List of Mesmer Bugs (Older Thread)

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

I’m concerned the devs won’t even bother looking at this thread and use this as an excuse:

3. Do not post more than one bug per thread: lists of bugs are not very helpful to us because we’re frequently sending thread links to specific people who may not be able to address the other bugs you’re reporting. Please make a separate thread for each bug you’re seeing. [edit] This is with the exception of a staff request for bugs to be consolidated.

This is under the sticky on how to report bugs. If I’m mistaken let me know and I’ll delete this reply. But at the moment there is so much other stuff in here besides just a plan bug report.

You may be right, perhaps this is why the devs ignore us. What shall we do now? Make 40+ new threads here?

The devs stopped noticing the thread for two reasons:

  • It has too much offtopic grumpiness. Yes, there’s a reason for it, which is: no appropriate dev attention to these problems. That’s a vicious circle. When we got that attention, we appreciated it, remained pretty constructive and waited patiently for our fixes; when the one person who seemed to care left, we were left with even more miscommunication, unfixed bugs, new bugs and ninja-nerfs – so no wonder we’re a bit upset here, right?
  • They have their own view on our class and on our bugs, while they also have a large queue of bugs, little time dedicated to actually fixing things, and a skewed priority system (iLeap “fix” vs unbugged iWarden). This is made worse by the fact that they can’t (or are strongly not willing to as it is not cost-efficient in their view) fix the underlying mechanics of the engine which cause bugs like pathing issues, broken blinks and getting permanently stuck in place.

Having an extensive properly formatted list of fully documented bugs with examples and suggestions from the community is useful for any developer, provided that a) it has all the necessary information regarding the bug and/or b) has links to specific posts, videos, threads; “naked” lists which purely say that bugs exist are not really helpful indeed. Proper lists may also let the person dealing with a specific bug notice something in an adjacent bug what was actually the key to solving the problem. This also serves as a good argument in assigning more time to a specific class if a coder wants to get it from his uppers. New bugs, though, should still get separate threads regardless for ANet’s forum combers to easily register.

However, since I’ve personally lost faith in this idea after a certain incident with a piece of my feedback, I’m not eager to run this list anymore. Again, if anyone feels like s/he can update the list to its current ~30-40 form with proper formatting, grammar, forum/youtube links etc. and make it into a new thread, I would be happy to “move” there.

There was also Ventari and his followers in the Maguuma that planted and founded the Pale Tree.

Would be an interesting twist if this centaur turns out to be an ally offering help in protecting the Pale Tree… say, from an evil corrupted Nightmare Tree which is the source of the vines (because as we know from sylvari personal story, there’s more than one sylvari Tree in Tyria).

As an average usually PU mesmer in my unfavored game mode, I can say that PU mesmers can be wrecked by really skillful non-PU mesmers easily. They are not a problem for people who know how to play, and do not dominate in high-level play either.

Removing Aspect Skills with "Swap" Button

in Living World

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Removing skills from picked up aspects with “weapon swap” button (like any bundle) instead of skill 5 (like tonics) would be very welcome if aspects are going to appear again in the future episodes.

The tonic mechanic was fine in Cliffs where you rarely had to fight and transformation had no time limit, but in both Dry Top and LS where you can pick up (often randomly) respawning aspects by mistake and use them instead of your weapons, it is an annoyance which can lead to you getting downed or jumping/rushing off a cliff to death. Maybe even interacting to get aspects instead of insta-receiving them would’ve been better for a zone full of enemies.

Zepherite favor level in Dry Top

in Living World

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

What am I missing?

AFAIK it works this way:

  • For the first 40 calm minutes in the hour, you can help Zephyrites and get to tier 4.
  • For the next 20 sandstorm minutes in the hour, you can still buy things from merchants but not increase the favor.
  • On the hour, everything resets.

I’ve turned up in T4 maps multiple times naturally. All it takes is a commander to lead people to the events when they appear and finish them rapidly. You can ask for a taxi in LFG to T4 map, though, as some people are kind enough to provide it to others.

The Real Reasoning behind Nomad's Gear

in Living World

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

…is neither gold sink nor WvW commanders nor trollish unkillable wet noodle WvW specs.

