Staves are really a nasty weapon in the right hands. There is an old Chinese story of the greatest swordsman in all the lands who only lost one fight, and that was to a vagabond wielding a quarterstaff.

I’ve wanted a melee staff for a long time, so I’m very happy to see it coming.

Although I would love to fight Trahearn, I doubt it. He will be one of the Sylvari who can resist the corruption and will likely have to go in hiding at first to avoid being persecuted by others who think he is corrupted. His part in the plot will likely be in helping to protect his fellow Sylvari race.

The Sylvari we know that will likely lead that army (and you may be right from where) is Faolain. She will keep her personality and intelligence, but gain more power and become a champion of Mordromoth’s sylvari army.

How was it implied we would learn from Rytlock?

If you mean the collective “we” then it wasn’t implied, it was outright stated during PAX. If you are referring to the individual, well Rytlock will have taught his first students then I’m sure they would continue teaching others, so in a sense he still is teaching each of us who are Revenants.

Revenant Speculations

Invictus.1503

Revenant chooses 3 out of a pool of legends, similar to Ranger and pets.

The legend changes the back half of skill bar.

So Heals, utilities, and Elites all function as a sort of Glyph that changes based on what Channel you are in.

they said that channeling a legend will change the skills, not change the way they work. I still have hope…

They also made a distinction between channeling the mists to power your skills, and channeling legends. Perhaps legends are transforms or something similar that changes the skills all together, and channeling the mists adjusts skills. Or perhaps a combination. Maybe you choose your legend (or two) and when you channel the mist to power your skills, it changes the skills themselves, then when you actually channel the legend the skills change completely.

Let's talk: Underwater content in HoT

Invictus.1503

Under water content is too hard and doesn’t fit into the NPE.

Seriously though, I’d love for under water combat to be fixed and brought back into the mainstream. Before the launch of the game, it was advertised as a breakthu and something to really look forward to in the game. I think they just ran out of time during production and had to release a half finished product for under water and have never made the time to go back and fix it (probably because they feel their players have all but abandoned the idea as well).

The day they removed the large water section of WvW I knew it wasn’t going to be fixed. I really hope they someday return to it and make it what I know it could be.

Invictus.1503

So, perhaps I’m missing something simple that you can help me with here. The Revenant is confirmed to be able to channel him from the mists as a legendary hero, however this implies that he is dead (and therefore in the mists). When did this happen. At the end of GW1, he had transformed himself with all the other dwarves to fight the destroyers, but there is nothing about his death.

It is also known that the dwarves are still fighting (or heavily implied anyway) and known that old age will not take them in this form. So, did he die and there are no legends known about it, or has it been said somewhere that I simply am not aware of at the moment. Perhaps there is some other explanation that will make itself known. But I figured our resident lore gurus might be able to shed some light on this for me. Thanks!

Revenant and Hammer?

It feels like they should be able to use hammer, but who knows. That troll spear could have been a remodelled hammer.

Actually, it’d be cool if we got Rytlock classic Sword and Pistol combo as part of the revenant class.

I’m really hoping that troll spear was actually a staff used in melee. I’d take a melee staff over a hammer a hundred times over. I expect weapon choice will be limited for the Revenant and if I get a melee staff, I’m fine with anything else they want to give or leave out.

Invictus.1503

A bit more information from a recent interview. Sounds to me like it is a partial transform when channeling a legend in that weapon skills remain, but heal/utility/elite skills are changed. Though I wonder if this means that the skills are static per legend, or if the legend changes how each of these skills you chose functions a bit. I’m guessing the later and that seems VERY interesting to me.

“Johanson explains to me: “[Channelling a legend] actually changes out the entire back-half of your skillbar, so your heal skill, your utilities and your elite are all determined by the Legend you are currently channelling.” Apparently there are traits that “play off” these abilities and combo strongly.

How many Legends the Revenant will be able to call upon hasn’t yet been decided. A few more or many more? “We’ll just have to see,” he says squirming a little. Johanson was similarly coy about how the Revenant would actually mechanically channel Legends and switches between them."

