I believ the earmuffs are now part of the Winter Outfit, which you should have unlocked (and received in your inventory) if you talked to a Black Lion Armor Specialist with a character wearing the earmuffs.

Wondering what kind of a build this was

in Players Helping Players

Jornophelanthas.1475

What I noticed is that this person had 25 stacks of a stat bonus typically awarded by a sigil. They had apparently upgraded their weapon with a (minor?) sigil of bloodlust, which gives +5 power for every kill made, up to 25×5 = 125 bonus power.

What is unusual is that it should not be possible for level 1 characters to receive any new items from anywhere else. The only thing I can think of is that a friend (on a different account) sent this player an item or two through in-game mail.

Normally, level 1 players should not have any builds at all; all they have is their starter armor and main-hand weapon, a single heal skill and nothing else.

My short review to the crown pavilion

in Festival of the Four Winds

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

Last year, the Pavillion awarded far too much loot (because it coincided with the introduction of champion loot bags). This was a BAD THING, because it caused severe inflation in the game economy.
ArenaNet is currently preventing that from happening again by regulating the loot from the Pavillion’s frequently-spawning champions.

Last year, the Pavillion champions were most efficiently defeated with a single massive group of players that took down the bosses one at a time, and never had to pause in between. This is a BAD THING, because killing the same series of pushover bosses over and over again with 150 players at once was not challenging, and gave out too many rewards. It actually discouraged play skill.
ArenaNet is currently preventing that from happening again by encouraging players to split up during the Boss Blitz. Yes, a single zerg will spend 30 minutes killing all bosses one at a time. If players split up, the event can be won in a shorter time (because the bosses don’t scale up as far), and the reward will be bigger. In other words, it rewards smart play rather than follow-the-other-lemmings.

So in short, the REAL PROBLEM was last year’s event for being too easy and too generous.

LA has no guild bank

The only guild bank NPC I found in Lion’s Arch is in the Vigil Chapterhouse, directly east of the WvW & Mists portals, clustered with a group of various guild service NPCs.

The closest regular banker NPC is across the huge pit that is the center of Fort Mariner (and crafting stations that can serve as banks are inside that pit).

I already posted a thread about this (link: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Guild-Bank-in-Lion-s-Arch-very-inconvenient/first#post4041850), and I also suggested a solution: to please add more Guild Bank NPCs to Canal Ward and Mystic Plaza.

Guild Bank in Lion's Arch very inconvenient

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

The revived Lion’s Arch currently has multiple locations for various key services, such as crafting stations, Bankers, Black Lion Traders and various guild service NPCs.

Unfortunately, the Guild Bank NPC is not one of them. There is only a single Guild Banker in Lion’s Arch, and he’s tucked away in the Vigil Chapterhouse (southeast of the WvW asura gates).

This is extremely inconvenient, as the Guild Banker is now not located right next to a Banker (like all other major cities offer, including pre-Scarlet Lion’s Arch). Additionally, there is currently no Guild Banker near the Mystic Forge either (although there is a regular Banker).

My suggestion is to add a few Guild Bank NPCs to Lion’s Arch, preferable near locations that already have multiple Bank NPCs. This should include Canal Ward at the very least, but preferably also Mystic Plaza and Farshore Ward.
Additionally, please move the Guild Bank NPC at Fort Marriner closer to the Bank and Black LionTrader NPCs there.

I think the HoM webpage lists EXACTLLY what you earn when linking accounts (even what you have not attained yet) and as I recall, all you need is a GW1 character name to view them.

Almost. You need a GW1 character name from an account that has unlocked the Hall of Monuments (i.e. purchased Eye of the North expansion, visited the Hall of Monuments at least once, and used at least one tapestry fragment to unlock a monument).
The link to that webpage is: https://hom.guildwars2.com/

(Also, if you want to actually reap the rewards in Guild Wars 2, you need to link your GW and GW2 accounts together through your Guild Wars 2 account management page: https://account.guildwars2.com/login. Just performing the link awards 3 out of a possible 50 reward points.)

