowflake.
You make some good points, but I hold to my theory due to a few things:
- Staff can be a very deadly melee weapon. There is an old Chinese story of the greatest swordsman of his time who won every duel and battle he ever fought, save for one. When he fought a vagabond wielding a simple staff.
- If it wasn’t a hammer in the trailer, what was it? The animations are there already
- They made a point in the last POI of saying multiple times that the Revenant uses weapons like no other profession. This applies to the unorthodox hammer use and I think continues to apply to the staff (they did use the plural of weapons)
- They seem to be trying to make the Revenant very unique. How better to do this then to give them unique ways of using old weapons, and not having them rely on the most overused weapon in the game, the greatsword?
I think you are right, you’re jumping the gun. They will almost surely have MH sword which will likely be a melee power type of weapon (maybe a mix of power and condi).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but i’m pretty sure its Rubi’s show…
Not today it wasn’t. Jon and Roy took off with it and never gave it back until the end. Rubi is great at color commentary, but she uses a lot of words to say very little. Jon and Roy on the other hand were quite the opposite today and never let up. They gave a lot of information in a very concise, energy filled, and enthusiastic way. They were wonderful!
Edit: in my haste I put in a wrong name so I corrected

There is no way I get “no skill will ever cost more than 50%/the amount you start with” from that. There’s not much “push-pull” if you come in with all your buttons hot and are just waiting to store up double what you need for your best shot…
And, no skill from the stream today cost more than 50% of the skill bar.
And it seems like you can stay in one legend if you know what youre doing.
It seems more like you SHOULD stay in one Legend currently. Especially if its Jalis and Mallyx. I think the skills of those two just don’t synergize too well, but that is propably intentional, showing the most opposite Legends first…
I disagree. I can see some very active playing with the Revenant and am looking forward to it. Manage your energy, manage your skills, keep cognizant your positioning, swap legends to optimize the outputs. Absolutely loved the look of the profession in today’s POI.
All that said, I think we will have a lot of Revenants early on of course because they are new and shiney, but the active and intelligent game play it seems to require will likely thin out the herd rather quickly.
We kinda had the confirmation that we will have 4 legends: since 2 trait lines are each for Mallyx and Jalis, the 3rd one being for the profession, it is easy to assume that the next two trait lines will be used for 2 more legends.
I saw that too and can’t help but agree that the theory has merit. I really hope that isn’t the case though, because that would leave very little room for expansion later for adding any other legends.
The 25 minutes late annoyed me, but I understand being late, however they didn’t even acknowledge or apologize for the tardiness. I found that rather rude.
That said, Jon and Roy took off with the show wonderfully. Rubi is great at color commentary, but she uses a lot of words to say very little. I concur with Rexx. But one of the reasons I liked Shiro was because he was believable in the sense was that he was human. He made mistakes and wasn’t just the “unkillable bodyguard”. Reminds me alot of Logan Thackeray actually. What if Queen Jenna died? Would he go insane?
It would be more like, what if Logan discovered that Queen Jenna was plotting to kill him and he was 100% sure of it. Would he go insane the way of Shiro too?
I also may have missed it, but I don’t think his skills have cds, just energy costs or upkeeps.
Just a small bit of info since it is now burried a few pages back. The MMO interview confirmed that at least some of the skills will have a cooldown. Though they mentioned that many of these will likely have less of a cooldown since they also cost energy. The one they mentioned was “Bring down the hammer” skill having a 15 second cooldown. I’d also be willing to bet the healing skills have cooldown to prevent spamming them 4 or 5 times in a row.
There are a number of theories in this forum on the same topic here in the lore section.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lore/King-Jalis-Ironhammer/first#post4758734
Would love a dev response again on this thread. The thread has started circling around because it is 6 pages deep and people can’t be bothered to read other posts so they end up posting the same things as others. Then it is discussed for a few posts, then repeated again. Until we have more information this thread I think has run its course.