The only circumstances in which this gear can make sense in the whole zerk-meta-driven game is if we lose the ability to easily rally at the closest waypoint in the map during the upcoming large boss fight(s).

  • If there are no waypoints in your map, you can’t get back as you’ll lose your shard because of the megaservers system.
  • It means that if you’re dead, you have to be revived – and that’s a problem when a boss is 1-shotting any zerker not actively dodging, evading and blocking.
  • If you can’t outlive your enemies and everybody goes down, you lose. A map-wide dungeon wipe.
  • If there’s an “unrevivable” penalty after you’ve been dead for some time (like “sinked into sand”), it makes things even harder.
  • 2-week unlimited Inquest Revive Orb (with a chance at sprockets), now in Gem Store!

It all makes sense. NOW, PANIC!

Next patch (7/15/14) - "Entanglement"

in Living World

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

I find some of the theories here puzzling.

If you visualize a ley line as an underground river, and the vines as a sponge or seaweed, that makes it simple: the sponge weeds are consuming the water and rapidly growing through the tunnel of the underground river, containing the rest of it inside itself. The waypoints are like small ponds near the river; so the vines grow towards them too, trying to eat the energy out of them (or rather, out of the waypoint stones – the one at Fort Salma will be cracked open).

The same is going to happen at Fort Salma – the artifacts from the Tower of Nightmares which are stored there are like a large lake for the vines, they will grow there and consume them regardless of what’s build nearby – a Pact fort, a norn brewery or an amusement park run by skritt.

Vine Backpack with Purple Glow (Meta Rewards)

in Living World

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Here’s what I think the problem with meta achievements was:

  • Daily Living Story counted towards the meta, so you could skip as much inconvenient achievements as you liked.
  • LS achievements were mostly silly, grindy (“kill X new mobs”) and easy, people didn’t feel those were “achievements” and could burn through them in 1 day.
  • LS achievements sometimes relied on random zerg too much, so you could never get several simply because you weren’t lucky enough to be in the right map – which caused frustration and discontent as these weren’t personal achievements.
  • People ignored the meta skins and still wanted to get more rewards from playing content (as direct drops) instead of themed gear in Gemstore.

There aren’t however many problems with meta achievements here, apart from maybe people who were doing counter-productive things in the limited time they had to get the time-gated reward, and by this making other people’s lives harder. But since the story achievements are now fully personal, this problem no longer exists, and the meta reward can return.

The only problem we might have now is people who’re unable to complete these (rather easy IMO) achievements even in a party, but 1) that’s an L2P issue and 2) they now have as much time as they need to get those rewards.

So, here’s how I would’ve distributed the rewards in this LS:

  • Give out Adventurer’s Scarf to everyone who completed 6 out of 9 episode achievements (so that people who’re terrible at, say, jumping still have options).
  • Put Adventurer’s Goggles into hidden chests and tradeable (as it is now).
  • Make Adventurer’s Mantle craftable using both components and account bound (as it is now).

This way, we would’ve had:

  • A direct reward for direct “work”, which is now absolutely personal.
  • An RNG reward for playing content with randoms, which can be bought instead if you don’t feel like playing with them.
  • An extra reward for those who’ve done both.

I think that’s how it should be and hope to see it in next episodes

It has always puzzled me that we dress ourselves in the costumes of our hated enemies. Karka tentacle backpacks, scarlet backpacks, aetherblade outfits and slick packs…its like the allies winning world war 2 and then dressing as the Reich.

Let’s say you’re a real-world hunter who managed to kill a bear with his hands and a knife. Now you’re looking for something to put on your manly necklace. That little pink glass thingy with a smiling cat on it is the best choice, right?

I never had problems with that. Since long ago drinking wine from the skull of your foe and putting tiger claws in a necklace were a means of telling about your feats to both friends and foes. Since GW2 pictures a savage world to a large extent, it makes perfect sense for our heroes to carry trophies they picked from the dead bodies of their foes to demonstrate their own power.

I miss the rewards for completing the achievements myself. This RNG BS is annoying.