Should I stop playing?

IF your doctor advises you to stop doing things that cause pain in your left arm, AND
IF playing Guild Wars 2 causes pain in your left arm, THEN
you should stop playing Guild Wars 2.

Doing otherwise means questioning the judgment of your doctor, which you probably shouldn’t do unless you have a medical degree yourself (and even then, probably not).

(The only exception I can think of is to play GW2 in such a way that there is a 0% chance to further aggravate your left arm. Such as playing with your left arm physically restrained (in a medically approved way, such as a sling) to prevent any accidental reaching for the keyboard/mouse. And even then, run it by the doctor first.)

(Also, if your doctor’s advice pertains to Guild Wars 2, it probably also extends to computer use in general.)

The elementalist is not what you know as a “mage”.

Yes, you can use a staff that has large areas of effect that can target multiple enemies.

But the elementalist can also use a scepter, which is mostly single-target damage at medium range, and a dagger, which is mostly melee-range burst damage.

Whichever weapon you choose, the elementalist can switch between four sets of weapon skills, each with its own flavor. (Fire is damage and burning, water is healing and freezing, air is weakening and blinding, and earth is protection and bleeding damage.)

The elementalist is a jack-of-all-trades, not (just) the “mage” from other games.

Also, the elementalist’s “control” effects are more along the lines of slowing enemies down or briefly knocking them down, rather than using conditions such as Fear, Torment or Confusion (which take away enemies’ control over their actions). That’s more the mesmer profession’s area.
—-
The warrior, guardian and ranger are probably the easiest professions to learn.
The elementalist, engineer and mesmer are probably the most complex professions to learn.
(The thief and necromancer are somewhere in the middle.)
—-
Whichever profession you choose, you should realize that it can fulfill each of the roles of damage, control and support, depending on which skills you equip. (Most skills are tied to the weapons you equip, but not all.) For the complete experience, try out all the weapons a profession can use, and see which work best for you.

Have you submitted a ticket about the account hack/wipe? It may be possible to get everything back through account restoration.

Additionally (and more importantly), having ArenaNet investigate your account activity may help hackers from accessing it in the future as well. For all you know, your account may currently still be used for gold selling when you are offline, and everything you earn may be syphoned away within a few days.

Also, change your password (if you haven’t already), and make sure you don’t use your new password for anything else.

Then again, a trade system does invalidate several advantages of the BLT, such as WTSpam

Since a trade window would get used to some extent, and would attract some use at the expense of sales that could otherwise have gone through the BLTP, I would say:

- The role of tradepost tax as a major goldsink diminishes —> increased risk of inflation of the game economy;
- Scamming increases as trade window offers more abuse opportunities than tradepost;
- Hackers/dupers try to abuse trade window to dupe expensive items (as has been done in other games) and sell these on the tradepost --> more damage to game economy;
- The efficiency of the tradepost server is that it only needs to connect to one player at a time for each transaction, which hardly interferes with the game server. Trade window requires simultaneous synchronized connection to two players —> cannot be done efficiently through a separate server --> more load on game servers;
- In addition to the above point, now add overflows/megaservers and people from different game servers wanting to trade —> separate game servers that need to synchronize --> even more server load (And you thought guild banks were sluggish…);
- WTS spam in chat appears, and pollutes chat channes;
- WTS spam in chat encourages more players to use trade windows instead of trading post —> snowball effect, strengthening all the above;

(Of course, all these arguments are illogical, for reasons already explained.)

I’d say Mesmer, they can be good at both close & ranged combat, plus act as a healer! They can dish it out and still prove group support.

Elementalist are just to soft, without support in dungeons or group battles they will fail.

One disadvantage of mesmers is that their clones hinder their ability to fight multiple opponents at once; there will always be a main target.

