D/D – Best burst damage, best DPS, high reward/Low risk with skill.
D/P – Extreme survivability. Reasonable damage.
S/D – Extreme control 1v1. Reasonably okay 1v2-3 players. Useless in 1vZerg with good players, because you can’t kill anything without dying. Reasonable in zerg vs zerg.
P/D – Wild Bill youtube video shows you multiple players who can’t handle bleeding thieves. My opinion is that it’s an irritating build that can mostly shut down low to mid-high skilled players. There are probably players that cannot be killed no matter skilled you are with P/D.
P/P – Uhhh. You can only go glass cannons with this. It’s pretty powerful if you are in a _zerg, but it’s completely useless in 1v1.
And that’s about it. 4 weapon sets that completely relies on stealth. Extremely boring, tbh. I keep hoping for some changes in thieves but it never happens, and I find it amusing to ask for our opinions but never get to make any ground changing stuff on thieves, like a nice dueling/acrobatic thief that doesn’t need to constantly stealth himself. Or poison/condition builds that’s viable on 1v1 fights.
Wiki states unload as 1 3/4 seconds, has anything changed?
Also, can I ask if there’s any other changes if I use 10/30/0/30/0? Quick recovery + quick pockets = 5 init gain every 10 seconds, or 0.5 init per sec. How much DPS will be gained/lost?
For WvWvW I use 0/30/30/10/0. I prefer it over the other builds that are more about Ini Regen. I rarely have an issue with Regen.
As for how to beat my spec. Pretty much just catch by surprise. I am not a great player but I rarely lose to D/D thieves.
D/P is a good counter to D/D. S/D does give me problems though.
Are you serious? There’s a lack of init regen with 0/30/30/10/0, I simply don’t see how you can get escape from any zergs at all. Roll for initiative seems to be the only saving grace but it’s unstable imo.
You are correct in that i cannot stay behind the lines forever.
I do not use Roll for Initiative. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Opportunist_ is really all I have besides http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Infusion_of_Shadow.
To be fair i can not run around in stealth for ever like the other build but my damage is better and I can get into a Zerg kill 1-2 and get out no problem. I rarely lose a 1v1 or a 1v2. Now I am not very good. Not compared to some of the thieves out there. But I kill D/D thieves with out an issue most of the time. No class really gives me a huge problem unless the player is above average in skill.
The amount of people that will stand there in my smoke screen is insane. GS wars and D/D thieves act like they do not understand the concept of Blindness.
I have seen players who purposely interrupt the heartseeker after one casts black powder, and that’s a full 9 initiative lost or 3/4 of your initiatives gone. Not too sure about you, but a lot of the opponents I see in Blackgate/SOR are strong enough to bring thieves down quickly.
For WvWvW I use 0/30/30/10/0. I prefer it over the other builds that are more about Ini Regen. I rarely have an issue with Regen.

Basilisk poison + backstab, swap weapon set to S/P pistol whip + haste, if you fail immediately cast shadow refuge to regain init and back off. If anything, a full burst damage tends to break any thief you come across.
On 1v1 I use Shadow refuge/Haste/Shadowstep with a combo of Lyssa Runes (where you lose all conditions and gain all buffs) and finalize it with the above combo. It tends to work wonders on low HP players. Do not use this on 1v2, it tends to get ugly very fast.
On 1vX I use Shadow refuge/Blinding powder/Shadowstep, where the focus is on survival.
I use +100 power, + 70 vitality, along with superior sharpening stone, and I use a D/D build, and my base power with food is 3000 along with 80% + burst damage, approximately 16 K hp (because I have 2 legendaries, incinerator and bolt on each weapon set).
In theory, D/P users can try the same combination above (because I tried it with Lyssa runes), but I find that Scholar runes + 1 divinity rune tend to do more damage (also tried this), but in the end the legendary weapons tend to take off too many critical % points to effectively win in a 1v1 battle.
I came up with multiple builds and traits and conclude that D/D offers the best DPS and survivability. D/P has a high focus on survival and you will never kill certain professions, because they can outheal or damage you enough so you can’t get too close.