I want that too. With the previous meta system, you were relying on the zerg often; currently, you can actually get rewarded for your own efforts. Just make it available at, say, 70% of achievements – and that’s it.

The logic of "Defiance"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Instead of having to get through 5 stacks of defiance then one CC, I would rather all CC goes through, but only has 1/5 the effect (and their skills are not interrupted and go on cd, but only delayed).

Or maybe something like that:

  • Each stack of Defiance gives you a 1/x chance of your CC to succeed.
  • If the skill fails, 1 stack of Defiance is removed.
  • If the skill succeeds, the stacks of Defiance are reset to the initial value.
  • The base amount of stacks may need to be increased (like, not 1+N of players, but 3 or 5+N of players, or N*coefficient+N).
  • Skills which cause bosses to move (pull, push, fear) may be turned into pure interrupts… but that’s a very tricky matter of balancing between disallowing rangers to knock bosses out of AoEs and allowing smart boss pulls.

PROs:

  • When all your team members use interrupts at the correct time, you have a good chance of interrupting. If all party members save multiple CC skills till the right moment, the interrupt is almost guaranteed.
  • Eliminates the punishment to the whole team when just 1 member spams a CC skill too soon and resets stacks to a huge number (Leech at Grenth as a good example).
  • It makes sense logically: “He may or may not be stunned if I’m lucky enough”.

CONs:

  • May be hard to find a spot where it works but not breaks and results in stunlocking.
  • Randomness is usually bad as it replaces coordination for a certain result with mindless spam for a chance of a result.

Attached is the path. Some of them i notice are flickering, some aren’t but have vines and some have both the flicker and the vine.

Pretty much pointing to Lion’s Arch, where the Breachmaker disturbed the ley line. I wonder if the next map we get is the one between LA and Kessex hills, and not the rest of Dry Top.

Maybe now we’re able to see how the ley line continues, the vines seem to follow it.

Hmm… I’m not sure about that exactly. If it was following the ley line surge that the Breachmaker sent off, it would have went through Metrica Province, since the surge was clearly shown to go through the ley line intersection beneath the Thaumanova Reactor during the little cinematic.

Well, I also wondered why that one wasn’t going through Thaumanova, but I think it just splits into two like the one on the top left here – http://youtu.be/MjfybC7pm-I?t=15s. From the movie, the ley line’s also going through an area with human-style windmills, and those are definitely neither in Caledon nor in Metrica.

Character Scaling - Event Scaling

Lishtenbird.2814

The thing is, that’s not how A-Net promoted this game.
And as i said before, i don’t want HP-Bags or anything, i want them to involve more buffs here and there, or even give bigger events the holy trinity when it comes to enemy NPC’s.

But you know…your post brings up a really, really stupid question.
If you want an MMO in which you can go around with a high level character killing low levels left and right with a single swing of your weapon….why do you play a game in which you get downgraded in the first place?

P.S.: You don’t just get low level stuff in lower areas, you actually get, even if it is just a chance, items on your level as well for less work…which again, goes with the principle of equal opportunity so, if we go with “I’m level 80 i should be able to kill everything” we should remove that chance of high level items as well since you don’t want EQUAL opportunity it seems. Just saying.

I’ve been saying that they should’ve tuned down that many lvl 80 items and champ bags from low-level zones since the announcement of megaservers; the particular post about it got merged into the Megathread, though.

As for 1-shotting… Sorry, but I’m not a warrior, I main a mesmer locked into Traveler’s runes, so it takes 2-3 hits and some build up time anyway;)

As far as rewards are concerned, you’re definitely exaggerating I like the place in which the scaling is; I still can’t kill weak things by looking at them, but the ones I 2-shot actually drop barbs and not vials of powerful blood. The reward for investing in leveling is not over the top, it is balanced (though I admit it was better before the mob nerf which came with ferocity change and the new awful trait system). I simply can’t get as much from killing centaurs during the Ulgoth chain even on a staff guardian than from an Orr temple event. Lvl 80 blue and green gear is not worth much and no one cares about it, yellow chances are adjusted already, and I definitely do not get tons of Heavy Moldy Bags full of T5 and T6 mats from lvl 10 mobs.

