Yeah it id really weird how Rangers got nerfed down in beta when the builds that were coming up aren’t really anything special compared to what is currently in the game.

Edit: If you’re playing Ranger because they use bows; Thieves shortbow is better and Warriors longbow is better than Rangers.

Uh, wrong. The Warrior longbow sucks except for the AoE fire field combo. It only has 900 range. Not better than the Ranger longbow AT ALL.

Actually there is an adept warrior trait that makes Longbow range 1200. What now?

Great. Now you have a trait that’s basically worthless, a range that’s the same as everybody else, and you still only have one combo attack that’s worth anything.

Anything else?

Worthless? Like 85% of the Ranger traits? Doesn’t change the fact that warrior longbow does more dps and is more useful than Ranger longbow.

Anything else?

Be as smarmy as you like, but you’re still wrong. Warrior longbow doesn’t compare to Ranger longbow for DPS.

I’m pretty sure it does. If you enjoy attacking once every 3 seconds then be my guest. Warrior longbow surpasses ranger longbow in every aspect.

Being “pretty sure” doesn’t make you right. Sorry. Just because you keep saying it over and over doesn’t make it true either.

Warrior longbow has it’s advantages over the Ranger longbow, but it’s not better by any stretch of the imagination (except yours, apparently).

No he is right, Warrior Longbow is amazing and is much better then Ranger Longbow.

I will never forgive the Charr. Althea? All those Ascalonians you saved from the cages that had been imprisoned for years? Throwing a little kid into an arena for fun and sports?

Disgusting, cruel creatures.

To be fair (and I’m not much of a Charr fan myself, to be honest with you,) none of the Charr currently alive in the GW2 era had even been born yet when all that was happening.

Yes. That’s one very important thing to remember. The Charr of 250 years ago were vicious, savage creatures who showed no mercy to their enemies and glorified violence and bloodsport. But the Charr of today? While they’re undeniably still very militaristic and exult in war and fighting, they’re also a lot more civilised and open to peaceful relations with other races. Again, using us humans as examples, 250 years ago slavery was still an accepted institution in many countries. Cultures and societies can change a lot in a short period of time, and it’s not always fair to judge the people of today by the actions of their ancestors.

Mind you, that doesn’t mean I’ll be attending any negotiations with a Charr without a weapon at my side.

And in real life people tend to be apologetic for stuff their ancestors did like slavery and genocide, they don’t glorify it and get hailed as heroes.

I agree the cast times of the Melandru elite make it worthless to use even as a bit of fun. Not sure if other classes racial transformations are like that or not haven’t tried them out yet but it needs to change.

In terms of actual gameplay and not lore, Prayer to Kormir is much better then prayer to Dwayna, that mostly might be because its my Rangers best/only reliable condition remover. Whereas Dwayna is just a basic heal with no flavour (like they said was the point of racial skills) and all classes have a better one. That said they both lack flavour and are pretty tame and underpowered compared to the racials of other races.

As for Kormir being more favoured then Melandru? No. Kormir is one of the most hated characters in the franchise. While people who joined with GW2 probably won’t care or know enough about the Gods to hate her, Nightfall players remember her as the annoying whiny one who started Nightfall, planned a failed invasion that got everybody killed then proceeded to do nothing but mope around until the player defeated Abbadon where she immediately claimed all the rewards and recognition that you deserved.

Also Quaggens worship Melandru so quite clearly she is the best God.

Could we maybe....

Why Do People Dislike Their Rangers?

Levetty.1279

Yet another thread full of people saying Rangers are fine when the devs have already come out and said no they are not.

There are two problems with Rangers,

First they were the first class to have good PvP builds emerge in the betas and for some reason Anets response to that was to overnerf every one. The main ones being GS actually being able to do damage and spirits. Then when the game came out people started finding the best builds of the other classes and they are better then what the Ranger ever had.

Second for some reason Anet thought it was a good idea to shift over all the Rangers damage to a AI sidekick in a game that is meant to eventually become an esport. The pet can’t hit moving targets, making it usless in PvP and WvWvW and can’t evade/dodge/kite so can easily be killed by AoE making it useless in Dungeons and WvWvW. Thus we can’t really use any of our damage. This even becomes a problem in open world PvE because Risen won’t attack your pet but instead come for you and unless you are the absolutely tankiest you can get your Ranger you are going to have to kite them and thus the pet can’t hit them.

I’d rather have that than Mesmer being the only class able to ignore the basic game mechanic that is los.
Cause this affects much more than attacking keeps in WvW…

Read the thread, any ground targeted AoE can be used to ignore LoS. Mesmer does it slightly easier but in return that AoE can be killed.

I don’t know how people can compare the thieves running up to you invisible throwing out enough damage in seconds to kill most non bunker builds and then running off invisible (with the added possibility of the rendering issue keeping him invisible all the time) to a Mesmer who has to cast all of his clones and then send them running towards you to shatter in one of the most telegraphed attacks in the game all the while hoping that you don’t kill them with a single aoe or cleave.

Removing aoe from berserker is the worst idea I have ever heard.

About the LoS issue they can ‘fix’ that when they stop ground targeted AoEs from being able to hit the top of walls and AoEs in general being able to pass through the keep doors, or they change GS’s ground targeted attack into a good ground targeted attack.

No. They need to give all phantasms the ability to ignore LOS or remove it from the GS phantasm.

It boggles my mind this has not been addressed or explained. Why is the coding for the GS Phantasm SO different than the others. Was it an oversight? Or intended?

Why should they remove it from Berserker just because the other Phantasms don’t have it? How does Berserker having it but the other not hurt anything?

Berserker has it because we don’t have a powerful AoE to throw up on walls like every other class. The others don’t because it would be OP if we could create a stream of illusions to run around the walls shattering and phantasming everything. Though personally I think Warden should be able to ignore LoS too.