If you play really well, you can still probably kill 1v1 players with a haste combo with DP/SP too. I fought with multiple thieves players once with Scholar set with D/P and pretty much KOed almost everyone with the haste combo, even when I’m not good at it. The one who didn’t go down kept on ensuring his HP is 80% and above when he fights.

kill shot:
- 2s cast time of obvious animation of a guy crouching and pointing his gun at you (from 1k range)
- not 100% crit chance(but has a +9% crit rate modifier and a +12% damage modifier)
- 10s cooldown(8s traited)
- requires full adrenaline (build in combat, or instantly with the use of heal/utility. i.e- takes less than skill cd)backstab:
- done by someone who is invisible(in melee range, has to be from behind)
- no build up time or pre-combat requirement(except stealthing, placing yourself behind the target in melee range, and hoping he won’t turn around; or using the burst chain of 4 skills which you can stun break out of)
- 100% crit chance (with a trait that most thieves choose to ignore)
- no cooldown (on the skill. but 45s cooldown on the burst chain)
- no initiative cost(for the skill; but 6+ initiative / utility use to stealth)edited for you.
November 2012 video showing single crit cuts against sub-80s while hiding in a zerg
Try doing this with kill shot:
Solo vs zerg, uninterrupted footage, kills 30+ by chaining backstabs and stealthed stomps without getting killed once – again, ALL of it while utterly surrounded by hostile players.
Thieves who compare kill shot builds with backstab builds have no clue how to play a thief properly.
The difference in actual gameplay viability and killing ability in any situation is night and day.
Let me state that this particular thief is very skilled, in fact extremely skilled.
1) He mentions in his video before it is next to impossible to kill certain professions like an elementalist.
- This means that the particular elementalist has chosen to use a very specific build, like how this yashi player traits his thief. By balancing everything down, it is next to impossible to beat the player one on one.
- I have not seen a capable guardian in his video, but I imagine he’s going to have a hard time killing him.
2) The thief player almost always target the weakest players, or glass cannons.
3) The enemies are slow to respond or simply not skilled enough to react.
I have played since the beginning of the GW2 launch, and even traited the LOL 3 shot burst (mug CND stab), used the backstab, D/P stealth, bleed thief build, but people are jumping to the warrior’s defence without even thinking how the warrior plays. You think he’s going out to the front lines and hitting someone? Rofl.
Do I think 1 vs zerg thief is wrong? Yeah, somewhat here and there, but if that’s the case I want nerfs on other professions too. You guys should just copy the best builds around and see why the other classes are so irritating to deal with.
Why thieves are complaining to the devs why other traits and skills are not buffed up? S/P is useless now without haste and poison thief is nothing short of silly (I remember it’s 300 AOE for shared poison), and dual pistols are pretty much gimmicky 900 range glass cannons as compared to rifle warriors with 20000 HP (just lmao.) and even survival builds with rifles can be found.
That dude out there is staying far away, and sniping you at 1500 Range, hitting 2-3 targets with a 9000-18000 damage tag on every 8 + 1.5 seconds (if I read the traiting correctly), and I experienced that gunshot power on chokepoints like bridges and Lord’s room.
I don’t want to refit my warrior with the rifle build because my own thief has 2 legendaries on him, but I think I’m going to start considering it.

13878 damage on my level 80 thief.
Sure, 2434 armor isn’t very high, and 16901 HP isn’t very high, but it actually took off over 80% of my life (and down me in one shot because I was slightly injured). The so called thief burst is CnD/mug/backstab (3 hits that allows users to stun break in time.), but this just takes the cake. Can we have some fix please, Anet?
Or maybe it’s time to switch to my lvl 80 warrior and cheese.
To the 3 SOS users with gears in the JP, I hope you had fun chasing my thief for 15 mins.
There’s a variable that you’ve probably not taken into consideration.
The items that you think you’ll have to grind for could actually be given as a boss/chest drop. So I wouldn’t look too far into it until it’s proven otherwise.
Uhh… ANet’s chest drop rate during halloween was abysmal. I don’t expect anything from ANet after that. If anything, the drop rate is so low till one can only call it grinding. Anything that rewards the players too much will definitely be nerfed, hardly buffed. But yeah, this is really the last straw.
