There is little need to actually have a camera on the devs when streaming. They can use game footage in place of being on camera if its an issue of embarrassment or not being comfortable on screen. Or failing that have a dedicated PR person to is willing to go on camera to answer questions people may have. The questions can easily be had from the multiple topics posted in the forums.

There is no real need to read and answer comments live on screen, which btw is something that even seasoned broadcasting staff are hesitant to do at times. Just because you can does not mean you should, as they say. From the two I’ve seen a few minutes of, the devs are not suited to giving clear and understandable information on what it is they are doing. They are stilted, clipped statements without any real though put in to it as if they are always caught on the hop by questions they don’t expect or cant answer.

In short; Imo a crappy setup, that doesn’t do much to improve Anet’s professional image as a company, nor give the customers the info they are imparting in a clear manner.

Didn’t say there was. My point still stands though, they did get a bad rep but where still required at times. Rangers now have a (justified) bad rep and are never required for any part of the content. They are shunned, and with no role and no requirement I would say its actually worse for Rangers than it was Wa/Mo’s.

I honestly never thought I would feel this way, because it is after all only a game. And its no fee system has always been a big attraction for me. But enough is enough. When a class is shunned by the playerbase you know there is a problem that needs rectified ASAP.

It happened with GW1 Wa/Mo classes, those got a “bad rep” for years in the game but where still kinda required as they fulfilled a role. Rangers in GW2 have no role, they don’t have enough utility, party support, DPS, or condition clearing. Worst class in the game atm, and Anet solution is to make matter worse for them.

I’ve played Ranger for nearly a year, and recently invested heavily in ascended zerker gear.

Anet you just ruined my character and ripped me off for my gold and laurels. The whole point of me going zerkers was to bring my DPS up to a level where it wasnt horribad compared to other classes. Now that’s completely wasted. Im done, no more GW2 until such time as the balance team actually get its head out of its anus and start balancing Rangers properly instead of hitting them with the nerf bat over and over again.

This is a prime example of what’s wrong with Anet; Nerf an entire stat set that is most prevalent rather than buff the other sets and correct design mistakes in encounter and monster design which caused the perceived imbalance in the first place.

So the sum total of ranger atm is; Broken pets that wont be fixed because Anet is to bloody lazy, bad weapon skills, idiotic traits, useless signets, crappy utility skills, atrocious DPS with anything other than sword and “meta” builds, and last but not least the entire class is shunned by the playerbase.

GG Anet, really GG.

The last two main options for graphics controls how many other players are in view and how detailed they are. They have a huge impact on game performance, and its best to lower them to a comfortable level.

I would advise lowering both to “medium” or lower. Also put reflections on “sky” and those combined should improve performance a fair bit. Also up top put the frame limiter on 60 and try disabling v-sync.

No way to resolve it as far as I know, it also happens with the ele lightning hammer since its the same model and effect. But as for people complaining, ignore them and use whatever you want. It doesnt matter if it does have a box or not once all the spell effects take over. They wont see it in the mass of particle effects.

Gold sellers whispering - Suggestion

This is a massive deterrent for new players, who need to ask for help to get around the game when they first start.

How would it be? You don’t need to whisper to get information or advice anywhere in the game. In fact a new player is much less likely to use a whisper function, since they generally don’t know anyone. New players are already restricted from gold>gems conversion with a time limit. It still leaves them all the other chat channels to ask advice on. Hell implement a City of Heroes system where a new player cant whisper out but they can reply to one sent to them.

I would support a whisper restriction on new players based on either AP or Account Age.

A human’s Eyes cannot detect Frame Rate above 32FPS. (Science Research says 24, But my own research…I Say 32FPS).

If your eyes bother you below 60FPS, you need to investigate your Monitor. There is probably a refresh rate issue going on that causes the Light to Flicker to your eyes, causing Headaches and eye pain/Discomfort.

This is entirely incorrect, and is the same wrong information that is peddled across the web in countless forums.

The human eye does not “see” in frame rates, it views light particles (photons) striking the back of the eye. 24 fps+ creates a seemingly fluid motion of static images. The eye and brain itself can easily tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps, because our brains can process the light photons striking the eye faster than 60 times per second. In fact the eye can detect frame rates in excess of 120 per second with high accuracy.