With these new collections, we were curious if the precursors would still be obtainable through other means such as drops and the Mystic Forge where they are currently acquired. The original precursors will definitely remain available through those means, but the new precursors will be different and revealed when they are ready to roll out the new legendary weapons. The collections are just a very clear path that outlines every step to getting a precursor, which Colin says is important to them as well as a bulk of players that will see these collections as an epic journey to crafting their precursor. For the handful of players that like to roll the dice and play the Mystic Forge, those options will still be available for the original precursors for those who enjoy that and find it an exciting experience.

Will new precursors not be available at all via MF? Also, old precursor not available thru collections?

I read it as old precursors will be available through both MF and the collections, new ones only through collections.

I read it this way as well, and really hope that is the case. This would make Legendary weapons (new ones anyway) show the effort put into it rather than just a sign that you have lots of money/gold. Especially if the bulk of the things within the pre-cursor collections are things that cannot be sold on the TP.

Have to admit there is a certain appeal to that (especially in zerg play both in PvE and WvW). Can’t see them doing this, but kudos for the excellent idea.

It’s possible that the Revenant is also a one-weapon only class like Elementalist or Engineer. Their Utility skills are a bunch of “Summon” skills, which alter the effects of their weapon (maybe skills 4-5 change depending on which Legend you’re channeling), and their Elite skill are Elite Summons, such as Mallyx.

Some Summons might also be transform skills, and they alter your entire bar.

I’ve thought of similar aspects, but the problem I run into with this is that, mechanically, this sounds way too similar to elementalist attunements. That said, I do believe this class will not have weapon swap activated though.

Invictus.1503

Anyways, we can’t be sure Revenants use swords, as NPCs – especially Rytlock – and not limited to player profession limitations. As a warrior, Rytlock used a pistol offhand – giving him mechanical access to warrior and thief skills (he used thief pistol 4 and 5 skills with his warrior sword skills 1, 2, and 3).

It isn’t just Rytlock having a sword that confirms the sword, because yes they have allowed special NPC break the normal weapon rules. But if you look the official HoT page (https://heartofthorns.guildwars2.com/en/?_ga=1.22450553.337407818.1416884160) they have a human looking Revenant that is also wielding a sword. If they don’t give Revenant a sword, they’ll have a riot.

As for the mechanic of the F1-4 I’m still up in the air. I really hope it isn’t a static hero you channel as that would limit the heroes to only 4 which would be sad to me.

It might be interesting if various traits change your F1-4 skills. Though honestly I’m not sure exactly how this would work. I’m just trying to figure something out that doesn’t get too close to the utility belt F1-4 skills of the Engi or the attunements of the Ele.

Invictus.1503

I’m intrigued with the new profession coming up and would love to see some speculations on the class mechanics.

We know:
-Heavy Armor
-Channels the powers of the mists
-Uses Sword
-Can channel legends of dead heroes, Malyxx and Jalis confirmed which will change how the Revenant plays (Malyxx for conditions, Jalis for tanky confirmed)

What I’d like to speculate on primarily are:
-Class mechanic (how the F1-F4 skills will work)
-What it means to channel a dead heroes (how and what will it actually change)
-How will we choose who to channel? If it is based on F1-F4 skills then that means it will be limited to only 4. If not tied to those skills permanently then to what are they tied?
-Weapons that may be used (personally I’m convinced they will have staff that is mêlée as shown in the video as I do not believe that was meant to be a spear)
-Any fun speculation on skills we might or want to see

If your war was made before the April 15 patch last year keep him and get a new slot. Characters made after April 15 have to do the new trait system, which is really frustrating.

They said they are getting rid of the current trait system at the launch of HoT in favor of a simpler system. Whether this means they will go back to the old style, a slight variation of the old style, or something new (and possibly better or worse) system is yet to be determined.

Not the same weapon (trailer has pointy end and 4 crossed spikes), but could be along those lines. Personally I think it is a new staff skin. Would love to see the staff used as a melee weapon.

The animations and the sound certainly don’t appear to support the “spear” theory though. It is being wielded as a blunt weapon. If it were a spear it should be using a piercing animation.