Regarding elementalists: I can’t attest to their survivability in WvW and PvP. However, my elementalist can handle himself quite well in dungeons and fractals. The trick there is to not get attacked, and secondly to not get hit if you are. Regardless of whether I use staff, scepter, dagger or focus (or any combination), I do not go down more often than other players. I frequently switch between weapons and utility skills between combats, though, in order to adapt to the situation.

town clothes and toys. where post wardrobe?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

The town clothes and toy item slots on your character are no longer accessible. However, the items you have equipped can still be converted.

Go to one of the 5 racial cities and find the Black Lion Trader NPC there. Nearby will be a Black Lion Armorer NPC. Talk to that one. It will offer you the option to convert your town clothes to the new wardrobe system.

Here is what will happen:

- Each piece of the regular town clothes (the ones you got on character creation) will be turned into a tonic with infinite uses. Looks created by tonics cannot be dyed or combined with anything else.

- Each piece of the Rider’s Outfit will become a Rider’s Outfit piece, which can be equipped in the new “Outfit” item slot on your Hero screen. This functions more or less like town clothing, except you can no longer mix and match the various parts (as it is only one slot).

- Each toy (like the riding broom) will become a bundle item in your inventory with infinite uses that changes your skill bar to the toy’s skills.

- Most town clothing head items will be converted to armor skin items, which are also immediately added to your wardrobe. This means you can now use these head items in combat, and you are no longer limited to the single item you purchased. (It costs 1 transmutation charge to change the look of a weapon or armor piece, and the skin item you get on conversion can be used to get one free transmute.)

I totally agree however that the Elementalist is probably the most versatile class on the surface, due to it’s ability to summon weapons and switch elements, what have you, but then an Engineer can use a skill to become a combat medic one moment, and another skill to pull out a Flamethrower, whilst dealing and deflecting damage with main weapons.

I don’t know really how a warrior can be thought of as a Jack of All Trades though… They don’t really have the ability to be a healer.

Engineers have a very versatile rang of skills and options, but melee combat is not one of them. All their weapon and kit skills work best outside of melee range (except Toolkit, which happens to strongly interact with turrets – which also work best at range).

Warriors can play a support role (which includes healing), by the way. A shout build warrior can heal with shouts, as well as remove conditions with a specific shout (“Shake It Off!”). Banners can offer boons, as well as a mass revive effect (the elite banner skill).

People have already tried this with him. His argument will be that the email trading system is way too scammable and a player to player system will be more secure.

What he fails to understand is that there will be a net increase in scams even with a more secure system as a higher percentage of players will use it, thinking that it’s secure because it’s specifically designed for trading.

He doesn’t understand that a lower failure rate together with a higher rate of use means more scams, not less.

Any attempt to explain this to him results in him saying illogical and ignoring the point.

The problem is that the OP tends to compare a player-to-player trade window option to the strawman alternative that makes it look more favourable. Some examples:

- If people mention disadvantage X about trade windows, then he will compare trade windows to in-game mail transactions, which are even worse at X (ignoring any comparison with the trade post, which eliminates X.)

- If people mention disadvantage Y about trade windows, then he will compare trade windows to the trade post, which has disadvantage Z in comparison to trade windows (and ignoring any further mention of disadvantage Y, as well as any mention of in-game mail or guildbanks, which happen to not have disadvantage Z at all.)

This is false rhetoric, and more aimed at illegitimately disqualifying all other opinions, in order to reach the “inevitable” solution that there is only a single possible valid opinion, which happens to be the one held by the OP.

To argue against such a “debater” (in a loose sense of the word) is pointless, as any argument you present will be misconstrued, turned into a strawman, and dismissed out of hand over the course of an abrasive rant.

Frankly, I am even wondering why this thread is not in the “Black Lion Trade Post” forum, or even in “General Discussion”. The “Players Helping Players” forum is just about the last place to choose in order to post a suggestion to the game developers. After all, it is mostly frequented by helpful players who are friendly enough to point out potential flaws in such suggestions/opinions.