Well, I think they’ll likely stay away from Human, Charr, Asura, Norn, or Sylvari legends to keep it race neutral. Here are the ones I like the most (many mentioned already).
Glint - for legendary dragon stance and she has a lot of history
Kanaxi - was epic boss in factions with a unique and great look. Would love his return
Optimus Caliph - for legendary Mursaat stance as he was widely theorized to be the leader of the Mursaat seen in GW1
Shiro Tagachi - I know he was human, but he was so epic that I hope they allow for a human legend!
Currently there are 3 Legends.
Look again. The one you have ?? on is just Mallyx on cooldown. That screenshot shows switching from Jalis to Mallyx.
Another article with some additional info. A few tidbits
-and the spirits your harnessing themselves will talk to you like you’re actually possessing them…Each Legend has their voiceover effects added.
-[energy] recharges at 5 per second, with a max of 100 (all numbers are of course subject to change)
-The team also tried to add passive perks to each Legend, but it just didn’t work and could tend to bog people down into using just one legend.
- Roy noted that the mobility of the Revenant in combat is a lot like the Thief’s out of combat… but he’s definitely not as mobile as the Thief when not in a fight drawing upon the Mists.
-Skills that were not given in the blog are:
MACE: Searing Fissure – You’ll slam down, creating pulsing area of burning fire. Essentially, it’s like an actual crack in the earth that burns a ton of enemies in front of you, and leaves a burning condition on them as well.
MACE: Echoing Erruption – With this the player jumps into the air, slamming into the ground, and creates a shockwave that cascades out from the landing point into waves with each wave doing damage. Like Searing Fissure and other Mace skills, this is about lining enemies up and blasting them with finishers.
HAMMER: Drop the Hammer – This one is a ground targeted AOE knockdown. You target a large area, swing your hammer, and then a giant Mist hammer comes swirling out of the nether knocks everyone in that area down. It’s only got a 15 second cooldown for now, but a higher Energy cost… still, imagine this in WvW?
AXE: Frigid Blitz – This allows the player to hurl an ice axe through the air, chilling everyone (slowing them), and when it reaches the actual highlighted target you teleport to him and do a melee spinning attack that ends up behind the enemy, chilling him too. A key thing Jon noted is that you can use one Axe skill mentioned in the blog to pull together a clump of enemies, and then use this to go through them all and wind up at the rear-most one.
Some really good stuff there!
I doubt this is the case.
I believe the new class has unities like all other classes. Its just they have different effects based on your “stance” or channels in this case.
Bring a dev-quote if you have one!
There are several quotes in this thread which completely rule that out:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Lets-Chat-Revenant-Masters-of-the-MistAll five skills will be locked to the current Legend, you will ALWAYS have a Legend channeled. You can only swap between two, and their respective skill sets. There is no off button, and no slotting your own skills.
This isn’t entirely set in stone that they are completely unchangeable. Roy said it wasn’t decided yet in the below quote. I’m hoping that each legend will have 5 utility skills to choose from, and you have to choose 3. That gives slight customization while still fitting their theme.
From player: When I am invoking Bob the Mighty, will I have a Bob-themed pool of skills to choose from when filling out my right-hand tray, or does channeling Bob the Mighty give me an absolutely specific set of 5 skills without variation from any other Revenant invoking Bob?
I realize the answer may be different for buttons 6 and 0 than it is for buttons 7, 8, & 9.
From Roy: That is not set in stone yet and something we are deciding still.
Why do we need another thread on the same thing? Especially since there are two that cover this on the first page of the HoT forum page (one with an almost identical name) this thread is incredibly redundant and cluttering the pages. See these…

Shiro (my absolute favorite choice for a high DPS legend)
Gadd
Dorick
Togo (Would love his “Dragon Empire Rage” skill)
Koss
Odran
Having your avatar act against your will have been a thing since release though.