@Invictus

Thank you for the explanation, the name revenant does make more sense. This however raises other concerns.

With all the other professions are named according to the archetype they represent, will new players understand that the new revenant profession will be based on the death knight archetype when the name originates from an in game event ?

Well to answer your question, that depends on the person’s vocabulary skills (or ability to type a word into google). If they know the meaning of the word, I would assume that most could infer that the mechanic is based on either visiting the realm of the dead and returning, or probably more accurate to play style, bringing the dead to the realm of the living.

please don’t take my answer as sarcastic or demeaning as it wasn’t intended that way, though in rereading it I can see it may look that way

- Shiro Tagachi since we know he was last in the Realm of Torment like Mallyx, so accessible through the Mists (we did kill him there though)

- Master Togo, just cuz GW2 needs an Uncle Iroh character.

- Kuunavang. The dragon other than Glint Rytlock could be channeling in the trailer?

- Turai Ossa. C’mon, they already have his character model

Someone mentioned Palawa Joko, but I believe the lore is that he’s still running things in Elona.

Shiro is the underworldish area, that area was disconnected from the mists to seal evil things like abaddon and corrupted angels and spirits and stuff. I don’t think you can channel anything from there.
Kormir said she’d clean the place up, but since we haven’t heard from her since…

Don’t be so sure Mallyxx is confirmed and he was last seen in the Domain of Anguish which is the area you are referencing.

Though I don’t think they will summon much in the respect of turret piece, but probably more of an aura on/around the Revenant. I’m very much looking forward to this profession if this is the case.

I believe the mechanical difference here is that it will be a heavy buff class. Ritualist had a lot of spirits that buffed and debuffed. When the engi took over as the “new ritualist” it took over the turrets, but only the offensive (with little defense) mechanics. I think the Reverant will take the idea of channeling spirits to enhance or debuff, not necessarily as attacks themselves.

Example: Pain spirit of ritualist is like the rifle turrent. However there is no engi version of a Union spirit. i think this is where the Reverant will come in (though it won’t likely be a turrent style spirit, but an aura emmitted from the Reverant itself).

That was my thought originally. When their team was smaller in size, they could ship 1 complete expansion every 6 month with the GW1 model, with complete campains, professions, maps, new skills, etc.

This is a common misconception and, being a bit of an “unofficial historian” for ArenaNet, I want to post the actual release dates for our games and the one expansion we’ve released so far:

  • Guild Wars: April 28, 2004
  • Guild Wars Factions (second standalone campaign): April 28, 2005
  • Guild Wars Nightfall (third standalone campaign): October 27, 2006
  • Guild Wars: Eye of the North (first and only expansion pack): October 27, 2006

Then:

  • Guild Wars 2: August 28, 2012

Your mileage may have varied by a few days if you pre-ordered a game or the expansion pack, but those are the official release dates and as you can see at no time did we have a release cadence of every six months.

Just setting the record straight.

Gwen, you might want to check the dates. I know that Nightfall did not release on the same date/year as Eye of the North.

So, since Rytlock is the first Revenant, and he went to the mists roughly 2 years after the original Personal Story, how will they be able to play the Personal Story? Perhaps it is planned that they simply won’t be able to play the original Personal Story, but I’m curious. If this is the case, then technically they wouldn’t be able to be referred to as “Commander”

It's going to be a long wait...

I expect early Q3 release (hope earlier, but that is my guess)

So channeling the spirits of legendary ancient heroes, gaining different skills based on the hero you are channeling.

I thought we already had Ele’s and Engi’s. Maybe it would’ve been good to explain what makes Revenant so different from these two professions.

Agreed, we need some mechanics. Likely we’ll be getting it soon in the same way they announced the 8 professions originally. Looking forward to it, hopefully it is announced soon.

This is a bug. You can post in the bug forum, but by now it is known. I had the same problem and had to exit and re-enter the instance 8 times before it finally showed up.

It’s a Golemancer. Though specifically it looks like inspiration for Taimi to me.