Naturally everyone conveniently ignores that the number of tokens rewarded scales up with the difficulty so the numbers being thrown around here are grossly over-exaggerated…
I would think that anet tends to set high difficulty bosses like the one in straits of destruction. Any casual players will find it impossible to farm that fractals, punishing them in wvw for that ‘you don’t need to grind’ mentality.
Looks like my decision to quit the game is valid. Yuck.
I heard some rumors about 1000+ fractals to make an item, and the fractal drop is 5 per run?
I’m going to re-roll as a sith in SWTOR and stop with Grind Wars 2 (3 months after triforge pendant is out, a new tier surfaces R.O.F.L), or at least until thieves receive better buffs and fixes to poisons.
Besides the awful nerf on thief without even buffing it that much (poisons needed buff, also needed fixing a bug on caltrops taking away poisons), the worst thing is how the final little bit of fire attack animation on my incinerator while attacking an enemy has disappeared. The bias on GS and hammer is staggering.
This has lead me to think the devs hasn’t done anything to make other legendary weapons to look better. 3 months after foefire, triforge pendants, infinite light and other exotics, ascended tiered items came out.
It is understated to say disappointing, mainly because hundreds of gold have been flushed down the toilet with a new set of grind items, or at least required to grind their way through to replace the ascended tier looks through transmutation. I think I’m done with this game. I’ll finish this final “big patch” content and move on to SWTOR.
Edit: After restarting GW2, the fire animation on strike for incinerator came back.

Next thing we know they are still going to accuse thieves for being able to hold rifles and shoot 20k damage from 1200 range, because they automatically assume it’s a thief thing rather than a warrior class.
Conclusion: Just blame the thief over and over, regardless of how powerful guardians are in tpvp, or mesmer in general, or how warriors shoot out 20 k damages, etc.
Going to the side of the enemy rather than moving around aimlessly is better. This skill really sucks.
Kevingway is right in a sense. There’s only one single build that allows thieves to play like a dueling artist, and I wish there are more of such builds.
I can’t even tell whether it’s intended or a bug.
Edit: There. I changed the topic.
You know when you complain about that 1 shot build… I tried to come up with some other niche build so that the kittens will be quiet at last, and I found caltrops (both dodge caltrops and caltrops skill) take away your poison counters. And it doesn’t even activate the poisons when it bleeds the enemies. Oh did I mention, superior rune of the mad king takes away your basilisk poison too?
Nice ANet. Anything else you want to be counter-intuitive in? Condition build failure, burst damage incoming nerf, pistol whip nerf, heartseeker nerf. Next build in, everyone exploits on rendering thief next. Hope you guys enjoy your gameplay in the future.
(edited by LoneWolfie.1852)
So I got 6 runes of the mad king, tried to combo it with basilisk elite skill, oops, the HAWKS/EAGLES/PIGEONS triggered (not ravens) resets my poison counters to 0 and the enemies/enemy didn’t even get poisoned at all with basilisk poison. So much for new runes (and a waste of 6 G). Please fix this error asap.
1) Don’t trigger my poisons for thieves.
Or
2) All enemies get poisoned (I wish.)
(edited by LoneWolfie.1852)
Seriously. The players are whining because they don’t have a clue on how to handle the 1 shot thieves (who basically does nothing except to wait 45 seconds all the time). That’s fine, I’m getting bored of killing unskilled players too, so the only way to make nice between us is to achieve a compromise by buffing skill sets. When was the last time thief received a buff? LOL.
Pretty much what happened. It’s a bug.
Awe, why don’t you play a thief in WvW and try using against full exotic players who are skilled? And honestly, balancing WvW is honestly silly instead of a PvP scenario is just plain silly.
In my opinion (as a thief player), just adding a 5 ini cost to backstab would change a lot of things.. Sure you keep the initial burst, but then you REALLY do pay for it like people claim (oh I BS then I can’t do anything- BULL).. I can CND/BS repeatedly forever with my build even throwing a heartseeker in after every BS to keep gap closed. It’s a bit cheesy IMO / no I don’t use glass full burst build or use any stuns.