Taunt seems to basically be an opposite Fear. Instead of running away, you are running towards the foe.Yes, I am no fan of Fear either, and see this as doubling down on it. At least with fear though, you move away from the enemy. This can be dangerous in some cases, but it’s more a defensive maneuver, you’re more likely to be safer running away, and you just end up dealing less damage. Forcing a player to run into the enemy is far more suicidal, it forces you to just take whatever the enemy cares to serve to you. I am no fan of this.
This means you’ll want to keep a stun breaker on your bar, or stability. I see this as making people be more cognizant of their build and play style, which in turn is a good thing. Makes being a mindless beserker or glass cannon a bit more dangerous which is yet another good thing in my opinion.
Will Skill Scrolls still be of use in HoT?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Invictus.1503
Why wouldn’t they be? They said skill points are still used in the same way and although you won’t gain SP at a level up beyond 80, they said they would gain other ways to get SP. So, with that I see no reason why Skill Scrolls would change in any way. In fact, I expect them to drop even more commonly as a primary source of additional SPs.
I agree that stability will likely stop this as well. That said, not sure how it would ruin these any more than fear. Taunt is essentially just fear in the other direction.
I can surely see this as one of the legends, and one based on direct damage DPS. Shiro was epic, and an assassin. I really hope they use him.
The skills on the right half of your bar are tied to the legend which you are currently invoking.
Lets see if I can phrase this unambiguously:
When I am invoking Bob the Mighty, will I have a Bob-themed pool of skills to choose from when filling out my right-hand tray, or does channeling Bob the Mighty give me an absolutely specific set of 5 skills without variation from any other Revenant invoking Bob?
I realize the answer may be different for buttons 6 and 0 than it is for buttons 7, 8, & 9.
That is not set in stone yet and something we are deciding still.
As noted earlier in the thread if there isn’t a choice it appears the revenant will feature less customisation than other classes and may be quite inflexible.
There options really are the legends you bring which offer unique playstyles and skills, I can see your point though.
I wish to echo this idea. I really hope you are considering giving at least some options per legend. Don’t get me wrong, I love the legend idea, but they are right now seeming too much like pre-made builds per legend.
Perhaps something small. Of the 3 utility skills, give 5 options. That way you aren’t added a huge amount of skills, but my Jalis could still be slightly different than the next guy’s Jalis, which gives me a few customization options.
thanks for the answer, but i didnt understood yet xD
with quickness, u do the attack faster, and the opposite should be slow, but with chill u will attack slower too :S
Chill does not increase skill activation times. It only makes you move slower and increases cool downs. Chill doesn’t make your attack itself slower, but makes it so you can’t use the skill as often. Slow actually makes your attack itself slower (meaning that you are easier to interrupt).
So apparently revenants existed before Zhaitan died but simultaneously only came into being after he was killed, huh?
Sounds like Rytlock accidentally knocked over a bowl of wibbily wobbly, timey wimey stuff. That’ll be a pain to clean up.
So does this mean Rytlock has become a Time Lord?
There is now an answer to the question Dr. Who….it’s Rytlock!
It has been mentioned in other forum posts, but the answer is this. Chill reduces speed and increases cooldown. Slow increases activation time of skills. Slow is the opposite of Quickness.

-Taunt is just another CC. It’s something new, it’s something unique. Alternatively they could’ve just given him another Fear or whatever. A CC is a CC.
I disagree. As a dagger wielding necro, I’ve often wished that my fear would make them run towards me rather than away. I want to draw in those ranged kittens. You might then say it is like a pull, but no, it locks their skills for a duration. I can see this condition being rather strong in certain instances.
I’m probably 100% right when I say it will be a gemstore skin,
This is a rather redundant statement when there are only two choices to begin with. It is either in the gemstore or it isn’t, there isn’t a degree in between.