"Jack of all Trades" profession?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

In my opinion, the elementalist is the profession with the biggest “jack of all trades” vibe. Here are some arguments:

- The elementalist has access to melee-range (daggers), medium range (scepter) and long-range (staff) attacks, though never more than one range at a time.
- The elementalist can switch between four attunements (fire, water, air, earth) during combat, each with its own emphases. (E.g. fire is about area damage and burning, water is about chilling enemies and healing, air is about speed and inflicting vulnerability/blindness/stun, and earth is about protection and inflicting bleeding.)
- The elementalist can focus on offensive and defensive builds, and can build for solo and cooperative play. This is facilitated through the traits the elementalist can choose from.
- The elementalist’s only true specialty lies in providing combos, as the elementalist is one of very few professions that is able to provide multiple combo fields and blast finishers in a single combat.

The elementalist only has about average damage, and subpar defensive stats (armor and health). This is why many people complain that the elementalist requires a defensive playstyle. This is not true for PvE, however, as any build can work there. (And additionally, the elementalist can use utility skills to gain various defensive abilities.) And a fully offensively built elementalist can deal large amounts of damage.

You can go in many directions with an elementalist:
Offensive area damage, mobile defense, condition damage, party support, self-combo maneuver specialist, and melee dagger fighter are all possibilities. Usually, you can mix these up, sometimes even during combat.

Town Clothing Tonics and Wide Rim Glasses

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

The Wide Rim Glasses have been converted to armor skins in exactly the same way as the other town clothes headgear (e.g. Reading Glasses, Pink Quaggan Hat, Sailor’s Beanie, etc.). The only difference is that the Wide Rim Glasses are no longer available in the gemstore.

If you happen to own one of this item (or any other town clothes headgear item) that was equipped on a character, you need to take that character to the Black Lion Armorer near the Black Lion Traders that can be found in each of the 5 racial cities, and convert town clothes. You will then receive a skin item that can be applied to any headgear, and unlock the skin in your wardrobe (for all armor types).

Sadly, if you did not purchase the Wide Rim Glasses from the gemstore before it got removed, or destroyed it before the April 15th update, I see no way for you to unlock this skin.

-It does the opposite of preventing scamming. Without a secure way to trade it is far far easier to scam players. All you have to do is tell them you will give them something in return once you receive what they give you. Then don’t give them anything. Individual trading interface prevents this.

That is what I meant by “gullible”. Do you ever buy anything on the internet that requires payment in advance, when the seller is anonymous and cannot be traced (reliably) to either a person or company that can be held liable in case of non-delivery?

I’m not sure what source your getting your reasons from, but I’d definitely like to see it.

At least I presented some arguments. The arguments you give amount to little:

  • “Other games have it.”
Guild Wars 2 is not “other games”. This is Guild Wars 2, and it has a policy of not blindly including elements from “other games” that are really just stale elements of the genre, and allow various kinds of abuse (both of other players and of the game economy in general).
  • “I want it.”
Guild Wars 2 offers three viable alternative to do the same thing (i.e. trading with other players).
One is the trading post, which offers reduced risk. The only costs are a 15% seller tax, and the fact that you can no longer choose who you are trading with.
The other is in-game mail, which allows you to gift and trade items with players whom you actually trust enough to use insecure means.
Yet a third is the guild bank, which allows a guild to manage permissions about who is allowed to deposit and/or withdraw which items from guild storage.
What functionality exactly would a trade window add to this? (Other than “I want it”?)

OK. I hopefully they fix it so we can have a way to trade with each other. Because the mail system isn’t setup for actual secure trading.

Nothing is broken, so there is nothing to fix. This is a game design decision, not an oversight or mistake. (For the same reason, it is not possible to drop items on the ground either.)

Indeed, the mailing system is not a secure way for trading. It is meant for players to give gifts to their friends.