The issue the person you quoted has is a well know issue with non static frame rates without motion blurring when gaming, where the brain is expecting data at a faster rate (ie 60fps) but when it dips lower (to 30fps) it is forced to “wait” on the expected data. The difference is an extremely small fraction of a second, but that occurring several times over the course of a few minutes can cause nausea and headaches.

Its similar to why people get seasickness. The eye sees one thing, the body feels another (via the inner ear), and neither can be computed by the brain as valid information because they conflict. Hence nausea.

If we could not detect frame rates above 30 fps care to explain why “The Hobbit” movie is in 48p?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

Also to note is this;

The USAF, in testing their pilots for visual response time, used a simple test to see if the pilots could distinguish small changes in light. In their experiment a picture of an aircraft was flashed on a screen in a dark room at 1/220th of a second. Pilots were consistently able to “see” the afterimage as well as identify the aircraft. This simple and specific situation not only proves the ability to percieve 1 image within 1/220 of a second, but the ability to interpret higher FPS.

We need a title like “Not a bearbow” so people wont automatically judge us all as crap.

No but seriously, I know the sword/spotter/spirit combo does the most dps. Thing is I cant play sword on ranger. I freely admit it, that with a sword my ranger stinks. Though I am not limited in other weapon choices. I have axe/horn/GS/LB/SB in my backpack all the time. I also have all the pets I can get, so if you don’t like whatever it is I’m using just say so and ask me to change. I do prefer my longbow, because I want at least one character who does “pew pew stuffs”.

If the DPS of everthing else apart from the spirit/spotter/sword combo was raised a bit it would help overall.

The main issue will always be the pet though. Unless pets are massively overhauled, and the traiting is improved, and rangers start synergising with the party and not just pets they will always be stigmatised.

Its my considered opinion that its not the gear at fault, nor even the gameplay mechanics. To me its a failure of content design, specifically in regards to encounters themselves. I should probably elaborate a bit with an example. Ok then.

For example; A Dungeon boss is no longer a single entity, it is instead three units.
Boss A; High HP pool, High Passive Defence
Boss B; Medium HP pool, Uses Environmental elements for defence
Boss C; Low HP pool, High Active defence

The basic premise is that it requires all three styles of combat to defeat them. One boss requires DPS, one control, the other conditions all in the same encounter. The most effective being a team that balances all 3 styles through whatever means and compositions they chose.

Single target, large hp pool encounters will only ever lead to DPS centric gameplay. Hence the DPS meta.

Well that’s my thoughts anyway.

You know people are leaving the game when servers are emptying.
With each new broken promise and now their false patch notes, this game’s player base IS diminishing.

Eh no.

Our guild regularly invites new players to join and there is no shortage of new players on our server. What’s much more likely is that your on a low population server that has had people leave to go to other servers. And/or you have culling settings extremely low.

LA is always crowded prime time and people are shunted to multiple overflows, which right away disproves the player base is leaving in droves.

Just because you don’t see many people does not mean they are not still playing. You are just not seeing them, that is all.

Post your system specs including the power supply brand and watt rating. This problem is usually connected to under rated or bad PSU.

Ive already come to the conclusion that it is absolutely 100% sure that its not my PSU.

Oh how so? Did you run a volt meter over it and check the readings? On all the rails? And were they as they are supposed to be? Even under full load? And did you check PSU internal temps to ensure it wasn’t an overheat shutdown?

Or did you just play some other games and decide it wasn’t the PC?

In any case, when a system powers down without you specifically telling it to then there is a fault in the system. You are either having a BSOD event and not noticing it (unlikely), or you are having a power failure to the system either from overheating or from faulty and/or inadequate hardware.

Sorry but that’s the gist of it.

My advice is to test another PSU of a higher wattage in the system if possible.

No the game have not been optimized….my i7-4770k@4.4ghz/r9 290(BIOS mod/OC) gets on knees and can barely maintain around 15fps in wvw..