Discussion: iLeap [Rework]

in Mesmer

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

However, that does not fix pathing issues when the clone runs back to the target after the swap takes place (if it survives that long, which sometimes it does).

Yes, the problem will still exist, but honestly, I do not really care how long it takes the clone to get back to the target after I’ve used it for the main skill. And it will take the same time as for any other clones, dodge clones included.

An additional suggestion might be to simply make this a projectile skill similar to magnetic leap.

That sounds like GS2 a lot. Not that it’s a bad thing, though. It actually creates the same clone on target, but lets people see it coming. Maybe the projectile can look like an actual clone/phantasm just to leave the spirit of the skill.

What if when we used iLeap we immediately teleported to the target and summoned a clone and then Swap would work like the thief Infiltrator’s Return and return us to the spot where we initially used iLeap while immobilizing enemies around where we teleported from? This would keep the misdirection flavor, keep our clone in the fight (for shatters or on death traits), and give main hand sword an escape option similar to staff.

Would make more sense than the current useless thing, I say. Even if it works the way round than as of now, it’s still better than a clone which rarely reaches the target or a clone which reaches the boss just to die instantly. Instant teleport sounds fine, but a war/guard leap can be better because 1) it adds mobility to a very slow class with broken swiftness and without target requirement 2) and at the same time lets your target see you coming, as it is now.

If we add a Counter skill similar to what Carighan suggested, we may get even more misdirection and higher skill tricks:

  • You start channeling Leap. If you click the skill again while channeling (use “counter” skill), you leap at the target and immobilize foes and a clone is created at your position. Now, you can use Swap to change places with your clone.
  • You start channeling Leap and let it finish. A clone is created and leaps at your target just as you would’ve, immobilizing foes. Now, you can use Swap to change places with your clone.

Moral: being new has nothing to do with being unable/uneager to search for information. And if you’re spending real money on a game to which you’re completely new without doing any research, then, well… you are paying for convenience and are punished for laziness.

You guys are forgetting something very important here: the Chinese servers. Remember how unidentified dyes work there? You still loot them from mobs, but you have to buy a gemstore item to identify the dye (RNGs the dye), and THEN the dye is account bound after that. If you’re looking for a specific red dye, you have to RNG a ton of gems (or gold converted to gems) to get it. Being able to spend 250 gems and get exactly what you want is incredible when you consider that.

The only reason it’s available in the NA/EU servers is consistency I imagine.

We’re not forgetting them, we’re just wondering that if they have separate gemstore items already (dye identifier, gem subscription programs, teleport to friend), having only this item for NA/EU doesn’t look consistent, and is rather a convenience “pay if you’re too lazy to google colors and buy from TP” item, or a “well we coded it for China anyways, so let’s just put it for NA/EU as well”.

Threads like these pop every now and then. There are generally two types of people replying:

  • People like OP who want monsters in low level areas buffed or high-level players nerfed, because otherwise they don’t have challenge and fun.
  • People like me who want everything to stay as is because we enjoy character progression and want to kill weak monsters for poor rewards in low-level areas much faster, because otherwise we think it’s boring and not fun.

If I invested in leveling and gearing my character in ascended, I deserve return on investment in form of faster kills and easier dailies. Getting to 100% map completion was rather boring already on my fully geared lvl 80. I don’t want huge HP bags with stupid AI everywhere, doubly so if they drop 1 silver stuff.

If your problem lies in running with underlevel friends, than simply gear yourself with greens of that level or take off some armour. Sorry, but I don’t want to be involved in a global solution to someone’s own personal problem

I see Blood Dye has taken a dive as supply suddenly ticked up. I think it’s the most expensive red dye that’s not part of a special gem dye set. Dropped from 2.5g to 1.9g.

Still makes zero sense. You can get 23g by converting gems to gold at the moment already, buy all red dyes, and have leftovers.

I can’t help but think that whoever was in charge of setting these gemstore prices either doesn’t bother checking the game itself (things like how much coin people make and how expensive things are in the trading post) or that they expect people to be dumb enough to fall for that.

In one case players and the reality of the game are being ignored, and in the other case their intelligence is insulted.