You think it’s fine, because you probably run around full time with your Greatsword out. What about people that don’t use GS. Why should we have to also carry one with us incase we need to abuse this mechanic.

What other ability ignores LOS like that?

Yeah, if Rangers and Warriors want to attack the top of keep walls with AoE they have to use longbows, If eles and Necros do they have to use staff, Guardians have to use scepter, theifs have to use shortbow and Engineers ahve to use granade kit.

In short all classes have one long range AoE weapon that they have to use if they want to attack the top of walls.

My problem with the Charr is thus: they are fake.

They are at best the forced construct of an unfolding lore that deparately needed to have them be the good guys now. The whole spirit of GW2 is this not-so-subtle moral tale on how we all need to get along and forget our past grudges. Why? Because the dragons are the bad guys now. The Charr used to be be the quintessential bad guys: brutish, ugly, feral…basically beasts who knew how to fight in formation. They were the primary enemy in GW1 Prophesies before the expansions came out.

Comparing the Foefire to the Searing is like comparing a housefire to an earthqauke. The Foefire, while tragic, only affected one city. Given the extreme hatred between these two races it doesn’t seem so surprising really. The Searing on the other hand, affected every single culture in Tyria. And in a very bad way. It opened the door for invasion of both Kryta and Orr by the Charr.

The Krytans had to turn to abject slavery under the White Mantle and the Mursaat to be saved annihilation by the Charr. It took years of civil war and death to oust the Mantle out, and the strife bled into Magumma and the Shiverpeaks as well. The land was in shambles after that, and they were the lucky ones.

When the Charr came marching on Orr after the Searing, the humans turned to the Vizier in desperation. Secretly he had been biding his time for such an opportunity and promptly used the Scepter of Orr in the Cataclysm to sink the entire continent to the bottom of the sea. Hey, at least he killed the Charr too. :/

And we don’t need to talk about Ascalon. So…one event made mad ghosts out of a city. The other changed the entire face of Tyria forever…in an ugly way. Two kingdoms dead and gone and one on the ropes. All because of, directly or indirectly, the Charr and the Searing.

It’s not a fair comparison.

Yet, even with all of that, my biggest gripe with the Charr is that they were conjured out of thin air. I’ll explain.

The Charr of GW1 were, as I mentioned, beastly and cruel. The only advanced social structures they could boast were a rudimentary caste system and some effective mass military tactics. Other than that they weren’t too far off the DNA path from the grawl.

The Charr of GW2 are rediculously different. They have these modern, steel-girded cities, advanced weapons of war, a finely-tuned army and social structure. They are marvels of modern engineering for goodness sake; 4-story tall motorcycles? What the heck is that? They went from communicating with grunts and rudimentary speech wearing loincloths in GW1 to being the champions of technology in GW2.

All in the span of 250 years…

That is some crazy-fast evolution. Meanwhile the Asura (the obvious engineer choice) are over there twiddling their thumbs making yet another Golem based on the original model. And now everyone is supposed to be all friendly and nice because the dragons are around. /facepalm

So, to me anyway, the Charr are the superficial construct of a storyline that desperately needed to make them be the good guys now. Hate to say it, because I really like a lot of the writing that went into both games, but it’s bad writing.

You might as well line up every human in Kryta and have Rytlock walk along them, slapping each one in the face and laughing gleefully as he carries Rurik’s stolen sword with him.

Oh…I didn’t make a Charr character if anyone was wondering.

Very good post that covers most of why I dislike the Charr and will never make a Charr character.

Hopefully Anet reads this thread and takes in the feedback and maybe try to fix the whole Charr mess as they add new story content.

What is gained by using axe/warhorn offset sword/torch that going axe/torch and sword/horn doesn’t do better? I’m not seeing it, can someone fill me in?

I’d think axe/torch is preferable for easier projectile-fire combos, and sword/horn for mobility. It isn’t a huge difference, I’m just curious why you want to use them in the order some have listed.

I would imagine throwing the bonfire at their feet and then fighting them in it would do more damage then the procs you would get from throwing an axe through it.

That would be logical, but burning doesn’t work that way in this game. Burning is burning, and additional stacks only increase duration, not damage, so Axe/Torch is a better combo than Sword/Torch by far. Sword pairs best with Warhorn and Dagger in my experience, and particularly with Warhorn.

I’m not sure what your reasoning is there, the combo from throwing an axe procs the burning effect too, so that provides no benefits over them standing in it. Also bonfire has a direct damage to it as well.

Mass Invisibility or Balthazars Hounds?

in Mesmer

Levetty.1279

Well depends what you want to do.

For general PvE Hounds is better, they do fairly powerful aoe and can really help you clear through crowds, also provides some extra bodies to go along with your illusions for absorbing hits for you.

Mass Invisibility is more for group support in a organised group in PvP and WvWvW. Decoy would probably be enough stealth for PvE unless you want to chain stealths together for whatever reason.

Obviously you will eventually have enough points for both though.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgEQNAR8dlwzKoHTzoGg9ICqHYX29dkU0apWJF42FC

Getting the Dueling stuff first, then Illusions, then finally Domination.

If you want to stick with Staff for leveling then I would say illuisonary elasticity is a must, doubles your auto attack damage in 1vs1s, and makes it semi decent for when you are attacked by more then one mob.

Engineers are pretty OP at the moment in PvE and WvWvW with all their AoEs, can easily produce more damage in an area then Ranger can single target.

At the moment GS and Longbow are probably the Rangers weakest weapons, which is a shame because they are fun to use but at the same time not because they are so weak (which kind of describes the Ranger all over really). Some buffs are supposed to be coming next patch but from the sounds of it it will mostly be to our utilities at first.