I don’t know how many legends will be there but if every one of them is different in playstyle (conditions, power, hybrid) this is going to cost a lot for armors, trinkets and weapons, except if you go hybrid. I think it’ll cost too much, hope not.
Celestrial will likely be a popular stat for armor and weapons.
There was no talk about it simply delaying a condition. Thus I think the condition remains and continues to tick down it’s duration. The only real change is that the negative effects of the condition do not apply to you while you have Resistance on. Two examples:
1) You have bleeding with a duration of 3 seconds. After 1 of those seconds you get Resistance that lasts for 1 second. When resistance goes away, you receive the last 1 second of bleeding damage
2)You have bleeding with a duration of 3 seconds. After 1 of those seconds you get Resistance that lasts for 4 second. The bleeding condition will wear off while you still have resistance and when resistance ends, you do not get bleeding again from that condition.
-The 6-10 could have completely separate load-out depending on your legend, and you can only choose from a small sub-set per-legend. This might cause some confusion with cooldowns. (are they shared or not)
As for cooldowns, I don’t think they have cool downs. I think the 6-10 skills will be purely based on whether you have the energy to use them. Very similar to how initiative works on the weapon skills of thieves. I base this on the following quote:
This energy bar is a new resource that the revenant relies on in order to use skills. Some skills will have a low energy cost, allowing you to use them more often, while others have a large cost with a very large payoff.
There is one thing still very confusing to me about this blog post.
It sounds like the Revenant gets way less customization than other classes. As per usual your first five skills are determined by your weapon, but unlike other classes they said your second five skills are determined by your legend. Are they determined only by your legend? As in, you pick a legend and get the five skills that come with it? Or will there be a selectable loadout of skills within each legend? And if so how many per legend?
I was thinking the same thing. In my opinion it would be very bad design for the new profession to have only fixed utility and heal skills. Unless you could choose the skills from a fixed pool which would be interesting and cool idea.
If you look at the UI, you can see little up arrows on the utility skills. I assume this means you will have at least some variety in which utility skills you’ll choose depending on the legend unlocked.
This was my initial thought as well, that builds would be very limited. However the little arrows give me hope. then the question becomes how many options will you have per legend? I’m also curious how this will reflect in the Hero’s Panel when you go to choose your skills.
I just want to know why everyone cares more about ridiculous theories for Revenants getting their own story/starter zone than they do about a very plausible and useful idea of a build saver…
You have to understand, this is a topic that has been discussed, discussed again, and discussed even more over the years. I created a topic after the first few weeks of launch about it and have seen many many more over the life of this game. Revenant is something new, and something confirmed to be coming so of course there will be discussions talking about every little aspect of it.
Personally, I’m tired of talking about a build saver. Not because I don’t want it or think it would be useful, but because I’ve said everything I can over the years and I suspect a lot of people feel the same.
Revenant means: The one who returned
Yes, “revenant” does mean “a person who has returned.” However we are talking about the title given to a profession as a proper noun of Revenant, which carries a more profound meaning that makes it a profession.
Bottom line, when using the proper noun version of Revenant you are referring to a person who has more than just returned, but somebody who has returned with very specific qualities that define them as a Revenant.
In other words, all 9 of my characters and the thousands of people who play WvW are revenants, but none of them are Revenants
(edited by Invictus.1503)
The npc in Rata Sum the Mist War Recruiter has been to mists and back so he’s pretty much revenant as well.
Going to the mists and coming back does not a Revenant make. Anybody can do this easily…there are portals in Lion’s Arch that go to the mists and come back. GW1 has frequent visiting to the mists as well.

Have none of you realized that the PS NEVER mentions what your class is, so there is NO lore issue with you being in the full existing PS story as a Revenant (beyond the Rytlock is the first one issue).