You should take another look at your system then because I have an i7 4770k @4.3 and a R9 270x and I get over 30fps in a full on 3 way zerg in WvW with everything maxed except for the culling options set to medium.

@OP – The game us CPU bound so if you don’t have a high speed chip the game just chugs along with crappy frame rates. However try lowering the culling options, and reducing some other visual effects to see if there is an improvement for your system.

The State of Balance discussion

in Ranger

Posted by: Lexandro.1456

Lexandro.1456

I still think a number of ranger players are in denial about the state of ranger balance wise. Sure the sword is the best personal DPS but its hard to use and takes a lot of practice to get good at so you get that DPS. And sure the spirit build is a decent build to use pvp.

But as soon as you use another class it becomes apparent that the ranger just doesn’t cut the mustard. Utility skills that have less buffs, take longer to cooldown and that only synergies with the pet rather than other players are a major detriment to the class. As is its horrible traits that are badly placed and in serious need of a rework and merging.

Dont get me wrong here I main a ranger and its my fav and most used character. Compared to all my other characters though, it feels like I have to work three times harder to try and be on par with any other class.

The pet mechanics stink, the system is easily the worst class mechanic in the game and one that simply does not work properly.

Imo the class doesn’t need a balance pass, it needs a near total reworking from the ground up to bring it in line with other classes.

Lexandro.1456

I feel for you OP I really do because you got in a team with morons. Ac is easily doable with low level characters. All it requires is some team work. On the mounds phase an ele with conjured weapons is your best bet to whack-a-burrow fast. The team telling you personally you dont have the DPS to burst down burrows says to me they didnt know wtf they were doing in AC and/or seemed to be expecting you to take out burrows solo. Either way thats a bad team fullstop.

Ive done AC many, MANY times with low level chars. Ive done it clean through with a lvl 32 ele, and a 34 ranger with zero issues. Both times I was in low level teams, and both times we didnt have any problems because everyone was on the same page and knew what to do. And subsequent runs sub 80 have all gone the same way. I find its more likely that level 80s demanding other 80s are infact horrendously bad players who use level 80 characters as a crutch to get through the content.

Its a real shame that these kinds of people ruin the dungeon running experience. But dont let it get to you. Just find other players who are not thick as two short planks.

But its not as cheap a boost though, because you need a PSU to handle two cards and those don’t come that cheap for a quality one. So you can easily end up spending the price of a newer more powerful card just on the second older model card and a psu to handle them both.

Its smarter to just get a newer card, and sell on the old one if possible.

GW2 & its language discrimination

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lexandro.1456

Lexandro.1456

Probably mostly because it costs money to hire people to regulate and maintain several languages.

what is there to maintain ? all they have to do is put the numerics in so that the game accepts them(doesn’t show up blank in-game), they’re basically blocking the alphabets because they can’t handle people saying things that they can’t understand

Data base entries for new languages on gear, database entires for new languages on skills, database entires for new languages on the UI, database entries for the entire quest system and personal story. And thats just for the old stuff in the game.

Every patch would require additional resources on translation, entry and verification of new languages. It would require translators for every living story update, patch notes etc etc. Then there are the voice actors for all the NPC conversations, player interactions etc.

That’s some of the requirements for adding a new language to a game. Its not as simple as just adding in characters to the chat system. Its not as easy as you make out, nor is it cheap.

I had an SLi system and it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. SLi and Crossfire, while touted as “ultra gaming” hardware isn’t all that great tbh. Many games refuse to run correctly in SLi / CF modes, additional profile data is often required, the actual performance gains are lower than you would expect and its bloody expensive. I cant remember off the top of my head but iirc its something like per card extra its is only a 1.5x increase in performance (rather than the 2x you would expect from 2 cards).

The smart money is on one high-end card.

Disk Installation Problem

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Lexandro.1456

Lexandro.1456

Its likely due to the type of disc drive you have. Discs can have different formats the information is stored in, and many discs these days are dual layer discs meaning they hold more data than a standard DVD.