As others have mentioned making it so you can’t pre-cast CND then Steal would make a huge difference as well, it feels cheesy and gimmicky every time I do it.
Anyone who thinks the thief burst doesn’t need tweaked in some way is a poor player who is scared to adapt to a thief that would actually take skill to score kills.
When I can insta-gib a true 80 in wvw and I’m NOT berserker built, SOMETHING is wrong.
BTW – Those who scream oh just get some toughness.. My Mesmer is in FULL Knights gear armor/weapon/trinkets(exotic except for trinkets atm AND I have 25 points down the toughness trait line) and I can still be burst down in one venom by a glass thief.. If my Blink happens to be on CD when I get hit well GG, that is just lame IMO.
First off, but if you blink is on CD you will destroy them basically every time.
Honestly I feel that the only thing that needs to be done is put a .1 second cast on steal so that you can’t precast with it. This would hurt a couple of other precast usages but would force the thief to shadowstep in then have 1 second to cast and land CnD or would force them to use another mechanic to enter stealth or close the gap.
This would effectively force players using the all signets insta-gib combo to drop a signet for either a stealth or gap closer either of which would be on longer cool down than steal.
The main reason why CnD is paired is because the precast time for CnD is atrocious. Even if you shadowstep and hit that CnD it will never hit in time due to lag or miss half the time because the enemy dodges away. Makes me wonder why non-thieves are even trying to suggest solutions which will effectively cripple the thief class.
Wait…
Oh wait, I do play Thief… And I don’t use a LOLBURST build. I have a sustained backstab build, which means I do less damage per burst but use CND and Backstab continually during a battle. I am well aware of the cast time of CND, this is where actual skill and awareness comes into the situation so you can land it correctly the majority of the time. “Lag” which is hardly much of a factor in this game, is NOT something to base balance off of and is a lame excuse to boot.
The only constant, sustainable viable backstab build I know of is S/D combination where there are a number of utilities, daze, blind, crippling strike, stealth, health regain under stealth and immobilize. That LOLBURST you mention is indeed a one hit wonder because every other skill and traits went into that. Is it gimmicky, sure. Is it overpowered in PVP? Erm…. I think I have huge trouble winning points or even escaping other players after using everything, and that cooldown is every 45 seconds.
Is it overpowered against WvW players? More often that not, killing anything below 80 and 80 with master gear is cheese easy. Full exotic geared players have a fighting chance and I think it’s 70/30 if the thief got it right, otherwise skilled players will hit endure pain or use their mesmer skill to run away.
The problem here is really the whiners are now coming in with their glass builds or master/rare gear and complaining about how instantgib build that has a 45 seconds cooldown should be nerfed. Get your exotics and learn to trait. The build isn’t unbeatable.
Agree on the haste part, disagree on the CnD+steal combo. You can break off the basilisk poison anytime now with a stun breaker. If you change any mechanism of the burst backstab combo, it ends up useless for thieves as an assassin build. Other gimmicky builds end up as either annoying stealth thief, condition damage thief, glass cannon pistol thief.
In the first place such squish thieves can easily get killed after failing to do their combo, i.e get the enemy to 20% health, then they use heal and counter with their own chain damage, instantly killing the squishy 10-13K hp thief. This has happened many times in WvW to me.
It’s a one hit gimmick wonder, but are there any better builds that DOESN’T involve rendering build, or weak kitten condition damage?
The reason why you think glass warrior is weaker is because you’re in a WvW situation. You simply can’t run away (because everyone is hitting you). But when it comes to a small team situation, warriors can still pull off better numbers against them with survivability and even come up on top, where thieves have to immediately run away and wait for an opportunity.

Wait…
You already said it’s a frigging glass thief, someone who can similarly get killed in 2 seconds by a guardian or otherwise.
I think the devs are going to nerf it no matter what, because 95% of the population doesn’t know how to get some toughness vit gear. I swear, you need to hold their hands and escort them to learn alphabets. Sigh. Nerf, after nerf, after nerf. I feel like I need to quit the game thanks to the whine.