Other than the fact that the personal story is set more or less the year before the death of zhaitan (culminating in his death of course), S1 is set in the year after zhaitans death, and S2 two years after it. Presumably HoT takes place 2-3 years after the events of the personal story, so you know the kinda the timeline lore is out of sync.
except it’s not.
you guys keep reading “rytlock is the first revenant” as “the first revenant in the lore”, when they mean “the first revenant you’ve seen in-game”.
the revenant’s powers have been in lore for several centuries. it not being an option until now for players doesn’t make it non-existent.
I think it is a fair inference. They said he is the first Revenant and has returned to the mists to teach others the ways of the Revenant.
most importantly, what’s its dance going to be?
Dances are based on race, not profession. So the answer to your question is, whatever the dance is for the race you choose for your Revenant
How many of these threads are going to be created?! It isn’t even like the threads are buried, they are on the first 1 and 2 pages. Hopefully a moderator will close a few of them or at least merge them.

I’ve said it before on similar threads, but although I’d love something special so that it doesn’t mess with timelines, in the end I think it is simple.
Revenant intro during char. selection will briefly talk about learning his skills in the mist and then when coming back to the world they found themselves a few years in the past. Done, end of story. This is, of course, assuming that Anet even cares at all about continuity.
Didn’t they say shortly after they made trait respecs free that they’ll work on it?
I believe they did. They have also said they are redoing the traits before HoT’s launch. With any luck, the templates is part of the trait redo.

There is another thread on this same topic. Frankly when I think Druid, I think the Shapeshifting Druid from D&D.
Wishful thinking on my part is that in the video shown, we didn’t see a Druid and his pet. We saw two Druids, one in human form wielding the staff, and the other in wolf form. Neither had a pet because the pet mechanic is removed when specializing in Druid.
It’s a far shot, but perhaps Anet was being sneaky
This is exactly what I want too. When I think Druid, I think the D&D style druid which was heavily invested in shapeshifting abilities.
Wishful thinking, maybe in the video that everybody thinks was a Druid and his pet, perhaps it was two Druids (one in humanoid form, the other in a beast form). Then that could very well mean that the Druid doesn’t have a pet mechanic after all, they are their own “pet”
If they make it character bound in any way shape or form I will not buy the expansion. I hated with the fiery passion of King Adelbern the current trait system and I’m still waiting for them to change it.
They specifically stated that the trait system will be redone by HoT.
There have been several requests for this feature since the games release. I can’t believe it hasn’t been added yet. It is a major feature so I would think if it was in HoT they would have announced it. Perhaps it will be in a Feature Patch before the release of HoT.
It would be even more useful in HoT since they are adding Specialization.
Ok, so I was hugely psyched about Stronghold, up until watching the Ready Up. It isn’t the gameplay that has turned me off, but one simple statement. Stronghold won’t have its own queue, it will share the queue with the current Conquest mode. This means that if I want to play Stronghold, I can’t without taking a very large chance to get into a match I don’t want to play (many more Conquest maps than Stronghold maps).
Anet, please reconsider. This has taken my excitement level down quite a few notches. I don’t like conquest, but used to love the GvG in GW1, which it seems Stronghold is largely based on. In the end, if it isn’t separated out, I’ll likely simply not play it. I suspect a lot of people are like me and some may even play, but just quit or AFK if they don’t get the Stronghold match they wanted.
Yes, I opened a topic about it, share it “Anet : When will you learn your lesson ?” !
I saw that after posting this. Though to be fair, this topic on Strongholds was opened days before the one you opened.
That is my theory, but I think it dangerous to assume as much lest we get our hopes up. I can see it working either way, but hold on to my theory that it will be a weapon set for each profession.
My hopes have been dashed with this ready-up. I’m not a fan of conquest, but was a fan of the old GW1 GvG style. The explanation of Stronghold reminded me of that style play so I was very excited. Now that it seems it isn’t it’s own game mode like advertised, but just a map in the rotation.
I’ll not be joining into this. Don’t want to play game modes I don’t enjoy just for the chance play a mode I like.
Anet, please reconsider!