Reminds me of a topic where a player was angry that he had spent a lot of money on upgrade extractors to test different builds, and when I said that he would’ve had saved tons of money by converting these gems to gold straight away and then buying runes/sigils, he responded with something along “I don’t need gold, I got gems”.

At that point, I decided that such items should definitely exist for a simple reason of punishing ignorance and funding the game at the same time.

Although at first sight it might leave a bad impression on a lot of people, my guildies and I included.

Well, at this price it does, and is worse than upgrade extractor which is kinda worth it for agony infusions. The argument of “do not compare with gold, compare with dollars” doesn’t really help this item either.

On the other hand, as long as this item is not forced upon us, I take the philosophical approach and think that I’m fine with it as long as ANet gets funded but not by me. China IIRC has to pay to unlock dyes and this item may be far more useful for them – though I see no actual reason to put the item on our market then if it is the case as already gemstore is different in these two markets and can be differentiated further.

Probably a long, long, long-term item which might make sense when supplies of UNID dyes finally run out and prices for both crafting and UNIDs get high enough.

…or an item for people who totally don’t use TP and think that using gemstore is the only way to customize your character. Plus, if it lets you preview the dye (don’t know if it does), than it’s a convenience item which lets you see (almost) all shades of X colour without using third-party sites and typing in dye names.

Didn’t read the entire thread so someone might have mentioned it, but here’s my guess on what happens if this is implemented:

  • Regular flippers will be unable to flip “enough”.
  • Less gold will leave the economy because of the fee sink, causing inflation.
  • Margins will become more apparent…
  • …leading to more regular players choosing flipping as their source of income.

Without real numbers, it’s hard to guess on what it will lead to in the end, but probably one of these two options:

  • Inflation will get higher because there would be not enough flippers willing to flip “just a bit”, as TP barons may just leave at all if they weren’t interesting in playing in the first place.
  • Current inflation rates will remain, but more people who were players with limited time will be turned into flippers, and gold will simply be redistributed in smaller portions to more people.

I’d say that neither of these two situations look healthier to me than what we have now.

Discussion: iLeap [Rework]

in Mesmer

Lishtenbird.2814

How does it work for you right now with charged skills then? I mean, on other chars, we don’t have any I’m aware of.

I remember some skills with the effects firing off at the end of the channel – some golem skills from Mario IIRC, fire breath when transformed into a drake. All those require a full channel though and do not provide another effects if the channel ends sooner.

Now I actually remember that scepter 2 works like it. If you press the skill twice, it uses the 2nd spell and cancels the first. So, say, sending your clone to leap on channel end but leaping yourself on 2nd click instead sounds like a neat idea.

@Lishtenbird: Any thoughts on pursuing this conversation, about adding additional traits and skills to justify the iLeap change?

ANet’s stance, as far as I understand, is that only GM traits will be added (and made rather useless to not to have issues with balancing and build diversification). So all we can do is adjust the traits we have.

Blade Training sounds like a right place to make adjustments. Maybe, say,

Increased precision while wielding a one-handed sword or a spear. Reduces the recharge on sword and spear skills. Swap can be performed to clone’s position after its death.

As for beta Leap… Wow, I really wish we got a normal leap like that – probably with swapping back to your clone on Swap. I got so used to guardian’s GS leap now and I miss this mobility of another “slow” class a lot when I’m back on my mesmer.

List of Mesmer Bugs (Older Thread)

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Lishtenbird.2814

Since ANet started to fix things which were fine for two years but are now considered bugs, here’s another one:

  • Illusions do not inherit direct bonuses from runes/sigils such as +damage%, +critchance%, +damagevscreaturesoftype%, +damagedependingontime% etc.

Sady, the devs ignore this even on page1. :-(

This is the worst type of thread here.

If you close it, you will cause an uproar.

If you do not, it remains an eye sore and scares off new people who see classes with lots of broken mechanics, the community which is frustrated if not infuriated, and the total lack of communication from developers (and ubiquitous miscommunication when they do communicate).

There is just one thing which would actually solve the situation: fix these bugs and keep the community informed. Unfortunately, this option is not really an option as it requires work which has never had place in the plan.