If repair costs are cheaper, people probably won’t do it as much. And did I mention what’s happening in WvW worlds?
Some tier X server beating up the other servers because of 24/7 coverage with everything taken, and then the players who have to go up against them have to be prepared to fork out 50 silver coins in repair bills?
Yeah.
I took 12k damage from 100B, either combined with knockdown/quickness. It’s pretty crazy, because thieves have 10-13k HP, while that warrior has 18k. I can’t believe the amount of whine coming from other professions. If you want to nerf thief, nerf warrior first.
In case you didn’t know, thieves can only pull that “burst damage” every 45 seconds with every skill going into it, and after that they can’t do anything elset.

And like Arquin said, they did give warning already.
They gave a warning? No one in the WvW server at that time knew anything about an update. They all went ahead as a zerg, and not once did anyone say something about “Guys, are you sure about building so many golems? I heard there’s an update!?”
Nope. So when the reach of anet was to inform players outside of the game, it has the probable reach of 0.01% of the population in the game. And if this is a “scheduled update”, the way how it was done obviously did not reach the masses at all. The only other explanation is some extreme game breaking bug that will upset the economy or cause some other errors.
Just simply using the “service may be interrupted” isn’t good enough. It could have been handled so much better, and that is what ANet should have done in this case.
I agree with adding on to Lodestones availability. Think about it, how can someone get a legendary item if the component is so scarce?
I.E, the first run of the day, for each explorable = 1 lodestone drop. 3 drops/day for creating a “gift of XXX”, and in 90 days, one can get them.
Are devs immune to their own rules?
Approximately a few hours back, the devs saw fit to apply their shiny new update, without any warning or apology towards the players. This resulted in dungeon failures, lost of siege weapons, especially golems (where it takes 30-60 minutes of pve farming to even get 1 G), and general inconvenience for other people doing events. At least for Crystal desert players in WvW, there was a definitely loss of 6 golems + 1 omega golem.
However, it seems we can’t point fingers at ANet, nor complain about about it either. Everything, gets sent to the trash bin when people started posted angrily on the WvW section. Right here and right now, I’m asking very nicely.
Can we, the players get some basic respect? Warning us that you’re about to implement your builds or resets an hour ahead, will be a very good start. This isn’t the first time a sudden build took place, BUT, I do hope it will be the last.
Respectfully worded.
Looks better than some of the legendary weapons out there? (MK = mad king)
First time I saw bifrost… it was glowing slightly in the day and the person was leaving behind footprints (not clear on bright areas), attacking mobs with some white light and then it finally hit me. So that’s the staff legendary. I thought, after watching him for 30 seconds.
First time I saw dreamer, well it took me over 1 minute to realize there seemed to be some rainbow ammunition, and I realized there was a legendary weapon. Except I don’t recall that it left footprints of any kind, and if the person didn’t fire his weapon, I would have never saw it was legendary. Also the rainbow ammunition doesn’t leave a trail like ammunition, it feels like some 10 year old kid drew a rainbow star with rectangles behind them. That is the main reason why I thought it was subpar, but then again shortbow seems to be mostly shafted.
Incinerator? I know for a fact that the weapon has no model to speak off. It turns off if you aren’t doing anything and no one will ever notice your weapon. It does have footsteps, but the texture of the fire looks like something from 4-5 years ago. The weapon skin in combat itself is barely passable. It doesn’t distinguish itself from combat however, if you fight in a WvW zerg, you couldn’t even see any difference from fire spells.
Dawn and dusk, you know the drill. Instantly recognizable, because the entire thing is so visibly visible. The Colossus changes your armor to metallic, some changes in weapon animation, making them the top 3 legendary weapons in terms of graphic design.
Finally, when I saw the mad king’s shield… well I have no idea what to say. I was shocked that a weapon skin that came from a chest looking better than some of the legendary weapons. It took players hundreds of hours along with hundreds of gold, and in the end, it couldn’t compare with the badcat shield. Black smoke particles along with a fiery grin. When the person took it out with the mad memories backpack on him…
Well, anyways. Do you think the MK shield looks better than the legendary weapons?