Older DVD drives can have trouble reading newer formats and dual layer discs. There a couple of options;

First is to check for a firmware update for the disc drive from he manufacturer. Firmware is the basic software inside the drive that tells it how to work. Some companies release updates to firmware to incorporate new disc format info so the drive can read them. Please note however, that updating the firmware incorrectly can make the drive inoperable. So caution is advised, and fully ensure you are checking for the exact model of drive you have.

Alternatively you could try replacing the drive itself with a newer model. Drives these days are extremely cheap, and can be had for £20.

And as you said you could download the game client from the web and install that way. It does take a while but it doesn’t involve any money or fiddling with the disc drive.

Final note; Even if you install off the disc you will still need to wait before playing. The disc version is not the most updated version of the game, so you would need to patch the game fully before playing. Recent additions to the game means that this could take some time as the size of the updates have been quiet large in recent times.

Best of luck.

You have to over clock but it’s possible.

The problem is it’s greatly affected by the number of players in LA. Try it in those most populated servers where a constant of roughly couple hundreds of players are present, it just can’t be done.

It can be done and I see it regularly. I’m far from being the only one too.

Then I should assume you have a godly machine build that can support your claim.

My system I posted above with max graphical settings @1680x1050 around the forge gets between 30 and 50 fps depending on the angle and number of people around at the time. If I turn off v-sync, and reduce player character model numbers a bit its 40+.

If you have long loading screens instead of deleting files take these steps;

1.) Run a repair command on the game files. Instructions in the link below
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28148006-Repairing-the-Game-Client

2.) De-fragment the hard-drive with a 3rd party program. Windows default version is not very good with large files at all so GW2 would barely be touched by it. There are a number of free programs on the web that do this.

3.) Close any programs that are not required when running the game. Long screens can simply be because your system is busy in the background.

I couldnt really be bothered to wade through 12 pages of duble/tripple/quadrupple post “statements” so if this has be said already, I agree.

Anyhoo; Skills. Give us more skills. The skill system is extremely limited currently. Yes I know you folks have added a couple of healing skills. Thats great, honestly it is. Though the ranger new healing skill is kinda rubbish for anyone not running a spirit build, but thats a seperate point.

No my point is as stated; More skillz plz! Additional utility skills & elites to chose from that are class/race/prof specific and also some universal ones.

But here is an additonal idea, again if its been said, I agree!

Make weapons skills interchangeable . That is to say, we have 5 skills per weapon. You could add more skills to each weapon and give us a choice in switching out some weapon skills. I know a few times I tried a weapon set and thought “that would be great for me is skill # was on button # instead” or “if this weapon A had a skill like weapon B on that skill I think is a bit crappy it would be great for me”

Not that the current weapon skills are that bad. To use an example of the ranger longbow changes a few patches back that put stealth on hunters shot, I know some players would like the option of the old skill version. Giving players a choice in builds and styles is a must for longevity, which you are well aware of.

Balance would be harder yes. But thats a challenge you folks have pulled off in the past with GW1 skill system. So you can do it. And it would add in whole new dimension to the game with regards to builds, and give old characters a new lease of life without the need of complete rebuilds, hell even make it required to rebuild the character.

Just more skills please!

Wow such levels of hostility on a simple matter. Really chaps you need to take a look at yourselves and ask why you are so hostile.

Yes I have been there with players who are SO bad they make you want to tear hair out, we all have. In on instance I was on my ranger with a LB & S/H combo paired with a dual bearbow in a low level fractal pug who made me look like god walking the earth he was so bad (and i even aint that great with s/h either).

But at the same time there are a plethora of players out there who know what to do, but may have a different style than you are used too, or may be an adaptation of an existing guide or even may have read an outdated guide and not be up to speed on any changes made.

You have a clear description and someone joins. Do you instantly kick them the second they say hi to you in chat? Not even giving them the chance to ask you what character you want? When it could well be you have listed two class types? Or have said in LFG “EXP only” and they are experienced and just happen to be on an alt? I mean as I said ive done plenty of content in the game and have 5 filled slots. My alts have ascended stuffs, are tooled up with a gear/build that are expected. I just dont run around in “meta mode” 24/7.