Meh. This game really needs one “balance” dev per class. By “per class,” I mean actually plays; if not mains each class. Then, we might finally see some of this bug-cyclopedia bleeding dealt with.

This game is called “Guild Wars”, not “Guild Mess”. Go figure

Runes with damage modifier

Lishtenbird.2814

Since ANet started fixing things which were ok for two years, I believe I should list this in the bug thread as well.

Certainly as someone who only plays PvE and primarily pugs dungeons, I’d say mesmer is extremely strong and needs nerfs if anything. As someone who does sPvP or WvW or whatever you might have different opinions but Anet needs to balance the class across all modes, with the current design they can’t buff the mesmer for PvP without making it broken in PvE and vice versa.

I do not think you play mesmer if you believe that clones are extremely strong and do a lot of DPS on their own:

Mesmer clones do enough without gear modifiers, DPS would be through the roof if they got everything.

They’re the only minions that inherit stats which already makes them extremely strong in general.

Piles of silky sand

Lishtenbird.2814

I can’t see why you’d want to “farm” that. Really, people in this game seek for farming spots in new releases only, it seems.

To me it’s kind of bonus obtainable loot and that’s cool enough. You get it, that’s cool, you don’t – nevermind, it’s not so important

Agreed.

I like this sand thingy far more than unidentifiable objects and such. Getting something out of “nothing” is nice, not getting – I don’t care, it just dropped by itself.

Sure you got a positive experience by doing something “right” without knowing it there, but the far more common scenario will be that people simply look up the achievements on dulfy or whatever beforehand, and spoil the story for themselves.

You have the right to complain, sure.
But I think this is a better idea.
You shouldn’t be on a rush to make the achievements when the main focus on a living story should be the story. The achievements are an added bonus for later.

I get the idea, but the problem is, people who do not care will do it anyway. They will check the guide to know what gonna happen, skip-skip-skip kill-kill on first run, then do the same. For them, it’s nothing more than an annoyance; for those who care, it wouldn’t matter as they’ll play the story anyway.

If I got the “No one left behind” during the first run, I know I would’ve felt really good for this small bit; same for purple crystal – I would’ve been rewarded by the game by doing something “smart” which didn’t involve walking to a green star and killing a mob with swords above his head. Or if I discovered the JP in the instance and jumped onto the haystack on first run, spending more than an hour on it for fun, would it be “fun” to do it once again?

But if I didn’t want to discover it myself and looked in a guide, why should I be forced to play through it twice? You do not get the achievement for doing it twice; you can only get it for doing the correct thing, so the “play it twice” part is simply not needed. There’s enough evident guiding for “wrong” players already in the game, why punish “right” players because of their existence?

For me, the only part I really enjoyed was Scarlet’s room. Aerin fight was fairly good – better than I expected – but I rushed through it and don’t feel an urge to do it again, even though I will for achievements. Both inquest parts were simply annoying for me; it is not hard, it’s just grindy and boring – the same reason I still don’t have PS finished. Yes, some will say that you can’t really come up with anything else in an MMO – but that’s it for me, I enjoy exploring new maps and doing random events or looking for llamas with a torch for hours in a wrong mine or fighting new champs but I click-click-click through all this forced storytelling in the same way as I fast-read through many, many evident things on the Internet where it takes a glimpse to get the whole idea and move on.

However I agree that on the 2nd and later runs, all dialog should be skippable in some form. Perhaps a waypoint you can go to to declare “I don’t want to listen to this again” and then it skips it all. Similar to how you can skip talking to your friends in the first instance, but for the entire conversations instead.

I would be happy to see it implemented, but I don’t think they’ll do it – with a “it’s already short anyways, just do it!” excuse, which is rather valid.

Warrior healing signet

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

IMO they should just make it like Signet of Vampirism, where you get healed whenever you’re hit. Maybe have it start off as a percentage of damage taken or a set amount that scales well with healing power. But it should NOT be happening all the time without any specific criteria for it to turn on, because it isn’t a condition cleansing signet or a boon giving one.

Get healing effect every 2 seconds if you’ve dealt direct damage during the previous 2 seconds.

Works when you’re fighting, shuts down when you’re running away.