Tell us how long the special event (Act 3) will last?
LOL. I guess some CD’s personnel got butthurt after SOR/SOS incident. And the previous match before SOR/SOS too.
I would like to listen to a music piece – To zanarkand,
on quaggan pipe organ.
ZLE sounds right. How do you macro it?
Can the devs add more stylistic hues to legendary weapons?

Sunrise = White
Twilight = Black
Juggernaut = Metallic
And…. the rest of the legendary weapons seem to go downhill from there. Can we add crimson (deep reddish, purplish) flames to incinerator that is bold and rich, extra rainbow hues that explode brilliantly to the dreamer? The ones I see in my server are really underwhelming.
All that fun pretty much ended when a perma stealth thief started attacking the invaders on CD borders. 4 hours siege for nothing, thanks SOR.
To the players who have played more than 8 hours daily, please remember to cut down on it.
All I can say to that line is, mind your own business, people can manage their own play time tyvm.
While I’m certain that many people can manage their time, I have seen my friends play many hours of other MMO games, till the point where their grades are affected. It is a caution and a plea, nothing more. You are still free to play as many hours as you wish.
Gratz to you, Ten
@LoneWolfie, just a short question: Why did you exclude me?
The pic i uploaded is below. Time played with the shown character is around 288h. Time played with all character is around 347h.
Therefore i should have met the conditions (200h<x<500h right?) to be on “the list”, but i can’t find my name on it :/
I must have missed out… sorry about that, there really were a lot of names…
It’s number 110. Wow that’s underwhelming.
Conditions are as followed.
1) Below 200 hours not eligible.
2) Above 500 hours not eligible.
For those who didn’t meet the conditions, I’m really sorry. I wanted to cut it off at 400 hours, but I thought it was better to include more people at the end. The reason why I choose to select a certain group is because a semi-hardcore group will probably find it next to impossible to farm up 200-400 g. For the massive hours put in by the hardcore players, you will almost certainly get the item in the future.
For the casual players, I’m sorry but the legendary item is very hard to obtain and I chose the semi-hardcore group who paid in a lot of hours but is still unable to obtain it.
For the rest of the people who did not win or got selected, I again apologize that I “chose” a certain demographic and hope you don’t blame me for that. If you still wish to pursue a legendary weapon, I suggest that you consider a 3 year plan where you save up 700 g to get all the necessary items.
PS: One final wish from me, I hope during Christmas time, you guys can hold a gift-sharing event to celebrate the holiday.
(edited by LoneWolfie.1852)
You do know that any other glass cannons can kill a thief extremely quick right? We build our class to have a 1 shot kill against light armored somewhat glass players (10k burst damage), but any thief fighting a full tank class in WvW will tell you it’s impossible to kill them.
On the other hand, if we fail to kill the other players, it’s over for us if they manage to stun for 2 seconds (some players did 8 k damage when I’m invisible, or just hit so hard with their 20k hp warriors and downed me in 3 seconds with no way to escape.). You might write about how we have stealth and all that, but the truth is you guys simply need to l2p. It’s WvW for crying out loud. Stop building your hero with a glass build and then whining how it gets killed easily.
I’ve seen so many players who managed to escape from my burst thief, the only ones who did not are those who have upscaled levels and poorer equipments.
I don’t get why people insist on keeping the 40 silver charges.
I was in WvW and there was only one person who noticed I was using a legendary weapon in a full hour. Can I ask if the devs are interested in improving them, especially the effects (or is this another breach of code of conduct)?
For the sheer amount of effort placed into them, I am kind of disappointed that only the GS/hammer are the highly noticeable ones.
To the players who entered, I have imposed 2 hidden conditions in regards to /age, and the giveaway is not completely RNG. In addition to that, I have added my own guild and CD’s synergy alliance as contestants.
This is the list that I have compiled. I will go to the randomizer website in another 10-12 hours.
PS: To the players who did not get in, my sincere apologies. To the players who have played more than 8 hours daily, please remember to cut down on it.
EDIT: Winner is ten.8421, selected number 110.
(edited by LoneWolfie.1852)
To everyone, I have made a list and shall not accept any more entries.