No there is not an overwhelming number of bad players. There are bad players, there are also players who may not know all the nuances of a class or skill. Those second kind of players outnumber the bads easily.

Cranked my point about the language was simply that people may join that dont speak english to great, or read it to well or at all but could speak it enough on TS to pass muster. You cant guarantee just because you write it its understood, so take a second to talk to them pre-whatever.

PS; And no I never use a bear, under any circumstances whatsoever.

Incentivize, thats how you increase team-work. There is to much “stick” in the game, it needs more “carrot” to make people take note.

The most OBVIOUS way to do so is increase drop-rates while in a party. Say 1% per member, though that’s just a suggested starting number.

Second most obvious way is to award more XP and/or Karma to players in a party. Again numbers can be suggested, say 5% e/a, but its a start.

Third option is to add content that has additonal content for parties. No not instances like we have had, but proper additonal party content. By that I mean something like an instance that has a path for a single player, and a second longer path for a few players in a group, and a third more rewarding path for full parties.

AND as an extra thought; Have parts that are only do-able with certain classes or races; Like a target on a wall that opens a gate that only 1500 distance long range attacks can hit (ie ranger LB), or a gap under a wall that an asura is required to enter to activate a switch, or a corpse that needs a necro to revive it to give the team crucial info to clear the event. And or time/kill completion scores that reward better teams of players.

That kinda thing would open up a helluva lot more people in parties and playing as a team.

1-4 isnt a lot of information to someone who may have run the path a few times but not be 100% clued up on what the mechanics are. It also relies on you knowing they know what 1-4 means. Simply ask them if they know what to do, then state a plan of attack. Makes things a whole lot easier and smoother when everyone is on the same page.

Also non-english speakers populate the servers, so your LFG notation is not guaranteed to be understood no matter what you write.

But here is the thing, how is a new player supposed to GET experienced at the content if a guiding hand is not there to show them the ropes? I mean I took a look at LFG earlier and the listings for CoE & fractals 0-10. All of the listings stated “experienced only”, “speed-run” or “Wars only” with 10+ listings for each.

I have absolutely no problem taking new players through any piece of content ive done, or even not so new players who haven’t done specific content yet. All I ask is that they tell me it’s new to them so I can explain to them and get everything going properly.

And one last point; Stop kicking players as soon as they join without a word. I main a ranger but I have 4 other characters I can pick from to do content. When I join a team, and Im with a class you dont need, or want just say so and Ill change over to an alt. To many times now Ive joined a party and been kicked without a word, just because I have a ranger. NEWS FLASH PEOPLE; Not everyone is a bearbow, and wet behind the ears.

Exotics still work just fine… >.>

Irrelevant. The last major additions to the game were ascended weapons and armour, doesn’t matter if you ‘need’ it or not, naturally most players will want to get a set or two.

The cost and effort required are really a bit much, imho.

It is relevant. Ascended gear are like legendary – they’re supposed to take a long time to work toward. They’re for the elites who want the best of the best.

Ascended isn’t required for any aspect of this game, nor does it give an insane advantage over exotics. It doesn’t set a border to exclude non-ascended players. It’s balanced. It’s a bragging right that is rightly deserved.

Lol no its not for “elites”. The tier was added simply because getting an exotic set was deemed “too easy”, not that it was only for “elite players”. Its got nothing to do with “bragging rights” and is not a prestige item. Far from it.

And if they are supposed to take a long time to work toward, then explain why the mats are purchasable off the TP hmm? I had an ascended weapon day 2 of the release because I stockpiled mats to get up to 500 crafting, and I had spare gold to buy in the T7 mats required. Nothing “elite” about buying your way to an item.

Its the BiS gear, its for everyone to own and use. You are in the wrong game my friend if you think wearing some pink bits makes you somehow “leet” and gives prestige. Particularly as Ive seen a crapload of people already running around with the armor on.

The issue as described is not that people cannot get it, its that the method of obtaining it is mind numbingly boring. And people would like a method to attain them that doesn’t involve standing in LA doing nothing at all in the way of content.

“leet” gear and “prestige items”, boy you are funny dude.