Mobs that don't trigger traits

in Living World

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

It is not just traits. There are also consumables and sigils that are affected.

Wanted to start a thread about Bloodlust sigil as well, with the following content:

Q: ANet, could you inform us if there will be more mobs with no exp gain in the future or you’re going to fix them to work with stacking sigils? At the moment, sigils like Bloodlust are getting more and more useless because of this and the recent water “fix”; should we wait for an alteration to theses mobs or just overwrite the sigils with something more working?

By the way, if it can’t be fixed properly, granting 1xp per kill should solve all the problems and I believe cannot be abused.

Lishtenbird.2814

I would prefer to have achievements awarded (not “unlocked”) if you manage to do them on the first run. The achievement panel can still be locked until you finish the episode.

Like, I managed to protect Seraphs on 1st run naturally, and I managed to take the purple crystal and attack Aerin naturally as well.

Why is it good?

  • You get a very positive experience for doing something “right” without knowing it.
  • You get a very negative experience for seeing you’ve done something “right” straight away but you have to do it again because something wasn’t “unlocked”.
  • Replaying stories for achievements is boring, and sometimes even frustrating. Especially if you have 1 of 3 but have to listen to all the unskippable dialogues and to click through all the text and then grind trash mobs again to advance to the important part. It feels like a time sink, even if it’s a minor one, and I see no point in it in a B2P no-sub game.
  • People who prefer to use guides will not be forced to play the same story (about which they’ve read already and obviously do not care) once again.

…and I really miss Meta achievement rewards like some themed backpacks, by the way. That’s another topic, but it really extended the freshness of each release for me.

The Warrior Meta Paradox

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

No, I don’t. It is very easy to get the ‘best’ gear in the game. I got it, so I only play the things I find enjoyable (WvW). I don’t play PvE aside from the occassional super easy dungeon for a little cash in which you could roll anything,

“You” is not you but a player. “Best gear” has nothing to do here. I may be enjoying world events for the process, or the loot, or only when both are present, or I may be farming for a full set of legendaries, and I cannot enjoy it on class A, because I can enjoy only, say, 2 aspects of the game on it, while class B can enjoy 7 aspects of the game. And if I want to enjoy that part of the game, I have to roll another class.

No, it does not. Give every class the ability to escape if they want to.

And give every class heavy armour if they want. And give every class largest HP pool.

When you’re balancing classes, there’s but two ways:

  • Give class A ability to X but not Y, and class B ability to Y but not X.
  • Give everything to everyone and make the differences purely cosmetic.

When I bought the game as it was advertised, I thought GW2 used the second one. Now I see that it’s the first (except for the warriors).

And what is to say that this game shouldn’t or couldn’t be balanced more regarding 1v1? Or at least with 1v1 in mind?

If they overhaul the whole class system, they can do it and I wouldn’t mind, because it would most likely mean I can really play and enjoy anything with any class. But at the moment, we have a swiss-knife-warrior next to a tin-opener-mesmer – and the game should choose which way of the above mentioned ones it’s actually going. With the recent Ready Up in mind, it’s most likely the 1st one – definite team roles, strengths and kryptonites.

Lishtenbird.2814

For you, the game should be about the PC at the expense of the open world content and ambience. For me, and for Guild Wars 2, it’s about the world as a whole since it’s a cooperative, shared environment. Neither approach is wrong, but we decided to put more of our resources into bringing the world to life. I don’t regret that at all.

I for one am happy with this choice. I enjoy listening to world’s random chit-chats which make it alive (and often in a fun way!), but I skip spoken scenes in things like PS because a) I rarely think that my character’s voice matches the chosen VA and b) when not being an “environmental noise”, spoken dialogues are time consuming and reading is faster and clearer.

The Warrior Meta Paradox

in Profession Balance

Lishtenbird.2814

because if you do, you will realize warriors cannot do everything by themselves alone.

warriors can do a variety of things, provided if they equip the right weapons along with the right traits, stats, utility skills.

but warriors cannot do everything.

enforced mutual reliance is already in the game.
are you aware that warriors can only set up a fire field, and only by using long bow?

other professions can set up other kind of combo fields.

various different combo fields, that, is, team work.