Only the trading post is a safe (though anonymous) way to trade with strangers. It is effortless, as you don’t need to wait or even stay online to sell an item. Additionally, the trading post is a single system across all servers, so it is not limited (as you are) to the instance you happen to be in.

Most of the advantages of not having a personal player-to-player trading option have been listed above already, but bear repeating:
- No WTS spam in mapchat. Also, no WTB spam in mapchat either.
- No scamming between players (unless you are gullible enough to trade through in-game mail).
- No hacking/duping attempts by players trying to deliberately abuse their game client with a trade window open.
- Tradepost fees (15% of all sales) keep the in-game economy healthy, by preventing exponential inflation of in-game currency over time.

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

I haven’t visited Auda for a long time, but what it sounds like is that she is stuck in combat mode. When vendor and event NPCs enter combat mode, they stop giving access to their regular dialogue.

The person who said they killed a nearby wolf and then could interact with Auda suggests that the wolf engaged in combat with her, and after that combat finished, Auda reverted back to non-combat mode.

Additionally, some vendor NPCs (including heart NPCs) can be disabled during certain events that take place around their spawn position. If there is such an event for Lionguard Auda (Corrupted Kodan?), it will have to be completed for her to be willing to trade with players again.

You can freely switch between traits when out of combat, so you can experiment with all of them.
However, you can only actually select up to 14 traits to be active at the same time (of which only up to 7 can be major traits).

If indeed you actually meant skills, you can gain skill points indefinitely (1 skill point for each level past 5, and at regular XP interval after you reach level 80), as well as find many skill challenges on the explorable maps. With enough time, you can unlock all healing, utility and elite skills (although you can only equip 1 healing skill, 3 utility skills and 1 elite skill on your skill bar at any one time.)

Feedback/Questions: MegaServer

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

The issue I have with Megaservers is that they do not respect the server language division enough. Although ArenaNet claims that home server languages are taken into account when merging people into the same Megaserver map, it frequently happens that people from different language groups end up in the same instance.

The downside of this is that you have a bunch of French-language, German-language and English-language players put together in one map, and each of those groups believes their own language is the official language of the entire mapchat (because of the home server they each picked out). The result is either large groups of players ignoring each other, or one group of players trying to impose their language (usually English) on other players.

This causes conflicts, especially on European Megaserver districts. And especially during World Boss events (where coordination and communication are often required), the current Megaserver system can contribute to these events failing.

My suggestion is to create a “hard division” between servers of different language groups (rather than the “soft division” that is currently in place), so that players from French-language servers will no longer encounter players from non-French servers, and players from English-language servers will no longer encounter players from non-English servers, etc.

They are not soulbound, and they are tradable on the tradepost.

Those that are on offer throughout most of the game’s existence so far probably fall into one of two categories:

1. People who accidentally bought a training manual that they were not going to use, and try to sell it a tad cheaper, in order to recoup some of their losses. (Better to pay tradepost tax and listing fee than losing the full cost of the item.)

2. People who try to profit from naïve players who don’t know where to get manuals. These try to offer training manuals at prices higher than the trainer sells them for.

I wonder what will happen to the item after the patch. Will all buy orders be cancelled and the funds returned? Will all sell orders be cancelled and the manuals returned?

My personal hope is that the code for all existing manuals will be rewritten so that they may be consumed in order to recoup their original cost.

However, I also pointed out that you could have saved yourself the trouble of typing out a new thread, as the question was already asked and answered elsewhere on the forum. In future cases like this, I’ll provide a link to such a thread.

No snark intended.

Town Clothes questions :)

I can answer 1. as well, to some extent.

1. “Mixing and matching” of town clothes will no longer be possible, as they will be collapsed into either a single “outfit” item for the “outfit” slot, or a tonic that changes your appearance.
It is not clear what will happen to the different headgear; they could be made into tonics that only alter the character’s head, or they could be made in to “regular” headgear skins to be transmuted onto armor.
One thing to bear in mind is that you cannot have two tonic effects active at once, nor two outfits, but it will be possible to have one tonic and one outfit active at the same time. It remains to be seen how these would interact.