"Awesomium" Crashes Whole Computer

Im afraid that, yes it is an issue with your computer. You have data corruption, which what the check disc program is designed to find. Anet cant bug fix a system error on your end.

Look Im not being nasty or trite, but it is a problem with your computer.

Run a repair command on the game files. This will error check all the data and any erroneous files will be replaced with freshly downloaded ones. Instructions on how to do so in the link below;

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28148006-Repairing-the-Game-Client

If that fails to stop the crashing please post in the technical help section with your pc system specs and any related crash dumps from the game.

Elementalist traits keep resetting

This happened to me also but its not a bug as far as I am aware. Your PvP trait setup is only for pvp, once you leave the mists it reverts to what you had before you entered.

Ranged weapons seem to suck in this game

Apologies for confusing the responses. I am not telling people l2p, I am stating that the “risk” factor is near non existent once a person l2p with a melee class.

Block/Evading the arrow is a bad idea, reflect it back at him and its bursts on him instead. Thus the boss helps kill himself, making it that much easier and faster to take him down. The agony on the arrow is trivial once you have AR, the burning and AoE flameblast are not trivial particularly to other members of the team in close proximity.

I don’t consider pre-patch fractal 30+ trivial because its was not trivial and to suggest otherwise is dishonest. Uncategorised, dredge, and shaman fractals above level 30 pre-patch required proper team work and weak links in the team will be exposed. Post patch its a wee bit easier but its by no means trivial. No its not l2p issue, its an honest assessment of the challenge without bluster or hyperbole over the difficulty (or any perceived lack thereof).

I saw way more of a gain that. I went from an AMD x2 @ 3gz and playing at all low @24fps to an i7 4770k and all high settings @60fps. Game is considerably better in performance and looks great too .

But @ op; Going from an already fairly good i5, to another faster i5 wont gain you that much imo (unless you OC the nuts off it). If you are going to upgrade go for a high spec i7.

No I didnt mention his melee only attacks because those can be evaded, blocked with aegis, reduced with prot, ignored with block skills etc etc. When melee stacking him, those are all a given. The arrow was mentioned because in comparison from melee to ranged attacking him, the arrow is the prime concern as it contains agony, burning and AoE flame blasts (since your not melee him ’natch). WoR makes it hit him instead, or didnt you know that? And since you want to be precise it seems, dont forget his AoE attacks too that you run/evade out of.

You said “go do it”. I’ve stated “I’ve already done it both ways”. Results were Melee was easier and faster. Then you pull the “oh thats trivial” line, to try and invalidate the response. That’s pretty much an informal fallacy.

Your contending that melee is riskier. Im saying its only risky if you have not L2p.

I dont think that’s a bug, I think thats intended behaviour to force teams to do both at the same point.

Sorry but no from me. Would lead to exploitation. A player would log in bring boss down to 1% HP, relog on another char at a lower level, WP in and kill for rewards. Its already happening in dungeons, to let it happen in the open world would be a bad idea.

Should the Bloodlust buffs affect our pets?

^Yep, and its bloody stupid and a lazy attutide Anet have.

It should be a separate AI for player pets, Anet knows this and are simply too lazy and cheap to add an extra AI set only attached to player pets. I mean they could add an extra catagory to AI sets marked “player_pets” and copy/paste over all the NPC animal AI code then tweak away.

But that is “to much work” apparently.

“Ascended gear drops” , the chances are even lower than a pre. I think crafting a superior tier of gear shouldn’t be forced. It’s not like it was a legendary. I’d rather buy from TP directly 200g\piece, wouldn’t be too bad.

If you do Fractals, the chance s rather equal to a precursor. Just yesterday I got a Wup Wup chest from a level 10 daily run. It’s not impossible, just play the game and you can get it. Through crafting or drops.

Lucky you. I’ve done fractals for months pre fractured patch, and a a fair number post patch. Ive played for nearly a year and not seen one of these “mythical” precursor drops. And I have only ever seen one ascended crate drop in fractals, and it was a weapon crate for rabid stats a team mate got on 26 just after weapons were added.

So that’s a grand total of 1 drop a year, and not even for me.

Stellar drop rate there.