Heavy reliance of warriors is a well-known problem and is backed up by a total, complete absence of “zerk wars only or kick!” LFGs… oh wait.

While a world speed clear record team will not consist of purely warriors, PUG groups will. Why? Because it works very good without any combo fields, it’s fast and easy, it provides high return for low risk (as opposed to very high return for high risk in groups which require perfect teamwork). That is a clear indication of a problem with warriors, it exists no matter how many times you call it a “myth”.

I don’t have to farm, I don’t have to zerg, I don’t have to play one of two classes to be able to do what I like most. Or at least, that’s how it is now.

Except that you already do. If you want to tag mobs in world boss and temple events (what I “liked most” prior to megazerger patch), you have to roll guardian because you gonna get a tiny portion of loot if you play, say, a mesmer instead. Or you should jump on ele for mist form if you want to easily kill Scarlet with the no-knockback achievement. And that’s how it works everywhere and will even if warrior gets nerfed: as long as there’s no trinity, you still can do anything solo (because no one’s going to nerf wars by 50%), but you’re less efficient in content X than when on class B or when in a group.

I just don’t understand why it is that only two classes (thief and mesmer) should be allowed to escape from any situation, or kite and reset any fight.

Let’s rephrase it to how it is now: I just don’t understand why it is that only three classes (thief, mesmer and warrior) should be allowed to escape from any situation, or kite and reset any fight. Does it make any more sense?

The official stance is that content in this game is not balanced around 1v1 and duels cannot be used to measure balance. If warriors are stripped of their mobility, they finally start needing other classes to control the group (or rely on their limited abilities in it) so that they can roll in their heavy bodies and start delivering damage – this makes sense.

It would be pretty much as bad as pre-buffs Warrior where they couldn’t avoid being kited to death.

Oh, so we finally found the thing which was supposed to be this profession’s kryptonite! But wait, it shouldn’t be, because being kited to death is terrible for a warrior, while being chased to death is totally okay for other classes.

Catch your target and kill it. If you can’t hold it, it escapes. And then stings you in the weak spot. That’s how it has always been, from dinosaurs to fantasy high-defence high-damage creatures.

Well, your examples are full of hard-hitting athletic types, aren’t they? Boromir or an Uruk-Hai leader aren’t slow and ponderous characters.

You have a point. But you should agree that Boromir’s defence is closer to “ranger” Legolas’s than to any monster’s, and lower defence is what gives them more mobility.

[Discussion] Balance focus

in Mesmer

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Ah, from the title I thought you were going to discuss how we can balance the doubly broken Focus…

As I said earlier, I think that it is wrong to balance mesmer around PvP solely.

That whole Ready Up discussion was a big surprise to me as the game advertised itself as a casual non-trinity (here goes the infamous misquote) “play how you want” game. When I read class description, I had no idea that my class is supposed to be a “PvP class”; I chose the class that sounded most fun to me and jumped into PvE. It was clear to me that difference in classes was more or less cosmetical and they could more or less do the same things.

Only later, after hundreds of hours, could I discover that mesmers primarily exist to annoy unexperienced non-mesmers with PU and clone spam or to be a portal/veil bot, and that I had to do ridiculous things to tag anything in PvE and get equally rewarded. So the game turned out pretty much as a misadvertising which led to customer dissatisfaction.

Did I say gw2 warrior is a archetype warrior? I said it’s the archetype profession of GW2.

My comment was not connected to yours. I’m simply comparing what I see in other fantasy works with what I see in GW2. And generally, higher defence is followed by lower mobility (and it makes perfect sense), which I see as the main problem in GW2’s warrior.

However, what you are describing is the archetype knight. Warrior doesn’t have to be necessarily a knight…

I might have a different image of a warrior, but what I think of when I hear “warrior” in fantasy context, it is something large, brutal, savage and having high innate defence and attack (charr?), which is pretty far from how I see a “knight” (which is far closer to guardian in my vision and “lighter”). Warriors are also something that is usually incapable of dealing with magic – but with GW2’s conditions and boons, sigils and runes, it doesn’t really matter much, and obviously (without mounts) they are not able to compete with fast moving assasins or teleporting mages.