It doesn’t cost you gold to make a new build. Go to a trainer and spend a couple of silver, I think it’s 3.5 silver to change your build.

Sure it’s worth it. You can make it back easily.

I just want to point out that this is not good advice. The 3.5 silver fee for retraiting will be removed in a few hours.

It’s actually a “feature pack”, not a “future pack”. And it won’t be in the future for much longer. It’s coming today.

Typo. Please don’t comment about my grammar if you’re not willing to help me >:o

Actually, I was helping out. The poster above me already said that the game update will make trait refunds free, and I seconded their suggestion to wait until later today, when the patch goes live.

I just tied it in with a reference to the way you spelled the name of the update, emphasizing that it will be soon, very soon.

I did not intend to insult, degrade or ridicule anyone.

There have been several threads about this already.

Game updates usually go live during the first few hours of the US West Coast working day. Which would be anywhere from 2.5 hours to 7 hours from now.

I don’t mind them being able to move INTO combat. It’s being able to get AWAY from combat so easily that’s the problem.

This aspect of Rush could be fixed in the same way that ArenaNet tried to fix Ride the Lightning for the elementalist. By doubling the recharge time if the skill fails to hit a target.

Additionally, the evade could be removed from Whirlwind Attack.

Additionally, if Hundred Blades deals out too much damage, perhaps the recharge time could be upped to 15-20 seconds (rather than.
Or Hundred Blades’ damage could be toned down, while Arcing Slash could receive a significant damage increase in return.

If you keep items in a guild bank, you should retrieve them, however, because guild storage is not bound to any individual character or account.

Also note that waypoints cost coins to use, as well as repairing damaged armor.

(Although today’s patch will make repairs free.)

Defend Applenook from Pirate attack bugged

My guess is one of the pirates spawns inside a hill or in one of the (inaccessible) houses and cannot be targeted or attacked, thus stalling the event.

Human Ranger lvl 4 - leveling up

Dungeons:
Your first story dungeon becomes available at level 31. (If you do the personal story, you will start receiving in-game mails from iconic NPCs inviting you to the dungeons that show you where to find the entrances.) Every 10 levels or so, another dungeon becomes available. There are 8 in total, and most are available in the level 70-80 range.
After you completed a story version of the dungeons. the exploration mode of the dungeon becomes available. Exploration mode is harder and has a higher level requirement. What level is needed is mentioned when you approach the dungeon entrance. Generally, exploration mode is mostly done by level 80 groups only, though.

There is also a dungeon-like thing called “Fractals of the Mists”, which can be a lot of fun. The lower difficulty levels are doable at lower levels, but again, usually only level 80 players are looking for groups.

World versus World:
You can start playing World versus World from level 2 onwards, if you want to. Just press B in-game to choose a map to enter.
You will be “uplevelled” to 80 for as long as you remain in the WvW-zones. This means your basic stats are raised to those of level 80, and your gear is temporarily enhanced too. You will be far inferior to a “real” level 80 in WvW, though, because you don’t have exotic gear and no traits at lower levels. Still, it is possible to participate by joining large groups, or by defending towers and keeps with siege equipment.

Crafting:
The moment to start crafting is up to you. It depends on whether you want to spend any gold on it, or just want to craft with what you gather. Bear in mind, though, that the items you craft at a low crafting level are suitable for low-level characters (starting at level 5 equipment). If you want to be able to craft items for your character level, you should progress your crafting.
The guideline is that for every 25 crafting levels, you will gain the ability to craft items for a character of 5 levels higher. So at crafting 0 craft, you can craft level 5 equipment, at 25 craft, you can craft level 10 equipment, etc.
Starting developing crafting early allows you to use it to craft suitable equipment for yourself as you level. Starting it later means you will have more materials to work with. The choice is up to you.
